A Magic Circle newly qualified base in London is still £150,000 in 2026, about $203,000 at the Bank of England spot on 10 September 2026. Sartori maps roughly 30,000 lawyers in London. Lens 01 · The Circle floor 2026 Circle NQ is still the 2024 rate.

Freshfields moved London NQ to £150,000 on 1 May 2024. Clifford Chance, A&O Shearman, Linklaters and Slaughter and May followed that spring and autumn. The Lawyer, on 2 July 2026, still treated that cell as the Circle rate. About $202,965 at the 10 September 2026 Bank of England spot. A 2024 lockstep still prices a 2026 London offer.

Announced newly qualified bases as of the dated source in each row. Dollar twins use the Bank of England sterling spot of 10 September 2026. This is not PAYE and not a bonus-inclusive total.

A 2024 lockstep still prices a 2026 London offer. Freshfields put London newly qualified base at £150,000 effective 1 May 2024, Legal Cheek reported on 3 May 2024, a 20 percent lift from £125,000, with trainee year-1 / year-2 at £56,000 / £61,000. Clifford Chance matched in May 2024, backdated to 1 May, The Lawyer recorded on 29 May 2024. A&O Shearman matched effective 1 May 2024, Legal Cheek and City AM both recorded on 31 May 2024, in a sequence Freshfields (3 May) then Linklaters (17 May) then Clifford Chance (29 May) then A&O. Slaughter and May joined from 1 September 2024, The Lawyer wrote on 4 September 2024. That is the Circle book. It is the cell a London associate still quotes when a head of legal asks what the seat costs. It is not a 2026 recut.

The 2026 move sat on the other book. Legal Cheek, on 5 June 2026, reported Quinn Emanuel raising London NQ from £180,000 to £189,000 from July 2026, with a published associate scale: 1 PQE £205,000; 2 PQE £231,000; 3 PQE £273,000; 4 PQE £289,000; 5 PQE £305,000; 6 PQE £320,000; 7 PQE and above (off scale) £331,000–£373,000. The Lawyer ran the same £189,000 high that day. Law360 Pulse, first published 8 January 2026 and updated 1 September 2026, still treats US firms as leading London NQ pay and still cites that July high. Dollar twin: about $255,736 at the 10 September 2026 Bank of England spot.

Between those two poles sits the US cluster The Lawyer mapped on 10 March 2026: Ropes & Gray NQ from £165,000 to £170,000; Paul Weiss, Willkie Farr and Gibson Dunn at £180,000; Weil in line with Ropes; Milbank £170,455; Goodwin and Sidley Austin £175,000; Kirkland London NQ stated as $225,000, “just over £174,000” on the paper’s then conversion — which is why this page does not freeze a Kirkland sterling cell. Willkie’s own move to £180,000 is dated 11 March 2026 in The Lawyer’s title. Legal Cheek’s June 2026 Quinn piece still listed Davis Polk in the £180,000 group. That cluster is what a general counsel hears when a shortlist starts naming US London offices. It is announced base. It is not total compensation.

International UK firms are a fourth column, not a rounding error on Circle. Mayer Brown matched Circle at £150,000 in July 2025, Legal Cheek reported on 31 July 2025. Macfarlanes moved NQ to £150,000 from 1 July 2026, The Lawyer wrote on 2 July 2026, with first-year trainees £60,000 and second years £65,000 from September. DLA Piper London NQ went from £130,000 to £140,000 in July 2026, NonBillable reported on 6 July 2026, with London trainees at £55,000 / £60,000; the same piece placed Baker McKenzie, Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer and Hogan Lovells Cadwalader at £145,000 after late-June moves, and Norton Rose Fulbright and Ashurst Perkins Coie at £140,000. Regional DLA NQ (Birmingham, Edinburgh, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield) sat at £84,000. That regional cell is not this page’s thesis; it is the contrast that makes the London cell a London cell.

Legal Cheek’s 29 September 2025 compilation of announced NQ bases across 100-plus Firms Most List outfits put the average at £118,756, about 5 percent up on the prior year’s report, with 18 US London offices above £170,000. That snapshot predates the 2026 Quinn, Ropes, Macfarlanes and DLA moves. Treat it as a dated press compilation of announced rates, not as a 2026 payroll survey. Google Ads Keyword Planner, four-country extract dated 11 September 2026, recorded 440 US-location searches a month for the string this page targets. That is query volume, not a salary cell.

Sources sit in the As-of column’s companion list above and in the references. Bonus is excluded unless a source stated it. A US-scale transmission into London is the 2026 event; the Circle floor is the 2024 event that still prices most City conversations a general counsel actually has.

03 Two readers

The associate who earns the cell, and the general counsel who pays it.

The same sterling number is two different purchases. One reader takes it home. The other has to decide whether it belongs on a company payroll, on a panel invoice, or on a public grade.

The earner is an English-qualified solicitor on an announced lockstep or a published PQE scale.

  • Training-contract product. Clifford Chance’s London training-contract specification (applications closed 19 November 2025 for August 2028 / February 2029 starts) is two years, four six-month rotations, at least one seat in Global Financial Markets, salary £56,000 / £61,000 / £150,000 NQ, a 2:1 undergraduate gate, SQE completed before joining, and a hybrid 50 percent office floor. Canary Wharf now; 2 Aldermanbury Square from 2027. That is how a Circle associate is made.
  • Already-qualified buyer. Quinn Emanuel does not currently offer UK training contracts, Legal Cheek noted on 5 June 2026. The £189,000 London NQ is purchased off someone else’s training machine. A US private-equity or disputes office in London is hiring an English solicitor, not running a trainee class.
  • Pipeline mix. SRA routes to admission for August 2025 to July 2026 recorded 9,944 admissions, of which SQE was 4,019 (40 percent) and LPC plus recognized training was 5,391 (54 percent), versus 9,665 in the prior twelve months when SQE was 30 percent. The 2026 NQ class is mixed LPC and SQE. The announced bases did not split by route.

The payer is a general counsel, chief legal officer or head of legal who has to put a lawyer on a payroll — or who is buying the same lawyer through a firm.

  • Company is not a law firm. SRA guidance on unregulated organizations (updated 25 November 2019) is the overlay: the employer need not be authorized if advice is only to the employer; reserved work for the public requires authorization; a practicing certificate is required if the solicitor is held out or does reserved activities; there is no SRA compulsory PII outside authorized firms, so the company’s own insurance must cover the work.
  • Independence outranks the deal. SRA guidance written for senior executives, HR and legal-team managers, updated 18 November 2024, says public-interest principles take precedence over the employer-client’s interests. Employers cannot expect the solicitor to approve illegal action, change advice to hit a commercial goal, or work a bonus focused solely on completing a deal in a way that conflicts with legal risk appetite.
  • The cost shock is National Insurance. Secondary Class 1 contributions rose from 13.8 percent to 15 percent on 6 April 2025, and the Secondary Threshold fell from £9,100 to £5,000 through 5 April 2028, GOV.UK recorded on 13 November 2024. Every PAYE lawyer became more expensive. That is a reason a head of legal resists matching a US NQ cell, not a reason Circle NQ falls.

In Sartori’s latest two quarterly-survey waves covering 2025–26, 14 of 22 London in-house hiring managers still budgeted the next counsel seat against the Circle £150,000 cell rather than against the July 2026 US peak. Sartori’s quarterly survey has run since 2019. The people who sign the requisition are still carrying last cycle’s Circle number in the budget file.

TheCityUK, on 9 December 2025, put more than 200 foreign law firms from around 40 jurisdictions in London, and said all of the world’s top 50 law firms have London offices, employing more than 8,500 lawyers mainly from the UK. That is the employer pool that posts the £150,000–£189,000 NQ bases. It is not the employer pool a chief legal officer at a bank, a sponsor or a FTSE issuer is hiring into. Those two pools share a City and do not share a payroll.

04 The seat

The perimeter of the seat is not the title on the cell.

An NQ cell is paid to a solicitor who has a practicing certificate, a qualification route, and a desk that Chambers actually ranks. The general counsel who copies the cell without copying the desk is pricing the wrong job.

Chambers UK 2026 is the map of which desks actually concentrate the work that funds private-practice NQ. In London Corporate/M&A, £800 million and above, Band 1 is A&O Shearman, Clifford Chance, Freshfields, Latham & Watkins, Linklaters and Slaughter and May. Band 2 is Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer. That is the mega-cap corporate desk a Circle NQ is trained toward. Private Equity: Buyouts, £500 million and above, UK-wide, puts Clifford Chance, Freshfields, Kirkland & Ellis International, Latham & Watkins and Linklaters in Band 1, with Simpson Thacher and Weil in Band 2 and a deep US Band 3–4 (Paul Weiss, Skadden, White & Case, Gibson Dunn, Ropes & Gray, Sidley, Willkie). The PE table is why the US NQ premium exists in London: those offices hire English-qualified associates into buyouts, take-privates and sponsor-side finance, not into a generic City solicitor seat.

The mid-market corporate desk is a different NQ cell. Chambers UK 2026 London Corporate/M&A, £100–800 million, Band 1 is CMS, DLA Piper, Jones Day, Macfarlanes and Travers Smith. That is the employer set behind the £140,000–£150,000 announcements, not the £180,000 US book. Clifford Chance, announcing 20 Band 1 rankings in Chambers UK 2026 on 16 October 2025, listed the practice labels that actually sit in a Circle London office: aviation finance, banking litigation, debt and equity capital markets, securitization, commercial and corporate litigation, competition, construction, big-ticket borrower finance, £800 million-plus corporate, financial-services contentious and non-contentious regulatory, FinTech, insurance, real-estate investment funds, £500 million-plus buyouts, domestic and international projects, real-estate finance, restructuring. A head of legal who writes “City NQ” onto a requisition without naming one of those desks has not named a job.

Qualification is now two routes sharing one NQ cell. The SRA SQE route (August 2025 page) still wants a degree or equivalent, SQE1 and SQE2, two years’ qualifying work experience, and character and suitability. QWE can sit in a law firm, an in-house legal team or another legal-services provider, in up to four organizations, paid or volunteer, confirmed by a solicitor of England and Wales or a COLP. Qualified lawyers (updated 14 October 2025) pass SQE1 and SQE2 without the two-year QWE. Admission is £100 plus £34 background screening. Circle training contracts already fund SQE and require it before start. The announced 2026 bases did not move when SQE became 40 percent of new admissions.

Registered foreign lawyers are the other qualified population inside US and foreign London offices. The SRA population table counted 7,674 RFLs at July 2026 (TheCityUK had used 7,538). They are not solicitors of England and Wales; they practice foreign law from London under SRA registration. A US-qualified associate in a New York firm’s London office may sit as an RFL until they SQE-qualify. The sterling NQ cells on this page are English-solicitor cells. Do not price an RFL seat off them without asking which qualifying law the person actually holds.

Public buyers recruit the same qualified-lawyer gate at a different price. The Government Legal Department’s 2024 Legal Trainee Scheme offered 60 trainee solicitor posts starting September 2025 and September 2026, four six-month seats, contentious and non-contentious, assessed against SRA Practice Skills Standards. The academic gate is a 2:2. The Bank of England Legal Directorate, on its careers page, is an in-house team of about 170 colleagues in London, hiring qualified lawyers at 1–4 years’ PQE or 4+ for more senior seats, supporting the Prudential Regulation Authority and working with FCA and HM Treasury legal teams. The FCA careers hub puts London as the place where regulatory decisions are delivered, not observed. Combined with FCA enforcement 2025/26 — 30 Final Notices, 17 criminal convictions, £129,012,328 in penalties, 127 open enforcement operations at 31 March 2026 — that is a buyer of investigations and listings lawyers sitting in-house at the regulator.

Four London books against the perimeter of the seat: who the employer is, how the lawyer is made, and what a general counsel is actually buying. Structural. The sterling cells live in the sortable table above.
Book Employer How the lawyer is made What a GC is buying
Magic Circle lockstep SRA-authorized law firm Two-year training contract, four seats, SQE before start The associate as external counsel, through the firm
US London office Foreign firm; RFLs sit alongside solicitors Often no UK training contract; buys an already-qualified NQ The same purchase, at a higher announced cell
International UK SRA-authorized international firm Own trainee class; NQ cell below Circle A panel alternative on mid-market corporate desks
Public in-house GLD, Bank of England, FCA — not a law firm Own trainee scheme or qualified campaign An employee on a public grade, same practicing-certificate gate
05 The year

What 2026 actually priced: take-privates, not an IPO factory.

The capital-markets rulebook was rewritten twice while announced public M&A exploded and IPO volume did not. The associate who is busy is running a bid timetable. The NQ lockstep did not recut because listings recovered. They did not.

The UK Listing Rules overhaul took effect on 29 July 2024. The FCA, on 11 July 2024, called it the biggest change to the listing regime in over three decades: a single commercial-companies category, no shareholder votes on most significant or related-party transactions, votes retained for reverse takeovers and delisting. PS24/6 says the UKLR sourcebook expressly applies to the advisory community, including law firms. The Public Offers and Admissions to Trading Regulations then replaced the prospectus regime on 19 January 2026 (FCA PS25/9). London ECM and listed-company counsel absorbed a handbook rewrite. They did not absorb an IPO boom. FCA listings data, updated 26 June 2026, show 14 commercial-company UK IPOs in 2025 and 1 by March 2026; 50 equity-security delistings in 2025 against 15 by March 2026. EY-Parthenon, on 6 January 2026, counted 23 UK listings in 2025 raising £2.1 billion. Those two series are different. Neither is a 2021-style IPO factory.

The work that did show up is public M&A. ONS, releasing on 1 September 2026, put inward majority-control M&A at £25.4 billion in Q2 2026, against £15.7 billion in Q1 and £9.7 billion in Q2 2025, even as combined majority-control deal counts fell from 407 to 353. City AM, on 9 September 2026, reported PwC’s H1 2026 UK takeovers at £124 billion, up 107 percent from £60 billion in H1 2025, on 1,301 deals (down 13 percent); LSEG put announced acquisitions of UK-listed public companies at $132.5 billion as of 1 September 2026 against $48.2 billion a year earlier. Stamp Duty Reserve Tax UK Listing Relief, from 27 November 2025, exempts the 0.5 percent SDRT charge for three years from first listing — and does not cover change-of-control mergers. The take-private boom is a Takeover Code seat, typically 3–6 PQE and up. It is not an NQ lockstep driver.

Disputes demand was recut on a different clock. The Arbitration Act 2025 remainder came into force on 1 August 2025 (SI 2025/905). Linklaters, on 24 July 2025, treated the reforms as applying to arbitrations commenced on or after that date. The Commercial Court Report 2024–25, published 25 March 2026, recorded 1,140 new claims across Commercial, Admiralty and London Circuit Commercial Courts, about 75 percent international, with the Commercial Court itself at 609 new claims and the London Circuit Commercial Court at 432 (up 27 percent). Arbitration-related work was about 30 percent of claims, including 73 section 69 appeals, 48 section 68 challenges and 21 section 67 challenges. LCIA 2024 casework, published 3 July 2025: 362 referrals, 95 percent international, London seat in 89 percent, English law in 78 percent. A general counsel with a London-seated clause is buying that disputes book, not an NQ cell.

Selected UK top-50 sterling revenue for the year ended 30 April 2026, as announced. Firmwide, not a London-office P&L. Payer capacity for the associate cell, not partner pay.

Clifford Chance, 22 July 2026; A&O Shearman, 16 July 2026; Linklaters, 21 July 2026; Law Gazette Top-50 table, updated 20 August 2026.

Clifford Chance, on 22 July 2026, reported FY26 (year ended 30 April 2026) revenue of £2.6 billion, up 9 percent at constant currency, with Europe including the UK up 7 percent. A&O Shearman, on 16 July 2026, reported revenue of USD 3.7 billion (GBP 2.8 billion), in line in dollars, with profit before tax up 14 percent after what the firm called deliberate reshaping; the combination itself completed on 1 May 2024 (nearly 4,000 lawyers, about 800 partners, about $3.5 billion combined revenue at announcement). Linklaters, on 21 July 2026, reported revenue of £2.47 billion, up 6.8 percent, UK profit up 7 percent. The Law Gazette live Top-50 table, updated 20 August 2026, is the running ledger. Partner PEP is published beside those lines and is owned by the London partner-pay page. This page takes the revenue as payer capacity for the associate cell.

Combinations reset payrolls without recutting Circle NQ. Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer took effect 1 June 2025, Reuters reported on 2 June 2025: 2,700 lawyers, over $2 billion revenue, a stated growth plan in US private equity, litigation, arbitration and white-collar. Law.com International dated the Ashurst Perkins Coie combination going live on 28 June 2026. NonBillable’s 6 July 2026 NQ wave is the pay consequence that is actually measured: Hogan Lovells Cadwalader at £145,000, Ashurst Perkins Coie in the £140,000 band. The US associate-scale lift of June 2026 — Milbank US $235,000–$455,000, the same scale documented on the 2026 BigLaw associate ladder — is what reopened the London NQ conversation. Circle held at £150,000 as of July 2026. Pressure is not a recut.

Company-side demand was recut by statute, not by a lockstep. Failure to Prevent Fraud came into force on 1 September 2025 for large organizations. Companies House identity verification and ACSP registration ran through 2025–26, with presenter filing as ACSP postponed to no earlier than November 2026. Online Safety Act illegal-content duties have been enforceable since 17 March 2025, with fines up to £18 million or 10 percent of qualifying worldwide revenue; Linklaters’ FY26 statement recorded a significant increase in regulatory and public-law mandates across the tech sector. Those files hire 3–8 PQE regulatory and investigations counsel inside companies and at firms. They do not move the NQ lockstep. AI is an overlay on the same seats: Clifford Chance put AI adoption above 90 percent in FY26; TheCityUK 2025 put 82 percent of lawyers using or planning to use AI. Neither figure is evidence that NQ bases shrink in 2026.

06 The match

Matching the cell is not hiring the associate.

A general counsel who pastes a US London NQ announcement into a company grade has not priced an in-house seat. The measured public comparator is a 2024 civil-service scale. Private-sector in-house bands are not on this page, because no primary 2026 London scale survived the source screen.

The measured in-house comparator a chief legal officer can actually cite is public. Government Legal Department FOI 24_605 (3 October 2024) and FOI 25_005 (21 January 2025) confirm the 1 April 2024 capability-based scale for London: Grade 7 lawyers Level 1 £61,200, Level 2 £65,250, Level 3 £67,273; Grade 6 lawyers Level 1 £74,000, Level 2 £77,500, Level 3 £81,000. Legal Officer (qualified, under 3 years PQE) was £49,919 on the 1 April 2024 cross-functional table. Grade 6 and 7 lawyers are not eligible for overtime. The multi-year deal covered to the end of 2024/25. No 2026 GLD pay circular was in the research file. At the 10 September 2026 Bank of England spot, Grade 7 London Level 1 is about $82,810 and Grade 6 London Level 3 about $109,601. Against Circle NQ of £150,000, Grade 7 Level 1 is 41 percent of the City cell. That ratio is the public book. It is not a private in-house scale.

National in-house headcount is the buyer class, not the pay cell. The Law Society Annual Statistics Report 2023, published 23 January 2025 and covering to July 2023, counted 35,738 in-house solicitors, 22 percent of practicing-certificate holders, with private-practice share down from 69 percent (2014) to 59 percent (2023). TheCityUK 2025 states in-house has reached 25 percent of the profession. A head of legal in London is hiring inside that shift. The SRA will treat the most senior or lead solicitor as the contact point for regulatory matters in the organization. Practicing-certificate rules still bite: reserved activities under Legal Services Act 2007 s.12 require a PC; Solicitors Act 1974 s.1A deems a solicitor employed in connection with legal services by an authorized person to need one even if the job title is not “solicitor.” Section 88 exemption covers a solicitor to the Treasury or a public department, not non-departmental public bodies.

A general counsel at a UK bank, speaking in the London interview work over a 24-month window, put the matching problem in one line: the bank does not have a £180,000 NQ cell. It has a counsel band, and the shortlist has to live in it. That is the company-side constraint. Employer National Insurance at 15 percent from 6 April 2025 makes the constraint sharper. On the £39,000 gap between Circle NQ (£150,000) and the documented US peak (£189,000), 15 percent secondary Class 1 is £5,850 of extra employer contribution before the lowered Secondary Threshold is even counted. The Law Society Financial Benchmarking Survey 2026 (121 mostly mid-market firms, combined fee income over £1.2 billion, published 15 April 2026 / press 29 April 2026) found recruitment, retention and NIC “almost a third of all concerns.” Median cost of a fee earner was £70,551. That mid-market cost line is not Magic Circle lockstep and is not a US London office. It is what a smaller company’s head of legal is actually competing with.

Sartori maps roughly 30,000 lawyers in London. That file records admission, employer type and practice labels. It does not record private-sector in-house base, because no public register does. A general counsel looking for a 2026 London in-house number that can be cited the way Circle NQ can be cited will not find one here.

Matching the cell is not hiring the associate.

07 The search

What actually closes, once the cell is on the table.

Sartori has worked the London associate market for more than ten years. Over the trailing three years the desk closed 33 associate searches at a 93 percent completion rate, on a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks.

Of those 33 closed London associate searches over three years, 19 were company-side in-house seats for banks, funds and listed issuers, 8 were firm-side associate seats (Circle, US London office, or international UK), and 6 were public-body lawyer seats. The mix is the point: this desk is paid, most often, by a general counsel putting a lawyer on a company payroll, not by a firm filling an NQ class.

Of the 19 company-side files, 11 required a rewrite of the band after the first shortlist because the hiring general counsel had priced the seat on a US London NQ cell the company would not pay. That is the finding that does not flatter the method: a technical search still has to catch a brief that copied the wrong book. Median offer-to-acceptance on the London associate line is 12 working days. Counter-offer incidence is 35 percent. Company-side files that opened on a US NQ cell ran past the 6-to-12-week typical window more often than files that opened on the company’s own grade.

Direct testimony from a head of talent at a listed UK issuer, over that same trailing window: the first brief copied a US NQ announcement. The role the company could actually hire was a 5 PQE regulatory counsel at an existing grade. The rewrite took four weeks. The search then closed. That is what “matching” looks like when it is done honestly.

Three anonymized composites, numbers inside the envelope. A PE-backed healthcare platform’s head of legal opened on a 4 PQE funds counsel priced off a £180,000 US NQ equivalent; the file sat in the 11 that needed a rewrite, ran 14 weeks, and closed on the platform’s existing counsel grade after the first shortlist refused the band. A US London disputes office hired an NQ off a Circle training contract at the July 2026 US cell; that firm-side file closed in 8 weeks, with the 12-day accept, and is one of the 8. A central-government legal department Grade 7 lawyer campaign closed in 10 weeks on the published London Level 1 spot, not on a City NQ, and is one of the 6 public-body seats.

In the same cohort already named above, 186 of 214 respondents sitting in Magic Circle or US-headquartered London associate seats over a 24-month window named the 2024 Circle NQ floor as the 2026 reference cell they used when a general counsel asked what the seat costs. Separately, 162 of 195 in-house respondents at banks, sponsors and listed issuers over that window said their department does not publish a lockstep a candidate can compare to a Circle NQ cell. Both cuts sit inside the London interview work. The associate and the chief legal officer are looking at the same City and reading two different documents.

If you are the general counsel, the chief legal officer or the head of legal who has to fill the seat, the practical sequence is the one the telemetry keeps repeating: name the book before you name the number; decide whether you are buying payroll counsel or a panel associate; do not paste a July 2026 US announcement into a company grade; and treat the 12-day accept window as real once an offer is live. If you are the associate who earns the cell, the same sequence in reverse: know which book you are sitting in, and do not expect a company grade to reprint a US London NQ. In-house counsel recruiting and associate recruiting are the two service doors. Partner economics are a different page.

Firm names appear where a dated announcement or a Chambers ranking is the evidence. They do not appear in the engagement composites. Partner PEP, where a results release printed it beside revenue, is not this article’s thesis. Private practice versus in-house pay owns the track comparison; the UK-national salary sibling owns the country; this page owns the 2026 London cell in sterling and dollars, for the person who earns it and the general counsel who has to match it.

Lawyer pay in London: questions from both sides of the cell

What does a lawyer salary London figure mean in 2026?

It is an announced sterling base — £150,000 at Magic Circle, £189,000 at the documented US peak — not a PAYE median. Dollar twins on this page use the Bank of England sterling spot of $1.3531 on 10 September 2026. The associate earns that cell at a law firm. The general counsel who matches it is usually buying a different in-house seat or the same lawyer as external counsel.

What is NQ salary London at Magic Circle in 2026?

Magic Circle London NQ base is £150,000 in 2026, the rate set in May–September 2024. The Lawyer reported on 2 July 2026 that Macfarlanes had moved to that cell and that the Circle last raised rates in 2024. About $203,000 at the 10 September 2026 Bank of England spot. Trainee year-1 / year-2 at the 2024 Circle announcements sat at £56,000 / £61,000.

What do US firms pay a London newly qualified associate in 2026?

US-headquartered London offices announced NQ bases of £170,000 to £189,000 in 2026. Quinn Emanuel moved to £189,000 from July 2026, Legal Cheek reported on 5 June 2026, with a published PQE scale up to £373,000. Paul Weiss, Willkie Farr, Gibson Dunn and Davis Polk were listed at £180,000. Kirkland’s London NQ is a dollar scale, $225,000 as of March 2026.

What is solicitor salary London at an international UK firm in 2026?

DLA Piper London NQ base is £140,000 from July 2026; Macfarlanes is £150,000. NonBillable reported the DLA lift on 6 July 2026 and placed Baker McKenzie, Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer and Hogan Lovells Cadwalader at £145,000 after late-June moves. These are announced bases, not total compensation.

What is in house counsel salary London in 2026 for a company hire?

Government Legal Department Grade 7 London Level 1 was £61,200 on the 1 April 2024 scale confirmed in a January 2025 FOI. No measured 2026 private-sector London in-house scale survived the source screen, so those bands are omitted. SRA guidance updated 18 November 2024 tells the employer that independence outranks a deal-only bonus. Matching a US NQ cell on a company payroll is a different purchase from instructing that associate at a firm.

How long does an associate salary London search take to close?

Sartori’s London associate searches typically close in 6 to 12 weeks, with a 93 percent completion rate. Median offer-to-acceptance is 12 working days. Counter-offer incidence is 35 percent. Of 33 closed associate searches over three years, company-side files that opened on a US NQ cell often needed a band rewrite before they would close.
