Law firm CMO salary in 2026
A chief marketing officer and a legal marketing director are paid for different work. The official U.S. manager wage is the wrong anchor for either letter.

Each figure in the table carries the month it was measured. None of these rows is a law firm chief.
| Occupation | What was measured | Figure, with year | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marketing managers | Median annual wage, United States | $166,790 (May 2025) | BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook |
| Marketing managers, professional, scientific, and technical services | Median annual wage, that industry | $170,050 (May 2025) | BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook |
| Marketing managers, lowest tenth | Annual wage threshold | Under $90,260 (May 2025) | BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook |
| Marketing managers, highest tenth | Annual wage threshold | Above $293,610 (May 2025) | BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook |
| Advertising and promotions managers | Median annual wage, United States | $133,660 (May 2025) | BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook |
| Public relations managers | Mean annual wage; 74,850 jobs | $164,760 (May 2025) | BLS OEWS Table 1 |
| Public relations managers | Median hourly wage | $70.63 (May 2025) | BLS OEWS Table 1 |
| All occupations | Median annual wage, United States | $50,980 (May 2025) | BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook |
Marketing managers held about 421,600 jobs in 2025. Professional, scientific, and technical services accounted for 23 percent of them. Law firms sit inside that industry group, so the $170,050 median (May 2025) is the closest official industry cell. It is still a manager wage. It mixes law firms with consulting, architecture, engineering, and advertising practices, and it mixes chiefs with people who run a single channel.
The highest tenth of marketing managers earned more than $293,610 in May 2025. That threshold is the first official number that reaches the lower end of a law-firm chief conversation, and it still describes the manager occupation, not a person who owns the firm’s pitch calendar. Public relations managers, a cell often borrowed for a communications chief, had a mean annual wage of $164,760 in May 2025 across 74,850 jobs, and a median hourly wage of $70.63. Advertising and promotions managers sat at a $133,660 median. The all-occupation median was $50,980.
Legal marketing director salary sits under the chief band
Ranges from closed searches on this desk. The year sits inside the base cell. Director and London rows are separate books.

| Am Law 100 chief marketing officer, United States | 7 | January 2023–June 2026 | $485,000 (2023–2026) | 30% |
| Am Law 101–200 chief marketing officer, United States | 5 | January 2023–June 2026 | $325,000 (2023–2026) | 25% |

| Legal marketing director, U.S. firms of 100–700 lawyers | 9 | January 2022–June 2026 | $228,000 (2022–2026) | 18% |
| Chief marketing or marketing director, London, firms of at least 400 lawyers | 4 | January 2022–June 2026 | £168,000 (2022–2026) | 20% |
15 U.S. chief mandates opened from January 2023 through June 2026. 12 closed. 3 were withdrawn when the partnership would not fund a chief seat. 7 of the 12 closed files were Am Law 100 firms. 5 were Am Law 101–200. The median accepted base across the 12 was $400,000. That median is $233,210 above the May 2025 marketing-manager median of $166,790, and $172,000 above the director median of $228,000. The Am Law 100 median of $485,000 sits $160,000 above the Am Law 101–200 median of $325,000.
A 30 percent target bonus on the Am Law 100 median base of $485,000 is $145,500. Target cash on that row is $630,500 before benefits, retirement, and any long-term cash plan. The Am Law 101–200 row carries a 25 percent median target bonus on a $325,000 median base. Do not paste the 30 percent chief bonus onto the director row. The 9 director files, at firms of 100 to 700 lawyers and closed from January 2022 through June 2026, carried an 18 percent median target bonus on a $228,000 median base.
The 4 London files are a separate book: firms with at least 400 lawyers, January 2022 through June 2026, median accepted base £168,000, median target bonus 20 percent of base. They are not inside the 12, and they are not converted into dollars on this page. A sterling seat and a dollar seat are different letters.
Speed on the 12 closed U.S. chief files: a median of 27 days to shortlist, and a median of 13 weeks from brief to accepted offer. Those clocks belong to this seat. They are not the clock on a general counsel search.
We had drafted the letter off a marketing-manager survey. The shortlist would not move at that number. The person we hired had already run pitches for a lateral group.
The person in the seat and the firm writing the letter
Same ranges. The questions differ. Scope first, then cash.
Scope moves before cash. The diagram has no salaries in it.
Narrower remitFirmwide remit
- Channel manager One program: content, events, or directories. Reports to a director.
- Legal marketing director A practice group or a region. Owns the calendar for that book. Does not set the firm budget.
- Chief marketing officer Firmwide pitches, the budget, and the partner-campaign calendar. Reports to the managing partner or the chief operating officer.
Match the letter to the work, then to the band.
Ask which practices you will be measured on, whether you hold the pitch budget, and who signs a directory contract. A director title with a firmwide pitch calendar is the chief’s job. On this desk that work cleared at a $400,000 median base across the 12 U.S. chief files, not at the $228,000 director median. If the letter is an Am Law 100 chief seat, the comparison row is $485,000 base and a 30 percent target bonus, for target cash of $630,500 before benefits.
Read the bonus formula in dollars, not only as a percent. Confirm whether the target is paid on firm revenue, on a personal book of pitches, or on a discretionary pool. A target the compensation committee has not paid is not the target in the letter. Ask what was actually paid before you compare the letter with the band.
The reporting line is part of the wage. A chief who reports to a managing partner or a chief operating officer is in the chief band. A “chief” who reports to a director, with no budget signature, is in the director band regardless of the title on the letter. The Chicago file below kept the sitting director and changed the reporting line. The new chief was not a second director.
Write the band that matches the calendar you are actually buying.
If the seat owns firmwide pitches, price the chief row: $485,000 median base at Am Law 100, $325,000 at Am Law 101–200, $400,000 across the 12. If the seat owns one practice group inside a firm of 100 to 700 lawyers, price the director row at $228,000 and an 18 percent target bonus. The London book, for firms of at least 400 lawyers, cleared at a £168,000 median base.
The retained fee is 25 to 30 percent of total first-year compensation. Thirty percent of that fee is paid at engagement. Apply the percent to the package you will actually pay, including target bonus if it is part of total first-year compensation, not to base alone and not to the May 2025 manager median of $166,790. A chief search is a different instruction from a director search. The brief should say which row you mean before anyone is called.
3 of the 15 U.S. chief mandates were withdrawn because the partnership would not fund the chief seat. Those files did not fail on candidate supply. They failed on the budget the partnership was willing to approve after the shortlist existed. Settle the band in the engagement letter. The search for this seat is run from the chief marketing officer search practice. A director brief that is honestly a director brief sits with business-development director search.
The 2025 spending year the salary sits inside

- Thomson Reuters and Georgetown Law, 7 January 2026
Thomson Reuters and the Center on Ethics and the Legal Profession at Georgetown Law, in the press release of 7 January 2026 for the 2026 Report on the State of the US Legal Market, reported that profits per lawyer at Am Law 100 firms had risen 53.7 percent since 2019. Through 2025, demand at the firms in the report grew 2.5 percent, and 4.4 percent in July. Technology spending rose 9.7 percent. Direct spending on lawyer compensation rose 8.2 percent, described as broad-based across levels rather than a few lateral guarantees. The same release, citing the 2025 Future of Professionals report, said firms with a formal AI strategy were 3.9 times as likely to see critical benefits as firms without significant AI plans.
That is the year a partnership is hiring the person who has to explain the spend. A chief marketing officer in this market is paid to connect a pitch, a technology budget, and a partner campaign. The wage for that job is the chief band above. It is not a share of the 53.7 percent profit figure, and it is not the 8.2 percent compensation increase applied to last year’s director salary. Partner cash, which is a different instrument entirely, is on the 2026 law firm partner salary page.
An Am Law 100 firm in Chicago hired its first chief
Named by role and city. No client name. The accepted base is one file inside the Am Law 100 set.
What the letter has to name before any dollar figure. No salaries in this diagram.
- Name the seat Chief, or director. The title has to match the calendar the firm is buying.
- Name the signature Who signs the pitch budget, and who the seat reports to.
- Name the bonus The formula in dollars, and whether that formula has been paid.
- Name the incumbent Whether the sitting director stays, and on which reporting line.
An Am Law 100 firm in Chicago had never had a chief marketing officer. Marketing sat with a director who ran directories, events, and the pitches one litigation group asked for. The partnership drafted the first letter from a marketing-manager survey. The number on that draft was in the neighborhood of the May 2025 median of $166,790. The shortlist would not move.
The search was rebriefed as a chief seat: firmwide pitches, a budget signature, and a reporting line to the managing partner. The shortlist was in on day 26. The accepted offer landed in week 14. Accepted base was $360,000, with a target bonus of 25 percent of base. Target cash on that letter was $450,000 before benefits. The base sits below the $485,000 median of the 7 Am Law 100 files. It was a first chief at a firm that already had a director, not a replacement of a sitting chief.
The sitting director stayed and reported to the new chief. That was a condition of the offer, written down, so the firm did not pay two chiefs and did not demote the director into a coordinator title. The managing partner described the first letter this way: We had drafted the letter off a marketing-manager survey. The shortlist would not move at that number. The person we hired had already run pitches for a lateral group.
The same 12 files show the other failure. 5 of the 12 drew a counter-offer within 11 days of the firm’s written offer. 3 of those 5 were still unresolved at week 18. They closed later, inside the window, after the bonus formula was rewritten in dollars. The median of 13 weeks to an accepted offer includes those slower files. A partnership that treats week 13 as a failure is reading the median as a deadline.
The 3 withdrawn mandates are the unflattering count. Candidate supply was not the constraint. The partnership had approved a search and had not approved a chief wage. On a London file in the separate book of 4, the chief operating officer described the same mismatch of title and work.
The title said director and the work was the chief’s. We repriced the seat before the second interview. The hire started with a budget, not a style guide.
