UK partner pay 2026: Magic Circle versus US PEP
For the year ended 30 April 2026, Magic Circle equity PEP prints £2.2m-£2.48m. US-headquartered firms that staff London printed calendar-2025 PEP of $4.4m to $11.121m. This page is for the partner who earns that unit and the firm leadership or general counsel who pays it, in sterling and in dollars, by firm tier, across the UK.
The 2026 number is a contrast, not a PAYE line.
The 2026 law firm partner salary UK question is a dated contrast between Magic Circle and US-firm PEP and the rest of the UK partner market, in local currency and USD. Sartori maps about 30,000 lawyers in London. Coverage is not the constraint. Reading the unit is. A partner asking what they earn, and a general counsel asking what the company actually pays, are not looking at the same ledger.
A&O Shearman printed PEP of £2.2m (USD $2.9m) for the year ended 30 April 2026; Clifford Chance printed £2.3m; Linklaters printed £2.48m. Those are global profit-share units on a 30 April year-end, announced in July 2026. A band. A profit share. Not PAYE.
Six readings of one 2026 contrast. The UK-wide table, in sterling and dollars, is the next section. FY26 result letters, the Gazette Top-50 table, and the Law Society survey.
- £2.48m
- Linklaters profit per equity partner for the year ended 30 April 2026 - the highest Magic Circle PEP print in the FY26 set.
- Linklaters, record FY26 results, 21 July 2026
- $11.121m
- Kirkland & Ellis PEP on the 2026 Am Law 100 (calendar 2025) - the global unit a London Kirkland equity partner sits on.
- Above the Law reprint of the 2026 Am Law 100, 15 April 2026
- £248,985
- Median net profit per equity partner at 145 smaller and mid-sized England and Wales firms, 2024 year-ends.
- Law Society / Hazlewoods Financial Benchmarking Survey 2025, published 5 March 2025
Those three prints are not a scale. They are the 2026 contrast — Magic Circle, US global pool, rest of England and Wales — that the table below fills in by reporter. Every sterling-to-dollar product on this page uses the Bank of England spot of 1.3582 on 30 April 2026, except A&O Shearman’s own USD PEP of $2.9m.
The 2026 law firm partner salary UK table, in sterling and dollars
UK reporters print PEP on a 30 April year-end. US-headquartered firms that staff London print Am Law PEP on a calendar year. The table puts both on one page, with the Bank of England 30 April 2026 spot of 1.3582 in every converted cell.
Open on the dated prints. Linklaters, on 21 July 2026, reported profit per equity partner of £2.48m for the year ended 30 April 2026, on revenue of £2.47bn and pre-tax profit of £1.2bn. Legal Business, 22 July 2026, put Clifford Chance PEP at £2.3m, up 9 percent from £2.11m, on revenue of £2.6bn. A&O Shearman, on 16 July 2026, printed PEP of USD $2.9m and GBP £2.2m for the same year-end — the cleanest dual-currency Magic Circle disclosure in the set. Those three prints are the 2026 Magic Circle band.
They are not the top of the UK table. Legal Cheek, 30 July 2026, put Macfarlanes PEP at £3.1m for 2025-26, on revenue of £389.5m. That independent City unit sits above every Magic Circle reporter. It is also not the top of the converted table: at the Bank of England spot of 1.3582 on 30 April 2026, Kirkland’s Am Law PEP of $11.121m is £8.188m. White & Case at $4.4m is £3.240m — still above Macfarlanes once both are in sterling.
Linklaters is the only FY26 Magic Circle reporter in this set that also prints profit per all partners: £2.31m against PEP of £2.48m, in the same 21 July 2026 announcement. That gap is the only official hint of a nonequity layer in the Magic Circle FY26 prints. It is not a salaried-partner cash band, and this page does not turn it into one.

Sterling PEP for UK reporters is the firm or Gazette print. USD for those rows is £ × 1.3582, except A&O Shearman. GBP for US rows is $ ÷ 1.3582. Slaughter and May does not publish PEP. Freshfields did not appear in the 20 August 2026 Gazette FY26 table. Keystone Law’s £243,000 is a listed ABS hybrid, not a lockstep City unit. Convert before you compare. Do not treat PEP as take-home cash.
PEP London versus the rest of the UK, in two currencies
A Kirkland equity unit at Am Law PEP is about 3.3 times Linklaters' FY26 PEP once both are in dollars at the 30 April 2026 spot. That multiple is the number a partner takes into a lateral conversation, and the number a national firm cannot match.
Domestic year-end, sterlingGlobal calendar year, dollars
- Mid-market England and Wales A survey median on domestic year-ends, mostly 31 March or 30 April. The rest of the UK partner market. Not a City lockstep unit.
- Magic Circle and UK independent Sterling PEP from a 30 April LLP pool. Global partnership, London-heavy brand, still a sterling residual.
- US-headquartered London office Dollar PEP from a global calendar-year pool. London equity partners are paid in the same currency architecture as New York or Chicago.
Across Sartori’s London interview cohort (750 structured interviews), 214 equity partners at Magic Circle, UK independent, or US-headquartered London offices over a 24-month window said they price a move by converting the destination unit into the other currency before they talk about cash. They do not read a PAYE salary line. A managing partner at a national UK firm told us they lose laterals when the candidate puts a £1.1m PEP next to a $11m Am Law unit without converting.
The arithmetic is public. Linklaters £2.48m × 1.3582 = $3.368m. Kirkland $11.121m ÷ 1.3582 = £8.188m. The multiple is 11.121 / 3.368, about 3.3 times. Latham $8.654m is £6.372m on the same spot. White & Case $4.4m is £3.240m. Macfarlanes £3.1m is $4.210m — above White & Case in dollars, still well below Latham. A&O Shearman’s own USD PEP remains $2.9m.
Above the Law, on 15 April 2026, also printed Wachtell PEP at $12.152m, Davis Polk at $9.800m, Gibson Dunn at $8.890m, Paul Weiss at $8.631m and Simpson Thacher at $8.569m. Am Law 100 PEP rose 14 percent in 2025; 70 firms grew PEP at least 10 percent; only two reported PEP declines. Those are global units. TheCityUK, in its 9 December 2025 report, wrote that all of the world’s top 50 law firms have London offices, employing more than 8,500 lawyers. That stock is not a partner headcount, and it is not converted into one here.
The rest of the UK still earns a partner figure. The Law Society Leadership and Management Section Financial Benchmarking Survey 2025, written by Hazlewoods and published 5 March 2025, recorded median net profit per equity partner of £248,985 in 2024, from £206,230 in 2023, across 145 England and Wales firms with combined fee income over £1.1bn. Median super-profit after notional salary and notional interest on partner capital was £122,019. Median fee income per equity partner was £1,104,023. Median equity partner capital was £350,672. Fee-earner-to-equity-partner gearing was 6.8 to 1. At 1.3582, that 2024 median is $338,171. It is not a City PEP, and it is not a 2025 figure.
The 2026 survey press release, 29 April 2026, covers 121 firms and prints median practice fee income up 11.2 percent in 2025, with 85 percent of firms reporting year-on-year fee growth. It does not print a 2025 median PEP. This page does not carry 2024’s £248,985 forward into 2025. Pinsent Masons is the FY26 national print that moved the other way: Legal Business, 19 August 2026, put PEP down a little over 7 percent to £740,000 on revenue of £703m after an investment year. The Gazette table of 20 August 2026 printed £747,000; this page uses the later Legal Business narrative of £740,000.

Law Society / Hazlewoods Financial Benchmarking Survey 2025 ↗Who pays the unit, and who earns it
The employer that pays PEP is the firm. The company, sponsor, bank or public body pays the firm's fees and employs its own general counsel. TheCityUK's 2025 report and the SRA's 2023 in-house snapshot are two dated cuts of that second payroll, not one collapsed percentage.
Company invoicePartner unit
- The instructing client A general counsel, chief legal officer or head of legal pays fees. The residual that becomes PEP never hits the company payroll.
- The firm profit pool A UK LLP splits a 30 April pool. A US partnership splits a calendar-year pool. London equity partners of US firms sit on the second machine.
- The equity unit PEP is what the partner earns as an owner. Nonequity and local-partner titles are a different, mostly unpublished, cash ledger.
TheCityUK, publishing on 9 December 2025, put more than one in four solicitors in-house (25 percent) and put legal-activities revenue at £52.3bn in 2024, with legal-services GVA at £38bn. The SRA’s in-house diversity snapshot, data as of 25 April 2023, put in-house solicitors at around 20 percent of practicing solicitors — 33,584 people, 66 percent in private-sector organizations. Those are two dates. They are not the same census. The later SRA thematic review counted more than 34,500 in-house solicitors in more than 6,000 organizations and named general counsel as an important leadership role. That desk hires partners out of firms. It does not pay PEP.
A general counsel at a UK-headquartered listed industrial told us they do not pay Magic Circle PEP. They pay the invoice, then watch the instructing partner leave for a US firm that prints an $8m unit. That is the company-side read of the 3.3-times multiple: it is a retention problem on the panel, not a payroll line. The in-house cash band for the person they would hire instead sits on the general counsel salary page, not on this UK partner table.
The SRA counted 178,428 practicing solicitors in July 2026 and 214,080 solicitors on the roll, with 7,674 registered foreign lawyers. In June 2026 it counted 8,916 head offices. Over 12 months to end May 2026, 346 firms opened; over 12 months to end March 2026, 519 firms closed. The Government Legal Department, in its 2025-26 annual report, had 3,603 FTE paid staff at end March 2026, around 3,000 of them lawyers and paralegals. Those public seats are civil-service grades, not equity units. The Bar Standards Board counted 19,093 practitioners including pupils as of 1 December 2025; City firms buy advocacy from chambers. They do not put barristers on PEP.
If you earn the unit, the 2026 question is which pool you sit on, and whether year one is still equity.
- Magic Circle and UK independent equity is a sterling 30 April residual. Linklaters, Clifford Chance, A&O Shearman and Macfarlanes are the FY26 prints. Slaughter and May remains unpublished.
- US London equity is a dollar calendar-year residual. Kirkland, Latham and White & Case are the 2025 units this page converts. A hiring partner at a US-headquartered London office told us they will not match sterling lockstep PEP; they sell the global dollar unit and expect the candidate to do the conversion.
- National, regional and ABS is still a profit share, at a different scale. Addleshaw Goddard printed PEP of £1.1m and 479 partners on 1 July 2026. Keystone’s Gazette PEP of £243,000 is a listed ABS hybrid.
- Nonequity and local-partner is a title with unpublished 2026 cash. Clifford Chance appointed seven Local Partners effective 1 June 2026, none of them London. Freshfields introduced a nonequity tier in February 2026. Year-one cash on a new equity seat is not the origin PEP.
If you pay the figure, you are either splitting a pool or writing fees and a payroll.
- Firm leadership splits the 30 April or calendar-year pool. PEP is the residual you have to defend against a US unit, a nonequity rung, and a counter-offer. It is not the fee the client sees.
- General counsel and chief legal officer pay the invoice. Davis Polk’s 15 January 2026 recap put US bidders in 18 of 57 UK firm offers in calendar 2025, and in 7 of 11 offers over £1bn — US corporates and sponsors as buyers of UK legal work, not as payers of PEP.
- National-company head of legal is more often competing with Eversheds, Addleshaw, Pinsents and the Law Society survey market than with Kirkland. Matching a $11m unit for an in-house legal-director seat is a category error.
- Public bodies instruct on infrastructure, inquiries and public M&A. They employ GLD, local-government and CPS lawyers. They do not print PEP.
| Reader | Earns or pays | Unit | 2026 dated print |
|---|---|---|---|
| Equity partner at a Magic Circle or UK independent firm | Earns a profit share | Sterling PEP, 30 April year-end | FY26 prints £2.2m-£3.1m at the reporters above |
| Equity partner at a US-headquartered London office | Earns a profit share from a global pool | Am Law PEP, calendar year, dollars | 2025 units $4.4m-$11.121m at the London-staffing names above |
| Equity partner at a mid-market England and Wales firm | Earns a profit share | Survey median net profit per equity partner | £248,985 on 2024 year-ends (Law Society / Hazlewoods 2025) |
| General counsel, chief legal officer or head of legal at a company | Pays fees, then in-house payroll | Invoice / PAYE, not PEP | TheCityUK: 25% of solicitors in-house (2025 print of 2024 activity) |
The company pays the invoice. The firm pays the unit.
The desks that still print the 2026 unit
Partner elections and laterals that firms announced in 2026 clustered on private equity, funds, financial markets, disputes, energy and infrastructure, and financial-services regulatory. The dated instruments below are why those desks still have a 2026 unit to split.
The Takeover Panel Annual Report 2026 recorded 60 firm offers in the year to 31 March 2026, aggregate value about £51bn, with nearly half by private equity and similar investors. Davis Polk, 15 January 2026, counted 57 firm offers in calendar 2025 for Main Market and AIM targets, aggregate over £37.8bn, average about £660m. Its 21 July 2026 mid-year recap counted 25 firm offers in H1 2026 against 37 in H1 2025, but about £35.4bn against £22.1bn, driven by three offers over £8bn. Public M&A partners stayed busy on fewer, larger, more overseas-bidder deals. That is a PEP-desk fact, not a vacancy census.
The Code itself moved twice. From 3 February 2025 it applies to UK-registered companies that are UK quoted, with a transition to 2 February 2027 for some previously covered names. From 4 February 2026, Instrument 2025/1 maps dual-class trigger events, IPO disclosure and a simplified buyback rule. Remaining public-M&A demand concentrates on Main Market and AIM. The FCA’s UK Listing Rules rewrite has been in force since 29 July 2024; it is the listing architecture those IPO-Code seats still run on.
Cabinet Office, 14 July 2026, published the NSI Act annual report for 2025-26: 1,324 notifications, up 16 percent, and nine final orders, down from 17, with one acquisition blocked. Volume is notification and condition-design, not prohibition. The CMA designated Apple and Google with strategic market status for mobile platforms on 22 October 2025. Linklaters’ FY26 letter named Competition Appeal Tribunal work among the mandates. Digital-markets and antitrust partners are a 2026 product, not a 2027 luxury.
Sizewell C’s final investment decision on 22 July 2025, construction cost around £38bn at 2024 prices, is the single largest named infrastructure mandate in the Magic Circle FY26 letters. Linklaters advised the UK government. A&O Shearman advised Sizewell C on supply chain and contracting. Addleshaw Goddard advised the UK National Wealth Fund on £36.55bn of debt financing. Energy, infrastructure and project-finance partners sit on a multi-year construction book, not a one-year spike. The Planning and Infrastructure Act 2025 received Royal Assent on the same day as the Employment Rights Act 2025 — 18 December 2025. ERA go-lives in April and October 2026, then unfair-dismissal in January 2027, are a UK-wide employment-desk driver. They are not a Magic Circle PEP driver.
Clifford Chance, 30 April 2026, announced 28 promotions effective 1 May 2026. London seats in the published list sat on funds and asset management, real estate, tax-pensions-employment, restructuring, private equity, corporate, and disputes. A&O Shearman, 15 April 2026, elected 33 partners effective 1 May 2026, nine in the United Kingdom; M&A saw the largest number, followed by global financial markets and antitrust. Its FY26 letter added 24 strategic laterals in the same year. Linklaters’ FY26 letter counted 37 elections and 12 laterals globally, with London laterals on banking and private capital. A US-headquartered London office hired a sponsor-side M&A partner on 3 August 2026 from a PE house where the person had been partner and general counsel — the in-house origin seat moving onto a dollar PEP unit.
Two transatlantic combinations reset who can sell that unit. Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer went live on 1 June 2025; first combined results (Legal Cheek, 24 July 2026) cover a full year of legacy HSF plus 11 months of Kramer Levin, PEP £1.53m. Ashurst Perkins Coie completed on 28 June 2026: 52 offices, over 950 partners, 3,500 client-facing practitioners, first full financial year from January 2027. A&O Shearman’s FY26 letter called the year a deliberate reshaping: sterling revenue £2.8bn against £2.9bn prior year, PEP still up 12 percent to $2.9m. PEP can rise while revenue in one currency does not.
Sartori’s quarterly survey since 2019 finds London firm leadership still prices laterals off the last printed PEP unit, even when the destination is a US partnership that does not publish a sterling PEP. That is why the conversion in the previous section is the conversation, not a curiosity.
Run the conversion, then run the clock.
We have worked the London partner market for more than 10 years, for law-firm leadership and for companies that instruct those firms. Typical time-to-fill on the London partner line is 4 to 7 months. The uncomfortable files are the ones where the unit has to be re-explained after the first offer.
Of 22 closed London partner searches over three years, 13 were equity laterals into private equity, funds, or energy and infrastructure seats at Magic Circle or US-headquartered London offices; 6 were national or UK-origin international seats; 3 were regional or specialist files. London partner mandate telemetry records a 43 percent counter-offer incidence on that line. The 13 high-PEP files are where a US dollar unit and a sterling lockstep PEP sit in the same conversation. They are also where we place slowly.
Of those 22 closed searches, 7 required a second pricing conversation because the candidate treated PEP as take-home cash. Four of those seven still closed inside the typical 4-to-7-month timeline; three used the full seven months. We place slowly when the unit has to be re-explained after the first offer. That is the finding that does not flatter the method: the conversion the public table makes obvious is still the step a live process misses.
Sartori & Partners runs a continuous research program over nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles mapped globally, with quarterly market surveys running since 2019. SRA admissions in the 12 months to July 2026 ran to 9,944, of which SQE accounted for 40 percent (4,019) and the LPC route 54 percent (5,391). By end December 2025 the SRA Board SQE report counted 5,374 admissions who were already qualified lawyers. That already-qualified path is how a US or other foreign partner takes an England and Wales title. A foreign lawyer who wants to be a manager of an authorized firm other than a licensed body must register as an RFL; the July 2026 census put that register at 7,674. Approval should be granted before the person takes up the role. Those clocks sit inside the 4-to-7-month search, not after it.
Origin PEP as cashDestination unit, converted
- Name the pool Sterling 30 April, dollar calendar year, or survey median. If the origin and destination are different pools, conversion is the first slide, not the last.
- Name the year-one title Equity, nonequity, local partner. An origin PEP is not a promise that year one at the destination prints the same residual.
- Name who pays The firm splits the pool. The company pays the invoice, or a PAYE package if the move is in-house. Do not price a general-counsel hire off Kirkland PEP.
Three composites, numbers inside the London partner book, clients described by category only.
- A US London private-equity seat. A US-headquartered London office asked for an equity partner with sponsor-side M&A. The origin was a Magic Circle sterling PEP. The first offer quoted the global dollar unit as if it were a raise against unconverted sterling. The candidate’s counsel treated PEP as cash. We reopened the comparable, converted at the live spot, and closed in month six after a counter-offer from the origin firm. Book verification, not the headline unit, was the longer gate.
- A national funds replacement. A UK-origin international firm with PEP in the £1.1m band lost a funds partner to a US London office. The replacement search closed. The destination could not match the dollar unit; it could match the work. Time-to-fill sat at the long end of 4 to 7 months because two of the three shortlisted books failed conflicts at the first panel of clients.
- A company-side legal-director hire. A general counsel at a PE-backed UK industrial wanted a City partner onto the payroll as legal director. The company does not pay PEP. The conversation that closed was a PAYE package against the in-house desk, plus a clear brief that instructing rights on the panel would move with the person. Treating the origin PEP as the reservation wage would have priced the seat off the market.
If you earn the figure, the work is to name the pool, convert it, and ask what year one actually prints. If you are the general counsel or the firm leadership paying it, the same sentence runs in reverse: name the comparable, then decide whether you are splitting a residual or writing an invoice. We run that conversation as a confidential partner search and, where the move is onto a company payroll, as in-house counsel recruiting. The company conversation starts on the hire side of the site.
UK partner pay 2026: questions from both sides of the table
What is law firm partner salary UK for equity partners in 2026?
Magic Circle FY26 PEP prints £2.2m–£2.48m; US London partners sit on calendar-2025 Am Law units of $4.4m–$11.121m. Those are profit-share units for the year ended 30 April 2026 (UK reporters) and calendar 2025 (Am Law), not PAYE salaries. Macfarlanes printed £3.1m, above the Magic Circle. The Law Society / Hazlewoods 2025 survey put median net profit per equity partner at £248,985 on 2024 year-ends across 145 smaller and mid-sized England and Wales firms. A general counsel instructing those firms pays the invoice, not the unit.
Is PEP London a salary, or a profit share the firm actually pays?
PEP London is a profit-share unit drawn from the LLP pool, not a PAYE salary. Linklaters’ own FY26 print, dated 21 July 2026, is £2.48m profit per equity partner and £2.31m profit per all partners for the year ended 30 April 2026. US-headquartered London offices pay London equity partners from the same global calendar-year pool the Am Law 100 prints. The corporate or fund client pays fees; it does not write the PEP check.
What is an equity partner salary UK figure at national and regional firms in 2026?
National reporters sit well below Magic Circle: Addleshaw Goddard PEP £1.1m, Pinsent Masons £740,000, TLT £635,000, Burges Salmon £616,000 on the Law Gazette Top-50 table updated 20 August 2026. The Law Society 2025 survey median of £248,985 is the rest-of-market unit, measured on 2024 year-ends. None of these is a lockstep City PAYE salary, and none is the Am Law dollar unit a US London office sells.
How should a general counsel read Magic Circle or US-firm PEP when the company pays the fees?
The company pays the invoice; TheCityUK put 25 percent of solicitors in-house in 2025. PEP is the firm’s residual after costs, not a line on the legal-department budget. Use it to understand why an instructing partner might leave for a US unit, and to price an in-house legal-director seat against payroll, not against £2.48m. In-house cash bands sit on the general-counsel salary pages, not here.
How long does a London partner hire take, and how often does a counter-offer appear?
Sartori’s London partner searches typically take 4 to 7 months, with a 43 percent counter-offer incidence on that line. We have closed 22 London partner searches over three years. Median offer-to-acceptance is 18 working days. Completion on that line is 93 percent.
Do Scotland and Northern Ireland share the England and Wales PEP table?
No. The Law Society of Scotland reported 13,300 practicing members at its June 2025 AGM; Northern Ireland still prints about 3,000 practicing certificates on its 2023-24 restatement. Neither body published a 2026 partner-PEP series in the sources for this page, so those seats are not filled in from the Gazette Top-50. A Scots or Northern Irish ticket is a separate manager-approval gate at an SRA firm.

UK PEP comes from firm announcements and from the legal press that printed the year-end. US units come from the 2026 Am Law 100. The rest-of-market median comes from the Law Society survey. Conversions use the Bank of England spot on 30 April 2026.

UK PEP is a 30 April profit-share print; Am Law PEP is a calendar-year unit. USD/GBP products on this page use the Bank of England spot of 1.3582 on 30 April 2026, except A&O Shearman's own USD PEP. The Law Society 2025 median is a 2024 year-end figure across 145 firms; the 2026 survey press release does not print PEP. Takeover Panel counts are Code-governed firm offers. TheCityUK in-house share (2025 report) and the SRA April 2023 in-house snapshot are two dated cuts. Sartori interview, survey, mapping and mandate figures are internal research, reviewed by the owner.
Our own figures — the London interview cohort, the mandate telemetry, the counter-offer incidence and the offer-to-acceptance window — come from the continuous research program described on our research page, which sets out the cohorts, the survey waves and the mapping coverage behind every Sartori number quoted above.

What partners really make in London law firms
The London-only opacity read: averages versus top of equity, lockstep, and what a published PEP still hides inside one city.

The US global units this UK table converts against: why PEP is not individual pay, and what a lateral guarantee does to the average.

Company hiringA quiet conversation
Convert the unit before you open the seat.
We will tell a general counsel when PEP is the wrong ledger, and tell firm leadership when a sterling lockstep cannot clear a dollar comparable. Confidential, no obligation. Companies first.
