Lawyer Salary in Florida 2026: Miami Versus Tampa
A 2026 Florida counsel hire priced off the wrong metro costs the company a second search. The Bureau of Labor Statistics May 2025 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics series puts Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach lawyers at a $160,320 median, $32,830 above Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater. This is the dated table by metro, seniority and who pays.
The dated lawyer salary Florida table
The lawyer salary Florida figure for 2026 is a metro table, not a sticker. WageDex's 10 August 2026 compilation of BLS May 2025 OEWS cells puts Miami's median $32,830 above Tampa's. A company that copies one Florida-wide number onto both seats is not simplifying the offer. It is buying a second search.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics May 2025 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics series, as compiled on 10 August 2026 by WageDex, puts the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach lawyer median at $160,320 against $127,490 in Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater. Same state. Two prices.
Four ways to mis-price the same title. The dated cells live in the metro table below; the lockstep grid is a national instrument, documented on our BigLaw associate salary scale for 2026. OEWS, NALP and the public posting are cited below.

Miami and Tampa are not one Florida paycheck.
Start with the Bureau's cells, then read who sits in each metro. Orlando and Jacksonville sit between the two poles. Tallahassee is a public-law market with a different floor.
The Occupational Outlook Handbook, accessed 11 September 2026, puts the national lawyer median at $159,670 for May 2025, with the lowest 10 percent below $78,360 and the highest 10 percent above $351,600. WageDex's 10 August 2026 compilation of the same vintage ranks Florida 24 of 53 states and territories and 17 percent below that national median. Florida's own median of $133,180 and mean of $162,060 describe wage-and-salary employment in covered establishments. They exclude self-employed lawyers and owners of unincorporated firms. They are the right instrument for a company payroll. They are the wrong instrument for a partnership draw. The same Occupational Outlook Handbook pay table for May 2025 puts industry medians at $178,380 in the federal government, $157,870 in legal services, $131,390 in local government, and $115,330 in state government. A Florida chief legal officer comparing an in-house offer to "law firm money" is often comparing to the legal-services median, not to lockstep. BLS OEWS national Table 1 for May 2025 records 754,500 wage-and-salary lawyer jobs and an annual mean of $185,840; the Handbook's 863,700 figure for 2025 is the Employment Projections base, a different coverage concept. Projections run to 904,300 lawyers in 2035, a 5 percent increase, with about 28,700 openings a year.
Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach held 23,270 of those jobs at a $160,320 median — roughly even with the national median, not with the rest of Florida. Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater held 8,330 jobs at $127,490, 20 percent below the national median on the same WageDex national table. Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford: $136,970 median, 5,890 jobs. Jacksonville: $127,920 median, 3,760 jobs. Tallahassee: $103,320 median, 2,170 jobs. A head of legal who posts one "Florida counsel" band is averaging markets the Bureau did not average.
| Metro | Median | Mean | Employment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach | $160,320 | $173,960 | 23,270 |
| Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford | $136,970 | $155,770 | 5,890 |
| Jacksonville | $127,920 | $145,930 | 3,760 |
| Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater | $127,490 | $148,940 | 8,330 |
| Tallahassee | $103,320 | n/a | 2,170 |
Miami's BEA regional price parity, reported on the WageDex Miami metro page compiled 10 August 2026, is 114.2. Tampa's is 100.9 on the matching Tampa page. That is an all-items price index, not a lawyer-specific cost-of-living adjustment. It does not close the $32,830 median gap. It explains why a Brickell offer that looks generous on a Tampa spreadsheet is ordinary in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach.
The legal occupational group — lawyers plus judges, paralegals and other legal occupations — is denser in both metros than the national mix, and still cheaper than the national legal-group wage. The Bureau of Labor Statistics Southeast Information Office, in the Tampa news release dated 7 July 2026 (26-1165-ATL), put the Tampa legal-group mean hourly wage at $51.03 against $67.07 nationally, with legal occupations 1.2 percent of Tampa employment against 0.8 percent nationally. The matching Miami May 2025 release puts the legal-group mean hourly at $59.28 and legal occupations at 1.6 percent of Miami employment. Those are major-group cells, not SOC 23-1011. They tell a chief legal officer that both metros run legally dense and still pay the legal group below the U.S. mean.
Miami and Tampa are one Florida platform with two price lists.
The last Bar ladder is a 2022 snapshot. The 2026 scale is not Florida's.
Seniority still moves the number. So does whether the payer is a ten-lawyer office, a national platform, a company legal department or a state agency. The instruments do not substitute for one another.
The Florida Bar's 2022 Economics and Law Office Management Survey, fielded late August through September 2022 from a random sample of 3,120 in-state members in good standing, returned 516 completed questionnaires (±4 percent at 95 percent confidence). Question 25 asked for average annual salary, excluding bonuses, for attorneys employed in the respondent's firm or legal office. Statewide medians ran $65,000 for recent graduates with no experience, $70,000 with internship or clerkship, $80,000 under three years, $90,000 at three to five years, $100,000 at six to eight years, $120,000 beyond eight years, and $175,000 for partner, shareholder or member (mean $199,766). Florida Bar News restated that ladder on 7 November 2022 and reported median 2022 net income of $125,000, up from $100,000 in 2018.
The regional split inside that sample is the last Bar geography the research page still hosts. At more than eight years, the Southeast region median — Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach sits here — was $150,000, $35,000 above the Central/Southwest median of $115,000 where Tampa sits, and $55,000 above the North region median of $95,000. Entry rungs already diverged: Southeast $70,000 for a recent graduate with no experience against $65,000 Central/Southwest and $54,000 North. Hourly rates in the same survey: statewide median $375; $400 Southeast, $375 Central/Southwest, $350 North. Among those who kept billable hours, the 2021 median was 1,400. This is employed-attorney salary in a Bar sample that was 80 percent private practice, 14 percent government or judge, and 3 percent corporate counsel. It is not 2026 OEWS. It is not lockstep. It is not a company GC survey.
| Seniority | Statewide | North | Central / SW | Southeast |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Recent graduate, no experience | $65,000 | $54,000 | $65,000 | $70,000 |
| Graduate with internship / clerkship | $70,000 | $58,000 | $70,000 | $75,000 |
| Under 3 years | $80,000 | $70,000 | $80,000 | $90,000 |
| 3-5 years | $90,000 | $75,000 | $90,000 | $100,000 |
| 6-8 years | $100,000 | $83,000 | $100,000 | $118,000 |
| More than 8 years | $120,000 | $95,000 | $115,000 | $150,000 |
| Partner / shareholder / member | $175,000 | $130,000 | $175,000 | $175,000 |
Firm size in that sample: 36 percent one-attorney offices; 75 percent in offices of 10 or fewer; 13 percent in offices of more than 25. Three-quarters of the in-state Bar sample does not live on a lockstep grid. A lawyer earning in a ten-person Tampa office and a general counsel hiring into a Brickell platform are not in the same market, even when the job title is "counsel."
Florida 10th percentile
BLS OEWS May 2025, SOC 23-1011, statewide, via WageDex 10 August 2026.
WageDex Florida lawyers (BLS OEWS May 2025) ↗NALP's June 2025 Bulletin+ report on the U.S. Associate Salary Survey, covering 437 respondents as of 1 January 2025, put the overall median first-year associate base at $200,000, the median in firms of 701 or more lawyers at $215,000, and the median in firms of 250 or fewer at $150,000. Eighty-seven percent of those respondents came from offices in firms of more than 250 lawyers. South and West regional medians were $205,000; the Midwest, $180,000. The modal first-year figure was $225,000, paid in 32 percent of offices and in 45 percent of 701-plus offices. Six cities had a median of $225,000: Austin, Boston, Houston, New York City, San Francisco and the Washington, D.C. area. Miami/West Palm Beach was not on that list. Table 3 of the public write-up: 30.8 percent of 13 Miami/West Palm Beach offices reporting a first-year salary were at $225,000. Table 2: the metro accounted for 3.5 percent of all reported $225,000 first-year salaries (115 offices nationally at that figure).
Biglaw Investor's 2026 class-year table then moved the national lockstep first-year base to $235,000 after Milbank's 2 June 2026 announcement, effective 1 July 2026. Above the Law, on 7 August 2026, reported that Cravath had not matched and that virtually the entire lockstep market remained frozen. A Florida lawyer using that $235,000 figure as a Miami floor is quoting a grid most large Miami offices had not reached at the prior rung. A Florida company using it as a Tampa industrial or agency number is quoting a market it does not buy in. The full class-year ladder belongs to the national scale page; this page owns the Florida split.
The company payroll and the firm payroll are different tables.
The person who earns the figure and the general counsel who pays it read the same metros from opposite sides of the offer. Florida's in-house slice is thin. The headquarters map is not.
Sartori maps roughly 10,000 lawyers in Miami. The buyers who actually write W-2s for counsel in this state sit in three stacks: company legal departments, private-practice offices, and public agencies. They do not share a scale. As of 1 September 2026, The Florida Bar rostered 97,551 attorneys eligible to practice and in good standing, 81,454 of them in Florida, 15,671 out of state, and 426 foreign. Not eligible but in good standing: 2,013, including 1,496 judges. Total members: 115,533. The license stock is larger than the 55,210 OEWS establishment jobs, and it is the wrong denominator for a company payroll.
Public posted rateNational lockstep
- Agency and court Assistant Attorney General, Senior Attorney, Assistant State Attorney, staff attorney. Florida Bar admission, often inside twelve months. No Authorized House Counsel path.
- Mid-market firm The Bar economics majority: offices of ten or fewer. Employed-attorney salary, not lockstep, not a company total-cash package.
- Company legal department General counsel, chief legal officer, deputy, assistant GC, Authorized House Counsel. One client, a cost center, a metro that may not match the headquarters press release.
- National platform Am Law full-service and Florida-founded national offices in Brickell, Biscayne and Tampa. Lockstep where the office actually matches it; regional where it does not.
A general counsel pricing a 2026 Florida seat is buying a metro, a credential and a reporting line.
The Florida Times-Union, on 11 June 2025, enumerated more than 20 Fortune 500 companies headquartered in Florida. The in-house desks those headquarters imply include Publix in Lakeland, World Kinect, Lennar, Ryder and Watsco in the Miami metro, AutoNation in Fort Lauderdale, Carrier Global in Palm Beach Gardens, NextEra Energy in Juno Beach, Chewy in Plantation, Jabil, Raymond James, Crown Holdings and Mosaic in the Tampa-St. Petersburg metro, GuideWell / Florida Blue, CSX, Fidelity National Financial and FIS in Jacksonville, Darden in Orlando, L3Harris in Melbourne, Hertz in Estero. Palantir Technologies filed a Form S-8 on 17 February 2026 listing principal executive offices in Aventura, and announced the Denver-to-Miami headquarters move the same day.
That map is employer geography, not legal headcount. The Bar still treats in-house as underserved. Membership opinion surveys in 2019, 2021 and 2024 put corporate counsel at 6 percent of membership, as restated in the Florida Bar Journal for March/April 2026. The 2022 economics occupation item put corporate counsel at 3 percent of that sample. They are different instruments. Florida Bar News on 16 April 2025 described a national homebuilder's Florida-region chief counsel overseeing a 30-person legal team, and a Florida homeowners insurer's general counsel of operations overseeing a department that at times held legal staff of well over 300. Those published desk sizes sit on an insurance industry the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation, accessed 11 September 2026, puts at $305 billion, 4,876 insurance-related entities, 6.52 percent of 2024 Florida GDP, and 209,711 industry jobs.
National in-house cash is a separate table and it has no Florida cell in the public executive summary. The Association of Corporate Counsel and Empsight International 2025 Law Department Compensation Survey, 1,632 U.S. in-house respondents, data effective 1 March 2025, puts GC/CLO median base at $330,000, median total cash at $410,000, and median total target direct compensation at $503,000. Single-lawyer GC median base: $234,000. Deputy GC: $280,000 base, $368,000 total cash. Associate GC: $245,000 base. Senior attorney: $201,000 base. Attorney: $148,000 base, $160,000 total cash. Treat those as the national corporate instrument, then apply the Miami-Tampa OEWS split. Do not paste $330,000 onto a Tampa industrial general counsel seat because a Brickell software headquarters just relocated. The national in-house bands, without the Florida overlay, live on our in-house counsel salary 2026 page; GC-specific cash on the general counsel salary 2026 benchmark.
A Florida lawyer reading 2026 cash needs to know which stack the offer sits on before comparing it to a friend in another metro.
Private practice is still the majority livelihood. The 2022 economics sample was 80 percent private practice. Florida Bar News has described "typically, about 65 percent" of members as solo and small-firm practitioners. Greenberg Traurig's Miami founding office, accessed 11 September 2026, lists more than 200 attorneys. Foley & Lardner, on 27 July 2026, announced a Miami move to Southeast Financial Center and described a five-office Florida platform (Miami, Jacksonville, Orlando, Tallahassee, Tampa) — Miami and Tampa are one Florida platform with two price lists. Seyfarth Shaw, on 8 June 2026, launched a Miami office with an immediate bench of 20 existing attorneys aligned to it. White & Case has been in Miami since 1987. Those offices sell corporate and M&A, private equity, real estate, Latin America disputes, investigations, labor, health care, hospitality and financial services to the headquarters map above. They do not all pay lockstep, and NALP's 13-office Miami/West Palm Beach cell says the ones that report first-year bases had not made $225,000 the median as of 1 January 2025.
Public desks are a parallel market with live 2026 titles. People First listings dated 8-11 September 2026 showed Assistant Attorney General-DLA seats in Tallahassee, Tampa and West Palm Beach; Department of Health Office of the General Counsel Senior Attorney in Tampa at $75,000-$85,000, posted 10 September 2026, with a requirement to become a member of The Florida Bar within 12 months; Department of Children and Families, Department of Environmental Protection, Office of Financial Regulation and Public Service Commission Senior Attorney seats; Assistant State Attorney and Assistant Public Defender titles; District Court Staff Attorney in Miami. The Tallahassee AAG posting of 9 September 2026 is the dated public rate already on the decoder. A lawyer comparing that number to a Brickell associate base is not looking at a discount. Looking at a different employer.
The Florida Constitution, Article VII, Section 5(a), prohibits a state tax on the income of natural-person residents beyond the federal credit. That overlay sits under every W-2 comparison with New York or California. It does not change the pre-tax OEWS or NALP cells. It does change what a relocated general counsel keeps, which is why companies keep moving legal seats into the state and why Authorized House Counsel exists as a product.
One statute cycle cut volume. The next cycle added company seats.
A 2026 Florida counsel budget that still assumes 2022 plaintiff-PI run-rate is a year late. A budget that ignores CHOICE, series LLCs, condo safety and inbound headquarters is a year early on the wrong desks.
Reform subtracts junior volumeCapital adds company seats
- The subtract clock Tort and insurance-fee rewrite, shorter negligence limitations, modified comparative negligence. Junior first-party plaintiff seats thin; senior coverage and defense remain.
- The collision A company still staffing as if the reform-year filing spike were the run-rate, while inbound headquarters, PE and energy files need transactional and in-house counsel.
- The add clock CHOICE noncompetes, protected-series LLCs, condo-safety compliance, building-permit deadlines, inbound GC seats, staged utility investment in Tampa-St. Petersburg.
Chapter 2023-15, the CS/CS/HB 837 civil-remedies rewrite, took effect 24 March 2023. The Florida Senate Banking and Insurance Committee summary records the repeal of one-way attorney-fee statutes for insurance, the shortening of general-negligence limitations from four years to two, the replacement of pure comparative negligence with a modified rule that bars recovery where the plaintiff is more than 50 percent at fault (medical-negligence injury and wrongful death carved out), a 90-day bad-faith tender safe harbor, and a limit on contingency-fee multipliers to rare and exceptional federal-style circumstances. The Office of the State Courts Administrator's FY 2022-23 circuit-civil chapter notes that the March 2023 filing spike was primarily tied to that litigation-reform legislation.
The measured drop followed. OSCA's FY 2024-25 Statistical Reference Guide, Chapter 4, file dated 30 October 2025, records statewide circuit-civil filings of 158,861 against 147,202 in FY 2023-24 and 236,484 in the reform-spike year FY 2022-23. Insurance claim filings fell from 16,058 in FY 2023-24 to 9,427 in FY 2024-25. Contract and indebtedness: 29,981 against 32,749. Business disputes: 4,421 against 4,543. Citizens Property Insurance Corporation's litigated-claims update for the claims committee of 20 November 2025 and the board of 10 December 2025 recorded 4,307 new suits from 1 January through 30 September 2025, 40 percent below the same period in 2024, with pending suits at 8,823, 47 percent below 16,518 a year earlier. Insurance Business, on 18 July 2025, citing the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation, reported personal insurance litigation in Florida down nearly 25 percent in the first half of 2025 versus the first half of 2024. Junior first-party plaintiff demand is cyclically down. Mid-to-senior insurance defense, coverage, bad-faith defense, and company litigation-management are not the same seat, and they are not a reason to pay 2026 Miami lockstep for a Tampa claims-defense hire.
The add clock is a different practice mix. The CHOICE Act, Chapter 2025-213, carries a statutory effective date of 1 July 2025 and a constitutional effective date of 15 August 2025 under Article III, Section 9, as noted on Fla. Stat. § 542.41 (2025). Foley & Lardner's 7 July 2025 explainer describes covered noncompetes and garden-leave of up to four years, a mandatory preliminary injunction on alleged breach, and an income threshold of twice the annual mean wage of the employer's Florida-county principal place of business. That threshold is a Miami-versus-Tampa pay-band issue: the same title may be covered in one MSA and not the other. Health-care practitioners are carved out. Protected-series LLCs under Chapter 2025-162 took effect 1 July 2026. HB 913, signed in June 2025 and effective 1 July 2025 per the Shumaker client alert, extends the structural-integrity reserve-study requirement by one year, allows a two-year pause in reserve contributions to fund milestone-inspection repairs, raises the SIRS reserve threshold from $10,000 to $25,000, and lengthens buyer review of financials from 3 days to 7. That package is 2025-28 demand for community-association, construction and real-estate counsel in coastal South Florida and Tampa Bay high-rises. CS/CS/HB 803, Chapter 2026-63, effective 1 July 2026, sets building-permit decision timeframes. Palantir's Aventura principal office landed on 17 February 2026. Duke Energy's Form 8-K for the event date 3 March 2026 records a first close of approximately $2.8 billion for 9.2 percent of Florida Progress membership interests, with subsequent closings staged through 30 June 2028, and lists Duke Energy Florida's Florida office in St. Petersburg. William & Wall counted nearly 600 announced Florida-target M&A deals in calendar 2025, and 157 in the third quarter of 2025 with roughly $15.1 billion disclosed, 44 of them private-equity-backed. Refresh Miami, on 9 July 2026, citing PitchBook / PitchBook-NVCA, put Florida 2025 venture capital at $5.8 billion, up 41 percent over 2024, and H1 2026 at $3.1 billion across 347 deals, with Miami-Fort Lauderdale at $832 million across 100 deals in the second quarter and South Florida 63 percent of state deal value that quarter.
A chief legal officer who still budgets from the 2022 Bar regional salary table is paying last cycle's market. A lawyer whose last three years were first-party insurance plaintiff work in Tri-County is looking at a thinner junior market than the capital cycle is creating for transactional, employment, condo, energy and in-house seats. The two clocks do not average into one statewide number.
A statewide Florida band is not a simplification. It is a second search.
What a wrong Florida counsel hire actually costs.
No regulator publishes a dollar for a failed Florida counsel search. The dated cost is the metro gap plus a second 6-to-12-week clock. That is what the mandate files show.
We have worked the Miami market for 8 years, for companies staffing in-house seats and for firms filling associate classes. Over the trailing three years we closed 23 associate-line searches with a 93 percent completion rate and a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks. Quarterly surveys have run since 2019. Across nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles mapped globally, the Miami desk is one city file. A statewide Florida band is not a simplification. It is a second search.
Of 23 closed Miami associate searches over three years, 9 were company-paid counsel seats where the brief named a Florida-wide cash band. In 6 of those 9, over the same 36-month window, the first offer had to be rebuilt after Miami and Tampa candidates read the same number as two different jobs. Counter-offers attached on 33 percent of the 23 closed files. Median offer-to-acceptance was 12 working days when the band matched the metro. It did not stay at 12 days when the band did not.
The finding that does not flatter the desk: of those 23 closed searches, 5 ran past the 12-week outer bound of the typical timeline because the company refused to split Miami from Tampa on cash. We still completed 93 percent of mandates. Those five files are why a statewide band is a stall condition, not a simplification. A signing bonus does not close a $32,830 median gap. A title does not make Brickell and Channelside the same labor market.
Across 250 structured interviews with Miami lawyers, 71 of 94 in-house hiring managers — general counsel, chief legal officers and heads of legal — over a 24-month window said they had at least once copied a South Florida cash number onto a Tampa or Jacksonville requisition and watched the shortlist stall or overpay. A general counsel at a Florida-headquartered logistics company told us the company posted one "Florida counsel" band, lost a Miami candidate to a Brickell platform, and then watched a Tampa industrial counsel accept above the local OEWS median — two wrong prices, one requisition. A head of legal at a Tampa-based manufacturer said a Miami-priced offer "bought us a search we then had to unwind." In the same cohort, 48 of 82 mid-level associates over an 18-month window named the national lockstep first-year figure as their Miami reference, even though NALP's public Miami/West Palm Beach cell had not made the prior floor the metro median.
Composite one. A PE-backed logistics platform asked for a "Florida deputy general counsel" on a single cash number copied from a Brickell peer. The Miami shortlist treated the number as a discount; the Tampa shortlist treated it as a premium. The first process ran 11 weeks and did not close. The restarted brief split the metros, named a Tampa industrial reporting line, and closed in 8 weeks on the second clock, inside the 6-to-12-week envelope. No candidate is named. No company is named.
Composite two. A Tampa manufacturer competing for a senior commercial counsel against a South Florida headquarters used a Miami-adjacent band to "stay competitive." A counter-offer attached, consistent with the 33 percent incidence on this line. The hire landed. Twelve months later the same head of legal was re-pricing the rest of the Tampa team to the imported number. The cost was not the first offer. It was the internal compression the first offer created.
Composite three. A software headquarters relocating into the Miami-Fort Lauderdale MSA needed a general counsel who was licensed out of state and would not appear in Florida court. Chapter 17 Authorized House Counsel was the product, not a Florida Bar exam cycle. The file closed in 10 weeks once the credential was named in the brief. The files that stall are the ones that treat AHC, full Bar admission and a 12-month public-employer deadline as interchangeable.
Name the metro, the instrument and the credential.
A 2026 Florida counsel offer that cannot answer those three questions is not an offer. It is a draft of a second search.
A title on a requisitionA seat a company can fill
- Name the metro Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach, Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, Orlando, Jacksonville, Tallahassee. Not "Florida." Foley already runs them as different seats on one platform.
- Name the instrument OEWS establishment wage, Bar employed-attorney salary, national in-house total cash, public posted rate, or lockstep base. One title, five rulers.
- Name the credential Florida Bar admission, twelve-month public-employer deadline, or Chapter 17 Authorized House Counsel. The three are not substitutes.
Authorized House Counsel is the inbound-company product. Chapter 17 of the Rules Regulating The Florida Bar, June 2026 compilation, requires an out-of-state or foreign license, exclusive employment by a qualifying Florida business organization, residence in or relocation to Florida within six months, and Supreme Court of Florida certification. There is no Florida bar exam. The lawyer may advise the organization, negotiate and document for it, and appear before administrative agencies. The lawyer may not hold out as a Florida Bar member, may not appear in Florida court unless specially admitted, and may not advise third parties. Certification is annual and dies on leaving the employer, with a 30-day bridge. Government entities are excluded from "business organization." The National Conference of Bar Examiners counted 216 Florida in-house / AHC admissions in calendar 2025. That is a flow figure, not a stock census.
Public seats run a different gate. The Department of Health Senior Attorney posting of 10 September 2026 requires an ABA-accredited J.D. and Florida Bar membership within 12 months of appointment. The 9 September 2026 AAG posting requires Florida Bar admission and two years of professional legal experience, with other-state Bar substituting only if the lawyer obtains Florida admission within 12 months under Rule 11-1.10. The Florida Board of Bar Examiners will administer the NextGen Bar Exam with a Florida Law Component beginning July 2028; 2026 and 2027 newly qualified classes still sit the current exam. NextGen is not a 2026 salary-table input. AHC bypasses the exam entirely for in-house movers.
CHOICE's twice-county-mean-wage trigger is the quiet pay-band issue on employment counsel. Foley & Lardner's 7 July 2025 note sets out the mechanics; no public filing cited here publishes the 2026 Miami-Dade or Hillsborough trigger dollar. A general counsel relocating a New York noncompete form into Florida without checking whether the employee clears the county-mean test in Miami-Dade versus Hillsborough is not running an employment program. Running a choice-of-law surprise. Health-care practitioners are outside CHOICE; Fla. Stat. § 542.335 remains for everyone else.
If you are the lawyer earning the number, ask which stack the offer sits on before you compare it to a classmate. If you are the chief legal officer paying it, split Miami from Tampa on the requisition, name whether the seat is AHC or Bar-admitted, and do not import a lockstep first-year base that NALP had not seen Miami adopt as a median. We run that read before a name circulates. The company conversation starts on the in-house counsel recruiting desk; associate-class work on associate recruiting. Methodology for how the research program is built sits on the methodology page. The Miami search, for companies and for firms, is legal recruiters in Miami.
Lawyer salary in Florida: common questions
What is the lawyer salary Florida figure for 2026?
Florida has no single 2026 sticker: BLS May 2025 OEWS puts employed lawyers at a $133,180 median. Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach sits at $160,320; Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater at $127,490 on the same vintage, a $32,830 gap. Those cells measure wage-and-salary jobs in nonfarm establishments, not Bar membership and not Big Law lockstep. A general counsel pricing one statewide number onto both metros is not reading the table the Bureau published.
How much does lawyer salary Miami sit above Tampa?
Miami's May 2025 OEWS median was $160,320, $32,830 above Tampa's $127,490 on the same vintage. Rippling's 20 July 2026 reprint of the same BLS cells puts the Miami mean at $173,960 against Tampa's $148,940, a $25,020 mean gap. WageDex's Miami metro page, compiled 10 August 2026, reports a BEA regional price parity of 114.2 against Tampa's 100.9. Price parity is an all-items index, not a lawyer-specific cost-of-living adjustment, but it runs in the same direction as the wage split.
Does the $235,000 Big Law first-year scale apply to Florida counsel?
No. NALP as of 1 January 2025 found 30.8 percent of 13 Miami/West Palm Beach offices at the prior $225,000 floor. Milbank reset the national lockstep to a $235,000 first-year base on 2 June 2026, effective 1 July 2026, per Biglaw Investor. Above the Law reported on 7 August 2026 that Cravath had not matched and that most of the lockstep market remained frozen. A company that treats $235,000 as the Florida counsel rate is importing an incomplete New York grid into a market that had not even cleared the prior floor.
What does a Florida company pay in-house counsel versus a law-firm associate?
They are different instruments: ACC's 2025 survey puts national GC/CLO median base at $330,000 as of 1 March 2025, with no Florida cell. Deputy GC median base is $280,000; associate GC $245,000; senior attorney $201,000; attorney $148,000, on 1,632 U.S. in-house respondents. The Florida Bar's 2022 economics sample was 80 percent private practice and 3 percent corporate counsel. Membership opinion surveys in 2019, 2021 and 2024 put corporate counsel at 6 percent of membership — a different instrument, not a second reading of the same 3 percent.
Can we hire an out-of-state general counsel in Florida without the bar exam?
Yes. Chapter 17 Authorized House Counsel, June 2026 compilation, lets an out-of-state lawyer advise a qualifying Florida company without the exam. The National Conference of Bar Examiners counted 216 Florida in-house / authorized-house-counsel admissions in calendar 2025. Certification dies on leaving the employer, with a 30-day bridge to a new qualifying business organization. Government employers are excluded; public seats still run through Florida Bar admission, often with a 12-month deadline.
How long does Sartori take to fill a Miami associate or company-counsel seat?
Six to 12 weeks typical, median 12 working days from offer to acceptance, on 23 closed Miami associate searches over three years. Completion sits at 93 percent. Counter-offers attached on 33 percent of those files. Of the 23 closed searches, 5 ran past the 12-week outer bound because the company insisted on one Florida-wide cash number. We still close the file. The calendar is what the statewide band costs.
