In-house legal recruiters in Orlando

Retained search for a general counsel or a chief executive hiring someone whose office is in Orlando and whose license, pay, and notice are three different instruments.

In house legal recruiters Orlando are retained when a general counsel or a chief executive hires for a Central Florida company. Sartori & Partners has completed 400+ placements since 2017 (230+ in-house), including 52 general counsel and chief legal officer searches. Those searches reach a shortlist in 24 days and an accepted offer in a median of 11 weeks, range 8 to 16, from 2017 through 2026. A NASDAQ-listed medtech in Boston hired a successor general counsel in week 11, from a shortlist of four on day 24. The May 2025 lawyer median in Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford is $136,970.

01 — The brief answer

Orlando hires a headquarters counsel, not a Florida average.

A chief executive writes “Florida” on the requisition and prices the seat off a statewide lawyer median. The headquarters that actually sit in Orlando do not hire that way. Darden’s restaurant support center, Marriott Vacations Worldwide, and Hilton Grand Vacations each print an Orlando address in a 2026 filing. A lawyer who has run franchise and guest-facing compliance for a restaurant group is not, by that fact, the lawyer who has registered vacation-ownership product. The hire fails when the brief treats Central Florida as one bench.

That is the work in-house counsel recruiting is retained to do in this metro. The firm was founded in early 2017 by Lorenzo Sartori. The US hubs are New York, opened in 2023, and California and Texas, opened in 2024. An Orlando file is run from that book. The market map is 1,480,000+ lawyers. It is the only map figure used. There is no Orlando-only count of closed in-house searches, and none is stated. The clock is the corporate book on the case studies, not a claim that those 52 general counsel sit in this metro.

Private-practice context for the city is on legal recruitment in Orlando. The metro wage row, set beside Miami and Tampa on the same Bureau vintage, is on lawyer salary in Florida, 2026. Officer-level cash, as a national band rather than an Orlando print, is on general counsel salary, 2026.

02 — The local market

The employers that print a headquarters are already three different legal desks.

The Florida Bar’s roster report, as of 30 September 2026, counted 98,680 attorneys eligible to practice, of whom 82,422 were located in Florida, and 116,125 members in total. That is a statewide license count. It is not an Orlando headcount, and it is not the Bureau of Labor Statistics count of wage-and-salary lawyer jobs. The National Conference of Bar Examiners, in its 2025 statistics on attorneys admitted as in-house counsel, counted 216 such admissions in Florida and 1,828 across every jurisdiction in that table. The 216 is a one-year flow of admissions. It is not a census of Orlando legal departments, and it is not added to the 82,422.

What the filings do locate is the employer. Darden Restaurants, Inc., a Florida corporation, lists its principal executive offices at 1000 Darden Center Drive, Orlando, Florida, in the Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended 31 May 2026. Common stock trades on the New York Stock Exchange. The same filing reports 209,931 total team members, hourly and salaried. That figure includes restaurant teams across the brands. It is not the size of the legal department, and it is not a count of people whose desk is at the Orlando support center. The legal work a multi-brand restaurant issuer staffs is franchise, guest privacy, food safety, and securities disclosure. The 2026 proxy records a change in the chair itself: the former senior vice president, general counsel, chief compliance officer and corporate secretary retired effective 1 February 2026, and the proxy identifies a successor in that combined legal and compliance office from February 2026. A combined GC and chief compliance officer seat is a different brief from a pure commercial counsel seat.

Marriott Vacations Worldwide Corporation lists its principal executive offices at 7812 Palm Parkway, Orlando, Florida, in the Form 10-K filed with the SEC on 2 March 2026, for the year ended 31 December 2025. Common stock trades on the New York Stock Exchange. The human-capital section of that filing says that as of 31 December 2025 the company had approximately 21,100 associates, of which approximately 16,200, stated in the filing as 77 percent, were based in the United States. The 21,100 is the company, including resort operations. It is not the legal department. The legal work a vacation-ownership issuer staffs is timeshare registration, consumer finance, resort management agreements, and brand licenses. That is a different bench from a restaurant lawyer.

Hilton Grand Vacations Inc., a Delaware corporation, lists its principal executive offices, and describes its main corporate headquarters, at 6355 MetroWest Boulevard, Suite 180, Orlando, Florida, in the Form 10-K filed 26 February 2026. Common stock trades on the New York Stock Exchange. The same filing says that as of 31 December 2025 the company had over 200 properties and more than 720,000 club members. Properties and members are not employees and not lawyers. The 2026 proxy prints a different Orlando mailing address for the principal executive office, 5323 Millenia Lakes Boulevard, Suite 400. The two addresses are left as the two documents print them. They are not averaged into one campus. A vacation-ownership general counsel at either issuer is a real-estate and consumer-finance seat. When the chair itself is open, the brief moves to real estate general counsel search. The three issuers are three benches. A search that treats them as one pool of “Orlando counsel” stalls.

03 — Compensation

The number a posting can print is a lawyer median, not a general counsel package.

O*NET’s 2025 wage table for lawyers, drawn from the Bureau of Labor Statistics occupational survey, puts Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford at $78,770 at the 10th percentile, $99,750 at the 25th, $136,970 at the median, $179,310 at the 75th, and $265,810 at the 90th. The same table puts the Florida lawyer median at $133,180 and the United States lawyer median at $159,670. The Orlando median sits $3,790 above the Florida median and $22,700 below the United States median. Those gaps are the difference between the printed cells. They are not a cost-of-living adjustment. WageDex’s compilation of the same May 2025 survey lists 5,890 lawyer jobs in the metro and a mean of $155,770. The mean is not the median. The 5,890 is wage-and-salary employment in the occupational survey. It is not The Florida Bar’s 82,422 lawyers located in Florida.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics news release for May 2025 reports a different cut. Legal occupations as a major group had a mean hourly wage of $51.13 in the Orlando area, against $67.07 in the United States, and accounted for 0.9 percent of local employment against 0.8 percent nationally. That group includes more than lawyers. It is not the $136,970 median, and the two figures are not averaged. Lawyer salary in Florida, 2026 prints the same metro row beside Miami and Tampa.

A general counsel package, when the person is a named executive officer, is on a proxy, not on the occupational table. Darden’s 2026 proxy statement, filed 10 August 2026, reports the fiscal 2025 summary compensation table for its former senior vice president, general counsel, chief compliance officer and corporate secretary as salary of $643,077 and a total of $3,011,426, for the year ended 25 May 2025. For the year ended 31 May 2026 the same table reports salary of $450,000, stock awards of $1,485,540, option awards of $415,008, non-equity incentive plan compensation of $592,875, all other compensation of $305,158, and a total of $3,248,581. The proxy states that the fiscal 2026 salary is pay earned through retirement on 1 February 2026 and has not been annualized. The $450,000 is not a full-year base. The $643,077 is the full-year salary line. The salary and the total are not the same number.

Hilton Grand Vacations’ 2026 proxy reports the 2025 summary compensation table for its senior executive vice president, general counsel and corporate operations, and secretary as salary of $622,712, stock awards of $2,187,432, non-equity incentive plan compensation of $1,879,688, all other compensation of $28,205. The table prints a total of $4,718,036. The compensation discussion states that the committee set that officer’s 2025 base salary at $625,000. The $622,712 is salary earned. The $625,000 is the base the committee set. Neither figure is the printed total, and the total is not the firm’s published median total of $4.76 million for sitting general counsel who are named executive officers at 236 of the largest US-listed companies in the 2026 proxy season. That $4.76 million is a large-company total. It is not blended into base, and it is not a Darden figure or a Hilton Grand Vacations figure.

The firm’s published US bands, which are not an Orlando survey, put a mid-cap listed general counsel at $450,000 to $650,000 base with a 60 to 100 percent bonus, and a large-cap listed general counsel at $650,000 to $1.1 million base. Darden’s fiscal 2025 salary of $643,077 and Hilton Grand Vacations’ 2025 base of $625,000 can be read against the mid-cap base band. The proxies do not, by themselves, assign either issuer to that band. The $3,011,426 total and the $4,718,036 total are not bases inside it. Where a band is not on a filing, the offer is built from the seat, not imported from another city. The national officer page is general counsel salary, 2026.

04 — Notice and licensing

The statute that writes a notice period applies only when the agreement exists.

Florida does not impose a statutory notice period of the kind a UK statute imposes before a counsel can leave, unless the person has signed a covered garden leave agreement. Florida Statutes section 542.44, in the 2025 statutes, is that agreement. It was created by chapter 2025-213, the CHOICE Act. The Florida House page for section 542.44 notes that the chapter became law without the Governor’s signature on 3 July 2025, and records a constitutional effective date of 15 August 2025. A covered employee, under the act, earns or is reasonably expected to earn a salary greater than twice the annual mean wage of the Florida county where the employer has its principal place of business. If that principal place of business is not in Florida, the test uses the county where the employee resides. The act excludes a health-care practitioner as defined in section 456.001. Salary, for the test, is base compensation calculated on an annualized basis. It does not include bonuses, commissions, or discretionary incentives. A named-executive total is not the salary the test uses.

Where a covered garden leave agreement is in place, the employee and the employer agree to up to 4 years of advance notice, the employee agrees not to resign before the end of that notice period, and the employer agrees to keep paying the same salary and providing the same benefits the employee received in the last month before the notice period began. The employer is not obligated to keep paying discretionary incentive compensation, and is not obligated to have the employee keep working. After the first 90 days of the notice period, the employee does not have to provide services. The employer may shorten the notice period by giving at least 30 days’ advance notice in writing. The proposed agreement has to be given at least 7 days before the offer of employment, or the offer to enter the agreement, expires, and the employee has to be advised in writing of the right to seek counsel. That is a contractual notice the statute will enforce. It is not the background rule for every Orlando resignation.

Florida Statutes section 448.08, in the 2025 statutes, says that in an action for unpaid wages the court may award the prevailing party the costs of the action and a reasonable attorney’s fee. The section is a fee-shifting rule. It does not tell a resigning counsel how many weeks of notice the old employer can require, and it does not set a day-of-discharge wage rule. The start date on an Orlando hire, when no covered garden leave agreement exists, is the date in the current employment agreement, or the date the parties waive. The search clock ends at acceptance. Notice, if the contract or a covered agreement has any, runs after it.

The license is the clock that does move the search, and it is statewide rather than municipal. Chapter 17 of the Rules Regulating The Florida Bar, in the June 2026 compilation, lets a lawyer licensed outside Florida perform legal services in Florida while exclusively employed by a business organization located in Florida, without taking the Florida bar examination. The person must be residing in Florida or relocating to Florida for that employment within 6 months of the application. If the registrant is already employed in Florida, authorization becomes effective on the date the clerk of the Supreme Court of Florida approves the certification. If the registrant is relocating, authorization becomes effective on the date of employment, and that employment date must fall within 6 months of the application. The certification is annual. The annual fee is the same fee paid by active members of The Florida Bar. The Florida Bar reported on 27 April 2026 that the active-member fee remains $265.

The Florida Bar’s authorized-house-counsel checklist states a filing fee of $1,650 and states that fees are not refundable. The $1,650 is a filing fee, not compensation. Rule 17-1.5 says authorization ceases when the employment with the business organization ends, unless the lawyer begins employment with another business organization within 30 days and that organization provides the certificate the rule requires. Notice of the ending, or the new certificate, has to be filed with The Florida Bar within 30 days. The 30-day bridge is not a right to keep advising the old employer, and it is not the CHOICE Act’s 90-day work rule. An out-of-state license labeled “close enough for Orlando” is the wrong instrument. The 216 Florida in-house-counsel admissions in calendar 2025 measure admissions. They do not measure how long the clerk takes, and they do not shorten the 11-week search.

05 — Timeline

Eleven weeks is the firm GC clock. It is not the start date.

General counsel and chief legal officer searches, 52 of them since 2017, reach a shortlist in 24 days on average and an accepted offer in a median of 11 weeks, with a range of 8 to 16. Deputy general counsel and head of legal searches, 47 of them, run to a shortlist in 21 days and an offer in 10 weeks. Retained corporate mandates complete at 92 percent. Offer acceptance is 96 percent. Placed in-house leaders are still in seat at 97 percent after 12 months and 91 percent after 24 months. The replacement term on a retained GC, CLO, or CCO search is 12 months. On other in-house searches it is 6 months. The fee is retained only: 25 to 30 percent of total first-year compensation, with 30 percent of that fee paid at engagement and kept if the client cancels.

A NASDAQ-listed medtech in Boston hired a successor general counsel on the GC clock: a shortlist of four on day 24, accepted offer in week 11, and the 12-month retention checkpoint held. The general counsel there later said the shortlist arrived in just over three weeks, every name could already sit with the board, and the person hired was still in post two years later. A venture-backed SaaS company in California hired its first general counsel with a shortlist on day 24 and an accepted offer in week 10, still in post at 24 months. A PE-backed industrial group in Houston hired a deputy general counsel from a shortlist in 18 days, with the accepted offer in week 8. None of those files is an Orlando mandate. They are the published evidence for the clock. An Orlando file is run on that clock because the firm does not keep a second one for this metro.

Where Orlando changes the calendar is after acceptance, and before launch if the license is wrong. After acceptance, notice is the employment contract, or a covered garden leave agreement under section 542.44: up to 4 years, with no duty to keep working after the first 90 days. Before launch, a lawyer who is not admitted in Florida and who will practice for an Orlando business organization needs a Chapter 17 certificate. Authorization dates from the clerk’s approval if the person is already employed in Florida, and from the employment start if the person is relocating. That start has to fall within 6 months of the application.

Interim cover is the bridge when the contract will not move and the desk cannot wait. Interim and fractional legal talent is a separate book from the 400+ placements (230+ in-house): 60+ engagements, with a median of 7 days from first call to start. It does not convert an out-of-state license into a Chapter 17 certificate. It covers the work while the permanent search, or the certification, runs.

06 — How a file is run

The brief names the employer, the license, and the printed pay.

The retained steps are the same in Orlando as on any other corporate mandate. Week 1 is the written seat: which decisions the hire owns, whether the advice is Florida law, and who the employer is. The market map is the 1,480,000+ lawyer coverage the firm already holds. Outreach stays confidential until the reporting line and the license path are settled. The shortlist on a GC search is the 24-day mark. Closing includes contractual notice, or covered garden leave if an agreement exists. The off-limits term on the client’s legal department is 24 months after a mandate, and a lawyer the firm has placed is not approached while that lawyer remains in that seat.

Three Orlando questions have to be answered in that first week, or the later weeks are spent re-deciding them. First, is the person already a member of The Florida Bar, or will the seat depend on a Chapter 17 certificate, including the $1,650 filing fee and the clerk’s approval. Second, is the client a restaurant issuer, or a vacation-ownership issuer, because those benches do not substitute for one another. Third, which printed number is the candidate being shown: the 2025 lawyer median of $136,970, Darden’s fiscal 2025 salary of $643,077, Hilton Grand Vacations’ 2025 salary of $622,712, or one of the proxy totals. Those numbers are not one package. A counsel who is shown the occupational median and then handed a named-executive total has been shown two different instruments.

A chief financial officer at a London-headquartered private-credit manager put the engagement rule in one place: “Fee, replacement window and off-limits were in the letter before they called anyone. That is the only way I will sign a search firm. The hire accepted on the first offer.” That file is not an Orlando file. The rule is the one an Orlando chief executive is asked to sign. Fee, the 12-month or 6-month replacement term, and the off-limits period go in the letter first. The 30 percent retainer is paid at engagement.

General counsel search is the officer-seat practice when the hire is the first GC or the successor. The city layer under that practice is the employers, the printed pay, the certificate, and the notice statute. In-house counsel recruiting in Tampa is the nearest Florida city page already in the matrix. Its closed-search count is not an Orlando tally.

Successor general counsel, NASDAQ-listed medtech

Boston · one of 52 GC/CLO searches · blind process

Mandate
Replace a sitting general counsel who was still in post, without the market being told the company was looking.
Complication
The process had to stay blind. The 12-month replacement term was in the letter before anyone was called.
Outcome
A shortlist of four reached the board on day 24. The accepted offer closed in week 11. The 12-month retention checkpoint held. The general counsel’s account: “The shortlist arrived in just over three weeks and every name could already sit with our board. The person we hired is still in post two years later.” Full file: GC succession, Boston.

First general counsel, venture-backed SaaS

California · one of 52 GC/CLO searches · still in post at 24 months

Mandate
The board had outgrown outside counsel. The hire was the company’s first general counsel.
Complication
The relevant people were sitting deputy general counsel in software, not partners who wanted a title.
Outcome
Shortlist on day 24. Accepted offer in week 10. In post at the 24-month checkpoint, against program retention of 91 percent at 24 months. Full file: first GC, California.

Deputy general counsel, PE-backed industrial

Houston · one of 47 deputy GC / head of legal placements

Mandate
A carve-out that needed a deputy who had already lived with a transition, and who could face a public-company cadence if the sponsor listed.
Complication
The program deputy clock is 21 days to a shortlist and 10 weeks to an offer. This file had to move inside that clock.
Outcome
Shortlist in 18 days. Accepted offer in week 8. Full file: deputy GC, Houston.

In-house counsel in Orlando — common questions

What do in house legal recruiters Orlando companies actually hire for?

They are retained when a general counsel or a chief executive needs a lawyer for a company whose headquarters is in Orlando, not a Florida-wide average. Sartori & Partners has completed 400+ placements since 2017 (230+ in-house), including 52 general counsel and chief legal officer searches. No Orlando-only closed-search count is published. The clock is the firm book: a shortlist in 24 days and an accepted offer in a median of 11 weeks, range 8 to 16.

What do general counsel recruiters Orlando briefs have to name before the title?

The brief has to name the employer and the license before it names the title. Darden Restaurants lists its principal executive offices at 1000 Darden Center Drive, Orlando, Florida, in the Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended 31 May 2026. Marriott Vacations Worldwide lists 7812 Palm Parkway, Orlando, Florida, in the Form 10-K filed 2 March 2026. Hilton Grand Vacations' Form 10-K, filed 26 February 2026, lists 6355 MetroWest Boulevard, Suite 180, Orlando. Those are three employers and three benches. A restaurant-operations counsel is not a vacation-ownership counsel.

What does an Orlando in-house counsel seat pay in 2026?

The public wage for lawyers in the metro is a 2025 median of $136,970, not a general counsel package. O*NET's Florida wage table for lawyers, SOC 23-1011, puts Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford at a 10th percentile of $78,770, a 25th of $99,750, a median of $136,970, a 75th of $179,310, and a 90th of $265,810. The same table puts Florida at $133,180 and the United States at $159,670. Darden's 2026 proxy reports fiscal 2025 salary of $643,077 and a total of $3,011,426 for the former senior vice president, general counsel, chief compliance officer and corporate secretary. Hilton Grand Vacations' 2026 proxy reports 2025 salary of $622,712 and a total of $4,718,036 for its senior executive vice president, general counsel and corporate operations, and secretary. Those totals are named-executive rows. They are not the metro median.

Does an Orlando general counsel need Florida Bar admission or an authorized-house-counsel certificate?

A lawyer who will practice Florida law needs a Florida license, or certification as authorized house counsel under Chapter 17 of the Rules Regulating The Florida Bar, June 2026 compilation. Chapter 17 is for a lawyer licensed elsewhere who is exclusively employed by a business organization located in Florida. If the person is already employed in Florida, authorization starts when the clerk of the Supreme Court of Florida approves the certification. If the person is relocating, authorization starts on the employment date, and that date must fall within 6 months of the application. The Florida Bar's application checklist states a filing fee of $1,650, which is not refunded. The annual renewal fee is the same fee active members pay. The Florida Bar reported on 27 April 2026 that the active-member fee remains $265.

What notice period applies before an Orlando counsel can start?

Florida does not set a statutory resignation notice for an employee who has not signed a covered garden leave agreement. Florida Statutes section 542.44, created by chapter 2025-213, is the instrument that can require up to 4 years of advance notice. It applies only to a covered employee under a covered garden leave agreement. The Florida House statute page records that chapter 2025-213 became law without the Governor's signature on 3 July 2025, and records a constitutional effective date of 15 August 2025. After the first 90 days of that notice period, the employee does not have to keep working. The employer may shorten the period with at least 30 days' written notice. Section 448.08 provides attorney fees in an action for unpaid wages. It does not set notice.

How long does a general counsel search take, and how is it paid?

Across 52 general counsel searches since 2017, the median time to an accepted offer is 11 weeks. The shortlist on those searches arrives in 24 days. The range is 8 to 16 weeks. A NASDAQ-listed medtech in Boston hired a successor general counsel on that clock: a shortlist of four on day 24, accepted offer in week 11. The fee is retained only, 25 to 30 percent of total first-year compensation. Thirty percent of that fee is paid at engagement and kept if the client cancels. GC, CLO, and CCO searches carry a 12-month replacement term. Other in-house searches carry 6 months. Offer acceptance on corporate mandates is 96 percent. Those figures are the firm book. They are not an Orlando-only median.
