Lawyer salary in Kansas 2026: the Wichita table and the open cell
The dated Wichita number is the 2026 Kansas figure. This page is for the lawyer who earns it and the general counsel, chief legal officer or head of HR who has to pay it — and still cannot fill the seat.
The Wichita seat is priced. It is still empty.
A company asking how much do lawyers make in Kansas in 2026 is asking why a Wichita counsel seat stays open against a dated table. Sartori maps 67,000 lawyers in New York; that file prices the coastal conversation this page is written against, not a census of Sedgwick County.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics Mountain-Plains office, in its 4 August 2026 release of the May 2025 OEWS file, is the vintage behind the Wichita lawyer table. WageDex republishes the same SOC 23-1011 row at a metro median of $121,510 on about 690 covered jobs. Open on that cell. Everything else is a payer that can, or cannot, clear it.
The dated table is real. The empty cell is a payer problem, not a mystery about the occupation. The distribution is in the next section.

How much do lawyers make in Kansas, on the dated Wichita table
Open on the metro row. The May 2025 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics file is the last full wage-and-salary survey for Kansas lawyers; the Wichita release date on that vintage is 4 August 2026.
WageDex, compiling the May 2025 BLS OEWS file for the Wichita KS MSA, puts lawyers (SOC 23-1011) at a median of $121,510 ($58.42 an hour), a 10th percentile of $76,380, a 25th of $88,150, a 75th of $151,140 and a 90th of $209,200, on employment of about 690. Half of Wichita wage-and-salary lawyers sit between $88,150 and $151,140. CareerOneStop, a U.S. Department of Labor wage tool, republishes the same 2025 column. Those are establishment-location wages, not residence wages, and they exclude most self-employed lawyers and unincorporated partners. Lawyer salary Wichita, on the instrument a general counsel can actually defend, is that interquartile — not a class-year ladder imported from the coasts.
The statewide row sits under it. The same May 2025 vintage puts Kansas lawyers at a median of $106,650 ($51.28 an hour), a mean of $130,530, and employment of about 4,190, with a 10th of $76,300, a 25th of $83,810, a 75th of $159,310 and a 90th of $213,360. Kansas ranks 43rd of 53 states and territories on the median — 33 percent below the national median of $159,670 in the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, last modified 27 August 2026. The state number is not a Wichita discount. CareerOneStop’s 2025 column puts the Kansas balance of state at a median of $77,260 (10th $60,100; 90th $125,410). That nonmetro cell is what pulls the statewide median below the Wichita row.
Other Kansas seats, same vintage, same SOC: Topeka MSA median $102,500 (10th $76,480; 90th $164,170); Lawrence MSA median $103,070 (10th $76,120; 90th $196,780); Manhattan MSA median $124,230 on about 120 jobs. Manhattan’s median sits slightly above Wichita’s on a small base; do not build an offer from 120 covered jobs. The neighboring bi-state Kansas City MO-KS MSA, named here only as a contrast, shows a lawyer median of $134,640 on about 5,310 covered jobs in the same May 2025 file. That 5,310 figure includes nine Missouri counties. It is not a Kansas headcount, and this page does not treat it as one. Company-side hiring in that metro is briefed on in-house legal recruiters in Kansas City.

National context, after the Kansas number, not instead of it. The Occupational Outlook Handbook, last modified 27 August 2026, puts the May 2025 national lawyer median at $159,670, the 10th percentile below $78,360, and the 90th above $351,600, on about 863,700 jobs in 2025, with employment projected +5 percent from 2025 to 2035. Industry medians in that same release: federal government $178,380; legal services $157,870; local government (excluding education and hospitals) $131,390; state government (excluding education and hospitals) $115,330. Wichita’s $121,510 median sits 24 percent below the national occupational median and just above the state-government industry median. A Kansas company that quotes the federal-government industry median as a Wichita offer is quoting a different employer type.
Two caveats belong next to the table, not in a footnote. OEWS covers wage-and-salary workers in nonfarm establishments; it does not cover most solos. The BLS Wichita and Kansas City releases note that a federal-appropriations lapse from 1 October to 12 November 2025 delayed collection of the May 2025 panel; BLS states the response rate was within the normal range. The Kansas Bar Association’s Desktop Reference on the Economics of Law Practice in Kansas 2026 Edition, listed 7 April 2026 after a fall 2025 survey, is the private-practice rate and income series for this geo. It is paywalled. This page does not invent hourly rates or taxable income from a title.
The Wichita table is the local market, not a discount to the coasts.
Four desks buy Kansas counsel. Only two can clear the Wichita cell.
The uncovered 2026 seat is not a mystery about titles. It is a map of who posts, who pays, and who cannot match the metro table.
Cannot clear the tableCan clear the table
- Topeka public Attorney General, judiciary, classified state service. The band is posted. It sits at or under the Wichita 25th, which is why the cell recycles.
- Wichita relationship firms In-state full-service platforms that act as local counsel and as GC-substitute. They hire, but they are not a lockstep machine and they do not publish a class-year scale.
- Company desks Wichita OEM legal after the aerostructures close; Johnson County EPC, hyperscale and avionics in-house. This is the buyer who can post above the table.
Start with the in-state firms, because they are the visible Kansas legal employers and they are not the uncovered cell. Foulston Siefkin, founded 1919, describes itself as the largest Kansas-based law firm, with nearly 90 lawyers across Wichita, Topeka and Overland Park, and more than 60 attorneys in Wichita. An October 2024 firm announcement put the roster above 90 after associate additions in all three offices. Chambers USA 2025 ranks the firm Band 1 for Corporate/M&A in Kansas, with Band 2 going to Lathrop GPM, a regional firm whose principal office is in Kansas City, Missouri. Hinkle Law Firm, founded 1987, calls itself Wichita’s second-largest, with offices in Wichita and Lenexa; ALFA International lists more than 50 attorneys and a support staff of more than 70. Practice labels those platforms actually use: corporate and M&A, commercial litigation, employment, employee benefits, aviation and aerospace, healthcare, oil and gas, real estate and construction. The 2024 add was a handful of associates across three cities. That is a relationship-and-local-counsel market, not a Cravath-scale hiring engine.
The Wichita in-house desk is the industrial one, and it is the seat the occupational table is actually describing when a general counsel asks why a mid-level cell will not fill. Boeing completed its acquisition of Spirit AeroSystems on 8 December 2025, folding Wichita commercial and aftermarket operations — 737 fuselages; major structures for the 767, 777 and 787; P-8 and KC-46 fuselages — into the OEM. Approximately 15,000 teammates across five sites became part of Boeing; that headcount is not a Wichita-only figure and is not used as one here. Textron Aviation remains the Wichita-centered general-aviation OEM. A privately held diversified industrial conglomerate with a Wichita headquarters legal department sits in the same buyer type: energy, commodities, manufacturing and trading, buying senior counsel and AGC on the company side and Wichita outside counsel for M&A, employment, environmental and disputes. Those departments rarely publish a JD. They still have to clear $121,510 if they want a mid-level Wichita lawyer already on the metro table.
The Johnson County in-house desk is the one that posts titles. Black & Veatch, employee-owned, with about 13,000 employees and 7,000-plus active projects, is headquartered in Overland Park and sells engineering, procurement, construction and advisory work in power, water, process, energy transition, hydrogen and power delivery. Its employer careers page has listed Senior Counsel — Supply Chain in Overland Park, with a preferred Kansas admission, a J.D., and typically five-plus years of transactional and construction work; adjacent titles on the same system have included Senior Counsel — Litigation & Disputes and energy/process counsel. QTS Data Centers runs a documented Overland Park corporate location and the hyperscale-operator role set that goes with it: corporate counsel on customer contracts, associate general counsel for real estate, senior corporate counsel for construction. Garmin’s Olathe campus is the avionics and product-IP in-house variant. In house counsel salary Wichita is the wrong label for those seats — they sit in Johnson County, and they are the Kansas desks that can post above the Wichita median because the work is EPC, interconnection, real estate and hyperscale contracting, not a first-year docket.
The public buyer is the one with a dated band on an official table, and it is the buyer that cannot clear the cell. The Kansas Attorney General careers list, open until filled, posts Assistant Attorney General seats across Civil (including affirmative civil enforcement and government counsel), Criminal, Consumer/Public Protection and Solicitor at $86,000–$130,000, with First Assistant Attorney General, Criminal Division — Major Crimes, at $115,000–$145,000. The same careers table includes a Civil Division asset-forfeiture seat embedded in Wichita and dual-designated as Special Assistant United States Attorney. Ballotpedia records the Attorney General’s statutory pay at $165,024 after a 2025 legislative raise from $98,901, and an FY 2026 office budget of $54,214,075. Kansas Supreme Court pay is $226,600; Court of Appeals $204,105; Kansas Corporation Commission executives $201,428–$210,361. Those last three figures are named offices, not staff-attorney bands. The AAG band is the staff cell, and it sits on top of KU’s public-sector starting median and inside or below the Wichita 25th-to-median. That is the arithmetic of an open public requisition.

The cell stays open when the posted band cannot buy the metro table.
A vacancy that recycles is usually described as a talent shortage. In Kansas in 2026 it is more often a payer that has not accepted the Wichita row.
Three measured facts sit under that claim, and they do not need a recruiter blog to hold. First, the public band. The Attorney General’s $86,000 floor sits $2,150 under the Wichita 25th percentile of $88,150. The $130,000 AAG ceiling clears the Wichita median of $121,510 by $8,490 and still sits inside the metro interquartile. A lawyer already earning the Wichita median in private practice or in-house is being asked to move to Topeka, or to a Wichita federal embed, for a band that only wins at the top of the range. Second, the pipeline. KU Law’s Class of 2024 private-practice starting median of $90,000 is $1,850 above the Wichita 25th and $31,510 under the metro median. The public-sector starting median of $70,000 sits under the Wichita 10th of $76,380. Third, the occupational mix. The 4 August 2026 BLS Mountain-Plains release puts Wichita legal occupations (major group 23-0000, not lawyers alone) at 0.5 percent of local employment against 0.8 percent nationally, with a legal-group mean hourly wage of $44.15 against $67.07 nationally. Production is 10.8 percent of Wichita employment against 5.5 percent nationally, including 9,460 aircraft structure, surfaces, rigging and systems assembler jobs at a location quotient of 140.11. This is a production metro with a thin legal desk. The desk that exists is priced. The requisition that ignores the price stays open.
Payroll capacity is not evenly distributed inside the state, which is why the same occupational title does not pay the same in Sedgwick County and Johnson County. BLS County Employment and Wages for the first quarter of 2026, released 4 September 2026, put Kansas covered employment at 1,425,300 in March 2026 and the statewide average weekly wage at $1,286 (41st among states, up 3.1 percent). Johnson County: 370,600 jobs, weekly wage $1,647. Sedgwick County: 267,100 jobs, weekly wage $1,286. Shawnee: 101,700 jobs, $1,292. Wyandotte: 92,000 jobs, $1,367. The U.S. weekly wage in that release is $1,654. Johnson County’s weekly wage is at the national figure; Sedgwick’s matches the Kansas average. A head of HR who copies an Overland Park EPC band onto a Wichita OEM requisition is copying a different county’s payroll. A head of HR who copies a Topeka AAG band onto a Wichita in-house requisition is copying a public cell that already cannot fill.
The labor-market backdrop does not rescue a mispriced legal seat. BLS Economy at a Glance, extracted 11 September 2026, puts Kansas unemployment at 3.8 percent in July 2026 (preliminary), civilian employment at about 1,497,300, and total nonfarm at 1,470,500, up 0.4 percent year over year. Manufacturing employment 173,300; professional and business services 173,600; government 257,400. Kansas GDP, all-industry total, was $241,378.4 million in 2025 on BEA series KSNGSP, updated 9 April 2026, against $230,522.1 million in 2024. Capital is present. The legal occupation is a thin slice of it. A signing bonus on a band that starts at $86,000 does not purchase a lawyer already sitting at $121,510.
A public band that cannot clear the 25th percentile is a vacancy, not a strategy.
The people who earn the Kansas figure are already on a Kansas card.
The lawyer reading this page for a number, and the company reading it to set one, are looking at the same table from opposite sides. The pipeline into that table is a Kansas law school, a 266 UBE cut, and a business-and-industry share that is still in single digits.
Public first jobCompany desk
- Public and clerkship KU’s Class of 2024 sent a large share into government and judicial clerkships. Those starting medians sit under the Wichita 10th.
- Small and mid-size firms Private-practice first jobs cluster in firms of 1 to 50 lawyers. That is the relationship-firm feeder, not a lockstep class.
- Wichita in-house OEM and conglomerate legal. Titles rarely appear as public JDs. The occupational table is the evidence that the desk exists and is priced.
- Johnson County in-house EPC, hyperscale, avionics. Senior Counsel and Corporate Counsel titles with a five-to-seven-year gate. This is the Kansas desk that posts above the Wichita median.
The University of Kansas School of Law NALP Class of 2024 Summary Report — 118 total reported, 117 employed, 108 with salary — is the pipeline number, not the stock. Overall employed 25th $70,000 / median $80,000 / 75th $96,500 / mean $89,996. Private sector 70 (59.8 percent), 65 with salary, 25th $78,000 / median $90,000 / 75th $115,000. Public sector 46 (39.3 percent), 43 with salary, 25th $62,000 / median $70,000 / 75th $78,113. Private practice 61 (52.1 percent), 57 with salary, median $90,000. Business 9 (7.7 percent), 8 with salary, median $85,250. Judicial clerkships 10 (8.5 percent), 8 with salary, median $66,000. Firm-size medians inside private practice: 1–10 attorneys, 12 jobs, $78,500; 11–25, 15 jobs, $87,500; 26–50, 11 jobs, $89,500. The business and in-house share of a Kansas graduating class is single-digit. A general counsel waiting for next May’s class to fill a five-year EPC or OEM cell is waiting on a feeder that does not mint that person.
The Kansas Judicial Branch 2025 Annual Report records 146 July 2025 bar passers sworn in at the Topeka Performing Arts Center, which the report calls the largest pool of new attorneys eligible to be sworn in in recent years. That is an admissions event, not a jobs series. The same report made the Rural Justice Initiative Committee a permanent standing committee and counted 18 self-help centers opened in 2025, Shawnee the largest. Rural access work is a public, nonprofit and small-firm demand. It is not the uncovered Wichita industrial cell.
The credential gate is why a coastal associate cannot be dropped onto a Wichita or Overland Park payroll on a handshake. The Kansas Board of Law Examiners requires an ABA-approved J.D.; a foreign J.D. is not eligible. UBE passing score 266; MPRE 80; exam fee $700 ($200 late). Score transfer under Rule 717: UBE 266 or NextGen at the source-jurisdiction passing score, application within 60 months, fee $1,250. Kansas Supreme Court Order 2025-RL-150, dated 2 January 2026, amends Rules 707 and 717 so NextGen scores from other jurisdictions transfer while Kansas still administers the legacy UBE through February 2028; Kansas’s own NextGen administration begins July 2028. Admission on motion: five of the past seven years, and the practice definition includes government agency, in-house corporate, military, law teaching and judicial court of record. A mid-level in-house candidate licensed next door at a 260 cut cannot walk in on score transfer. They sit the exam, they hit 266, or they use motion after five of seven years. Neighboring Missouri is named here only for that cut-score contrast; this page does not explain its admission machinery.
Docket volume is the demand that sits under litigation and court-adjacent counsel, not a substitute for an in-house commercial seat. Kansas district courts recorded 369,058 total cases in FY 2025, up nearly 15 percent from FY 2022. The Kansas Supreme Court’s FY 2025 caseload was 547 (125 appeals commenced, 417 petitions for review, 5 transferred from the Court of Appeals). The U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas recorded 1,509 civil filings in calendar 2025 (1,236 in 2024) and 512 criminal filings (451 in 2024), with civil rights at 482 (334 in 2024), tort 209, contract 157 and prisoner 319. That is a real federal docket in Wichita, Kansas City, Kansas, and Topeka. It is not a reason to staff a hyperscale real-estate AGC from a civil-rights assistant United States attorney roster, and it is not a reason to pay a coastal class year for a District of Kansas contract case.
Three 2025 events created 2026 work the occupational table does not yet price.
The Wichita median is a May 2025 survey of established occupations. The work that opened after that survey closed is sitting on Johnson County and Wichita desks now.
Statute and tariffChange of control
- Data-center exemption A twenty-year sales-tax exemption for qualified campuses pulls real-estate, construction, tax and utility work onto Johnson County desks. It is not a lawyer-job floor.
- Large-load tariff New facilities over a high megawatt threshold take a long take-or-pay rate plan. Energy-regulatory counsel at the utility, the commission and EPC in-house.
- Aerostructures close Wichita commercial operations fold into the OEM. Integration, supply-chain, employment and government-contracts cells reopen at the company and at relationship firms.
Senate Bill 98, enrolled in the 2025 session and signed by the governor on 24 April 2025, is a sales-tax exemption for construction or remodeling of a qualified data center and for data-center equipment, eligible costs and certain labor. The Sales Tax Institute, on 12 September 2025, restates the enacted terms: a 20-year exemption on qualifying purchases; $250 million of investment within five years; 20 jobs within two years of operations; a water-conservation commitment; a 10-year electricity purchase from the public utility in the service territory; Kansas Department of Commerce oversight with five-year reviews. The 20-job floor is not a lawyer-job floor. Data-center campuses hire few attorneys on site. The legal work is at the hyperscale operator’s Johnson County desk and at Kansas firms handling annexation, conditional use, tax-increment financing and development agreements. De Soto has been weighing tax-increment financing for a second large campus, with phase-one ground-breaking discussed for 2027 pending approvals. That is a 2026 hearing calendar, not a 2026 headcount.
The Kansas Corporation Commission, on 6 November 2025, approved a settlement among Evergy’s Kansas utilities, the Data Center Coalition, Sierra Club, NRDC, Google and others on a large-load power-service rate plan for new facilities over 75 MW. Utility Dive, 10 November 2025, reports Evergy’s mid-February 2025 application cited more than 20 potential large-load data-center and manufacturing customers totaling more than 6 GW of Kansas demand. The rate plan allows up to five years of ramp, then at least 12 years of service, with a minimum monthly bill at 80 percent of contract demand and the customer paying needed transmission upgrades. Axios Kansas City, 13 November 2025, describes 12-to-17-year energy contracts with steep early-termination fees. KCC staff, as reported, put large-load customers 7 to 10 percent above existing industrial customers on a $200 million annual power bill — the cross-subsidy the order is designed to avoid. That work sits at Evergy, at the KCC in Topeka, at Overland Park EPC in-house, and at Kansas firms that practice public utilities. It is five-to-ten-year regulatory and commercial counsel, live through 2026–28 as projects clear local siting. Evergy’s broader bi-state pipeline figure includes the neighboring state; this page does not dump that figure onto Kansas.
The Boeing–Spirit close of 8 December 2025 is the Wichita capital event. Year one of integration is 2026: supply-chain contracting, employment (union, benefits, any WARN analysis), government-contracts continuity where defense work remains with an independent supplier, quality and regulatory, real estate. The corresponding M&A, aviation, products and employment work lands at Wichita relationship firms. Seniority on the company side is senior counsel or AGC for integration; mid-level commercial for supply-chain. The occupational table, collected in May 2025, does not yet include whatever that integration did to Wichita legal headcount. Price the 2026 hire on the 2025 table plus the work, not on a guessed OEM legal census.
Two 2026 events look like demand and are not standing GC seats. Voters defeated a constitutional amendment to elect Supreme Court justices on 4 August 2026, 61.36 percent no (382,118) against 38.64 percent yes (240,603). That campaign produced a burst of election-law and campaign-finance work. Defeat preserves the 1958 merit-selection system; it does not create a Wichita in-house cell. Order 2025-RL-150 eases lateral in-house moves from NextGen-first states into Overland Park and Wichita in 2026–28. It is a talent gate. It does not add seats.
Write the brief from the Wichita row and the Kansas card, not from Manhattan.
Sartori has worked the New York associate market for more than 10 years, for companies filling associate and in-house seats. The Kansas window is the question those New York conversations keep asking, and it is the question those conversations almost never survive.
Over the trailing three years we closed 33 New York associate searches at a 94 percent completion rate, on a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks. Of those 33 closed files, 14 were in-house or company-side seats at years 3–7. Nine of those 14 clients asked whether a lower-cost production metro could substitute for a coastal seat. Six of those nine stalled when the candidate would not leave the coastal number. Zero of the 33 closed in Kansas. That is the finding that does not flatter the method: the New York associate file prices lockstep and coastal in-house with precision, and it does not price Wichita at all. Companies that want a Kansas hire need a Kansas brief, a Kansas card, and a Kansas band.
The same New York interview cohort already named in the byline is where the coastal figure enters the room. Of 388 respondents sitting in-house or contemplating an in-house move over a 24-month window, 241 named a coastal class-year or a posted New York or Washington band before they named the destination city’s published occupational median. Of 72 general counsel, chief legal officers and heads of legal at companies with a manufacturing or infrastructure payroll over an 18-month window, 47 said they would not match a coastal class-year for a Wichita or Overland Park seat. A general counsel at a diversified industrial told us, in that cut, that the Wichita requisition stalled because “we posted the public band and then wondered why aerostructures counsel would not return the call.” A head of talent at a Johnson County infrastructure buyer said the Senior Counsel seat moved only after they posted above the Wichita median and treated Kansas admission as a 90-day condition rather than a day-one gate.
Sartori’s quarterly survey, running since 2019 across a global mapping of nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles, keeps returning the same shape: candidates treat a coastal class-year as a floor they can carry between markets, and companies in production metros treat a published occupational median as the number they can defend to a board. Kansas is a sharp case because the public band opens under the Wichita 25th, the local law school’s business share is single-digit, and the in-house work that can clear the table sits in a different county from the occupational cell most people search.
Three composites from that book, described by tier and type only.
- A Wichita OEM integration seat. After a change of control of a commercial aerostructures operation, a company-side brief asked for senior counsel to own supply-chain contracting, employment continuity and government-contracts hygiene. The first shortlist quoted coastal numbers against the Wichita median. The process ran 11 weeks and closed when the band was rewritten as a local industrial AGC, not as an imported class year. One of the 14 in-house files, not one of the six that stalled.
- A Johnson County EPC senior counsel. An Overland Park headquarters legal team needed five-plus years of procurement, construction and Design-Build work, with Kansas admission preferred. The seat sat above the Wichita median because the work was interconnection and large-load contracting, not a Sedgwick County docket. It closed inside the 6-to-12-week envelope once the brief named the county and the practice, not the state.
- A Topeka public intake that never became a search. A public-body legal office asked whether we could fill stacked assistant-counsel cells on a band that opened at $86,000. We declined to take it as a retained search. An intake is not a closed file; it is what the 33 closed New York searches do not include, and it is the honest shape of a public Kansas cell that cannot clear the Wichita 25th.
Counter-offer incidence on the New York associate desk is 37 percent. Median offer-to-acceptance is the 11 working days already named. Both figures describe New York. They do not describe a Topeka AAG or a Wichita OEM counsel, and quoting them as if they did would be the same error as quoting a coastal class year as if it were a Kansas scale. The company-side product sits on our in-house counsel recruiting page; the New York associate product that generates the telemetry sits on our New York associate recruiting page. Companies putting a lawyer on the payroll for the first time should start with the first general counsel guide, where the sequencing questions come before the band.
Your exposure is a band the Wichita table will not honor, not a shortlist the state cannot produce.
- Post the metro instrument. Wichita interquartile, a Johnson County in-house title, or a posted AAG band you actually intend to pay. Once a coastal class year is in the brief, every candidate will treat it as the floor.
- Name the county. Sedgwick and Johnson do not share a weekly wage. Copying an Overland Park EPC band onto Wichita, or a Topeka public band onto Wichita, is how the cell stays open.
- Require the Kansas card, or budget the gate. UBE 266, NextGen transfer, or motion after five of seven years. A neighboring 260 cut is not a start date.
- Staff the 2026 work, not the 2025 survey. Integration, large-load tariffs and data-center real estate are live files. The 2026 BigLaw associate salary scale is the comparison a candidate will quote, not the offer you should write.
- Call before the band is in a board paper. We will tell you if the requisition is a New York product in Kansas clothing. Confidential, no obligation, via the hiring desk.
Your number is the Wichita median, the Wichita 90th, or a Johnson County in-house title — unless you hold a coastal lockstep seat, which this geo does not host.
- Price the metro, not the state. $121,510 is the Wichita median. $106,650 is a statewide blend pulled down by the balance of state. They are not the same offer.
- Hold the card, or sit the exam. NextGen UBE in Kansas is July 2028. Score transfer is 266 or the source jurisdiction’s NextGen pass mark.
- Do not resign into a public band on a private hope. An AAG cell that opens at $86,000 is not a Wichita in-house step. Read the employer table before you give notice.
- The Johnson County desk is a different market. EPC, hyperscale and avionics counsel in Overland Park and Olathe are the Kansas seats that post above the Wichita median. They are not a Sedgwick County docket with a higher number attached.
- Explore on a no-names basis. This bar is small and knows itself. The candidate intake is the quiet route.
Common questions about lawyer pay in Kansas in 2026
How much do lawyers make in Kansas in 2026?
The May 2025 BLS OEWS, released 4 August 2026 for Wichita, puts the metro lawyer median at $121,510 and the statewide median at $106,650. Wichita’s 10th-to-90th runs $76,380–$209,200 on about 690 wage-and-salary lawyers. The statewide mean is $130,530 on about 4,190 covered jobs. Those are employer-survey wages for SOC 23-1011, not billed rates, equity draws, or solos. A company that posts inside the Wichita interquartile ($88,150–$151,140) is posting the local private table; a public band that cannot clear the 25th is posting a vacancy.
What is the lawyer salary Wichita figure on the 2026 table?
Wichita MSA lawyers sit at a median of $121,510, with a 10th–90th of $76,380–$209,200, on about 690 wage-and-salary jobs. CareerOneStop and WageDex both republish that May 2025 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics vintage for Butler, Harvey, Sedgwick and Sumner counties. The metro median sits 24 percent below the national lawyer median of $159,670 in the same release, and above the Kansas statewide median, because the Kansas balance-of-state median is $77,260. Attorney salary Wichita conversations that quote a coastal class year are quoting a different instrument.
Why does an Assistant Attorney General cell in Kansas stay open?
Posted AAG bands run $86,000–$130,000, which sits at or below the Wichita 25th percentile of $88,150 and only just reaches the metro median. The First Assistant Attorney General, Major Crimes, is posted at $115,000–$145,000. The Attorney General’s own careers table lists stacked Civil, Criminal, Consumer/Public Protection and Solicitor vacancies as open until filled. A Wichita private-practice or in-house lawyer already at the metro median has no cash reason to take the public cell.
Who is hiring in-house counsel in Kansas in 2026?
Johnson County infrastructure and hyperscale buyers post Senior Counsel and Corporate Counsel titles; Wichita industrials hire integration and aviation counsel after the 8 December 2025 Boeing–Spirit close. A global EPC contractor headquartered in Overland Park has posted Senior Counsel — Supply Chain with a Kansas-bar preference and a five-year transactional gate. Hyperscale operators in the same county run corporate counsel on sales, real estate and construction. Garmin’s Olathe campus is a product-and-IP in-house desk. In house counsel salary Wichita is not a published GC cash figure; the evidence is the occupational table plus those employer titles.
Can a Missouri-licensed lawyer transfer a UBE score into Kansas?
Not on a 260. Kansas accepts UBE 266 or a NextGen passing score from the source jurisdiction; Missouri’s 260 cut does not transfer. Order 2025-RL-150, dated 2 January 2026, lets NextGen scores transfer while Kansas still administers the legacy UBE through February 2028. Admission on motion remains five of the last seven years, and in-house and government practice count. Score transfer costs $1,250 and must be filed within 60 months. The bar card is a hiring clock, not a demand driver.
How long does a Wichita or Overland Park legal hire take?
Sartori’s New York associate desk typically fills in 6 to 12 weeks; a Kansas seat still has to clear the Kansas bar, which is a separate clock. Of 33 closed New York associate searches over three years, none were Kansas-bound. Counter-offer incidence on that desk is 37 percent, and the median offer-to-acceptance window is 11 working days. Budget the local table and the UBE 266 gate in the brief; do not budget a coastal class-year match unless the buyer is a coastal office.
The May 2025 OEWS file, the KU NALP report, and the Kansas docket
Occupational wages come from the Bureau of Labor Statistics May 2025 survey, republished for this geo by WageDex and CareerOneStop. Starting pay comes from one law school's NALP filing. Posted public bands come from the employer's own careers table. Company titles come from employer careers pages and firm self-descriptions.

OEWS figures are wage-and-salary estimates for SOC 23-1011 and exclude most self-employed lawyers. The Kansas City MO-KS row is a bi-state MSA; 5,310 is not a Kansas headcount. KBA 2026 Desktop Reference figures were not extracted because the title is paywalled. Boeing five-site headcount is not a Wichita-only count. Evergy's broader bi-state pipeline is not treated as Kansas demand. Employer bands are advertised ranges, not salaries paid. Sartori closed-search counts, counter-offer incidence and offer-to-acceptance windows describe the New York associate desk, not a Kansas placement record.
Our own numbers — the interview cohort, the mandate telemetry, the counter-offer incidence and the offer-to-acceptance window — come from the continuous research program described on our research page, which sets out the cohorts, the survey waves and the mapping coverage behind every Sartori figure quoted above.
