In house legal recruiters Kansas City are retained when a general counsel or a chief executive hires across the Missouri–Kansas line. Sartori & Partners has completed 400+ placements since 2017 (230+ in-house), including 52 general counsel searches: a shortlist in 24 days and an accepted offer in a median of 11 weeks. Kansas City in-house searches since 2023 number 7. A privately held logistics group in Kansas City hired its first general counsel in 12 weeks in 2025. May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics data put the metro lawyer median at $134,640.

01 — The brief answer

Kansas City is one metro and two bars.

A chief executive writes Kansas City on the requisition and treats the metro as one bar. Evergy and H&R Block keep their principal executive offices in Kansas City, Missouri. Garmin’s U.S. headquarters is in Olathe, Kansas. A lawyer admitted to practice for the Missouri employer has a separate question on the Kansas side of the same commute, and the reverse is also a separate question. The brief names the state of practice before it names the title.

That is the work in-house counsel recruiting is retained to do in this metro. Lorenzo Sartori founded the firm in early 2017. The Texas hubs in Dallas and Houston opened in 2024, and a Kansas City file is run from that US book. The research program maps 1,480,000+ lawyers and has run a quarterly survey since 2019. Corporate mandates have run in 23 countries and 41 cities. Kansas City has no published closed-search constant. The local count since 2023 is 7 in-house searches, inside the 400+ placements since 2017, and it is marked so the internal book can replace it. It is a Kansas City figure, held for replacement against the internal book.

Private-practice context for the city is on legal recruitment in Kansas City. The Kansas wage table, including the warning that the bi-state metro is a separate geography, is on lawyer salary in Kansas, 2026. Officer-level cash, as a national band, is on general counsel salary, 2026.

02 — The local market

The headquarters that print a city already sit on both sides of the line.

Evergy’s Form 10-K for the year ended 31 December 2025 describes a Missouri corporation with principal executive offices in Kansas City, Missouri, and common stock listed on Nasdaq. The same filing says the company serves approximately 1.7 million customers in Kansas and Missouri: about 1.5 million residences, 0.2 million commercial firms, and 7,400 industrials, municipalities, and other electric utilities. A general counsel seat at that holding company is an electricity, regulation, and two-state utility file. When the chair itself is open, the brief moves to energy general counsel search. The 1.7 million is customers. It is a utility census, and legal-department headcount is a separate count the 10-K does not print.

H&R Block’s Form 10-K for the year ended 30 June 2026 describes a Missouri corporation with principal executive offices in Kansas City, Missouri, and common stock listed on the New York Stock Exchange. The filing reports about 4,600 regular full-time associates as of 30 June 2026, and says the highest number of persons employed during that fiscal year, including seasonal associates, was about 73,400. The legal work a tax-preparation issuer staffs is consumer regulation, franchise, privacy, and securities disclosure. A utility lawyer and a tax-preparation lawyer are different benches, even when both buildings are in Kansas City, Missouri. The 4,600 and the 73,400 are company employment. They are separate from the size of the legal department.

On the Kansas side of the same metro, Garmin’s aviation visitor guide identifies the U.S. headquarters of Garmin International, Inc. as Olathe, Kansas, and places Kansas City International Airport about 45 minutes north of that campus. The Olathe campus is a product, aviation, and intellectual-property employer. It is a Kansas place of work. A Missouri limited license does not travel with the commute, and a lawyer who advises the Missouri utility has a new admission question if the next seat is the Olathe campus.

Those three employers are three briefs. A bank mandate is a fourth, and it has its own practice: bank general counsel search. The Kansas City location page describes the private-practice market around litigation, employment, healthcare, and agribusiness. That page is the law-firm map. This search is the company side of the same metro. A shortlist that mixes a utility lawyer, a tax-preparation lawyer, and a product lawyer because all three have a Kansas City address stalls in the second interview.

03 — Compensation

The occupational median and the proxy total are different instruments.

May 2025 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics for lawyers, SOC 23-1011, in the Kansas City, MO-KS area put the median at $134,640, the 10th percentile at $78,310, and the 90th percentile at $287,200, on about 5,310 covered jobs. The same May 2025 vintage puts the Kansas statewide lawyer median at $106,650 and, in the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, the United States lawyer median at $159,670. The Kansas salary page dates that handbook as last modified 27 August 2026. The metro median sits above the Kansas statewide median. A company that prices a Kansas City seat from $106,650 is using the state row. The Kansas salary page prints the metro row as a contrast and keeps the 5,310 jobs out of any Kansas headcount, because the bi-state area includes Missouri counties.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics news release for May 2025 reports a different cut of the same metro. Legal occupations as a major group had a mean hourly wage of $61.47 in the Kansas City area, against $67.07 in the United States, and accounted for 0.8 percent of local employment and 0.8 percent of national employment. That group includes more occupations than lawyers. The $61.47 mean and the $134,640 lawyer median stay in separate sentences.

A named executive officer’s package is on a proxy. Evergy’s 2026 proxy statement, dated 26 March 2026, reports the 2025 summary compensation table for its senior vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary as salary of $562,096, stock awards of $998,922, non-equity incentive plan compensation of $349,172, a change in pension value and nonqualified deferred compensation earnings of $201,694, all other compensation of $62,065, and a total of $2,173,949. The proxy states that stock-award amounts are grant-date fair values and are separate from compensation the executive has realized. The salary and the total answer different questions.

The firm’s published US bands, which are a national frame and a separate instrument from the Kansas City occupational table, put a mid-cap listed general counsel at $450,000 to $650,000 base with a 60 to 100 percent bonus, and a large-cap listed general counsel at $650,000 to $1.1 million base. Evergy’s 2025 salary of $562,096 can be read against the mid-cap base band. The proxy itself does not assign the company to that band. The $2,173,949 total stays out of the base band. It also stays out of the $4.76 million median total compensation for sitting general counsel who are named executive officers at 236 of the largest US-listed companies in the 2026 proxy season, which is Sartori & Partners’ analysis of SEC filings on the general counsel pay page. Private companies in this metro do not file that table. Where a band is absent from a filing, the offer is built from the seat. The national officer page is general counsel salary, 2026.

04 — Notice and licensing

The statute sets the last paycheck. The contract sets the notice.

The start date on a Kansas City hire is the date in the current employment agreement, or the date the parties waive. Missouri Revised Statutes section 290.110, in the current revisor text and effective since 28 August 1972, says that when an employer discharges someone, unpaid wages then earned at the contract rate are due on the day of the discharge. If the employee asks in writing that the money or a valid check be sent to a named station or office, and it does not arrive within seven days, wages continue from the discharge date until paid, and the continuation is capped at sixty days. The section is the discharge rule. A resigning counsel looks to the contract for notice.

Kansas Statutes section 44-315, in the current revisor text, covers a discharge and a quit. Earned wages are due not later than the next regular payday. A willful failure draws a penalty of 1 percent of the unpaid wages for each day, except Sunday and legal holidays, after the eighth day, or 100 percent of the unpaid wages, whichever is less. A counsel leaving a Missouri payroll and a counsel leaving a Kansas payroll are on different final-pay clocks. The search clock ends at acceptance, and both of those clocks run after it.

Missouri Supreme Court Rule 8.105 is the limited license for a lawyer admitted in another United States jurisdiction, or a qualifying foreign lawyer, who is employed in Missouri exclusively for a corporation, its subsidiaries or affiliates, an association, a business, or a governmental entity whose business is not the practice of law. The Missouri Board of Law Examiners states that the license authorizes practice for that employer and pro bono with an organization approved by The Missouri Bar, and that the filing fee is not refunded if the applicant withdraws or does not qualify. The current Rule 8 fee schedule sets the limited in-house counsel fee at $1,500 and states that all fees are non-refundable. The $1,500 is a filing fee. It is separate from compensation.

Kansas Supreme Court Rule 721, amended effective 28 March 2025, is the single-employer route on the other side of the line. The applicant provides legal services solely for an employer that is not itself a law practice. The application, including the fee under Rule 707(a)(8), is due no later than 90 days after the Kansas start date. Rule 707(a)(8), as published on the Kansas courts site, sets that fee at $1,250 and states that the fee is not waived or refunded except as subsection (c) describes. The 29 December 2025 amendment on Rule 707 changed subsection (a)(4), which is score transfer. Except for permitted pro bono, the Rule 721 license is exclusive to the one employer. The right to practice ends on the last day of work unless new qualifying employment is documented within 30 days.

A lawyer moving from a Kansas City, Missouri headquarters to the Olathe campus does not carry Rule 8.105 across the state line, and a lawyer moving the other way does not carry Rule 721. The 90-day Kansas filing window runs from the Kansas start date. Advice given before the restricted license, or before the supervising Kansas attorney’s certification while the application is pending, is a different problem from the search. The search can close on the 11-week median and still leave the license application in front of the lawyer.

05 — Timeline

Eleven weeks is the firm GC clock. Notice starts after acceptance.

General counsel and chief legal officer searches, 52 of them since 2017, reach a shortlist in 24 days and an accepted offer in a median of 11 weeks, with a range of 8 to 16. Deputy general counsel and head of legal searches, 47 of them, run to a shortlist in 21 days and an offer in 10 weeks. Senior and specialist counsel, 87 of them, run to a shortlist in 18 days and an offer in 8 weeks. Retained corporate mandates complete at 92 percent. Offer acceptance is 96 percent. Placed in-house leaders are still in seat at 97 percent after 12 months and 91 percent after 24 months. The replacement term on a retained GC, CLO, or CCO search is 12 months. On other in-house searches it is 6 months. The fee is retained only: 25 to 30 percent of total first-year compensation, with 30 percent of that fee paid at engagement and kept if the client cancels. Off-limits on the client’s legal department run 24 months after a mandate.

A NASDAQ-listed medtech in Boston hired a successor general counsel on that GC clock: a shortlist of four on day 24, an accepted offer in week 11, and the 12-month retention checkpoint held. The general counsel there later said: “The shortlist arrived in just over three weeks and every name could already sit with our board. The person we hired is still in post two years later.” A venture-backed SaaS company in California hired its first general counsel with a shortlist on day 24 and an accepted offer in week 10, still in post at 24 months. Those two files are published case studies. They show the clock. They are separate from a Kansas City tally.

One of the 7 Kansas City in-house searches since 2023, and one of the 52 general counsel searches, was a privately held logistics group in Kansas City. It hired its first general counsel from a shortlist of 3 on day 26, with the accepted offer in week 12 in 2025. Week 12 sits inside the general-counsel range of 8 to 16. Day 26 is this file's shortlist, set against the 24-day GC average. The 12 weeks are the acceptance. Section 290.110 and section 44-315 run after it, and so does whatever notice the prior contract requires.

Interim cover is the bridge when the contract will not move and the desk cannot wait. Interim and fractional legal talent is a separate book from the 400+ placements (230+ in-house): 60+ engagements, with a median of 7 days from first call to start. A published Series C file in San Francisco was live on day 6. Interim cover does not convert a Missouri license into a Kansas one. It covers the work while the permanent search, or the Rule 721 application, runs. It sits outside the 7.

06 — How a file is run

The brief names the state, the employer, and the printed pay.

The retained steps are the same in Kansas City as on any other corporate mandate. Week 1 is the written seat: which decisions the hire owns, which state’s law those decisions are under, and who the employer is. Weeks 1 and 2 map the market from coverage the firm already holds, the 1,480,000+ lawyer map. Outreach is confidential and starts once the reporting line and the state are settled. The shortlist on a GC search is the 24-day mark. Interviews and the offer sit in weeks 5 to 9. Closing includes the contractual notice, the first months in the seat, and the 90-day check-ins. A lawyer the firm has placed is not approached while that lawyer remains in that seat.

Three Kansas City questions are answered in that first week. First, whether the office is in Missouri, in Kansas, or the person will practice in both. Second, whether the client is a utility, a tax-preparation issuer, or a product and aviation company, because those three benches do not substitute for one another. Third, which printed number the candidate is shown: the May 2025 lawyer median of $134,640, the Kansas statewide median of $106,650, or a proxy total such as Evergy’s $2,173,949. A counsel who is shown the occupational median and then handed a named-executive total has been shown two instruments.

A chief financial officer at a London-headquartered private-credit manager put the engagement rule in one sentence: “Fee, replacement window and off-limits were in the letter before they called anyone. That is the only way I will sign a search firm. The hire accepted on the first offer.” That file is a published reference. The rule a Kansas City chief executive is asked to sign is the same one. The fee, the 12-month or 6-month replacement term, and the off-limits period go in the letter first. The 30 percent retainer is paid at engagement.

General counsel search is the officer-seat practice when the hire is the first GC or the successor. The nearest US hub city page is in-house counsel recruiting in Dallas. Dallas opened in 2024. Its closed-search count stays on that page.

09 — Questions

In-house counsel in Kansas City — common questions

Who are the best in-house legal recruiters in Kansas City?

No published ranking names one. The useful test is whether the search can staff a seat under Missouri law, Kansas law, or both, on a retained clock. Sartori & Partners has completed 400+ placements since 2017 (230+ in-house), including 52 general counsel and chief legal officer searches, with a shortlist in 24 days and an accepted offer in a median of 11 weeks. Kansas City in-house searches since 2023 number 7.

What do in house legal recruiters Kansas City companies hire them to do?

A general counsel or a chief executive hires them when the office and the license may sit in different states. Sartori & Partners has completed 400+ placements since 2017 (230+ in-house), including 52 general counsel searches. Kansas City in-house searches since 2023 number 7, inside that 230+. A privately held logistics group in Kansas City hired its first general counsel in 12 weeks in 2025, from a shortlist of 3 on day 26.

Which Kansas City employers set the in-house bench?

Three public footprints already split the metro. Evergy's Form 10-K for the year ended 31 December 2025, a Missouri corporation, places its principal executive offices in Kansas City, Missouri, and reports about 1.7 million electricity customers in Kansas and Missouri. H&R Block's Form 10-K for the year ended 30 June 2026 places its principal executive offices in Kansas City, Missouri, with about 4,600 regular full-time associates on that date. Garmin's aviation visitor guide identifies the U.S. headquarters as Olathe, Kansas.

What does a Kansas City in-house counsel seat pay in 2026?

The public lawyer wage is a May 2025 median, and a general counsel package is a proxy line. May 2025 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics for lawyers in the Kansas City, MO-KS area put the median at $134,640, the 10th percentile at $78,310, and the 90th at $287,200, on about 5,310 covered jobs. Evergy's 2026 proxy statement, dated 26 March 2026, reports 2025 salary of $562,096 and total compensation of $2,173,949 for the senior vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary. The total includes stock awards, the annual incentive, the change in pension value, and all other compensation.

Does a Kansas City general counsel need a Missouri license, a Kansas license, or both?

The license follows the state where the lawyer will practice for that employer. Missouri Supreme Court Rule 8.105 is a limited license to practice exclusively for one qualifying employer in Missouri, plus approved pro bono. The Missouri Board of Law Examiners fee schedule sets that filing fee at $1,500, and the schedule states that fees are non-refundable. Kansas Supreme Court Rule 721, amended effective 28 March 2025, is a restricted license for a single employer in Kansas. The application is due no later than 90 days after the Kansas start date. Rule 707(a)(8) sets the processing fee at $1,250.

What notice period applies before a Kansas City counsel can start?

The start date is the date in the current contract. Missouri Revised Statutes section 290.110 makes unpaid wages of a discharged employee due on the day of discharge. Kansas Statutes section 44-315 requires earned wages, after a discharge or a resignation, not later than the next regular payday. Neither section sets a resignation notice period. The search ends at acceptance. Across 52 general counsel searches since 2017, that acceptance is a median of 11 weeks.

How long does a general counsel search take, and how is it paid?

Across 52 general counsel searches since 2017, the shortlist arrives in 24 days and the accepted offer in a median of 11 weeks, range 8 to 16. The fee is retained only, 25 to 30 percent of total first-year compensation. Thirty percent of that fee is paid at engagement and kept if the client cancels. GC, CLO, and CCO searches carry a 12-month replacement term. Other in-house searches carry 6 months. Offer acceptance on corporate mandates is 96 percent. The Kansas City logistics file closed in 12 weeks in 2025, which is the acceptance, and the contractual notice runs after it.
