Lawyer salary in Maine 2026: Augusta cells versus Boston lockstep.

Maine's May 2025 OEWS median is $113,120. A New England company that actually matches lockstep is reading a $235,000 first-year base effective 1 July 2026. Those two numbers do not belong on the same offer sheet.

Two tables. One of them is the offer.

The dated lawyer salary Maine cell is a $113,120 median on the May 2025 OEWS survey. Sartori maps on the order of 67,000 New York lawyers as a coverage file, not as a Maine wage survey. A New England company that actually matches lockstep is reading a $235,000 first-year base effective 1 July 2026.

Lens 01 · The two tables Maine’s median and Boston lockstep are not the same instrument.

WageDex’s compilation of May 2025 OEWS puts Maine lawyers at a $113,120 median. The Milbank memorandum of 2 June 2026, effective 1 July 2026, puts a Boston-matching first-year at $235,000. A general counsel who averages them is matching a number that does not exist. Name the table before you name a number.

The 2026 lawyer salary Maine table, cell by cell.

The published Maine OEWS cell is not a survey of what a New England company matches, and it is not an average of Boston lockstep. It is the wage-and-salary distribution a covered Maine lawyer is paid.

WageDex’s compilation of the May 2025 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics file puts Maine lawyers (SOC 23-1011) at a $113,120 median and a $129,600 mean, on 2,280 covered jobs. The 10th percentile is $76,820; the 25th $82,830; the 75th $139,110; the 90th $215,610. CareerOneStop’s Salary Finder states that the current data are May 2025 estimates. Maine ranks 40th of 53 states and territories on the median, 29 percent below the national $159,670 the Occupational Outlook Handbook, last modified 27 August 2026, reports for the profession. That national cell is the whole occupation, self-employed included. The Maine OEWS cell is wage-and-salary jobs only. They are not the same instrument, and they are not averaged on this page.

CareerOneStop’s May 2025 area table is the geography inside that statewide cell. Portland-South Portland prints the state high-water mark: median $129,990, 75th $169,710, 90th $226,030. Bangor’s median is $116,240; Lewiston-Auburn $105,240; Northeast Maine Balance of State $100,590. Southwest Maine Balance of State — Kennebec County and the neighboring nonmetro counties, which is where Augusta actually sits, because the capital is not its own OEWS metro — prints a $102,690 median, a $75,170 10th percentile, and a $142,890 90th. Lawyer salary Augusta is that Southwest cell plus the posted public band, not a third unpublished survey.

The Occupational Outlook Handbook, last modified 27 August 2026, is the industry cut a chief legal officer uses when the seat is public versus private. Massachusetts, named here only as the New England comparator and not as a market to explain, prints a May 2025 OEWS lawyer median of $176,680 on WageDex’s state ranking; Boston-Cambridge-Newton prints $183,350. The May 2023 OEWS HTML dump, the last full static state table, put Maine lawyers at 1,970 jobs and a $47.48 median hourly wage, about $98,760 annualized. That is a dated before-cell. It is not a same-worker raise.

The lockstep column of the same dated comparison is not a Maine wage. Milbank’s associate memorandum of 2 June 2026, hosted by Above the Law, sets bases effective 1 July 2026: class of 2026 and 2025 at $235,000, then $245,000, $270,000, $320,000, $385,000, $410,000, $440,000, and $455,000 for the class of 2018. Bloomberg Law, on 17 June 2026, reported that more than a dozen firms had adopted the $235,000–$455,000 ladder within two weeks. NALP’s 2025 Associate Salary Survey, as of 1 January 2025 and published in the May 2025 national summary, still put the Boston all-firms first-year median at $225,000* on nine offices — the pre-raise cell, and a Boston office sample, not a Maine firm sample. Nationally, NALP’s first-year median for firms of 250 or fewer lawyers was $150,000, the size band Maine Law’s class actually enters.

Two derived reads follow from those dated cells, and from nothing else. A New England company matching the 1 July 2026 first-year base is paying more than twice Maine’s statewide median, and more than the 90th percentile of Southwest Maine OEWS lawyers ($142,890). Maine’s own 90th percentile, $215,610, still sits below that first-year base. The Office of the Attorney General’s Augusta Litigation posting of 27 August 2026, $75,067.20 to $145,371.20, has a ceiling that clears the Portland median and still does not reach the statewide 90th. Those comparisons are arithmetic on published cells. They are not a single-publisher table, and they are not an Augusta in-house midpoint — no such midpoint was published in the research for this page, and none is invented here.

Maine’s 90th percentile still sits below a Boston first-year base.

03 Who pays it

Three buyer stacks. The lockstep matcher is not among them.

The Maine lawyer this salary page is about is paid by a regional firm, a Maine-campus legal department, or a public office. The company that actually matches Boston lockstep is almost never a Maine employer.

Augusta public cellBoston lockstep matcher

  1. Public stack Assistant Attorneys General, Assistant District Attorneys, staff public defenders, assigned counsel, AUSAs. Posted bands and vouchers. Augusta, the eight DA districts, Portland and Bangor federal.
  2. Regional firm Portland and Augusta desks at Maine-based platforms of roughly 70 to 100 attorneys. Corporate, energy, labor, land use, bankruptcy, litigation for Maine companies.
  3. In-house corporate Portland campus, Westbrook headquarters, Freeport retailer, Bath shipyard, T&D utility. A company band reported into a national or HQ legal department.
  4. Lockstep matcher A New England — usually Boston — company, or a national firm’s Boston office. Named here as the contrast the opening table requires. Not the Maine buyer.

Mainebiz’s 2025 ranking, published 17 November 2025, is the public size table for who pays associates in this geo. Verrill ranked first with 90 Maine-based attorneys after a hiring spree that included laterals from Eaton Peabody, the Bangor firm that wound down in summer 2025, and a four-attorney bankruptcy team from Bernstein Shur that started 30 June 2025. Drummond Woodsum reported 87 Maine attorneys. The top five rounded out by Bernstein Shur, Pierce Atwood, and Preti Flaherty. Bernstein Shur’s own site, accessed 11 September 2026, describes 100-plus attorneys and offices in Maine and New Hampshire; 2026 Best Law Firms gave it regional Tier 1 in Augusta for land use and zoning. Drummond Woodsum’s Chambers USA 2025 release, dated 27 June 2025, is Band 1 in Maine for bankruptcy, corporate/M&A, and energy and natural resources, and Band 1 nationwide for Native American Law. Preti Flaherty is the Augusta-adjacent regulatory firm, with an explicit Augusta office and a government-affairs desk that sits across the street from the dockets the AAGs defend. Chambers USA labor and employment for Maine, accessed 11 September 2026, still ranks Pierce Atwood in Band 1, with Bernstein Shur, Drummond Woodsum, Littler Mendelson, and Verrill in Band 2. Those are the management-side employment buyers a head of legal actually meets.

The in-house stack is a handful of Maine-campus corporates, not a census. A Fortune 500 disability insurer runs a significant Portland campus at 2211 Congress Street; publicly visible legal titles on that campus have included AVP and Counsel, VP and Chief Counsel for insurance operations, and Deputy General Counsel, with a posted gate of a J.D., a license in at least one jurisdiction, and five or more years. An S&P 500 animal-diagnostics manufacturer is headquartered at One IDEXX Drive, Westbrook: about 11,000 employees and customers in 175 countries, per the company’s about page accessed 11 September 2026; a 27 March 2024 proxy describes an Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary leading global legal, governance, and compliance. Commercial-counsel postings for that Westbrook HQ have described a 45-plus-person global Legal and Compliance team — a global headcount, not a Maine-only census, and not converted into a local figure here. A NYSE payments platform is headquartered in Portland; its 5 June 2024 IR release appointed a Chief Legal Officer and Corporate Secretary whose scope covers securities, governance, regulatory, commercial contracting, M&A, and litigation across U.S. offices including the Maine headquarters. Other corporate legal buyers, named by type: healthcare systems, a Navy shipbuilder at Bath inside the Portland-South Portland OEWS metro, the two investor-owned electric utilities on the Maine PUC docket, a privately held Freeport retailer, and a bank that has posted Portland-located counsel titles. In-house lawyer headcount at those Maine campuses is not a published census and is omitted.

The public stack is the one that prints a band a general counsel can put next to the OEWS cell. Maine’s Attorney General, appointed by the Legislature, hires Assistant Attorneys General across ten topical divisions: Administrative Services, Child Protection, Child Support, Consumer Protection, Criminal, Health and Human Services, Investigation, Litigation, Natural Resources, and Professional and Financial Regulation. Open postings when accessed in September 2026 included Child Protection in Bangor and Portland, Litigation in Augusta, Welfare/Criminal, and a Director of Healthcare Crimes Unit, plus Assistant District Attorney seats in Districts 3, 5, 7, and 8. The Litigation AAG is not entry-level: three or more years of civil litigation preferred, Maine Bar or eligibility. Eight popularly elected District Attorneys prosecute the majority of state crimes; the enacted District Attorneys Salaries line carries 100.000 positions. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maine, accessed 11 September 2026, describes approximately 50 permanent staff including Assistant United States Attorneys, with a main office in Portland and a branch in Bangor. The Maine Commission on Public Defense Services is the volume criminal-defense buyer: 350-plus contracted private lawyers, a $150 hourly rate, and a growing staff public-defender system.

Three 2026 buyer stacks a company must name before it writes a Maine band. Architecture and instrument, not a blended mean. Dollar cells live in the sortable OEWS table and on the spread above.

04 What moves hiring

Three Maine drivers. None of them pays lockstep.

The 2026 hiring in this geo is a Sixth Amendment injunction, a PFAS sales prohibition, and an 800-megawatt wind selection — not a 2 June associate memorandum from a New York firm.

Constitutional clockInfrastructure docket

  1. Robbins liability Kennebec County Superior Court holds the State in violation of the Sixth Amendment. Continuous representation from attachment, including plea, bail, and pretrial investigation.
  2. The 14- and 60-day clocks In-custody defendants without counsel past 14 days are released; charges without counsel past 60 days are dismissed without prejudice. PDS must staff or roster to those clocks.
  3. Chapter 90 Sales prohibitions on intentionally added PFAS in listed consumer products take effect. Product-regulatory and environmental counsel, often out-of-state general counsel plus Maine local counsel.
  4. Northern Maine selection Commission announcement of a preferred transmission line and an onshore-wind award. Energy, land-use, municipal, and FERC seats at Portland and Augusta firms. A selection to negotiate, not a signed PPA.

In Robbins v. State of Maine, Kennebec County Superior Court granted summary judgment on liability on 3 January 2025: the State had routinely violated the Sixth Amendment right to effective assistance of counsel. The ACLU of Maine’s 6 January 2025 release, and the opinion itself, put more than 930 cases without representation as of 2 January 2025; by the 23 January 2025 hearing the pending unrepresented criminal caseload was 991, with a median of 66 days without counsel. Maine Public, on 6 January 2025, reported that the waitlist had roughly tripled during 2024 and that Maine had been the last state without staff public defenders. The 7 March 2025 permanent injunction, after a three-day bench trial, ordered the Commission to provide continuous representation and to file a written plan by 3 April 2025. Concrete relief: in-custody defendants detained more than 14 days after initial appearance without counsel must be released, subject to conditions; in-custody or out-of-custody defendants without counsel for more than 60 days must have charges dismissed without prejudice. Neighbor-state public-defense protocols may be named for contrast; they are not explained here. The hiring consequence is junior-to-mid criminal-defense seats at staff PD offices and on the assigned-counsel roster, plus AAG capacity to defend the Commission. It is not a partner-level energy seat, and it is not a $235,000 first-year.

The Maine Commission on Public Defense Services’ 2025 annual report, and the subsequent appropriations coverage, is the budget sitting under that order. The assigned-counsel hourly rate moved from $80 to $150 in 2023. PDS paid about 325,000 attorney hours in FY25 and was on pace for about 360,000 in FY26. Eligibility renewals ran 304 in FY24, 324 in FY25, and 353 in FY26. The House passed a $13 million emergency appropriation on 12 March 2026; a 28 July 2026 report still projected a further shortfall of about $4 million. Waitlist figures differ across accounts — on the order of 150 in one March 2026 report, back above 400 in another — and are carried here as a range, not a point. Mid-career criminal-defense lawyers re-enter the roster when the $150 rate is actually paid, and they exit when the Commission signals a freeze. That is the uncomfortable supply fact on the public stack: the rate is known; the voucher is not always funded.

Product-regulatory demand is a statute with a date, not a forecast. Amended Chapter 90, including Currently Unavoidable Use determinations, took effect 7 October 2025. Sales prohibitions for intentionally added PFAS in listed products — cleaning products, cookware, cosmetics, dental floss, juvenile products, menstruation products, most textile articles, ski wax, upholstered furniture, and listed products in fluorinated containers — took effect 1 January 2026 under 38 M.R.S. § 1614, as the Maine Department of Environmental Protection’s PFAS-in-products page, updated 8 April 2026, sets out. Later waves are dated 1 January 2029, 2032, and 2040. MDEP approved two of eleven timely CUU requests for the 2026 wave, both time-limited to 1 January 2031. The seat is product-regulatory and environmental counsel at manufacturers selling into Maine, often an out-of-state general counsel plus Maine local counsel, and AAG Natural Resources on the state side. Seniority typically 4 to 12 years. It is not a lockstep class-year.

The Maine Public Utilities Commission, on 25 August 2026, announced results of the Northern Maine Renewable Energy Development Program RFP under 35-A M.R.S. § 3210-I (Docket 2026-00033): preferred transmission of 1,200 MW by Avangrid Networks terminating at Haynesville, and an 800 MW onshore-wind generation award, with Maine’s share about 600 MW. Estimated Maine net benefits of $387 to $425 million over project life, more than 2,500 full-time construction jobs over four years, and more than $2.4 billion in economic output are Commission estimates in that press release. They size the docket. They do not size a legal department. A FERC Section 205 voluntary agreement remains to be filed. Live companions on the same calendar: CMP’s distribution rate case 2026-00043, a Commission-initiated interconnection-cost audit of CMP and Versant (2026-00172), and a 14 September 2026 workshop on data-center informal investigation 2026-00142. That last docket is a workshop, not a siting approval, and is not treated here as a hiring wave.

The company that matches Boston lockstep is almost never a Maine employer.
On who matches lockstep
05 Matching it

A general counsel matches the last Maine cell, not lockstep minus a discount.

The number a company pays to hire a Maine lawyer is the published OEWS or AAG cell the seat sits on, not a Boston first-year marked down. Sartori's New York associate telemetry is the record of what happens when that matching is skipped.

Sartori & Partners has worked the New York legal market for more than 10 years, for companies and for firms, on associate-line searches. Over the trailing three years the New York associate desk closed 33 searches at a 94 percent completion rate, on a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks, with counter-offer incidence at 37 percent and a median of 11 working days from offer to acceptance. Eleven of those 33 files were New England company seats with a Maine campus, a Portland or Westbrook in-house brief, or an Augusta-adjacent regulatory-counsel brief. Eight of those eleven closed with a start date. Three ended without one, over a 24-month window inside the same three-year book, when the company’s opening band was written to the Boston lockstep rather than to the Maine OEWS or AAG cell the seat actually sits on. That stall rate is the number on this page that does not flatter the desk: the public cell was matchable; the brief was not. Five of the eleven files ran past the 6-to-12-week band. Seven of the eleven briefs opened with a Boston-lockstep formula. The first thing the search had to do was rewrite the band onto the Portland percentile or the Augusta posted range.

Across 186 lawyers in that New York interview cohort who had held a Maine, northern New England, or New England-company Maine-campus legal seat in the prior decade, 58 percent, over a 24-month window, said the first private-market conversation they took was pitched against Boston lockstep rather than against the Maine cell they sat on. A general counsel at a Portland-campus Fortune 500 disability insurer put it without decoration: the first offer arrived as a Boston discount, and the candidate sent back the Portland OEWS 75th. A chief legal officer at a Portland-headquartered NYSE payments company described the other failure mode: the hire was priced onto a first-year lockstep the Maine campus could not defend internally, and the search reset after compensation committee review. Quarterly surveys running since 2019 are the other instrument behind that lockstep-minus finding. They do not generate a second interview count. Nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles mapped globally is the frame those city reads sit inside. It is not a Maine headcount, and it is not a New York headcount.

Sartori’s New York coverage file records admission, employer, and practice. It does not record a Maine OEWS percentile, an AAG grade, or a PDS voucher history. Every Maine pay cell we work with on this geo comes from the candidate’s last W-2 or offer letter, verified against the published table, not from our mapping. That is the largest blind spot in the file, and it is why a Maine-campus search that skips the table rewrite stalls inside a book that otherwise completes at 94 percent.

The brief as writtenThe brief that can close

  1. Name the stack Regional firm, Maine-campus in-house, or public Augusta. If the requisition cannot say which, it cannot yet say what it pays.
  2. Pull the dated cell OEWS area percentile, posted AAG band, or company range under the 29 July 2026 pay-transparency statute. Not lockstep minus a round number.
  3. Write the band from the cell Match the published cell, then decide whether the company is buying the Maine market, clearing it, or accidentally buying a Boston first-year it will not approve.

Four of the eleven Maine-campus files drew a sitting-employer counter the company had not budgeted. On the public stack that counter cannot clear the posted AAG ceiling; on the regional-firm stack it is a retention bonus inside a Portland scale, not a lockstep match. The 37 percent counter-offer incidence on the full 33-file New York associate book includes those counters.

The in-house work after the start date is not this page’s pay table. Company total-cash bands for counsel through deputy general counsel sit on our in-house counsel salary page for 2026. The lockstep ladder used as the discard comparator sits on our BigLaw associate salary scale for 2026. Augusta public-pay architecture in the federal systems sits on government attorney salary 2026. This page does not repeat those three theses. It supplies the Maine cell a general counsel has to put next to them.

06 The bench

The seat that pays the Maine cell sits in a Maine office.

The lawyer a company hires off this table is a regional-firm associate, a Portland or Westbrook in-house counsel, an Assistant Attorney General, or a rostered criminal-defense lawyer — not a Boston first-year on the Milbank scale.

The University of Maine School of Law Class of 2024 ABA Employment Summary, status as of about 15 March 2025, is the pipeline census. Of 82 graduates, 56 were employed in Maine; New York was second with four, North Carolina third with three. Law-firm placements concentrated in 1–10 lawyer offices (17), with a thinner tail into 101–250 (6) and 251–500 (3) — the regional platforms, not Boston lockstep. Business and industry, government, and public interest each took seven. One federal clerkship. Eight graduates were unemployed and seeking. The ABA Section of Legal Education, on 23 April 2025, put the national class-of-2024 full-time long-term bar-required or JD-advantage rate at 87.1 percent. NALP’s 250-or-fewer first-year median of $150,000 as of 1 January 2025 is the size-band cell those 17 small-firm placements actually sit near. The 701-plus first-year median of $215,000, and Boston’s $225,000*, are the other end of that survey, and they are not this class’s destination.

University of Maine School of Law Class of 2024 ABA Employment Summary, 10-month status about 15 March 2025. Selected placement counts, not a wage table. The 1–10 lawyer office bar is the modal private-practice seat.

ABA Employment Summary for 2024 Graduates, University of Maine School of Law.

The Maine Board of Overseers of the Bar register, accessed 11 September 2026, is the license file, not the jobs file: 3,737 resident active, 35 emeritus, 92 judicial, 22 judicial clerk, 9 federal judge, for a resident total of 3,895; 1,567 non-resident active, for a grand total of 5,468. OEWS wage-and-salary employment of 2,280 is a subset that excludes most self-employed and unincorporated owners. The Maine State Bar Association’s 25 June 2025 Board of Governors minutes put voluntary membership at 2,565, and compared it with Overseers counts as of 12 June 2025: 2,198 of 3,688 resident attorneys (59.6 percent). On or about 3 June 2025 the Overseers dropped 128 attorneys for CLE noncompliance. MSBA membership is not a wage, and it is not a substitute for the OEWS cell.

Public-pay comparators above the AAG band are statutory, not occupational. Ballotpedia’s 2026 pages, citing the Maine Legislature’s 2026–2027 biennium, put the Attorney General’s salary at $150,640 in 2025 and the Supreme Judicial Court associate justice salary at $177,424, with a FY2026 judicial-system budget of $140,263,462 and an Attorney General department budget of $65,006,433. The U.S. District Court for the District of Maine, in the caseload profile for the 12 months ending 31 March 2026, recorded 938 filings (up from 682 the prior year), 759 terminations, 756 pending, three judgeships, and a median civil time to disposition of 5.8 months. Calendar-year 2024, in Ballotpedia’s compilation of Administrative Office tables, was 660 filings. Those dockets size federal civil and criminal demand in Portland and Bangor. They do not print an AUSA dollar table for 2026, and none is invented here.

Credential gates are measured, not anecdotal. Almost every seat on this page wants a J.D. plus Maine Bar admission or eligibility. Litigation AAG prefers three or more years of civil litigation. Portland in-house commercial and insurance-regulatory seats add five to eight years and a specialty. AUSA practice requires District of Maine admission. PDS assigned counsel requires commission eligibility, which is not a bar-exam substitute. Reciprocity from other states still requires Overseers registration to appear in Maine courts. The live 2026 vacancies that actually print a number remain the Augusta AAG band of $75,067 to $145,371 and the $150 PDS voucher. Child-protection trial AAG seats in Bangor and Portland, and a Director of Healthcare Crimes Unit, were on the Attorney General careers page when accessed. Those are 3-to-10-year litigators on the Augusta cell the opening table contrasts with Boston lockstep.

07 Two readers

The lawyer who earns the figure, and the company that pays it.

The lawyer needs to know which Maine cell they sit on. The general counsel needs to know which cell they are matching — and that Boston lockstep is a different buyer.

Your exposure is a Boston-scale brief for a Maine-campus seat the compensation committee will not defend.

  • Name the buyer stack. Regional firm, Maine-campus in-house, or public Augusta. A requisition that says “New England market pay” is not yet a band.
  • Pull the last dated cell. OEWS area percentile, posted AAG range, or the wage range the 29 July 2026 statute now requires you to print. Not lockstep minus a round number.
  • Budget the sitting-employer counter. Regional firms and public offices can counter inside their own scale. They cannot match $235,000. The company can. That is the only structural premium this table creates, and most Maine searches do not need it.
  • Do not gold-plate the requisition. The in-house total-cash conversation begins after the Maine cell is matched, on the in-house counsel salary page, not on this one.
  • Treat Robbins and Chapter 90 as docket, not as a raise. They change which seats you open. They do not move the OEWS median onto the Milbank scale.

Your pay is a published Maine cell. Carry the instrument name into the first conversation, or the company will invent a Boston one.

  • Know which table you sit on. Portland percentile, Southwest Maine / Augusta cell, posted AAG band, or PDS voucher. Companies still open with lockstep. The correction is the cell, not a speech about cost of living.
  • A Portland in-house move is not a Boston move. The May 2025 Portland-South Portland median is $129,990. The Boston first-year is $235,000. Those are different buyers.
  • Public-to-company is a band rewrite, not a title rewrite. An Augusta AAG ceiling of $145,371 is already above the Portland median. The company is buying the docket you cannot take with you, not a lockstep class year.
  • Assigned counsel is a rate, not a salary. $150 an hour is the 2026 voucher. It is not equivalent to a $235,000 base, and it is not paid when the Commission is in a freeze.
  • Clearing the Maine 90th is not lockstep. $215,610 is still below a Boston first-year. Read a company offer against your last Maine cell. The class-year scale lives on a different page.

Three New York associate-line files, presented as anonymized composites from the same 33-search book, show the matching problem in the only form a hiring committee can use. A Fortune 500 disability insurer’s Portland campus opened a regulatory-counsel seat against a Boston-lockstep band, then rewrote it to the Portland OEWS 75th after the first shortlist; the search closed in 10 weeks once the compensation committee stopped treating the campus as a Boston office. An S&P 500 diagnostics manufacturer at Westbrook hired an employment counsel onto a hybrid onsite brief, matching near the statewide 75th rather than the first-year lockstep, in eight weeks; the gate was eight years of employment advice and investigations, not a class year. A T&D utility regulatory-counsel seat stalled at week 14 when the opening band still assumed a Boston-scale first-year the Augusta-adjacent docket would not support. Client described by category only. No real company, no named lawyer, no named office beyond type and tier.

The service view of filling these seats from the reference city sits on our New York in-house counsel recruiting page and, for the associate-line book this telemetry comes from, on associate recruiting in New York. The research program behind the cohort, the surveys, and the mandate counts is described on our research page. A company that is building a legal function from nothing rather than adding a Maine-campus or Augusta-adjacent seat to an existing one should start with hiring your first general counsel instead; the sequencing questions there come before any OEWS cell.

Common questions about lawyer pay in Maine in 2026

What is the lawyer salary Maine median in 2026?

The May 2025 OEWS median is $113,120, 29 percent below the national $159,670. WageDex’s compilation of that survey, with CareerOneStop confirming the May 2025 vintage, also prints a $129,600 mean on 2,280 covered wage-and-salary jobs. Portland-South Portland is the high-water mark at $129,990. A New England company that matches Boston lockstep is reading a $235,000 first-year base effective 1 July 2026, from the Milbank memorandum of 2 June 2026 — a different table, paid by a different buyer.

What is lawyer salary Augusta against the statewide cell?

Augusta sits in the Southwest Maine nonmetropolitan OEWS cell, median $102,690 in May 2025. CareerOneStop’s table puts that cell’s 10th percentile at $75,170 and its 90th at $142,890. The Office of the Attorney General posted an Augusta Litigation Division Assistant Attorney General band of $75,067 to $145,371 on 27 August 2026. Attorney salary Augusta is a public or regional-firm number. It is not a Boston first-year.

Do Maine companies pay Boston lockstep to in-house counsel?

Almost never: the $235,000–$455,000 scale effective 1 July 2026 is not a Maine-employer table. It is paid by Am Law-elite and prestige-law firms, and by the rare New England company that matches it. No Maine-headquartered public company in the research for this page publishes an in-house scale at that lockstep. In house counsel salary Augusta tracks the posted AAG band and the Southwest Maine OEWS cell, not Milbank.

How does a Portland in-house band compare with Augusta public pay?

Portland-South Portland’s May 2025 OEWS lawyer median is $129,990, above the statewide $113,120 and above Augusta’s Southwest Maine $102,690. The Augusta AAG ceiling of $145,371, posted 27 August 2026, sits between the statewide 75th percentile ($139,110) and the statewide 90th ($215,610). A general counsel hiring in Portland is not hiring on the Augusta public table, and is still not hiring on Boston lockstep.

How long does a New England company take to fill a Maine legal seat?

Sartori’s New York associate desk works to 6 to 12 weeks, with a 94 percent completion rate on 33 closed searches over three years. Median offer-to-acceptance on that desk is 11 working days. Counter-offer incidence on the same 33 files is 37 percent. Files that open against Boston lockstep for a Maine campus seat run past that window; files that open against the dated OEWS or AAG cell do not.

Who actually hires lawyers in Maine in 2026?

Three buyer stacks: regional full-service firms of roughly 70–100 Maine attorneys, in-house departments at Maine-campus corporates, and the public stack in Augusta and the eight DA districts. Mainebiz, on 17 November 2025, put Verrill at 90 Maine-based attorneys and Drummond Woodsum at 87. The Office of the Attorney General hires across ten topical divisions. The company that matches Boston lockstep is typically a Boston buyer, named here only as the contrast the table requires.

OEWS cells are wage-and-salary occupational estimates, May 2025, not take-home and not self-employed. Area percentiles that the CareerOneStop table did not publish are omitted, not guessed. The AAG band is a 27 August 2026 posting, not an OEWS cell. Boston lockstep is the Milbank scale effective 1 July 2026, paid by a New England company that matches it. Overseers counts are licenses, not jobs. PDS hours and waitlists are voucher demand, not salary. Commission net-benefit estimates size a docket, not a legal department.
