Lawyer salary in Nevada 2026: the lockstep window.

A Las Vegas hire still closes this year against the national lockstep only on a thin tail. A gaming-desk premium is not worth matching after Strip profits fell away. The dated table is below; both the lawyer who earns it and the company that pays it are the readers.

The 2026 Nevada pay window is not the national lockstep.

How much do lawyers make in Nevada is a desk question, not a national-scale question. A Las Vegas hire still closes this year against lockstep only on the thin tail, and a gaming-desk premium is not worth matching after the Strip's profits fell away.

Lens 01 · The dated median Nevada's lawyer median is $150,510, not $235,000.

Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics for May 2025, republished by O*NET, put Nevada wage-and-salary lawyers at a $150,510 median against a United States lawyer median of $159,670. Below the national median. Not on the lockstep floor.

The dated median is the start of the argument, not the end of it. The percentile window is laid out next.

02 The dated table

How much do lawyers make in Nevada against the 2026 lockstep.

The wage-and-salary series, the public posted scales, and the national lockstep floor are three different instruments. Mixing them is how a 2026 requisition gets mispriced.

The May 2025 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics for lawyers, SOC 23-1011, republished by O*NET, are the dated table this page opens on. Nevada: 10th percentile $96,010; 25th $122,470; median $150,510; 75th $200,970; 90th $414,290. Las Vegas-Henderson-North Las Vegas prints the same median as the state, $150,510, with a 90th percentile of $414,290. Reno’s median is $163,380. Carson City is $142,500. The balance of Nevada nonmetropolitan is $137,920. The United States lawyer median on the same vintage is $159,670. What the series measures is employer-reported wage-and-salary lawyers. It does not measure a partner’s residual draw, and it does not measure a self-employed solo.

Two years earlier, the May 2023 OEWS state table recorded 6,580 wage-and-salary lawyers in Nevada, a location quotient of 0.92, and a median hourly wage of $60.12 — an implied annual median of about $125,050 on a 2,080-hour year. The step from that median to $150,510 in May 2025 is the measured BLS series, not a lockstep raise. The State Bar of Nevada’s 2025 demographics put nearly 14,000 attorneys licensed to practice in the state. Those two counts are not interchangeable: roughly one in three licenses sits outside Nevada, and the bar file includes retired, inactive and non-practicing members the wage series never sees.

The derived gap between Milbank’s first-year floor of $235,000, effective 1 July 2026, and the Nevada BLS median of $150,510 is $84,490. The gap to Boyd’s Class of 2024 private-practice median of $115,000 is $120,000. A Las Vegas hire still closes against lockstep only in the thin 501-plus tail. A general counsel who treats those gaps as a market-clearing premium is paying New York money into a Nevada series that has not asked for it. A lawyer reading the same numbers as a career signal should do the reverse: the lockstep is real, and it is thin. A company asking about lawyer salary Las Vegas is usually asking about the median, the tail, or the public scale, and those are three different answers.

Posted public scaleNational lockstep tail

  1. Public posted scale Deputy district attorney, deputy attorney general, judicial base. A published hourly or statutory number, a hard Nevada-bar gate, no lockstep conversation at all.
  2. Regional clearing price Western full-service offices, Nevada-rooted licensing firms, operator in-house seats, Reno natural-resources groups. Paid from local P&L and local pipeline, not from a New York memorandum.
  3. National lockstep tail A matching 501-plus or national-office track. Scarce in the graduating class, real when it is the actual seat, and a misprice when it is borrowed as a comparable for everyone else.

03 Who pays

Four desks write the check. Only one of them talks lockstep.

The Nevada lawyer this thesis is about is paid by a regional or national firm office, an in-house department at a public casino-resort, a public prosecutor or AG seat, or a mining, utility or data-center team in the north.

01

Regional and national firm offices

Las Vegas and Reno offices of Western full-service platforms, plus Nevada-rooted gaming and administrative-law firms that appear before the Board. Paid on a regional scale, not on Milbank's ladder, unless the office is on the matching list.

02

In-house at a public casino-resort

The actual gaming desk: associate legal counsel for risk, legal counsel for hospitality contracts or labor, vice president and legal counsel for property-level compliance. Paid from the operator P&L that just compressed.

03

Public prosecutor, defender, AG, clerk

Clark County deputy district attorneys opening at $100,000; DAG grades around $115,804; the Attorney General at $135,511; Supreme Court justices at $170,000. Boyd's pipeline still feeds these seats.

04

Mining, utility, data-center north

Reno and rural natural-resources, water, tax-abatement and interconnection counsel, funded by 2024 mineral value of about $10.1 billion and by NRS 360.754 data-center files. A different clock from the Strip.

Start with who holds the ticket, because that is the buyer map the wage series never draws. The State Bar of Nevada’s 2025 demographics survey counted private practice at 5,280 and public lawyers at 1,314 among respondents. Firm size among those reporting: solo 2,869; two to four lawyers 1,544; five to fourteen 1,633; fifteen or more 2,588. The paying market is majority private-practice and heavily solo and small. The fifteen-plus “large firm” bucket is still a minority. Public lawyers are a counted desk, not a residual. Average age of the surveyed membership: 53.7.

The local pipeline confirms the mix. Boyd’s Class of 2025 ABA Employment Summary, status 16 March 2026, placed 18 graduates in firms of one to ten lawyers, 11 in firms of eleven to twenty-five, 11 in firms of twenty-six to fifty, 4 in firms of fifty-one to one hundred, 3 in firms of 101 to 250, 5 in firms of 251 to 500, and 9 in firms of 501 or more. Government took 15. State and local clerkships took 20; federal clerkships took 3. Business and industry took 1. Ninety-one of 117 stayed in Nevada; 5 went to Utah and 3 to Arizona. A 501-plus hire is nine people in a class, not the market. NALP’s national Class of 2025 findings, published 5 August 2026, put the private-practice median at $155,000 and the median in firms of more than 500 lawyers at $225,000 — the pre-June 2026 scale, already a different country from Boyd’s $115,000 private-practice median a year earlier.

Attorney salary Las Vegas, on the firm side, is a regional-office number until the office is actually on the matching list. The Las Vegas office of a Western full-service platform is a real seat and it is not a New York lockstep office. Snell & Wilmer opened Las Vegas in April 2001 and, by August 2024, had a bench of 29 local attorneys in Downtown Summerlin. Chambers USA 2025 ranked that firm in Nevada for general commercial litigation and real estate. Greenberg Traurig lists a Las Vegas office among its locations and names gaming among local practices. The Nevada-rooted alternative is a three-office gaming and administrative-law firm, Chambers USA 2026 Band 1 for Gaming & Licensing in Nevada, whose lawyers have previously sat as Board chair, Corporate Securities chief, deputy attorney general to the Board, and investigative agent. Those are licensing and administrative-law practices that appear before the Nevada Gaming Control Board and the Nevada Gaming Commission. They are not in-house at a casino, and they are not paid on Cravath-scale lockstep.

The in-house gaming desk lives inside the operator. MGM Resorts International’s own legal careers hub describes the title stack a general counsel actually has to fill: Associate Legal Counsel for risk and general-liability litigation, with a Nevada bar required; Legal Counsel covering hospitality, sponsorship and venue agreements; Legal Counsel for labor and employment, with NLRB, EEOC, DOL and OSHA work and a Las Vegas residence; Vice President and Legal Counsel for property-level business development, compliance, labor and government relations. As of the check, that hub listed no open legal jobs and pointed candidates to a talent community. What it measures is the credential gate and the work, not a salary table. No public, dated in-house gaming band is used on this page, because none was found in a primary document. The gaming-desk premium, when it exists, is this employer’s problem.

Nevada licensees reporting a firm-size band in the State Bar of Nevada 2025 demographics survey. Solo and small remain the weight of the private-practice market; the 15-plus bucket is large in headcount and still a minority of the surveyed mix.

State Bar of Nevada, Member Demographics, 2025 Annual Report survey.

Public buyers are not a footnote. Clark County’s Deputy District Attorney posting, open 24 March to 26 May 2026, started at $48.07 an hour, $100,000 annually, on a range of $45.01 to $88.64 an hour — about $93,621 to $184,371 on a 2,080-hour year. The credential gate is a certificate of admission to the Nevada bar and eligibility to practice in Nevada courts. Divisions: Criminal, Juvenile, Family Support. The counterpart public defender sits in the same county. The Attorney General’s 2025 salary is $135,511; the office’s FY 2026 budget is $61.8 million; a March 2026 unclassified Deputy Attorney General posting for governmental affairs and natural-resources agencies listed $115,804. Associate justices of the Nevada Supreme Court take $170,000 under NRS 2.050 until the first Monday in January 2027; Court of Appeals judges take $165,000. The Nevada Judicial System’s FY 2026 budget is $80.5 million. The United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Nevada runs Las Vegas and Reno. Boyd Class of 2025 placed 20 graduates into state or local clerkships and 3 into federal clerkships: the clerkship desk is a measured first job.

Northern industrial buyers run on a different cash register. Nevada Gold Mines — Barrick 61.5 percent, Newmont 38.5 percent — reported 2025 personnel costs of $1.39 billion and taxes of $542 million. The Nevada Division of Minerals put 2024 mineral commodity value at about $10.1 billion, gold and silver about $8.4 billion, gold production 3,479,748 troy ounces, and a U.S. Geological Survey share of about 70 percent of U.S. gold. Data-center operators buy real-estate, tax-abatement, water and interconnection counsel; the statutory hook is NRS 360.754, administered by the Governor’s Office of Economic Development. The Public Utilities Commission of Nevada is the interconnection and rate docket. None of those seats is priced off Strip net income, and none of them is a reason to import the lockstep floor into a Reno offer letter.

04 When it still closes

A Las Vegas hire still closes this year against lockstep. On a tail, not as a policy.

The lockstep is a New York memorandum that a handful of firms matched. A Nevada office that never posted it is not behind. A Nevada office that is on the matching list has a different problem.

Milbank’s memorandum of 2 June 2026, effective 1 July 2026, moved first-year base from $225,000 to $235,000 and eighth-year base from $435,000 to $455,000. Junior classes rose $10,000; fifth-year and above rose $20,000. That is the national instrument documented on our BigLaw associate salary scale for 2026. Above the Law’s running scorecard, opened 5 June 2026 and updated through at least 31 August 2026, lists the first-mover and a subsequent wave of litigation boutiques and a handful of Am Law 100 names. Several large full-service firms had not matched months after the memo; some matches were dated 1 January 2027. Bloomberg Law, in a 17 June 2026 column, recorded more than a dozen firms in the first two weeks and noted that only five of them sat among the nation’s 100 highest-grossing firms in that first wave.

A Las Vegas hire still closes against lockstep in two situations, and they are narrower than a compensation committee usually wants them to be. First: the office is itself on the matching list, and the seat is a lockstep-track associate. Second: the company or the firm is buying a portable national-firm skill the local market cannot supply, and the candidate will not move without the floor. Across that New York interview cohort, 286 of 418 respondents who had priced a non-lockstep U.S. market seat over a 24-month window said a first-year $235,000 match was justified only when the seat required a portable national-firm skill the local market could not supply.

Mandate telemetry is the second instrument. Of 33 closed New York associate searches over the trailing three years, 12 compared a regional or in-house offer against the published lockstep floor; 7 of those 12 closed below lockstep when the seat did not require a New York ticket. Completion on that line is 94 percent. The typical file runs 6 to 12 weeks. A Las Vegas general counsel who is not hiring a matching-list associate is in the majority of those 12 files, not the minority.

Close without matchingMatch the floor

  1. Regional or public seat The candidate is Boyd-priced or public-scale-priced. The offer is a Nevada number. Lockstep is a comparable the other side should not be allowed to use.
  2. Operator in-house, non-regulatory Risk, hospitality contracts, property-level labor. Paid from the operator P&L. Scarcity is not the same as a New York skill the local market cannot supply.
  3. Matching-list or scarce regulatory tail The office posted the scale, or the seat is Board-facing licensing talent the prediction-market docket actually consumes. This is the only 2026 case for a $235,000 conversation.

Direct testimony from that 24-month window, from a hiring partner at a Western full-service firm’s Las Vegas office: the office had not posted the new scale, was not going to, and would lose a process the moment a candidate was allowed to treat Milbank as the floor. That is not a market failing to keep up. It is a market that was never on the list. A Las Vegas hire still closes this year against lockstep when the company is honest about which of the three stops above it is actually sitting on.

Nevada has no state income tax. The Nevada Gaming Control Board lists that fact among State of Nevada employee benefits. Combined with a lawyer median below the U.S. lawyer median, the tax wedge is why the May 2025 BLS Nevada median of $150,510 can still close a hire against a higher-tax coastal lockstep net, and why a $235,000 gross match on the July 2026 Milbank floor is not required to win a public or regional-firm seat. Argue 2026 offers on after-tax proceeds and on bar-gate time. Do not argue them on Milbank’s first-year number unless the seat is on that number.

The lockstep is a New York memorandum that a handful of firms matched. A Nevada office that never posted it is not behind.
On the matching list
05 The gaming desk

A gaming-desk premium is not worth matching off this P&L.

Prediction-market litigation is a reason to staff a licensing desk. Collapsed Strip net income is a reason not to lift property-level in-house counsel onto a New York floor.

Fiscal 2025 casino net-income change by geography, Nevada Gaming Abstract for the year ended 30 June 2025, press release 10 June 2026. Gaming win held; profit did not. The Strip is the 2026 reason a gaming-desk premium is not automatic.

Nevada Gaming Control Board, Nevada Gaming Abstract – 2025 press release, 10 June 2026.

The Nevada Gaming Control Board’s Gaming Abstract for the fiscal year ended 30 June 2025, released 10 June 2026, is the capital-cycle document a chief legal officer should read before matching anyone. Three hundred and five casinos grossing $1 million or more. Statewide total revenue $30.82 billion, down 2.2 percent. Gaming revenue $11.22 billion, down 0.6 percent, 36.4 percent of total revenue. Net income $1.70 billion, down 34.8 percent. Gaming taxes and fees $1.14 billion. Clark County’s 177 casinos: net income $1.50 billion, down 34.7 percent. The Las Vegas Strip: total revenue $21.08 billion, down 3.7 percent; gaming $5.51 billion, down 3.7 percent; net income $154.2 million, down 81.2 percent. Downtown Las Vegas net income $159.2 million, down 20.2 percent. Washoe County net income $84.9 million, down 50.0 percent. Laughlin and South Shore Lake Tahoe printed net losses. Fifty-two publicly owned casinos accounted for 62.1 percent of statewide gaming revenue — the in-house legal market is concentrated in a few public companies, which is why a general counsel at one of them is reading this page at all.

Calendar-year 2025 taxable gaming revenue, a different universe, was $15.21 billion statewide, up 1.54 percent, per the Board’s December 2025 monthly report. LVCVA’s 2025 accounts still show $80.9 billion in tourism economic impact, Strip occupancy of 83.2 percent against a U.S. STR average of 62.3 percent, and 5,988,200 convention delegates. The destination did not close. The profit that pays in-house counsel compressed. Matching a July 2026 lockstep raise into that P&L is a 2026 mistake unless the seat is scarce regulatory talent on the prediction-market docket.

KalshiEX LLC v. Assad, No. 25-7516, decided by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit on 28 August 2026, held that sports-event contracts on a prediction market are not “swaps” under the Commodity Exchange Act, so Nevada gaming law applies. A unanimous three-judge panel affirmed in part the District of Nevada’s dissolution of a preliminary injunction against Nevada’s enforcement. Election-contract issues were remanded. There is a circuit split with the Third Circuit. The Board described the ruling as a vindication of state regulation of sports betting. The hiring consequence is immediate demand for gaming-regulatory and appellate counsel at the licensing firms that already appear before the Board, and for AG and Board litigation support, at partner and senior-counsel seniority, through 2026 and 2027 while further petitions run. That is not a reason to raise in-house Strip counsel to $235,000. Matching the lockstep floor into a year of collapsed Strip net income is a 2026 mistake unless the seat is scarce regulatory talent.

Operator P&LLicensing fight

  1. Property-level operator counsel Risk, hospitality contracts, labor, government relations at the hotel-casino. Paid from a P&L that just compressed. This is where a premium is not worth matching in 2026.
  2. Labor cycle inside the operator Culinary and NLRB work, Las Vegas residence, traditional labor. A labor desk, not a gaming-licensing premium, and not a lockstep comparable.
  3. Board-facing licensing counsel Findings of suitability, restricted and nonrestricted licensing, sports betting, online and mobile, manufacturers and distributors. The 2026 docket that actually grew.

A general counsel at a publicly traded casino-resort told us, in the same 24-month window as the interview cohort above, that the 2026 bonus cycle would not fund a lockstep match for a property-level legal counsel seat. The work was real. The P&L was not going to pretend it was a New York office. That is the uncomfortable read from the operator side, and it is the one that makes the rest of the page believable: we will tell a company not to match.

Labor is a separate 2026 desk, not a disguised gaming premium. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported on 8 September 2026 that the Chief Justice of the United States had denied a stay, leaving in effect a federal order that a Summerlin locals casino bargain with Culinary Local 226. MGM’s own Legal Counsel, Labor and Employment posting in November 2025 required NLRB experience and Las Vegas residence. Mid-to-senior traditional-labor counsel inside operators and at management-side firms will work a 2026 and 2027 bargaining calendar. Price that seat as labor. Do not price it as a licensing premium, and do not price it as lockstep.

06 The other clocks

The bar is a clock. The north is a different cash register.

A 2026 close against national lockstep is a local-bar problem as much as a dollars problem. Reno and Storey County are not waiting on Strip net income to pay their lawyers.

Three dated rules now price a Nevada lawyer hire, and only one of them is a wage. The first is ADKT 629, order 18 December 2025, rules effective 19 January 2026. The Nevada Supreme Court replaced the traditional bar with the Nevada Plan: MPRE, Foundational Law Exam, Lawyering Performance Exam, and Supervised Practice Program, all inside a six-year window centered on the LPE. The traditional exam continued only through July 2026 and then ended. There is still no admission by motion and no attorney exam. The May 2026 Foundational Law Exam posted an unofficial pass rate of 76 percent on a scaled passing score of 75: 100 closed-book multiple-choice questions, about four hours, Prometric centers anywhere in the United States, eligible after 42 ABA credits. Attorney applicants pay $325; non-attorneys $150. Laterals with more than six continuous months of active licensed practice in another U.S. jurisdiction in the last two years may seek a supervised-practice exemption; they still sit the FLE and the LPE. Limited-practice routes under SCR 49.1 to 49.5 can seat a corporate counsel who does not appear in Nevada courts. They do not seat a deputy district attorney, a deputy attorney general, or a Board-facing licensing lawyer.

Of 33 closed New York associate searches over three years, 4 ran past the 12-week end of our typical window because the candidate was not admitted in the destination jurisdiction and the client would not wait out a sitting. That is the finding that does not flatter us. We are not slow at assembling a shortlist. We are slow, on this line, when the brief pretends a ticket is a form. A California lockstep associate cannot waive in. Naming California is the contrast; the mechanism that matters is Nevada’s.

The 2026 close clock against the 2026 capital clock. One is a bar rule. One is a P&L. They are not substitutes for each other.
Seat What the 2026 rule actually is What it does to pay Match lockstep?
Lockstep-track associate, matching office Milbank scale effective 1 July 2026; office is on the scorecard The floor is the posted number Yes, because the office posted it
Regional firm, Las Vegas or Reno No waiver; Nevada Plan for any new ticket Regional clearing price; bar delay is the hidden cost No, unless the skill is not locally available
Operator in-house, property-level Strip net income −81.2 percent in FY 2025 Paid from a compressed P&L No
Board-facing licensing counsel KalshiEX LLC v. Assad, 28 August 2026; 2026 NGC notices Senior regulatory demand, not a GC raise Only if the talent is actually scarce
Deputy DA / DAG / clerk Posted and statutory scales; full Nevada license required Public scale is the price Never
Reno natural-resources / data-center NRS 360.754; 2024 mineral value; PUCN dockets Northern cash, northern tightness No; pay the Reno market, not the Strip

The north is the third rule, and it is capital rather than admissions. NRS 360.754 data-center tax abatements, on the Governor’s Office of Economic Development July 2025 fact sheet, run ten years on 10 Nevada-resident FTE within five years, 100 percent of statewide average wage, and $25 million cumulative capex, or twenty years on 50 FTE and $100 million capex, with a personal-property tax abatement of 75 percent and sales-and-use tax down to 2 percent if the GOED Board approves by two-thirds. The statute is effective through 31 December 2056. The Nevada Independent reported on 29 March 2026 that from FY 2017 through 2025, data-center abatements cut about $537 million in local sales-and-use tax. In August 2026 the GOED Board approved a Storey County data-center file for Colovore Reno 1, LLC, a $4.08 million abatement tied to 10 jobs at $59 an hour within five years. On 11 September 2026 the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that Switch spent $196 million on 176 acres in Apex Industrial Park. That is real-estate, due-diligence, water and interconnection work for a Las Vegas firm and for in-house counsel at the owner. It is not a casino general-counsel raise.

Political risk sits on the same files. The Clark County Education Association proposed in September 2026 to end the Local School Support Tax abatement for data centers. The sitting Attorney General, then a gubernatorial candidate, pledged in August 2026 to pause new data-center tax breaks pending audits; the GOED Board, not the governor alone, approves applications. Treat those as 2026 and 2027 government-affairs work, not as enacted tax. A head of legal at a northern mining joint venture told us, in the same 24-month window, that the Reno natural-resources market was tighter than the Strip and that they would pay through a regional-firm midpoint rather than lose a water-rights counsel to a delayed process. Washoe’s 4.8 percent weekly-wage growth against Clark’s 1.2 percent is the public corroboration of that private sentence.

Nevada covered employment in March 2026 was 1,575,700, up 2.0 percent; Clark 1,145,500, up 1.6 percent; Washoe 241,700, up 1.2 percent; together 88.0 percent of state employment, per the same QCEW release. Average weekly wage: Nevada $1,391, 28th among states and 50th in wage growth. The state is still hiring. The Strip P&L is not the state. A chief legal officer who prices a Reno energy associate off Las Vegas visitor volume has used the wrong series.

07 Both readers

Price the desk in front of you. Then decide whether lockstep is even a comparable.

The lawyer who earns the 2026 figure and the company that pays it are reading the same table. They should not be using the same comparable.

We have worked the New York associate market for more than 10 years, for companies and firms that price associate seats against the national lockstep. Over the last three years we closed 33 associate searches with a 94 percent completion rate and a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks. Counter-offer incidence on that line is 37 percent; the median offer-to-acceptance window is 11 working days. Quarterly surveys have run since 2019; they keep the published floor current. The interview cohort is how we hear that floor applied to a seat that is not on it. Three anonymized composites from that associate line, each a Nevada-priced problem a New York client or a New York-barred candidate actually handed us:

A publicly traded Strip operator asked us to fill a property-level legal counsel seat — compliance, labor, government relations, seven-plus years, Nevada bar required. The incoming comparable the human-resources file had attached was the July 2026 first-year lockstep. The general counsel killed it in the first scoping call. The search closed in 9 weeks, below lockstep, on a band the operator could defend to a compensation committee that had just read the Abstract. The candidate who wanted the floor took a matching-list office instead. We lost that person and kept the mandate. That is an acceptable loss.

A Reno natural-resources group inside a Western full-service firm needed a mid-level associate with water and mine-permitting fluency. The candidate was a New York-barred fourth-year who had not started the Nevada Plan. The client would not wait a sitting. The file ran 11 weeks, inside the window only because a Boyd-trained alternative accepted in 11 days. The New York candidate is still a candidate. The seat is filled. Destination-jurisdiction admission is not a closing condition you add after the offer; it is the first filter.

A PE-backed hospitality platform, first in-house employment counsel, Las Vegas residence, Culinary exposure. The incumbent outside firm counter-offered. Counter-offer incidence on this associate line is 37 percent; this file was in it. The company matched enough of the regional-firm midpoint to hold the person and refused, correctly, to match lockstep to win a point of pride. Time-to-fill: 8 weeks. The head of human resources, not the general counsel, had been the one reaching for the New York number. That is the company-side failure mode this page is written to prevent.

Your job is to put a lawyer on the payroll at a price the P&L can defend, on a ticket the state will actually issue this year.

  • Name the desk first. Regional firm, operator in-house, public, or northern industrial. The comparable follows the desk; it does not precede it.
  • Pull the Abstract before the offer grid. Strip net income down 81.2 percent in the FY 2025 Gaming Abstract is a fact a compensation committee will be asked about. Do not make the general counsel explain a lockstep match against it.
  • Budget the bar as a clock. If the seat needs a full Nevada license, the Nevada Plan is a multi-sitting delay. Limited practice seats a corporate counsel who will not appear. It does not seat a deputy DA.
  • Expect the counter-offer. On this associate line it lands 37 percent of the time, and the incumbent regional firm knows the local number better than a New York spreadsheet does.
  • Use the New York desk as a reference, not as a payroll. Our New York associate recruiting page is where the lockstep is actually the market. Nevada is where it is a comparable you have to justify.

Your job is to know which of the four desks you are actually being paid by, and not to treat a memorandum you do not work under as a grievance.

  • Read the 90th percentile honestly. The May 2025 BLS Las Vegas 90th percentile of $414,290 is a tail. Most of the bar does not sit there, and Boyd’s Class of 2024 private-practice median of $115,000 is the local first-job fact.
  • Price Reno as Reno. The May 2025 BLS Reno median of $163,380 and faster wage growth are the northern signal. Mining and data-center work is not a consolation Strip seat.
  • Start the Nevada Plan before you resign. No waiver. The FLE is a computer-based foundational test you can sit at a Prometric center; the LPE is still a sitting.
  • A public scale is a real career. Clark County deputy district attorneys opened at $100,000 in 2026; one DAG grade posted $115,804; Supreme Court justices take $170,000 under NRS 2.050. Those numbers are published. They are not a failure to match Milbank.
  • Explore without putting the current seat at risk. Our confidential CV submission is the candidate door; the company conversation is a different door, and we keep them apart.

The national wage picture, for readers who need the United States series rather than the Nevada one, sits on our 2026 lawyer salary benchmark. Companies building a legal function from nothing rather than adding a seat to an existing one should start with the first general counsel guide instead; the sequencing questions there come before any lockstep conversation. Methodology for the interview cohort, the mandate telemetry and the mapping coverage is on the research page.

Common questions about lawyer pay in Nevada in 2026

How much do lawyers make in Nevada in 2026?

Wage-and-salary lawyers in Nevada posted a May 2025 median of $150,510 in Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics republished by O*NET. That is below the United States lawyer median of $159,670 on the same vintage. Reno sits higher, at $163,380; Las Vegas matches the state median; Carson City is $142,500. The figure is an employer-reported wage, not a partner residual and not a self-employed draw. A first-year on Milbank’s scale effective 1 July 2026 earns $235,000 — $84,490 above the Nevada median — and that scale is a national instrument, not a Nevada clearing price.

How much do lawyers make in Las Vegas compared with Reno?

Reno’s May 2025 lawyer median was $163,380; Las Vegas-Henderson-North Las Vegas sat at $150,510, even though Clark County holds 50.13 percent of Nevada licenses. The Las Vegas 90th percentile, $414,290, is where national-office and operator-tail money actually lives. Washoe County’s average weekly wage grew 4.8 percent in the first quarter of 2026 against 1.2 percent in Clark, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages released 4 September 2026 — the same geographic split that sits under Reno’s higher lawyer median.

Should a company match the $235,000 lockstep for a Las Vegas hire this year?

Match it only for the thin 501-plus tail: 9 of 117 Boyd Class of 2025 graduates landed in 501-plus firms on the ABA Employment Summary. A regional firm, a Strip operator legal department, a deputy district attorney and a Reno natural-resources seat are not on that list. Of 33 closed New York associate searches Sartori ran over three years, 12 compared a regional or in-house offer against the published lockstep floor; 7 of those 12 closed below it when the seat did not need a New York ticket.

When is a gaming-desk premium not worth matching in 2026?

Not in a year when Las Vegas Strip net income fell 81.2 percent to $154.2 million, per the Nevada Gaming Control Board’s Gaming Abstract for the fiscal year ended 30 June 2025. Statewide casino net income fell 34.8 percent to $1.70 billion even as gaming win held near $11.22 billion. Prediction-market litigation after KalshiEX LLC v. Assad (9th Cir. 28 August 2026) is a reason to staff a licensing desk, not a reason to lift a property-level in-house counsel onto the lockstep floor.

Can a California or New York associate waive into the Nevada bar?

No. Nevada has no admission by motion and no attorney exam, and after 19 January 2026 every new licensee must complete the Nevada Plan — Foundational Law Exam, Lawyering Performance Exam, supervised practice, and the MPRE — on a six-year clock (ADKT 629). Laterals with more than six continuous months of active licensed practice in another U.S. jurisdiction in the last two years may seek a supervised-practice exemption; they still sit the FLE and the LPE. A Las Vegas hire that needs a Nevada ticket has a multi-sitting delay, not a waiver.

What does a first-year Nevada lawyer actually earn out of Boyd?

UNLV William S. Boyd School of Law’s Class of 2024 posted a private-practice median of $115,000 and a public-sector median of $75,500 on the NALP summary prepared in July 2025. The full-time long-term median across 92 salaries was $100,000. Clark County deputy district attorneys opened at $100,000 on a posting that ran from 24 March to 26 May 2026. Those are the local first-job prices; they are not the July 2026 national lockstep.

BLS OEWS figures measure wage-and-salary lawyers, not partner residual draw. The State Bar licensee count includes out-of-state and non-practicing members. Gaming Abstract net income is a fiscal-year combined financial of large licensees, not a lawyer wage. Calendar-year taxable win is a different series from Abstract gaming revenue. No public, dated in-house gaming compensation band was found in a primary document; none is stated.

Our own numbers — the New York interview cohort, the 33 closed associate searches, the counter-offer incidence and the offer-to-acceptance window — come from the continuous research program described on our research page.
