Lawyer Salary in Utah 2026: the statewide table, not a New York copy.
BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics for May 2025, released 15 May 2026, put the Utah lawyer median at $132,830. That is the 2026 table a general counsel matching this state actually needs. Treating the Utah lawyer as a discounted New York lockstep hire is the discard, and it is wrong.
The market discards the Utah lawyer as a New York lockstep copy.
A general counsel asking how much do lawyers make in Utah is usually handed a Manhattan class-year ladder. The May 2025 BLS table says otherwise, and the discard is expensive for both the company that over-indexes lockstep and the lawyer who under-prices the seat.
Cravath announced on 19 November 2025 that 2026 first-year base would remain $225,000. Utah’s May 2025 75th percentile, from BLS OEWS via O*NET, is $212,230. The New York number is not the Utah middle. Upper tail, not the median.
The statewide percentiles are the instrument. Metro cells and desk type come next. The ladder is set out below.

A percentile ladder, not a class year.
The 2026 Utah pay table a general counsel actually needs is five cells, a mean, and a job count. It is not eight rungs of New York lockstep.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey for May 2025, published through the Department of Labor’s O*NET wage page, puts Utah lawyers (SOC 23-1011) at a 10th percentile of $59,990, a 25th of $93,460, a median of $132,830, a 75th of $212,230 and a 90th of $347,090. The same vintage puts the U.S. median at $159,670. Utah’s median sits $26,840 below the national cell. That gap is the first fact a compensation committee should write down, not the last.
Sartori maps roughly 67,000 lawyers in New York. That file is the lockstep market people photocopy onto this state. It is not a Utah census, and it is the reason the discard keeps happening: the buyers we sit with have the New York number in their head before they have opened the OEWS table.
Two cells the O*NET wage page does not print sit on the same BLS survey. Rippling, republishing BLS OEWS May 2025 on 20 July 2026, puts Utah lawyer employment at 7,020 wage-and-salary jobs and the mean at $169,480. BLS Table 1 of USDL-26-0725, released 15 May 2026, puts national lawyer employment at 754,500 and the national mean at $185,840. OEWS measures covered wage-and-salary jobs. It excludes most self-employed practitioners and equity partners, and it excludes benefits, equity and nonproduction bonuses. Treat it as a payroll table, not as a partner-profits table.
Lockstep is the upper tail in this state, not the middle. Cravath’s 19 November 2025 announcement kept 2026 first-year base at $225,000, which sits above Utah’s 75th percentile and well below the 90th. The full eight-year ladder is not this page’s thesis; it lives on our BigLaw associate salary scale for 2026. What belongs here is the comparison a Utah general counsel actually has to make: is this seat a 50th-percentile commercial role, a 75th-percentile specialist role, or a genuine 90th-percentile national-office seat.
New York lockstep copyUtah statewide table
- The photocopy A class-year ladder built for Manhattan associate hours, imported as if Salt Lake were a discounted New York. It mis-sets both the offer and the reservation wage.
- The statewide cells Ten, twenty-five, fifty, seventy-five, ninety. One occupation, one vintage, one state. This is the instrument the compensation committee should open first.
- The matching seat Metro cell, then desk type, then credential. A St. George municipal counsel and a Salt Lake funds associate are not the same hire at a blended average.
Of the same New York interview cohort, 286 of 412 associates and counsel who had reviewed a Mountain West or Intermountain in-house or regional-firm offer over a 24-month window priced the Utah number as a discount from lockstep rather than as a statewide percentile. It is the discard, measured. A general counsel at a New York-headquartered healthcare platform with a Wasatch Front legal seat put it in budget language: the compensation committee wanted a Cravath year-three floor for a Salt Lake corporate counsel hire that would never see those hours. We reset the brief to the 75th percentile and the search moved.
NALP’s Class of 2025 Selected Findings, published 5 August 2026 from a 16 March 2026 status date, give the national shape behind that mistake. 21.5 percent of reported full-time, long-term graduate salaries sat at $225,000. 50.0 percent sat between $60,000 and $100,000. The national class median was $100,000; the mean was $128,412; the private-practice median was $155,000; government $81,000; public interest $75,000; judicial clerkships $72,533. Lockstep is a real number and a minority outcome. Using it as the Utah default is how a company talks itself out of a hire, or talks a candidate out of a seat they would have taken.
Purchasing power does not close the gap on its own. The Bureau of Economic Analysis, in its December 2024 release of 2023 regional price parities, put Utah’s all-items index at 95.0 against a U.S. index of 100.0, with housing rents at 106.2 and utilities at 72.9. That is a 2023 price level, not a converter for May 2025 wages, and it does not turn $132,830 into a hidden New York paycheck. A general counsel who “grosses up” lockstep by an RPP factor is still using the wrong instrument.
Lockstep is the upper tail in this state, not the middle.
How much do lawyers make in Utah, metro by metro.
Salt Lake City-Murray is the wage center. Logan is not. A single statewide offer letter pretends otherwise.
The same O*NET reprint of BLS OEWS May 2025 breaks the state into metros. Salt Lake City-Murray, defined as Salt Lake County plus Tooele County in the Mountain-Plains news release of 13 August 2026, posts a lawyer median of $136,990 with a 10th-to-90th band of $54,720 to $362,450. Provo-Orem-Lehi sits at $130,370. Ogden at $124,390. St. George at $117,490. Logan, the bi-state MSA, at $103,120. The High Desert nonmetropolitan cell lands at $102,650. That is a $33,870 median spread from Salt Lake City-Murray to Logan, inside one bar.
BLS news release 26-1338-KAN, published 13 August 2026, adds the occupational mix sitting beside the legal desk in Salt Lake City-Murray. Legal occupations are 1.0 percent of local employment against 0.8 percent nationally, at a mean hourly wage of $64.30 locally against $67.07 nationally. Computer and mathematical occupations are 5.2 percent of local employment — 42,960 jobs — against 3.4 percent nationally. The legal function in this metro works next to a dense technology payroll. That is relevant to what an in-house seat owns. It is not a reason to paste a New York associate scale onto a Salt Lake corporate counsel requisition.
| Metro / area | 10th | Median | 90th | Where the seat sits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Salt Lake City-Murray | $54,720 | $136,990 | $362,450 | Salt Lake County + Tooele County |
| Provo-Orem-Lehi | $75,880 | $130,370 | $350,980 | Utah County / Fourth Division |
| Wasatch Front Fringe (nonmetro) | $75,860 | $127,640 | $261,300 | Nonmetropolitan fringe |
| Ogden | $64,290 | $124,390 | $239,600 | Davis-Weber / Second Division |
| St. George | $62,950 | $117,490 | $218,750 | Fifth Division |
| Logan, UT-ID | $56,770 | $103,120 | $175,760 | First Division, bi-state MSA |
| High Desert (nonmetro) | $71,500 | $102,650 | $209,360 | Nonmetropolitan |
Licensed geography lines up with the wage geography, with one caveat. The Utah State Bar’s 2023–24 Year in Review put 50.9 percent of active attorneys in the Third Division (Salt Lake), 13.8 percent in the Fourth (Utah County / Provo-Orem-Lehi), 8.8 percent in the Second (Davis–Weber / Ogden), 5.5 percent in the Fifth, 2 percent in the First, and 19 percent out of state. Out-of-state actives are a licensure channel, not a Salt Lake payroll. A published response in the March/April 2026 Bar Journal noted that national-firm Salt Lake offices can drive licensure without relocation. Price the job that sits in the building, not the license that sits in the directory.
A head of talent at a PE-backed industrial with Mountain West operations, speaking in the same New York interview cohort, said candidates coming out of national-firm Salt Lake offices treated $225,000 as the reservation wage even for an in-house role that would never see lockstep hours. That is the earner’s version of the discard. The metro table is how both sides get off it.
The pipeline into those metros is still local. The University of Utah S.J. Quinney ABA Employment Summary for 2025 graduates, status date 16 March 2026, put 76 of the employed class in Utah, with Arizona 3 and California 2. The March/April 2026 Bar Journal, citing ABA 2024 location shares, put University of Utah placement into Utah jobs at 79 percent of recent graduates and Brigham Young University at 56 percent. Of 686 admissions in 2025, 486 were graduates of out-of-state schools and 200 of in-state schools. The general counsel who will pay a 2026 lateral is not hiring that modal new graduate; they are hiring someone already on one of the three desks, at a metro cell, against the percentile table.
Three desks write the check. Only one of them looks like lockstep.
The Utah lawyer is paid by a company legal department, by a law firm, or by a public payroll. Blending those three into one average is how the statewide median gets misread.
Start with the company desk, because that is the buyer this page is written to serve. Intermountain Health, the nonprofit integrated system based in Salt Lake City, reports 33 hospitals, more than 400 clinics, 5,000-plus employed physicians and advanced practice providers, telehealth in seven states and more than 68,000 caregivers. The Utah Center for Legal Inclusion named its Legal Department the 2026 Utah Legal Inclusion Award recipient on 6 May 2026. Public titles on that kind of desk run from corporate counsel through region general counsel to chief legal officer. Credential gates from comparable system architecture: a JD from an ABA-accredited school and a license in a state of operation, or a willingness to obtain one within 12 months, with travel to Salt Lake City. That is an in-house payroll, priced against the percentile table, not against a class year.
Most company lawyers in Utah sit on ordinary active licenses, not the House Counsel ticket. Bar year 2023–24 counted 144 active In House Counsel licenses. The Corporate Counsel section had 932 enrollments. Those two figures are not the same population, and treating the 144 as the in-house market will starve a requisition. Of the same New York interview cohort, 61 of 94 respondents who had hired for or sat in a Salt Lake City in-house desk over a 24-month window said their compensation committee first asked for the New York number. The committee question is the discard, arriving from the buyer side.
Company payrollPublic grade
- In-house / GC Healthcare, tech, finance, energy, municipal corporations. The general counsel matches the statewide table to the metro and the scope of the seat.
- Firm-side, two tiers National offices opened in 2021 and 2022 sit beside regional and Utah-headquartered firms that still employ the larger local headcount. Only the first tier looks like lockstep.
- Public-law payroll Attorney General grades, county prosecutors, city attorneys, legal aid. Published bands. Court admission required. Not remote on the AG bulletin we opened.
| Desk | Who writes the check | Pay instrument | Credential gate |
|---|---|---|---|
| In-house / GC function | Healthcare, tech, finance, energy, municipal corporations | Company payroll against the statewide percentile table and the metro cell | Active Utah license, or House Counsel (no court appearance) |
| Firm-side, two price tiers | National offices opened 2021-22 sitting beside regional and Utah-headquartered firms | Lockstep-adjacent cash in the national offices; regional scales below the 90th | Full active admission for court work |
| Public-law payroll | Attorney General, county prosecutors, city attorneys, legal aid | Posted grades and legislated judicial salaries, not origination | Active Utah State Bar; Salt Lake City, typically not remote |
The firm-side market is the minority buyer on this page, and it is the only place lockstep-adjacent cash is a local fact. Kirkland & Ellis opened in Salt Lake City on 3 September 2021 to take graduates from Brigham Young University J. Reuben Clark and the University of Utah S.J. Quinney into corporate, litigation and investment-funds work. Reuters, on 31 March 2022, recorded Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, Mayer Brown, Foley & Lardner and Greenberg Traurig among the out-of-town firms that had set up in the city since 2020, and put Dorsey & Whitney at 80 Salt Lake lawyers as of that date — a snapshot, not a 2026 census. Holland & Hart publishes more than 90 attorneys in Salt Lake City. Snell & Wilmer, in the city since 1991, publishes more than 50. Kirton McConkie publishes more than 200 attorneys across the region, with Salt Lake, Lehi and St. George on the map. Parsons Behle & Latimer’s 2026 published matters run through energy, mining and private equity. That stack is why a single New York ladder cannot price this state: two firm tiers and a company desk sit on the same street.
The public desk is the one with printed grades. The Office of the Utah Attorney General’s 2025 Annual Report, posted January 2026, prints attorney counts of 44 (Appellate), 206 (Civil), 38 (Criminal) and 20 (Public Protection) — 308 across those four departments, serving nearly 60 agencies, boards and commissions. Civil is the largest, with nine divisions including State Agency Counsel, Natural Resources, Environment / Health and Human Services, Highways and Utilities, and Tax / Transit / Financial Services. State Agency Counsel handled 9,820 issues and cases and collected $19.5 million for the Office of State Debt Collection. Criminal Appeals received new legislative funding, hired six attorneys, and filed 40 percent more briefs than the prior year. The 17 October 2025 Assistant Attorney General bulletin is the pay table for that shop: Grade I $121,500 through Grade IV $140,900 to $180,000, active Utah Bar required, Salt Lake City, not remote. A district judge’s FY2026 salary of $219,250 under HB 8 is a different public instrument again; the Court of Appeals sits at $230,200 and a Supreme Court justice at $241,200, each a statutory multiple of the district figure. Salt Lake City’s own Attorney’s Office describes the City Attorney as similar to the internal general counsel of a large private corporation. That analogy is the point: municipal GC work is company work on a public payroll.
Most company lawyers in Utah sit on ordinary active licenses, not the House Counsel ticket.
The 2026 demand is a statute stack, not a class-year raise.
A specialized commercial court, an AI consumer-protection act with a 2027 sunset, a privacy statute that only the Attorney General enforces, and a venture rebound are why the statewide table is the right instrument this year.
The Business and Chancery Court opened on 1 October 2024 at the Matheson Courthouse in Salt Lake City, created by 2023 House Bill 216, with statewide limited jurisdiction over complex commercial disputes and one appointed judge. Eligible matters include claims of at least $300,000 or solely equitable relief across contract, internal affairs, mergers, trade secrets, blockchain, UCC, securities, antitrust, noncompetes and franchise. There are no jury trials in that court; a defendant jury demand moves the case out. Filing fees are $375 plus a $500 BCC fee. The Judicial Council’s 2026 annual recorded more than 100 filings since opening. Hiring consequence: mid-to-senior commercial litigators in Salt Lake firm seats, not a volume consumer-litigation wave, and not a New York lockstep story.
The Utah Artificial Intelligence Policy Act took effect on 1 May 2024 and was narrowed effective 7 May 2025. The repeal date moved to 1 July 2027. Disclosure now turns on a clear request plus proactive disclosure only for high-risk interactions; there is no private right of action; the Division of Consumer Protection may assess $2,500 per violation. The Utah Consumer Privacy Act has been in force since 31 Dec 2023 against for-profit controllers with annual revenue of $25 million or more that process personal data of 100,000-plus Utah consumers, or that derive more than half of revenue from selling personal data and process 25,000-plus. Attorney general exclusive enforcement; 30-day cure; civil penalties up to $7,500 per violation; no private right of action. Those two statutes put privacy and consumer-protection work on in-house desks at companies above the thresholds, and on the AG’s Public Protection shop, not on a plaintiff-side boom.
Water and energy are the other live books. On 27 March 2025 the Third District denied, in substantial part, motions to dismiss the Great Salt Lake public-trust case; the Attorney General retained outside counsel by emergency procurement on 19 June 2025 after two state attorneys on the matter gave notice they were leaving. H.B. 392, signed 13 February 2026, lets the state reassign covered civil actions to a three-judge panel. On the power side, 2025 H.B. 249 created a Utah Energy Council and energy development zones; introduced S.B. 132 would require large-load customers to pay incremental generation, transmission and interconnection costs, with the chapter sunsetting for new service commencing after 31 December 2034. PitchBook’s 2025 Utah deal value of $1.86 billion, already cited, is the corporate counterpart: late-stage and growth took about 40 percent of invested capital, and the $5 to $25 million band was the thinnest in nearly a decade, which does not support a broad junior-associate wave.
Court and statuteCapital and games
- Commercial court and privacy A one-judge chancery bench in Salt Lake, an AI act with a 2027 sunset, and an AG-only privacy statute on $25 million controllers. Specialist seats, not a first-year boom.
- Water and large loads Public-trust litigation that survived dismissal, a three-judge-panel statute, and a large-load architecture that runs through 2034. Mid-to-senior project and natural-resources counsel.
- Cyclical capital, long-cycle games A 2025 venture rebound and a 2034 Winter Games host election. Corporate and procurement counsel on different clocks. Neither is a reason to import lockstep as the Utah median.
Federal entry-level public seats moved the other way. NALP recorded a January 2025 federal hiring freeze, federal employment of the Class of 2025 down 37 percent, and public-interest employment down 14 percent, the first public-interest decline since 2016. Quinney’s Class of 2025 posted zero federal clerkships against two in the Class of 2024. Pressure landed on the state AG, county desks and private practice, which is another reason the AG grade table belongs on this page and the Cravath ladder does not.
The federal docket in this district moved up, not down. Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts Table C for the year ending 30 September 2025 put District of Utah civil filings at 1,406 against 1,245 the year before, up 12.9 percent, with pending civil cases at 1,653 against 1,457. Table D put criminal filings at 584 against 521, up 12.1 percent. That is work for the United States Attorney’s Office and for the firms that sit across from it. It is not a reason to price a Salt Lake in-house seat off a Manhattan class year.
The long clock is the Games. The International Olympic Committee elected Salt Lake City-Utah host of the 2034 Winter Games on 24 July 2024. Municipal, procurement, construction, real-estate, branding and labor counsel for the organizing committee, the city, the county and venue owners will hire on a 2025–2034 cycle. That is senior project counsel. It is the same horizon as the large-load chapter. Neither clock is a 2026 first-year lockstep story: the demand sits in Salt Lake and along the Wasatch Front, priced on the table above.
Set the percentile, then set the credential, then run the clock.
A Utah offer fails in three places: the number is a New York photocopy, the license cannot do the work, or the committee cannot leave lockstep once the candidate already has.
Rule 4-705, effective 1 May 2025, is the conversion hinge a general counsel actually controls. Admission by motion is not a right. The applicant must show, among other things, 36 of the prior 60 months in the full-time practice of law in a reciprocal jurisdiction. Time practicing at an office located in Utah generally does not count, except to the extent the lawyer complied with Rule 5.5 or Rule 14-803. House Counsel time in Utah does count. Processing takes a minimum of four months. The application fee is $850; the MPRE scaled score is 86. Bar year 2023–24 recorded 152 motion applications. A company can hire an out-of-state lawyer onto House Counsel, put them to work on the employer’s business, and plan a motion application without wasting the Utah years. They still cannot send that lawyer into a Utah courtroom on the limited ticket.
House Counsel itself is Rule 4-719: no bar examination, character and fitness still required, current active license in another U.S. jurisdiction, employment exclusively as house counsel for a non-governmental entity whose business is not the practice of law, Utah residence or a Utah house-counsel office, filing within six months of accepting the position, employer affidavit. Scope is the employer’s business only. That is the on-ramp. It is not full admission.
Limited ticketCourt-facing admission
- House Counsel No exam. Employer affidavit. No court appearance. The years now count toward a later motion application, which is the 2025 change that makes this ticket usable as a plan rather than a dead end.
- Motion Thirty-six of sixty months, four months of processing, reciprocity, MPRE. The general counsel who needs courtroom capacity should start this clock the week the offer is signed, not the week the complaint is filed.
- Full active Exam, UBE transfer, or completed motion. Required for the AG bulletin, for the BCC, for the District of Utah, and for any seat that may have to stand up in the Third District.
Open the OEWS table before you open a lockstep memorandum. Then decide whether the seat needs a courtroom.
- Write the metro cell in. A Salt Lake commercial seat and a St. George municipal seat are not the same number with a cost-of-living footnote.
- Name the desk. In-house, national-office firm, regional firm, or public grade. Only the national-office firm tier has any business being in a conversation about $225,000 first-year cash.
- Decide court work on day one. If the lawyer may have to appear, House Counsel is the wrong ticket. If they will not, it is a usable on-ramp and the years now count.
- Budget the counter-offer. Companies defending a Utah in-house offer against a national-office firm will see the same reflex the New York associate book already records. The percentile table is the answer, not a matching bonus.
- Do not wait for the sandbox. It is closed to new applicants and sunsets in August 2027. The seat you need is a JD seat.
Your reservation wage is not a Manhattan class year unless you are sitting in a national-office seat that actually pays one.
- Read the specialist band first. $212,230 is the 75th percentile in this state. $225,000 first-year lockstep sits above it. An in-house offer near the 75th is not a discount; it is the table.
- Know which ticket you hold. Ordinary active, House Counsel, or a motion in flight. Court work is the fork, and it is not a title question.
- Price public grades as published. Grade I at $121,500 is a real starting number on a 17 October 2025 bulletin. It is not a failed private-practice outcome; it is a different desk.
- Watch the motion clock. Converting House Counsel into full admission takes a minimum of four months under Rule 4-705. The rule does not move faster because a company has a trial date.
- Treat those years as a credential. National-office years travel. The cash number they were attached to in New York does not, unless the new seat is the same tier.
We have worked the New York associate market for more than ten years, for law firms and for companies taking lawyers onto their own payroll. Over the trailing three years we closed 33 associate searches at a 93 percent completion rate, on a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks, with a median of 11 working days from offer to signature. Of those 33 files, 9 involved a candidate comparing a non-New York office or a Mountain West in-house move to the published first-year lockstep number. 6 of those 9 stalled past 12 weeks because the hiring committee would not leave the lockstep frame after the candidate had already named a number inside a regional band. Completion still printed at 93 percent. Those six ate the tail of the timeline. That is the finding that does not flatter us: we can close the file and still waste a quarter because the brief was written on the wrong table.
Three composites, anonymized, from that book. A nonprofit integrated health system on the Wasatch Front opened a senior corporate counsel brief at a lockstep year-four floor; we took the committee back to the statewide 75th, closed in nine weeks, and the candidate who would have rejected the photocopy accepted the percentile. The complication was not scarcity. It was a board memo that had copied a Manhattan scale into a Salt Lake requisition, and a counter-offer from a national-office firm that the percentile table had already answered. A PE-backed mining and energy platform hiring its first in-house lawyer in Salt Lake wanted a New York-trained funds associate at New York cash; the work was Utah water, large-load contracts and a panel of local firms, and the hire that stuck was a regional ENREL counsel priced inside the 75th, on an eleven-week clock, with House Counsel as the on-ramp and a motion application filed the week of signature. An Assistant Attorney General Grade III seat at $134,300 drew a national-firm Salt Lake associate who had been treating $225,000 as a floor; once the public grade, the courtroom scope and the 40 percent brief-load increase in Criminal Appeals were the brief, the comparison to lockstep stopped being the point. The lawyer who earns the figure and the office that pays it were finally reading the same table.
Quarterly surveys have run since 2019, and the global mapping sits at nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles. Utah is not a mapped Sartori city. The proprietary read on this page is from the lockstep market that misprices it, set against the public table the state actually pays. We will not invent a Utah interview cohort to look better-covered than we are. The OEWS cells, the bar census and the printed public grades are the instruments. Our New York associate telemetry is the record of what happens when a committee refuses to use them.
Companies building the function rather than filling a seat should start with how to run a general counsel search and the in-house counsel recruiting desk. Lawyers weighing the cash against the hours can put the New York photocopy back on the lockstep scale page where it belongs, and read this one as the Utah table.
Questions on Utah lawyer pay in 2026
How much do lawyers make in Utah in 2026?
The May 2025 BLS OEWS median for Utah lawyers is $132,830, against a U.S. median of $159,670. The statewide 10th-to-90th band runs from $59,990 to $347,090, and the mean is $169,480 on about 7,020 wage-and-salary jobs, as the Bureau of Labor Statistics published through O*NET and as reprinted for the mean and employment cells on 20 July 2026. That table is what a general counsel matching this state actually needs. Cravath’s 2026 first-year base of $225,000, announced 19 November 2025, sits above Utah’s 75th percentile of $212,230: lockstep is the upper tail here, not the middle.
What does a Salt Lake City lawyer earn compared with Provo, Ogden or St. George?
Salt Lake City-Murray’s May 2025 median is $136,990; Logan’s is $103,120, a $33,870 spread inside one state. Between them sit Provo-Orem-Lehi at $130,370, Ogden at $124,390 and St. George at $117,490, all from the same BLS OEWS vintage published through O*NET. Salt Lake County plus Tooele County is the wage center. A general counsel posting one statewide number will overpay a St. George seat and underpay a Salt Lake commercial one.
What does the Utah Attorney General pay assistant attorneys?
The State of Utah posted Assistant Attorney General Grade I starting pay at $121,500 on 17 October 2025. Grade II (bar years 2020–2022) starts at $127,700, Grade III at $134,300, and Grade IV at $140,900 to $180,000, on a Salt Lake City, not-remote bulletin that requires an active Utah State Bar membership. Those grades sit near the statewide OEWS median, not near New York lockstep. A district judge’s FY2026 salary is $219,250 under HB 8, which is a different instrument again.
Is New York lockstep the right benchmark for a Utah in-house hire?
No. Cravath’s 2026 first-year base of $225,000 sits above Utah’s 75th percentile of $212,230. Across 1,675 structured interviews with New York partners and counsel, 286 of 412 associates and counsel who had reviewed a Mountain West or Intermountain in-house or regional-firm offer over a 24-month window still priced the Utah number as a discount from lockstep. That is the discard this page exists to correct. Use the statewide percentile table, then the metro cell, then the desk (in-house, firm or public).
How long does a Utah legal search take once the number is set?
Sartori’s New York associate desk closes typical searches in 6 to 12 weeks; Utah admission by motion takes at least four months. The two clocks are not the same. A general counsel who has not decided whether the seat needs court work has not finished the brief, because House Counsel time now counts toward motion admission under Rule 4-705, effective 1 May 2025, but House Counsel still cannot appear in Utah courts.
Does an in-house lawyer in Utah need a full state bar license?
Not always. The limited House Counsel license lets a company lawyer practice without a Utah bar exam, but they cannot appear in Utah courts. Bar year 2023–24 recorded 144 active In House Counsel licenses against 932 Corporate Counsel section enrollments: most company lawyers sit on ordinary active licenses. Admission by motion requires 36 of the prior 60 months in the full-time practice of law, takes a minimum of four months, and, since 1 May 2025, counts House Counsel time in Utah toward that period.
BLS OEWS, the Utah State Bar, printed public grades, and the statute stack.
Wage cells come from the May 2025 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey. License counts come from the Bar's 2023-24 year in review. Public pay comes from the State's own bulletin and the judiciary's FY26 compensation bulletin. Demand comes from enrolled acts, court reports and a dated PitchBook extract.

OEWS measures wage-and-salary payroll for SOC 23-1011 and excludes most self-employed lawyers and equity partners. The 7,020 employment cell and $169,480 mean are BLS figures reprinted on 20 July 2026 because the DOL wage page is silent on those two cells; percentiles are taken from O*NET. Bar license counts are 2023-24 statuses, including out-of-state actives, and are not the same population as OEWS jobs. The Bar Journal's 5,850 employed-lawyer figure is an earlier BLS vintage and is not spliced with 7,020. Cravath $225,000 is a 2026 first-year base for contrast, not a Utah scale. Dorsey 80 is a 31 March 2022 snapshot. House Counsel 144 is a limited-license count, not an in-house census.
Interview-cohort, mandate-telemetry, counter-offer and offer-to-acceptance figures come from the continuous research program on our research page. Reference city is New York, associate line; Utah is the market this article prices.
