Lawyer Salary in Vermont 2026: the year inside every cell.

Vermont still prices Burlington and Montpelier seats off dated 2026 bar and fee-schedule rules, not last year's national lockstep. The Attorney Pay Plan in force from 12 July 2026, Administrative Order 4, and the 2026 admissions tariff are the table a general counsel matching this state actually needs.

The year sits inside the cell. The lockstep does not.

A general counsel asking about lawyer salary Vermont is usually handed last year's national lockstep. Sartori maps roughly 67,000 lawyers in New York; that file is the photocopy. The cells in force this year — the Attorney Pay Plan from 12 July 2026, Administrative Order 4, and the 2026 bar-fee schedule — are the table that actually prices Burlington and Montpelier seats.

02 The 2026 table

The 2026 lawyer salary Vermont table is a pay plan, not a lockstep.

A general counsel matching this state opens the Attorney Pay Plan, then Administrative Order 4, then the bar-fee schedule. Last year's national median is context, not the offer letter.

The Vermont Department of Human Resources Attorney Pay Plan for FY 2026, effective 13 July 2025 to 30 June 2026, priced a newly admitted Staff Attorney I at a hiring floor of $59,384, a hiring maximum of $74,214 and a grade maximum of $83,096. Staff Attorney II (two to five years) ran $70,637 / $88,067 / $94,848. Staff Attorney III (five to eight years) ran $84,178 / $100,880 / $112,674. Staff Attorney IV and General Counsel I (eight-plus years) ran $96,450 / $107,682 / $134,098. General Counsel II hiring started at $108,597. Admitted clerks sat at $55,099; un-admitted clerks at $51,938. Supervision added up to $1,500 for one to three attorneys or $2,000 for four or more. New appointees could not be offered above the hiring-range minimum without Department of Human Resources or Governor’s-designee approval.

The FY 2027 plan, posted 12 June 2026 and effective 12 July 2026 to 30 June 2027, is the cell that prices a 2026–27 Montpelier or Waterbury seat today. From 12 July 2026, Staff Attorney I is $60,570 / $75,691 / $84,760; from 10 January 2027 it is $61,776 / $77,210 / $86,466. Staff Attorney IV and General Counsel I move from $98,384 / $109,845 / $136,781 to $100,360 / $112,050 / $139,526 on the January step. General Counsel II hiring is $110,760 then $112,986. Those are exempt Executive-Branch attorney cells — Assistant Attorneys General, agency counsel, embedded AAGs — not a private-firm scale.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, last modified 27 August 2026, puts the May 2025 national lawyer median at $159,670, with the lowest tenth below $78,360 and the highest tenth above $351,600. Industry medians in the same vintage: federal government $178,380; legal services $157,870; local government $131,390; state government $115,330. Vermont’s Staff Attorney I hiring floor from 12 July 2026 is 37.9 percent of that national median. The Staff Attorney IV / General Counsel I maximum of $136,781 is 85.7 percent of it, and sits above the national state-government lawyer median of $115,330. That arithmetic is the first fact a compensation committee should write down.

Of the same New York interview cohort, 248 of 390 associates and counsel who had reviewed a New England in-house or regional-firm offer over a 24-month window priced a Vermont number as a discount from lockstep rather than as a dated public cell. It is the discard, measured. A general counsel at a New York-headquartered manufacturer with a Vermont operations seat put it in budget language: the compensation committee wanted a lockstep year-three floor for a Burlington commercial-counsel hire that would never see those hours. We reset the brief to the Staff Attorney III / General Counsel I band and the search moved.

BLS Occupational Employment and Wages in Burlington-South Burlington for May 2025, News Release 26-920-BOS dated 15 June 2026 and reissued 24 June 2026, puts the legal major group at a mean hourly wage of $58.42 against $67.07 nationally, and at 0.8 percent of local employment, the same share as the United States. Annualized on BLS’s 2,080-hour convention that is about $121,514, or 76.1 percent of the national lawyer median. The release does not publish a lawyers-only (SOC 23-1011) wage. Treat $58.42 as the legal occupational group, not as a Burlington associate scale. A statewide 2025 lawyer median sits in Vermont Department of Labor workbooks that were not opened as tables for this article, so it is omitted rather than borrowed.

Lockstep is not a Vermont published cell. The full eight-year ladder lives on our BigLaw associate salary scale for 2026. What belongs here is the comparison a Vermont general counsel actually has to make: is this seat a Staff Attorney I public hire, a General Counsel I analogue on a company payroll, or a genuine national-office secondment that happens to sit in Burlington. New Hampshire sits next door; its land-use and bar-admission architecture is a different product, and this page does not explain it.

The year sits inside every cell. Last year's national lockstep does not.

03 Who writes the check

Three desks pay a Vermont lawyer. Only one of them looks like a company GC.

The State writes most of the printed checks. A handful of in-house buyers write the rest. Regional firms sit beside both, without a published 2026 lockstep for this state.

Start with the company desk, because that is half of who this page is for. GlobalFoundries’ Essex Junction fab, announced on 1 March 2024 as the recipient of $125 million in CHIPS modernization plus $4.5 million toward high-volume GaN manufacturing, employs about 1,800 people and holds a DMEA Trusted Foundry accreditation for Department of Defense chips. The global chief legal officer sits at corporate, not as a Vermont GC title. The site still generates commercial-agreements, government-contracts, environmental, export-control and land-use work that is either in-house at the fab or bought from Burlington firms. University of Vermont Health, the rural academic system anchored at the Medical Center on Colchester Avenue, reports more than 14,000 people including 1,900 physicians and advanced practice providers, with Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin on the Montpelier labor market. National Life Group is the Montpelier-rooted life-insurer and annuity carrier whose regulatory counterpart is the Department of Financial Regulation. Those three buyers — foundry, health system, life insurer — are the in-house payrolls a chief legal officer actually staffs in this state.

Of the same New York interview cohort, 54 of 88 respondents who had hired for or sat in a New England in-house desk over a 24-month window said their compensation committee first asked for the New York number. The committee question is the discard, arriving from the buyer side. A head of legal at a nonprofit health system with a Burlington campus said the board memo arrived with a Manhattan year-four floor attached to a reimbursement-and-privacy counsel seat that would never bill those hours. The printed analogue is General Counsel I, not a class year.

The public desk is the one with printed grades, and it is the largest single legal employer. The Attorney General’s Office lists about 147 positions and 97 Assistant Attorneys General: 93 on AGO payroll and 54 embedded at the Agency of Human Services (all six departments), the Agency of Transportation, Tax, Buildings and General Services, Education, and Agriculture. Five legal divisions cover environmental and public protection, civil, human services, general counsel and administrative law, and criminal (including Medicaid fraud). Ballotpedia, citing the FY 2026 as-passed figure, puts the AGO appropriation at $17,358,505 and the elected Attorney General’s 2025 statutory salary at $177,954 under 32 V.S.A. § 1003, above the Staff Attorney IV / GC I maximum. AAG pay itself sits on the Attorney Pay Plan, not on that statutory cell.

Fourteen elected State’s Attorney offices sit under the Department of State’s Attorneys and Sheriffs, with Chittenden at 32 Cherry Street in Burlington — the same Costello Courthouse complex as Attorney Licensing — and Washington County in Barre. The April 2025 SAS memorandum to Senate Judiciary recorded about 23,500 pending cases, 99 percent of Vermont criminal files, and about 365 cases per State’s Attorney and Deputy. A Chittenden Deputy State’s Attorney posting states the DSA pay plan at $31.75 to $62.87 an hour based on relevant legal experience. Vermont Legal Aid staffs Burlington, Montpelier, Rutland and Springfield; Legal Services Vermont intake sits on North Winooski Avenue. Those are staff-attorney seats, not partnership-track seats.

The Office of the Defender General runs a hybrid: staff public defenders plus performance-based contractors paid on historical caseload. The FY 2027 solicitation, commencing 1 July 2026, listed known conflict-counsel openings in Bennington, Chittenden, Lamoille, Rutland and Windham, with a resume deadline of 8 May 2026 and an Assigned Counsel Coordinator list updated 23 July 2026. Contractors need current Vermont admission and $500,000 professional-liability cover per occurrence. Dollar retainers are not published on the contractor pages, so they are omitted. Ad-hoc assigned counsel not under contract remains on Administrative Order 4’s $100 cell.

Department of Financial Regulation legal staff sit in the Commissioner’s administrative office beside four operating divisions — Banking, Captive Insurance, Insurance, Securities. The Public Utility Commission is a three-member body on siting and rates; the Land Use Review Board administers Act 250 independent of the Agency of Natural Resources. Those Montpelier regulator seats are continuity products in 2026, with a data-broker and genetic overlay from the session bills, not a shock hire.

Firm-side is the minority buyer on this page, and it is the only place a lockstep conversation is even a local temptation. Downs Rachlin Martin publishes five offices, Burlington the largest, with a Montpelier government-and-public-affairs desk at 52 State Street. Gravel & Shea is Burlington-based, with Act 250 District Commission, Environmental Division and municipal DRB work on its land-use page. Primmer Piper Eggleston & Cramer leads with healthcare and commercial. Dinse spotlights education, healthcare, and food and beverage as outside general counsel to growth-stage Vermont companies. Those names confirm practice labels. They do not publish a 2026 associate scale on the pages opened for this article, and this page will not invent one.

04 The 2026 ticket

Bar fees, a provisional license, and a first-year tax still price the seat.

A newly admitted Burlington associate or Staff Attorney I carries a dated 2026 licensing cost before the first paycheck. Employers who want 2026 start dates use motion, transfer, or, from 1 July, provisional licensure.

The National Conference of Bar Examiners Vermont jurisdiction chart, face-dated 11 September 2026, lists a $300 bar-exam application fee plus character and fitness, $525 for admission by transferred UBE score, and $800 for admission on motion, again plus character and fitness. Legacy UBE passing score is 270; NextGen is 620. MPRE minimum is 80. Attempt limit is four. Transferred UBE scores age out at three years or five. Motion practice requires five of the past ten years, or the past three. An ABA-approved J.D. is not required: law-office study and certain non-ABA and foreign paths exist. Courtesy seating: no.

The Vermont Judiciary admission page puts the July 2026 UBE on 28–29 July 2026 at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel Burlington, South Burlington, application deadline 15 April 2026. February 2027 is 23–24 February at the same hotel, deadline 15 November 2026. Vermont first accepts transferred NextGen scores in July 2026, last sits the legacy UBE in February 2027, and first administers NextGen in Vermont in July 2027, a decision taken at the January 2024 administrative meeting. Exam admittees must complete a 15-hour Vermont-specific CLE and a mentorship with a Vermont-licensed attorney within the first year. The Office of Attorney Licensing sits at Costello Courthouse, 32 Cherry Street, Suite 213, Burlington. Foreign-equivalency application is $50, plus $250 if an expert report is required.

Administrative Order 41 section 19, promulgated 6 January 2026 and effective 1 July 2026, is the supply-side rule that actually shortens time-to-desk this year. Applicants already licensed in another U.S. jurisdiction, in good standing, not under disciplinary suspension, and determined eligible by the Board of Bar Examiners may practice fully in Vermont while Character and Fitness finishes. They must eFile a certification and submit to Vermont professional-conduct rules. The license ends on full admission, withdrawal, denial, or loss of eligibility. Companion amendments to Rules of Admission 21–24 confine “Legal Intern” to law students, Law Office Study participants, and applicants not admitted elsewhere. A general counsel hiring a lateral AAG, Deputy State’s Attorney, or in-house counsel who already holds another bar can put that lawyer on the file in July 2026 without waiting out Character and Fitness. First-year exam admittees still owe the CLE and mentorship.

Filing fees still in force under 32 V.S.A. § 1431 are the docket price of opening a Vermont file, not attorney compensation, but they are part of the 2026 tariff a company counsel actually sees. Supreme Court entry is $295. Civil Division filing is $295; a subsequent claim-for-relief pleading $120; a counterclaim $90. Environmental Division filing is $295. Family divorce without stipulation is $295. Small claims are $65 or $90. Probate estate filing scales from $50 to $3,250. Judicial Bureau filing is $65. The legislature sets most of those fees; the Supreme Court sets the rest.

05 What moved the table

The 2026 demand is a Montpelier statute stack, not a class-year raise.

Land-use tiers, a privacy act that is not yet in force, a closed Clean Heat docket, and a foundry modernization are why Burlington and Montpelier seats exist or vanish this year.

Act 181 of 2024 and Act 152 of 2026 moved Act 250 onto a full-time five-member Land Use Review Board with expertise in planning, development, environmental science and law. The Board’s own modernization page lists interim Act 250 housing exemptions through mid-2028, Board review of regional plans and Future Land Use maps, Tiers 1A and 1B with limited or no Act 250 jurisdiction in growth-capacity areas, and a simplified Designation Program. Regional plans run through autumn 2026. Hiring consequence: LURB staff-attorney and hearing-officer seats in Montpelier; applicant-side land-use counsel at Burlington firms appearing before District Commissions, the Environmental Division and municipal DRBs; Agency of Natural Resources and Department of Environmental Conservation counsel on the agency side.

S.325, signed 16 June 2026, is the partial repeal. VTDigger that day recorded the Governor’s signature striking the “road rule” — an Act 250 trigger for private-road construction over 800 feet — and eliminating Tier 3 before either took effect. What remains is the deregulatory side: Tier 1A and 1B permit exemptions to speed housing in already-developed areas. Do not staff a road-rule specialty. Do staff the maps, the remaining Act 250 work, and the housing-exemption window through mid-2028.

The same week produced Act 145, the Vermont Data Privacy and Online Surveillance Act, signed 16 June 2026 and effective 1 January 2028. The IAPP, on 17 June 2026, counted it as the 23rd state comprehensive privacy law. It applies to controllers that do business in Vermont or target Vermont residents and, in the prior year, process personal data of 35,000 or more consumers, sensitive data of 3,000 or more, or sell personal data of 3,000 or more. Consumer health-data rules apply with no threshold. Exclusive Attorney General enforcement; no private right of action; civil penalties up to $10,000 per violation; a mandatory 60-day cure from 1 January 2028 through 30 June 2029. Privacy notices must disclose whether data is used to train large language models. IAPP put the 35,000-consumer threshold at about 5.4 percent of state population. 2026–27 is the build year for notices, DSAR processes and vendor contracts at foundries, health systems, insurers and retailers — Burlington and Montpelier commercial and privacy associates, not plaintiff-side class-action seats. Neighboring-state privacy is a Connecticut-style framework; this page does not explain Connecticut’s statute.

Two narrower 2026 bills sit on the same privacy-and-health stack. DRM’s 11 June 2026 legislative update records H.814 as stating neurological rights over neural data and freedom of thought, and as extending the AI Advisory Council through 2030 with a study of AI in health care, education, insurance, human services and government. H.816 prohibits AI systems from independently providing mental-health treatment without a qualified professional; licensed providers may use AI tools if they remain responsible. Hiring consequence: health-system in-house at the Burlington campus, Department of Financial Regulation insurance counsel, and professional-regulation counsel — 2026 study and rulemaking, not a mass hire. H.639, the Genetic Information Privacy Act, signed 15 June 2026 and in force 1 July 2026, is the immediate AGO consumer-protection overlay on direct-to-consumer testing companies selling into Vermont.

Land use and privacyCapital and the residual file

  1. Maps and notices Tier 1A/1B and Future Land Use maps through autumn 2026; Act 145 notices and vendor contracts through 2027. Specialist seats, not a first-year boom.
  2. A closed energy docket Clean Heat wound down in February 2026. Ordinary PUC siting and rate work remains. Do not hire the statute that did not authorize.
  3. CHIPS and the $100 file Essex Junction modernization still executing. Assigned counsel still at $100 an hour. One is a government-contracts principal; the other is a trial contractor.

The Public Utility Commission archived the Clean Heat Standard file on 15 January 2025 and closed the cases in February 2026 after the General Assembly declined to authorize the Act 18 rule. 30 V.S.A. § 8131 already said the Commission shall not file implementing rules without specific authorization. That removes a multi-year PUC rulemaking, Default Delivery Agent and fuel-dealer-registry docket that would have needed energy regulatory counsel at the Commission, the Department of Public Service, obligated fuel dealers and Burlington energy firms. Remaining energy work is ordinary net-metering, siting and rate cases. The Global Warming Solutions Act 2030 benchmark still sits as climate-litigation risk at the AGO and ANR. Do not treat Clean Heat as a live hiring driver.

Administrative Order 4, § 6(a), still pays court-assigned counsel not under Defender General contract $100 an hour for services after 1 July 2023. Case maxima: misdemeanor $1,000; major felony not involving life or death, or termination of parental rights, $5,000; felonies involving possible life imprisonment or death $25,000; minor felonies or juvenile matters $2,000; Supreme Court appeals $2,000. The Reporter’s Notes record that the prior $50 rate had stood since 1993. Federal CJA non-capital work in the same Burlington courthouse is $177 from 1 January 2026, capital $226, with an appellate maximum of $9,800. Assigned counsel at $100 is 56.5 percent of that CJA cell. The public-defense buyer cannot always clear conflicts at staff rates; private Burlington and Montpelier trial lawyers take contractor or $100 ad-hoc work. The $177 federal file pulls the same trial bar toward the U.S. District Court.

Underneath those legal desks, QCEW first-quarter 2026 covered employment in Vermont was 304,200 in March 2026, down 1.0 percent year over year. Chittenden County, the Burlington MSA core, was 100,700 jobs, down 1.8 percent, at an average weekly wage of $1,521 against a U.S. $1,654. Washington County, the Montpelier labor market, averaged $1,400 a week. Statewide average weekly wage was $1,322. That is all-industry covered employment, released 4 September 2026, not a lawyer series. Corporate and real-estate laterals may slow with it. Public and legal-aid desks are appropriation-driven and do not automatically track QCEW. The American Bar Association, on 8 December 2025, named Vermont among the states with the largest year-on-year percentage decline in resident active lawyers; the news release does not publish a Vermont headcount, so none is quoted here.

The federal criminal docket in Burlington is a 2026 cycle of its own. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Vermont, in press listed through August and September 2026, is charging fentanyl and cocaine trafficking, child-exploitation materials, interstate threats, unlawful reentry and attempted robbery. That is AUSA and CJA-panel demand on narcotics and exploitation, sitting in the same city as the $177 non-capital cell. It does not rewrite the Attorney Pay Plan. It does pull trial-capable lawyers toward the federal courthouse when the state assigned-counsel file still pays $100.

06 Matching the offer

Set the dated cell, then set the credential, then run the clock.

A Vermont offer fails in three places: the number is a New York photocopy, the license cannot do the work, or the committee cannot leave lockstep once the candidate already has.

We have worked the New York associate market for more than ten years, for law firms and for companies taking lawyers onto their own payroll. Over the trailing three years we closed 33 associate searches at a 94 percent completion rate, on a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks, with a median of 11 working days from offer to signature. That eleven-day window is the firm’s associate-line figure, not a Vermont Character and Fitness forecast: a general counsel who signs on day eleven still waits on the Board of Bar Examiners unless the hire already holds another bar and can use the 1 July 2026 provisional license. Of those 33 files, 8 involved a candidate comparing a non-New York office or a New England in-house move to a published lockstep number. 5 of those 8 stalled past 12 weeks because the hiring committee would not leave the lockstep frame after the candidate had already named a number inside a regional or public band. Completion still printed at 94 percent. Those five ate the tail of the timeline. That is the finding that does not flatter us: we can close the file and still waste a quarter because the brief was written on the wrong table.

Open the Attorney Pay Plan before you open a lockstep memorandum. Then decide whether the seat needs a courtroom.

  • Write the dated cell in. A Montpelier Staff Attorney III and a Burlington foundry commercial counsel are not the same number with a cost-of-living footnote.
  • Name the desk. In-house, regional firm, or public grade. Only a national-office secondment has any business being in a conversation about lockstep cash.
  • Decide court work on day one. If the lawyer may have to appear, motion or exam admission is the ticket. If they already hold another bar, AO 41 section 19 is the 1 July 2026 on-ramp.
  • Budget the counter-offer. Companies defending a Vermont in-house offer against a lockstep reservation wage will see the same reflex the New York associate book already records at 37 percent. The dated cell is the answer, not a matching bonus.
  • Do not staff closed dockets. Clean Heat is wound down. The road rule never took effect. Act 145 is a 2028 statute with a 2026–27 build.

Your reservation wage is not a Manhattan class year unless you are sitting in a seat that actually pays one.

  • Read the public analogue first. $136,781 is the General Counsel I maximum from 12 July 2026. An in-house offer near that cell is not a discount; it is the printed table.
  • Know which ticket you hold. Exam, transferred UBE, motion, or provisional from 1 July 2026. Court work is the fork, and it is not a title question.
  • Price public grades as published. Staff Attorney I at $60,570 is a real starting number on a plan posted 12 June 2026. It is not a failed private-practice outcome; it is a different desk.
  • Watch the two hourly clocks. $100 assigned counsel and $177 CJA are both 2026 Burlington trial rates. They are not interchangeable, and the case maxima on the state side still cap the year.
  • Treat those years as a credential. National-office years travel. The cash number they were attached to in New York does not, unless the new seat is the same tier.

Three composites, anonymized, from that book. A nonprofit academic health system on the Burlington campus opened a privacy-and-reimbursement counsel brief at a lockstep year-four floor in the Act 145 build year; we took the committee back to the General Counsel I analogue, closed in ten weeks, and the candidate who would have rejected the photocopy accepted the dated cell. The complication was not scarcity. It was a board memo that had copied a Manhattan scale into a Vermont requisition, and a counter-offer framed as lockstep that the Pay Plan had already answered. A CHIPS-era manufacturer hiring commercial and government-contracts counsel at an Essex Junction fab wanted a New York-trained technology associate at New York cash; the work was Commerce-conditioned contracts, EHS upgrades and Act 250 overlays, and the hire that stuck was an eight-plus-year government-contracts counsel priced inside the Staff Attorney IV band, on an eleven-week clock, with AO 41 provisional licensure as the 1 July on-ramp. An Assistant Attorney General Staff Attorney II seat at the FY 27 floor drew a regional-firm Burlington associate who had been treating lockstep as a reservation wage; once the five-division AGO map, the 97-AAG shop and the $100 residual file were the brief, the comparison to a class year stopped being the point. The lawyer who earns the figure and the office that pays it were finally reading the same table.

Quarterly surveys have run since 2019, and the global mapping sits at nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles. Vermont is not a mapped Sartori city. The proprietary read on this page is from the lockstep market that misprices it, set against the public table the state actually pays. We will not invent a Vermont interview cohort to look better-covered than we are. The Pay Plan cells, Administrative Order 4, the bar-fee schedule and the 2026 statute stack are the instruments. Our New York associate telemetry is the record of what happens when a committee refuses to use them.

Companies building the function rather than filling a seat should start with how to run a general counsel search and the in-house counsel recruiting desk. The method behind the New York figures is on the methodology page. Lawyers weighing the cash against the hours can put the New York photocopy back on the lockstep scale page where it belongs, and read this one as the Vermont table.

Questions on Vermont lawyer pay in 2026

What is the lawyer salary Vermont figure for 2026?

The dated public cell is $60,570 — the Staff Attorney I hiring floor in force from 12 July 2026. Vermont Department of Human Resources posted that floor on the FY 2027 Attorney Pay Plan, with a hiring maximum of $75,691 and a grade maximum of $84,760 until the 10 January 2027 step. It is not a statewide OEWS lawyer median, which this article does not quote, and it is not the May 2025 national lawyer median of $159,670 published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook. A general counsel matching a Montpelier or Burlington public seat opens this plan first. A company matching an in-house seat uses it as the published floor the rest of the market sits above, not as a New York class-year photocopy.

What is lawyer salary Burlington versus a Montpelier public seat?

Lawyer salary Burlington has no lawyers-only median. BLS Occupational Employment and Wages in Burlington-South Burlington for May 2025, released 15 June 2026, put the legal occupational group at a mean of $58.42 an hour — lawyers plus judges, paralegals and other legal occupations — against $67.07 nationally. Montpelier public seats print on the Attorney Pay Plan: Staff Attorney I starts at $60,570 from 12 July 2026; General Counsel I maxes at $136,781 on the same date. A Chittenden Deputy State’s Attorney posting states a DSA plan of $31.75 to $62.87 an hour. Those are three instruments, not one blended Burlington number.

What does in house counsel salary Burlington look like on a published cell?

In house counsel salary Burlington has no company band. The closest printed cells are General Counsel I and II on the State plan: GC I matches Staff Attorney IV at a $98,384 hiring floor and a $136,781 maximum from 12 July 2026; GC II hiring starts at $110,760. Those grades price embedded Assistant Attorneys General and agency counsel in Montpelier and Waterbury. A foundry, health-system or life-insurer desk in the Burlington MSA is a company payroll, not a published grade, and this page does not invent one.

What does attorney salary Burlington look like on assigned-counsel and federal cells?

Attorney salary Burlington on the residual public file is still $100 an hour under Administrative Order 4. The Vermont Supreme Court set that rate for services after 1 July 2023; no later increase was located. Federal Criminal Justice Act panel work in the District of Vermont pays $177 an hour for non-capital work from 1 January 2026, a 77 percent spread on the hourly cell. Case maxima on the state side still cap a misdemeanor file at $1,000 and a major felony at $5,000. The same Burlington trial bar sits on both clocks.

How long does a Vermont legal search take once the number is set?

Sartori’s New York associate desk closes typical searches in 6 to 12 weeks, with 11 working days from offer to signature. Vermont Character and Fitness is a second clock. Administrative Order 41 section 19, effective 1 July 2026, lets an already-licensed out-of-state admittee practice on a provisional license while that clock finishes. First-year exam admittees still owe a 15-hour Vermont CLE and a mentorship in year one. A general counsel who has not decided whether the seat needs courtroom work has not finished the brief.

Does a Vermont company lawyer need a full state bar license in 2026?

For court work, yes: exam, transferred UBE score, or motion. From 1 July 2026 a lawyer already licensed elsewhere, in good standing, may practice on a provisional license under Administrative Order 41 section 19 while Character and Fitness finishes. There is no courtesy seating. Motion admission requires five of the past ten years, or the past three, of practice. Exam admittees carry the 15-hour Vermont CLE and mentorship tax in year one. Defender General contractors also need $500,000 professional-liability cover per occurrence.

BLS Burlington $58.42 is the legal occupational group (SOC 23-0000) for May 2025, not a lawyers-only median.
