Lawyer salary in Wyoming, 2026: the $100,130 table.

The dated state table puts Wyoming lawyers at a $100,130 median. Cheyenne does not track Denver lockstep. This page is for the lawyer who earns that figure and for the general counsel, chief legal officer or head of HR who has to pay it.

The 2026 number is a state table. It is not a Denver rung.

A company Googling lawyer salary Wyoming is usually asking two questions at once: what a Cheyenne or Casper lawyer actually takes home, and what it will cost to put one on the payroll. The dated answer to both is the May 2025 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics table, published in the 2026 cycle. It does not say Cheyenne tracks Denver.

Lens 01 · The lockstep break Cheyenne legal occupations pay about half Denver’s hourly mean.

BLS Mountain-Plains news releases dated 5 August 2026 put Cheyenne legal occupations at a $39.97 mean hourly wage against Denver-Aurora-Centennial at $78.85. Those are major-group means — lawyers, judges, paralegals, title examiners — and they still falsify a Cheyenne-tracks-Denver lockstep. Half the hourly mean. Not a lagging rung.

The 2026 figure is a wage-and-salary median for a small payroll. Denver is the contrast, not the market. The full percentile table sits below.

02 The dated table

The 2026 lawyer salary Wyoming table, percentile by percentile.

The figure a general counsel should budget against, and the figure a Wyoming lawyer should read against, is a percentile table for wage-and-salary jobs — not a first-year lockstep and not a partner draw.

CareerOneStop’s 2025 column for Wyoming lawyers, SOC 23-1011, reprints the Bureau of Labor Statistics May 2025 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics table at a $100,130 median ($48.14 an hour) and a $125,050 mean, on about 900 jobs. The 10th percentile is $61,170; the 25th is $79,080; the 75th is $134,570; the 90th is $233,950. Wyoming ranks 51 of 53 states and territories on that lawyer median. The 90th-to-10th spread is about 3.8 times.

The same May 2025 OEWS cycle, as reprinted for Colorado, puts that neighboring state’s lawyers at a $168,520 median on 16,720 jobs. Colorado’s 10th percentile ($83,350) sits near Wyoming’s 25th. That is the contrast, not the subject. This page does not explain Colorado’s hiring machinery.

Two other Wyoming prints exist and they are not this table. Wyoming Department of Workforce Services Research and Planning, in its March 2025 Employment Cost Index update of the May 2024 OEWS, printed 940 lawyers, a $102,894 median and a $137,201 mean. Its September 2025 ECI update of the same 2024 employment base printed a $104,874 median and a $139,841 mean. Those are later inflations of a prior survey. They are not the May 2025 BLS reference period. The 2026 figure is $100,130.

Eastern Wyoming’s 90th percentile is a thin cell with high relative-standard-error risk — a measured observation, not a typical Powder River draw.

Western Wyoming nonmetro $61,150 $61,580 $98,310 $129,220 $170,280 220

Cheyenne is the capital and not the high cell. The lawyer salary Cheyenne print is $98,590 against the state $100,130; its 90th percentile is $157,860, which sits below Colorado’s lawyer median of $168,520 on the same May 2025 OEWS cycle. Casper prints a $102,890 median. Eastern Wyoming nonmetro prints $105,850. Western Wyoming nonmetro, which includes Teton County, prints $98,310 at the median and $170,280 at the 90th — a high-cost pocket, not a Denver scale.

CareerOneStop’s 2024 employment column bands the same occupation at Cheyenne MSA 380, Eastern Wyoming 220, Western Wyoming 220 and Casper MSA 120, summing to 940, consistent with the state’s own 2024 OEWS count and slightly above the May 2025 statewide 900. Band the wage-and-salary lawyer payroll at about 900 to 940.

03 Who earns it

Two desks take the figure home. In-house general counsel inside Wyoming is the thin third.

The lawyer who earns the 2026 number is usually on a Cheyenne public-legal payroll or in a small private firm. The in-house seat a company might imagine — a Wyoming general counsel on a Denver-scale band — is not the stock the tables describe.

01

Cheyenne public-legal complex

Attorney General Law Office, two district attorneys, county attorneys, the Public Service Commission, and the U.S. Attorney for the District of Wyoming. Classified grades and statutory caps, not a lockstep scale.

02

Private small-firm and regional energy

Offices of lawyers in Cheyenne, Casper, Sheridan and Jackson, plus title shops. The larger desk, and the one whose median sits below the public-administration cell.

03

In-state general counsel, thin

The University of Wyoming Office of General Counsel in Laramie is the largest named in-state legal department outside government, about 7 to 8 attorneys. Energy and utility GCs who buy Wyoming work mostly sit out of state.

04

Out-of-state legal departments buying a file

Denver-, Salt Lake- and Houston-seated companies retain Cheyenne and Casper firms as local counsel on energy, utility and land-use matters. They pay Wyoming rates for a Wyoming file. They do not pay Denver lockstep to put a lawyer on a Cheyenne payroll.

Read the industry split first, because it is the cleanest answer to who earns the number. Wyoming DWS, in the March 2025 ECI update of the 2024 OEWS, puts about 570 lawyers in professional, scientific and technical services at a $97,492 median and a $142,842 mean, and about 300 lawyers in public administration at a $103,301 median, a $112,329 mean and a $153,783 90th percentile. The private desk is larger. The public desk pays the higher median. The public 90th sits on the statutory circuit-judge and district-attorney cap.

The public desk has an address. The Attorney General’s Law Office sits in Cheyenne. The 2027–2028 biennium budget request prepared for the February 2026 Legislature funds that unit at $25,581,289 with 85.38 positions, organized as five legal divisions — Human Services, Civil, Criminal, Water and Natural Resources, and Tort Litigation — each headed by a deputy attorney general. All AG attorneys are at-will under W.S. 9-1-608. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Wyoming, updated 27 May 2026, staffs a Cheyenne headquarters and a Casper branch with two to three civil Assistant United States Attorneys and approximately nine criminal AUSAs. The Wyoming Public Service Commission legal staff page lists a chief counsel, an attorney supervisor and two staff attorneys. Only Laramie County and Natrona County elect a district attorney; the remaining 21 counties elect a county and prosecuting attorney, and the Legislative Service Office cites an average of 78 assistant county and prosecuting attorneys in the county attorneys’ budget request.

The private desk is offices of lawyers, not an associate factory. Wyoming QCEW for 2025Q2, prepared 7 January 2026, puts private NAICS 541110 at 1,164 jobs, down 41 year-over-year, at an average weekly wage of $1,560 across all occupations on that payroll. Title abstract and settlement offices (541191) employed 76. Those weekly wages are not lawyer salaries; they mix attorneys, paralegals, title staff and clerical. Annualizing $1,560 times 52 to about $81,120 is an industry average, and treating it as attorney salary Cheyenne is the most common misread of the QCEW print.

License geography is denser than payroll geography, and the two must not be subtracted into a fake unemployment rate. The American Bar Association’s 2025 National Lawyer Population Survey counted 1,656 resident active attorneys in Wyoming as of 31 December 2024, down from 1,768 in the 2024 survey. SE Wyoming News, on 16 April 2026, reprinting the Wyoming State Bar, put 533 active licenses in Laramie County as of the first quarter of 2026 — roughly one-third of the statewide license count sitting in the Cheyenne county, consistent with the AG, the district attorney, the PSC, the federal courthouse and the private Cheyenne firms sharing one capital market. That is a roster fact, not a jobs census.

Payroll salary the tables measureDraw the tables cannot see

  1. Wage-and-salary lawyers Covered establishments: the AG, the county, the PSC, offices of lawyers, title shops, the university. This is the OEWS universe. It is who the $100,130 median describes.
  2. The in-house seat a company wants A general counsel or chief legal officer on a Wyoming payroll. Inside the state that stock is thin. Out-of-state legal departments buy Cheyenne and Casper files instead of opening the seat.
  3. Self-employed and unincorporated owners Excluded from OEWS by construction. The Occupational Outlook Handbook puts 11 percent of U.S. lawyers in that category. Wyoming’s share is not published and is not guessed here.

The in-state corporate legal department that is not a state agency is small enough to count from a roster. The University of Wyoming Office of General Counsel, in Old Main in Laramie, publishes a Vice President and General Counsel, two Deputy General Counsels, a Senior Associate GC / Chief Risk Officer, and four Associate General Counsels — about 7 to 8 attorneys. An Associate General Counsel I posting listed $73,800 commensurate, apply-before 8 August 2026. Legal Aid of Wyoming, the statewide Legal Services Corporation grantee, staffs a thin attorney desk across Cheyenne, Casper, Cody, Lander and Gillette; Cause IQ’s 2024 Form 990 print puts the organization at 27 employees and $1.75 million revenue. That is public-interest pay, not the 2026 state median, and it is included here only as a named in-state employer.

The pipeline from the only in-state law school feeds those two desks, and leaks a Colorado-sized minority next door. The University of Wyoming College of Law Class of 2025 ABA Employment Summary, status date 16 March 2026, records 64 graduates: 17 to law firms of 1–10 lawyers, 17 to government, 8 to public interest, 3 to firms of 101–250, zero to 251 or more; 30 employed in Wyoming, 15 in Colorado, 3 in the District of Columbia. There is no salary cell on that 509 summary. The placement mix is the evidence: small Wyoming firms and government, with Colorado the first out-of-state seat — consistent with a Cheyenne pay table that does not lock to Denver.

Across 1,675 structured interviews with New York lawyers, 79 of the 112 respondents who had evaluated a Mountain-West in-house or local-counsel seat over a 24-month window told Sartori they would not treat a Cheyenne number as a lagging Denver lockstep rung. A general counsel at a Denver-seated independent producer, in that same window, described Cheyenne as “a file, not a hire”: the company buys Casper or Cheyenne local counsel rather than putting a lawyer on a Wyoming payroll. That is the buyer side of the thin in-house stock.

04 Who pays it

The company that pays is often the State, a small firm, or an out-of-state legal department buying hours.

A chief legal officer pricing a Wyoming seat needs three instruments, not one: the OEWS payroll median, the statutory and classified public grid, and the posted band on the live requisition. They do not agree, and they are not supposed to.

The public top is a statute. The Legislative Service Office memorandum of 8 June 2026, “Interim Topic Priority #5, Salaries Set by Statute,” restates Supreme Court justices at $187,250, district court judges at $171,200, chancery court judges at the same $171,200, and circuit court judges at $153,700. District attorneys in Laramie County and Natrona County “shall not be greater than” a circuit judge, currently $153,700. County and prosecuting attorneys in the other 21 counties sit in a full-time statutory band of $35,000 to $153,700 from 1 July 2024. Last change: 2023 Wyo. SL, Ch. 94, sustained in 2024 Wyo. SL, Ch. 54. LSO’s 2025 inflation read is that those salaries have kept pace with CPI from a 2005 base but not with the Wyoming Cost of Living Index. Federal district judges in the same LSO figure sit at $247,400 for 2025 — a contrast, not a Wyoming payroll.

The classified attorney grades underneath that statute are a published grid, not a survey of incumbents. The Department of Administration and Information Human Resources Division attorney table, document updated 1 January 2026, annualizes on 2,080 hours from Practicing Attorney 1 at a $53,910 minimum, $67,390 market pay policy and $80,870 maximum, through Practicing Attorney 5 / Managing Attorney 2 at a $109,890 minimum, $137,360 market pay policy and $164,840 maximum. A live Cheyenne posting for Senior Assistant Attorney General, Water and Natural Resources, job 2026-01034, opened 5 May 2026, lists $6,903.87 to $11,507.60 per month, about $82,850 to $138,090 annualized, JD required, Wyoming bar preferred, at-will under W.S. 9-1-608. The work is federal-court energy, natural-resource, environmental and water litigation at the Governor’s direction. That is the employer’s own careers page, not a job-board scrape.

Who pays the public-legal wage, on a single axis. Classified grades and live 2026 postings sit under a statutory ceiling. Markers are published tables and employer bands, not a survey of what incumbents take home.

The regulator is hiring against a load the Commission itself named. A State of Wyoming Utility Regulatory Counsel posting, in December 2025, frames generation, storage and transmission work against rising industrial, data-center and blockchain demand, and against carbon capture and advanced nuclear dockets. A separate Regional and FERC Attorney requisition, 2026-01279, opened 25 May 2026, lists $10,302.22 to $13,750 per month, about $123,600 to $165,000, five or more years, Wyoming bar, to monitor FERC bulk-power proceedings from 1 July 2026. That is a Cheyenne mid-to-senior seat on a classified-adjacent band, not a Denver lockstep offer.

Private legal services, as a payroll, shrank while the wage bill rose. The 2025 Wyoming Workforce Annual Report, published June 2025, puts NAICS 5411 at 1,372 average monthly jobs in 2024 against 1,399 in 2023, with total wages of $111.8 million against $106.6 million. QCEW 2025Q2 prints 1,358 private legal-services jobs, down 23 year-over-year, at an average weekly wage of $1,510, up $146 / 10.7 percent. Headcount fell. The wage bill did not. That is a small industry paying more per remaining job, still well below mining’s 2025Q4 average weekly wage of $2,196 on 15,301 jobs, and still above the statewide average annual wage of about $63,500 that Wyoming DWS printed for 2025.

A head of legal at a Cheyenne executive-branch agency, speaking in Sartori’s New York interview work over the same 24-month window, put the classified grades — not the Denver median — at the center of the conversation: “We lose people to Colorado. We do not lose them on the first offer if the band is honest.” The honesty is the point. A company that opens a Cheyenne requisition on a Denver number has not yet chosen which table it is paying.

We lose people to Colorado. We do not lose them on the first offer if the band is honest.

05 What 2026 is hiring

Three stacks create Wyoming legal work this year. None of them pay Denver lockstep.

Land-use and power in Cheyenne, federal-lands energy around Casper, and a still-small chancery and entity docket. The hiring consequence is mid-level utility, water, NEPA and local-counsel seats on the Wyoming table.

Cheyenne’s 2026 annexation wave is the land-use driver a municipal counsel, a PSC attorney and a private local-counsel shop can already feel. Cowboy State Daily, on 23 June 2026, reported Cheyenne City Council advanced annexation of a roughly 3,500-acre Highlands tract adjacent to existing Microsoft data centers on second of three readings, and rejected 8–3 a proposed $50 million community-benefits agreement. Wyoming Tribune Eagle, on 8 September 2026, reported the Public Services Committee advanced annexation and rezoning of 1,259.91 acres at Cox Ranch for a data center by ViaWest Group and Skybox Datacenters, a package that includes city-owned land with a Cheyenne Board of Public Utilities water-treatment facility. Data centers in that debate do not go through the Industrial Siting Commission. The work is annexation agreements, utility interconnection, water and sewer, and local counsel for the developer and for industrial offtakers — now through 2026–27, seniority mid-level-plus.

The Commission has said so in a hiring document. The same Utility Regulatory Counsel posting that names data-center and blockchain load is the regulator side of those annexations. Natrona County, on 10 September 2026, was in a parallel land-use fight over a potential AI data center, per Wyoming Public Media: Casper county and utility counsel, 2026, not an approved project. Cowboy State Daily, on 3 September 2026, reported a proposed 41,000-acre Laramie Range Wind Project of 139 turbines received a permit with 26 conditions not yet public. Power price remains a constraint: Cowboy State Daily, on 8 September 2026, reported lawmakers blaming Rocky Mountain Power for large industries “saying no” to Wyoming. The 27 October 2023 PSC general-rate hearing on a roughly $140.2 million retail increase plus $50.3 million ECAM is still the last fully reported hearing of that size in this record, with out-of-state utility counsel appearing in the Cheyenne room.

Public-lands energy did not freeze when the big EIS fell. Cowboy State Daily, on 10 March 2026, reported that a U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia opinion vacated the Bureau of Land Management Environmental Impact Statement and Record of Decision for the Converse County project — up to 5,000 wells on about 1.5 million acres — on 27 February 2026. The court denied a second amended complaint against 255 post-August 2025 permits as factually and legally distinct. Permits continue under the Casper Resource Management Plan, after a June 2025 supplemental EA and August–October 2025 EAs covering 270 wells plus 20 categorical exclusions covering 60 more. The hiring consequence is ongoing 2026 NEPA and administrative-law work for the Attorney General’s Water and Natural Resources Division and for Casper private energy counsel — piecemeal APD work rather than a single-EIS boom. Oil and natural gas still paid the state: the same report, citing the Wyoming Taxpayers Association 2025 Tax Summary, put oil and gas together at $557.7 million of severance tax in FY 2025, about 77 percent of $720 million total severance. Mining including oil and gas nonetheless lost 569 jobs in 2025, a 3.5 percent decline on the QCEW annual print. Coal-counsel volume is down. Oil-and-gas title, conservation-commission and federal-lands work continues on a permit-by-permit clock.

The entity and chancery stack is real and small. Wyoming Public Media, on 12 June 2026, put Chancery Court filings at 6 in 2022 and 48 in 2025, with an average wrap of 116 days against potentially over a year in district court. The court, created 2019, live December 2021, seated its first full-time judge in January 2025 in Casper, with one staff attorney, and takes non-jury commercial, business and trust claims over $50,000. Forty-eight filings is a docket, not a 48-lawyer boom. DAO LLC articles have been available since 1 July 2021; the Decentralized Unincorporated Nonprofit Association Act took effect 1 July 2024; SF22 amendments take effect 1 July 2026. Chambers Fintech 2026, published 31 March 2026, treats Wyoming as a digital-asset domicile and advises parties to consent to Chancery Court in operative documents. The hiring consequence is Cheyenne registered-agent, business-entity and specialist mid-level digital-asset work — entity filings and a handful of chancery disputes, not a 900-lawyer market.

Buy the Wyoming filePut a lawyer on the Wyoming payroll

  1. Local counsel on a Cheyenne or Casper file The default for a Denver- or Salt Lake-seated general counsel. The company pays Wyoming rates for Wyoming work and keeps the legal department where the rest of the company sits.
  2. A Cheyenne public or university seat Classified grades, statutory caps, posted monthly bands. The employer is the State, a county, the PSC, the U.S. Attorney or the university. The band is public before the search opens.
  3. An in-state company counsel hire Rare, and priced on the Wyoming table even when the work is data-center interconnection or federal-lands energy. Opening this seat on a Denver lockstep is how the search stalls.

Two other 2026 dockets load the Attorney General without moving private medians. WyoFile, on 11 September 2026, reported that the Wyoming Supreme Court in May reversed a district-court injunction against school-choice payments; disbursements resumed to roughly 3,400 students while the merits remain pending. The AG budget separately funds School Funding Equity Litigation at 4.00 positions and $1.78 million. WyoFile, on 10 September 2026, and Oil City News, on 9 September 2026, reported Wyoming Supreme Court argument on Casper Mountain gravel leases on school-trust land, with a related Natrona County zoning case set for October. That is AG lands, county counsel and private mining/land-use — 2026 appellate, senior.

Demand series sit above OEWS because they include the self-employed. Wyoming DWS short-term projections, prepared 20 February 2026 and dated 25 March 2026, take lawyers from 1,092 in 2025Q2 to 1,107 in 2027Q2, +15 jobs / +1.4 percent, with 84 total openings. The July 2024 long-term set takes lawyers from 1,249 in 2022 to 1,459 in 2032, +210 / +16.8 percent, with 729 total openings over the decade. Those are openings, not a hiring boom at Denver wages. NALP’s Class of 2025 Selected Findings, 5 August 2026, recorded a 37 percent year-over-year drop in federal employment of new graduates after the January 2025 federal hiring freeze. That is a national figure. Wyoming’s AG and DA desks remain the local government absorber; UW still placed 17 of the Class of 2025 in government.

Credential gates are uniform for every seat above. The Wyoming DWS 2025 Directory of Licensed Occupations, lawyer entry last updated June 2025, and the Wyoming Judicial Branch bar-admission page require an ABA-accredited JD, a UBE score of at least 270 or admission by motion after 5 to 7 years’ active practice, an MPRE of at least 85, and 15 hours of CLE including 2 ethics, with licenses expiring 30 September. Exam fee $600 plus $395 to $555 character investigation; yearly dues $237.50 to $355. The directory wage print for “Lawyer” — entry $35.32 an hour, about $73,470, and average $64.22 an hour, about $133,580 — is an OEWS-derived reprint, not a new survey. Google Ads Keyword Planner, in a 11 September 2026 four-country pull, recorded zero monthly searches for that primary string. The query is geo-AEO. The table is still the table.

06 How to price the seat

Budget the Wyoming table. Do not budget a Denver rung you will not pay.

Sartori has worked associate-line search for more than 10 years. The telemetry below is that desk. It is not a Wyoming interview cohort — and that gap is the finding a company should hear first.

Of 33 closed associate searches over the trailing three years, 8 files involved a candidate who held a Cheyenne, Casper or other Mountain-West option next to a New York or Denver offer. Six of those eight accepted the higher-cost-market number. Four of the 33 ran past the 12-week end of our typical 6 to 12 week band when the client priced a Mountain-West seat as if it sat on a coastal associate scale. We now brief that mismatch in the first call rather than in week eight. Completion on the same desk is 94 percent. Counter-offer incidence is 37 percent. Median offer-to-acceptance is 11 working days.

Sartori does not run a Wyoming interview cohort. The 1,675 structured interviews sit with New York lawyers. The New York mapping file holds about 67,000 lawyers. We do not publish a Wyoming mapping count, and the file cannot see how many of the state’s licenses sit outside wage-and-salary payroll. Quarterly surveys have run since 2019 against a global map of nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles.

Your first decision is whether this is a hire or a file. A Denver-seated general counsel who needs a Cheyenne annexation or a Casper title opinion is usually buying hours. A company that needs a signature on a PSC filing, a Board of Public Utilities agreement or an at-will AG-side matter is hiring.

  • Open on the state median. $100,130 is the payroll figure. A band that starts at the Cheyenne 25th ($77,280) and tops out near the Senior AAG ceiling ($138,090) covers most of what this market actually pays.
  • Do not import a lockstep. The 2026 BigLaw associate scale is a different instrument, documented on our 2026 market scale page. Cheyenne does not sit on it.
  • Read the public grid first. A&I grades and the LSO statutory grid are the conversation. Counter-offers behave differently when both sides can read the same session law.
  • Price local counsel first. Out-of-state legal departments already buy Cheyenne and Casper files. The hire is justified when the work is no longer episodic.
  • Hold the timeline honestly. The associate-line desk that closed 33 searches at a 94 percent completion rate typically fills in 6 to 12 weeks. Budget past 12 weeks if the requisition still carries a Denver number.

The $100,130 median is a payroll cell for covered establishments. Read your own desk against it, not against a coastal scale you are not being offered.

  • Public desk: the classified grades and the $153,700 circuit / DA cap are the ceiling that matters. The live Senior AAG band is $82,850 to $138,090. That is a real Cheyenne number.
  • Private desk: the professional-services median is $97,492. QCEW weekly wages in offices of lawyers are not your salary; they mix the whole payroll.
  • In-house: the largest named in-state corporate team outside government is the university’s Laramie office, about 7 to 8 attorneys, with Associate General Counsel I posted at $73,800 commensurate. Energy GC work is often a Denver seat buying your hours.
  • Take-home is real and not the close. Wyoming levies no individual income tax. It does not turn $98,590 into $168,520.
  • The pipeline already knows. Fifteen of the UW Class of 2025 employed graduates went to Colorado; 30 stayed. That is a choice the table explains without a lockstep story.

Two anonymized composites, described by category only. A Denver-seated independent producer, PE-backed, needed Casper title and conservation-commission work on a permit-by-permit clock after the Converse County EIS fell. The general counsel’s first brief was an in-house Cheyenne hire on a Denver-adjacent band. The search was redesigned in week two as a local-counsel panel plus a six-month secondment. It closed in 9 weeks. The company did not put a lawyer on a Wyoming payroll. A Cheyenne data-center developer, mid-market, needed municipal, water and utility counsel during the 2026 annexation wave. The hire was a seven-year government-side energy and natural-resources lawyer into a company-counsel seat, banded inside the live Senior AAG range, on a 10-week clock. No firm, company or candidate is named because none of those composites is a named file.

The service view of putting a lawyer on a company payroll sits on our in-house counsel recruiting page. Associate-line search, the desk whose 33 closed files sit behind the telemetry above, sits on our associate recruiting page. Companies building a legal function from nothing should start with the first general counsel guide before they price a Cheyenne number.

Common questions about lawyer pay in Wyoming in 2026

What is the lawyer salary Wyoming figure for 2026?

The May 2025 OEWS table, published in the 2026 cycle, puts Wyoming lawyers at a $100,130 median and a $125,050 mean on about 900 wage-and-salary jobs. CareerOneStop reprints that Bureau of Labor Statistics table in its 2025 column for SOC 23-1011. The 10th percentile sits at $61,170 and the 90th at $233,950. That is a payroll figure for covered establishments; it is not a solo-practice draw, and it is 37 percent below the U.S. lawyer median of $159,670 that the Occupational Outlook Handbook, last modified 27 August 2026, reported for the same May 2025 survey.

Does Cheyenne lawyer pay track Denver lockstep?

No. Cheyenne’s lawyer median is $98,590 and its 90th percentile is $157,860 on the same May 2025 OEWS column — below Colorado’s lawyer median of $168,520. BLS Mountain-Plains news releases dated 5 August 2026 put Cheyenne legal occupations at a $39.97 mean hourly wage against Denver’s $78.85. Those major-group means include paralegals and title examiners, and they still break the lockstep story. The University of Wyoming College of Law Class of 2025 sent 15 employed graduates to Colorado and 30 to Wyoming, which is a pipeline, not a pay match.

What does in house counsel salary Cheyenne actually look like in 2026?

In-state general counsel teams are thin: the University of Wyoming’s Laramie office is about 7 to 8 attorneys, with Associate General Counsel I posted at $73,800. Public-administration lawyers statewide — the Attorney General, district attorneys, county attorneys, PSC counsel — posted a $103,301 median on the March 2025 ECI update of the 2024 OEWS. Energy and utility general counsel who buy Wyoming work mostly sit in Denver or Salt Lake and retain Cheyenne or Casper firms as local counsel rather than putting a lawyer on a Wyoming payroll.

What does the State of Wyoming pay assistant attorneys general?

A live Cheyenne posting for Senior Assistant Attorney General in Water and Natural Resources, opened 5 May 2026, lists $6,903.87 to $11,507.60 per month, about $82,850 to $138,090 annualized. That band sits on the Department of Administration and Information attorney grades updated 1 January 2026, which run from Practicing Attorney 1 at a $53,910 minimum to Practicing Attorney 5 / Managing Attorney 2 at a $164,840 maximum. All Attorney General lawyers are at-will under W.S. 9-1-608. The statutory ceiling above them is a circuit judge or district attorney at $153,700, set by 2023 and 2024 session law and restated in the Legislative Service Office memorandum of 8 June 2026.

Why is the public-administration lawyer median higher than private-firm pay in Wyoming?

Public-administration lawyers posted a $103,301 median on about 300 jobs; the 570 private professional-services lawyers posted $97,492. Those cells are the March 2025 ECI update of the 2024 OEWS. The public 90th percentile, $153,783, sits on the statutory circuit-judge and district-attorney cap of $153,700. The private desk is larger and more general-practice; the public desk is a classified and statutory grid. Neither grid is a Denver associate scale.

How many lawyers work in Wyoming, and is attorney salary Cheyenne the same as the state figure?

Band wage-and-salary lawyer employment at about 900 to 940. May 2025 OEWS prints about 900 statewide; Wyoming DWS prints 940 on the 2024 employment base. Cheyenne is not the high cell: its lawyer median is $98,590 against the state $100,130, and Casper prints $102,890. The American Bar Association’s 2025 National Lawyer Population Survey counted 1,656 resident active attorneys as of 31 December 2024 — licenses, not jobs. Laramie County held 533 of those active licenses in the first quarter of 2026, per a 16 April 2026 bar-roster reprint.

OEWS and DWS LEWIS figures measure wage-and-salary lawyers in covered establishments and exclude self-employed practitioners. QCEW weekly wages in NAICS 5411 and 541110 cover every occupation on the legal-services payroll, not lawyers alone. Legal-occupations major-group means (SOC 23-0000) include paralegals and title examiners. The May 2025 BLS median of $100,130 is the 2026 state figure; the March 2025 and September 2025 DWS prints are ECI updates of the May 2024 survey. Eastern Wyoming's 90th-percentile cell is a thin estimate. ABA counts are licenses. Short-term and long-term projections include the self-employed and are not OEWS payroll. NALP Class of 2025 findings are national. Colorado figures are contrast only.
