Legal project manager salary in 2026
Two readers, one table. The person who is paid this seat, and the company that writes the offer, are both looking at a title the public surveys do not price.
The 2026 cash, before the argument.
Year sits inside every figure. The first row is the number a search returns. The second row is the company seat.
| Seat | Year | Cash | Bonus | What the figure is |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Project Management Specialist, United States, all industries | May 2025 | $102,320 median | Not published | BLS OEWS, SOC 13-1082. 1,066,670 jobs. The cell people paste onto this title. |
| In-house legal project manager, US company | 2026 band; offers closed 2022–2026 | $146,000–$176,000 base | 10–20% of base | 4 accepted offers inside 12 legal-operations placements since 2017. Median base $163,000. |
| Legal-operations contractor covering project work, United States | 2026 | $900–$1,600 a day | Day rate | Legal-operations contractor card. A legal project manager engaged by the day is priced on this card. |
| Legal-operations contractor covering project work, United Kingdom | 2026 | £700–£1,200 a day | Day rate | Same card, sterling. No London legal project manager placement sits inside the 12. |
The May 2025 median is wages only, every industry. The 2026 company band is base plus a target bonus, from four closed files, and it is not a law-firm posting. Equity, when a growth-stage company has it, sits outside the base. The analyst-to-head ladder for the wider function is on the legal operations salary page.
There is no government cell called legal project manager.
The salary gap is a classification gap. The surveys price a project manager. The company is buying someone who can run legal work without practicing law.
May 2025 median annual wage for project management specialists in professional, scientific, and technical services. Law offices sit inside that sector. BLS does not cut the sector down to legal departments.
Each button is a May 2025 median for SOC 13-1082. None of them is a 2026 legal project manager salary. Sources are listed below.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, last modified August 27, 2026, puts the May 2025 median annual wage for project management specialists at $102,320. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $61,580. The highest 10 percent earned more than $167,970. O*NET OnLine, publishing the same Bureau of Labor Statistics 2025 wage file, puts the 25th percentile at $78,440 and the 75th percentile at $133,100. The national mean, from the May 2025 OEWS news release of May 15, 2026, is $110,740 across 1,066,670 jobs, with a median hourly wage of $49.19.
Those are wages for people who coordinate a budget, a schedule, and a staff on a project. The Handbook says the largest employer group in 2025 was professional, scientific, and technical services, at 28 percent of the occupation. Construction was 22 percent of jobs. Law offices sit inside professional services. The May 2025 industry medians are in the chart below. BLS does not publish a line for “legal project manager.” It classifies workers by duties, not by the title on the requisition.
A company that opens the May 2025 national median and writes $102,320 into a legal requisition has imported a construction coordinator, an IT coordinator, and a finance project manager into the same cell as the person who will run matter plans, resourcing, and status for a general counsel. The low end of the four accepted company bases, $146,000, sits above that May 2025 75th percentile of $133,100. The gap is the point of the table.
A legal project manager and a construction project manager share a verb. They do not share a payroll.
Five readings from the legal-operations placements.
Each reading names the segment, the base it sits inside, and the window. Twelve legal-operations placements since 2017 are the ceiling. The titled legal project manager count cannot exceed them.
Title, inside the twelve. Of 12 legal-operations placements Sartori & Partners completed from 2017 through 2026, 4 closed with the title legal project manager. The segment is that title. The base is the 12. The window is 2017–2026. 8 closed under another title. Twelve is itself a thin book: legal operations is 12 of 400+ placements since 2017 (230+ in-house).
Cash on the four. On those 4 accepted offers, closed from 2022 through 2026 at US companies, base ran from $146,000 to $176,000. The median base was $163,000. Target bonus ran from 10 percent to 20 percent of base, and the median target was 15 percent. The segment is US company legal project managers who accepted. The base is the four. The window is 2022–2026. That is the 2026 band in the first table. It is not a survey of the market outside these files.
The first number was the BLS number. On 2 of those 4 searches, the company’s first written base sat below $120,000, anchored to the public project-management median, and was rewritten before the shortlist went out. The segment is titled legal project manager searches that later closed. The base is the four. The window is 2022–2026. The two files were the 2022 San Francisco fintech and the 2023 Boston software company. Both closed above the draft.
Credential, not a law license. Of the 4 people hired, 1 held a JD and 3 held a PMP. The segment is credentials on accepted legal project manager hires. The base is the four. The window is 2022–2026. The one JD was also a PMP, at the Boston company. The San Francisco hire held neither.
Five briefs were the wrong title. Of the 12 legal-operations placements from 2017 through 2026, 5 opened under a legal project manager title and were retitled legal operations manager before shortlist, because the work included e-billing administration rather than matter plans alone. The segment is briefs that opened as legal project manager. The base is the 12. The window is 2017–2026. Added to the four that kept the title, 9 of the 12 touched the words. 3 never used them. A company that wants intake, e-billing, and a panel is hiring the manager on the head of legal operations guide, not the second row of the table above.
One placement did not hold. Of the 4 legal project managers hired from 2022 through 2026, 1 left at month 16. The employer was a NASDAQ-listed software company in Boston. The 2023 accepted base was $168,000, with a 15 percent target. The seat had no authority to change intake. The segment is titled legal project manager placements. The base is the four. The window runs through 2026.
| Year closed | Employer | Accepted base | Target bonus | Shortlist day | Week accepted | Reports to |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 | PE-backed healthcare, Chicago | $158,000 | 15% | 18 | 10 | General counsel |
| 2024 | NYSE-listed payments, New York | $176,000 | 20% | 22 | 9 | Head of legal operations |
| 2023 | NASDAQ-listed software, Boston | $168,000 | 15% | 16 | 8 | Head of legal operations |
| 2022 | Series C fintech, San Francisco | $146,000 | 10% | 19 | 11 | General counsel |
Shortlists on the four fell between day 16 and day 22. Accepted offers fell between week 8 and week 11. The legal-operations median across all 12 legal-operations placements since 2017 remains 20 days to shortlist and 9 weeks to an accepted offer. The four do not replace that median.

The 2024 New York accepted base sat above the May 2025 New York-Newark-Jersey City median of $126,660. The 2022 San Francisco accepted base of $146,000 sat above the later May 2025 San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont median of $135,040. Different years. Employment of the generic occupation is projected to grow 7 percent from 2025 to 2035, from 1,094,300 jobs to 1,167,400, with about 76,500 openings a year. That projection is the Employment Projections program. The 1,066,670 count is the May 2025 wage survey. Neither series counts legal project managers.
The Project Management Institute’s 14th salary survey, dated December 2025, reports a median of $135,000 for PMP-certified respondents in the United States, 24 percent higher than non-certified respondents in the same survey. Across 21 countries, certified respondents reported a 17 percent higher median. Nearly 60 percent of certified respondents reported a compensation increase in the prior year, and three-quarters of those raises were up to 10 percent. PMI surveys project professionals, not legal departments.
CLOC’s February 12, 2025 release, drawn from the 2024 Harbor Law Department Survey, covers 186 organizations in 14 countries and more than 15 industries. Eighty-three percent of legal departments expected demand to increase. Sixty-three percent named workload and resource bandwidth as the top challenge. Thirty percent were already using AI, nearly double 2023, and 54 percent planned to adopt it within two years. The release has no legal project manager salary.

BLS OOH, May 2025 ↗CLOC explains why the seat opens. It does not say what to pay the person who takes it.
The person paid, and the company paying.
Same table. Different mistakes. Switch sides.
A May 2025 median of $102,320 tells you what project managers earn in the economy. It does not tell you what a general counsel paid for this title.
| What to test in an offer | Why it moves the 2026 number |
|---|---|
| Is the payroll a company or a law firm? | This band is the company seat. A firm pays a legal project manager against client matters. None of the 12 legal-operations placements was a law-firm seat. |
| Who do you report to? | 2 of the 4 reported to the general counsel. 2 reported to a head of legal operations. The reporting line is the job. |
| Is the bonus a percent of base, and is it real? | The four targets ran 10 to 20 percent. A base at the bottom of the band with a bonus that never pays is a different offer. |
| Did 2 of the four draw a counter-offer? | The New York payments hire and the Boston software hire both did, and both still accepted. A counter-offer is evidence the employer already knew the seat was underpriced. |
| Does the PMI figure belong in your ask? | The December 2025 PMI median of $135,000 is PMP-certified project professionals in the United States. It is a useful floor for a generic project career. It is not this title. |
No London legal project manager closed inside the 12, so these files carry no sterling base. A UK contractor covering the work is on the day-rate row, £700 to £1,200 in 2026. What the seat is allowed to own, separate from what it pays, is set out in legal project managers as the bridge between lawyers and technology.
Budget the second row of the first table. If the work is e-billing and intake, you are on a different search, at a different band.
| What finance should lock | The 2026 consequence |
|---|---|
| Base and target bonus, as two numbers | Median accepted base on the four was $163,000, with a median target bonus of 15 percent of base. Cash at that median target is base plus bonus. Equity, if the plan has it, is extra and belongs inside total first-year compensation. |
| The search fee | Retained only. The fee is 25 to 30 percent of total first-year compensation. A retainer of 30 percent of the fee is paid at engagement and kept if the search is cancelled. |
| Replacement | Six months on in-house searches other than general counsel, chief legal officer, and chief compliance officer. This seat takes the six-month term. |
| Contractor versus headcount | A legal-operations contractor is $900 to $1,600 a day in the US in 2026. Use it to stand a workflow up. Do not leave a permanent seat priced as a day rate, or a day rate priced as a director. |
| Authority on the scorecard | The Boston file left at month 16 because the seat could not change intake. Pay at $168,000 did not supply the authority the offer letter omitted. |
Copying the May 2025 median of $102,320 into the grade ignores the second row of the first table. Companies hiring the operator who runs the function, rather than one project stream, should start from legal operations recruiting and the legal operations salary bands.
Base, bonus, and the day rate. Equity is the exception.
At this seat the package is cash. Equity shows up when the company is already granting it to the legal team, not because the title requires it.
Generic project managerLegal function
- Public occupation SOC 13-1082. Every industry. The May 2025 median lives here. Useful as a floor you have now cleared.
- Legal project manager Company payroll. Matter plans, resourcing, status. Reports to the general counsel or to a head of legal operations.
- Legal operations manager Adds e-billing, intake, or panel administration. Different title, different band, different search.
2 of the 4 reported to a head of legal operations, in New York and in Boston. 2 reported to the general counsel, in Chicago and in San Francisco, where there was no head of legal operations yet. The Chicago hire was the company’s first legal project manager.
The head of that function is a separate search. Twelve legal-operations placements since 2017 include it. The listed-software matter in Austin is that search, not a legal project manager file. The pay context for the ladder sits on the legal operations salary page.
- One stream of legal work: plans, resourcing, status
- Does not practice law and does not own the panel
- Cash is base plus a target bonus
- 4 closed files, 2022 through 2026
- Intake, e-billing, or outside-counsel administration
- Often the first operations hire in the department
- Priced on the legal operations ladder, not this row
- 5 briefs were retitled into this seat before shortlist
Chicago, 2025: a first legal project manager at a PE-backed healthcare group.
One file, named by role, sector, and city. The 2026 band is this offer, not a round number borrowed from a survey.
A PE-backed healthcare group in Chicago had no legal operations head and no legal project manager. Outside counsel was running matters the general counsel could not see in one place. The brief that went to market was a first legal project manager, reporting to the general counsel, with a PMP and no JD requirement, and with authority to set the matter plan and the status rhythm. Not authority over the panel. That limit was written down so the seat would not be hired as a head of legal operations.
The shortlist was out on day 18. The accepted base was $158,000, with a target bonus of 15 percent of base. The offer was accepted in week 10 of 2025. There was no counter-offer. The hire held a PMP and did not hold a JD. The file is one of 4 titled legal project manager placements inside 12 legal-operations placements since 2017. Week 10 is slower than the 9-week legal-operations median because the perimeter was written before the shortlist went out.
The 2024 New York payments hire closed at $176,000 base and a 20 percent target, reporting to a head of legal operations, with a counter-offer, in week 9. The 2023 Boston file closed in week 8, at $168,000, and the person left at month 16 when intake stayed with the lawyers. Pay did not fail in Boston. The scorecard did.

Legal project manager salary: questions both readers ask
What is a legal project manager salary in 2026?
The May 2025 BLS median is $102,320, and it is the wrong cell. Across 4 US company offers closed from 2022 through 2026, accepted base ran $146,000 to $176,000, target bonus 10 to 20 percent of base. Those four sit inside 12 legal-operations placements since 2017.
Why is the Bureau of Labor Statistics figure the wrong benchmark?
BLS prices an occupation, not this title. In May 2025, Project Management Specialists had a median of $102,320 across 1,066,670 jobs. The 75th percentile was $133,100.
How many legal project manager placements sit in the Sartori record?
4 of 12 legal-operations placements since 2017 closed with the title. The clock on all 12 is 20 days to shortlist and 9 weeks to an accepted offer. The four titled files closed between week 8 and week 11.
Does a legal project manager need a law degree to reach this band?
Not on these four hires. 1 of 4 held a JD. 3 of 4 held a PMP. The JD holder also held a PMP.
When is this a legal operations manager search instead?
When the work includes e-billing administration, not only matter plans. 5 of 12 legal-operations briefs since 2017 opened as legal project manager and were retitled legal operations manager before shortlist.
What does the company pay to run the search, and what is guaranteed?
The fee is 25 to 30 percent of total first-year compensation. A retainer of 30 percent of the fee is paid at engagement and kept if the search is cancelled. Replacement on this seat is 6 months.
