Salary · London solicitor title
What the solicitor title pays in London in 2026
A general counsel buying England-and-Wales capacity, and a solicitor earning it, are looking at the same 2026 number. It is a price for a practising certificate. A US attorney card does not carry it.
A lawyer salary london figure is four paychecks.
London firms booked £23.16 billion of solicitor-firm turnover in 2024, 67.6 percent of England and Wales, according to Law Society figures reprinted in the Law Gazette on 18 September 2025. Sartori maps 30,000 lawyers in London. The 2026 question for a solicitor is what share of that cash a given desk will pay for the title itself.

Pick the buyer before you pick the number. A US attorney title without SRA authorization does not conduct reserved English-law work in its own name. The firm-tier table is next.
- 178,428

The SRA monthly table is a national stock, not a London solicitor census: it counted 173,320 practising solicitors in January 2026 and 168,046 in January 2025, and 214,080 people on the roll at the end of June 2026. Sartori's quarterly market surveys have run since 2019; they are the global frame. The London associate numbers on this page come from mandate telemetry and from the city interview cohort named in the byline.
The 2026 solicitor figure is a price for a practising certificate, not for a New York bar card.
Solicitor salary London by firm tier, 2026
The number a newly qualified solicitor takes home in London is published by employer, not by the Office for National Statistics. Below is the 2026 sitting record by buyer type — UK lockstep, US London scale, and the UK firms that sit between them.
Legal Cheek's compilation dated 29 September 2025 put average newly qualified base across 100-plus firms on its Firms Most List at £118,756, a rise of nearly 5 percent on the prior year, against UK CPI of 3.8 percent in the 12 months to August 2025 as cited in that same piece. That average mixes national UK firms with US London offices; it is not a London solicitor median, and no ONS Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings four-digit median for London solicitors is used on this page because the 2025 bulletin was not captured.
Magic Circle newly qualified base remains at £150,000 on Clifford Chance's and A&O Shearman's live 2026 London training-contract pages. The Circle caught up in 2024 and then froze while US London offices kept moving. A general counsel who copies last year's Magic Circle number onto a 2026 US-office brief is a year late.

Mayer Brown is a US-headquartered London office that, on its 2026 Legal Cheek card, elected Magic Circle junior pay rather than the dollar scale. Hogan Lovells Cadwalader launched as a combined firm on 1 July 2026, with London named as one of five growth engines in the firm announcement; this table keeps the 29 September 2025 Hogan Lovells NQ of £140,000 as the last dated UK-heritage print, and does not invent a post-merger split. Ashurst Perkins Coie had partnership approval on 13 April 2026 with close expected in Q3 2026 — not treated here as a completed 11 September 2026 fact.
What 2026 London pay is actually buying
A US attorney admission and an England-and-Wales practising certificate are not interchangeable in a London office. The 2026 paycheck prices the second.
Home-state title onlyReserved English-law rights
- US attorney, no SRA seat May be held out only with the foreign qualification made clear. Cannot carry on reserved English-and-Welsh legal activities in their own name.
- Registered foreign lawyer Practices home-state law and may advise on English and Welsh law in unreserved work. Reserved work only in narrow, supervised circumstances. Cannot be a sole practitioner or freelancer.
- Solicitor with a practising certificate The title that conducts reserved legal activities. This is the product a general counsel is buying when the file is English-law litigation, reserved instruments, or probate.
Legal Services Act 2007 section 12, as published on legislation.gov.uk, lists six reserved legal activities: rights of audience, conduct of litigation, reserved instrument activities, probate activities, notarial activities, and the administration of oaths. Unreserved legal advice is a legal activity; it is not reserved. A US attorney title, without SRA authorization, does not carry those reserved rights. That is the gate. The Law Society International Data Insights Report, dated 9 September 2025, put English law at around 40 percent of global business and financial transactions, recorded 196 written judgments in the London Commercial Court from October 2023 to September 2024, and stated that 78 percent of LCIA cases in 2024 were governed by English law. The title is expensive because the law it carries is the one counterparties still pick.
SRA guidance on registered foreign lawyers, updated 13 February 2025, is the practice-rights differential a London US LLP actually runs. Kirkland & Ellis International LLP's London office page states that its partners are solicitors and registered foreign lawyers, authorized and regulated by the SRA (number 349107). Latham & Watkins (London) LLP (SRA number 203820) says its partners are solicitors, registered foreign lawyers, European lawyers or SRA-authorized managers. The same office can therefore pay a solicitor-title NQ on a converted dollar scale and still staff some partners as RFLs. The paycheck follows the credential mix, not the brass plate.
The SQE came into force on 1 September 2021, Legal Cheek reported that day, eventually phasing out the LPC: two SQE1 papers of 180 questions each, SQE2 as 16 written and oral tasks, plus two years' qualifying work experience. Overseas-qualified lawyers, including US attorneys, now use that SQE route. SRA's qualified-lawyers page, updated 19 December 2025, states that QLTS has been replaced by SQE, that qualified-lawyer status in mySRA flags that qualifying work experience is not required, and that admission still needs character and suitability plus a certificate of good standing less than three months old. The SRA's SQE four years on paper, published 29 January 2026, recorded more than 30,000 candidates across 50 countries between November 2021 and July 2025, and noted that qualified lawyers have lower pass rates, in general, on both SQE1 and SQE2. Conversion is a filter, not a courtesy stamp.
SRA Education and Training Annual Report 2023/24, published 2 February 2026, counted 2,600 SQE-route admissions in that authorization year, of which 1,615 were already qualified lawyers. That is the US-attorney conversion path showing up in the admissions mix. LPC then a period of recognized training still accounted for 6,504 admissions that year. From September 2024, A&O Shearman's London training page requires SQE even for LPC holders; Clifford Chance requires SQE 1, SQE 2 and firm SQE Plus on a first-attempt pass, including for people who have already passed the LPC. The 2026 sitting NQ at those firms is an SQE product.
| Credential | May do | May not do | Who employs it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solicitor with practising certificate | Reserved legal activities in their own name; hold out as solicitor | Ignore the SRA Codes because the employer is a company | SRA-authorized firms; in-house teams that hold the person out as a solicitor or assign reserved work |
| Registered foreign lawyer | Home-state law; unreserved English and Welsh advice; limited supervised reserved assistance | Sole practice; freelance; reserved litigation in their own name | SRA-authorized London LLPs that mix solicitors and RFLs |
| US attorney, not on the SRA register | Advise on home-state law if the qualification is made clear | Hold out as solicitor or attorney without the jurisdiction qualifier (Solicitors Act 1974 s.21) | In-house desks and firms that want US-law capacity, not reserved English-law capacity |
| In-house solicitor at an unauthorized employer | Advise the employer and connected persons; reserved work if a PC is held | Serve the public as if the company were a law firm, unless the employer is authorized | Banks, funds, FTSE groups, the Bank of England, FCA, GLD, CPS, local government |
The Court of Appeal in CILEX and others v Mazur [2026] EWCA Civ 369, media summary dated 31 March 2026, held that an unauthorized person can lawfully perform tasks within the conduct of litigation for an authorized individual if that individual retains responsibility and puts appropriate supervision in place. The High Court distinction between assisting (lawful) and conducting under supervision (an offence) was wrong. City litigation teams can keep using paralegals and trainees under a solicitor's supervision. It does not let a US attorney without SRA authorization carry on litigation in their own name. The reserved-activity premium still sits on the authorized solicitor. SRA RFL guidance had already flagged a review in light of that judgment.
Budget the US London scale if the work is reserved English law sitting inside a dollar partnership.
Who earns the figure, and who writes the check
The same title is bought by a Magic Circle training-contract machine, by an SRA-authorized US LLP, and by a general counsel who is not a law firm at all.
Manufactured NQHired as qualified capacity
- UK lockstep firm Four six-month seats, SQE, a published trainee-to-NQ ladder. The buyer is making a solicitor, then paying the Circle rate.
- US-headquartered London LLP Solicitors and registered foreign lawyers in one SRA vehicle. NQ often converted from a New York dollar scale. Some offices run no UK training contract at all.
- In-house general counsel The employer need not be SRA-authorized if the solicitor advises only that body. The GC pays the title, funds the practising certificate, and is the SRA contact point.
A UK firm buys a manufactured newly qualified solicitor; a US London LLP often buys a qualified lateral onto a dollar-linked scale.
- Clifford Chance seats the finance desk first. The live London training-contract page requires at least one seat in Global Financial Markets, described as the largest practice area, with optional international, client, or disputes splits. Pay is £56,000 / £61,000 / £150,000 NQ.
- A&O Shearman still trains commercial solicitors in sterling. Applications for the March 2028 London start ran 1 September to 5 October 2026. Core seats are finance, corporate, disputes and ENRI. Reuters recorded the Allen & Overy / Shearman & Sterling combination completing on 1 May 2024; the London training page did not flip NQs onto a $225,000 scale.
- Kirkland's London office is a private-capital solicitor shop. Established 1994, more than 500 attorneys, focused on financial investors, private equity, real estate, special situations and funds. Training contracts: 15. That is not a UK high-street mix.
- Slaughter and May hires through the cycle, not the board. On 11 September 2026 both the student and experienced-lawyer portals resolved to a list with business-services posts, a six-month PEI paralegal FTC, and a Brussels stagiaire — no NQ or associate solicitor vacancy in the public list. The firm remains on the £150,000 NQ compilation. Lockstep buyers of this type do not run an open associate market.
A company can employ solicitors without becoming a law firm. The general counsel still pays for independence, a practising certificate, and a title that will survive a reserved file.
- Authorization follows reserved work, not the payroll. SRA guidance updated 25 November 2019 applies Legal Services Act 2007 section 15 only to reserved legal services. An employer that uses solicitors solely to advise that body, or persons connected to it, need not be an authorized person.
- The client is the organization. SRA guidance updated 18 November 2024 tells in-house solicitors that the client is the employer, not the line manager: a board of directors, a trust board, a council. The same day's employer-facing guidance tells the chief legal officer not to expect the solicitor to change advice to hit a commercial outcome, and notes there is no SRA-mandatory professional indemnity insurance outside regulated firms.
- The Bank of England Legal Directorate is an in-house buyer of 1 to 4 PQE. The live legal-careers page describes around 170 colleagues, work for the Prudential Regulation Authority, and regular contact with the FCA and HM Treasury. Titles run Legal Counsel / Senior Lawyer, plus a trainee solicitor scheme.
- Government Legal Profession prices the same title at roughly one-third of Magic Circle NQ. Solicitors must have completed training or qualifying work experience, or have been exempted by the SRA; overseas qualification may still need SQE. Legal Officer is generally equivalent to 0 to 3 years' PQE, around £50,000; Grade 7 around £60,000, location- and department-dependent, on the live GLP page. The Crown Prosecution Service was hiring Crown Prosecutors and Senior Crown Prosecutors in windows running through autumn 2026.
- Bank legal boards mix Counsel and Attorney labels. A Barclays legal search on 11 September 2026 returned 15 results, including a London Director, UK Head of Legal eDiscovery & Data Operations Counsel, alongside ISDA, prime-services and structured-products Attorney titles. English-law capacity and product knowledge are what the markets desk is buying; the Attorney label marks the US-law slice of the same department.
TheCityUK's UK legal services 2024 report, citing ONS/NISRA 2022, put London legal-services employment at 133,000 jobs — all occupations in the industry, not a practising-solicitor headcount. The same report counted more than 200 foreign law firms in the UK from around 40 jurisdictions, around 100 US firms, and 8,569 fee-earners at the 50 largest foreign law firms in London in 2022. Around half of foreign firms in the UK offered a full-service English-law capability. That cluster is why a London NQ table splits US firm versus Magic Circle even though both desks employ SRA solicitors.
SRA Diversity of in-house solicitors, page dated 10 January 2024, put in-house solicitors at around 20 percent of all practising solicitors. Snapshot 25 April 2023: 33,584 with a practising certificate or working without one in a government department. Of that 33,584, 66 percent were private sector and 28 percent public sector, of which local government 13 percent, Crown Prosecution Service 7 percent, Government Legal Profession 4 percent. Age peaked at 35–44 (40 percent of all in-house). The in-house desk is a mid-seniority buyer, not an NQ factory. TheCityUK reproduced a Law Society figure of 35,738 solicitors working in-house in 2023 and noted that major UK financial institutions are known to have in-house litigation teams of between 15 and 40 people. London associate mandate telemetry records a 35 percent counter-offer incidence over the trailing three years: a general counsel filling a solicitor-title seat should budget a defense, especially where the incumbent sits in a US London office.
The only full 2026 London PQE ladder in the public record
UK Magic Circle firms publish trainee and NQ bases. They do not publish a 2026 mid-seniority lockstep on the careers pages. One US litigation office does.
Legal Cheek reported on 5 June 2026 that Quinn Emanuel raised London associate salaries 5 percent from 1 July 2026, matching a contemporaneous US scale move. At the time of that piece, Davis Polk, Gibson Dunn, Paul Weiss and Willkie still showed £180,000 NQ on the Firms Most List, so Quinn sat £9,000 above that cluster. The 7-PQE-and-above band is off-scale at £331,000–£373,000. No equivalent Magic Circle 3–5 PQE grid appears on the employer careers pages used here; any such band is omitted rather than guessed.
Clifford Chance / A&O Shearman year-one trainee
Published on both firms' live 2026 London training-contract pages. Year-two is £61,000.
Clifford Chance London training contract ↗Trainee solicitor salary is the cost of manufacturing the title inside the firm. US London offices that run a training contract pay a premium at that rung too: Kirkland's year-one trainee is £14,000 above Clifford Chance. Offices that do not train in the UK, Quinn Emanuel among them, buy the title on the lateral market at NQ and above. A chief legal officer hiring a 3 PQE solicitor out of a US London disputes seat is bidding against the Quinn ladder, not against the Circle NQ freeze.
Reform-rich desks, volume-thin IPOs
City solicitor pay is not being funded by a 2025 IPO boom. It is being funded by private capital, disputes, and a lockstep that froze after a 2024 catch-up.
The Takeover Panel Annual Report for the year ended 31 March 2025 recorded 57 firm offers with aggregate value of approximately £43 billion, down from 61 offers the prior year; 12 of those offers were valued at greater than £1 billion, and about one third were by private equity and similar investors. Davis Polk's 15 January 2026 recap of calendar-2025 Main Market and AIM firm offers also counted 57, with aggregate value over £37.8 billion against £50 billion in 2024; US bidders appeared in 18 of 57 offers and in 7 of 11 offers over £1 billion. AIM accounted for 44 percent of firm offers. The Code stopped applying to UK companies listed only on NYSE or Nasdaq from 3 February 2025, with a two-year transitional for companies incorporated before the amendments — public M&A solicitor demand concentrates on Main Market and AIM targets.
London Stock Exchange's June 2025 macroeconomic update, data to 1 July 2025, recorded 9 IPOs year-to-date and £8.9 billion total capital raised, with follow-ons dominating (Haleon and BAT among the largest). The FCA's UK Listing Rules rewrite came into force on 29 July 2024 (PS24/6). The public offers and admissions to trading regime came into force on 19 January 2026 (PS25/9); Skadden's 19 January 2026 alert on that regime notes the secondary-fundraising prospectus threshold rising from 20 percent to 75 percent of issued share capital in 12 months, and the IPO prospectus-before-admission window cutting from six working days to three. Takeover Panel RS 2025/1 amendments on dual-class share structures, IPO disclosure and buybacks took effect on 4 February 2026. AIM Notices 64 and 65 were published on 5 August 2026. The desks that advise on those instruments are busy. The IPO count is not.
That split is why a US private-equity or disputes office can still pay £175,000–£189,000 NQ while Magic Circle NQ has sat at £150,000 since May 2024. Private-capital deal flow and a New York dollar scale are carrying the top of the solicitor table, not a London listing boom. Linklaters' 21 July 2026 announcement for the year ended 30 April 2026 put revenue at £2.47 billion, with UK profit growth of 7 percent; those are global partnership financials, cited here only as capacity to sustain Circle lockstep, not as a London solicitor wage.
Two other 2025-26 files pull in-house counsel rather than NQ lockstep. The failure-to-prevent-fraud offence in the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023 came into force on 1 September 2025 for large organizations; government departments are excluded. Ofcom's illegal-content duties page expected a register of categorized Online Safety Act services in July 2026, with Category 1 and 2A providers to supply risk-assessment records by October 2026. Davis Polk counted 12 National Security and Investment Act final orders in calendar 2025, against 15 in 2024, and advised parties in sensitive sectors to allow three to four months on longstops. A head of legal at a fund or a listed group is staffing those files inside, not waiting for an NQ class.
What 33 London associate searches actually did
Sartori & Partners has worked the London solicitor-title associate market for more than 10 years, for companies filling in-house counsel seats and for firms filling NQ-to-mid-level solicitor seats. Over the trailing three years we closed 33 associate searches, 93 percent completed, on a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks.
Of those 33 closed London associate searches over three years, 19 were solicitor-title seats into US-headquartered or dual-fluent London offices (private equity, leveraged finance, funds, disputes), 9 were Magic Circle or Silver Circle lockstep NQ or 1–3 PQE seats, and 5 were in-house counsel seats at banks, private-capital houses or listed groups.
In Sartori's London interview cohort, 186 in-house counsel and heads of legal over a 24-month window named the SRA practising certificate — not a US bar card — as the non-negotiable hire condition when the desk would sign English-law documents or conduct reserved work. Of the same cohort, 214 associates and counsel sitting in US-headquartered London offices over an 18-month window said their NQ offer had been priced off a New York dollar scale converted to sterling, not off Magic Circle lockstep. A further 142 Magic Circle and Silver Circle NQ and 1–3 PQE solicitors over 24 months said they had not seen a Circle NQ raise since the May 2024 catch-up.
A general counsel at a London-headquartered private-equity and credit house told us the desk would not put a US attorney title into a funds-counsel seat that signs English-law documents. They pay the City solicitor figure because the practising certificate is the product. A head of legal at a UK universal bank said ISDA and markets-documentation hires can wear a Counsel or Attorney label, but anything that conducts litigation or reserved instrument work has to be an England-and-Wales solicitor. Both remarks are from that cohort, roles and organization types only.
The finding that does not flatter the method: 8 of those 33 closed searches ran past the 12-week top of our typical timeline because the hiring general counsel or partnership would not decide, in the brief, whether the seat needed an SRA solicitor or would accept an RFL or US attorney for unreserved work. A further 6 of the 19 US-office solicitor mandates were re-briefed after the first shortlist because the company had budgeted a Magic Circle NQ sterling figure for a seat whose comparable US-office solicitor laterals would not move below the converted dollar scale. We do not close those files faster by repeating the Circle number.
Write the credential into the requisition before you write the number
The solicitor who earns the 2026 figure and the general counsel who pays it fail the same searches for the same reason: they negotiate cash before they specify the title.
For the company. Decide whether the seat will conduct reserved English-and-Welsh work. If it will, the hire is an SRA solicitor (or an authorized CILEX member on the Mazur supervision analysis), and a US attorney card is not a substitute. If it will not — US-law documentation, home-state advice, unreserved English-law support under a solicitor — an RFL or a clearly held-out foreign qualification may be the cheaper, faster seat. Put that decision in the first paragraph of the brief. Of the 33 searches above, the slow ones were the ones that left it open.
Price against the buyer type, not against a blended City average. An in-house mid-seniority solicitor is not an NQ and is not on the firm-tier table; the SRA in-house snapshot says the desk skews 35–44. Budget the proposed practising-certificate fee, the annual competence declaration, and insurance. SRA employer guidance is explicit that the most senior solicitor is the contact point for the regulator. Median offer-to-acceptance on Sartori's London associate line is 12 working days.
For the solicitor earning the figure. The Circle freeze since May 2024 is real on careers pages. The US London sterling ladder moved again on 1 July 2026. A 3 PQE disputes solicitor leaving a UK firm for a US London office is not taking a 2024 Circle NQ; they are walking onto a published PQE scale that did not exist in sterling at that height two years earlier. Conversion via SQE is available to qualified lawyers without qualifying work experience, and the SRA's own 29 January 2026 paper says qualified lawyers pass at lower rates. Do not treat admission as automatic.
The service view of filling the seat sits on our London associate recruiting page and, where the buyer is a company legal department, on in-house counsel recruiting in London. Partner economics are a different instrument, set out in partner pay at London law firms. The US domestic associate lockstep that several London US offices convert from is the 2026 BigLaw associate salary scale.
Questions companies and solicitors ask about 2026 London solicitor pay
How should a general counsel read a lawyer salary london figure in 2026?
Read it as a price for an England-and-Wales practising certificate, not as a generic City paycheck. Magic Circle newly qualified base is £150,000 on Clifford Chance's 2026 London careers page; Quinn Emanuel reset London NQ to £189,000 from 1 July 2026, as Legal Cheek reported on 5 June 2026. A Government Legal Profession Legal Officer band sits around £50,000 for 0 to 3 years' PQE on the live GLP recruitment page. Same title, three buyers. If the seat will conduct reserved English-law work, a US attorney card without SRA authorization does not buy those rights.
What is solicitor salary London at Magic Circle firms for a newly qualified seat?
Newly qualified base is £150,000 at A&O Shearman, Clifford Chance, Freshfields, Linklaters and Slaughter and May. Clifford Chance and A&O Shearman still publish that figure on 2026 training-contract pages; Legal Cheek's 29 September 2025 compilation shows the rest of the Circle matched after Freshfields moved from £125,000 to £150,000 on 1 May 2024. Trainee year-one / year-two at Clifford Chance is £56,000 / £61,000. This is a 2024 rate still in force, not a 2026 raise.
What is trainee solicitor salary at a US-headquartered London office versus Magic Circle?
Kirkland & Ellis publishes London trainee pay of £70,000 (year one) and £75,000 (year two) on its 2026 Legal Cheek firm card, against Clifford Chance's £56,000 / £61,000 on the firm's own 2026 careers page. Macfarlanes advertises £60,000 / £65,000 on its training page for the September 2029 intake. Trainee pay is the pipeline price; NQ is the title price.
What does NQ salary London look like at US-headquartered offices?
Legal Cheek's 29 September 2025 compilation put 18 US London offices above £170,000 NQ, with a cluster at £180,000 (Davis Polk, Gibson Dunn, Paul Weiss). Kirkland's London NQ is £175,000 as a conversion of $225,000. Quinn Emanuel then raised London NQ to £189,000 from 1 July 2026. Mayer Brown is the exception that still follows Magic Circle junior pay at £150,000. Quinn does not run a UK training contract, so those NQ seats are laterals from other firms' qualification classes.
What does a general counsel pay for an in-house solicitor versus a City NQ?
A public-sector Legal Officer band is around £50,000 and Grade 7 around £60,000 on the Government Legal Profession page. Private-sector in-house pay is not a 2026 published lockstep; the SRA's 25 April 2023 snapshot put 66 percent of 33,584 in-house solicitors in the private sector, with the age peak at 35–44, so the typical company hire is a mid-seniority solicitor, not an NQ. Budget the practising certificate (£382 proposed for 2026/27), independence, and insurance — not only base.
How long does a London solicitor associate search take, and what breaks it?
Sartori's London associate desk works to a typical 6 to 12 week timeline, with a 93 percent completion rate on 33 closed searches over three years and a median 12 working days from offer to acceptance. The searches that ran past 12 weeks were the ones where the brief would not decide whether the seat needed an SRA solicitor or would accept a registered foreign lawyer for unreserved work. Counter-offer incidence on this line is 35 percent.

SRA monthly stock is England and Wales, not a London solicitor census. Legal Cheek NQ figures are published bases compiled from firms, not an ONS earnings distribution. Quinn Emanuel's 1 July 2026 ladder is a reported firm scale. Macfarlanes £150,000 qualification is a 2029-intake advertisement. GLP Legal Officer and Grade 7 figures are indicative and location-dependent. TheCityUK 133,000 figure counts legal-services jobs, all occupations. Linklaters and A&O Shearman financials are global.
Interview reads, closed-search counts, counter-offer incidence and offer-to-acceptance windows come from the research program on our research page. Sartori maps nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles globally. How we run a search is on methodology.

Putting a solicitor on a London payroll?
We close solicitor-title associate seats for general counsel, chief legal officers and heads of legal who need England-and-Wales capacity, and for the firms that train and pay the same title. Confidential, no obligation.
