Wachtell Salary 2026: Associate Scale, Bonus and Partner Pay

On 15 April 2026 the Am Law 100 put 2025 profits per equity partner at $12.152 million. The 2026 associate class-year grid is not public. This page is for the partner who earns the cell and the general counsel who pays the invoice.

Above the Law, recapping the 2026 Am Law 100 on 15 April 2026, put 2025 profits per equity partner at $12.152 million, up 34.48 percent, first in the United States. It is an ALM average, not a paycheck. First in the Am Law 100. Not take-home.

Year sits inside every dollar cell. A 2026 Wachtell associate class-year grid and a 2025–2026 bonus percentage are not public. Every number is cited below.

Across 1675 structured interviews with New York partners and counsel, the first question from a general counsel was not prestige. It was which 2026 cell of Wachtell salary they were being asked to fund. Coverage of the New York market runs to roughly 67,000 mapped lawyers. The four lenses above are the dated public answers. Everything else on this page is either a finding from Sartori’s New York associate desk or a public document with a year in the same sentence as the number.

02 The partner cell

Profits per partner is an average, not a paycheck

The 2026 Am Law 100 reset the partner-side meaning of the phrase. The cell is 2025 results, published in April 2026, and it is the number a board will google.

What the partner earnsWhat the company funds

  1. Equity average Profits divided by equity owners. Useful as a ranking. Silent on spread, capital calls, holdbacks and who actually originated the work.
  2. Associate grid Class-year lockstep the market publishes and this firm does not. The people who staff the mandate live here; the PEP cell does not pay them.
  3. The invoice A value-billed fee the general counsel, the special committee or the compensation committee actually authorizes. That is the company’s number.

Above the Law, recapping the 2026 Am Law 100 on 15 April 2026, put 2025 profits per equity partner at $12.152 million, up 34.48 percent year over year, first among the Am Law 100. Kirkland & Ellis sat second at $11.121 million for 2025. The same recap put revenue per lawyer at $5.085 million for 2025, up 13.71 percent, also first, on a comparatively modest 272-lawyer platform. Product of those two published cells is about $1.383 billion of implied 2025 gross; that product is derived from the two ATL cells, not a ALM gross-revenue ranking.

Original Jurisdiction, on 18 June 2026, put 2025 Am Law 100 average PEP at $3.59 million. Against that denominator the Wachtell cell is more than three times the average. Am Law 100 PEP as a group rose 14 percent in 2025, per the same April recap. The gap is the point a chief legal officer needs, and it is not a raise letter.

Bloomberg Law, on 11 May 2026, corroborated that Wachtell partners earned more than $12 million in average profits last year, and recorded that the partnership shrank by more than 8 percent in 2025, more than any elite New York firm. The public 2025 fact is the rate of contraction, not an equity-partner integer. Single-tier lockstep remains the firm’s public description, in the Chambers Global 2026 overview and in that May reporting.

The 2026 partner-exit wave sits next to the PEP print, not inside it. Bloomberg Law, on 29 July 2026, reported that the firm had lost at least a dozen partners since 1 January 2026. A six-partner litigation group, including an executive-committee co-chair, joined a nationwide New York litigation platform on 29 July 2026, per that platform’s own announcement. A firm spokesperson told Bloomberg the platform was having a record year and performing at its highest level across every metric. Destination employers of those who left were other Am Law New York platforms, not corporate legal departments. The general counsel remains the buyer of the fee, not the typical next employer of the partner who just earned the cell.

Profits per partner is an accounting average. Anyone selling the 2026 cell as a paycheck is counting on the reader not asking who sits in the denominator.

03 The associate gap

Wachtell Lipton salary is missing from the 2026 scorecard

The lockstep a general counsel treats as the New York market is a Milbank memorandum. The firm-specific 2026 class-year grid is not public. The dated substitute is a Department of Labor base.

The 2026 market (Milbank) base ladder, effective 1 July 2026. Context for the New York lockstep a general counsel treats as market — not a Wachtell class-year grid. The firm does not appear on the public matching scorecard.

Milbank memorandum to associates, 2 June 2026, hosted by Above the Law; effective 1 July 2026.

Milbank’s memorandum to associates, dated 2 June 2026 and effective 1 July 2026, set first-year base at $235,000 and eighth-year base at $455,000, with the 2026/2025 increase also applying to then-current summer associates. Above the Law’s Associate Compensation Scorecard, dated 5 June 2026 and updated through at least 31 August 2026 on the page, lists Milbank as first mover and records matches including McDermott, Quinn Emanuel and Sullivan & Cromwell. Wachtell does not appear in that raises table. The market-wide lockstep lives on our BigLaw associate salary scale for 2026; this page does not restate it as this firm’s thesis.

Business Insider, on 2 January 2026, reproduced a 20 November 2025 Paul Weiss memorandum: 2025 year-end plus special ran $20,000 plus $6,000 for the class of 2024, and $115,000 plus $25,000 for the class of 2018 and senior. Davis Polk told the same outlet it paid bonuses of up to $140,000, in line with the industry-standard Cravath scale. Those dollars are the matching-firm bonus grid a head of legal will see in a New York offer letter. They are not Wachtell’s 2025 or 2026 bonus.

What is public for this firm, as a base, is a sponsored subset. Aggregator Ellis, last updated April 2026 and sourced to Department of Labor Labor Condition Application disclosures, lists five certified 2026 Corporate Associate filings in New York: four at $230,000 filed 23 April 2026 and one at $315,000 filed 30 April 2026. 2025 filings include $230,000, $240,000, $265,000 and $425,000 for Corporate Associate and Associate titles. A single certified LCA, case I-200-25111-886493, submitted 21 April 2025 and certified 28 April 2025, attests a Corporate Associate at 51 West 52nd Street, New York, NY 10019, wage-rate-from $240,000 per year, prevailing wage $153,254 under the OES window 1 July 2024 to 30 June 2025, wage level II. An LCA wage-rate-from is the wage the employer attested, which must be at least the actual wage paid to similarly situated workers or the prevailing wage, whichever is higher. It is a base, not bonus, not PEP, and not a class-year grid. The four April 2026 filings at $230,000 predate the 1 July 2026 market raise.

The firm’s own careers pages, accessed 11 September 2026, carry no dollars. Associates work directly with partners on a low ratio of associates to partners; the majority of current associates were former summer associates; laterals and judicial clerks are considered. The 2027 2L summer portal opens 1 December and closes 6 February; a small 1L program does not make offers at the end of the 1L summer. Chambers Global 2026 still describes lock-step compensation as the device that promotes a careful selection of matters. That is hiring-channel evidence, not a 2026 scale.

The empty scorecard row is the finding.
On the unpublished grid
04 Who pays

The general counsel funds the cell the partner earns

The earning seat is one New York law-firm office. The invoice sits with a public-company general counsel, a chief legal officer, a board committee, or a special committee — not with a panel rotation.

Management’s preferred panelIndependent retainer

  1. General counsel / CLO The named client on a combination, an activism defense, or a restructuring. Deputies for corporate secretary, securities, bank regulatory and litigation staff the company side.
  2. Audit committee Where a serious investigation is handled by outside counsel, direct reports to the board or the audit committee are the design the firm’s own 2024 Audit Committee Guide describes.
  3. Compensation committee NYSE listing standards give the committee sole discretion to retain independent legal counsel, funded by the company, without going through management’s panel.

Of 33 closed New York associate searches over three years, 14 were M&A or corporate seats at elite New York platforms where the hiring partner treated an unpublished Wachtell-adjacent premium as the real comparator and did not have a memo to cite. That is mandate telemetry on the associate line, not a search into the firm itself. Across the same New York interview cohort, 71 of 118 general counsel and deputy general counsel sitting inside U.S. public-company legal departments over a 24-month window said they budget elite New York M&A as a success-fee engagement, not as an hourly rate card.

A general counsel at a NYSE-listed financial institution, in that 118-person cut, put it without romance: the PEP cell is what the audit committee reads, not what anyone deposits. A head of legal at a mega-cap technology issuer, from the same window, said the company will pay a success fee on a one-off combination and will not use the $12 million average to set in-house bands.

Chambers USA 2026 Corporate/M&A: The Elite names the client base as foremost public companies and financial institutions. The firm’s own overview, hosted on that Chambers page, says it counsels both public and private acquirors and targets. A Texas Lawbook feature dated 1 February 2026 on a $10.9 billion bank combination is the clean in-house org chart: a chief legal officer; a deputy general counsel who also served as corporate secretary; a deputy for bank regulatory work (Federal Reserve and OCC submissions); a divisional general counsel on the merger agreement, SEC filings and merger proxy; a deputy for litigation; a products deputy on vendor diligence; a vice president of regulatory affairs. The department ran about 40 in-house lawyers. The combination closed 23 January 2026 after Fed, OCC, shareholder and Delaware Court of Chancery steps in four months. Individuals are not named here; the type is the finding — a Texas-headquartered, NYSE-listed regional bank holding company buying a four-month, multi-regulator combination.

The Harvard Law School Forum, on 10 September 2025, carried a Wachtell memorandum on activist hedge funds that names chief legal officers, general counsel and boards of directors as the client of activism defense. NYSE Listed Company Manual § 303A.05(c), the Dodd-Frank compensation-committee rule, gives a listed-company compensation committee sole discretion to retain independent legal counsel; the company must fund reasonable advisor fees; in-house counsel is exempt from the independence assessment. The firm’s 2026 Compensation Committee Guide treats proxy season as a collaboration among management, the committee, the consultant and external legal counsel. That is a standing budget line for the invoice-payer, separate from deal volume.

The earning seat itself is one office. Careers pages accessed 11 September 2026 and Chambers Global 2026 list 51 West 52nd Street, New York, NY 10019, and no second city. The litigation practice page describes a tight-knit group of approximately 75 lawyers covering deal litigation, corporate governance, white collar, securities and bankruptcy litigation, investigations, trials and appeals. Practice labels Chambers USA 2026 actually ranks include Corporate/M&A: The Elite and Takeover Defense, Litigation: Securities (Band 2 in New York), Litigation: General Commercial: The Elite, White-Collar Crime & Government Investigations: The Elite, Tax: Corporate & Finance, Antitrust, Bankruptcy/Restructuring: The Elite, Employee Benefits & Executive Compensation, and Financial Services Regulation: Financial Institutions M&A.

New York admission is the license for that seat: UBE passing score 266, NYLE 30 of 50, MPRE 85, the 50-hour pro bono rule for applicants seeking admission after 1 January 2015, and Skills Competency Rule 520.18, per the New York State Board of Law Examiners guide revised 4 September 2026 and 22 NYCRR § 6000.3. Delaware Court of Chancery civil filings must be made by an attorney licensed to practice in Delaware, so New York litigators associate Delaware counsel or hold a Delaware ticket. Those gates belong to the people who earn the figure. They are not the general counsel’s hiring problem, unless the company is trying to build an in-house Chancery capability it does not have.

The company does not buy a rate card

A chief legal officer who converts PEP into an hourly cap is arguing with a 2012 method the firm has not replaced in public.

Illustrative 2020–2022 total fees from the firm’s own court-file memorandum, as reported by Bloomberg Law on 11 July 2023, with the 2022 engagement Reuters reported at $90 million on 12 July 2023. These are dated illustrations, not a 2026 rate card.

Bloomberg Law, 11 July 2023 ↗

The last primary fee-band document is the 16 January 2012 engagement letter and attached Billing and Retention Policies, a DocumentCloud scan of the CVR Energy file. Fees are not on time, but on the intensity of the firm’s efforts, the responsibility assumed, the complexity of the matter and the result achieved. While fees are not based on the amount involved, experience indicated that merger and acquisition and takeover fees had typically ranged 1 percent or more on matters under $250 million and 0.1 of 1 percent or less on matters over $25 billion. The firm does not furnish long-form descriptions of services or details as to particular lawyers and hours. Typical partner-to-associate ratio in that document is described as one to one. Initial fee on that 2012 matter: $200,000. It is not a 2026 rate card.

Reuters, on 12 July 2023, reported that X Corp. sued over a $90 million payment on a roughly 19-week 2022 engagement; a firm spokesperson called the fee entirely appropriate and expressly approved by Twitter’s board. 2022 timekeeper exhibits in that reporting showed of-counsel at $2,000 an hour and 2020 J.D. associates at $725 an hour, with rates rising $100 per hour per class year. Those hourly figures are 2022 exhibits. Bloomberg Law, on 11 July 2023, reported a firm memo in the court file stating the firm often received a fee in the range of 60 to 80 percent of the fees paid to investment advisors; seven 2020–2022 representations ranged from 67 percent to 100 percent of the investment-bank fees; total fee amounts in the illustrative matters ranged from approximately $33 million to $134 million.

Leverage is the structural reason the invoice can look like that on a small platform. The 2012 policies described a one-to-one partner-to-associate ratio. Bloomberg Law, on 23 October 2024, described an unusually lean 2-to-1 associate-to-partner ratio. Careers pages and Chambers Global 2026 say only “low ratio.” Three differently dated descriptions, not a 2026 census. The method decouples associate hours from revenue, which is why a 272-lawyer platform can print $5.085 million of revenue per lawyer for 2025. A general counsel who refuses success fees is a collection risk, not a hiring freeze at the firm.

Bloomberg Law league tables, in the 11 May 2026 piece, put the firm at $230 billion of M&A in the first quarter of 2026. Reuters, on 8 January 2026, citing LSEG, placed Wachtell among four firms that served as principal adviser on $600 billion or more of 2025 deals. Through three quarters of 2024, Bloomberg Law reported on 23 October 2024, the firm advised on $169 billion across about 40 transactions. Those are announced deal values, not fees collected. They size the demand that pays the PEP cell. They do not substitute for a 2026 invoice.

What is making and unmaking the seats that pay these cells

A short list of dated instruments is moving senior corporate, Chancery, bank-regulatory and antitrust work. Associate headcount is not the relief valve; leverage stays low.

Statute and forumVolume and price

  1. Controller and Chancery rules Statutory safe harbors recast special-committee and going-private work. Procedure modernizations retrain the File & ServeXpress desk; they do not add headcount.
  2. Bank, CFIUS, HSR A 2025 bank-merger thaw, a golden-share inbound precedent, and an HSR threshold that sits below this platform’s typical tickets. Senior counseling, not a first-year surge.
  3. The volume that pays PEP Mega-deal announced value fills every corporate, tax, antitrust and deal-litigation seat. The same small associate pool absorbs the hours.
Announced M&A value that sizes 2025–2026 demand for the desks that print these compensation cells. Deal value is not a legal fee.

LSEG, 9 June 2026 and 12 August 2026; Reuters citing LSEG, 8 January 2026; Bloomberg Law, 11 May 2026.

LSEG, on 9 June 2026, put global announced M&A in 2025 at $4.6 trillion, up 49 percent from 2024, highest since 2021, with 68 mega-deals above $10 billion. LSEG, on 12 August 2026, put January–July 2026 global announced value at $3.19 trillion, up 36 percent year on year, with U.S. targets at $1.69 trillion in those seven months, the strongest opening seven months on record; deal count was down 10 percent. The Harvard Law School Forum, on 20 May 2026, carried a Wachtell takeover-law memorandum putting 2025 U.S. M&A volume above $2.3 trillion, up 58 percent, with four U.S. deals above $40 billion, hostile and unsolicited around 7.5 percent of global 2025 M&A, private-equity deal volume around $2.1 trillion, and technology around 19 percent of global volume.

Delaware Senate Bill 21, signed March 2025, amended DGCL § 144 to create statutory safe harbors for controlling-stockholder transactions: an informed majority of a committee with at least two disinterested directors, or a majority of fully informed disinterested minority stockholders; going-private transactions require both. The Delaware Supreme Court, en banc, on 27 February 2026 in Rutledge v. Clearway Energy Group LLC, held that the amendments do not divest the Court of Chancery of equitable jurisdiction and that retroactivity does not violate due process. Hiring consequence for 2026: more senior corporate and Chancery work on special-committee composition and dual-cleansing for going-privates; possible thinning of entire-fairness trial volume on non-go-private controller deals that hit one safe harbor. Junior discovery seats may thin; the committee process still needs mid-level corporate associates.

Bank-merger policy reversed from 2024 into 2025. The Department of Justice, on 17 September 2024, withdrew from the 1995 Bank Merger Guidelines. Jones Day, on 31 July 2025, recorded May 2025 FDIC and OCC rescissions of 2024 policy statements and a Congressional Review Act joint resolution locking the OCC shift. The Federal Reserve and OCC approved Capital One/Discover on 18 April 2025. The HLS May 2026 memorandum called 2025 a sea change in regulatory receptivity for bank consolidation. The $10.9 billion regional combination in the February 2026 Texas Lawbook account closed in four months after that thaw. Immediate 2025–2026 demand sits with senior Financial Institutions M&A partners, bank-regulatory counsel, and antitrust who can run a dual 1995-Fed / 2023-DOJ analysis. The window is administration-sensitive.

A 13 June 2025 presidential order under Defense Production Act § 721 reopened a blocked cross-border steel combination on a national-security agreement that includes a perpetual golden share. Weil, on 17 July 2025, treated it as the first presidential reopening of a CFIUS review closed by a prior President. That is senior CFIUS and corporate-governance work on politically sensitive inbounds, not a first-year staffing surge. The FTC, on 20 January 2026, set the HSR size-of-transaction threshold at $133.9 million effective 17 February 2026. This platform’s core book sits far above that line; the adjustment does not create or kill the desk. It does matter for antitrust associates counseling the edge of reportability and for acquihire structuring after January 2026 FTC Chair remarks on AI-sector talent deals, as WilmerHale reported on 30 January 2026.

Shareholder activism is no longer seasonal. The 10 September 2025 HLS memorandum described wolf-pack and multi-year campaigns and an accelerated-settlement effect under universal proxy. The 20 May 2026 memorandum put M&A theses in 54 percent of second-half 2025 campaigns against 35 percent in the first half, and in 61 percent of fourth-quarter 2025 campaigns, a five-year high. That is year-round demand for senior takeover-defense partners and for corporate associates on rights plans, advance-notice bylaws and vulnerability analyses. A May 6, 2026 pair of District of Massachusetts indictments alleged a decade-long leak of M&A material non-public information from premier firms’ document systems; prosecutors characterized the firms as sources of stolen information, not as defendants, and a spokesperson said the responsible party had left more than four years earlier with no allegations of wrongdoing against the firm. That is an investigations overlay, not M&A origination seats.

07 How to use it

Two readers, one dated page, a company conversation at the close

We have worked in the New York market for more than 10 years, for general counsel and for law-firm hiring partners on associate seats. The figures above only help if each reader uses the cell that belongs to them.

Over the trailing three years Sartori’s New York associate desk closed 33 searches, with a 93 percent completion rate, a 37 percent counter-offer incidence, a median of 11 working days from offer to acceptance, and a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks. Of those 33 closed files, none were into Wachtell’s own associate class. The summer-majority pipeline does not generate the lateral files our mandate book is built on. Nine of the 33 ran past the 12-week mark when the candidate’s expected bonus was framed as a percentage of base and the client had only the published lockstep dollar grid to answer with. We cannot see this firm’s 2026 bonus percentage either.

Two composites from that same New York associate book. An Am Law 50 New York corporate group retained us on a year-four to year-six M&A associate seat after a candidate, already inside another elite platform, asked for a bonus shaped as a percentage of base. The file closed in nine weeks; a counter-offer arrived inside the 37 percent incidence this desk records, and the 11-day acceptance window still held once the client stopped trying to translate a Wachtell-shaped ask into the Milbank dollar grid. A second file, a securities-litigation associate with a Delaware Court of Chancery clerkship, accepted in eight working days; the complication was conflicts screening against a live takeover docket, not compensation. A third file did not close: the hiring partner would not move off the published year-end bonus scale, the candidate would not move off a percentage-of-base frame, and the search stalled at week fourteen.

Your number is the invoice, not the PEP cell, and it will not arrive as a rate card.

  • Price the matter, not the average. The 2012 bands and the 2020–2022 illustrations are the public method. The $12.152 million cell is what your board will google; it is not your fee.
  • Staff the company side first. The $10.9 billion bank combination ran through a chief legal officer and five deputy seats inside a roughly 40-lawyer department. Outside counsel does not replace those titles.
  • Use the committee retainer. NYSE § 303A.05(c) is a standing independent-counsel line. It is not a deal extra.
  • Do not price bands off PEP. Opportunity cost for a New York junior is the published $235,000 floor, not $12 million divided by twelve.
  • Brief the board on both clocks. Signing a combination in four months after the 2025 bank-merger thaw is a regulatory clock; filling the deputy GC who will live with the integration is a hiring clock of 6 to 12 weeks on this desk.

Your public number is either an ALM average or an empty scorecard row. Do not negotiate the empty row as if it were filled.

  • Read PEP as a ranking. $12.152 million for 2025 is first in the Am Law 100. It is not your draw, and a lateral conversation at another New York platform will not pay it as a guarantee just because the cell exists.
  • Treat the associate grid as unpublished. Compare offers against the Milbank lockstep and against any LCA base you can actually document. Do not invent a bonus percentage from 2007.
  • Expect the counter. New York associate counter-offer incidence on this desk is 37 percent. An 11-day median from offer to acceptance is the window, not a leisurely auction.
  • Next seat is another firm. 2026 partner destinations in the public reporting were Am Law New York platforms. In-house is the buyer of the fee, not the typical next employer of the person who just earned the cell.
  • Explore without a press release. Our associate recruiting desk runs New York files on a no-names basis; the 2026 partner-salary map is the sibling for the equity conversation this page does not reopen.

The company conversation is the close. A general counsel, chief legal officer or head of legal who is about to fund one of these mandates — or who is trying to hire the in-house deputy who will sit opposite it — can start that conversation on our in-house counsel recruiting page or by writing the New York associate desk from the hiring form. The research program behind the New York figures is set out on our research page.

Common questions about 2026 partner pay, associate scale and the invoice

What is Wachtell salary in 2026?

In 2026 it is $12.152 million of 2025 profits per equity partner, not a published associate class-year grid. Above the Law, recapping the 2026 Am Law 100 on 15 April 2026, put that PEP cell first in the United States, up 34.48 percent year over year. The associate scale Wachtell actually pays is not in a public 2026 memorandum; the dated public substitutes are Department of Labor Labor Condition Applications with New York associate wage-rate-from figures from $230,000 to $425,000. A general counsel reading the same phrase is looking at a value-billed invoice, last measured at $90 million on a 2022 engagement, not at anyone’s W-2.

What is Wachtell Lipton salary for associates this year?

The firm has not published a 2026 class-year grid; certified New York LCAs attest bases from $230,000 to $425,000. Four Corporate Associate filings certified on 23 April 2026 sit at $230,000, which predates the 1 July 2026 market raise. The lockstep floor most New York general counsel treat as “market” is Milbank’s 2 June 2026 memorandum — $235,000 for the 2026/2025 class through $455,000 for the 2018 class, effective 1 July 2026. Above the Law’s matching scorecard, updated through 31 August 2026, does not list Wachtell. Absence from that table is not proof the firm pays below market; it is proof the firm-specific grid is not public.

How much is Wachtell partner salary versus profits per partner?

Profits per partner of $12.152 million for 2025 is an ALM average, not any partner’s take-home. It is firm profit divided by equity owners. Bloomberg Law, on 11 May 2026, corroborated the “more than $12 million” band and recorded that the partnership shrank by more than 8 percent in 2025. A general counsel who treats the cell as a paycheck will mis-price both the partner who earns it and the invoice that funds it. The companion page on what partners really make at the Am Law top 50 owns the PEP-is-not-pay argument for the market; this page owns this firm’s 2026 cells.

Did Wachtell match the $235,000 Milbank scale in 2026?

No public 2026 Wachtell memo appears on Above the Law’s scorecard, updated through 31 August 2026. Milbank set first-year base at $235,000 and eighth-year base at $455,000 on 2 June 2026, effective 1 July 2026. McDermott, Quinn Emanuel and Sullivan & Cromwell are among the firms that scorecard lists as matching. This page does not fill Wachtell’s empty row by adding a round number to that scale, and it does not double base to invent a bonus. The 2026 Wachtell bonus percentage is not public.

What does a general counsel actually pay this firm?

The last primary fee document is the 2012 Billing and Retention Policies; a 2022 engagement produced a $90 million fee. Those 2012 policies, still the document reproduced in the 2023 X Corp. litigation, bill on intensity, responsibility, complexity and result, not hours, with illustrative bands of 1 percent or more on matters under $250 million and 0.1 of 1 percent or less on matters over $25 billion. Bloomberg Law, on 11 July 2023, reported the firm’s own 2020–2022 illustrations at $33 million to $134 million, often 60 to 80 percent of the investment-bank fee. There is no published 2026 rate card.

How should an in-house legal department budget a Wachtell mandate?

Budget it as a success-fee in the tens of millions: 2020–2022 illustrations ran $33 million to $134 million. A chief legal officer who converts the $12.152 million PEP cell into an hourly cap will be arguing with a 2012 method the firm still describes as lock-step matter selection, not time. NYSE Listed Company Manual § 303A.05(c) already gives a listed-company compensation committee its own independent-counsel retainer; that is a standing budget line, separate from deal volume. PEP, RPL and the 272-lawyer census are 2025 Am Law year cells published in April 2026. LCA wage-rate-from figures are attested bases for a sponsored New York subset, not a class-year grid. Fee bands are 2012 method and 2020–2022 illustrations, not a 2026 rate card. Deal values are announced M&A, not fees collected. Historical bonus percentages (2007–2012) describe method only.

Our own numbers — the New York interview cohort, the 33 closed associate searches, the 37 percent counter-offer incidence and the 11-day offer-to-acceptance window — come from the continuous research program described on our research page, which sets out the cohorts, the survey waves running since 2019, and the mapping coverage behind every Sartori figure quoted above.
