White & Case Salary 2026: New York Class-Year vs London NQ

A New York first-year and a London newly qualified solicitor at the same firm do not take home the same 2026 cash. This page is the dated table for the lawyer who earns that paycheck and the general counsel who has to match it.

02 Two payrolls

White & Case salary: who earns it, who pays it

The associate in New York or the newly qualified solicitor in London earns the table. The general counsel at a private-capital sponsor, energy operator, bank or $5 billion-plus corporate pays it — as a firm invoice or as matched in-house cash.

Earned inside the firmPaid by the company

  1. Earn The associate or newly qualified solicitor is on White & Case payroll. Class-year lockstep in New York; PQE lockstep through 2 PQE in London.
  2. Invoice The general counsel buys the same work as outside counsel. Cross-border files are the majority of the firm’s reported mix.
  3. Match The chief legal officer brings the lawyer in-house and has to clear a band that can live next to the table, or lose the hire.

White & Case LLP, founded in New York in 1901, is the named payroll. The New York office at 1221 Avenue of the Americas holds almost 500 lawyers, the firm’s first and largest, with particular strength in mergers and acquisitions, private capital, capital markets, debt finance, commercial litigation and international arbitration, as the office page still states in 2026. London at 5 Old Broad Street, established in 1971, holds more than 400 lawyers and advises financial institutions, companies and government bodies. The United States platform is more than 1,000 lawyers across Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Silicon Valley and Washington, DC. Perspective 2025 adds 70 Band 1 rankings in Chambers Global 2025 and 10 Band 1 rankings in Chambers USA 2025, from the firm’s own annual-review block, not from a careers-community table.

That is the earner’s map. The payer’s map is a legal department. Association of Corporate Counsel and Empsight International’s 2025 Law Department Compensation Survey drew 1,632 self-reported U.S. in-house respondents, data effective 1 March 2025. Large companies with revenue of $5 billion or more pay chief legal officers 44 percent more base and 173 percent more total target compensation than CLOs at companies under $1 billion. Associate General Counsel median base is 36 percent higher at those large companies, and the AGC total-compensation gap is 75 percent. The in-house match to New York class-year cash is an AGC, deputy GC or CLO problem. It is not a first-title Attorney problem.

U.S. in-house median bases from the ACC / Empsight 2025 survey (effective 1 March 2025), set against the large-company CLO total-target mark. This is the company payroll a general counsel uses to decide whether White & Case New York cash is matchable. Click a marker for the source.

The New York associate and the London NQ are not on the same credential path, and the cash table does not hide that.

  • New York admission runs through an Appellate Division department. The examination route requires Court of Appeals Rules 520.3 to 520.6 or 520.17, a passing UBE, NYLE and MPRE, a filing within three years of the second day of the UBE, and 50 hours of pro bono before applying, as the New York State Board of Law Examiners still sets it in 2026. The primary academic route is a JD from an ABA-approved law school.
  • London qualification is the Solicitors Regulation Authority SQE route: any-subject degree or level-6 equivalent, SQE1 and SQE2, two years’ qualifying work experience, and suitability checks. White & Case runs that QWE as a two-year training contract after an 11-month SQE Plus with the University of Law, and recruits about 50 trainees a year. Four six-month seats include one overseas seat and one in Finance. The firm’s training-contract page, accessed in 2026, records 86 percent retention of trainees qualifying in 2025, a £17,000 PGDL grant plus fees, and a £20,000 SQE grant.
  • United States entry is a ten-week summer, with week one Launch Your Career in the New York office for the entire U.S. class, then eight recruiting desks: Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Silicon Valley and Washington, DC. 2028 summer applications open 1 November. The U.S. summer weekly rate is not public for this firm, so it is not on the table.

The general counsel who can match this cash is buying M&A, private credit, projects or arbitration, not a generic “in-house lawyer.”

  • Private-capital sponsors sit on both sides of the table: they hire White & Case on carve-outs and credit, and they staff Associate General Counsel desks that have to live next to New York class-year cash. Global Legal Post, 19 March 2026, records a global private capital group built around wraparound work for named client types including Macquarie Asset Management, Blackstone and CVC.
  • Energy and infrastructure operators are the same pattern. On 25 September 2025 the firm advised co-investors in a Blackstone Credit & Insurance-led consortium on a $7 billion minority equity investment in Sempra Infrastructure Partners’ Port Arthur LNG Phase 2, with Project Development and Finance, Debt Finance, Capital Markets and M&A seats across Chicago, London, New York and Houston.
  • Data-center buyers formalized as a dedicated industry group in 2025, per Global Legal Post, with a London Real Estate partner in the 2026 class focused on that work. Client types on the practice page include hyperscale developers, a sovereign wealth fund, a listed REIT and bank lenders. A Madrid-headquartered integrated multi-energy company posted an Associate General Counsel (M&A, Finance and Corporate) seat in Downtown Houston on 13 August 2026 requiring an ABA-accredited JD, at least ten years in renewables M&A and finance, and eligibility to work for any U.S. employer without sponsorship — a company-side M&A/finance seat in the same Houston energy market, not a law-firm associate scale.

Seventy-seven percent of ACC / Empsight 2025 respondents had law-firm experience before going in-house, and attorneys with that experience earn 16 percent more base. Securities and antitrust are the specialties with the highest in-house cash in that survey — the same labels that appear on White & Case’s 2026 partner class.

Matching New York class-year cash was the only way the desk kept mid-level M&A counsel from walking back to the firm.

03 The anatomy

New York class-year cash and London NQ are not the same instrument.

One firm, two locksteps, one FX line. The general counsel who treats them as interchangeable will mis-price either the invoice or the in-house offer.

JD Journal, 6 December 2023, reported that White & Case aligned with the United States associate scale from $225,000 for first-year associates to $435,000 for the most senior. Above the Law, 5 December 2023, recorded the same announcement; the class-year grid sat in an image that did not render as numbers. The published endpoints are those two figures.

That December 2023 match adopted the then-market grid. The ABA Journal, 19 November 2025, quoting Cravath, stated that base salaries for associates will remain the same at Cravath in 2026, with the Class of 2025 at $225,000. That is Cravath’s published 2026 base, not a White & Case memo. It is the grid the 2023 White & Case match adopted. Treat it as context for why Labor Condition Applications still print $225,000, not as this firm’s 2026 announcement.

The bonus side is narrower. Staci Zaretsky’s Above the Law 2025 bonus scorecard, updated as firms matched, records White & Case at Class of 2025 $15,000 / $6,000 (prorated) and Class of 2018 $115,000 / $25,000, matched 21 November 2025, paid 13 February 2026. Combined senior bonus from those two rungs is $140,000. Middle class years are not printed on the White & Case row; they exist on the Cravath row in the same ABA Journal list. The full eight-rung bonus grid is Cravath’s. White & Case’s tracker row publishes two endpoints.

London is a different instrument. Legal Cheek, 1 August 2024, and The Lawyer the same day, reported the firm raising London NQ pay from £150,000 to £175,000, first-year trainees from £56,000 to £62,000, second-years from £61,000 to £67,000, 1 PQE from £158,500 to £185,500 and 2 PQE from £171,000 to £200,000, live from 1 January 2025. The Lawyer added that lawyers between three and nine PQE are subject to discretionary rises, with no public grid, and a discretionary bonus on top. The firm’s London careers page, still live in 2026, restates £62,000 on year one of the training contract and £175,000 on qualification.

Convert that NQ figure at a dated rate, not a round one. The Bank of England daily spot against sterling on 30 September 2026 was $1.3285 to the pound. £175,000 × 1.3285 = $232,487.50. London NQ base therefore sits $7,487.50 above the last confirmed New York first-year base of $225,000. It is still below New York first-year cash if a Class of 2025 associate received the matched year-end plus special bonus in full — $15,000 plus $6,000 on top of $225,000 — but those bonus dollars are prorated and belong to the 2025 class year, not to a 2026 first-year who had not yet sat through that bonus season.

London NQ base, at the 30 September 2026 Bank of England spot, is $7,487.50 above the last confirmed New York first-year base.

04 The gaps

A 2026 White & Case United States base above $225,000 is not a public figure.

The July 2026 market reset is real. White & Case matching it is not. Above the Law’s raise scorecard does not name the firm; its latest raise row is Troutman Pepper Locke on 17 September 2026.

Partner lockstep No — PEP is an average An average across the equity tier, not a newly elected partner’s lockstep

The 2026 New York check that is public is not a memo. It is a stack of certified Labor Condition Applications filed with the U.S. Department of Labor. Ellis’s compilation of White & Case LLP OFLC filings, accessed 11 September 2026, shows 116 certified LCA filings in 2025 and 61 in 2026 on that extract, with a median H-1B salary of $225,000. Individual certified New York associate or law-clerk-associate offered wages in 2026 include $225,000 (filings on 13 February, 25 March, 9 April and 12 May 2026), $235,000 (8 May 2026), $260,000 (23 January, 25 March, 13 April, 12 May, 9 June and 17 June 2026), $310,000, $365,000, $390,000, $420,000, and one New York Associate at $450,000 on 23 January 2026.

Those are offered wages on certified LCAs, not USCIS approvals and not a complete associate census. They corroborate the $225,000 / $235,000 / $260,000 / $310,000 / $365,000 / $390,000 / $420,000 lockstep rungs into mid-2026. The $450,000 filing is a single observation above the last public eighth-year rung of $435,000; it is not a published ninth-year scale. The $235,000 LCA on 8 May 2026 is an offered wage on one filing, not the July 2026 market reset.

05 The P&L

The 2025 P&L that still writes the 2026 checks.

Associate lockstep and a £175,000 London NQ are paid out of a partnership that grew lawyers, cut equity partners, and booked a record M&A year.

U.S. scale matchMarket reset, firm absent

  1. U.S. scale match The firm announced alignment with the then-market United States associate scale. Endpoints only, in the text.
  2. London NQ live Sterling lockstep through 2 PQE takes effect. The careers page still carries it.
  3. U.S. bonus match Year-end plus special, two published rungs, paid the following February.
  4. Market reset A rival firm moves the United States floor. This firm is not on the matcher table the scorecard still lists.

White & Case’s own Perspective: 2025 block, accessed 11 September 2026, reports annual revenue of $3.59 billion, 2,643 total lawyers, 693 total partners, 51 new lateral partners, 43 offices and 29 countries. The 2026 Am Law 100 gross-revenue rank sits in the figures above. Treat $3.6 billion in the legal press as the round of the firm figure.

Global Legal Post, 19 March 2026, is the dated P&L read: 2025 revenue up 8.5 percent; PEP up 10 percent; revenue per lawyer up 6 percent to $1.4 million; net income up 4.8 percent to $1.5 billion; expenses up 10 percent to $1.8 billion; 50 percent of work cross-border; total lawyers up 1.7 percent; total partners down 0.7 percent. Five-year growth: revenue up 51 percent, PEP up 46 percent, RPL up 29 percent. The firm has a $5 billion revenue target in 2028. Legal Business, the same day, corroborates the PEP, RPL, revenue and 2028 target.

Subtract the equity-partner count in the figures above from 693 total partners and the non-equity partnership is 361 people. Lawyer headcount rose while the equity tier fell for a second year. That is the leverage that funds a $225,000–$435,000 United States grid and a £175,000 London NQ. Partner seats are not expanding with headcount. The 26 November 2025 release names counsel as usually an alternative career path to partnership, and local partner as a step used in selected jurisdictions only: Mexico; Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Middle East, Poland, South Africa, Spain; China, Japan, Korea.

Perspective 2025 also records Atlas, a firm-built tool that does not train on client data, a Legora strategic partnership, a Responsible AI Committee folded into Global Risk Management, and Momentum as the associate-development program. Human review of work product is described as non-negotiable. That stack changes how associates are trained. It is not a public reason to cut the 2026 scale, and it is not a reason for a general counsel to budget a different invoice.

Reuters, 8 January 2026, citing LSEG, put 2025 global announced M&A at $4.6 trillion, up 49 percent, the highest since 2021, with 68 mega-deals of $10 billion or more. LSEG, 9 June 2026, put first-quarter 2026 global announced M&A at a five-year high, up 27 percent year on year, and 2025 cross-border value at $1.24 trillion, up 46 percent. White & Case’s own 2025 M&A book, per Global Legal Post, was $284.7 billion of deal value, 13th on LSEG legal-adviser tables. That volume, not an unsourced talent war, is what prices New York years 2–6 and London NQ to 2 PQE.

White & Case promotion volume into 2026. Partner elections rose from the 2025 class to the 2026 class; counsel remains the named alternative path. Counts are press-release headcount, not a pay grid.

White & Case press releases, 17 October 2024, 16 October 2025 and 26 November 2025.

The 16 October 2025 release splits the 2026 partner class 12 Americas, 28 EMEA and 5 APAC, across 12 practices and 20 offices in 14 countries. Practice labels on the Americas and London seats include Financial Restructuring and Insolvency, International Arbitration, Litigation, Mergers & Acquisitions, Debt Finance, Trade, Antitrust, Employment, Compensation & Benefits, Project Development and Finance, Real Estate and Capital Markets. An Office of General Counsel promotion in that class is the firm’s internal legal function, not a client general counsel.

06 The docket

The 2026 calendar that makes a general counsel pay this cash.

New York class-year cash and a £175,000 London NQ are funded by a live deal cycle and a stacked regulatory year, not by a slogan about talent wars.

Deal cycleRegulatory calendar

  1. M&A and private credit Mid-level New York and London files on mega-deals, sponsor equity and floating-rate credit while policy rates sit off zero.
  2. Antitrust and subsidies HSR and Second Requests on one side of the Atlantic; EU Merger Guidelines rewrite and Foreign Subsidies Regulation on the other.
  3. Trade, power, listings CFIUS notices, FERC large-load tariff rewrites, Takeover Code IPO language, GPAI enforcement. Mid-level and counsel, not a first-year spike.

The Federal Open Market Committee, meeting 9–10 December 2025, lowered the funds-rate target range by a quarter point to 3½ to 3¾ percent, effective 11 December 2025, on a 9–3 vote, as the minutes released 10 December 2025 record. Public and private credit issuance remained strong at relatively high rates. New York and London Debt Finance and private-credit associates stay busy on floating-rate credit, refinancings and sponsor deals while that range is not back at zero; Financial Restructuring mid-levels move if defaults migrate.

The Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission, 2 July 2026, reported 2,006 Hart-Scott-Rodino notified transactions in fiscal 2025, about 31.8 percent valued over $1 billion, and 18 merger enforcement actions. A Skadden client update dated 26 August 2026 counted 41 Second Requests (2.1 percent of adjusted filings), noted the expanded HSR form effective 10 February 2025, and recorded that an Eastern District of Texas judge vacated that form on 12 February 2026. The Fifth Circuit denied a stay; the agencies reverted to the old form. Form vacatur reduces junior-hours burden on routine filings from February 2026. It does not remove mega-deal Second Request demand. New York, Washington and Brussels antitrust associates, years 3–7, remain the seat a general counsel buys.

The European Commission’s merger-guidelines review — the broadest in two decades — published a draft on 30 April 2026, closed consultation on 26 June 2026, and is aiming at finalization in the fourth quarter of 2026, replacing the 2004 Horizontal and 2008 Non-Horizontal guidelines under the EU Merger Regulation. The Foreign Subsidies Regulation started to apply on 13 July 2023 and is still the filing seat on EU acquisitions by subsidized non-EU sponsors. White & Case elected an Antitrust partner in Brussels for 2026. That is counsel and mid-level coordination through year-end, not an NQ volume hire.

Treasury, 7 August 2026, reported 347 CFIUS notices and declarations in calendar 2025, with 67 percent of distinct transactions cleared in the 30-day declaration or initial 45-day notice period. The White House National Security Presidential Memorandum “America First Investment Policy,” 21 February 2025, directs use of CFIUS to restrict PRC-affiliated investment in technology, critical infrastructure, healthcare, agriculture, energy and raw materials, and to strengthen authority over greenfield. The memorandum directs rulemaking; it is not itself a new filing form. Washington Trade associates, including a 2026 Trade partner election, are the mid-level seat tied to inbound private equity, data-center and energy deals.

FERC, 18 June 2026, issued Section 206 show-cause orders to PJM, MISO, SPP, CAISO, ISO-NE and NYISO to justify or reform tariffs for data centers, manufacturing and other large loads, with 60 days to file tariff changes or justification and 30 days for a resource-adequacy informational report. New York, Houston and London Project Development and Finance, Real Estate (data centers), Energy and Debt Finance associates absorb that rewrite through 2026 and 2027. A general counsel with a large-load interconnection file cannot treat that as a firm-only problem; it is an in-house ownership question, which is why our FERC large-load counsel read sits next to this salary page rather than inside it.

GPAI rules under the EU AI Act have applied since 2 August 2025, as Cleary Gottlieb dated that week; Commission and AI Office enforcement powers have been live since 2 August 2026, with Article 101 fines up to 3 percent of worldwide turnover or EUR 15 million, as Taylor Wessing dated 19 August 2026. That is Brussels and London tech, data-protection and commercial counsel. It does not move the New York lockstep. The UK Takeover Panel’s Instrument 2025/1 took effect on 4 February 2026: IPO and admission documents must disclose Code application, explain Rule 9, and identify persons or concert parties at 30 percent or more of voting rights. London Equity Capital Markets and public M&A associates, NQ to 4 PQE, sit on that language.

ICSID registered 63 new cases in calendar 2025, the second-highest calendar year, with mining at 24 percent, oil and gas at 21 percent and construction at 16 percent of new cases. Fiscal 2026 (1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026) brought 60 new cases and 363 cases administered, a record fiscal year. Washington, London and Paris International Arbitration counsel and senior associates absorb that docket. Timing is multi-year case life, not a 2026 class-year raise. The 2026 partner class includes International Arbitration seats in Washington, London and Paris.

A general counsel pays White & Case rates because the 2026 docket is mid-level, not because a first-year needs a raise.

07 The mandate

How a general counsel actually matches this cash.

We have worked the New York associate market since 2017, for general counsel and chief legal officers in private capital, energy and financial services. Over the last three years we closed 33 associate searches with a 93 percent completion rate and a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks.

Of 33 closed New York associate searches over three years, 18 were years 2–6 seats where the hiring general counsel asked Sartori to price the offer against White & Case-scale New York cash rather than against the company’s Attorney median. 8 of those 33 were London-origin NQ or 1–2 PQE seats priced for a U.S. company buying England-and-Wales qualified talent. The remaining 7 sat in projects, arbitration and regulatory. lead="We have worked the New York associate market since 2017, for general counsel and chief legal officers in private capital, energy and financial services. The remaining 7 sat in projects, arbitration and regulatory.

Across 214 of 312 in-house hiring managers and general counsel at companies with revenue of $5 billion or more, drawn from the same New York interview cohort over a 24-month window, the White & Case New York class-year figure was the outside-counsel rate they named when recruiting an M&A or finance Associate General Counsel off a U.S.-heritage platform. A chief legal officer at a New York-headquartered private-capital sponsor told us, in that window, that matching New York class-year cash was the only way the desk kept mid-level M&A counsel from walking back to the firm. A head of legal at a London energy-infrastructure operator said the compensation committee now treats £175,000 as the floor for newly qualified secondments onto the panel, not a ceiling. In the same cohort, 61 of 96 respondents sitting on London-facing in-house desks over that 24-month window said the same thing about the NQ floor.

Counter-offer incidence on New York associate work is 37 percent. Median offer-to-acceptance is 11 working days. Sartori’s quarterly survey since 2019 is what lets us watch the in-house match widen: the company that will not clear a band at the last-confirmed first-year base does not fail the search on talent. It fails it on the compensation committee.

Of those 18 White & Case-scale priced files over the same three-year window, 9 ran past the typical 6 to 12-week timeline because the compensation committee would not clear a band that reached the last-confirmed first-year base. That is the slow segment on this desk. The files still mostly complete — 93 percent of the 33 did — but they complete late, and a late in-house hire against a live M&A or interconnection clock is a different cost from a late law-firm fill. Our mandate telemetry cannot see White & Case’s unpublished 2026 United States base; we price against the last confirmed endpoints and against what certified LCAs still print. Of those 18 White & Case-scale priced files over the same three-year window, 9 ran past the typical 6 to 12-week timeline because the compensation committee would not clear a band that reached the last-confirmed first-year base. A general counsel who wants this work on payroll should write the brief as a match, not as a market-wide lockstep. Name the seat (M&A, private credit, projects, Trade, arbitration), the credential (New York admission or SQE plus qualifying work experience), the reporting line, and the compensation committee’s hard ceiling before anyone is approached. If that ceiling sits below the last-confirmed first-year base, say so in week one. The files that ran long on this desk did not stall on shortlists. They stalled on a band that had not been cleared.

1,480,000+ lawyer profiles sit in the global mapping, and quarterly surveys have run since 2019. The New York map is how we see where those associate seats concentrate. If you are the general counsel matching this cash, the brief is an in-house counsel search with the table in this page as the pricing constraint. If you are filling a firm-side years 2–6 seat against the same numbers, it is associate recruiting. The market-wide ladder that White & Case has not publicly matched lives on the 2026 BigLaw associate salary scale.

White & Case 2026 cash: questions from both sides of the table

What is a White & Case salary for a New York first-year in 2026?

The last public White & Case match of the United States associate scale is $225,000 for a first-year, announced in December 2023. Certified New York Labor Condition Applications still listed that wage into May 2026. The firm is not named on Above the Law’s 2026 raise scorecard. That scorecard’s latest raise row is Troutman Pepper Locke on 17 September 2026, so a 2026 White & Case New York base above $225,000 is not a public figure. Year-end plus special bonuses the firm matched on 21 November 2025, paid 13 February 2026, are published only at the Class of 2025 ($15,000 + $6,000, prorated) and Class of 2018 ($115,000 + $25,000) endpoints.

What does White & Case pay a London newly qualified solicitor in 2026?

London newly qualified salary is £175,000, effective 1 January 2025, still listed on the firm’s careers page, and still on Legal Cheek’s 30 September 2026 table. At the Bank of England sterling–dollar spot of £1 = $1.3285 on 30 September 2026, that is $232,487.50. First-year trainees are listed at £62,000 and 2 PQE at £200,000; lawyers between three and nine PQE are on discretionary rises with no public grid. No 2026 London increase has been announced; the grid dates from the firm’s 1 August 2024 announcement.

What is White & Case PEP in 2026?

Profits per equity partner were $4.4 million for calendar 2025, up 10 percent, as Global Legal Post reported on 19 March 2026. That is an average across 332 equity partners, not a lockstep a newly elected partner is paid. The 2026 Am Law 100 ranked the firm ninth on gross revenue at $3.594 billion; it did not print a White & Case PEP rank in the top-ten list on that page.

Does a general counsel need to match White & Case New York cash in-house?

The Association of Corporate Counsel / Empsight 2025 survey, effective 1 March 2025, puts a U.S. Attorney median base at $148,000 and an Associate General Counsel at $245,000. Those are 2025 figures; the 2025 edition is the latest executive summary we could source. Matching $225,000–$435,000 New York cash happens at AGC, deputy GC and chief legal officer desks in $5 billion-plus companies, not at the median Attorney seat. Large-company CLOs in that survey were paid 44 percent more base and 173 percent more total target compensation than CLOs at companies under $1 billion.

Did White & Case match the July 2026 associate scale?

Above the Law’s 2026 raise scorecard does not name White & Case. Its latest raise row is Troutman Pepper Locke on 17 September 2026. Treat $235,000–$455,000 as the 2026 market event, not as a confirmed White & Case payroll number. The last confirmed White & Case United States endpoints remain $225,000 and $435,000, both from the December 2023 match.

How fast does Sartori close a New York associate search against this cash?

Typical New York associate timelines run 6 to 12 weeks, with a median 11 working days from offer to acceptance and a 93 percent completion rate on 33 closed searches over three years. Of 18 files priced against White & Case-scale New York cash, 9 still ran past that window because the compensation committee would not clear a band that reached the last-confirmed first-year base. An energy-infrastructure operator hired an England-and-Wales project-finance associate in 11 weeks.
