Winston & Strawn Salary 2026: Scale, Bonus and Partner Pay

The credential that still gates a 2026 Winston scale seat is a dated class-year USD table with the year inside every cell. The employer's own HTML does not print one. This page sets out the last named public cell, the capital that pays the seat, and what a general counsel is buying when that gate is missing.

The 2026 cell is the gate. It is not on the page.

Sartori maps 13,000 lawyers in Chicago. The 12,215 corporate in-house lawyers on the Illinois ARDC 2024 count are the desks that still have to match a Winston & Strawn salary when the 2026 class-year USD table is missing.

Lens 01 · The missing table The employer’s HTML does not print a 2026 class-year USD table.

The Associate Salary Disclosures page carries a 2026 copyright and says total compensation includes a discretionary performance bonus. Direct access returned HTTP 422; the successor-brand URL returned 404. A gate with no printed cell.

Four public facts a general counsel can print today: no 2026 class-year USD table on the employer HTML, a 2024 named bonus match, a 1 June 2026 combination, and a closed 2027 summer class. Every number is cited below.

Legal Business, 14 April 2026

These four cells are the fiscal 2025 capital, reported by Legal Business on 14 April 2026 in the last standalone Winston & Strawn read before the combination. They fund the lockstep. They are not the lockstep.

02 The last public cell

The last public Winston & Strawn salary cell is 2024.

A general counsel who asks for the 2026 grid is asking for a document the employer has not put in crawlable HTML. The document that does exist is a year older, and it is a bonus match, not a base table.

On the associate line we have worked this market for eight years. The question a chief legal officer actually asks is narrower than the query: what does this named firm pay a class-year associate in 2026, and what do I match if I hire one onto my payroll.

Above the Law, on 11 December 2024, reported that Winston & Strawn matched Milbank’s 2024 year-end and special bonuses. The special-bonus schedule, as printed, paid 100 percent if hours targets were met or exceeded, 75 percent at 75 percent or more of hours targets, 50 percent between 50 and 74 percent, and nothing under 50 percent. Additional bonuses sat on top for associates who “substantially” exceeded productivity. Payout was at the end of January 2025. The class-year dollar grid sat in an image and did not extract as HTML numbers.

Above the Law’s own gloss on that memo: “we believe that’s 2000 hours” for the minimum threshold. That 2,000-hour figure is the publication’s belief, not a number printed from the memo in the extracted text.

Winston's 2024 special-bonus haircut, as printed by Above the Law on 11 December 2024. The schedule is hours-based; the class-year dollar grid behind it did not extract as HTML.

Above the Law, 11 December 2024.

The firm’s fiscal year, reported by Above the Law on 8 March 2022, begins on 1 February. U.S. associate bases have historically been retroactive to that date and reflected in paychecks on 15 March. On 5 December 2023 the same publication reported Winston announcing associate raises effective 1 February 2024, “a month later than most of Winston’s peer firms,” plus extra eligibility for super-high billers. A general counsel who budgets a 1 January market raise against this platform is budgeting against a calendar the firm has not used.

The 2026 market raise is a different fact. Milbank announced associate base increases of $10,000 to $20,000 by class year on 2 June 2026, effective 1 July 2026. Bloomberg Law, on 17 June 2026, printed the endpoints: $235,000 for first-year associates and $455,000 for eighth-year associates. Winston & Strawn and Winston Taylor do not appear in Above the Law’s 2026 summer raise scorecard as extracted through 31 August 2026. That is a non-listing. It is not a denial that a private memo exists. A guessed 2026 Winston grid is not a public cell, and the market-wide ladder is not this firm’s own. That ladder lives on the BigLaw associate salary scale 2026 page.

The public cell is 2024. The gate is still class year.

03 The capital that pays the seat

Fiscal 2025 cleared $4 million PEP. That is not a paycheck.

The pool that funds a Winston lockstep associate and a Winston equity draw is public. The individual paycheck is not. A general counsel matching the seat needs both facts, in that order.

Three fiscal 2025 averages from the last standalone Winston & Strawn Am Law read, published by Legal Business on 14 April 2026. Click a marker. PEP is a ratio, not a partner's draw.

Legal Business, 14 April 2026 ↗

Legal Business, on 14 April 2026, put the last standalone Winston & Strawn year at $1.37 billion gross revenue, up 8 percent; profits per equity partner $4.05 million, up 15 percent and the first crossing of $4 million; net income $436.5 million, up 6.4 percent; average partner compensation $2.04 million; revenue per lawyer $1.48 million, up 8.3 percent. The firm’s own same-day note called it a record year in revenue and in equity-partner profits, and named Chart Industries’ $13.6 billion sale to Baker Hughes as a transaction example.

The prior-year baseline, from the 2025 Global 200 ranked by revenue as compiled on Wikipedia from Law.com International, put fiscal 2024 at $1,270,475,000 revenue, 932 lawyers, $1,363,000 revenue per lawyer and $3,521,000 profit per partner. Those four cells are a different vintage from the 14 April 2026 read and are not mixed with it.

On 1 June 2026 the platform went live as Winston Taylor. The firm announcement that day: more than 1,400 lawyers across the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East; 20 offices. About-blocks on the same page put legacy Winston at an Am Law 50 firm with 1,000 lawyers across 14 offices, and Taylor Wessing UK at a top-20 UK firm with over 450 lawyers in the UK, Ireland and the Middle East. Netherlands and Belgium use the brand under a separate partnership agreement and a separate profit pool. The homepage, accessed 11 September 2026, prints 1,400+ lawyers and $1.75 billion revenue. Reuters, on 30 January 2026, reported the partner vote and the same combined-revenue figure as an estimate from the new firm’s website. Legal Business, on 1 June 2026, reported the combined firm expecting to break through the $2 billion revenue mark “very quickly” — an aspiration, not a closed year.

U.S. lockstep cashLondon combination cash

  1. U.S. class-year lockstep The associate is paid by graduation year. The last named public bonus match is 2024. The 2026 dollar grid is not on the employer HTML.
  2. One letterhead, two NQ cash figures The combination put a Chicago lockstep and a London NQ market on the same brand. A promised comprehensive review of pay structures was not given a date.
  3. London private-equity associate A different credential: UK qualified or equivalent, from a recognized private-equity or transactional practice. The 2026 role specification printed salary as Competitive, not as a class-year cell.

RollOnFriday, on 5 June 2026, reported the pre-combination London split: Taylor Wessing’s NQ salary was £115,000; the couple of NQs in Winston & Strawn’s London office earned £160,000. A firm spokesperson said the new firm would conduct a comprehensive review of pay structures for a market-competitive structure that rewards performance and supports retention at every stage. Comment-thread color on the same page is anecdote and is not used here.

Chambers USA 2026 profiles Winston Taylor LLP at 1,400 lawyers, 20 offices, 63 ranked departments and 92 ranked individuals. Illinois, the headquarters market at 300 N. LaSalle, is ranked Band 1 in Antitrust, Employee Benefits & Executive Compensation, and Litigation: General Commercial, and Band 2 in Corporate/M&A & Private Equity, Environment, Intellectual Property, and Litigation: White-Collar Crime & Government Investigations. Ranked departments are not headcount. They are the desks a general counsel is actually buying.

04 Who earns it, who pays it

The associate earns a lockstep. The general counsel matches a person.

Two readers share this page: the lawyer who earns a Winston figure and the company that has to match it. The in house counsel salary Chicago figure that would make the match easy is not a published wage.

In the same Chicago interview cohort, 58 of 84 in-house hiring managers — general counsel, chief legal officers, vice presidents of legal and heads of legal at companies, not at firms — over a 24-month window told Sartori they priced a Winston-trained associate against the last named bonus memo, not against a 2026 class-year cell. Of 94 associates and counsel in that cohort who currently sit or recently sat on an Am Law 50 lockstep, 41 said they could not print their own 2026 cell from the employer site. The remaining 72 interviews sat with firm-side hiring partners and practice chairs; they are context for the lockstep, not the company buyer.

A general counsel at a Chicago-headquartered industrial public company put the diligence gap in one line: I can match 2024. I cannot diligence 2026 from their site. A head of talent at a private-equity-backed healthcare platform described waiting on the 1 February fiscal-year habit rather than a 1 January market match, and refusing to post an in-house band labeled “Winston scale 2026” without a primary document.

Firm seatCompany payroll

  1. U.S. associate lockstep Class year plus a U.S. bar. Summer-associate hiring is already closed for 2027. Experienced laterals are sold on impact, not tenure — a different gate.
  2. London PE associate UK qualification or equivalent, mid-market buy-out and M&A, typically three days a week in the office. No class-year USD or GBP table in the 2026 specification.
  3. In-house at a qualifying company Full local license, or Illinois Rule 716 house counsel, or California Registered In-House Counsel. The lockstep cell does not travel. The training does.

The Illinois Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission’s 2024 Annual Report, transmitted 22 April 2025 for the registration year ended 31 August 2024, counted 12,215 lawyers in Corporate In-House, 16.1 percent of currently practicing Active, up from 11,231 (15.4 percent) in 2020. Private practice held 49,579 (65.5 percent). Government and judge held 9,255 (12.2 percent). Rule 716 in-house counsel registrations stood at 525. Cook County held 46,907 of in-state lawyers; the six-county metropolitan Chicago area held 57,194. The ARDC does not publish Winston headcount.

Illinois Rule 716 is the gate a Chicago general counsel uses when hiring a New York- or California-barred Winston alumnus who is not sitting the Illinois bar. The Illinois Board of Admissions to the Bar requires exclusive employment as house counsel for a single entity whose lawful business consists of activities other than the practice of law; a $1,500 application filing fee; employer certification that the employer is not a law firm; and application within 90 days of start to avoid unauthorized practice. The license dies if employment ends, with a 120-day bridge to a new qualifying employer. It is a limited license. It is not a substitute for the firm’s class-year table.

California Registered In-House Counsel, for alumni of the Los Angeles, San Francisco and Silicon Valley offices, requires licensure and good standing in another U.S. jurisdiction, residence in California, and work for a qualifying institution that employs at least five full-time employees. Governmental entities and law firms cannot be qualifying institutions. The annual renewal window is 1 February to 1 April, or the registration is suspended. The State Bar of California page was accessed 11 September 2026.

Illinois currently practicing Active lawyers by setting, Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission 2024 Annual Report (registration year ended 31 August 2024). The in-house stock is the buyer pool that prices a Winston-trained associate onto a company payroll.

ARDC 2024 Annual Report, transmitted 22 April 2025.

The 2026 Association of Corporate Counsel Chief Legal Officers Survey, 1,049 participants across 20 industries and 43 countries, found 63 percent of chief legal officers expect headcount to remain stable and 48 percent increased use of outside counsel as a regulatory pressure valve. Budget and resource constraints were the top barrier for 35 percent; operational efficiency was the top strategic initiative for 53 percent. Eighty-four percent of CLOs report directly to the CEO. That is why a general counsel still pays a Winston-scale invoice while not adding a parallel in-house class.

CLOC, on 2 March 2026 in Chicago, released its 2026 State of the Industry Report based on the 2025 Harbor Law Department Survey of 135 law departments. Only 32 percent expect attorney headcount increases. Only 37 percent expect outside-counsel spend to increase, down from 58 percent the prior year. Regulatory-compliance workload was up for 63 percent of those departments; cybersecurity for 58 percent. More matters steered out, on a tighter rate and volume leash, is the tension with the ACC finding, not a contradiction of it.

05 The work that funds the scale

The 2026 desks a company is actually buying.

Partner intake in 2026 concentrated in private capital, leveraged finance, digital assets, investigations and antitrust. Associate demand follows those desks. A general counsel matching the scale is matching that work, not a generalist class.

Dated 2026 partner-level additions on the firm site, read as practice and city rather than as names, cluster in five desks. Finance and leveraged finance in Chicago, 2 February 2026, PE-sponsor acquisition financings. White Collar and Government Investigations in Washington, D.C. and New York, 7 April 2026. Investigations and White Collar Defense in Chicago, 25 August 2026, a former Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois and a former SEC Division of Enforcement lawyer. Antitrust and Competition in Chicago, 1 September 2026, a former Assistant Chief of the DOJ Antitrust Division Chicago Office. Financial Innovation and Regulation plus Digital Assets in New York, 9 September 2026. Private Capital and Funds in New York, 10 September 2026. The firm did not publish associate-class hiring counts. Associate demand is implied by that partner build-out, not measured by it.

The Department of Justice, on 26 August 2026, announced a proposed settlement requiring KKR & Co. GP LLC to pay $250,000,000 for alleged serial Hart-Scott-Rodino violations. The complaint alleged at least 16 HSR violations in 2021 and 2022; the penalty was described as more than 20 times any prior HSR penalty obtained by the DOJ. The firm’s own 1 September 2026 note put the 2026 HSR size-of-transaction threshold at $133.9 million or more. That is immediate 2026 work for mid-level antitrust associates on document production and Item 4, and for the private-equity transactional associates whose sponsors file at volume. It is not a junior checklist.

Baker Hughes and Chart Industries, on 29 July 2025, announced Baker Hughes would acquire Chart at $210 per share in cash, equivalent to a $13.6 billion enterprise value, with Winston & Strawn as legal adviser to Chart. Expected close was by mid-year 2026. The buyer of that advice is a public-company general counsel desk in energy and industrial technology. The earner of scale on the file is a firm M&A associate.

U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken, on 6 June 2025, gave final approval to the House antitrust settlement: the NCAA and the Power Five conferences to pay $2.78 billion in back damages over 10 years; schools may share up to 22 percent of average athletic revenue, projected at approximately $20 million per school in year one. The 1 September 2026 audit added $44.03 million for 2026–27 across 335 schools that opted in, $131,438 per school, taking the per-school figure to $21,583,913. University general counsel and athletic-compliance desks now administer a revenue-share pool. The earner of Winston scale on the file is a litigation associate at class counsel, not an in-house university lawyer.

Sports Business Journal, on 11 December 2025, reported a mid-trial settlement of the NASCAR charter antitrust case: $365 million in claimed combined damages, confidential financial terms, evergreen charters. Claimed damages are not a recovery and not a fee. Team and sanctioning-body general counsel desks spent 2026 implementing the charter amendments. The earner of scale was firm litigation.

The GENIUS Act, Public Law 119-27, became law on 18 July 2025. Payment-stablecoin licensing, AML and market-entry advice now runs through 2027 for issuers, banks and state-qualified trusts — the Financial Innovation and Regulation desk filled in New York on 9 September 2026. Seniority on that work is mid-level financial regulation, not first-year lockstep.

A 2026 Winston Taylor Private Equity, London — Associate specification printed seven PE-focused partners in London, mid-market typically £80 million to £500 million, three days a week in the office, and salary “Competitive.” Candidates must be UK qualified or equivalent, coming from a recognized private-equity or transactional legal practice. That is the UK half of the combination a general counsel is matching when the U.S. class-year table is missing, and it is a different credential.

Three seats a general counsel confuses at the offer stage. The credential that gates each one is different, and only the U.S. firm seat was ever a class-year USD table.
Seat Credential that gates 2026 USD table Who pays
U.S. associate, Chicago / New York / D.C. / California Class year plus a U.S. bar; 2027 2L summer already closed Not on employer HTML The firm; a company matches it on hire-out

Illinois in-house counsel Full license, or Rule 716 at $1,500 and a 90-day safe harbor Not a lockstep cell The company payroll

You are matching a person, not a 2026 HTML table. Price the 2024 named memo, the lockstep culture, and the desk you are actually buying.

  • Write two numbers. One is the in-house band you will pay. The other is the last named public Winston cell you are matching against. Confusing them produces a requisition nobody can sign.
  • Name the desk. Private capital, leveraged finance, investigations, antitrust and digital-assets regulation are the 2026 intake. A generalist “Winston associate” brief is a different search.
  • Decide the license on day one. Full Illinois admission, Rule 716 at $1,500, or a California Registered In-House Counsel filing if the seat sits on the West Coast. The lockstep cell does not travel.
  • Budget the counter-offer. Chicago associate telemetry records a 35 percent incidence and 11 working days from offer to signature. Am Law 50 lockstep employers defend cash.
  • Do not wait for a 2026 grid. California SB 642 should have put a good-faith range on California postings from 1 January 2026. The employer HTML still does not yield the cells. Waiting for them is not a search plan. See our make-versus-buy guide if the alternative is another year of Winston-scale invoices on a flat headcount.

You cannot print your 2026 cell from the employer site either. A company offer will be priced against 2024, and against the desk you have actually worked.

  • Carry the last named memo. 11 December 2024, Milbank-matched year-end and special, hours haircut, January 2025 payout. That is the public document.
  • Do not quote the market ladder as yours. $235,000 to $455,000 is the July 2026 market, printed by Bloomberg Law on 17 June 2026. Winston is not on the extracted Above the Law scorecard through 31 August 2026.
  • If the move is to London. The credential is UK qualification or equivalent, not a Cravath cell. Pre-combination NQ cash sat at £115,000 and £160,000 on two letterheads, per RollOnFriday on 5 June 2026.
  • If the move is in-house in Chicago. Rule 716 is a 90-day clock and a $1,500 filing, not a courtesy. The license dies when the job does.
  • Explore on a no-names basis. Our in-house transition playbook covers how to test a company seat without putting a current lockstep at risk.
07 The search

We have closed 26 Chicago associate searches. We cannot print the 2026 cell either.

The gap is not a miss rate. It is a document we do not have. Company-side files that wait for it run long.

Of 26 closed Chicago associate searches over three years, 14 were company-side seats — general counsel and chief legal officer desks hiring Am Law 50-trained associates onto a corporate payroll — and 12 were firm-side associate laterals. Nine of those 26 files drew a counter-offer, which is the 35 percent incidence the Chicago associate line carries. Median offer-to-acceptance on the same telemetry is 11 working days. Typical time-to-fill is 6 to 12 weeks. Completion is 93 percent.

Five of the 14 company-side files ran past the 12-week end of that band because the hiring general counsel would not sign a compensation band without a 2026 class-year table the employer’s HTML still does not print. Those five still closed. That is the finding that does not flatter the method: we can close the search, and we cannot manufacture a 2026 Winston grid the employer has not published.

Quarterly surveys have run since 2019. Nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles are mapped globally. The Chicago associate desk is eight years old. The service view of the firm-side book sits on associate and attorney recruiting; the company-side book on in-house counsel recruiting and, where the seat is the top of the department, hiring your first general counsel. A chief legal officer who is replacing a Winston-scale invoice with a hire, rather than adding a seat, should start there and come back to this page for the number.

Common questions about the 2026 figure

What is Winston & Strawn salary in 2026?

Winston & Strawn has not published a 2026 class-year USD table on its Associate Salary Disclosures HTML. The last firm-named U.S. associate-pay memo recovered is the 11 December 2024 bonus match. A general counsel matching the seat in 2026 is matching that 2024 memo and a lockstep culture, not a printed 2026 cell. Fiscal 2025 profits per equity partner, reported by Legal Business on 14 April 2026, were $4.05 million; that is the capital, not the associate grid.

Did Winston match the July 2026 $235,000 market scale?

Winston & Strawn and Winston Taylor do not appear on Above the Law’s 2026 summer raise scorecard as extracted through 31 August 2026. That is a non-listing, not a confirmed private denial. Bloomberg Law on 17 June 2026 printed the market endpoints at $235,000 for a first-year and $455,000 for an eighth-year, effective 1 July 2026 after Milbank’s 2 June 2026 move — a market fact, not Winston’s own grid. The market-wide ladder lives on our BigLaw associate salary scale 2026 page.

What were Winston & Strawn associate bonuses in 2024?

On 11 December 2024 Above the Law reported that Winston & Strawn matched Milbank’s 2024 year-end and special bonuses. Special-bonus haircuts ran 100 percent if hours targets were met, 75 percent at 75 percent of hours, 50 percent between 50 and 74 percent, and none under 50 percent, with extra cash for associates who substantially exceeded productivity, payable at the end of January 2025. Above the Law’s own gloss put the minimum threshold at 2,000 hours; that figure is the publication’s belief, not a number printed from the memo in the extracted text.

How much do Winston & Strawn partners make?

Legal Business on 14 April 2026 put fiscal 2025 profits per equity partner at $4.05 million. Average partner compensation was $2.04 million; net income was $436.5 million. Those are firm averages, not a partner’s draw. For how PEP conceals spread, guarantees and non-equity tiers, see partner pay at the Am Law top 50.

What does a Chicago general counsel match when hiring a Winston-trained associate?

A Chicago general counsel matching Winston scale in 2026 is matching a lockstep-trained associate whose last named public bonus is 2024. The in-house gate is a full license or an Illinois Rule 716 limited house-counsel registration at a $1,500 filing fee with a 90-day safe harbor, not a class-year cell. Sartori’s Chicago associate telemetry, 26 closed searches over three years, records a 35 percent counter-offer rate and 11 working days from offer to signature.

How long does it take to hire a Winston-scale associate in Chicago?

Sartori’s Chicago associate desk works to a typical 6 to 12 week timeline across 26 closed searches over three years. Company-side seats that wait for a 2026 printed cell we cannot source from the employer’s HTML run past that band. Completion on the same desk sits at 93 percent.

Fiscal 2025 capital is the 14 April 2026 Legal Business read of the last standalone Winston & Strawn year. Combined-firm lawyer and revenue figures are firm-announced as of 1 June 2026 and the homepage accessed 11 September 2026. London NQ cash is journalist-reported (RollOnFriday, 5 June 2026), not an audited memo. The 2,000-hour bonus threshold is Above the Law's belief, not a number printed from the 2024 memo. Absence from the 2026 summer raise scorecard through 31 August 2026 is a non-listing, not a confirmed non-match. Capabilities-page marketing counts (700+ litigators, $900B+ deal value) are self-reported and are not used as pay cells. NALP city tables and BLS Chicago lawyer medians were not recovered as open pages and are omitted.

Our own numbers — the Chicago interview cohort, the mandate telemetry, the counter-offer incidence and the offer-to-acceptance window — come from the continuous research program described on our research page, which sets out the cohorts, the survey waves and the mapping coverage behind every Sartori figure quoted above.

A quiet conversation

Matching a Winston-scale associate onto a company payroll?

We map Chicago associate and in-house talent against the last named public cell, not against a 2026 grid the employer has not printed. Confidential, no obligation.
