Apply in confidence →Experienced costs lawyer opportunity in a national complex paying‑party costs team, based in Birmingham. The role involves managing high‑value, complex costs disputes (regularly six‑figure and occasionally seven‑figure claims) on behalf of paying parties, including drafting points of dispute, advising on likely assessed outcomes and, where authorised, conducting proceedings.
You will join a multi‑disciplinary costs product that handles complex matters across a range of underlying dispute types (catastrophic PI, commercial, aviation, cyber, multi‑party and clinical risk). The role reports to the Legal Director of the complex paying‑party team and includes responsibility for file quality, financial management and meeting team service standards.
This is a hands‑on position with opportunities to support team operations, participate in business development and contribute to technical and training initiatives within the costs practice.
- Qualified Costs Lawyer preferred; experienced non‑qualified candidates with substantial paying‑party costs experience will be considered.
- Ideally circa 10 years' post‑qualification experience handling paying‑party costs disputes, including drafting points of dispute and challenging complex bills.
- Proven ability to manage a caseload of high‑value matters and to exercise strong file financial management.
- Comfortable acting as a client contact, meeting SLA and quality standards, and contributing to business development and team training.
- Advocacy experience and technical leadership are advantageous but not essential.
