A growing charities and not-for-profit practice is seeking a senior associate or legal director to join its team. The group is particularly known for advising charities and other not-for-profits across the health and social care and education sectors, and is widely recognised as a leading strategic, commercial and regulatory advisor in the health and social care space both in the UK and internationally. The client base is broad, reflecting the diverse nature of the sector, and includes household names.

The role can be based in any of several UK offices. You will handle your own caseload and support the lead partner on larger projects, covering the full range of charity law and governance issues, while contributing to business development and supervising junior team members.

Work spans advising trustees on duties and responsibilities; charity start-ups and registrations; choice of legal structure (charitable companies, CIOs, royal charter and statutory corporations, unincorporated associations, charitable trusts, community interest companies and other social enterprises); constitutional reviews and regulated amendments requiring regulatory consent; governance issues including conflicts of interest, disputes, governance reviews and policy drafting; strategic and commercial matters including domestic and international growth and relationships with non-charitable entities; mergers, acquisitions and disposals; grant agreements and fundraising; endowments and restricted funds; serious incident reporting and drafting reports to the regulator; and support to other specialists on charity-related issues in critical incidents, property disposals, banking, insolvency and employment. You will also assist with business development and tender preparation.

Excellent relationship and client-handling skills, able to deal confidently and professionally with clients on day-to-day issues.
Reasonable level of self-sufficiency combined with awareness of the boundaries of own competence and authority.
Strong technical skills and an ability to understand and work through complex issues.
Team-oriented and collegiate, with experience of and willingness to mentor, coach and supervise less experienced team members.
Exposure to and success within business development activities.
Confident communicator able to develop relationships and undertake client marketing.
In-house charity experience will be considered.
Flexible on location.
