Apply in confidence →Are you looking for a role where you will be intellectually challenged, yet treated with respect? Do you want an environment that values high-quality work while maintaining strong client contact and business development? We have an opening in our Regulatory, Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) team that might be the perfect fit for you.
Our national regulatory practice advises individuals and organizations facing criminal investigations and enforcement actions related to health and safety, fire safety, food safety, and environmental law. We also provide guidance on product safety and represent clients in inquests and public inquiries. With a team of over 30 specialist lawyers across multiple locations, we are expanding to meet growing client demand.
We are seeking candidates with experience handling regulatory issues, including investigations and prosecutions brought by enforcement agencies such as the Police, HSE, Local Authorities, Fire Authorities, the Environment Agency, and other regulators. Ideal experience includes involvement in inquests, preparing submissions to regulators, interviewing witnesses, and providing non-contentious compliance advice.
Our busy practice handles a steady flow of high-profile cases and investigations. You will work with a diverse client base spanning major industries and their insurers, supported by colleagues across different practice groups whose skills complement ours. Our team members are encouraged to develop their own client relationships from the outset, with opportunities to see the direct impact of your work.
We are part of an international firm with over 2,500 professionals in 9 countries, and we are looking to strengthen our SHE team nationally, with a focus on the Midlands or Wales region.
In this role, you will:
- Manage a busy and varied caseload covering a range of contentious and non-contentious regulatory matters.
- Act as a primary point of contact for clients, working in accordance with client protocols and demonstrating skill commensurate with experience.
- Support business development activities, including preparing and delivering pitches, presentations, and training events.
- Ensure sound file management, including compliance with firm and client protocols, accurate billing, credit control, and timely closure of matters.
- Take responsibility for quality control and benchmarking on your own caseload, ensuring accuracy and timeliness in management reporting.
- Maintain an understanding of other practice areas and contribute to an active internal network.
- Stay current with technical knowledge through training, reading, and exceeding CPD requirements.
About you:
- At least 5 years of post-qualification experience (PQE) gained in a regulatory and/or commercial environment, whether in private practice or in-house.
- Experience advising on regulatory matters, including HSE/Police investigations, witness interviews, interviews under caution, prosecutions, sentencing, and inquests.
- Familiarity with areas such as vehicle operator licensing, environmental breaches, trading standards, product safety, food safety, and fire safety would be advantageous, though we will consider candidates with other relevant experience.
- Experience in business development and building long-term client relationships.
- Willingness to travel at short notice to assist clients on-site as situations arise, and a valid driving licence is required.
- Solicitor or equivalent qualification with at least 5 years PQE.
- Demonstrated experience in regulatory law, including investigations, enforcement actions, and compliance advice.
- Strong client management and business development skills.
- Ability to handle a high-volume caseload with attention to detail.
- Willingness to travel at short notice and hold a valid driving licence.
