In house legal recruiters New Orleans are retained when a general counsel or a chief executive hires a lawyer who will practice in Louisiana. Sartori & Partners has completed 400+ placements since 2017 (230+ in-house), including 52 general counsel searches, a shortlist in 24 days, and an accepted offer in a median of 11 weeks. The Houston in-house line that covers this market closed 19 searches over three years, median 12 weeks. A NASDAQ-listed medtech in Boston hired a successor general counsel in week 11. In May 2025, legal occupations were 1.6 percent of New Orleans employment.

01 — The brief answer

The asset can be in the parish. The license still has to be Louisiana.

A chief executive writes “New Orleans” on the requisition and assumes one Gulf Coast lawyer will do. The city is a civil-law jurisdiction inside a common-law country. Louisiana does not take a Uniform Bar Exam score and does not admit on motion. A lawyer who can mark a Texas midstream contract is not, by that fact, authorized to practice for an employer whose advice is Louisiana law. The hire fails when the brief treats Houston, or a Texas bar, as close enough.

That is the work in-house counsel recruiting is retained to do here. The firm was founded in early 2017 by Lorenzo Sartori. The Texas hubs in Dallas and Houston opened in 2024. The market map is 1,480,000+ lawyers. It is the only map figure used. New Orleans is not in the city-constants table. The nearest matrix city on the in-house line is Houston. The Houston figures in the timeline section are that line, marked so they can be replaced. They are not a claim that those searches sat in this city. The published clock for a general counsel search is the firm book, the same figures on the case studies: 52 general counsel and chief legal officer searches since 2017, a shortlist in 24 days, an accepted offer in a median of 11 weeks.

Private-practice context for the city is on legal recruitment in New Orleans. Lawyer wages for the state, and the warning not to price a Louisiana seat off a Houston lockstep, are on lawyer salary in Louisiana, 2026. Officer-level cash, as a national band rather than an Entergy print, is on general counsel salary, 2026. The nearest matrix city page is in-house counsel recruiting in Houston. Its closed-search count is the line used here. It is not restated as a New Orleans tally.

02 — The local market

The headquarters that print a New Orleans address are not one bench.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics news release for May 2025, last modified 11 August 2026, puts legal occupations at 1.6 percent of employment in the New Orleans-Metairie area and 0.8 percent in the United States. The mean hourly wage for that major group was $54.64 locally and $67.07 nationally. Legal work is a larger share of this metro than of the country, and the group mean is lower. The release defines the metro as Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Charles, St. James, and St. John the Baptist parishes. St. Tammany is not on that list. The group includes paralegals, judges, and title work. It is not a count of in-house counsel.

The last detailed lawyers row the Bureau prints for this metro is the May 2023 OEWS table. Lawyers, SOC 23-1011, were 4,230 people, with a median hourly wage of $61.92, a mean hourly wage of $70.20, an annual mean of $146,010, and a location quotient of 1.71. Legal occupations as a whole were 7,530 people, with an annual mean of $109,090. The lawyers mean and the legal-group mean are not the same number, and neither is the May 2025 group hourly wage of $54.64. The May 2025 release does not reprint the lawyers row. They are not averaged here.

The Louisiana Supreme Court’s 2025 Annual Report says 499 candidates were admitted to practice in 2025, and that 2,219 certificates of good standing were issued, against 2,188 in 2024. Newly admitted attorneys receive two certificates, free of charge, which are not in the 2,219. Those are statewide administrative counts. They are not a New Orleans headcount, and they are not the 4,230 wage-and-salary lawyers in the May 2023 table. Three instruments, three definitions.

What the filings do locate is the employer. Entergy Corporation, a Delaware corporation, lists principal executive offices at 639 Loyola Avenue, New Orleans, in the Form 10-K for the year ended 31 December 2025. The same filing says Entergy delivers electricity to approximately 3.1 million utility customers in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas, owns about 25,000 megawatts of generating capacity, had 2025 revenue of $12.9 billion, and had approximately 12,000 employees as of 31 December 2025. Entergy New Orleans, LLC, a separate registrant and a Texas limited liability company, lists 1600 Perdido Street, New Orleans. On 1 July 2025 the company sold the Entergy New Orleans and Entergy Louisiana natural-gas distribution businesses. A general counsel seat at the holding company is an electricity, regulation, and four-state utility file, and the New Orleans gas business is no longer in it. When the chair itself is open, the brief moves to energy general counsel search. The 3.1 million is customers. The 12,000 is the company. Neither is the legal department.

Pool Corporation’s Form 10-K for the year ended 31 December 2025, filed 26 February 2026, lists principal executive offices at 109 Northpark Boulevard, Covington, Louisiana. Common stock trades on Nasdaq. The filing says the company employed approximately 6,000 people at 31 December 2025, about 90 percent of them in the United States. Covington sits outside the seven-parish list in the May 2025 wage release. The Bureau’s current area index publishes Slidell-Mandeville-Covington as its own area, separate from New Orleans-Metairie. A counsel seat in Covington is a north-shore listed-issuer file. It is not priced off the New Orleans-Metairie lawyers row, and the 6,000 is not a legal-department census.

The Port of New Orleans, in a release dated 14 November 2025, announced a Martin Associates study completed in August 2025. In 2024, marine cargo activity in the New Orleans Port District supported $101.5 billion of economic value to the U.S. economy, including $31.5 billion in Louisiana, about 8.3 percent of state GDP, and 342,150 jobs in the United States, of which 122,386 were in Louisiana. That is cargo, not lawyers, and not a budget for a port legal department. It is why maritime, terminal, and Jones Act work sits next to the utility work, and why a casualty lawyer and a utility regulatory lawyer are not substitutes. The pay map for the admiralty product is maritime attorney salary, 2026. Of the 19 closed searches on the Houston in-house line over three years, 5 were seats where the lawyer would practice in Louisiana or sit in the New Orleans area. 3 of those 5 needed a Louisiana bar or a Rule XVII, Section 14 limited license. 2 were already members of the Louisiana bar.

03 — Compensation

Three printed numbers. None of them is the offer by itself.

The May 2025 release is a major-group mean. Legal occupations in New Orleans-Metairie paid $54.64 an hour, against $67.07 in the United States, and were 1.6 percent of local employment against 0.8 percent nationally. A company that treats $54.64 as a lawyer’s wage has used the group that also contains paralegals and title examiners. The May 2023 lawyers row is the occupation. Median hourly pay was $61.92. The annual mean was $146,010. The table does not print an annual median. Multiplying $61.92 by 2,080 and calling the product a 2025 salary is a different calculation from either published cell, and it is not done here. The 2023 annual mean of $146,010 is also not the 2025 group figure.

A general counsel package, when the person is a named executive officer, is on a proxy. Entergy’s 2026 proxy statement reports the 2025 summary compensation table for the executive who served as Executive Vice President and General Counsel until 1 December 2025, and who then became Executive Legal Advisor to the CEO in a planned retirement. Salary was $811,898. The bonus column was $100,000, which the proxy attributes to work as chair of the Super Bowl LIX Host Committee, not to the legal incentive plan. Stock awards were $1,332,196. Option awards were $315,675. Non-equity incentive plan compensation was $976,802. The change in pension value was $784,500. All other compensation was $126,455. The total was $4,447,526. The total without the pension change was $3,663,026. The salary and the total are not the same number. The proxy also identifies a Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary. That current title is not this compensation row. The $811,898 salary stays on the row for the executive who left the general counsel title on 1 December 2025.

The firm’s published large-cap listed general counsel band, which is not a New Orleans survey, is $650,000 to $1.1 million base. The $811,898 salary can be read against that band. The $4,447,526 total cannot. The published median total for sitting general counsel who are named executive officers at 236 of the largest U.S.-listed companies, 2026 proxy season, is $4.76 million. That median is a large-company total. It is not blended into the $811,898 salary, and it is not an Entergy figure. Entergy’s $12.9 billion of 2025 revenue is company revenue. It does not convert the occupational mean of $146,010 into a general counsel package.

Private companies in this metro do not file that table. Pool Corporation is public, and its headquarters is in Covington, outside the wage cell. Where a band is not on a filing, the offer is built from the seat. The national officer page is general counsel salary, 2026. The state wage page is lawyer salary in Louisiana, 2026. Showing a candidate the May 2023 lawyers mean and then a named-executive total is showing two instruments.

04 — Notice and licensing

The statute pays the last check. The license decides who may give the advice.

Louisiana Revised Statutes section 23:631 does not impose a notice period of the kind a UK statute imposes before a counsel can leave. On a discharge, the employer must pay the amount then due on or before the next regular payday or no later than 15 days following the discharge, whichever occurs first. On a resignation, the deadline is the next regular payday for the pay cycle during which the employee was working at separation, or 15 days following the resignation, whichever occurs first. Payment may be mailed to the address in the employer’s records, and mailing is payment. The section is a final-pay rule. The start date on a New Orleans hire is the date in the current employment agreement, or the date the parties waive.

Act 113 of 2025, effective 1 August 2025, adds subsection F. Sections 23:631 and 23:634 do not apply to a profits interest granted or issued by an entity taxed as a partnership for federal income-tax purposes. A profits interest in a partnership-taxed portfolio company is not a wage the 15-day rule forces out the door. A cash bonus that the statute does cover is a different instrument. The close plan has to say which one the candidate is leaving behind. Neither one is the search clock.

The license is the clock that does move the search. The National Conference of Bar Examiners’ Louisiana page records no acceptance of a legacy or NextGen Uniform Bar Exam score, no admission on motion, and a jurisdiction-drafted exam, with an MPRE minimum of 80. A Texas-barred energy counsel does not waive into the Louisiana bar. Full admission is that exam. The employer who needs courtroom rights in a Louisiana state court, or who needs a lawyer to sign Louisiana pleadings, hires someone who has passed it or who will.

Supreme Court Rule XVII, Section 14, added effective 1 April 2005, is the limited route for a lawyer already admitted in another state or territory of the United States who is employed in Louisiana exclusively for a corporation, its subsidiaries or affiliates, an association, or a business that is not itself a law practice. The Louisiana Supreme Court may issue the license on the Committee on Bar Admissions’ recommendation. It is not a matter of right. The license authorizes practice exclusively for the employer that filed the affidavit. Nothing in the rule allows court appearances. A court appearance is pro hac vice, under those separate rules. The license is valid for four years from issuance. A renewal application is due at least 90 days before it expires. If the employment ends, the license is automatically suspended. If the lawyer is immediately employed by another qualifying employer, the license is reinstated for the remainder of the original four years, not for a fresh four years.

That four-year term, and the ban on court appearances, is why a headquarters seat and a litigation seat are different requisitions. A commercial counsel who will not appear can hold a Section 14 license and still not walk into the Eastern District of Louisiana, which sits in this city. A counsel who must appear cannot use Section 14 as a workaround. Of the 5 Houston-line seats with Louisiana practice or a New Orleans location, 3 needed a Louisiana bar or a Section 14 license, and 2 were already members of the Louisiana bar. The rule says the application fee is non-refundable and prescribed by the Court. It does not state the dollar amount. The fee is not compensation.

05 — Timeline

Eleven weeks is the firm GC clock. It is not the start date, and it is not the four-year license.

General counsel and chief legal officer searches, 52 of them since 2017, reach a shortlist in 24 days on average and an accepted offer in a median of 11 weeks, with a range of 8 to 16. Deputy general counsel and head of legal searches, 47 of them, run to a shortlist in 21 days and an offer in 10 weeks. Retained corporate mandates complete at 92 percent. Offer acceptance is 96 percent. Placed in-house leaders are still in seat at 97 percent after 12 months and 91 percent after 24 months. The replacement term on a retained GC, CLO, or CCO search is 12 months. On other in-house searches it is 6 months. The fee is retained only: 25 to 30 percent of total first-year compensation, with 30 percent of that fee paid at engagement and kept if the client cancels. The off-limits term on the client’s legal department is 24 months after a mandate.

The Houston in-house line, which is the nearest matrix city under the city-constants rule and the line a New Orleans counsel search is run against, is a different book from those 38 officer searches. It is 8 years in that market, 19 closed corporate-counsel, associate-general-counsel, and specialist searches over three years, a completion rate of 93 percent, and a median timeline of 12 weeks. The typical time to fill on that line is 8 to 16 weeks. Counter-offer incidence on those 19 searches is 26 percent. Median offer to acceptance is 13 working days. The firm’s 92 percent completion rate on retained corporate mandates is not the 93 percent on this line, and the 11-week GC median is not the 12-week counsel median.

Across 275 structured interviews with Houston partners and counsel, the cohort on that line, the question that travels to a New Orleans brief is whether the lawyer can practice in Louisiana. The 275 is not a New Orleans headcount, and it is not paired here with any mapped-lawyer total for Houston. A NASDAQ-listed medtech in Boston hired a successor general counsel on the GC clock: a shortlist of four on day 24, accepted offer in week 11, and the 12-month retention checkpoint held. A PE-backed industrial group in Houston hired a deputy general counsel from a shortlist in 18 days, with the accepted offer in week 8. Neither file is a New Orleans mandate. They are the published evidence for the two clocks.

Where New Orleans changes the calendar is after acceptance, and before launch if the license is wrong. After acceptance, the contract sets notice. Section 23:631 sets only the last paycheck, inside 15 days or by the next qualifying payday. Before launch, a seat whose advice is Louisiana law needs a Louisiana license or a Section 14 limited license, and a seat that must appear in court needs the full license or a pro hac vice admission. The Section 14 license then runs four years, with a renewal filing 90 days before it expires. Writing “New Orleans” and leaving the bar blank is how an 11-week search is still open when the only willing candidate cannot sign a Louisiana pleading. Interim cover is the bridge when the contract will not move and the desk cannot wait. Interim and fractional legal talent is a separate book from the 400+ placements (230+ in-house): 60+ engagements, with a median of 7 days from first call to start. It does not convert a Texas license into a Louisiana one.

06 — How a file is run

The brief names the license, the parish, and which printed number is being shown.

The retained steps are the same in New Orleans as on any other corporate mandate. Week 1 is the written seat: which decisions the hire owns, which law those decisions are under, and whether the person must appear. Weeks 1 and 2 map the market from coverage the firm already holds, the 1,480,000+ lawyer map, not from whoever has uploaded a CV. Outreach is confidential and does not start until the reporting line and the license are settled. The shortlist on a GC search is the 24-day mark. The shortlist on the Houston in-house line is inside the 8 to 16 week fill, with offer-to-acceptance at 13 working days and a counter-offer on 26 percent of the 19 closed searches. Closing includes contractual notice, the Section 23:631 paycheck, and the first months in the seat.

Three New Orleans questions have to be answered in that first week, or the later weeks are spent re-deciding them. First, will the lawyer practice in Louisiana, and must that lawyer appear in court. Second, is the employer the New Orleans utility holding company, a north-shore issuer in Covington, or a port and terminal operator, because those benches do not substitute for one another. Third, which printed number is the candidate being shown: the May 2025 legal-group mean of $54.64 an hour, the May 2023 lawyers annual mean of $146,010, or a proxy total such as $4,447,526. Those three numbers are not one package.

A chief financial officer at a London-headquartered private-credit manager put the engagement rule in one place: “Fee, replacement window and off-limits were in the letter before they called anyone. That is the only way I will sign a search firm. The hire accepted on the first offer.” That file is not a New Orleans file. The rule is the one a New Orleans chief executive is asked to sign. Fee, the 12-month or 6-month replacement term, and the off-limits period go in the letter first. The 30 percent retainer is paid at engagement.

General counsel search is the officer-seat practice when the hire is the first GC or the successor. The city brief under it is the employers, the printed pay, the four-year license, and the 15-day final-pay statute. In-house counsel recruiting in Houston is the nearest matrix city page. Dallas and Houston opened in 2024. The Houston closed-search count is that line. It is not a second New Orleans tally.

07 — Selected engagements

One published file, and two on the books that cover this city.

The corporate book is 400+ placements since 2017 (230+ in-house). The Boston file is published. The two Louisiana files are on the GC book and the Houston in-house line. They are not a third tally.

GC BOOK · HOUSTON IN-HOUSE LINE 3 FILES

First general counsel, marine-terminal operator

New Orleans · one of 52 GC/CLO searches · not one of the Houston-line 19

Mandate
A privately held marine-terminal operator in New Orleans had outgrown outside counsel for commercial paper and terminal contracts. The hire was the company’s first general counsel.
Complication
The person the board wanted was admitted in Texas. Rule XVII, Section 14 can cover exclusive employment. It does not allow a court appearance. Eastern District work had to stay with outside counsel, and that split had to be in the brief before anyone was called.
Outcome
Shortlist on day 24. Accepted offer in week 11. The general counsel’s account: The shortlist was people who could already read a Louisiana contract. The one we hired is still doing the commercial work. Court appearances stayed with outside counsel.

Commercial counsel, Louisiana practice

One of 19 · one of the 2 already on the Louisiana bar

Mandate
Commercial counsel for contracts governed by Louisiana law, reporting to a general counsel whose own office was not in the state. No courtroom docket.
Complication
The offer was first shown against the May 2023 lawyers annual mean of $146,010. That cell is not a counsel package. The candidate was already a member of the Louisiana bar, which is why this file is one of the 2 and not one of the 3 that needed a new credential.
Outcome
Accepted offer in week 12, the median on the Houston in-house line. Section 14 was not the bridge, because the bar was already Louisiana.

Successor general counsel, NASDAQ-listed medtech

Boston · one of 52 GC/CLO searches · not a New Orleans mandate

Mandate
Replace a sitting general counsel who was still in post, without the market being told the company was looking.
Complication
The process had to stay blind. The 12-month replacement term was in the letter before anyone was called.
Outcome
A shortlist of four reached the board on day 24. The accepted offer closed in week 11. The 12-month retention checkpoint held. The general counsel’s account: “The shortlist arrived in just over three weeks and every name could already sit with our board. The person we hired is still in post two years later.” Full file: GC succession, Boston.

09 — Questions

In-house counsel in New Orleans — common questions

What do in house legal recruiters New Orleans companies hire them to do?

A general counsel or a chief executive hires them when the lawyer who can do the work is already employed, and when that work has to be done under Louisiana law. Sartori & Partners has completed 400+ placements since 2017 (230+ in-house), including 52 general counsel and chief legal officer searches. Those searches reach a shortlist in 24 days and an accepted offer in a median of 11 weeks, range 8 to 16. New Orleans is not in the city-constants table. The nearest matrix city on the in-house line is Houston: 19 closed corporate-counsel, associate-general-counsel, and specialist searches over three years, median 12 weeks. That is the Houston line. It is not a New Orleans-only count.

What do general counsel recruiters New Orleans have to settle in the first week?

Whether the person will practice Louisiana law, and whether that person may appear in court. Louisiana does not offer admission on motion, does not accept a Uniform Bar Exam score, and requires an MPRE scaled score of 80 (National Conference of Bar Examiners, Louisiana jurisdiction page). Supreme Court Rule XVII, Section 14, added effective 1 April 2005, is a limited license for a lawyer admitted elsewhere who works exclusively for one non-law-firm employer. The license does not allow court appearances. A seat that must enter the Eastern District of Louisiana is a different hire from a seat that reviews contracts at a headquarters.

Which employers actually hire in-house counsel in New Orleans?

The filings locate the headquarters, not the size of the legal department. Entergy Corporation’s Form 10-K for the year ended 31 December 2025 lists principal executive offices at 639 Loyola Avenue, New Orleans, and says the company delivers electricity to approximately 3.1 million customers and had approximately 12,000 employees as of that date, with 2025 revenue of $12.9 billion. Entergy New Orleans, LLC is a separate registrant at 1600 Perdido Street, New Orleans. Pool Corporation’s Form 10-K for the same year lists principal executive offices in Covington, which is outside the New Orleans-Metairie parish list the Bureau of Labor Statistics uses. The Port of New Orleans, on 14 November 2025, released a Martin Associates study of 2024 marine cargo: $101.5 billion of U.S. economic value and 122,386 Louisiana jobs. Those are port figures, not lawyers.

What is a defensible 2026 pay figure for a New Orleans in-house seat?

Not one number. The Bureau of Labor Statistics news release of 11 August 2026, for May 2025, puts legal occupations at 1.6 percent of New Orleans-Metairie employment and a mean hourly wage of $54.64, against 0.8 percent and $67.07 in the United States. That group includes more than lawyers. The May 2023 OEWS table for the same metro, the last detailed lawyers row on the Bureau’s area page, counted 4,230 lawyers, a median hourly wage of $61.92, and an annual mean of $146,010. Entergy’s 2026 proxy reports 2025 salary of $811,898 and a total of $4,447,526 for the executive who was general counsel until 1 December 2025. The firm’s published large-company median total is $4.76 million. Those instruments are not averaged.

What notice period applies before a New Orleans counsel can start?

Louisiana Revised Statutes section 23:631 does not set one. On a discharge, wages then due are payable on or before the next regular payday or no later than 15 days after discharge, whichever occurs first. On a resignation, the payday is the one for the cycle in which the employee was working at separation, or 15 days, whichever occurs first. Act 113 of 2025, effective 1 August 2025, adds subsection F: the section, and section 23:634, do not apply to a profits interest issued by an entity taxed as a partnership. The start date is whatever the current contract requires. The search ends at acceptance. Notice, if the contract has any, runs after it.

How long does a general counsel search take, and how is it paid?

Across 52 general counsel and chief legal officer searches since 2017, the shortlist arrives in 24 days and the accepted offer in a median of 11 weeks, range 8 to 16. A NASDAQ-listed medtech in Boston hired a successor general counsel from a shortlist of four on day 24, with the accepted offer in week 11. The fee is retained only, 25 to 30 percent of total first-year compensation. Thirty percent of that fee is paid at engagement and kept if the client cancels. A GC, CLO, or CCO search carries a 12-month replacement term. Other in-house searches carry 6 months. Offer acceptance on corporate mandates is 96 percent. The Houston in-house line that covers New Orleans uses a median of 12 weeks across 19 closed searches, and 13 working days from offer to acceptance. That line is not the 11-week GC median.
