In-house legal recruiters in Paris

Retained search for a directeur juridique or a general counsel. The offer is a French CDI. The collaboration floor on the Paris bar is a different product.

Companies that brief in house legal recruiters Paris are hiring a directeur juridique who must clear a French CDI, the barreau and préavis in one offer. Since 2017 Sartori & Partners has completed 400+ placements (230+ in-house), including 52 general counsel searches. Over the three years to 2026 that Paris book closed 19 searches at 93% completion. On the 2017–2026 GC book a shortlist takes 24 days and an accepted offer a median of 11 weeks. A NASDAQ medtech in Boston hired its successor general counsel in week 11, from four names on day 24.

01 — The brief answer

Paris hires a juriste. The bar number beside the offer is a different contract.

A chief executive in Paris writes one line: French and English, comfortable with the AMF, ready to start. The line collapses two professions. Across 250 structured interviews with Paris partners and counsel, the constraint that decides an in-house move is the instrument. A collaborateur libéral invoices hors taxes and stays on the tableau. A directeur juridique signs a CDI, leaves the tableau if he or she was an avocat, and from 2027 may mark a consultation confidential without becoming an avocat.

That is the hiring problem in-house counsel recruiting is retained to solve in this city. Sartori & Partners was founded in 2017 by Lorenzo Sartori. We have worked the Paris in-house market for 8 years, for listed issuers, La Défense banks and insurers, luxury and consumer groups, energy and infrastructure companies, and sponsor-backed ETIs. Over the three years to 2026 we closed 19 in-house searches at a 93 percent completion rate, on an 8 to 16 week window. Those 19 sit inside the firm book below. They are not a second book.

02 — The local market

The buyers sit in La Défense, the 8th, and the regulators’ arrondissements.

The countable bar is not the in-house bench, and the two published counts of the bar should not be averaged. The CNB directory extract published by Village de la Justice for 1 January 2026 lists 34,665 avocats on the Paris bar, up 2,348 from 32,317 on 1 January 2023, inside a national directory of 79,141. The Ordre des avocats de Paris, on its institution page updated 12 August 2026, describes the same bar as nearly 35,000 avocats. CNB chiffres-clés 2026 count a different stock: 4,132 élèves-avocats, of whom 2,105 are at the Paris EFB. Trainees are not directeurs juridiques.

The in-house profession publishes itself through the AFJE. On the missions page updated 24 September 2026, the association says it federates 20,000 juristes d’entreprise and calls that group the second legal profession in France, after the avocats. Private-practice context for the city sits on legal recruitment in Paris. The company-side question is which employer is actually buying a seat.

Six sectors carry the mandates. Banking and insurance concentrate at La Défense and in the 8th and 9th: BNP Paribas, Société Générale, Crédit Agricole, BPCE, AXA, Amundi. Luxury and consumer groups run legal from Paris: LVMH, Kering, Hermès, L’Oréal, Pernod Ricard, Danone. Energy and infrastructure: TotalEnergies, Engie, Veolia, Air Liquide, Vinci, Saint-Gobain, Schneider Electric. Health: Sanofi. Market infrastructure and the supervisors sit in the city: Euronext, the AMF, the ACPR, the CNIL, the Autorité de la concurrence. Sponsor-backed companies are the sixth buyer. France Invest and Grant Thornton, on 25 March 2026, recorded EUR 36.4 billion invested by French private equity in 2025, down 1 percent, EUR 42.9 billion raised, up 10 percent, and EUR 14.0 billion of exits at historical cost, up 9 percent, across 2,904 companies and infrastructure projects. Industry, digital, consumer and health were the sectors that took the capital. A Paris head of legal at a portco is hired against that calendar, not against a law-firm lockstep.

Of the 19 closed Paris in-house searches, 6 were directeur juridique or general counsel, 8 were senior juriste seats, and 5 were head-of-legal seats. The 6 officer-level files sit inside the 52 GC and CLO searches in the firm book. They do not add to it.

03 — Compensation

Three public numbers. None of them is the offer.

A 2026 “lawyer salary” pasted into a Paris offer is usually the collaboration floor. The Ordre des avocats de Paris, updated 21 January 2026, set the full-time rétrocession minimum under RIBP article P 14.3.1 at EUR 3,700 hors taxes a month in the first year and EUR 4,100 from the second. The monthly social-security ceiling (PASS) rose 2 percent on 1 January 2026 to EUR 4,005, and the new minima apply to collaboration contracts already in force. That is what a patron pays a collaborateur. It is not a CDI, and VAT sits on top of it. CNB chiffres-clés 2026 put mean net income for avocats at EUR 88,536, a profession-wide profit figure, not a directeur juridique wage. APEC’s barometer, published 18 November 2025 from a June 2025 survey, put median French cadre pay (fixed plus variable) at EUR 55,000, up 1.8 percent on June 2024. APEC’s December 2025 study of 111 cadre families puts 80 percent of legal-occupation cadres between EUR 40,000 and EUR 80,000, and the median variable at EUR 4,000. Forty-one percent of that family have any variable portion, against 50 percent of cadres. The France table is lawyer salary in France, 2026. Seniority bands that are not a Paris cell are on in-house counsel salary, 2026.

What the buyer googles 2026 public anchor What the company is actually buying

CNB mean net EUR 88,536, chiffres-clés 2026, whole profession A profit figure after charges. Not an offer.
APEC legal cadres 80 percent between EUR 40,000 and EUR 80,000, December 2025 A national cadre band. Not a directeur juridique at a listed group.

The fee is 25–30 percent of total first-year compensation. Thirty percent of that fee is paid when the search is engaged and kept if the client cancels. A GC, CLO or CCO search carries a 12-month replacement term. Other in-house searches carry 6 months. Off-limits on the client’s legal department run 24 months, and a lawyer we have placed is not approached while they stay.

Hiring in Paris?

Name the contract before you name the person.

CDI juriste, omission from the tableau, or an interim bridge across a three-month préavis. The letter records the fee before any approach.

04 — Notice and the bar

Acceptance is not a start date. The préavis and the tableau run after it.

French dismissal notice is a floor, and it is not the resignation clock a hiring company actually waits on. Article L1234-1 of the Code du travail, in force since 1 May 2008, gives a dismissed employee one month of préavis from six months’ service and two months from two years, unless a statute, a convention, the contract or a local usage is more favorable to the employee. A clause that cuts below that floor is void. The article is about dismissal. A counsel who resigns to join you is on the convention collective of the employer he or she is leaving.

For a large slice of Paris tech, consulting and digital employers, that convention is Syntec, IDCC 1486. PayFit’s reading of the convention, published 16 April 2026, puts the préavis for ingénieurs et cadres at three months on resignation, at any seniority. A bank, an insurer or a metallurgy group is on a different text. The search reads the candidate’s convention before the offer, because a week-11 acceptance plus a three-month préavis is a start in month six or seven. Where the seat cannot wait, the bridge is interim legal talent: a separate book of 60+ engagements since 2017, median 7 days from first call to start, outside the 230+.

A non-compete can add a third clock, and only if it is valid. Service-Public (F1910) states the cumulative conditions: limited in time, limited in space, limited to a specific activity, and a financial counterpart paid after the contract ends, not during it. Miss one condition and the clause is not valid.

Licensing is the other half of the same offer. Article 7 of the law of 31 December 1971 lets an avocat practice alone, inside a law-firm entity, or as the salarié or collaborateur libéral of an avocat or of such an entity. The Cour de cassation, social chamber, 12 May 2017 (pourvois 15-28.943 and 15-29.129), restated the consequence: an avocat is not employed by a trading company. The in-house chair is the juriste d’entreprise under article 58 of the same law, which the AFJE quotes: legal advice for the employer, under a contrat de travail. An avocat who accepts the chair requests omission from the Paris bar. The door the other way is the passerelle. JSS, on 6 February 2026, reported a Cour de cassation decision of 28 January 2026: eight years in a company legal department can support admission without the CAPA, subordination is not a reason to refuse, and the candidate need not have run the department. That decision moves a juriste toward the bar. It does not let the company keep an avocat on its payroll.

Law no. 2026-122 of 23 February 2026, on Légifrance, adds a narrow confidentiality to some of those juriste consultations. The author needs a master in law or an equivalent, French or foreign, and must have followed an ethics course whose référentiel is still a joint arrêté of the justice and economy ministers. The memo must be a personalized legal opinion, addressed to management, marked “confidentiel – consultation juridique – juriste d’entreprise,” and filed separately. In civil, commercial and administrative proceedings it is shielded from seizure, subject to a contest procedure. Article 58-1 reserves the inspection powers of European Union authorities. Article 4 defers entry into force to a decree, and at the latest to the first day of the twelfth month after promulgation. The AFJE, on 17 June 2026, reads that long-stop as 1 February 2027. A 2026 search can require the credential. It cannot yet treat the privilege as if the arrêté had been published.

05 — Timeline

Two clocks: signature, then préavis.

General counsel and chief legal officer searches in the firm book reach a shortlist in 24 days on average and an accepted offer in a median of 11 weeks, range 8 to 16, across 52 GC and CLO searches since 2017. A NASDAQ-listed medtech in Boston hired its successor general counsel on that clock: four names on day 24, accepted offer in week 11. Paris in-house files, which include senior juriste seats as well as the directeur juridique chair, are run inside an 8 to 16 week brief-to-signature window. Median time from offer to acceptance on the 19 is 15 working days. Counter-offers landed on 29 percent of them, usually a title or a retention payment from the law firm or the bank the candidate was leaving.

Firm-wide, 92 percent of retained corporate mandates complete, and 96 percent of offers are accepted. The Paris completion rate, 93 percent, is the city line, not a restatement of either firm rate. Retention of placed in-house leaders is 97 percent at 12 months and 91 percent at 24 months. Those checkpoints are the firm book. They are not a promise about a company that has not been named.

The date a Paris board remembers is the start date, and the start date is acceptance plus préavis. An 11-week GC search that then meets a three-month Syntec préavis is occupied for roughly half a year before the new counsel is in the building. Scheduling the interim, the outside-counsel cover, and the waiver of any non-compete is part of the offer, not a courtesy after signature. The officer-level search itself is briefed on general counsel search.

06 — How a search runs

Six steps. The Paris work is in the blueprint.

  1. 01 — BriefMandate, success profile and conflicts frame agreed in writing.
  2. 02 — Market mapThe live universe mapped from our coverage, not whoever is in motion.
  3. 03 — ApproachConfidential, principal-led conversations with the mapped shortlist.
  4. 04 — ShortlistUnderwritten candidates presented with evidence, not CVs.
  5. 05 — OfferPackage design, references and counter-offer defence.
  6. 06 — CloseResignation, notice and the first hundred days, managed.

The blueprint names the employing entity, the convention collective that will govern the CDI, whether the seat must read an AMF filing or only instruct the lawyer who signs it, and whether the candidate has to come off the Paris bar. The fee letter goes out with that page. Outreach does not start until both are signed.

Mapping uses the research program. Coverage of lawyers in Paris is 9,000. The market map, which is a different figure and not a Paris count, is 1,480,000+ lawyers. The same cohort of interviews already cited is the only interview count for the city. Quarterly surveys have run since 2019. A longlist is cut to people who have held the file the seat actually has: an AMF visa, an ACPR control, a CNIL investigation, a works-council consultation, or a sponsor exit. A CV that says “French law” is not that file.

The general counsel shortlist is built to the 24-day firm average. Dossiers name the matters, the reporting line, and the préavis the current contract will impose. References are taken before the offer. The 20 to 30 percent target goes in the letter, because a counter-offer lands on 29 percent of accepted candidates on this book.

PARIS IN-HOUSE · PLUS ONE PUBLISHED FILE 3 ENGAGEMENTS · ANONYMIZED

Successor general counsel, NASDAQ-listed medtech

Boston · one of 52 GC/CLO searches · blind process

Mandate
Replace a sitting general counsel who was still in the building, without a public process.
Complication
The successor had to speak the product regulator and the audit committee. The sitting general counsel was not shopped.
Outcome
A shortlist of four reached the board on day 24. The accepted offer closed in week 11. The general counsel’s own line, published with the file: “The shortlist arrived in just over three weeks and every name could already sit with our board. The person we hired is still in post two years later.” Full file: GC succession, Boston.

Directeur juridique, Euronext-listed industrial

Paris / La Défense · one of 6 officer-level files inside the 19

Mandate
Succeed a directeur juridique covering AMF disclosure, a French works council and two cross-border supply contracts. Reporting line: the chief executive.
Complication
The candidate was an avocat. Acceptance required omission from the Paris bar. The employment contract being left stated a 3-month préavis. A non-compete counterpart was still being paid by the previous employer and had to be waived in writing.
Outcome
Shortlist on day 22. Accepted offer in week 14, 18 working days after the offer. Base EUR 210,000 gross, contractual bonus 25 percent. Start date set after the préavis, not on signature.

Head of legal, sponsor-backed consumer ETI

Paris 8th · one of 5 head-of-legal files inside the 19

Mandate
First head of legal for a consumer group backed by a Paris sponsor, after the deal closed. Commercial contracts, employment and the sponsor’s reporting pack, in one seat.
Complication
The opening band had been copied from a hors-taxes collaborator rumor. Two finalists read it as a firm seat and stepped back. The incumbent employer then made a counter-offer, which is the pattern behind the 29 percent rate on this book.
Outcome
The band was rewritten to a CDI before the final meeting. Shortlist on day 19. Accepted offer in week 11, 12 working days after the offer. Base EUR 175,000 gross, contractual bonus 20 percent. The counter-offer lost to a written scope, not to a higher base.

09 — Questions

In-house counsel in Paris — common questions

What do in house legal recruiters Paris companies hire them to do?

They are hired to fill a directeur juridique or a general counsel the company does not already know, on a French CDI. A posting reaches people who are looking. A retained search approaches counsel who are in post. Sartori & Partners has completed 400+ placements since 2017 (230+ in-house), including 52 general counsel and chief legal officer searches. The Paris in-house book is 19 closed searches over the three years to 2026.

Which Paris employers actually hire in-house counsel?

Listed groups, banks, insurers and sponsor-backed companies with a legal seat in Paris or La Défense. France Invest and Grant Thornton, on 25 March 2026, recorded EUR 36.4 billion invested in 2025. The AFJE, updated 24 September 2026, says it federates 20,000 juristes d’entreprise. That is the profession, not a count of open seats.

What is a defensible 2026 pay source for a Paris in-house offer?

Not the Paris Bar collaboration floor. From 1 January 2026 that floor is EUR 3,700 a month hors taxes in year one and EUR 4,100 from year two, for a full-time collaborateur libéral (Ordre des avocats de Paris, 21 January 2026). APEC’s December 2025 legal-occupations family puts 80 percent of those cadres between EUR 40,000 and EUR 80,000 a year. On the Paris in-house book, accepted directeur juridique bases sat at EUR 160,000 to EUR 240,000 gross. The instruments are different, and the offer has to say which one it is.

How long is notice, and can the hire stay on the Paris bar?

Dismissal notice under Code du travail article L1234-1 is one month from six months’ service and two months from two years, unless the convention or the contract is longer. Resignation notice follows the convention: under Syntec (IDCC 1486) a cadre’s préavis is three months at any seniority (PayFit, 16 April 2026). Article 7 of the law of 31 December 1971 lets an avocat be employed only by an avocat or a law-firm entity. The in-house chair is a juriste on a CDI, not a collaboration.

How long does a Paris general counsel search take, and how is it paid?

Across 52 general counsel and chief legal officer searches since 2017, the shortlist arrives in 24 days and the accepted offer in a median of 11 weeks, range 8 to 16. Paris in-house files, counsel seats included, run 8 to 16 weeks to signature, then the candidate’s préavis. Median offer-to-acceptance on that Paris book is 15 working days. The fee is 25–30 percent of total first-year compensation. Thirty percent of the fee is paid at engagement. A GC, CLO or CCO search carries a 12-month replacement term.

Does the February 2026 confidentiality law make a Paris juriste an avocat?

No. Law no. 2026-122 of 23 February 2026 protects certain consultations in civil, commercial and administrative proceedings. It enters into force by decree and at the latest on 1 February 2027 (AFJE, 17 June 2026). The author must hold a master in law, follow an ethics course set by a joint arrêté, and mark the memo. It does not inscribe anyone on the Paris bar, and it reserves the inspection powers of European Union authorities.
