Lawyer salary in France, 2026: the posted cell is not the product.
Paris Ordre full-time rétrocession minima from 1 January 2026 are EUR 3,700 HT a month in year one and EUR 4,100 from year two. That is a floor, not a market wage, and it is not what a company is buying when it posts a Paris in-house cell.

Paris Ordre full-time rétrocession minima from 1 January 2026 are EUR 3,700 HT a month in year one and EUR 4,100 from year two. Sartori maps roughly 9,000 lawyers in Paris. The cell a general counsel posts is not, on that evidence, the product the company is hiring.
The Barreau de Paris, updated 21 January 2026, indexed full-time rétrocession minima under RIBP article P 14.3.1 to the PASS: EUR 3,700 HT in year one and EUR 4,100 from year two, about USD 51,468 / 57,033 a year at the ECB fix of 11 September 2026. Amounts apply automatically to contracts in force. A floor the patron must pay.
Every cell above is a dated public instrument. USD uses the ECB reference of 11 September 2026. The full 2026 table sits in the next section.

EUR and USD, by instrument — not by a guessed firm-tier first-year. A hors-taxes rétrocession, a CDI gross and a net-income statistic are not one wage, and they are not added on this page.
A general counsel who googles a 2026 France number usually lands on a single cell and treats it as the product. It is not. The Barreau de Paris, updated 21 January 2026 and restated 17 April 2026, set full-time rétrocession minima under RIBP article P 14.3.1 at EUR 3,700 HT a month in the first year of collaboration and EUR 4,100 from the second, about USD 51,468 / 57,033 a year at the European Central Bank euro reference of 11 September 2026 (USD 1.1592 per euro). URSSAF, updated 1 January 2026, put the 2026 monthly PASS at EUR 4,005 and the annual ceiling at EUR 48,060; the Ordre states the 2026 minima follow that 2 percent lift. That is a floor the patron must pay, indexed automatically, VAT extra. It is not what a fee-dense Paris business desk pays, and it is not a salaried offer.
The Union des Jeunes Avocats de Paris, on 23 January 2026, published the Ordre-recommended tariff at EUR 4,440 HT in year one and EUR 4,870 in year two — EUR 53,280 / 58,440 a year, about USD 61,762 / 67,744. The gap versus the ordinal floor, EUR 740 / 770 a month, is the first 2026 split between a posted cell and a living-cost product inside private practice itself. It is still a floor. The CNB Observatoire’s Collaboration 2026 survey, report dated February 2026, fieldwork September–October 2025, then measures what Paris collaborateurs actually invoice.

Annualised rétrocession cells assume twelve months full-time. VAT and the collaborateur’s own social charges sit outside the HT cell. CDI figures are gross. CNB net income is a profession-wide statistic, not a Paris business-desk wage. Figures: Paris Bar, UJA, CNB, Avenant 29, APEC, ECB.
The CNB histogram is a measured self-report, not a census and not a lockstep. Combined EUR 8,000 HT and above is 28 percent of Paris collaborateurs; combined EUR 10,000 and above is 14 percent. Nine in ten collaborateurs in that survey report no unpaid rétrocession; 41 percent report some difficulty executing the collaboration contract. The Anglo-American first-year cell that looks like EUR 10,000 HT a month is a thin slice of the Paris bar, not the product a company is buying when it posts a juriste seat.
Avenant n° 29 of 24 January 2025 to IDCC 1850, the salaried-avocat grid, is the other private-practice instrument. Paris and Île-de-France year-one gross is EUR 31,494.44; the five-year or specialist-mention step is EUR 52,131. Rest-of-France year one is EUR 29,134.56. Juristique restated the same grid on 26 March 2026. CNB 2026 key figures still put salariés at 2.7 percent of the profession. Until apprenticeship lands as an optional alternative, programmed for January 2027 and still pending RNCP/CFA steps, the first-year product a Paris business firm buys is a liberal collaborateur, not a salaried avocat on those minima.
Modal band floor
EUR 5,000 HT a month, annualised. The lower edge of the cell 39 percent of Paris collaborateurs report.
CNB Enquête Collaboration 2026 ↗A hors-taxes rétrocession is not a CDI gross. They are not one salary.
The avocat and the juriste are still two professions.
The European e-Justice portal still treats them as distinct. A company that posts a collaborateur cell against a general counsel job is shopping in the wrong one.
The European e-Justice portal’s France page on initial training of lawyers states that CRFPA training is not designed for people who want to become juristes d’entreprise, then: in France the avocat cannot be avocat en entreprise, and the avocat and the juriste d’entreprise exercise two distinct professions. Many future in-house lawyers still sit the CRFPA because the CAPA is treated as a hiring advantage, not because it converts the seat into an avocat seat. That is the anatomy of a Paris in-house posting that stays open: the cell looks like a lawyer wage; the company is not buying an avocat.
CNB access rules in force in 2026 reserve the profession, in principle since 1 January 2025, to a Master 2 in law or a listed equivalent. CRFPA entry still needs only the first 60 ECTS of a master. Eighteen months at a CRFPA, then the CAPA, then oath and inscription. CNB states that 98 percent of those admitted to the CAPA obtain it, about 80 percent of CAPA holders are on a French bar within six months, and 93 percent of those exercise as collaborateurs libéraux. The Paris EFB is the factory for the Paris collaborateur cell: CNB 2026 key figures put 2,105 of 4,132 élèves-avocats at the Paris school. Paris bar inscription after CAPA carries an EUR 800 fee and a Conseil de l’Ordre decision within two months. The first-year product a Paris business firm buys on that pipeline is still collaboration libérale.
Master 2 for CAPA, under law n° 2023-1059 and décret n° 2024-1049, first hits the 2027 CAPA session. The 2026 Paris first-year collaborateur intake is still the pre-2025 CRFPA cohort. Décret n° 2023-1125 of 1 December 2023 put an avocat référent on every year-one and year-two collaborateur from 1 January 2025. The seat is still not a salaried IDCC 1850 product. Apprenticeship as an optional alternative remains programmed for January 2027. None of that converts a company CDI into a bar title.
Bar title, liberal seatCompany payroll, no bar title
- Collaborateur libéral CAPA, oath, barreau, rétrocession HT, VAT extra, personal clientele permitted. This is the seat almost every new registrant takes, and it is the cell the 2026 Ordre and UJA floors price.
- Salaried avocat A CDI inside a firm, on IDCC 1850 minima. A real legal-employment product, and a thin one. It is not the default first-year seat at a Paris business desk.
- Juriste d’entreprise A salaried in-house product. The 2026 statute buys a privileged memo, not a tableau inscription. Criminal, tax and Commission files still go to an avocat.
Loi n° 2026-122 of 23 February 2026, after Conseil constitutionnel decision n° 2026-900 DC of 18 February 2026, inserts article 58-1 into the law of 31 December 1971. Club des Juristes, on 2–3 March 2026, put the point in one line: the reform does not institute professional secrecy in the classic sense. A client note from a French independent, dated 28 April 2026, restates the cumulative conditions: a law diploma (or, on that reading, a maîtrise plus eight years in a legal department); ethics training whose référentiel is still to be set by joint arrêté of Justice and Economy, employer-paid; addressees limited to direction, board, group and subsidiaries; a personalized legal opinion, not a commercial memo; the legend “confidentiel – consultation juridique – juriste d’entreprise,” author identity, separate filing. Not opposable in criminal or tax. Reserved as against EU authorities on Commission inspections. In force at the latest the first day of the twelfth month after promulgation — 1 February 2027.
That is why a posted Paris general counsel cell stays open when the company prices it as if it were a Magic Circle rétrocession. The company is hiring a juriste who can, after the ethics arrêté, produce a privileged memo — and still has to hire an avocat when the file is a dawn raid, a tax audit, or a criminal investigation. AMF and ACPR still see compliance-function reports that are not legal opinions. The 2026 law did not create avocat-en-entreprise. A head of legal who writes the requisition as if it did will wait on a shortlist that never quite fits.
Fee-dense Paris desks fund the tail. The national bar does not.
Décideurs' 9 September 2025 ranking put 2024 France-office turnover of the top 150 at EUR 5.9 billion. Revenue per lawyer is a fee-intensity measure of the desk, not associate pay.
The desks that can fund a 5,000–8,000 or 8,000–12,000 HT/month collaborateur are a short list of fee-dense Paris offices, not the national bar. Village de la Justice, updating data.gouv snapshots on 3 March 2026, counted 79,141 avocats in January 2026 against 74,882 in January 2023, of which more than half the national gain sat at the Paris bar. Ministry of Justice statistics at 1 January 2023 put the bar at 73,998 with Paris at 31,834 (43 percent). The live CNB directory on avocat.fr showed 78,938. Band the 2026 stock at 78,000–80,000 nationally and 34,000–36,000 at Paris; do not pick a single cell. Most of that stock does not invoice the tail of the CNB histogram.
Four buyer types, not one “Paris firm.” US and UK international partnerships whose Paris office is a local-rate branch of a New York or London P&L. Elite French independents whose P&L is Paris. Big Four law platforms selling tax and corporate volume. National full-service, whose headcount is not the 2026 8,000-HT cell. Décideurs, corrected 9 September 2025, published 2024 France-office figures as cabinet-declared, some rows marked estimated: Fidal EUR 284.42 million on 1,144 lawyers (EUR 248,619 per lawyer); EY Société d’Avocats EUR 247.91 million on 967 lawyers; Bredin Prat EUR 220 million on 222 lawyers (EUR 990,991 per lawyer); Gide EUR 210 million on 366 lawyers; Latham & Watkins EUR 135 million on 122 lawyers (EUR 1,106,557 per lawyer); Darrois Villey Maillot Brochier EUR 101 million (EUR 1,226,190 per lawyer). Revenue per lawyer measures fee intensity of the desk. It is not a collaborateur wage.
The capital clock behind those M&A and private-equity seats is France Invest’s 2025 census, published 25 March 2026: EUR 36.4 billion invested (down 1 percent versus 2024) into 2,904 companies and infrastructure projects; EUR 14.0 billion of exits at historical cost; EUR 42.9 billion raised. Buyout amounts held up on continuation funds. Chambers Private Equity 2026 – France, last updated 10 September 2026, is a second, wider clock — 2025 aggregate French PE deal value EUR 83.2 billion across 1,082 transactions; H1 2026 EUR 25.2 billion across 470 deals — and must not be merged with the France Invest member census. H1 2026 Q1 volumes were down 20.4 percent and value down 38.3 percent year on year. Continuation-fund and GP-led secondaries are the 2025–26 product those desks are selling. A 2021 IPO desk is not.
Public M&A and ECM hours collapsed in 2025. The AMF annual-report release of 28 May 2026 recorded 19 public offers opened during 2025 and 486 visas on financial operations. EY’s 17th Observatoire des opérations de marché, 3 February 2026, counted 18 public-offer visas versus 36 in 2024, offer value EUR 4.4 billion, two IPOs both on Euronext Growth, none on the Euronext Paris regulated market. Do not merge AMF 19 and EY 18. The public-markets seat that used to pay ECM hours is thin in 2025–26. The PE / LBO / LBO-finance / tax-funds seat is the substitute. A French independent’s own newsroom in 2026 promoted partner elevations in Corporate/M&A, FDI and infrastructure public law, a four-partner plus two-associate private-equity team in March, and counsel appointments in competition, LBO finance, tax and funds. Those are the 2026 hiring labels on the firm side of the table.
National barFee-dense Paris desk
- Legal-aid and local bars A state fee schedule and a national median near the CNB net-income cell. This is most of the profession by headcount, and it is not the buyer of the 8,000-HT tail.
- Volume platforms National full-service and Big Four law. Headcount in the hundreds and thousands. Fee intensity per lawyer sits well below the independent and US/UK Paris offices.
- US/UK offices and elite independents The desks whose 2024 France-office revenue per lawyer sits in seven figures. PE, M&A, FDI, competition, tax, funds. This is who can fund the histogram tail.
The posted cell is not the product the company is buying.
What a lawyer salary Paris posting is actually buying.
A company posting a Paris in-house cell is hiring a juriste, a directeur juridique, a head of legal or a general counsel — a CDI product whose 2026 statute buys a privileged memo, not a bar title.
AFJE, on its mission page updated 11 September 2026, still says it federates the 20,000 juristes d’entreprise of France and calls them the second legal profession after the avocats. That 20,000 figure is the association’s own federation claim, not a census; band in-house juristes nationally at about 18,000–22,000. Cercle Montesquieu, reported 15 June 2026, held its 4 June 2026 AGM as a club of more than 550 directeurs juridiques, compliance directors and secrétaires généraux. Public titles on that desk, employer described by type only: Directeur juridique Groupe of a holding; Directeur juridique of a listed REIT; General Counsel France of a bank; Directrice juridique of a hospitality group running an eight-lawyer team; Secrétaire général of a public reinsurer. Those titles are the posted in-house cell. They are not collaborateur seats.
Across 250 structured interviews with Paris lawyers, 61 of 84 in-house respondents — juriste, directeur juridique, general counsel, head of legal — over a 24-month window told Sartori their last open Paris legal seat had been priced against a hors-taxes collaborateur cell rather than a CDI juriste package. A general counsel at a PE-backed French industrial ETI put it without decoration: the company had posted a number copied from a US-firm Paris first-year rumor, and nobody who could do the work would take a CDI at that figure, because the shortlist read it as a collaborateur seat. A head of legal at a listed issuer said the 2026 brief was a privileged-memo writer under the new statute, after the ethics arrêté, not a bar-inscribed collaborateur who would have to leave the tableau.
APEC remains the public comparator that is not a search-firm product. The June 2025 barometer of 26,000 private-sector cadres put the national cadre median at EUR 55,000 gross, up 1.8 percent versus June 2024, and the juridique family at EUR 51,000. Sixty-five percent of APEC cadre ads showed a salary in 2025. That is the closest dated public in-house-adjacent number this page will carry. The AFJE–Cercle Montesquieu remuneration survey is omitted because it is co-produced with an executive-search firm. A company that needs a tighter band has to price the seat as a CDI with bonus, title, reporting line and — from 2026 into February 2027 — ethics-training hours, not as a rétrocession copied from a histogram tail the company is not hiring. The December 2025 APEC study of 111 job families prices a different cell from this June 2025 barometer median, and the seat count is on in-house counsel salary in Paris 2026.
| Instrument | Legal status | 2026 public cell | Who buys it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Collaboration libérale | Liberal profession; rétrocession HT; VAT extra; lawyer pays charges | Paris Ordre year-1 floor EUR 44,400 HT; modal band EUR 60,000–96,000 HT | Paris business firms (US/UK offices, elite independents, volume platforms) |
| Salaried avocat (IDCC 1850) | CDI inside a firm; 2.7 percent of the bar | Paris / IDF year-1 gross EUR 31,494; five-year / specialist EUR 52,131 | A thin employed-avocat product, not the 2026 business-firm default |
| Juriste d'entreprise | CDI cadre; no bar title; 2026-122 privileged memo from 2027 | APEC juridique-family median EUR 51,000 gross (June 2025) | Listed issuers, PE-backed ETIs, banks, public-shareholding bodies |
| Legal-aid practice | State fee schedule; 36 percent of avocats practice AJ | AJ credits EUR 714.176 million in 2026 — a public budget, not a wage | The State; a different cell from the US/UK Paris table |
Statute is rewriting the table. A hiring cycle is not.
Paris floors moved with the PASS on 1 January 2026. Merger thresholds lift from 1 September. FDI screening followed French issuers listed abroad from 17 August. None of that is a first-year raise.
Indexation of a floorRewrite of the in-house product
- The floor moves itself PASS indexation reprices every Paris collaboration already on the books. US and UK Paris offices paying well above the floor do not feel it as a bid. Small-bar desks do.
- Deal-desk hours shift PE and FDI stay on the clock. Public M&A and ECM do not. Merger-control volume at the mid-market is designed to fall. Staff the remaining notifiable work, not last year’s peak.
- The company product is named In-house confidentiality, ethics training, a legend on the memo. Still not a bar title. The posted cell that ignores this is the seat that stays open.
CNB assemblies on 12–13 March and 21–22 May 2026 asked the State to make unpaid rétrocession a ground for omission from the tableau and to make bar minima compulsory via the règlement intérieur. The 26 May 2026 note records three proposed amendments to décret n° 91-1197 of 27 November 1991. The Bureau is mandated to take the file to the public authorities. Until the décret is rewritten, Paris already has a floor; the rest of France does not have a compulsory one. That is a regulatory process about the floor, not a 2026 market raise, and it is not yet law.
Décret n° 2026-718 of 30 July 2026, in force 17 August 2026, extends the 10 percent voting-rights trigger for non-EU investors in a sensitive French company to issuers whose shares are admitted on named foreign markets, including US, UK, Swiss, Canadian, Singapore, Japanese and Korean venues. Ten-working-day notification to the Economy Minister, else ordinary authorization. Euronext Growth remains outside that listed-company mechanism. Regulation (EU) 2026/1386 of 17 June 2026 applies from 17 January 2028: mandatory screening in all Member States, coverage of indirect foreign investment and EU-based investors ultimately controlled from outside the EU. 2026–27 FDI counsel hours are French IEF plus implementation advice. The 2028 go-live is a second wave, not a 2026 headcount event. Junior PE associates on a 10 percent block in a Nasdaq-listed French biotech now have an IEF workstream. That is a diligence tax on every PE file, not a reason to over-hire a first-year class.
Loi n° 2026-403 of 26 May 2026, article 24, lifts merger thresholds from 1 September 2026: general EUR 250 million worldwide / EUR 80 million France (was 150 / 50); retail EUR 100 million / EUR 20 million (was 75 / 15). The Autorité’s FAQ applies the new thresholds to operations notified from that date. The Autorité recorded 328 merger decisions in 2025, up 11 percent, EUR 31 billion, 94 percent without commitments, zero Phase II, zero prohibitions; food retail about half the stock. ADVANT Altana, 28 May 2026, restates the Autorité’s estimate that 20 to 30 percent of current notifications drop out. Call-in power is still a proposal. Do not staff a 2026 junior competition class on the 328-file 2025 peak. Mid-market competition associates who lived on simplified filings lose volume; counsel-level work concentrates on remaining notifiable deals, foreign-subsidy review, FDI, retail, and abuse.
Decision 25-D-03 of 11 June 2025 imposed EUR 29.5 million on engineering, technology-consulting and IT-services gentlemen’s agreements not to solicit or hire, with an appeal pending before the Paris Court of Appeal. That is a 2025–28 advisory overlay on existing competition and employment seats at corporates and ESNs — in-house GC plus HR legal reviewing non-solicit language in MSAs — not a reason to staff a dedicated no-poach associate class. A EUR 50 legal-aid stamp, adopted in the 2026 finance law and due from 1 March 2026, is a volume and friction tax on the 36 percent of the bar that practices AJ. Do not put that cell in a US or UK Paris table.
Price the product. Then run the search on that product.
Sartori has worked the Paris associate line for eight years. Over the trailing three years the desk closed 26 associate searches at a 93 percent completion rate, on a typical 6 to 12 week timeline.
Of those 26 closed Paris associate searches over three years, 16 were PE, M&A, FDI or competition collaborateurs at US/UK international or elite independent Paris offices. Of the 26, 5 were rebriefed after the first shortlist because the posted cell sat on the 2026 Ordre floor while every shortlisted collaborateur was already invoicing inside the CNB 5,000–8,000 HT modal band. Those five still closed. They closed late, on a second cell, and they are the number on this page that does not flatter the method: a first brief written against a statutory floor will not hold a shortlist that already lives in the modal band. Counter-offer incidence on the same associate line is 36 percent. Median offer-to-acceptance is 8 working days, which is why a company that needs a week of internal sign-off after the verbal offer is already inside the window where the current patron can match.
Sartori maps Paris lawyers by bar and employer type. That file does not record rétrocession. When a company asks what a “market” collaborateur earns, the public distribution is the CNB histogram and the private read is that interview cohort — not a cell we can pull off our own file. Quarterly surveys have run since 2019; the global research programme maps nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles. Paris coverage is a coverage fact. It is not a pay database.
Two anonymous composites, presented as Sartori engagements. A Paris office of an international partnership instructed a years 2–3 M&A collaborateur against a posted cell sitting on the 2026 Ordre floor; the first shortlist collapsed, the file was rebriefed into the CNB modal band, and it closed in eleven weeks. A US firm’s Paris office instructed a years 4–5 private-equity collaborateur. That file closed in eight weeks. The current patron counter-offered. Both sit inside the 26; neither names a firm, a company or a lawyer.
Write the instrument on the requisition before you write the number. A general counsel, chief legal officer or head of HR who copies a hors-taxes cell onto a CDI is not pricing a seat.
- Name the product. Juriste, responsable juridique, directeur juridique, secrétaire général, general counsel. If you need an avocat, you are instructing a firm, not filling a payroll seat.
- Price a CDI, not a rétrocession. Gross, bonus, title, reporting line, and from 2026 the ethics-training hours the 2026-122 régime will require. APEC’s juridique-family median is a public floor for the conversation, not the band for a PE or listed-issuer desk.
- Do not gold-plate with a firm-side tail. The CNB 10,000 HT-and-above slice is 14 percent of Paris collaborateurs. It is not an in-house grade.
- Budget the privilege clock. Ethics arrêté pending; operational deadline 1 February 2027. Criminal, tax and Commission files still go outside.
- Staff deal hours to the live clock. PE, FDI and remaining notifiable mergers. Not last year’s 328-file peak, and not an ECM class the AMF and EY counts no longer support.
Read the instrument on the offer before you read the headline number. HT rétrocession, CDI gross and net income are not interchangeable, and VAT does not sit inside the collaborateur cell.
- If the seat is collaboration libérale, the 2026 Paris floor is EUR 3,700 / 4,100 HT a month and the Ordre-recommended tariff is EUR 4,440 / 4,870. Your invoice band is the CNB histogram, not the floor.
- If the seat is in-house, you are leaving the tableau. The 2026 statute does not let you keep avocat secrecy on a company payroll. What it buys is a privileged memo, with listed carve-outs.
- Do not treat a US-looking cell as a CDI. A posted number that matches a rétrocession rumor is often exactly that: a rumor, and the wrong contract.
- Convert at the ECB fix, then subtract the charges that sit outside an HT cell before you compare it to a salaried gross.
- The pipeline is still collaborateur-first. CNB says 93 percent of new CAPA holders exercise that way. A company CDI is a change of profession, not a change of grade.
The service view of the company brief sits on our in-house and general counsel recruiting page and, for the collaborateur line, on associate recruiting. The Paris market map — who hires, which desks, how the city sits against the rest of the bar — is a different article: the Paris legal market in 2026. Companies building a legal function rather than repricing a cell should start with building an in-house legal team. A conversation about a live France seat goes through the hiring desk.
Common questions about lawyer pay in France in 2026
What is a typical lawyer salary France figure for 2026?
There is no single 2026 cell: Paris Ordre full-time rétrocession minima are EUR 3,700 HT a month in year one and EUR 4,100 from year two. The UJA de Paris recommended tariff, which the Ordre flags as its recommended scale, sits at EUR 4,440 / 4,870 HT. The CNB Collaboration 2026 survey then measures what Paris collaborateurs actually invoice: the modal band is EUR 5,000–8,000 HT a month (39 percent). Converted at the ECB reference of 11 September 2026 (USD 1.1592 per euro), the Ordre year-one floor is about USD 51,468 a year. A company posting an in-house cell is buying a different instrument — a CDI juriste — and should not copy any of those hors-taxes figures onto a salaried offer.
What does a Paris in-house legal seat actually pay in 2026?
APEC’s June 2025 cadre barometer puts the administratif, organisation et juridique family median at EUR 51,000 gross. That is a salaried-cadre instrument, not an avocat rétrocession, and it is the closest dated public in-house-adjacent cell that is not co-authored by a search firm. AFJE’s own mission page, updated 11 September 2026, still federates about 20,000 juristes d’entreprise; Cercle Montesquieu’s 4 June 2026 AGM is a club of more than 550 general counsel, compliance directors and secrétaires généraux. The posted title on that desk is directeur juridique, head of legal or general counsel — not collaborateur.
Why do Paris in-house seats stay open when the 2026 table looks full?
Because the posted cell is usually a collaborateur rétrocession, and the company is buying a CDI juriste. Across 250 structured interviews with Paris lawyers, 61 of 84 in-house respondents over a 24-month window said their last open Paris legal seat had been priced against a hors-taxes collaborateur cell. Loi n° 2026-122 of 23 February 2026 makes the product split legally explicit: the company is hiring a juriste who can, after the ethics arrêté, write a privileged memo — and still has to instruct an avocat when the file is criminal, tax, or a Commission inspection. The European e-Justice portal still states that in France the avocat cannot be avocat en entreprise.
How long does it take to fill a Paris associate or in-house legal seat?
Sartori’s Paris associate desk works to a typical 6 to 12 week timeline at a 93 percent completion rate. The files that ran past that window were the ones where the posted cell described a rétrocession and the buyer was a company filling a salaried seat. Median offer-to-acceptance on the associate line is 8 working days; counter-offer incidence is 36 percent. Budget a second clock for the 2026 privilege statute: ethics training whose référentiel still awaits a joint Justice and Economy arrêté, with the confidentiality regime in force by 1 February 2027.
Is a French in-house counsel an avocat?
No. Loi n° 2026-122 of 23 February 2026 creates a document-level confidentiality, in force by 1 February 2027, not a bar title. The European e-Justice portal’s France training page still states that CRFPA training is not designed for people who want to become juristes d’entreprise, and that the avocat and the juriste d’entreprise exercise two distinct professions. CNB 2026 key figures put salariés — the thin employed-avocat product — at 2.7 percent of the bar. A company that posts a Magic Circle-looking rétrocession against a directeur juridique job is shopping in the wrong profession.
How should a company convert EUR figures to USD for a 2026 offer?
Convert at the ECB euro reference: USD 1.1592 per euro on 11 September 2026. Apply that rate to a named instrument — HT rétrocession, CDI gross, or net income — and keep VAT and social charges outside the cell. Mixing a hors-taxes collaborateur number with a salaried gross is how a Paris in-house seat stays open. The conversions in the table below use that ECB fix and no other.
Paris Ordre floors, CNB histograms, and the 2026 statutes.
Floors and recommended tariffs come from the Paris Bar and the UJA. The distribution comes from the CNB Observatoire. In-house-adjacent medians come from APEC. Deal and fee clocks come from Décideurs, France Invest, the AMF, EY and the Autorité de la concurrence. USD is the ECB reference of 11 September 2026.

Hors-taxes rétrocession, CDI gross, cadre median and net income measure different things and are not additive. France Invest member-census investment and Chambers announced-deal value are two PE clocks; AMF opened offers and EY visas are two public-M&A clocks. National avocat headcount is banded across Justice (1 January 2023), the live directory and data.gouv snapshots. AFJE's 20,000 is a federation claim, banded here. Firm-named 2026 first-year grids were not accessed from any law-firm announcement and are omitted. In-house pay surveys co-authored by search firms are omitted.
Our own numbers — the interview cohort, the mandate telemetry, the counter-offer incidence and the offer-to-acceptance window — come from the continuous research program described on our research page, which sets out the cohorts, the survey waves and the mapping coverage behind every Sartori figure quoted above.
