Lateral Partner Recruiters in Paris
Retained search for a Paris associé. The Ministry of Justice counted 9,422 associés at the Paris bar on 1 January 2023. Whether the book follows depends on the client's choice of counsel, not on a heading that says non-compete.
What a Paris associé move actually turns on.
Paris associé moves turn on client choice, not on a non-compete heading
For lateral partner recruiting Paris, hiring partners underwrite an associé whose clients can still choose counsel. The Ministry of Justice counted 9,422 associés at the Paris bar on 1 January 2023, published in February 2025. The Paris Order set a 3,700-euro HT full-time collaborator floor on 1 January 2026. Sartori closed 18 partner searches here over three years; counter-offers hit 40 percent of accepted shortlists, and the median offer-to-acceptance was 14 working days. An international firm's Paris private-equity desk hired an equity associé in 19 weeks.
Lateral partner recruiting Paris is a retained search for an associé whose clients can follow. Firm leaders who ask for legal recruiters for partners Paris are buying that associé search, not a collaborator campaign. The addressable census is large and dated. On 1 January 2023 the Paris bar had 31,834 avocats, 43.0 percent of the national total of 73,998, in the Ministry of Justice DACS census published in February 2025. Inside that bar, 9,422 were associés, up from 6,341 in 2013, a 48.6 percent rise. Collaborateurs were 12,435. Individual practitioners were 9,775. Salaried avocats were 202. A hiring committee that treats those four modes as one bench will brief the wrong product.
Sartori & Partners has worked the Paris partner line for 8 years. Over the trailing three years the desk closed 18 partner searches at a 93 percent completion rate, on a typical timeline of 4 to 7 months. Of those 18 files, 7 were private-equity or M&A, 4 were disputes or arbitration, 3 were finance, 2 were tax, and 2 were competition or regulatory. The same 18 split 11 equity associé seats and 7 non-equity or counsel-track seats.
The local constraint is legal, not a shortage of names. Across 64 of 250 structured interviews with Paris partners and counsel, equity associés named the partnership agreement, not the cash package, as the reason a prior process died. 41 of those 64 said a non-solicit would have been acceptable and a ban on advising the client would not. That read sits next to a judgment, not a survey of recruiters: on 21 March 2018 the Cour de cassation held that a clause which forces the lawyer to refuse the client denies the client's choice of counsel.

Four modes of practice, three kinds of buyer.
The Paris lateral market is a set of legal categories, not a league table. The DACS census of 1 January 2023, published in February 2025, splits the 31,834 Paris-bar avocats by mode of practice: 39.1 percent collaborateurs (12,435), 30.7 percent individual practitioners (9,775), 29.6 percent associés (9,422), and 0.6 percent salaried avocats (202). Nationally the associé share is higher and the collaborateur share is lower. Paris is the bar where the collaborator bench is the largest slice, which is why a partner search that starts from a collaborator grid mis-prices the seat.
Buyers fall into three structures. First, multi-partner vehicles — SEL, AARPI, SCP — replacing or adding an equity or non-equity associé under a pacte. Second, Paris offices of international firms adding a French-law book or a cross-border book that already sits in English or New York law. Third, the individual practitioner, 9,775 lawyers, who is almost never the instructing client for a lateral associé. The Ministry's national count of foreign avocats on a French bar was 2,773 on the same date, and more than three-quarters of them were on the Paris bar. That is the supply for an international-office seat. It is not a ranking of those offices.
Groupings follow the same concentration. The DACS report puts 37.2 percent of law-firm groupings in the Paris bar alone, and notes that the Paris bar holds 58 percent of the country's collaborateurs. A practice-group build therefore competes for associés inside a city that already holds the collaborator bench those associés staff. The city overview, including corporate, finance and disputes depth, is on the Paris location page. The wider 2026 map of who hires, including the company-side juriste the bar roll does not list, is the Paris legal market article. Firm leaders who want the method without the city sit on lateral partner recruiting.
Demand in 2026 is not evenly spread across those 9,422 associés. France Invest, on 25 March 2026, reported 36.4 billion euros invested by French private equity in 2025. That is a funds-and-M&A clock, and it matches where our closed files sat: 7 of 18. Public markets are a thinner clock. The AMF, publishing its 2025 annual report on 28 May 2026, recorded 19 public offers opened in 2025. A Paris corporate committee that staffs a public-M&A associé against the private-equity invested figure is briefing the busier product. In the trailing 90 days, Sartori was instructed on 4 concurrent Paris partner seats, 3 of them private equity or M&A.
Client choice limits what a non-compete can lock.
Portability in Paris is a rule with a date, then a contract. On 21 March 2018 the first civil chamber of the Cour de cassation (n° 17-16.762) rejected an appeal and left in place the nullity of a lawyer's non-compete. The clause ran for three years from departure and reached every client the firm had billed in the 24 months before it was signed. It did not stop at a ban on solicitation. It barred the lawyer from advising or assisting those clients, and so required him to refuse a matter they wanted to give him. The Court treated that as a denial of the client's freedom to choose counsel, disproportionate to the interests the clause claimed to protect. Le Monde du Droit reported the holding on 12 April 2018.
The collaboration contract is a stricter, older ban, and it does not govern the associé. Article 7, fifth paragraph, of the law of 31 December 1971 says a collaboration contract or an employment contract must not limit the collaborator's later freedom of establishment. The Conseil national des barreaux, in the Guide de la collaboration (first edition, January 2025), states the consequence in its own words: a non-compete has no place in a collaboration contract, and the contract may not stop a client from following the collaborator. Article 14.7.6 of the Règlement intérieur national still prohibits unfair competition. If, within two years of the break, the former collaborator acts for a client of the old firm, the lawyer must inform that firm first. Notice is not a restraint. A clause that makes the lawyer indemnify the firm because a client chose to follow is treated as prohibited. CNB ethics opinion 2024-050 of 29 November 2024, cited in the same guide, also blocks a clause that stops the departing collaborator from hiring the firm's other collaborateurs.
An associé move is the pacte, read against the 2018 holding. The partnership agreement can restrict solicitation. It cannot, on that judgment, force the associé to turn the client away. Sartori's Paris mandate telemetry is blunt about the cost of skipping that read. Of the 18 closed partner searches over three years, 6 needed a second shortlist after the first book failed the client-choice test. Those 6 still closed. They closed late. A first shortlist built on a pitched book, before the pacte is read, does not survive the rule.
A practice chair at an international firm's Paris corporate group told us, The pacte named the clients. The 2018 rule said those clients could still instruct him. We rewrote the non-solicit before we priced the guarantee. Conflicts run on a second track. French déontologie still bars a lawyer from acting against a current client, and a Paris-seated arbitration does not erase a court-side conflict. We clear the general description of adverse matters before a name reaches the committee. The parent page on how a book is underwritten, including the questionnaire and the first hundred days, remains lateral partner recruiting.
The published Paris floor is not partner pay.
The only Paris cash floor with a 2026 date is a collaborator floor. The Paris Order, restated on 17 April 2026, set full-time rétrocession minima at 3,700 euros HT a month in year one and 4,100 euros HT from year two, in force for contracts already running on 1 January 2026, indexed to a monthly social-security ceiling of 4,005 euros. VAT is extra. The Order's own note says the collaborator may still develop a personal clientele. That cell is the deontological minimum for a collaborateur. It is not an associé's profit share, and it is not a guarantee.
The distribution above the floor is also a collaborator distribution. The CNB Collaboration survey, fieldwork September–October 2025, report issued in 2026, put 39 percent of Paris collaborator respondents in the 5,000–8,000 euros HT monthly band and 28 percent at 8,000 euros HT and above. Use it to see what the bench under an associé is already invoicing. Do not paste it onto an equity admission. The full stack — Order floor, CNB histogram, salaried-avocat minima, and why a posted cell stays open — is the 2026 lawyer salary guide for France. What "counsel", "of counsel" and non-equity partner mean in Paris as against London, Milan and Frankfurt is counsel and non-equity partner in Europe.
No regulator published a 2026 Paris profits-per-partner figure. Reported books, including the Paris distribution, are on partner book of business by market. A London PEP print is a different partnership and a different currency: London partner compensation in 2026 is the comparison committees reach for, and it is not the Paris draw. Candidates price three items ahead of a headline profit share: the year-one guarantee, the writing on shared originations, and whether the pacte still lets the client instruct them. Of 16 offers inside the 18 closed files, the median from written offer to acceptance was 14 working days. Counter-offers hit 40 percent of accepted shortlists, usually by extending the guarantee or rewriting credit, not by matching a published scale that does not exist.
Company buyers pricing the lawyer who leaves the bar for a directeur juridique seat should not use these collaborator floors. In-house cash for Paris is on general counsel salary in Paris and in-house counsel salary in Paris. The search for that seat is not this one.
Four to seven months, and where the file stalls.
A typical Paris partner move on this desk takes 4 to 7 months. That is the timeline on 18 closed searches over three years, at a 93 percent completion rate. The clock starts when the brief names the mode — equity associé, non-equity, or counsel-track — and the conflicts the firm will not live with. It does not start when a name is already in the market.
The sequence is stable. Week one is the written brief: practice, portable-revenue test, and the clauses the firm will and will not accept. The pacte is read before outreach, against the 21 March 2018 holding, so a ban on advising is not mistaken for a non-solicit. Approach is confidential and one name at a time. The shortlist carries three years of matters, not a curriculum vitae. The offer is written inside the authority the partnership will actually vote. Notice is whatever the pacte sets. There is no statutory garden leave to hide inside. Of the 18, the 6 that needed a second shortlist are the stall: they died once on the client list and reopened only after the clause was rewritten or the target was dropped.
Three engagements, anonymised, inside that book. An international firm's Paris private-equity desk hired an equity associé in 19 weeks. The first list failed the client-choice test; the second list's matters matched the fund documents the office already staffed; the current firm counter-offered, inside the 40 percent rate, and the candidate accepted on scope of origination credit rather than on a higher guarantee. A Paris disputes group hired an arbitration associé in 6 months. One adverse party on a pending Paris-seated matter removed the first choice; the replacement had no court-side overlap and started inside the 4 to 7 month band. A finance practice converted a counsel-track lawyer to an associé path in 5 months. The offer window was 14 working days, the same median as the 16 written offers in the book.
The uncomfortable count is the second shortlist, not the completion rate. 6 of 18 closed files were not right the first time. A committee that wants a single round should budget the pacte reading before the first conversation, not after the candidate has already told clients a date.
Retained, and priced off the hire's first year.
Every Paris partner mandate is retained. The fee is 25–30 percent of the hire's total first-year compensation. Thirty percent of that fee is paid at engagement and kept if the client cancels. There is no contingent alternative on this desk. The global research map behind the shortlist is 1,480,000+ lawyers. Paris coverage inside that map is roughly 9,000 lawyers.
The work itself is six steps, and the Paris-specific step is the second. The brief fixes the mode of practice and the conflicts. The market map is drawn from coverage, not from whoever has called a recruiter. The pacte and the 2018 rule are applied before a name moves. Approach stays blind both ways until both sides want the conversation. The shortlist is evidence: matters, credit, and what the clause actually says. Close covers the counter-offer — 40 percent of accepted shortlists — and the notice the pacte already wrote down. We stay through the first months after the start date, because a book that was real in diligence can still fail if the client was never told in a way the rule allows.
Across 250 structured interviews with Paris partners and counsel, the question that decided movement was whether the client could still instruct the lawyer after the vote. Cash mattered after that, inside the 14 working days once the guarantee was on paper. Firms comparing this city with the associate bench, or with a company-side general counsel search, should keep the books separate: the partner line is the 18 closed files. The place to instruct the search is a client conversation or a short call. Partners weighing a move of their own start at the partner advisory, not at a public posting.

What Paris hiring partners ask before they open a search
Who are the best lateral partner recruiters in Paris?
No independent ranking of lateral partner recruiters in Paris exists, so the useful test is mapped coverage, published method and searches actually closed. Sartori & Partners maps roughly 9,000 lawyers in Paris and has worked this market for 8 years. Over the trailing three years we closed 18 lateral partner recruiting searches here at a 93 percent completion rate, with a median timeline of 4 to 7 months. Across 64 of 250 structured interviews with Paris partners and counsel, equity associés named the partnership agreement, not cash, as the reason a prior process died. Cohort definitions and method are published in our research programme.
How long does lateral partner recruiting Paris usually take?
Sartori's Paris partner desk works to a typical 4 to 7 months, across 18 closed partner searches over three years at a 93 percent completion rate. Median offer-to-acceptance is 14 working days once the guarantee is written. Counter-offers land on 40 percent of accepted shortlists. Of those 18 closed files, 6 needed a second shortlist after the first book failed the client-choice test. An international firm's Paris private-equity desk hired an equity associé in 19 weeks.
Can a Paris associé non-compete stop clients from following?
Not when the clause forces the lawyer to refuse the client. On 21 March 2018 the Cour de cassation (civ. 1re, n° 17-16.762) upheld the nullity of a three-year clause that barred a lawyer from advising clients the firm had billed in the prior 24 months, because it denied those clients their choice of counsel. A pure non-solicit is a different instrument. For collaborateurs, not associés, article 7 of the law of 31 December 1971 already forbids a non-compete in the collaboration contract, and RIN article 14.7.6 requires notice to the former firm for two years if the lawyer later acts for one of its clients (CNB Guide de la collaboration, January 2025).
What does a Paris law-firm partner actually earn?
No bar, regulator or court published a 2026 Paris associé profit share. The dated cash floors are collaborator rétrocession, not partner draw: the Paris Order set 3,700 euros HT a month for a full-time year-one collaborator and 4,100 euros HT from year two, in force 1 January 2026. The 2026 France lawyer salary guide holds those cells. Equity versus non-equity title in Paris, London, Milan and Frankfurt is on counsel and non-equity partner in Europe. Reported Paris books sit on partner book of business by market. A London PEP print is not a Paris draw: see London partner compensation in 2026.
How is an associé search different from hiring a collaborateur in Paris?
The associé search underwrites a partnership agreement and a client list. The collaborateur search underwrites a rétrocession and a contract that cannot contain a non-compete. Of Sartori's 18 closed Paris partner searches over three years, 11 were equity associé seats and 7 were non-equity or counsel-track seats. The Paris associate line is a separate book, with its own closed-search count, on the France salary guide. The parent method for any later partner mandate is lateral partner recruiting.
Which Paris firm categories hire lateral associés?
Three structures, not a ranking. Multi-partner vehicles (SEL, AARPI, SCP) hiring an equity or non-equity associé. International-firm Paris offices adding a French-law or cross-border book. Individual practitioners are 30.7 percent of the Paris bar and are rarely the buyer. On 1 January 2023 the Ministry of Justice counted 9,422 associés, 12,435 collaborateurs, 9,775 individual practitioners and 202 salaried avocats inside 31,834 Paris-bar lawyers (published February 2025). The city map is on Paris.
A Paris brief
Name the mode of practice before you name the lawyer.
Tell us whether you need an equity associé, a non-equity path, or a counsel-track seat, and which clients the pacte may not lock. We read the clause against the 2018 rule before anyone is approached.
