London partner compensation 2026: the PEP the market discards.
A&O Shearman printed GBP 2.2 million / USD 2.9 million PEP for the year ended 30 April 2026. That is the 2026 London partner figure everyone still quotes. It is a global average, not a London-office draw, and it is not the cash a general counsel matches on payroll.
The 2026 London number is a ratio. Pick which cell you mean.
A&O Shearman, a London-headquartered combined firm, published PEP of GBP 2.2 million / USD 2.9 million for the year ended 30 April 2026. Firms and general counsel who search for law firm partner salary London are almost always looking at that PEP cell, and it is the wrong cell for take-home and for a company payroll match. Across 750 structured interviews with London partners and counsel, that is the first distinction the cohort draws.
A&O Shearman PEP for the year ended 30 April 2026 — GBP 2.2 million / USD 2.9 million, a global average for the combined firm, not a London-office draw. A&O Shearman ↗
Four cells, one job title. Magic Circle PEP is a firm-wide profit average in two currencies. The in-house median is employer-survey cash. They are not substitutes. Cited below.
- 6.2%
- Average PEP growth across the UK top 50 for the financial year to about April 2025 — the discarded average, rising slower than the top of equity. Latest edition this page cites.
- Law.com International, 15–16 September 2025 (FY to about April 2025)
- 18.6%
- Rise in the average top of equity at those same firms, to GBP 1.38 million — the end of the grid the average no longer describes.
- Law.com International, 16 September 2025 (FY to about April 2025)
- ~10%
- Fall in the average bottom of equity, to GBP 291,000, over the same UK top-50 package.
- Law.com International, 16 September 2025 (FY to about April 2025)
- 9.6%
- Rise in equity-partner numbers at the average UK top-50 firm — more owners in the denominator, which is why PEP lagged profit.

The 2026 law firm partner salary London table, by firm and year.
Every cell below is a dated, firm-published or Gazette-collated PEP (or all-partner profit) figure. USD appears only where the firm printed it. Year sits inside the row.
We have worked the London partner market for more than 10 years, for Magic Circle and City partnerships and for the general counsel desks that instruct them. Over the trailing three years we closed 22 London partner searches at a 93 percent completion rate, on a typical timeline of 4 to 7 months. The table is not our file. It is the public ladder those files are priced against.

Linklaters, Macfarlanes, Ashurst and Travers Smith did not print a USD PEP in the releases and reports cited, and this page does not convert them. Prefer the firm-published dollar cells in the A&O Shearman and Clifford Chance rows.
Read the year column before the money. A&O Shearman’s FY25 cell is the first combined year after the 1 May 2024 combination; the FY26 cell is the 2026 print, up 12 percent in PEP on the firm’s own USD measure. Clifford Chance rose 9 percent to GBP 2.3 million and Linklaters 11.4 percent to GBP 2.48 million, while Macfarlanes held at GBP 3.1 million. HSF Kramer’s FY26 row is unaudited and mixes two legacy year-ends. A general counsel comparing those 2026 cells is not comparing like with like, and a partner quoting only the highest one is not quoting a London take-home.
Two City names are missing on purpose. Freshfields stopped voluntary PEP disclosure in 2023; the Law Gazette, on 12 December 2025, reported Companies House LLP accounts showing a profit for discretionary division of GBP 648 million among 296 LLP members for the year ended 30 April 2025 — a statutory profit pool, not a published PEP, and not treated as one here. Slaughter and May remains a general partnership, so it does not file the LLP accounts that produce a public PEP; Law.com International’s 16 September 2025 ranking put it at GBP 3.75 million for the financial year to about April 2025. That is a journalist ranking, not a firm announcement, no 2026 edition was found, and it stays out of the table.
Published PEP is the figure London equity partners discard when they describe take-home.
PEP is the average. Take-home is a different instrument.
Three haircuts sit between the press cell and a bank account: the nonequity layer, the lockstep or merit spread, and tax on allocated profit. None of them is optional, and none of them is in the PEP release.
Press averageCash in a personal account
- Firm-wide PEP Distributable profit divided by equity partners. A global ratio. Not a London seat, not a draw, not a paycheck.
- Drawings after nonequity Partnership profit is often stated after nonequity remuneration. The lockstep or merit grid then splits what remains.
- Taxed take-home Equity LLP members are taxed on allocated profit, not on drawings. Capital lock-up sits on top. The press cell never reaches this step.
Clifford Chance’s own 22 July 2026 note is the measured nonequity haircut at that firm: partnership profit of GBP 1.05 billion, and PEP of GBP 2.3 million / USD 3.1 million, calculated after remuneration of nonequity partners and excluding profit-related annuities. Linklaters, on 21 July 2026, printed both instruments for the year ended 30 April 2026 — PEP of GBP 2.48 million and profit per all partners of GBP 2.31 million. The GBP 0.17 million gap is nonequity dilution at this firm, not a market-wide rule.
The spread inside equity is larger than that haircut. Law.com International, on 16 September 2025, recorded an average top of equity of GBP 1.38 million, up 18.6 percent, against an average bottom of equity of GBP 291,000, down nearly 10 percent, at the UK top 50 for the financial year to about April 2025. Average PEP at those firms rose 6.2 percent. Profit rose faster than PEP because equity-partner numbers rose 9.6 percent. The average is the number the grid has stopped describing. No 2026 edition of that ranking was found, so these are 2025-vintage cells and are labeled so.
Tax sits after the grid. For the tax year 6 April 2026 to 5 April 2027, GOV.UK puts the additional rate at 45 percent on taxable income over GBP 125,140, with the Personal Allowance tapered to zero by that threshold. Equity LLP members are taxed on allocated profit, not on drawings. HMRC’s Partnership Manual at PM251010 treats an LLP member as a salaried member — PAYE and employee NICs — only if Conditions A, B and C all hold: disguised salary, no significant influence, and capital contribution below 25 percent of disguised salary. Freshfields’ nonequity tier, reported by Law.com International on 19 February 2026, has to live on that statute. A take-home rule of thumb is not in any of those instruments, and this page does not invent one.
Across 750 structured interviews with London partners and counsel, 96 of 168 equity partners sitting inside Magic Circle and City LLPs over a 24-month window told Sartori that the PEP in the press release was not the number they took home in the year they were asked. A practice chair at a Magic Circle LLP, in that same window, put it shorter: PEP is a press number; the lockstep grid is the real one.

Capability spot rate from 1 April 2024 (2024-25 bands), FOI 25_036 dated 21 February 2025.
Government Legal Department FOI 25_036 ↗The partnership distributes PEP. The general counsel funds the invoice.
Two readers sit on this page: the London partner who earns the 2026 cell, and the firm leadership or general counsel who pays for the work that produces it. They are not looking at the same instrument.
The Solicitors Regulation Authority recorded, in its financial statements for the year ended 31 October 2025, that more than 34,000 solicitors work in-house — around one in five. Those solicitors sit on company payrolls. Their employers are not SRA-authorized firms. The SRA’s employer guidance, updated 18 November 2024, is written for senior executives, non-executives, HR and anyone managing legal teams: the company cannot expect the general counsel to change legal advice to hit a commercial goal, and there is no mandatory SRA indemnity insurance outside a regulated firm. That is the buyer. PEP is the seller’s ratio.
The 2026 cell is earned inside an SRA-authorized partnership — Magic Circle LLP, City specialist, or US-headquartered international LLP — as an equity or nonequity allocation, not as PAYE salary.
- Equity partners take a share of residual profit after nonequity cost. The published PEP is the average of that share, not the individual grid point.
- Nonequity partners are a fixed cost. Clifford Chance states the FY26 profit figure after their remuneration; Linklaters prints a separate all-partner profit cell so the dilution is visible.
- US London partners are typically solicitors of England and Wales, Registered Foreign Lawyers, or both. Kirkland & Ellis International LLP’s London regulatory notice (SRA 349107) says so on the office page. Their global PEP is not a London draw.
- The credential gate is an SRA practicing certificate, or RFL registration where a foreign lawyer wants to be a manager of an authorized body other than a licensed body, per SRA guidance updated 13 February 2025.
The invoice is funded by the general counsel, chief legal officer or head of legal who instructs the firm — listed corporates, banks and insurers, private-capital sponsors, and public bodies.
- Listed-company GCs sit on executive committees. GSK, LSEG, BT Group and Centrica all identify a London-based group general counsel on the 2025 leadership team; none of those four statutory directors’ remuneration tables discloses GC pay. That is a disclosure gap, not a hidden PEP.
- Sponsor legal desks are both clients and employers. Davis Polk’s 15 January 2026 takeover recap put private-equity bidders at about 30 percent of calendar-2025 firm offers, down from 43 percent; strategic bidders about 60 percent. Those desks buy City advice. They do not match City PEP on payroll.
- Public-body desks are a third cash world. The Bank of England Legal Directorate describes an in-house team of around 170, hiring typically at 1–4 years’ PQE or 4+ for more senior seats. The FCA advertised a London Commercial Lawyer role at GBP 55,000 to GBP 67,000. Neither is a PEP conversation.
| Seat | Year in the cell | Cash or PEP | What the buyer is looking at |
|---|---|---|---|
| UK heads of legal (IDR median) | 2025 survey, published Dec 2025 | ~GBP 150,000; some above GBP 200,000 | Employer-survey cash, not LTIP |
| GLD Grade 6 lawyer, London, Level 3 | from 1 Apr 2024 (2024-25 bands) | GBP 81,000 | Public-body capability spot rate; no later FOI found |
| FCA Commercial Lawyer, London | 2026 posting | GBP 55,000 to GBP 67,000 | Regulator employee band, NQ to 3 PQE |
| Magic Circle PEP (A&O Shearman) | FY ended 30 Apr 2026 | GBP 2.2m / USD 2.9m | Global profit average, not a payroll number |
The desk under that general counsel is not a PEP conversation either. Incomes Data Research, on 11 December 2025, put the London newly qualified in-house median at GBP 57,000 against a UK median of GBP 44,263, and London legal advisers at GBP 66,934 against a UK median of GBP 59,050. Bonus targets were highest at senior levels; senior in-house legal advisers typically saw a 12 percent bonus, a GBP 7,000 car allowance and private medical. That is the cash ladder a company actually runs. It does not scale to Magic Circle PEP at the top.
Across the same 750-interview London cohort, 91 of 142 general counsel and heads of legal at corporates, banks and sponsors over a 24-month window said they cannot match Magic Circle PEP in cash. A group general counsel at a FTSE-listed corporate, in that window, said the remuneration committee would not open a PEP conversation for an internal legal seat. A general counsel matching Magic Circle PEP in cash is not a compensation conversation. It is a category error.
A general counsel matching Magic Circle PEP in cash is not a compensation conversation. It is a category error.
The London partner seat is a practice label, not a lockstep class.
Headcount tells you where the lawyers sit. It does not tell you what they take home. The two have to be read in that order, or the PEP table gets mistaken for a staffing map.
Pirical, on 11 June 2025, put 22,225 of The Lawyer UK 100 lawyers in London — 56 percent of that population. Manchester was next, just over 2,700. London UK 100 headcount was up 20 percent over three years. That is coverage, not compensation, and it is a June 2025 snapshot; no 2026 edition was found. Sartori maps roughly 30,000 lawyers in London; the Pirical cut is the UK 100 slice of the same city, not a second interview count.
The partner seats that actually moved in 2026 were not a generalist lockstep wave. A US-headquartered New York firm’s London office announced, in January 2026, a Head of European Infrastructure M&A into the corporate department; the work list was acquisitions, dispositions, JVs, consortium deals, restructurings, LBOs and take-privates for private-equity and infrastructure funds. In April 2026 a US-headquartered firm announced a London corporate partner whose practice is private-equity and infrastructure investor transactions. The individuals are not named here. The practice labels are the hiring signal: private capital, infrastructure M&A, funds, leveraged and private-credit finance, disputes and investigations.
US-headquartered offices are a distinct employer type, not a Magic Circle lockstep with a dollar sign. Kirkland’s London page describes more than 500 attorneys advising financial investors and private-equity, real estate, special-situations and other investment funds. Legal Business, on 12 June 2026, reported that Kirkland and Latham had both cleared USD 1 billion in UK revenue and each had roughly 600 City lawyers. Paul Weiss, in the Legal Business Global London ranking of 19 May 2025 (2024 headcount), sat at 215 London lawyers, up 283.9 percent on 2023, including 40 partners. The same ranking recorded a 3 percent rise in total lawyers across the 50 largest non-UK firms in London in 2024, and 22 of those 50 saw London lawyer count decrease or stay the same. Half the international City is hiring. Half is not.
| Firm | Year in the cell | Global PEP | What it is not |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kirkland & Ellis | FY 2025 / Am Law 2026 | USD 11.121m | Global PEP; London-office draw unpublished |
| Davis Polk | FY 2025 / Am Law 2026 | USD 9.800m | Global PEP; London-office draw unpublished |
| Latham & Watkins | FY 2025 / Am Law 2026 | USD 8.654m | Global PEP; London-office draw unpublished |
| Paul Weiss | FY 2025 / Am Law 2026 | USD 8.631m | Global PEP; London-office draw unpublished |
Am Law 100 partner headcount in the UK was up 22 percent since 2022 in the same Pirical June 2025 snapshot; Kirkland had 230 UK partners in that cut. Citi’s 2026 Client Advisory, drawing on a nine-month 2025 flash of 185 firms, recorded equity-partner headcount down 0.5 percent and income-partner growth of 6 percent, with all headcount growth from salaried lawyers. The London partner title is stretching in the same direction as the US one: more nonequity, flatter equity, a published average that describes fewer people.
Three clocks are rewriting which partner seat is worth the cell.
Capital-markets rebuild, conduct-and-crime overlay, partnership-structure race. The PEP table is a lagging print of those clocks, not a forecast of them.
Listing rebuildPartnership redesign
- Capital-markets rebuild New listing rules, stamp-duty listing relief, Takeover Code dual-class and IPO amendments. Public M&A and ECM partners, not a generalist promotion wave.
- Conduct and crime overlay Direct CMA consumer enforcement, failure-to-prevent fraud, Companies House identity verification, NSI litigation. Investigations and competition seats on both sides of the invoice.
- Partnership-structure race Transatlantic combinations and a Magic Circle nonequity tier. The firm is protecting PEP, not cutting it to general-counsel levels.
The FCA’s UK Listing Rules have been in force since 29 July 2024. Stamp Duty Reserve Tax listing relief, published by GOV.UK on 26 November 2025, exempts the 0.5 percent charge on agreements to transfer securities of a company newly listed on a UK regulated market for three years from listing, for agreements on or after 27 November 2025; change-of-control transfers in a merger or takeover are carved out. The Takeover Code dual-class, IPO and buyback amendments took effect on 4 February 2026. EY-Parthenon, on 6 January 2026, counted 23 London listings in 2025 raising GBP 2.1 billion, with 11 of those IPOs in the fourth quarter raising GBP 1.9 billion. The hiring consequence is ECM and public M&A partners at Magic Circle and US London offices, plus issuer general counsel for ongoing UKLR compliance — not a 2025 full-year boom, a 2026 pipeline.
Cyclical public M&A stayed volume-stable and value-light. The Takeover Panel, for the year ended 31 March 2025, recorded 57 firm offers with aggregate value of approximately GBP 43 billion. Davis Polk’s calendar-2025 recap, dated 15 January 2026, also counted 57 firm offers, with aggregate value over GBP 37.8 billion, down from GBP 50 billion in 2024. US bidders appeared in 18 of 57, including 7 of 11 offers over GBP 1 billion. Citi’s 2026 advisory, on a nine-month 2025 flash of 185 firms, recorded revenue up 11.3 percent, demand up 1.9 percent and rates up 9.6 percent, with delayed middle-market M&A; the Law Firm Leaders Survey still placed London as the number-two growth market after the United States. Sponsor-side partner hiring did not freeze when PE’s share of public offers slipped; it moved into private deals, take-privates and infrastructure.
The conduct overlay is a different desk. The Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act direct-consumer powers commenced on 6 April 2025; the CMA can fine up to 10 percent of worldwide turnover. Failure to prevent fraud, ECCTA section 199, came into force on 1 September 2025 for large organizations. Companies House identity verification became a legal requirement from 18 November 2025, with a 12-month transition. The High Court, in R (FTDI Holding Ltd) v Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster [2025] EWHC 1922 (Admin), judgment 25 July 2025, declined to unwind an NSI divestment order; Davis Polk counted 12 ISU final orders in 2025. FCA enforcement penalties totaled GBP 186.4 million in 2024/25 and GBP 129.0 million in 2025/26. General counsel desks buy that work. They do not match the partner cell that prices it.
The structure race is the PEP story in another register. A&O Shearman combined on 1 May 2024. First combined-year PEP, year ended 30 April 2025, was GBP 2.0 million / USD 2.6 million; FY26 caught up to GBP 2.2 million / USD 2.9 million after what the firm called a deliberate reshaping, with 33 partner promotions and 24 strategic laterals. HSF Kramer went live on 1 June 2025; unaudited PEP for the year ended 30 April 2026 was GBP 1.5 million. Ashurst posted GBP 1.592 million for 2025-26 in its final full year before its planned combination with Perkins Coie. Freshfields introduced a nonequity partner tier, reported 19–20 February 2026, in a sequence that already included Cravath, Paul Weiss, Cleary, Debevoise and others. The firm is protecting the PEP denominator. It is not cutting partner economics to the IDR head-of-legal median.
Price the seat on the grid, not on the press average.
For the partner who earns the cell, the live questions are equity versus nonequity, capital lock-up and whether a US London seat pays a global number. For the general counsel who pays the invoice, the live question is whether the work belongs on the panel or on payroll.
Of 22 closed London partner searches over three years, 13 were private-capital, funds or disputes seats at US-headquartered London offices or Magic Circle LLPs. Five of those 13 ran past seven months because capital contribution and lock-up terms failed verification before the offer could be signed. That is our slowest London partner segment, and we now brief it first rather than last. Counter-offer incidence on the London partner line is 43 percent; the median offer-to-acceptance window is 18 working days; completion is 93 percent. The method is not slow because the city lacks partners. It is slow where the economics stop resembling a salary.
Sartori’s London mapping records title, employer and practice. It does not record drawings, tax or capital lock-up, and those are the three numbers that turn PEP into take-home. Every take-home figure we work with comes from the candidate, verified against the offer, not from the research file. Quarterly surveys have run since 2019; the global mapping behind the city cut is nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles. None of that file sees a US firm’s London-office draw, because the firms do not publish one.
Three composites, anonymized, from that book. A US-headquartered SRA-authorized LLP in the City instructed us on a private-capital partner seat in the first half of 2026. The work list was infrastructure M&A, take-privates and consortium deals for funds. The file closed in six months. A counter-offer arrived on day twelve of the 18-day median window; the candidate still moved. Capital contribution was documented before the offer letter, which is why this one did not join the slow group.
A Magic Circle nonequity partner weighing a US London equity seat looked, on paper, like a promotion. The capital call did not. Over five months the lock-up and contribution terms failed verification twice. The file is one of the five private-capital mandates that ran past seven months. We withdrew it rather than force a close.
A group general counsel at a listed corporate asked us, in 2025, what it would take to hire a City equity partner onto the group payroll as a deputy. We did not open a partner mandate. We put the IDR head-of-legal median next to Magic Circle PEP and sent the conversation back to the remuneration committee. They promoted internally. The company CTA at the bottom of this page is that conversation, not a request to match GBP 2.2 million on a payroll line.
If you are the partner reading the 2026 cell, ask equity status, the individual grid point, capital contribution, lock-up, and whether a US London seat is paid on a global number or a local one. If you are the general counsel funding the invoice, ask whether the work is a standing signature — failure-to-prevent, UKLR, NSI, CMA consumer exposure — or a PEP-priced mandate that belongs on the panel. The London PEP opacity map covers the diligence questions this table does not; the UK-wide partner salary page covers the national ranking this city page does not. The service view of the partner book is on lateral partner recruiting; the company-side hire sits on in-house and general counsel search.
Questions on the 2026 London partner figure
What is law firm partner salary London in 2026?
Three Magic Circle firms printed PEP for the year ended 30 April 2026: A&O Shearman GBP 2.2 million / USD 2.9 million, Clifford Chance GBP 2.3 million / USD 3.1 million, and Linklaters GBP 2.48 million against GBP 2.31 million profit per all partners. Macfarlanes printed GBP 3.1 million for 2025-26, flat on the prior year. Those cells are global, firm-wide profit allocations. They are not a London-office draw, not a PAYE salary, and not the cash a general counsel matches on a company payroll.
Is London PEP the same as partner take-home?
No. Clifford Chance states FY26 partnership profit of GBP 1.05 billion is calculated after nonequity pay, and equity LLP members are taxed on allocated profit, not drawings. Law.com International recorded, in September 2025 (financial year to about April 2025, the latest edition this page cites), an average UK top-50 top of equity of GBP 1.38 million against a bottom of GBP 291,000. HMRC treats an LLP member as a salaried member only if Conditions A, B and C in the Partnership Manual all hold. PEP is an average across that spread, after nonequity cost, before personal tax and capital lock-up.
What cash does a UK general counsel actually match against Magic Circle PEP?
Incomes Data Research put UK heads of legal near GBP 150,000 at the median in its 11 December 2025 survey, with some above GBP 200,000. That is employer-survey cash, not FTSE total compensation with LTIP. Government Legal Department Grade 6 London lawyers sat at GBP 81,000 at capability Level 3 from 1 April 2024, the latest bands this page found. A company that tries to put Magic Circle PEP on the group payroll is not matching a salary. It is inventing a category.
Do US firms in London pay their Am Law PEP figure?
No. Kirkland’s 2026 Am Law PEP of USD 11.121 million is a global average on 2025 results; London-office partner compensation is not in that table. Legal Business reported in June 2026 that Kirkland and Latham had each cleared USD 1 billion in UK revenue, with roughly 600 City lawyers apiece. Scale is public. The London draw is not. Converted global PEP is not a London partner salary.
How long does a London partner search take?
Sartori’s London partner desk works to a typical 4 to 7 months, with a median 18 working days from offer to acceptance across 22 closed searches in three years. Completion on that book is 93 percent. The slow files are not the ones that lack candidates. They are the ones where capital contribution and lock-up terms fail verification before anyone can sign.
Should a company hire a City equity partner onto the payroll to save PEP-level fees?
Not at Magic Circle PEP. A payroll line matching GBP 2.2 million would be a multiple of the IDR head-of-legal median, which is why general counsel desks buy the work instead. The instructing client on a Takeover Panel firm offer is a corporate or sponsor GC, not a second PEP. Hire in-house for the signature and the standing advice; keep PEP-priced work on the panel.
Firm results, ranking packages and the statutory overlay.
PEP cells come from firm releases and from the Law Gazette live 2026 collation, with FY25 cells kept only where no later print was found. Dilution cells come from the Law.com International UK top-50 package (September 2025). In-house cash comes from Incomes Data Research and from employer or FOI documents. US PEP is Am Law global, labeled as such.

PEP is firm-wide profit per equity partner for the year in the cell, not a London-office draw and not take-home. USD is firm-published only; this page converts no currency. HSF Kramer FY26 mixes two legacy year-ends. Freshfields FY25 is an LLP profit pool, not PEP. Slaughter and May is a ranking estimate. In-house medians are employer-survey cash, not FTSE total compensation.
Our own numbers — the London interview cohort, the 22 closed partner searches, the 43 percent counter-offer incidence and the 18-day offer-to-acceptance window — come from the continuous research program on our research page. Google Ads Keyword Planner, four-country, 11 September 2026, recorded 50 monthly searches for the string this page is built on.

The opacity problem: why published PEP is a ratio, not a paycheck, and what a hiring committee should diligence instead of the headline.
