01 Market demand

Demand for legal project management outruns the people who have done it.

Legal project management is the discipline of planning, budgeting and tracking legal work the way a delivery function would. Law firms built it to win and price client work. Legal departments now hire it to run intake, implementations and outside-counsel spend.

The pressure is documented. CLOC's 2025 State of the Industry found that 83% of legal departments expect rising demand, and that workload and bandwidth are the top challenge for 63%. The same survey found program and project management inside the legal-operations remit of 84% of departments, and a median legal-operations function of five people. A function that small does not carry a spare project manager. When the seat is vacant, implementations slip and matter budgets go untracked.

The budget valves point the same way. CLOC's 2026 report, from the Harbor survey of 135 departments, found 37% expecting higher outside-counsel spend, down from 58%, and 47% expecting higher inside legal spend, down from 65%. Budgets are flat while volume rises, so the department needs people who can plan and price work. Thomson Reuters Institute's July 2025 index found 81% of U.S. departments reporting rising matter volumes and 56% calling themselves under-resourced.

Firms compete for the same people. The pricing and client-delivery seats that Clifford Chance, Venable and Freshfields advertised in 2026 sit in the same pool as in-house legal project leads. Candidates with several years of delivery experience are rarely advertised and rarely unemployed. We map them and approach them in confidence. Read the legal project manager brief for what the seat is allowed to own between lawyers and technology.

02 Roles we recruit

Legal project managers, pricing roles and the leaders who run them.

Six seats across law firms and corporate legal departments. The title changes by employer. The work is planning, pricing and delivery.

01

Legal Project Manager

Runs workstreams, resourcing, status and budgets on complex matters and deals. The seat a practice group calls when a file has too many moving parts for the partner to track.

02

Pricing Manager / Director of Pricing

Builds fee proposals, alternative-fee structures and matter budgets, then tracks realization against them. Sits beside finance and the practice leaders.

03

Legal Project / Program Lead, In-House

Owns intake, workflow and technology rollouts inside a legal department, reporting to the general counsel or to a head of legal operations.

04

Client Delivery / Legal Project Office Head

Leads the team of project managers and pricing analysts that a law firm runs as a client-facing function. Sets methodology, staffing and standards.

05

Legal Operations Project Manager

A hybrid seat at product companies: matter management, e-billing, contracts and AI enablement under one owner, with a delivery plan for each.

06

Matter Budget & Financial Analyst

Forecasts, variances and work-in-progress reporting for matters. The entry point into pricing and the bench a Pricing Director is promoted from.

Legal project management is one competency inside the wider legal-operations function. If the open seat is the head of the function or a technology lead, that is a legal operations recruiting brief. For technology seats, see legal technology recruiting. Talk it through with a consultant →

03 Compensation

What legal project managers and pricing professionals are paid.

New York pay transparency makes firm-side cash public. Corporate pay is best read from the ACC ladder. All figures are base or target cash, not equity.

New York's pay-transparency law, Labor Law §194-b, has required a good-faith range on postings since 17 September 2023. In 2026, Clifford Chance US posted $130,000 to $170,000 for a New York corporate legal project management seat. Venable posted $150,000 to $175,000 for a finance-heavy seat covering budgets, forecasts, work in progress and realization. Freshfields US posted $125,000 to $150,000 for New York and California. Each asks for several years of legal project management, legal finance or pricing experience.

For corporate departments, the ACC / Empsight 2025 Law Department Compensation Survey (1,632 respondents; pay effective 1 March 2025) gives the ladder: Analyst, Legal Operations $88,000, Manager $168,000 and Director $220,000 median total target cash. A department that prices a seat at analyst pay and asks for director ownership does not close the search. Match the band to the ownership.

Background moves the number. Brightflag's 2025 compensation report found professionals from a paralegal or administrative background paid 35% less than those from other backgrounds, and non-head staff under five years of experience at a $84,000 median total compensation. Pricing roles that carry realization and budget authority sit toward the top of the firm bands. Full ladders are in the legal operations salary guide.

04 Candidate background

Where legal project managers and pricing professionals come from.

There is no single route in. The right profile depends on whether the gap is process, money or tools.

A

Paralegals and matter-management staff

Know how matters run and where they stall. Strong on process, often lighter on finance. The group Brightflag found paid 35% less, which makes the band worth checking before an offer.

B

Lawyers who moved into pricing or delivery

Former associates who understand scope and fee risk. CLOC's 2025 survey found 25% of legal-operations leaders hold a JD or LLB. Useful where partners need to be persuaded.

C

Consultants and certified project managers

PMP, PRINCE2, Lean Six Sigma or IILPM-credentialed delivery leads. CLOC found 9% of operations leaders hold a project-management certification. Employer postings list these as desirable, not essential.

D

Finance and FP&A professionals

Forecasts, variances and realization. The natural background for a Pricing Manager. CLOC found 19% of operations leaders hold an MBA.

Credential mix: Harbor / CLOC 2025 State of the Industry, February 2025, legal-operations leaders: bachelor's 43%, JD or LLB 25%, MBA 19%, project-management certification 9%. Career routes: legal operations career path.

05 Search timeline

From brief to accepted offer.

Sartori publishes a clock for legal operations. Project-management and pricing searches are not reported as a separate line, so the legal-operations clock is the nearest published benchmark.

Sartori case study, September 2026

The search runs in five steps. The mandate blueprint is written in week 1: the seat's perimeter, the band and the reporting line. Total-market mapping runs in weeks 1 and 2, private outreach in weeks 2 to 4, and the shortlist with assessment dossiers lands in weeks 3 to 4. Interviews and offer engineering run through week 9, followed by closing, notice and onboarding. A listed software group in Austin hired its first head of legal operations on this path: shortlist in 21 days, accepted offer in week 9. Read the Austin case study.

Retained only. The fee is 25-30% of total first-year compensation, with 30% of the fee paid as a retainer at engagement. The replacement window is 6 months, and off-limits on the client's legal department run 24 months. Across corporate mandates, offer acceptance is 96%, and 97% of placed in-house leaders remain at 12 months and 91% at 24 months.

06 How we assess

Write the perimeter before the cash.

A brief that mixes practicing law, project delivery and ownership of the AI stack on one salary is the brief that stalls.

A

Name the box

Process, money or tools. Pick the competency the seat owns and write it on the requisition. A project manager runs workstreams and budgets. A pricing manager owns proposals and realization. Neither gives legal advice.

B

Match the band

Manager cash for manager ownership. The ACC ladder shows the gap between Analyst at $88,000 and Director at $220,000 median total target cash. Re-level the brief before posting.

C

Verify what was delivered

A rollout that finished on budget. A pricing model that partners used. A matter-budget process with measured variance. We trace each claim to a result and a reference.

D

Test influence without authority

Project managers ask busy lawyers to follow a plan. We probe how a candidate has done that with senior partners or a skeptical legal team, and what changed afterward.

Read our data-led legal recruitment methodology. Sartori maps 1,480,000+ lawyers and has run a quarterly market survey since 2019; the instruments are described on the research programme page. Firm background is on about the firm, founded in early 2017.

Legal project management recruiting — common questions

What does a legal project manager recruiter do?

A legal project manager recruiter runs a retained search for the people who plan, price and track legal work: legal project managers, pricing managers and directors, legal-project leads inside corporate legal departments, and client-delivery heads. The work is mapping the candidates who have done the job at a comparable firm or department, approaching them in confidence, and assessing what they actually owned. Retained only. The fee is 25-30% of total first-year compensation, with 30% of the fee paid as a retainer at engagement.

What does a legal project manager earn in 2026?

Employer postings in New York for 2026 show base pay of $125,000 to $175,000 at international law firms, with the range set by the extent of pricing and finance ownership. For corporate departments, the ACC / Empsight 2025 survey (pay effective 1 March 2025) puts the median Manager, Legal Operations at $168,000 total target cash and the Director at $220,000. See the legal operations salary guide and the legal project manager pay and perimeter brief for the detail.

Does a legal project manager need a law degree?

No. CLOC's 2025 survey of legal-operations leaders found 43% hold a bachelor's degree as their highest credential, 25% a JD or LLB, 19% an MBA and 9% a project-management certification. Employer postings list IILPM, PRINCE2 or Lean Six Sigma as desirable, not required. Some pricing seats prefer a JD or an MBA. We set the requirement from the work the seat owns, not from a default résumé.

How long does a legal project management search take?

Sartori reports a clock for legal operations, the closest published file family: across 12 legal-operations placements since 2017, the median shortlist is 20 days and the median accepted offer is 9 weeks. A listed software group in Austin hired its first head of legal operations with a shortlist in 21 days and an accepted offer in week 9. Project-management and pricing searches are not reported as a separate line. Expect longer when the brief asks for a JD, a credential and ownership of the technology stack on one salary. See the Austin case study.

What is the difference between a legal project manager and legal operations?

Legal project management is one competency inside legal operations. CLOC's Core 12 lists project and program management next to technology, financial management and other areas. A legal project manager owns the plan, budget and status of matters or implementations; legal operations is the wider function. For the wider function, see legal operations recruiting.

Do you recruit for law firms as well as for companies?

Yes. Law-firm operations heads, pricing directors and client-delivery leaders hire these roles in the firm, and general counsel hire them on the corporate side. The search method is the same: retained, confidential, mapped across the whole market. Firms can brief a search through our law-firm desk, and companies through our company desk.

Do you also represent legal project managers who want to move?

Yes, by separate engagement. The hiring organization pays the fee, so the candidates we represent pay nothing, and we never share a profile without written consent. See our page for legal-operations professionals exploring roles.
