Legal Recruiters Charlotte for Unfilled In-House Seats
The Charlotte chair that stays empty is a company seat — a general counsel, chief legal officer or head of legal — that the metro wage table has not filled. We run the retained search that covers it.
The Charlotte chair that is still empty is a company payroll line.
Companies that search for legal recruiters Charlotte usually call after a wage table has failed to produce a general counsel. Bank of America's Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2025, filed February 25, 2026, puts principal executive offices in Charlotte and approximately 213,000 employees, 77 percent of them in the United States. Sartori's Charlotte interview cohort (250 structured interviews) shows the uncovered seat on a company payroll.
The seat is a general counsel, a chief legal officer, a head of legal, or a nested counsel desk inside a bank or a utility. It is not the May 2025 lawyer median, and it is not a first-year associate on a firm scale. A company comparing those three instruments will brief the wrong search.
Sartori has covered Charlotte companies and Charlotte firms for 5 years. On the in-house line, mandate telemetry shows 15 closed searches across the trailing three years. Completion on those files is 94 percent. The usual path from mandate to start runs 4 to 7 months. Associate and partner work is a separate retained product.
Firm-wide, 52 general counsel and chief legal officer searches since 2017 reach a shortlist in 24 days and an accepted offer in a median of 11 weeks, range 8 to 16. A Charlotte file the board has not yet named is on the city window, not behind that median.
The employer is a headquarters legal department, not a law-firm intake form.
Charlotte's hiring signal is a bank, a utility and a retailer on a company payroll. The legal occupational group is a thin slice of local jobs.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics, in Southeast release 26-1034-ATL on July 8, 2026, reported May 2025 wages for the Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia, NC-SC metropolitan area. The legal occupational group paid a mean of $63.35 an hour, against $67.07 nationally, and accounted for 0.7 percent of local employment against 0.8 percent in the United States. Business and financial operations held 116,030 jobs, 8.5 percent of local employment against 6.8 percent nationally, at a local mean of $47.90 an hour against $45.78. Credit analysts were employed at 3.90 times the national rate. Financial examiners were at 2.82 times.
That legal-group mean is not the lawyer median. O*NET's republish of Bureau of Labor Statistics 2025 wage data, on a page updated October 6, 2026, lists lawyers (SOC 23-1011) in Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia at an annual median of $157,180, a 10th percentile of $61,830 and a 90th of $371,170. The same row's hourly median is $75.57. The United States lawyer median on that table is $159,670. North Carolina's statewide median is $127,710. A Charlotte offer priced off the statewide cell is using a different market.
The North Carolina State Bar's 2025 Annual Report says the Bar currently regulates over 34,000 licensed lawyers. The financial-report caption on the same document reads “0% Dues Increase Since 2010—33,900 Active Lawyers.” Those are statewide license counts. They are not a count of lawyers employed in Charlotte, and they are not the 0.7 percent legal-group share, which is wage-and-salary employment in a bi-state metropolitan area. The July 8, 2026 release defines that area as eight North Carolina counties and three South Carolina counties, including Mecklenburg. It is not a Mecklenburg-only wage.
Headquarters make the buyer concrete, and none of the filings publishes a legal-department headcount. Bank of America, in the Form 10-K cited above, employed approximately 213,000 people at both December 31, 2025 and December 31, 2024, of which 77 percent were in the United States at year-end 2025. Truist Financial Corporation's Item 1 states that it is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, and that Truist Bank, chartered in 1872, is the oldest bank headquartered in North Carolina, with 1,927 branches as of December 31, 2025. Duke Energy's Form 10-K for the same year, filed February 26, 2026, describes an energy company headquartered in Charlotte that provides retail electric service to approximately 8.7 million customers across six states.
A company comparing legal recruitment Charlotte with a careers-page posting is comparing a confidential payroll line with a public advertisement. The posting can be read by the sitting counsel. The retained search is written so that it is not. Firm offices in the city instruct those departments later. They do not sign the general counsel offer. Company buyers who want the standing team start at in-house and general counsel recruiting and at banking general counsel search.
The successor stays off the careers page until the Tuesday staff meeting is told.
Banking density is not coverage of an authorized company chair.
A metro can employ 116,030 people in business and financial operations and still fail to produce one general counsel the board will put on the payroll.
Sartori maps roughly 4,000 lawyers in Charlotte. That figure is coverage: who can be reached in the metro. It is not a census, and it is not the State Bar's statewide license count.
Of 94 respondents who sat in corporate legal departments inside that interview cohort, over a 24-month window, 38 sat at a bank, utility or retail headquarters. Of those 38, over the same 24 months, 22 said they could not name a successor while the sitting general counsel remained. The salary note on this market already records that 71 of those 94 price a Counsel seat against a national in-house survey rather than against the North Carolina wage cell. The 22 are a narrower cut: the file that cannot be posted.
Of 15 closed Charlotte in-house searches over three years, 10 were standing general counsel, chief legal officer or head of legal chairs and 5 were nested desks inside a group function. 4 of those 15 ran past month 7, almost all of them sitting-counsel successions the board would not yet name. That is the number that does not flatter the method. We cannot outrun a company that has not told its own general counsel.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics Economy at a Glance table for this metropolitan area, data extracted October 2, 2026, puts Financial Activities employment at 128,700 jobs in August 2026 (preliminary; the series is published as 128.7 thousand), up 1.1 percent from a year earlier. The unemployment rate that month was 3.7 percent, preliminary. The empty chair is not a metro that has stopped hiring. It is a headquarters that has not authorized the sentence.
A head of legal at a listed electric utility told us, Candidates open with the first-year scale even when the seat is a company Counsel role. Court work is a different gate again. A lawyer who will appear in the Western District of North Carolina or in the North Carolina Business Court needs a North Carolina license or admission pro hac vice. The $157,180 median does not test that credential.
What legal recruiters Charlotte actually run for the company.
Four products, one geography. The telemetry figures on this page are the Charlotte in-house line. Firm-side associate and partner work is retained search, quoted as a different product.
General counsel, CLO and head of legal
Standing company chairs: first general counsel, successor while the incumbent remains, chief legal officer, and head of legal at a bank, utility, retailer or industrial headquarters. This is the uncovered seat the page opens on.
Nested counsel desks
Inside a bank or group function: regulatory, consumer, litigation, or technology counsel who report to a deputy general counsel. The posting title says Counsel. The reporting line does not match a firm associate seat.
Associate seats for Charlotte firms
When a Charlotte office buys a retained associate search — mid-level banking, corporate, disputes, energy — we run it as a firm mandate. That book is the associate line, quoted separately from the in-house files on this page.
Partner seats for Charlotte firms
Retained partner search for firms with a Charlotte office. The buyer is the firm. Company general-counsel economics do not set the partner guarantee.
The associate line must not be added to the 15. Counsel and senior-associate-grade seats at companies sit on that associate line, which closed 20 searches over the same three years, 93 percent complete, on a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks. Counter-offers arrived on 39 percent of those files. Median offer-to-acceptance was 12 working days. A reader who opens the North Carolina salary note will see the same associate-line figures. They are not a second version of the in-house line.
A composite from the in-house telemetry: a regional bank in Charlotte needed a first general counsel after the board stopped routing regulatory questions through outside counsel. The first shortlist was rejected because the brief still described a banking associate. We rewrote it as a company chair with examination and consumer exposure. The accepted offer landed in week 14. The lawyer started in month 5, inside the 4 to 7 months window, from another in-house regulatory counsel, not from a first-year associate.
A second composite: a listed electric utility needed a successor head of legal while the sitting counsel remained. The company would not name the search for one quarter. Charlotte in-house mandate telemetry records counter-offers on 26 percent of files. This file took a counter-offer and still signed inside the 14-working-day median. It closed in month 6. Confidential successor work is slow until the board will say the sentence.
When the gap is a defined program rather than a standing chair — a rate case, parental leave, a spin-off close — the faster product is interim and fractional counsel, not that permanent window. Firm-wide, those interim starts have a median of 7 days across 60+ engagements. Company buyers who want the standing team can also read our work for companies.
Retained, exclusive, written down before the first call.
Companies engage us on a retained basis for Charlotte mandates. We agree scope and terms in writing before any approach is made.
- 01
Mandate blueprint
We write the chair before we name a person: reporting line, license exposure, outside-counsel panel, and whether the sitting general counsel will be told. A Charlotte brief that still reads as a firm-side partner is rewritten as a company seat.
- 02
Market map
We map the relevant in-house bench — bank legal departments, the listed utility, retail and industrial headquarters — then the firm-side supply that might move in. No posting. No job-board scrape.
- 03
Blind outreach
Approaches go to sitting counsel who are not looking. The company is not named until both sides have agreed a qualified conversation. Exclusivity is the process, not an optional extra.
- 04
Credential and conflicts screen
We test whether the seat needs a North Carolina license or pro hac vice for the Western District of North Carolina or the North Carolina Business Court, and whether the lawyer's current panel creates a conflict. That screen lands before the shortlist, not after the offer.
- 05
Offer engineering
We set cash against the published poles that actually move Charlotte candidates — the May 2025 lawyer median and the January 1, 2025 first-year scale — then hold the 14-working-day offer-to-acceptance window. Counter-offers are expected: Charlotte in-house mandate telemetry records them on 26 percent of files.
- 06
Close and ramp
Notice, start date and the first 90 days are part of the mandate. A placement counts when the general counsel is in the chair, not when the term sheet is signed.
Completion on the Charlotte in-house line is 94 percent. Typical time from mandate to start is 4 to 7 months. Median offer-to-acceptance is 14 working days. Sartori's research program maps 1,480,000+ lawyers. The full method — mandate blueprint, market mapping, blind outreach, vetting, offer engineering, close — is on our methodology.
In four quarterly survey waves since 2025, 17 of 44 Charlotte in-house hiring-manager responses arrived with a firm-side title on a company chair. We send those briefs back. A search that starts as “partner-equivalent” will not produce a general counsel the chief executive will appoint.
Candidates who type legal headhunters Charlotte are usually comparing that confidential company search with a firm associate process. The associate process is real. It is not the chair this page opens on. The company pays 25 to 30 percent of first-year total compensation, and 30 percent of that fee is the retainer. Since 2017 the firm has completed 400+ placements (230+ in-house), with 96 percent offer acceptance on corporate mandates.
Charlotte's 2026 calendar is a wage release and three headquarters filings.
Demand for the Charlotte in-house chair is being read off dated instruments. A first-year scale is not the hiring signal.
O*NET's North Carolina wage page, updated October 6, 2026, republishes Bureau of Labor Statistics 2025 wage data. The Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia lawyer median of $157,180 sits within $2,490 of the United States lawyer median of $159,670 on the same table, and $29,470 above the North Carolina median of $127,710. The legal occupational group's mean hourly wage, $63.35 in the July 8, 2026 release, is a different occupation cut from the $157,180 lawyer median. One figure does not convert into the other, and neither is a general counsel band.
NALP's May 28, 2025 release kept the January 1, 2025 first-year medians at $200,000 overall and $215,000 in firms of more than 700 lawyers, flat versus the 2023 figures NALP cited in that release. Charlotte is not one of the six cities at a $225,000 median. A company that treats $225,000 as the Charlotte rate is matching a city that is not on that list. The 2026 national lockstep above that survey is on our BigLaw associate salary scale for 2026.
None of those three 2025 Forms 10-K states a legal-department headcount. The August 2026 preliminary Financial Activities series, 128,700 jobs, says the payroll around the headquarters was still growing. It does not say the general counsel chair was filled. The State Bar counts, over 34,000 licensed and 33,900 active, describe a statewide profession. They do not staff one company chair.
The rest of the Charlotte brief lives on pages we already wrote.

Charlotte legal search — questions companies actually ask
What do legal recruiters Charlotte run when the general counsel chair is confidential?
One retained mandate: 15 Charlotte in-house searches closed in three years, 94 percent complete. The usual path from mandate to start is 4 to 7 months. Firm-wide, across 52 general counsel and chief legal officer searches since 2017, the shortlist lands in 24 days and the accepted offer in a median of 11 weeks (range 8 to 16). See how a retained legal search runs.
Who hires the uncovered Charlotte in-house seat?
A company officer hires it: Bank of America's 2025 Form 10-K records approximately 213,000 employees, with principal executive offices in Charlotte. Truist Financial Corporation's Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2025, filed February 24, 2026, states that it is headquartered in Charlotte. Duke Energy's Form 10-K, filed February 26, 2026, describes an energy company headquartered in Charlotte serving approximately 8.7 million retail electric customers. Law firms buy associate and partner searches as a second buyer.
How long does a Charlotte general counsel search take?
Typically 4 to 7 months from mandate to start on the Charlotte in-house line, with a median 14 working days from offer to acceptance. Firm-wide, 52 general counsel and chief legal officer searches since 2017 reached an accepted offer in a median of 11 weeks, range 8 to 16. 4 of the 15 closed Charlotte files ran past month 7. Sartori has covered this market for 5 years.
What does a Charlotte in-house chair actually pay?
The Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia lawyer median is $157,180 in the May 2025 OEWS table. O*NET republished that Bureau of Labor Statistics 2025 wage cell; the page was updated October 6, 2026. It is a wage-and-salary median, not a general counsel band. NALP, on May 28, 2025, put the national first-year associate base median at $200,000 as of January 1, 2025, and at $215,000 in firms of more than 700 lawyers. Charlotte is not among the six cities where that first-year median had reached $225,000. The metro cut sits on lawyer salary in North Carolina.
Do you recruit Charlotte associates and partners as well as in-house counsel?
Yes, the 15 files quoted here are Charlotte in-house searches, not the associate line. That associate line closed 20 searches over three years, 93 percent complete, on a typical 6 to 12 weeks, with counter-offers on 39 percent of files and a median 12 working days from offer to acceptance. Company buyers start at in-house counsel recruiting. Firm buyers use associate recruiting and partner recruiting.
How are you paid for a Charlotte search?
The hiring company pays a retained fee of 25 to 30 percent of first-year total compensation. Thirty percent of that fee is the retainer at engagement. There is no contingency option. Retained general counsel, chief legal officer and chief compliance officer searches carry a 12-month replacement term; other searches carry 6 months. Offer acceptance on corporate mandates is 96 percent.
Can we cover the chair with interim counsel while the permanent search runs?
Yes, a defined gap is often faster as interim counsel than a permanent hire on a 4 to 7 months window. Firm-wide, interim starts have a median of 7 days across 60+ engagements. The permanent chair on this page is still the retained search. See interim and fractional counsel.

Charlotte in-house search
If the chair is still empty, brief it as a company seat.
A general counsel, chief legal officer or head of legal search in Charlotte is a retained mandate. We listen first — to the reporting line, the license, and whether the sitting counsel has been told. No obligation.
