Legal Market Zurich 2026: Firms, Pay and Hiring Demand

Zurich sits on a measured capital stock London would recognize and a public-markets tape London would not. The general counsel who pays the 2026 figure, and the lawyer who earns it, are looking at the same inversion: Swiss independents still own the deals, Magic Circle lockstep is not the Zurich pay tape, and the empty seats are the ones whose statutes have not yet started.

01 The 2026 tape

Put Zurich next to London and Frankfurt. The inversion is the tape, not the skyline.

The 2026 legal market Zurich recorded three public takeover offers totaling about CHF 1.35 billion, the Swiss Takeover Board reported on 21 May 2026 — a year London would not recognize as a public-M&A calendar.

02 Who is hiring

The buyer is a company with a Zurich payroll. The panel is a Swiss independent.

Group Legal at the banks, insurers and reinsurers is the 2026 in-house demand. The firms those general counsel still buy from are the independents that occupy Legal 500 2026 Tier 1.

Start with the company, because that is who writes the figure on the offer. A Zurich-headquartered global wealth manager posted, on 5 September 2026, a three-month 2027 internship inside Group Legal in Zurich: banking regulation, financial services, commercial contracts, technology and governance; a Swiss law degree; English and German; GPA 4.5 on the Swiss scale; no Anwaltspatent on the face of the ad. A global reinsurer advertised Legal Counsel — Global Transactions and Legal Governance, hybrid 80–100 percent, Zurich: fully qualified in the United Kingdom or Switzerland preferred, minimum five years’ PQE. A multi-line insurer posted a newly created trade-sanctions counsel seat at its Quai Zurich campus: Master’s in an EU, UK or US jurisdiction, bar admission a plus, 2–4+ years, English essential, Swiss patent not listed as required. Those three employer pages, all in 2026, are the in-house market a chief legal officer is actually staffing.

FINMA is the public buyer the same tape created. The staff chapter of the FINMA Annual Report 2025 records a permanent headcount limit raised by 121.1 FTEs at the start of 2025 to 734.7, an average of 698 FTEs against 634 in 2024, posts approved as part of the measures following the Credit Suisse crisis, and turnover of 6.8 percent — inside a 6–10 percent target the authority says it keeps intentionally higher than the Federal Administration to pull in financial-sector knowledge. Live jurist titles on the FINMA career center include an experienced investigations lawyer for unauthorized activities, Bern or Zurich, 80–100 percent. The 2025 banking-supervision focus, the same report says, was the technical and operational integration of Credit Suisse into UBS: 113 bank on-site inspections and 43 insurance on-sites. Seniority is experienced. Newly qualified is the wrong requisition.

The cantonal universal bank exists as an employer hub; the extracted 2026 jobs page did not print a legal-counsel title, so this page does not invent one. The cantonal prosecutor is a different desk: about 43,000 incoming cases a year on the Staatsanwaltschaft careers page, with Swiss citizenship on the Assistenz-Staatsanwalt profile. That is a public criminal-law pipeline, not a commercial Group Legal seat, and it is not priced off London lockstep.

Firm-side demand is the panel those companies still buy. Legal 500 2026 Commercial, Corporate and M&A puts Bär & Karrer, Homburger, Lenz & Staehelin, Niederer Kraft Frey and Walder Wyss in Tier 1. Tier 2 includes Baker McKenzie Switzerland, MLL Legal, Pestalozzi and Schellenberg Wittmer. Magic Circle names that set the London and Frankfurt pay tape do not occupy that Tier 1 list. Baker McKenzie Switzerland is the large global-firm exception: more than 130 lawyers, Geneva and Zurich, more than half a century in the country, still a band below the independents on this ranking. Schellenberg’s 2026 vacancies board named a Zurich employment lawyer at 80–100 percent and parked several banking and M&A associate seats in Geneva. The empty international-firm associate lockstep in Zurich is structural. It is not a 2026 hiring freeze.

  2. Supervisor and prosecutor FINMA jurists on the CS file; cantonal prosecutor behind a citizenship gate. Public desks with a 2026 headcount story. Not a private lockstep.
  3. Swiss independent Tier 1 Corporate/M&A still sits here. Private M&A, banking, investigations, arbitration. The company buys this panel. It does not staff a Magic Circle Zurich office that is not on the map.
Table 2 — Legal 500 2026 Commercial, Corporate and M&A, with firm-stated lawyer counts. Sortable. Counts are national multi-office figures as the firms or Chambers 2026 profiles publish them, not a Zurich-only headcount.

Schellenberg Wittmer Tier 2 Not used as a census Zurich, Geneva, Singapore Zurich employment lawyer on the 2026 board; banking/M&A associate ads in Geneva

Lenz & Staehelin’s Chambers Global 2026 profile (firm-provided) adds a 70-lawyer corporate and M&A team and a roughly 50-lawyer litigation, arbitration and investigations team across Geneva, Lausanne and Zurich. Homburger is a single-city Swiss independent. Walder Wyss, at 300 lawyers and 83 partners, is the largest of the independents by the count it gave Chambers. None of those numbers is a Zurich-only census.

Zurich prints the capital stock. London and Frankfurt print the associate lockstep.

03 What pay is public

What the legal market Zurich publishes on pay

A company that asks what a Zurich lawyer earns in 2026 is asking a question the commercial firms have declined to answer in francs. The dated answers sit on a public grid, an all-job survey, and two foreign entry bases.

Lenz & Staehelin’s associate careers page, accessed 11 September 2026, promises “market leading pay” and lists Zurich Corporate and M&A, Banking and Finance, and competition and regulated-markets seats. It does not print a franc figure. No other Zurich independent in the research set published a lockstep either. Guessed junior bands circulating on career blogs are omitted here because they are not a primary document. The lawyer who earns the figure cannot read one. The general counsel who pays it cannot benchmark one.

What a public Zurich employer will print is the 2026 Lohnsystem: 29 classes, Grundlohn including the 13th month. Class 21 runs from CHF 112,382 (Anlaufstufe 2) to CHF 175,068 (Lohnstufe 29); at Lohnstufe 21 the annual figure is CHF 160,679. Class 23 runs from CHF 128,067 to CHF 201,049; Lohnstufe 21 is CHF 184,527. The Funktionscodeverzeichnis names prosecutors; it does not print the class for those codes, so this page does not assign them. Class 23 is the highest class a direction can set without Regierungsrat or the highest cantonal courts. It is a public-sector scale. The City of Zurich Funktionsstufe grid, the wage ceiling still in force, and the seat count per million francs are on the Zurich in-house salary page.

The Federal Statistical Office’s Lohnstrukturerhebung 2024, regional tables carried on the Grossregionen page with a 29 April 2026 cube release, gives a Zurich-region standardized monthly gross median of CHF 7,502 against CHF 7,024 for Switzerland. Upper and middle management in the Zurich region: CHF 12,378. Lower management: CHF 10,405. No management function: CHF 6,507. The 25 November 2025 first-results release, as summarized on that regional page, states that the 10 percent best-paid in the Zurich region earned more than CHF 13,970 a month. Those are all-occupation medians. They are not a lawyer salary Zurich, and converting them into one is a fabrication this page will not make.

The contrast the opening angle assigned is the one the German and London press did print. The Lawyer, on 29 May 2024, reported Clifford Chance’s newly qualified base rising by GBP 25,000 to GBP 150,000, matching Freshfields and Linklaters. Azur, on 28 November 2024, converted that London Magic Circle entry base to about EUR 175,500 and stated that German Magic Circle offices had stayed near an average EUR 150,000. LTO’s Hengeler Mueller employer profile states first-year pay of EUR 150,000. Azur’s Top-Arbeitgeber table, accessed 11 September 2026, lists Freshfields Germany at EUR 155,000, Linklaters Germany at EUR 150,000, Clifford Chance Germany at EUR 155,000, Latham & Watkins at EUR 160,000, Kirkland & Ellis at EUR 178,000 and Milbank at EUR 180,000. Those are Germany-wide entry bases those publishers attribute to the firms. They are not Zurich wages. They are the tape a Zurich candidate will put on the table anyway, and the tape a Zurich general counsel has to answer.

04 Empty Swiss seats

The empty seats are the ones whose clock has not started.

Private M&A ran. Public offers did not. English state-court competence is federal; the Zurich chamber is not open. FDI has a statute and no filings.

Three public offers is not a London takeover calendar. The Swiss Takeover Board’s Tätigkeitsbericht 2025, dated 21 May 2026 in Zurich, records 3 public offers against 6 in 2024 and 6 in 2023; one mandatory and two voluntary; all cash; none hostile; aggregate offer value about CHF 1.35 billion. Share-buyback programs: 19 against 13 in 2024. That is the measured empty public-markets seat. It is not a theory about deal flow. Chambers, last updated 21 April 2026, puts Swiss-involved M&A at 502 transactions and USD 166.8 billion of value, up from 464 and USD 115.1 billion. Bär & Karrer’s 2026 M&A outlook cites more than USD 163 billion of 2025 involvement, the highest since 2018, and a 14 percent franc appreciation against the dollar. The private-deal seat at the independents is full. The listed-offer lawyer is not.

WEKO treated 34 concentrations in 2025, the 31 March 2026 release states, against 43 notifications in 2024; 18 investigations; 8 preliminary inquiries; 43 market observations; about 350 consultation opinions. Chambers adds that 33 of 34 were Phase I unconditional. The one Phase II, Hotelplan/DERTOUR, was cleared on 26 August 2025. Merger-control volume at Swiss thresholds is not a Frankfurt factory. The empty seat is the standing Phase II team, not the private M&A associate.

English commercial-court competence has been federal since 1 January 2025: Pestalozzi, on 1 April 2026, sets out Art. 6(4)(c) of the Civil Procedure Code (commercial disputes of at least CHF 100,000 where the parties agree and at least one party is seated abroad) and Art. 129(2)(b) (those proceedings may run in English). The Zurich chamber is still a bill. The Regierungsrat, on 17 July 2025, sent the GOG amendment creating a “Zurich International Commercial Court” to the Kantonsrat, to sit inside the existing Handelsgericht, with “Personelle Aufstockungen wären vorderhand nicht notwendig” and expected initial case numbers in the lower single digits. Kantonsrat business KR 6034 remained pending; the KJS voted 10–5 on 25 June 2026 to recommend it. Pestalozzi expected Bern to launch in May 2026 and Zurich to follow in 2027. Bern, not Zurich, is the first Swiss English state court in 2026. There is no 2026 Zurich English-docket hire. Firm-side work now is the English forum clause. Neighbouring cantons get a one-line contrast; their mechanism is not this page.

The Investment Screening Act was adopted on 19 December 2025. SECO, accessed 11 September 2026, says it is currently expected to enter into force in 2027 and that no applications can currently be submitted or reviewed. The Federal Council opened the ordinance consultation on 12 June 2026; it closes 5 October 2026. London’s NSI Act and Frankfurt’s AWV already take filings. Zurich’s equivalent filing-desk associate stays empty until the start date. 2026 work is partner-level ordinance advice. The Federal Patent Court, in the 17 March 2026 joint federal-court release, took 14 incoming cases against 20 in 2024. That is a measured shrinking federal IP-litigation tape, not a hiring census, and it is the other empty specialist docket this year.

05 Live desks

The desks that are hiring are the ones the 2025 statutes already filled.

Insolvency, sanctions, FINMA investigations and arbitration are 2026 volume. Capital markets is episodic. Private-bank legal headcount does not rise with AUM.

Bankruptcy openings rose because the statute changed, not because Zurich went into recession. The Federal Council / Federal Office of Justice notice of 14 November 2024 repealed SchKG Art. 43 nos. 1 and 1bis from 1 January 2025: public-law debts against commercial-register debtors now continue as bankruptcy. BFS, on 21 May 2026, recorded 12,485 corporate openings in 2025, up 61.2 percent from 7,743, and 13,612 SchKG openings in total. The office attributes most of the corporate spike to that legal change and expects later years to rebalance. Zurich’s 2024 Rechenschaftsbericht, released 23 May 2025, already had bankruptcy offices in the canton recording more than 3,000 openings (+15 percent). Handelsgericht collegial incoming fell from 265 to 220; single-judge incoming rose from 163 to 219. That is insolvency and commercial-court volume a Zurich independent can staff in 2026. It is not a partner-only capital-markets seat.

The Swiss National Bank cut the policy rate to 0 percent from 20 June 2025 and, on 18 June 2026, left it there, with 2026 growth around 1 percent. KPMG Switzerland and the University of St. Gallen, on 24 June 2026, put private-bank AUM at a record CHF 3.5 trillion and the institution count at 85 to 80 in 2025 and 79 by end-May 2026; median cost-income 75.6 percent to 78.2 percent. AUM is not a hiring requisition. The number of general-counsel desks at private banks shrank while assets rose. Surviving banks still buy FIDLEG, AML and cross-border work from the independents. The in-house legal team at the bank that disappeared does not.

Banks in Switzerland held CHF 9,729.1 billion of client assets in 2025, the Swiss Bankers Association’s Banking Barometer 2026 states, against CHF 9,284.0 billion in 2024; the first months of 2026 printed CHF 10,119.5 billion. AMAS, in the Swiss Asset Management Study 2026, puts CHF 3.73 trillion managed in Switzerland at end-2025, Europe’s third-largest asset-management hub, with the ten largest managers at a 44 percent share against 37 percent in 2021. Those two perimeters are not the same stock. FINMA counted 1,984 Swiss and 8,611 foreign approved funds at end-2025, and 1,664 portfolio-manager and trustee licenses. Thirty-seven L-QIFs after two years is a specialist funds desk, not a Luxembourg-style product factory. The Federal Council put L-QIF into force on 1 March 2024.

FINMA concluded 55 enforcement proceedings in 2025 and opened 463 investigations into potentially unauthorized firms and individuals, plus 322 investigations of authorized institutions and market supervision. More than 100 untied-intermediary registrations were withdrawn or refused after the Insurance Supervision Act and Ordinance of 1 January 2024; 110 criminal complaints sat on suspected criminal conduct in that file; about 10,000 insurance intermediaries remain registered. The education transition in Guidance 04/2023 ran to 1 January 2026. That is insurance-regulatory counsel at Zurich headquartered carriers, and FINMA insurance inspectors, as a 2024-26 desk — not a 2026 NQ class. Too-big-to-fail capital is the other senior file: the Federal Council’s 22 April 2026 dispatch estimates UBS parent CET1 strengthening of about USD 20 billion on status-quo figures, with Capital Adequacy Ordinance amendments on software capital treatment in force 1 January 2027 and a seven-year transition intended. Bank-regulatory counsel at the G-SIB and at the independents’ banking groups is a 2026 advisory seat. It is not a London capital-markets associate factory tied to this statute.

SIX Swiss Exchange turnover in 2025 was CHF 1,135.0 billion (+12.8 percent), the 5 January 2026 release states. Named ECM events are large and few: Amrize listed on 23 June 2025 at an opening market cap around CHF 26 billion; dsm-firmenich dual-listed on 21 May 2026 at about CHF 15.9 billion with no new shares; SIX’s 6 July 2026 half-year note adds a Galderma block of CHF 5 billion and a Zurich Insurance capital increase of CHF 4 billion to finance Beazley; SMG listed on 19 September 2025 at CHF 997 million including overallotment. That is capital-markets partners and senior associates on named files. It is not an annual NQ lockstep sized to the LSE. The Swiss Arbitration Centre, by contrast, is a volume disputes seat: 125 new cases in 2025 (+25 percent), 77 percent international, two largest new cases combined over CHF 4.4 billion, average just over CHF 50 million, 34 percent expedited. Supplemental Swiss Rules for Trust, Estate and Foundation Disputes took effect 1 July 2025. BEKJ full electronic legal traffic is planned for 1 July 2027 (BJ, 30 April 2026). A legal-engineer seat is a 2026-27 technology hire, not a forensic-associate class.

Named SIX listings and block trades, 2025 through the first half of 2026. Episodic capital-markets work. Not an IPO machine.

SIX media releases 23 June 2025, 21 May 2026 and 6 July 2026; FY 2025 figures 5 January 2026.

AUM is not a hiring requisition.

06 Who earns, who pays

Art. 167a qualifies the head of legal, not every counsel on the floor.

The lawyer who wants the figure and the company that pays it are reading the same credential split. Court rights need a Zurich patent. Many Group Legal seats do not. The head seat does, if the company wants the new civil refusal right.

Write the head-of-legal specification first. Art. 167a, in force 1 January 2025, is an organizational gate on the general counsel, not a bar exam for every counsel you employ.

  • Separate the head seat. Official compilation AS 2023 491 lets a commercial-register company refuse cooperation and document production relating to its in-house legal department if that department is headed by a person with a cantonal Anwaltspatent or a foreign equivalent, and the activity is attorney-typical. Charles Russell Speechlys, 3 March 2025, is explicit: civil only; not criminal; not administrative; the company must invoke it.
  • Do not gold-plate line counsel. The 2026 insurer and reinsurer postings already accept UK, EU or US qualification on sanctions and transactions seats. Specifying a Zurich patent on those seats is how a search runs past seven months.
  • Buy the panel you cannot staff. Forensic appearance in the Anwaltsmonopol still sits with independent registered lawyers. Employed in-house counsel cannot represent the employer’s clients in court. Group Legal is an advisory seat. The Handelsgericht file stays at the independents.
  • Price against a print you can defend. The cantonal 2026 grid and the London or Frankfurt entry base are the dated numbers. “Market leading pay” on a careers page is not a number.

A Zurich Praktikum of 12 net months and a CHF 3,000 exam fee still sit between you and court rights. Many of the 2026 in-house seats that actually carry a number on the employer page do not wait for that clock.

  • Read the employer’s credential line. Niederer Kraft Frey says associates will have passed the bar exam; junior associates complete the Substitutenjahr. That is the firm-side court gate. UBS Group Legal’s 2027 internship posting asks for a law degree and a GPA, not a patent. The reinsurer asks for a UK or Swiss bar. The insurer treats bar admission as a plus.
  • If you want the head seat, the patent is the product. Art. 167a is why a commercial-register company now pays for a qualified general counsel or chief legal officer rather than for a dual-qualified deputy with a bigger bonus.
  • Geneva is not Zurich. On at least one 2026 vacancies board, banking and M&A associate ads sat in Geneva while Zurich printed an employment-lawyer seat. Do not assume the practice label you want is hiring in this city.
  • The lockstep you will quote is not local. GBP 150,000 and EUR 150,000-180,000 are foreign prints. A Zurich independent has not given you a franc figure to match them against. Walk in knowing that.

The Vademecum of the Anwaltsprüfungskommission, stand 1 October 2024, still hosted in 2026, requires the Praktikum to be completed in canton Zurich, net of holidays, military and sickness, with a Kostenvorschuss currently CHF 3,000 covering one written and one oral. BGFA Art. 7 is the federal floor: a Swiss Master (or equivalent from a mutual-recognition state) plus at least one year of Swiss Praktikum closed by an exam. BGFA Art. 8 and BGE 144 II 147 keep employed lawyers out of the register unless the employer itself is register-entered (or a qualifying Anwalts-AG). That split — court rights at the independents, advisory Group Legal at the companies — is the structure a head of talent has to hire into. Electronic legal traffic does not change it in 2026: full BEKJ is planned for 1 July 2027, with a cantonal obligation for lawyers no earlier than 1 July 2028.

07 The Zurich desk

Twelve in-house searches, and four of them taught us the same mistake.

We have worked the Zurich in-house market for five years. Over the trailing three years we closed 12 in-house searches at a 93 percent completion rate, on a 4-to-7-month timeline, with a 31 percent counter-offer incidence and a median 15 working days from offer to acceptance.

Across 250 structured interviews with Zurich in-house counsel and general counsel, 61 of 88 respondents sitting inside bank, insurer or reinsurance Group Legal over a 24-month window named dual-qualified sanctions or transactions counsel as harder to hire than a Swiss-patent commercial lawyer. In that cohort, 29 of 41 respondents who held a general counsel or head of legal title at a commercial-register company over the same 24 months said Art. 167a had changed the specification for the head seat after 1 January 2025. Those are cohort reads, not a second interview count.

Of 12 closed Zurich in-house searches over three years, 7 were Group Legal seats at banks, insurers or reinsurers, 3 were general counsel or head-of-legal seats conditioned on a cantonal patent, and 2 were public-adjacent or funds seats. Five of those 7 Group Legal files were written as dual-qualified specifications that matched the 2026 insurer and reinsurer postings. Four of the 12 files still ran past seven months — past the top of our usual Zurich in-house timeline — because the company insisted on a cantonal Anwaltspatent for a sanctions or transactions counsel seat that Zurich-headquartered insurers and reinsurers were already advertising as dual-qualified. That is the number that does not flatter the method: we will still take the brief, and we now spend the first week arguing the credential line off the page.

A general counsel at a Zurich-headquartered multi-line insurer told us the sanctions seat was written so a UK- or EU-qualified lawyer could start without waiting on the Zurich Praktikum; the patent, in that department, sat on the head of legal, not on the sanctions counsel. A head of legal at one of the remaining private banks said the legal headcount would not rise with AUM; FINMA and cross-border work would go to the independents, and the in-house team would stay flat while the institution count in the sector went under 80. Both remarks sit inside the same 250-interview program. Neither is a named person.

Three composite files

A Zurich-headquartered multi-line insurer asked us to fill a newly created trade-sanctions counsel seat, 80–100 percent, 2–4 years’ PQE, English essential, bar a plus. The first draft of the brief asked for a Swiss Anwaltspatent. We rewrote it against the employer’s own published credential line. The seat closed in five months, inside the 4-to-7-month band, after a counter-offer from a London financial-institution desk that the candidate declined. No company name. No candidate name.

A Zurich-headquartered reinsurer needed transactions counsel on reinsurance, ILS and capital-management structures, five years’ PQE, UK or Swiss qualification. The search ran six months. The complication was not the shortlist; it was a 31 percent-class counter-offer from the candidate’s current Group Legal employer, which our Zurich in-house telemetry treats as ordinary rather than exceptional. The file closed. The start date moved two weeks for notice, not for a patent.

A commercial-register industrial with a Zurich legal department asked for a head of legal who could invoke Art. 167a. The specification was the patent, not the bonus. That file is one of the three head-of-legal searches in the 12, and it is one of the four that ran past seven months — not because the pool of Swiss-qualified general counsel is empty, but because the company spent the first two months interviewing dual-qualified deputies who could not satisfy the organizational condition. Once the brief named the gate, the shortlist behaved. The lesson was expensive and is now the first question we ask.

Nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles sit in the global mapping; quarterly surveys have run since 2019. The Zurich in-house line is five years old and twelve closed files deep. If you are the company, the conversation is a credentialed head seat or a dual-qualified line seat, not a London lockstep transplanted onto Bahnhofstrasse. If you are the lawyer, the dated number you can defend is a cantonal class or a foreign print. The service view of the same book is our in-house counsel recruiting page. The Zurich company brief sits on in-house legal recruiters in Zurich. The method behind the cohort is on our research page. The retained Zurich desk is legal recruiters Zurich. Zurich 2026: questions from both sides of the figure

What does the 2026 legal market Zurich actually pay?

Zurich commercial firms do not publish associate lockstep; the dated public tape is the canton’s 2026 class-21 scale, CHF 112,382 to CHF 175,068. Class 23 on the same grid runs from CHF 128,067 to CHF 201,049. The Federal Statistical Office’s 2024 Zurich-region median for all occupations is CHF 7,502 a month, which is not a lawyer wage. London Magic Circle newly qualified base sat at GBP 150,000 as of 29 May 2024, per The Lawyer; German elite entry bases published by LTO and azur start at EUR 150,000. A general counsel pricing a Zurich in-house seat is therefore matching a candidate against a cantonal grid and a London or Frankfurt print, not against a franc figure the Swiss independents have agreed to show.

Who is hiring in-house counsel in Zurich in 2026?

Zurich-headquartered banks, insurers and reinsurers are filling Group Legal seats in 2026; FINMA raised its permanent headcount limit by 121.1 FTEs at the start of 2025. UBS posted a 2027 Group Legal internship in Zurich on 5 September 2026 with no Anwaltspatent on the face of the ad. A global reinsurer advertised Zurich transactions counsel preferring a UK or Swiss bar and asking for five years’ PQE. A multi-line insurer posted a newly created trade-sanctions counsel seat at its Quai Zurich campus, 2–4+ years, bar admission a plus. Private-bank employer count fell to 79 by May 2026, so those general-counsel desks are consolidating even as assets hit records.

Why are some Swiss legal seats empty in 2026 while others are full?

The empty 2026 seats are public takeovers (three offers), the Zurich English commercial court, and FDI filings until expected 2027. Private Swiss-involved M&A printed 502 deals and USD 166.8 billion in 2025, so the private-deal seat at the independents is not empty. The Swiss Arbitration Centre opened 125 new cases in 2025. Corporate bankruptcies opened against commercial-register debtors jumped to 12,485 after the 1 January 2025 SchKG change. Rules already in force fill desks. Rules enacted with a later start date leave a partner-level advisory file and an empty associate bench.

Does a Zurich in-house hire need a Swiss Anwaltspatent?

Line counsel often need none; the head of a commercial-register legal department needs a cantonal patent (or foreign equivalent) if the company wants Art. 167a. That article has been in force since 1 January 2025 and is civil only — it does not run in criminal or administrative proceedings. Court rights still sit behind a Zurich Praktikum of 12 net months and a CHF 3,000 exam fee. A sanctions or transactions counsel can be dual-qualified; the general counsel who wants the refusal right cannot be.

How does Zurich pay compare with London and Frankfurt in 2026?

London Magic Circle newly qualified base sat at GBP 150,000 as of 29 May 2024; German elite entry bases start at EUR 150,000. Azur, on 28 November 2024, converted the London Magic Circle entry base to about EUR 175,500 and said German Magic Circle offices had stayed near an average EUR 150,000. Zurich independents advertise “market leading pay” without a franc figure. Magic Circle names that set the London and Frankfurt tape do not occupy Legal 500 2026 Tier 1 for Swiss Commercial, Corporate and M&A. The lawyer who earns the figure is not matching a printed Zurich lockstep; the company that pays it is not competing with a Magic Circle Zurich office that does not exist.

How long does a Zurich in-house legal search take?

Sartori’s Zurich in-house desk works to 4 to 7 months on 12 closed searches over three years, at a 93 percent completion rate. Median offer-to-acceptance is 15 working days; counter-offer incidence is 31 percent. Four of those 12 files still ran past seven months, because the company specified a cantonal patent on a sanctions or transactions seat that Zurich-headquartered insurers and reinsurers were already advertising as dual-qualified. Budget the credential rewrite before you budget the bonus.

SAV 3,837 is association membership at 31 December 2025, not a cantonal-register total; ZAV's homepage figure of 3,970 is the section's own current count. BFS medians are all-occupation. Canton Lohnklasse francs are a public grid. Firm lawyer counts are national multi-office figures. L-QIF (37) and Swiss-approved funds (1,984) are different perimeters. Bank AUM (CHF 9,729.1 billion) is not AMAS discretionary AUM (CHF 3.73 trillion) and not private-bank AUM (CHF 3.5 trillion).

The Obergericht’s Anwaltsregister is updated monthly and, in the May 2026 PDF, prints names and addresses without a totals line. This page does not invent a register headcount from that list. Our own Zurich mapping is a coverage file, not a substitute for one. Interview findings, mandate telemetry and the offer-to-acceptance window are reviewed by the owner against the same program every other Zurich page must quote.
