In-house legal recruiters in Zurich
Retained search for general counsel and chief executives hiring into a Zurich payroll: banks, insurers and reinsurers, a cantonal patent rule, and a notice period that ends on the last day of a month.
›Twelve Zurich files, and a firm GC clock of 11 weeks
In house legal recruiters Zurich companies retain when a general counsel seat will not fill from a posting. Sartori & Partners has completed 400+ placements since 2017 (230+ in-house), including 52 GC and CLO searches: shortlist in 24 days, accepted offer in a median of 11 weeks. The Zurich in-house line closed 12 searches over three years at 93 percent completion, over 4 to 7 months. A NASDAQ-listed medtech in Boston hired its successor general counsel in week 11, from a shortlist of four on day 24. Swiss Bar Association counted 3,837 members in canton Zurich on 31 December 2025.
01 — The brief answer
A Zurich seat is a payroll, a patent rule, and two clocks.
General counsel recruiters Zurich companies call are retained for the head of a legal department, or for the counsel under that head. A posting reaches people who are looking. The counsel who already runs sanctions, transactions or FINMA correspondence at a Zurich bank is usually in post. In-house counsel recruiting is the company-side practice. The firm was founded in 2017 by Lorenzo Sartori. The market map is 1,480,000+ lawyers.
Two clocks measure different books. Across 52 general counsel and chief legal officer searches since 2017, the shortlist arrives in 24 days and the accepted offer in a median of 11 weeks, range 8 to 16. The Zurich in-house line, counsel through head of legal, closed 12 searches over three years at a 93 percent completion rate, on a timeline of 4 to 7 months. The 11-week median is the firm GC book. City context for private practice is on legal recruitment in Zurich. The 2026 tape is on legal market Zurich 2026.

02 — The local market
Banks, insurers and reinsurers write the Zurich payroll.
The buyers a general counsel in Zurich staffs hold a Swiss employment contract and a group legal department. UBS, in its workforce disclosure for 31 December 2025, reported 105,236 internal employees and 103,177 full-time equivalents, with 33 percent of the workforce in Switzerland. The 2025 annual report records the 2024 mergers of UBS AG with Credit Suisse AG and of UBS Switzerland AG with Credit Suisse (Schweiz) AG, and a first-quarter 2025 consolidation of 95 Swiss branches. That integration is Group Legal work: client migration and one supervisory dialogue with FINMA.
Zurich Insurance Group is headquartered in Zurich. Its 2025 sustainability report records 65,437 employees at 31 December 2025, equal to 63,965 full-time equivalents. Full-year 2025 business operating profit was USD 8.9 billion, reported on 19 February 2026. Swiss Re was founded in Zurich in 1863 and is still headquartered there. The 2025 management report records 14,893 employees at the end of 2025, 14,449 full-time positions on an annual average, and group net income of USD 4.8 billion. All three groups list on SIX Swiss Exchange. None publishes a legal-department headcount.
FINMA's seat is Bern. Its 2025 staff chapter records a permanent headcount limit raised by 121.1 FTEs at the start of 2025, to 734.7, an average of 698 FTEs during 2025 against 634 in 2024, and turnover of 6.8 percent. Zurich bank, insurer and reinsurer counsel are the people who answer those inspections.
KPMG, on 14 January 2026, counted 502 Swiss-involved M&A transactions in 2025, about USD 166.8 billion, against 464 transactions and USD 115.1 billion in 2024. Pharmaceuticals and life sciences were 74 deals and USD 53.0 billion. Technology, media and telecommunications were 84 deals and USD 9.8 billion. Private equity was in 142 transactions, 28 percent, USD 46.2 billion. Swiss buyers acquired foreign targets in 225 cases, foreign buyers acquired Swiss targets in 133, and domestic deals were 49. Zurich Group Legal sees that tape as financing, listings, reinsurance and group opinions.
The Association of Swiss In-House Counsel, VSUJ / SICA, was founded in 1982 and counts more than 800 members working in over 300 companies. Membership is voluntary and national. The Swiss Bar Association's membership statistics at 31 December 2025 count 11,910 active members, 3,837 of them in the Zurich column. The Zurich Bar Association, on its homepage as read on 7 October 2026, states 3,967 members and calls itself the largest section of the Swiss Bar Association. Those rolls are association membership. Article 8 of the Federal Act on the Free Movement of Lawyers keeps company-employed counsel off the cantonal register, which is why the in-house seat sits with VSUJ.
Of the 12 closed Zurich in-house searches over three years, 7 were Group Legal seats at banks, insurers or reinsurers, 3 were general counsel or head-of-legal seats conditioned on a cantonal patent, and 2 were public-adjacent or funds seats. 5 of those 7 Group Legal files were written as dual-qualified specifications. Across 250 structured interviews with Zurich in-house counsel and general counsel, 61 of 88 respondents sitting inside bank, insurer or reinsurance Group Legal over a 24-month window named dual-qualified sanctions or transactions counsel as harder to hire than a Swiss-patent commercial lawyer. In that cohort, 29 of 41 respondents who held a general counsel or head of legal title at a commercial-register company said Article 167a had changed the specification for the head seat after 1 January 2025. The 250 is one cohort. The cuts are subsets of it.
03 — Compensation
The franc figures a Zurich offer can attach to a slide.
The dated public cells a Zurich offer can cite in 2026 are a title tracker and a cantonal employee grid. Neither cell is the chair at UBS, Zurich Insurance Group or Swiss Re. The wider Swiss read is on lawyer salary in Switzerland 2026 and in-house counsel salary in Switzerland 2026.
PayScale's Legal Counsel page for Switzerland, last updated 19 September 2025, is the tracker in the table. Average base is CHF 124,692 and the median is CHF 125,000, on 55 profiles. The base range is CHF 56,000 to CHF 187,000. Total pay on that page runs from CHF 56,000 to CHF 200,000. Early-career total compensation, 1 to 4 years, averages CHF 116,957 on 15 salaries. Mid-career total compensation, 5 to 9 years, averages CHF 120,340 on 22 salaries. The experience rows are total compensation. CHF 124,692 is average base. The title is Legal Counsel.

| Canton of Zurich, Lohnklasse 21 | CHF 112,382–175,068 | Grundlohn including the 13th month, Anlaufstufe 1 to the top step | Canton of Zurich Lohntabelle 2026 |
Lohnklasse 21 for 2026 runs from CHF 112,382 at Anlaufstufe 1 to CHF 175,068 at the top step. Grundlohn includes the 13th month, so a private offer quoted as twelve monthly salaries is a different unit. The grid pays cantonal jurists under the Stellenplan.
The retained fee is 25 to 30 percent of total first-year compensation. Thirty percent of the fee is paid at engagement and kept if the client cancels. A bonus, a 13th month and a pension contribution the contract actually pays sit inside that total. GC, CLO and CCO searches carry a 12-month replacement term. Other in-house searches carry 6 months.
04 — Notice and the patent
Notice runs after acceptance. The patent is a separate credential.
Article 335c of the Code of Obligations, compilation current at 31 December 2025, applies after probation. The periods in the table expire at the end of a calendar month. A written individual, standard or collective contract may vary them. A reduction below one month is available only by collective employment contract, and only in the first year of service. A general counsel contract can say six months. The statute sets the floor and the end-of-month rule.
Article 335b makes the first month probation unless the parties agree otherwise in writing, and allows an extension to three months. During probation either party may end the contract on seven days' notice. The search clock ends at acceptance. Notice, garden leave and the end-of-month expiry run after it. An acceptance on 4 March with three months' notice produces a 30 June start, unless the contract says otherwise.
| Situation | Notice | Statute |
|---|---|---|
| Probation, default one month, maximum three | 7 days | Art. 335b CO |
| First year of service, after probation | 1 month, to month-end | Art. 335c para. 1 CO |
| Second through ninth year | 2 months, to month-end | Art. 335c para. 1 CO |
| From the tenth year | 3 months, to month-end | Art. 335c para. 1 CO |
| Written individual contract | May be longer; below one month only via a collective contract, and only in year one | Art. 335c para. 2 CO |
Article 8(1)(d) of the Federal Act on the Free Movement of Lawyers requires a registered lawyer to be able to practice independently, and allows employment only by a person entered in a cantonal register. Paragraph 2 excepts a recognized charitable organization, for mandates inside that organization's purpose. A SIX-listed bank is neither a registered lawyer nor that charity. The general counsel's employment is lawful. The register entry, while that employment is the job, is what Article 8 withholds. Court appearance for the company's customers stays with the panel.
Article 167a of the Civil Procedure Code has applied since 1 January 2025. A party may refuse to cooperate and to hand over documents connected with its in-house legal service when three conditions hold. The party is entered in the Swiss commercial register or a comparable foreign register. The legal service is headed by a person with a cantonal license to practice, or who meets the professional requirements to practice in their country of origin. The activity would be profession-specific for a lawyer. A third party in that legal service may refuse on the same conditions. Charles Russell Speechlys, on 3 March 2025, states the right is for civil proceedings. Criminal proceedings and administrative proceedings sit outside it. FINMA enforcement is administrative. The civil refusal right requires the patent, or a home-state equivalent, on the head of legal. Sanctions counsel and transactions counsel are hired on the product qualification.
Line counsel on the 2026 insurer and reinsurer desks are dual-qualified: a UK, EU, US or Swiss qualification, English, and years on the product. The head seat, where the company wants Article 167a, is a patent seat or a foreign-equivalent seat. Putting the patent on a sanctions requisition, or a dual-qualified deputy on a head-of-legal requisition, is how a Zurich file leaves the 4 to 7 month band. 4 of the 12 closed searches ran past seven months. When notice will not move, interim legal talent can run beside the permanent search.

The process above is the retained sequence: brief, market map, approach, shortlist, offer, close. Across 52 general counsel and chief legal officer searches since 2017, the shortlist arrives in 24 days and the accepted offer in a median of 11 weeks, range 8 to 16. Offer acceptance on corporate mandates is 96 percent. Retained corporate mandates complete at 92 percent. Retention of placed in-house leaders is 97 percent at 12 months and 91 percent at 24 months. A NASDAQ-listed medtech in Boston hired its successor general counsel on that clock: a shortlist of four on day 24, accepted offer in week 11. The file is published as a case study.
The Zurich in-house line has been worked for 5 years. Over the trailing three years it closed 12 searches at a 93 percent completion rate, on a 4 to 7 month timeline. Counter-offer incidence is 31 percent. The median from offer to acceptance is 15 working days. The line covers counsel seats and head seats together.
Sartori maps about 2,500 lawyers in Zurich. The figure is coverage of the city file. The Swiss Bar Association column for the canton is 3,837 active members at 31 December 2025. The Zurich Bar Association states 3,967 members. Those rolls are association membership.
The interview work is its own count: one cohort of 250 structured interviews with Zurich in-house counsel and general counsel.
After acceptance, add Article 335c. A counsel in year six is on at least two months' notice to month-end, unless the contract is longer. A head of legal in year eleven is on at least three months. Illness, accident and pregnancy protection can push the end date. The offer letter should name the notice the candidate is under and whether the company will pay in lieu. The 31 percent counter-offer rate is why the package is built before the resignation conversation.
06 — Engagements
Three Zurich files, and the Boston GC succession.
The Boston succession is the firm record a board can read without a city attached. Shortlist of four on day 24. Accepted offer in week 11. Twelve-month replacement term in the letter. It sits inside the 52 general counsel and chief legal officer searches. The three files below are Zurich in-house composites inside the 12. No company name. No candidate name.
A Zurich-headquartered multi-line insurer asked for a newly created trade-sanctions counsel, 80 to 100 percent, 2 to 4 years' PQE, English essential, bar admission a plus. The first draft of the brief asked for a Swiss Anwaltspatent. The brief was rewritten against the credential line the employer type was already using for that seat. The seat closed in five months, inside the 4-to-7-month band, after a counter-offer from a London financial-institution desk that the candidate declined.
A Zurich-headquartered reinsurer needed transactions counsel on reinsurance, insurance-linked securities and capital-management structures, five years' PQE, a UK or Swiss qualification. The search ran six months. The complication was a counter-offer from the candidate's current Group Legal employer. On this line a 31 percent counter-offer incidence is the ordinary rate, not an exception. The start date moved two weeks for notice, not for a patent.
A commercial-register industrial with a Zurich legal department asked for a head of legal who could invoke Article 167a. The specification was the patent, or a home-state equivalent, not the bonus. The file is one of the three head-of-legal searches in the 12, and it is one of the four that ran past seven months. The company spent the first two months interviewing dual-qualified deputies who could not satisfy the organizational condition. Once the brief named the gate, the shortlist behaved.
Sanctions and transactions counsel are dual-qualified seats. The head of legal, where the company wants the civil refusal right, is a patent seat. The fee, the replacement window (12 months for GC, CLO and CCO; 6 months for other in-house) and a 24-month off-limits term on the client's legal department go in the engagement letter before anyone is called. A general counsel search for the chair is briefed as that mandate.

Which Zurich employers actually hire in-house counsel?
The standing buyers are Zurich-headquartered banks, insurers and reinsurers. At 31 December 2025 UBS reported 105,236 employees, 33 percent of them in Switzerland. Zurich Insurance Group reported 65,437 employees and 2025 business operating profit of USD 8.9 billion. Swiss Re, headquartered in Zurich, reported 14,893 employees at the end of 2025. FINMA averaged 698 FTEs in 2025 after raising its headcount limit by 121.1 to 734.7. VSUJ counts more than 800 in-house members in over 300 companies. That roll is national membership.
What compensation figures can a Zurich offer cite in 2026?
PayScale's Legal Counsel tracker for Switzerland, updated 19 September 2025, puts average base at CHF 124,692 and the median at CHF 125,000 on 55 profiles. The base range is CHF 56,000 to CHF 187,000. Canton of Zurich Lohnklasse 21 for 2026, Grundlohn including the 13th month, runs from CHF 112,382 to CHF 175,068. That grid pays cantonal employees. Listed-group general counsel cash is not in either cell. The fuller table is on the Switzerland in-house salary page.
Does a Zurich general counsel need a cantonal Anwaltspatent?
Article 8(1)(d) of the Federal Act on the Free Movement of Lawyers lets a lawyer enter a cantonal register as an employee only of someone already on a cantonal register. A bank, insurer or industrial fails that test, so the employment carries no right of audience. Article 167a of the Civil Procedure Code, in force since 1 January 2025, lets a commercial-register company refuse cooperation and document production about its in-house legal service in civil proceedings when the head holds a cantonal license, or meets the home-state professional requirements, and the activity would be profession-specific for a lawyer. Charles Russell Speechlys, 3 March 2025, limits that refusal to civil proceedings. Criminal proceedings and administrative proceedings, including FINMA enforcement, sit outside it.
What notice runs before a Zurich counsel can start?
After probation, Article 335c of the Code of Obligations, compilation as of 31 December 2025, sets notice at one month in year one, two months in years two through nine, and three months from year ten, expiring at the end of a calendar month. A written contract may set a longer period. A cut below one month is available only by collective employment contract, and only in year one. Article 335b sets seven days' notice during probation: default one month, extendable in writing to three. The search clock ends at acceptance. On one Zurich reinsurer transactions file the start moved 2 weeks for notice.
How long does a Zurich in-house search take, and how is it paid?
Across 52 GC and CLO searches since 2017, the shortlist arrives in 24 days and the accepted offer in a median of 11 weeks, range 8 to 16. The Zurich in-house line closed 12 searches over three years on a 4-to-7-month timeline, at 93 percent completion, with a 31 percent counter-offer rate and 15 working days from offer to acceptance. The fee is 25 to 30 percent of total first-year compensation. Thirty percent of the fee is paid at engagement. GC, CLO and CCO searches carry a 12-month replacement term. Other in-house searches carry 6 months.
