Salary · Switzerland 2026
Lawyer salary in Switzerland, 2026.
The dated cells a general counsel can actually open: federal and Zurich Lohnklassen in CHF, the London newly-qualified lockstep in GBP, the US associate scale in USD, and the Swiss National Bank prints that put all three on one page.
The dated number, in three currencies.
A lawyer salary Switzerland conversation in 2026 starts with a published cell, not a rumor. Pick the figure a general counsel is actually matching and watch it sit against the Swiss public grids.
The 2026 federal Jurist/in Lohnklasse 24 maximum, gross annual at 100 percent from 1 January 2026, excluding locality and family allowances. USD 195,227 / GBP 144,530 at the Swiss National Bank print of 11 September 2026. The public Swiss floor a company can cite.
Every CHF/USD/GBP triple on this page uses the Swiss National Bank print of 11 September 2026. The conversion is not a salary source. The full table is below.

Public Swiss grids, a London lockstep and a US scale, converted on one print date. Anything without a dated primary publisher is omitted.
The matching problem is arithmetic. At the Swiss National Bank print of 11 September 2026, the London Magic Circle newly-qualified base of £150,000 on Legal Cheek’s 2026 Firms Most List, compiled 29 September 2025, equals CHF 164,970. That cell sits CHF 6,016 above the 2026 federal Jurist/in Lohnklasse 24 maximum of CHF 158,954 in the Eidgenossisches Personalamt table valid from 1 January 2026, inside Canton of Zurich Lohnklasse 21 (CHF 120,775 to CHF 175,068), and CHF 50,601 below Zurich Lohnklasse 24’s Leistungsstufe 29 of CHF 215,571.
The US London newly-qualified print of £180,000 on the same Legal Cheek list converts to CHF 197,964, which already clears the federal Leiter/in Recht Lohnklasse 28 maximum of CHF 192,316. The 2026 US first-year associate base of USD 235,000 on the Milbank scale announced 2 June 2026 and effective 1 July 2026 converts to CHF 191,337 — above the federal jurist maximum before a bonus is added. A Swiss general counsel who is told to “match London” is not being asked to match a Confederation jurist. They are being asked to match a foreign lockstep against a Swiss firm base that is not on any careers page we opened.

Bezirksgericht Zurich Auditorat, 2026 grid, LK 13 Leistungsstufe 1.
Bezirksgericht Zurich Auditorat ↗Two numbers that look like a lawyer salary, and are not. The Federal Statistical Office’s Earnings Structure Survey for observation year 2024, released 25 November 2025, put the economy-wide standardized monthly median at CHF 7,024 (annualized at twelve standardized months: CHF 84,288). NOGA section M — professional, scientific and technical activities, of which legal work is a subset — sat at a monthly median of CHF 8,405 (annualized CHF 100,860). Banks on the same page: CHF 10,723 a month. Those are industry medians for all employees in the section, not a Rechtsanwalt scale. The occupational-group tables released 24 February 2026 exist; the CH-ISCO-19 legal-professional cell is not in the HTML we opened, so it is not on this page.
STATENT 2024, published 20 August 2026, counted 89,135 employees in NOGA 69 (legal advice, tax advice and audit) across 22,617 enterprises. That is not 89,135 lawyers. Band the lawyer population inside SAV/FSA membership instead: 11,910 active members at 31 December 2025, of whom 3,837 sat in canton Zurich. The 2024 SAV series closed at 11,737; the 2025 print is 173 members higher. Membership is voluntary and does not capture in-house counsel who hold no practicing certificate used in a SAV seat.
A Swiss general counsel who is told to match London is not being asked to match a Confederation jurist.
Three buyers, three instruments, one missing cell.
The person who earns the 2026 figure and the person who pays it are reading the same table. They are not sitting in the same seat.
Published public gridUnpublished private base
- Public employer Confederation and cantonal justice. Lohnklassen in a PDF. The general counsel in a company does not pay these, but they are the only Swiss lawyer salaries a board can open without a call.
- Company in-house Banks, insurers, pharma, funds, SIX issuers. Advisory seats. The budget is a London or US lockstep the hiring committee already has, matched against a Swiss firm that will not print its associate base.
- Elite Swiss firm The alternative employer. Careers pages advertise practice labels and “market leading pay.” They do not advertise CHF. That hole is why the foreign lockstep became the Swiss conversation.
Legal 500 Switzerland’s Commercial, corporate and M&A list (contributions dated 13 July 2026 and 11 June 2026) puts Bär & Karrer, Homburger, Lenz & Staehelin, Niederer Kraft Frey and Walder Wyss in Tier 1. Those are the firm-side payers for unpublished associate CHF in Zurich and Geneva. Homburger’s own page records 43 partners and over 160 professionals at Prime Tower in Zurich. Bär & Karrer states more than 200 lawyers, with a Zug office opened in September 1999, Geneva in October 2000 and Basel in March 2022. Lenz & Staehelin’s Chambers Global 2026 card records 200+ lawyers and 52 partners worldwide, with offices in Geneva, Lausanne and Zurich. None of those cards carry a compensation figure. Lenz & Staehelin’s associate careers page advertises Avocat·e and Anwältin/Anwalt seats in Corporate and M&A, Banking and Finance, and Wettbewerb und Regulierte Märkte, plus “market leading pay” with no CHF attached.
Banking and finance is two seats, not one. Legal 500’s Zurich banking list, dated 21 April 2026 on the page, ranks Bär & Karrer, Baker McKenzie Switzerland, Homburger, Lenz & Staehelin and Niederer Kraft Frey in Tier 1. The Geneva banking list ranks Lenz & Staehelin and Schellenberg Wittmer in Tier 1. A general counsel matching London lockstep inside a Zurich-headquartered bank is buying a different panel from a Geneva private-bank or commodities desk. Capital markets Tier 1 on the same ranking is Advestra, Homburger and Niederer Kraft Frey — the desks that price SIX equity work. Regulatory, compliance and investigations Tier 1 is Bär & Karrer, Homburger and Schellenberg Wittmer, which is the FINMA-facing firm market.
The company-side buyer on this page is a general counsel, chief legal officer or head of legal at a Swiss group who has to put a lawyer on the payroll and has a London or New York cell already in the pack. Employer pages we opened describe the seats by type: Group General Counsel on the group executive board of a Zurich-headquartered globally systemically important bank; Legal Counsel, Global Transactions, at a Zurich-listed reinsurer; Legal Counsel, Investment Solutions and Distribution, at a Zurich private bank; Senior Counsel / Senior Investment Fund Lawyer at a Zug-area private-markets manager; Legal Counsel, Technical Operations or Data and Digital, at a Basel or Zug pharma and diagnostics group. A UBS Group Legal internship posting dated 5 September 2026, for a 1 July 2027 start in Zurich, names the in-house pipe as banking regulation, financial services, commercial contracts, technology and governance, in English and German. That is an advisory seat inside Group Functions, not a cantonal-register seat.
Of 16 closed Zurich associate searches Sartori ran over the trailing three years, 11 were company-side in-house seats. Nine of those 11 briefs arrived with a London or US lockstep cell already in the hiring pack. A group general counsel at a Zurich-headquartered globally systemically important bank told us the London £150,000 newly-qualified figure was the number the board already had, and that the Swiss firm panel would not disclose an associate base the committee could put next to it.
The person who earns the figure is sitting in one of three chairs. A federal Jurist/in or Leiter/in Recht, on the EPA grid. A cantonal Staatsanwalt, Gerichtsschreiber or Auditor, on the Zurich 2026 Lohnklassen. Or a company lawyer whose paycheck is being built against a foreign lockstep because the Swiss firm alternative will not print. The forensic monopoly under BGFA Article 2 is court representation. In-house counsel are not in that monopoly. Holding an Anwaltspatent does not put a company employee on the Zurich Anwaltsregister; Article 8(1)(d) is why.
Across the same 250 structured interviews, 74 associates at Swiss firms over a 24-month window sat in the cohort. Forty-one of those 74 said their own firm had never published a CHF lockstep they could show a client or a spouse. The published table on this page is therefore more useful to the company that pays than to the associate who wants a Swiss private-practice number in writing.
| Payer | Seat the money buys | Pay instrument | What is published | Credential the buyer can require |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Company in-house | Advisory counsel inside a bank, insurer, pharma group, fund or SIX issuer | Internal band, often set against a London or US lockstep | Nothing Swiss and private; foreign locksteps and public grids only | Swiss Master, UK or US qualification, languages; Anwaltspatent as an asset, not a register seat |
| Elite Swiss firm | Associate on a ranked M&A, banking, capital-markets or regulatory desk | Unpublished base plus bonus | Practice labels on careers pages; no CHF | Swiss Master, Praktikum, Anwaltspatent, German or French; LL.M. advertised as support, not as BGFA law |
| Confederation / canton | Jurist/in, Leiter/in Recht, Staatsanwalt, Gerichtsschreiber, Auditor | Lohnklasse plus 13th month | The 2026 PDF | Master; optional patent and LL.M. on the federal reference functions; German as Amtssprache for Zurich courts |
The credential decides which cell you are even allowed to occupy.
A 2026 paycheck in Switzerland is downstream of a register rule written for court work, not for company payrolls.
DegreePayroll seat
- Swiss Master, then Praktikum BGFA Article 7 requires a Swiss Lizentiat or Master, or an equivalent diploma, and a minimum one-year Praktikum in Switzerland closed by exam. A Bachelor is enough to start the Praktikum.
- Cantonal patent and the three lists In Zurich: the forensic Anwaltsregister, the EU/EFTA/UK list under Article 28, and the advisory-only Anwaltsverzeichnis. The patent is the ticket. The list is the seat.
- Independence, or the company payroll Article 8(1)(d) blocks a company employee from the forensic register unless the employer is itself a registered lawyer. The general counsel’s hire steps off the register on the way in.
The Federal Office of Justice page “Anwaltsrecht,” published 12 February 2026, is blunt: anyone who wants to represent parties before Swiss courts must enter the cantonal lawyers’ register of the canton where the office sits, with an Anwaltspatent and personal fitness. BGFA Article 2, status 1 July 2025, limits that monopoly to patent-holders acting in court. The Federal Council declined a Unternehmensjuristengesetz on 4 June 2010; the same BJ page still records that refusal. There is no in-house counsel statute coming to rescue privilege or register status in 2026.
Zurich’s path is operational, not theoretical. The Obergericht Anwaltsprüfungskommission Vademecum, stand 1 October 2024 and still served in April 2026, requires 12 net months of Praktikum in the canton, a cost advance currently CHF 3,000, a Monday written exam on OR, ZGB, IPRG, BGG, LugÜ, SchKG, ZPO, BGFA and GOG, then 160 minutes of oral for two candidates. German-language court work is assumed. The Bezirksgericht Zurich Auditorat publishes the trainee paycheck on the 2026 grid: probation three months at Lohnklasse 8 Anlaufstufe 2 for CHF 55,006 annual; months 4 to 14 at Lohnklasse 13 Anlaufstufe 1 for CHF 71,537; after the net year, Lohnklasse 13 Leistungsstufe 1 for CHF 74,070. That is the public junior lawyer seat a firm stagiaire competes with, and it is the only Swiss trainee compensation on this page because it is the only one a primary publisher printed.
UK-qualified supply changed on 1 July 2025, when the BGFA recognition agreement for UK professional qualifications entered into force. The BJ Merkblatt on Brexit consequences for UK lawyers before Swiss courts is dated 16 May 2025. Dual-qualified English solicitor plus Swiss patent is the product a general counsel matching London newly-qualified talent is actually buying. The BGFA does not require an LL.M.; elite-firm associate pages advertise LL.M. support anyway. Zug funds seats, on employer pages we could read, asked for English or US fund-formation qualification (Luxembourg, Delaware, Cayman) rather than a Zurich patent. A chief legal officer at a Zug-area private-markets manager told us the English-language qualification was the product, and the Zurich Anwaltspatent was an asset, not the seat.
Canton of Zurich justice is a volume employer on a published grid, not a lockstep. At 31 December 2025 the Staatsanwaltschaft counted 532 employees, 43,548 incoming matters and 42,629 closed. Function codes in force from 1 January 2025 identify Staatsanwalt (3240), Leitende/r Staatsanwalt (3244), Assistenzstaatsanwalt (3246), Gerichtsschreiber at the upper courts (6367) and Bezirksrichter (6383). The codes identify the seat; the CHF follows the class assigned in the Stellenplan. This page does not invent a class-to-title map. Einreihung from Lohnklasse 24, and for justice-function classes, sits with the Regierungsrat or the top cantonal courts.
Zürcher Anwaltsverband copy for 2025/26 says the association “zählt über 3800 Mitglieder.” SAV/FSA membership for Zurich at 31 December 2025 was 3,837. Those are the same order of magnitude; both are voluntary. They measure the private-practice professional body, not the in-house population a general counsel is hiring from.
The English-language qualification was the product, and the Zurich Anwaltspatent was an asset, not the seat.
2026 is an ordinance year sitting on a live capital-markets cycle.
The statutes that will change merger control and inbound state capital are not in force yet. The ECM calendar already is. Budget the seat against the clock that is actually running.
Live in 2026Go-live 2027
- Staffed now ECM and block trades, FINMA enforcement, bank-regulatory TBTF files, LETA/AMLA filings from 1 October 2026, arbitration caseload already up.
- Ordinance year Cartel Act SIEC ordinances consulted through 17 September 2026. Investment Screening ordinance consulted through 4 October 2026. Playbooks, not filings.
- Expected 2027 SIEC merger control and the Investment Screening Act. Sensitive deals may still notify under the old test before the switch. Not a junior-volume boom.
Parliament adopted the partial revision of the Cartel Act and the Investment Screening Act on the same day, 19 December 2025. SECO’s competition-law page records the core CartA change: merger control moves from the qualified market-dominance test to the Significant Impediment to Effective Competition test, with new provisions and revised ordinances expected to enter into force in 2027. The Federal Council opened consultation on three CartA ordinances on 27 May 2026, running through 17 September 2026. Fedlex BBl 2026 18 publishes the amendment; the referendum deadline was 17 April 2026; transitional Article 62 assesses merger filings under the law in force at notification. A general counsel sitting on a 2026 concentration can still choose the old test by notifying before 2027. That is a senior competition-counsel problem, not a reason to staff a junior army.
The Investment Screening Act subjects acquisitions of Swiss companies in especially critical sectors by foreign state-controlled investors to prior approval. SECO is explicit: no applications can be submitted or reviewed until the Act is in force, expected 2027. BBl 2026 31, published 7 January 2026, lists two mandatory-approval bands in Article 3: defense, security-IT, energy and water at or above 50 FTE or CHF 10 million worldwide turnover; and, at or above CHF 100 million turnover, university and center hospitals, pharma and medtech, ports and airports, rail, food-distribution hubs, telecom networks, systemically important financial-market infrastructure, and systemically important banks. Private, non-state buyers stay outside the statute as written. Ordinance consultation opened 11 June 2026 and closed 4 October 2026. In-house M&A at energy, pharma, bank and FMI targets, and FDI counsel at elite Zurich firms, are in playbook work now.
The clock that is not waiting is beneficial-owner transparency. The Federal Council, on 12 June 2026, set 1 October 2026 as the in-force date for the Act on the Transparency of Legal Persons and the Identification of Beneficial Owners and the revised Anti-Money Laundering Act, except postponed state-notary provisions. SIF describes a transparency register maintained by the Federal Department of Justice and Police, with due-diligence duties extended to consultancy related to real-estate transactions or the establishment and structure of legal entities. A Lenz & Staehelin explainer of the 12 June 2026 ordinance, published 16 June 2026, sets staggered filing windows: ordinary-audit corporations by 31 December 2026; other ordinary-audit entities by 31 January 2027; non-ordinary-audit AGs by 28 February 2027; remaining entities and foreign entities with Swiss nexus by 31 March 2027. That is a dated Q4 2026 through Q1 2027 surge at company legal departments, then a thinner change-reporting seat. FATF’s mutual evaluation of Switzerland is scheduled 2027 to 2028.
Bank-regulatory demand does not depend on SIEC. The Federal Council set too-big-to-fail parameters on 6 June 2025, adopted the Banking Act message on 22 April 2026, and opened further consultation on remaining Banking Act and Liquidity Ordinance measures on 12 August 2026, running to 19 November 2026. The FDF Too Big To Fail page, published 1 September 2026, puts the CET1 requirement increase at around USD 20 billion based on end-2025 data, with ordinance-level measures entering into force in January 2027 at the earliest. Senior managers regime, recovery and resolution, and additional FINMA powers are the seats. In-house Group Legal at the Zurich G-SIB is the buyer matching London lockstep on this file.
FINMA concluded 55 enforcement proceedings in 2025, against 38 in 2024, per the Annual Report 2025 enforcement chapter. It opened 463 investigations into potentially unauthorized firms and persons and 322 investigations of authorized institutions and market supervision; unauthorized-activity proceedings concluded in the year involved client assets of about CHF 94 million. SWI, on 21 April 2026, recorded 42 on-site inspections at UBS and an average permanent FINMA FTE of 617 against 554 in 2024. The regulator is itself a legal-talent buyer. WEKO and its secretariat, in the 31 March 2026 press release, processed 34 mergers, ran 18 investigations and 8 preliminary investigations, and handled about 350 administrative consultations. Thirty-four mergers is the 2025 baseline the 2027 SIEC test will sit on, not a 2026 hiring spike.
Public M&A is the thin slice. The Swiss Takeover Board Tätigkeitsbericht 2025, Zurich, 21 May 2026, recorded three public offers against six in each of 2024 and 2023, with combined offer value about CHF 1.35 billion. The largest, ZI Zenith (Advent) for u-blox, completed 26 November 2025 at an offer value of CHF 1,035,594,450. Nineteen share-buyback programs ran in the year. Do not staff a takeover army off three offers. Private M&A and ECM are the volume. Chambers Corporate M&A 2026 Switzerland, last updated 21 April 2026, attributes 502 Swiss-involvement transactions and USD 166.8 billion of value in 2025 to KPMG Clarity on M&A, against 464 deals and USD 115.1 billion in 2024. Deloitte’s Swiss SME M&A report dated 11 February 2026 counted 208 SME transactions in 2025, 32 percent of SME sale transactions in canton Zurich.
SIX is live in 2026. The exchange’s 5 January 2026 full-year release put 2025 equity capital increases by already-listed Swiss companies at CHF 2.7 billion against CHF 2.3 billion in 2024, with SMI year-end 13,267.5. The 6 July 2026 half-year note recorded a dsm-firmenich dual listing at market capitalization CHF 16 billion, a Galderma block trade of CHF 5 billion, and a Zurich Insurance capital increase of CHF 4 billion to finance Beazley. EQT’s own 13 March 2026 announcement put the Galderma placement at about CHF 4.9 billion. That is the 2026 table’s “who pays for lockstep-comparable talent” on the issuer and firm-capital-markets side. The Swiss Arbitration Centre, in its 24 February 2026 annual report, opened 125 new cases in 2025, up 25 percent, with the two largest combined over CHF 4.4 billion and Supplemental TEF Rules in force from 1 July 2025. Arbitration is a Geneva–Zurich dual seat. It is not the newly-qualified lockstep driver.
Two e-justice clocks, so they are not collapsed into one. Canton of Zurich requires professional representatives to act electronically in VRG administrative proceedings from 1 January 2027; the Aufsichtskommission told lawyers to register on justitia.swiss and report a Zustelladresse by 1 September 2026. Federally, BJ on 13 March 2026 planned full BEKJ in force on 1 July 2027, with cantonal mandatory e-communication in civil and criminal matters earliest one year after BEKJ and latest five years. Switzerland does not go paperless on 1 January 2027. Zurich administrative lawyers do have to be operational on that date.
The search is short. The credential argument is not.
Sartori has worked the Zurich associate line for five years. The closed-file record is modest, the counter-offer rate is not, and the miss we keep making is writing Anwaltspatent on a company brief.
We have worked in the Zurich market for five years, for general counsel at banks, insurers, pharma groups and funds, and for associate-line seats at elite Swiss firms. Over the trailing three years we closed 16 associate searches at a 93 percent completion rate, on a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks, with a median of 8 working days from offer to acceptance. Counter-offer incidence on that line is 36 percent — usually a Swiss firm matching a company offer, or a company matching a London-panel alternative the candidate can actually print.
Of those 16 closed files, 11 were company-side in-house seats and 5 were firm-side associate seats. Nine of the 11 company briefs arrived with a London or US lockstep cell already in the pack. Four of the 5 firm-side associate mandates that opened against a London newly-qualified cell ran to the 12-week end of the band, because the unpublished Swiss firm base could not be verified until late in the process. That is the slow segment, and it is ours: we still take firm-side briefs that depend on a number the employer will not show.
Sartori maps 2,500 lawyers in Zurich. That file records admission, employer and language. It does not record a private-practice lockstep, because no public register does. Quarterly surveys have run since 2019 across a global mapping of nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles; the Zurich interview work sits inside that program, not beside it.
Three closed files, no names
A globally systemically important bank, Zurich headquarters, needed a mid-level Group Legal counsel on banking regulation and recovery files tied to the 22 April 2026 Banking Act message. The brief opened with “Anwaltspatent required.” It closed, in week 9, as an advisory in-house seat for a dual-qualified English solicitor who held a Swiss patent and surrendered the Zurich register on joining. The board pack already carried the London £150,000 newly-qualified cell. Completion sat inside the 6-to-12-week band. The credential rewrite cost two weeks we should have spent at intake.
A Zug-area private-markets manager needed a senior investment-fund counsel for Luxembourg, Delaware and Cayman formation. The Swiss patent was listed as an asset. English was the working language. The search closed in week 11 against a US first-year converted cell of CHF 191,337 as the floor the hiring committee would not go below, not as the ceiling. The candidate had never sat on a Zurich forensic list. Article 8 was irrelevant, and we wasted a first conversation explaining it.
An elite Zurich corporate and M&A associate seat, ranked-firm side, opened against the same London newly-qualified cell. The firm would not put a CHF base in writing. A company counter-offer landed on day 6 of the 8-day median window. The file closed at week 12 on the firm side only after the practice chair described the unpublished band in a conversation we could not show the candidate in a document. That is a completion. It is not a clean one.
Common questions about lawyer pay in Switzerland in 2026
What is a typical lawyer salary Switzerland in 2026?
There is no single typical cell: published 2026 figures run from a Zurich court trainee’s CHF 55,006 to a cantonal Lohnklasse 29 cap of CHF 292,819. A federal Jurist/in maximum is CHF 158,954 (Lohnklasse 24) or CHF 167,271 (Lohnklasse 25) from 1 January 2026, per the Eidgenossisches Personalamt table. Elite Swiss firms do not publish an associate lockstep. A general counsel matching London newly-qualified talent is matching the Magic Circle 2026-list base of £150,000, which is CHF 164,970 at the Swiss National Bank print of 11 September 2026.
How does a Swiss general counsel match the London lockstep in 2026?
The London Magic Circle newly-qualified base on the 2026 Firms Most List is £150,000, equal to CHF 164,970 at the 11 September 2026 Swiss National Bank print. That cell sits above the 2026 federal Jurist/in Lohnklasse 24 maximum of CHF 158,954 and inside Zurich cantonal Lohnklasse 21 (CHF 120,775 to CHF 175,068). The US London newly-qualified print of £180,000 converts to CHF 197,964, which already clears the federal Leiter/in Recht Lohnklasse 28 maximum of CHF 192,316. The company is not matching a Swiss published grid. It is matching a foreign lockstep against unpublished Swiss firm bases. What that same company pays a Zurich general counsel, on canton and federal grids and the FINMA executive-board totals, is the general counsel salary Zurich 2026 page.
Why can a company-employed lawyer not sit on the Zurich forensic register?
BGFA Article 8(1)(d), status 1 July 2025, lets a registered lawyer be an employee only of persons who are themselves on a cantonal register. A bank, insurer, pharma group or funds manager is not that employer. The Federal Council declined an in-house counsel statute on 4 June 2010, and the Federal Office of Justice still stated that position on 12 February 2026. The general counsel is buying an advisory in-house seat, even when the hire holds an Anwaltspatent.
What is lawyer salary Zurich on the cantonal 2026 grid?
Canton of Zurich 2026 Lohnklasse 21 runs CHF 120,775 to CHF 175,068 including the 13th month. Lohnklasse 24 runs CHF 147,653 to CHF 215,571; Lohnklasse 29 caps at CHF 292,819. Function codes identify the seat — Staatsanwalt, Gerichtsschreiber, Bezirksrichter — but the class itself is assigned in the Stellenplan, which this page does not invent. The Bezirksgericht Zurich Auditorat publishes trainee pay on the same 2026 grid: CHF 55,006 on probation, CHF 71,537 in months 4 to 14, CHF 74,070 after the net year.
Which 2026 Swiss statutes actually change what a legal seat is worth?
LETA and the revised AMLA enter into force on 1 October 2026, with staggered beneficial-owner filings through 31 March 2027. The Cartel Act SIEC test and the Investment Screening Act were adopted on 19 December 2025 and are expected in force in 2027; 2026 is the ordinance year. The Federal Council’s too-big-to-fail Banking Act message of 22 April 2026 keeps Zurich bank-regulatory seats occupied through 2026 and 2027. Public takeover work is thin: the Swiss Takeover Board recorded three 2025 offers totaling about CHF 1.35 billion.
How long does Sartori take to fill a Zurich associate-line seat?
Typical time-to-fill on the Zurich associate line is 6 to 12 weeks, with a 93 percent completion rate across 16 closed searches over three years. Median offer-to-acceptance is 8 working days. Counter-offer incidence on that line is 36 percent. Of those 16 closed files, 11 were company-side in-house seats and 5 were firm-side associate seats. Dual-qualified English solicitor plus Swiss patent seats, and any brief that still asks a company to hire a “registered attorney,” run to the long end of the band.

Compensation cells come from the EPA 2026 Lohntabelle, the Canton of Zurich 2026 Lohnklassen, Legal Cheek's 2026 Firms Most List, the Biglaw Investor scale, and Swiss National Bank prints. Demand figures come from FINMA, WEKO, the Takeover Board, SIX, Chambers/KPMG and the Swiss Arbitration Centre. Credential rules come from the BGFA.

Federal and cantonal Lohnklassen are gross annual maxima or grid points at 100 percent, not salaries paid to named people. London and US locksteps measure those markets; Swiss National Bank prints convert them and are not a compensation survey. FSO Earnings Structure Survey figures are economy-wide or sector medians, not a lawyer scale. STATENT NOGA 69 counts legal, tax and audit employees together. SAV membership is voluntary and is not the full cantonal-register population. Elite Swiss firm associate CHF is unpublished and is omitted.
Our own numbers — the Zurich interview cohort, the associate-line mandate telemetry, the counter-offer incidence and the offer-to-acceptance window — come from the continuous research program described on our research page, which sets out the cohorts, the survey waves and the mapping coverage behind every Sartori figure quoted above. Method, including how city figures are built, sits on the methodology page.
