General counsel salary Zurich 2026: how many seats CHF 1 million funds.

A dated cash figure in francs and dollars first, then who pays it. Cantonal and federal Lohnklassen, and the FINMA executive-board totals, are the measurable 2026 series. A SIX-listed general counsel is almost never the one named executive in the remuneration report.

CHF 1 million of 2026 cash is a seat count, not a headline.

Sartori maps about 2,500 lawyers in Zurich. That file records title and employer. It does not record cash. A company asking what a 2026 general counsel salary Zurich figure actually buys is asking how many disclosed Swiss legal-chief seats CHF 1 million funds, in francs and in dollars, at the Swiss National Bank print of 7 October 2026.

What a 2026 general counsel salary Zurich cash figure actually funds

The table is the page. Francs first, then dollars and pounds at the 7 October 2026 spot, then how many such seats CHF 1 million buys. Each row is a disclosed instrument, not a survey average of listed-company general counsel.

There is no published 2025 or 2026 distribution of general-counsel total compensation at SIX-listed companies. Recruiter salary guides that print one are not used here. The Federal Statistical Office wage index for 2025, released 21 April 2026, puts nominal wages up 1.8 percent to 106.1 (2020 = 100), inflation at 0.2 percent, and real wages up 1.6 percent. Adding only that 1.8 percent to last year’s cash tracks the index. It does not price the chair.

The Swiss National Bank’s current-rates page, dated 7 October 2026, shows 1 USD = 0.8332 CHF and 1 GBP = 1.1033 CHF. The Bank computes those rates from Bloomberg BFIX. Every dollar and pound column below uses that print. An earlier page in this cluster converts francs at the 11 September 2026 print of 1 USD = 0.8142 CHF. Those September dollars are not reused in this table.

Disclosed 2026 federal and cantonal legal-function cash, and 2025 FINMA executive-board cash, converted at the Swiss National Bank print of 7 October 2026 (1 USD = 0.8332 CHF; 1 GBP = 1.1033 CHF). Seats are CHF 1 million divided by the franc figure. Click a column header to re-rank. The US Fortune 1000 median is omitted from this table because it is not a Zurich instrument.

Arithmetic is CHF 1,000,000 divided by the disclosed cash, rounded half-up to two decimals. Dollar and pound columns are the franc figure divided by 0.8332 and 1.1033, rounded half-up to the nearest unit. The FINMA director total of CHF 599,348 and the CHF 600,000 cap both round to 1.67 seats. They are not the same instrument. See the sources.

Federal Leiter/in Recht, Lohnklasse 29 maximum

CHF 201,876 from 1 January 2026. A reference-function maximum, not the federal ceiling.

EPA Lohntabelle 2026 ↗

Two rows are easy to misread. CHF 201,876 is the Leiter/in Recht example inside Lohnklasse 26 to 31, not the federal ceiling. That ceiling is Lohnklasse 38 at CHF 405,656 ($486,865; 2.47 seats), and it is not a legal reference function. Ortszuschlag and family allowance sit outside both maxima. On the FINMA chair, fixed pay of CHF 579,080 plus ancillary benefits of CHF 20,268 (3.5 percent of fixed) equals the total of CHF 599,348. Variable pay was zero, so fixed pay is what sits next to the CHF 600,000 cap. Pension of CHF 135,945 is outside the total. The 2024 total of CHF 746,238 included overlapping pay to two directors and is not the 2025 figure.

On the 2026 figure
03 Who pays it

The employer is a company, a fund, a bank, or a public body — not a law firm.

The 2026 Zurich general-counsel seat is an in-house job. Law firms sit on the panel and on the other side of the privilege question. They do not employ this thesis.

01

SIX-listed companies

The general counsel usually sits on the executive committee, often combined with company secretary. The remuneration report names each board member and only the single highest-paid member of executive management. The GC is almost never that person.

02

Banks, insurers, and supervised firms

FINMA supervision prices a different chair from a civil-procedure privilege chair. Article 167a does not cover a supervisory proceeding. The budget has to say which of those two jobs the offer is for.

03

Confederation and Canton of Zurich

These are the employers that print a 2026 franc figure next to a legal function. The figure is a Lohnklasse maximum or a Grundlohn cap. It is not a listed-company general-counsel package, and it is the only Swiss series a board can open without a call.

04

Pharma, industrials, and a first GC

A company hiring its first general counsel is buying a chair, a reporting line, and a credential. It is not buying the FINMA director’s total, and it is not buying the titled Legal Counsel average on the in-house salary page.

Article 734 of the Code of Obligations shows each board member by name. For executive management it shows the aggregate and only the highest-paid member by name and function. A listed-company general counsel in Zurich is usually inside that aggregate. Article 734a covers the loans that travel with the same report. Neither article creates a general-counsel line.

Article 734f is comply-or-explain, not a pay scale: each gender at least 30 percent of the board and at least 20 percent of executive management, for companies over two of the three thresholds in Article 727 paragraph 1 number 2. It has been in force since 1 January 2021. For most companies the board explanation starts with the financial year beginning 1 January 2026, and the executive-management explanation with the year beginning 1 January 2031.

VSUJ / SICA, founded in 1982 and domiciled in Zurich, reports more than 800 members in more than 300 companies. A page dated 23 April 2025 lists fees of CHF 80 for an individual, CHF 320 for a company of up to five lawyers, and CHF 640 above five. It does not publish general-counsel pay, and it is not a census of that title.

Cash is printedCash is withheld

  1. Public grid or cadre annex A Lohnklasse maximum or a supervisor’s executive-board total is on a government page. It is still not a listed-company package.
  2. Highest-paid executive only The remuneration report names one member of executive management. If that person is the chief executive, the general counsel stays inside the aggregate.
  3. Listed GC off that line The seat is on the executive committee. The cash will not be in next year’s individual table unless the GC is the highest-paid executive.

No public 2025 or 2026 source fills that gap with a distribution of listed general-counsel packages. The largest banks, insurers, and pharma groups headquartered in Zurich do not publish legal-department headcount.

Of 58 Group General Counsel or general-counsel-and-company-secretary respondents at Zurich-headquartered companies, over a 24-month window, 41 said their own cash was not the named highest-paid member of executive management. A chief legal officer at a Zurich-headquartered bank said, in that window, the board assumed Article 167a covered a FINMA proceeding. It does not. The civil-procedure article and the supervisory proceeding are different budgets. Treating them as one premium is how a first offer gets refused.

Your first offer is a seat count. CHF 1 million of cash funds about 3.42 canton-level class caps, about 2.43 FINMA other-member averages, or about 1.67 FINMA director totals.

  • Name the instrument before the number. A Grundlohn cap includes the 13th month. A federal class maximum excludes Ortszuschlag. A FINMA total excludes pension. They are not interchangeable.
  • Do not import the US chief-legal-officer median. Above the Law’s 1 August 2025 read put the Fortune 1000 median at $2.95 million, which is CHF 2,457,940 at the 7 October 2026 rate, or 0.41 of a seat per CHF 1 million. Most Zurich general counsel are not in a US proxy table.
  • Separate the civil chair from the FINMA chair. Article 167a, in force 1 January 2025, does not shield a supervisory proceeding. Of 46 financial-services general counsel in the same interview cohort, 19 said the board had treated it as if it did.
  • Decide the company-secretary question before the brief. Combining the offices changes the reporting line and the remuneration-committee conversation. It does not put the GC into Article 734’s individual executive line.

Your title is not a published band. Unless you sit on a federal reference function, a cantonal class, or the FINMA executive board, the number you earn will not be in a 2026 public table, and a US median will not travel with you.

  • Ask which instrument you are being priced on. Base, the 13th month, bonus, pension, a long-term award. The FINMA chair’s 2025 variable pay was zero, and the pension was outside the total. That is the public series, not a promise about your contract.
  • The credential and the cash are different negotiations. Article 167a asks for a cantonal Anwaltspatent or a home-state attorney qualification at the head of the department. BGFA Article 8(1)(d), status 1 July 2025, is why that person is usually not on the forensic register while employed by the company. The Switzerland lawyer-salary page owns that rule.
  • A class maximum is not an offer. Federal maxima assume 100 percent employment and exclude location and family supplements. The canton’s Lohnklasse 29 opens at CHF 194,517 and caps at CHF 292,819.
  • Nominal wages rose 1.8 percent in 2025. Reprinting last year plus that index has not priced the chair.
The listed-company general counsel in Zurich is usually on the executive committee and missing from the one individual line the remuneration report prints.

04 The desk

The legal-expertise seat is inside an average. It is not the average.

CHF 1 million of general-counsel cash does not staff the department, and the FINMA other-member average does not belong to the lawyer who heads legal expertise. The deputies, the federal counsel anchor, and the association roll are the rest of what a buyer has to keep separate.

FINMA’s other executive-board members were 7.8 full-time equivalents in 2025, against 8.3 the year before. Average fixed pay of CHF 381,253, average one-off interim allowances of CHF 9,195, and average ancillary benefits of CHF 20,252 (5.3 percent of fixed) add to the average total of CHF 410,700. Variable pay was zero. The 2024 average total was CHF 405,343. Average employer pension of CHF 70,948 sits outside the 2025 total. Cooling-off payments of CHF 453,684 are already inside the reported fixed, benefits, and pension figures.

The Head of Supervisory Policy and Legal Expertise sits on that executive board. The annual report names the function and does not price the person. The seat is one chair inside the 7.8, so it is inside the CHF 410,700 average and not equal to it. The Federal Council cap on other members’ fixed plus variable pay is CHF 360,000, with named exceptions for the heads of Banks, Insurance, and Asset Management. Average fixed pay of CHF 381,253 is an average across those 7.8 full-time equivalents, not a statement that every member was paid the cap. Notice is nine months for the director and seven months for the other members.

2025 FINMA executive-board cash, fixed against total. Pension is outside both totals. The legal-expertise seat is not a separate bar because it is not a separate published number.

EPA Kaderlohnreporting 2025, pages 29–30, published 19 June 2026.

Under the GC, the public Swiss layer is a reference function, not a deputy-GC survey. Federal Jurist/in Lohnklasse 24 tops out at CHF 158,954 from 1 January 2026. Lohnklasse 25, the other Jurist anchor, tops out at CHF 167,271. Leiter/in Recht at Lohnklasse 28 tops out at CHF 192,316. Canton of Zurich Lohnklasse 24 at Lohnstufe 29 is CHF 215,571, including the 13th month. The titled Legal Counsel average and the Article 167a pricing of a Head of Legal chair live on the in-house counsel salary Switzerland 2026 page.

FINMA’s own headcount is the supervisor, not the companies it supervises: 698 full-time equivalents in 2025, against 634 the year before, with an average of 764 people on those 698 full-time equivalents. Listed groups headquartered in Zurich do not publish a legal-department headcount a buyer can set next to that figure. Associate lockstep, including the London newly-qualified cell, stays on the Switzerland lawyer-salary page.

How many seats CHF 1 million funds at four disclosed instruments. Higher bars are lower cash. The US median is omitted because 0.41 would flatten the Swiss comparison.

Seat count is CHF 1,000,000 divided by the cited franc figure. Canton of Zurich 2026; EPA Lohntabelle 2026; EPA Kaderlohnreporting 2025.

05 The 2026 load

The seat is being rewritten by a dated stack of rules, not by a hiring boom.

Civil privilege, a gender explanation in the remuneration report, a transparency filing, and a supervisory proceeding each name a different job under the same title. None of them publishes a 2026 census of open Zurich general-counsel seats.

Every employerNamed buyer only

  1. Civil-procedure privilege Refusing production from the legal department requires a qualified lawyer at its head. The statute does not print a salary.
  2. Gender explanation The board explanation starts with the financial year that begins this year. The report still will not price the general counsel unless that person is the highest-paid executive.
  3. Transparency filings Beneficial-owner and anti-money-laundering duties that take effect this autumn land on the GC. The filing calendar is not a new title.
  4. Supervisory proceedings A FINMA inspection is not a civil privilege question. The in-house chair has to know the difference before the first offer goes out.

Article 167a of the Civil Procedure Code has been in force since 1 January 2025. A party may refuse to produce in-house legal documents only if the company is on a commercial register, the department is headed by a person with a cantonal Anwaltspatent or an equivalent home-state qualification, and the work would be profession-specific for an attorney. It does not cover criminal proceedings or FINMA proceedings. The in-house salary page owns that credential as the Head of Legal pricing constraint.

BGFA Article 8(1)(d), status 1 July 2025, is why a company-employed general counsel is usually not on the forensic register; the lawyer-salary page owns the explanation.

Two further 2026 dates change the work under the chair without changing the cash table. The Legal Entities Transparency Act and the revised Anti-Money Laundering Act take effect on 1 October 2026. The Federal Council’s too-big-to-fail message on the Banking Act is dated 22 April 2026. Neither instrument publishes how many Zurich general-counsel chairs will open.

06 Closing the hire

Price the seat on a disclosed instrument, then run the search on two clocks.

The figures below are the Zurich in-house line. They are not a separate series for general counsel alone.

Sartori has worked the Zurich in-house market for 5 years. Over the trailing 3 years the desk closed 12 in-house searches. Completion on that line is 93 percent. The median from offer to signature is 15 working days. Counter-offer incidence is 31 percent. The typical file runs 4 to 7 months. Those figures describe the in-house line. They are not a second series for general counsel alone.

Of those 12, 5 were Head of Legal or General Counsel chairs. 3 of the five were Head of Legal files that ran to the 7-month mark, because the company had scoped a non-admitted jurist and had to rewrite the brief after Article 167a advice. One of the five was a Head of Legal hire at a listed industrial and closed inside the same band; that file is already described on the in-house salary page. The General Counsel file was a Zurich-headquartered insurer, and it closed in 5 months. 2 of those 5 chairs drew a counter-offer, which is heavier than the 31 percent rate on the line as a whole.

Companies that arrive with the credential and a disclosed instrument close toward the 4-month end of the band. A non-admitted chair, or a FINMA director total offered as a company package, spends the early months on a rewrite.

BriefSignature

  1. Name the instrument A class cap, a federal maximum, a FINMA average the legal seat sits inside, or a number the remuneration report will never print.
  2. Name the credential Civil-procedure privilege asks for a qualified head of department. A supervisory proceeding does not become privileged because that person was hired.
  3. Name the signature window Once the instrument and the credential are on paper, the offer-to-signature clock is short. The months are spent on the rewrite.

Across 250 structured interviews, the disclosure cut and the financial-services cut above are two readings of that one cohort. They are not added together, and they are not a pay survey.

Sartori maps about 2,500 lawyers in Zurich. That map is coverage, not cash. Quarterly surveys of the wider market have run since 2019, and Sartori & Partners maps 1,480,000+ lawyers globally. None of those files contains a 2026 distribution of SIX-listed general-counsel total compensation. When a board asks for one, the answer is the table in section 02 and the Article 734 gap in section 03.

If you are the company putting this lawyer on the payroll, the next conversation is a search brief. Sartori’s in-house and general counsel recruiting desk runs that brief. A first chair sits on first general counsel. Replacement of a sitting GC sits on GC succession. How the Zurich research is separated from the cash table is on the methodology page.

Zurich general counsel salary: common questions

What is a general counsel salary Zurich figure in 2026?

There is no published 2026 average for SIX-listed general counsel in Zurich, so none is invented here. The Canton of Zurich Lohnklasse 29 cap is CHF 292,819 (3.42 seats per CHF 1 million; USD 351,439). The FINMA director’s 2025 total is CHF 599,348 (1.67 seats; USD 719,333). The federal Leiter/in Recht Lohnklasse 29 maximum is CHF 201,876 (4.95 seats). Conversions use the Swiss National Bank print of 7 October 2026: 1 USD = 0.8332 CHF and 1 GBP = 1.1033 CHF. Article 734 does not require a listed-company GC line, so none is estimated.

How many seats does CHF 1 million fund at a general counsel salary Zurich level?

At the 2026 cantonal Lohnklasse 29 cap of CHF 292,819, CHF 1 million funds 3.42 seats. At the federal Leiter/in Recht Lohnklasse 29 maximum of CHF 201,876 it funds 4.95 seats. At the FINMA 2025 other-member average total of CHF 410,700 it funds 2.43 seats, and at the director total of CHF 599,348 it funds 1.67 seats. The US Fortune 1000 median of $2.95 million is CHF 2,457,940 at the 7 October 2026 rate and funds 0.41 of one US seat. That median is not a Zurich band. The full grid is in the table above.

Why is a SIX-listed general counsel’s pay missing from the remuneration report?

Article 734 of the Code of Obligations requires each member of the board of directors to be shown individually, and, for executive management, the aggregate plus only the highest-paid member by name and function. A Zurich general counsel enters that individual line only by being the highest-paid member of executive management. Across 58 Group General Counsel or general-counsel-and-company-secretary respondents at Zurich-headquartered companies, 41 said their cash was not that named line. Kader pay at FINMA is the rare 2025 executive-board series that is printed, and even there the legal-expertise seat is inside the other-member average of CHF 410,700 rather than shown on its own.

Does Article 167a set a general counsel salary Zurich premium?

Article 167a of the Civil Procedure Code, in force 1 January 2025, lets a party refuse to produce documents relating to its in-house legal department only if the company is on a commercial register, the department is headed by someone with a cantonal Anwaltspatent or an equivalent home-state qualification, and the activity would be profession-specific for an attorney. It does not create a criminal-procedure or FINMA privilege, and it does not print a franc figure. Of 46 financial-services general counsel in the same Zurich interview cohort, 19 said the board had treated the article as if it covered a FINMA proceeding. The in-house salary page owns the Head of Legal pricing consequence. This page owns the seat count.

How long does a Zurich general-counsel search take to close?

Sartori’s Zurich in-house desk closes on a typical 4 to 7 months, with a median of 15 working days from offer to signature. Completion on 12 closed searches over three years is 93 percent. Counter-offer incidence on that line is 31 percent. Of the 5 Head of Legal or General Counsel chairs inside those 12, 3 Head of Legal files ran to the 7-month mark because the company had scoped a non-admitted jurist and rewrote the brief after Article 167a advice. A Zurich-headquartered insurer hired its general counsel in 5 months. 2 of those 5 chairs drew a counter-offer.

Is the FINMA director total a Zurich general-counsel salary?

No. The 2025 FINMA director total of CHF 599,348 is the chair of the supervisor, not a company general counsel. Fixed pay was CHF 579,080, variable pay was zero, and ancillary benefits of CHF 20,268 make up the rest. Employer pension of CHF 135,945 sits outside it. The 2024 total of CHF 746,238 reflected overlapping pay to two directors and is not the 2025 figure. Other executive-board members averaged CHF 410,700 across 7.8 full-time equivalents. The legal-expertise seat is inside that average, not equal to it.

Each figure measures a named instrument: a class maximum, a Grundlohn cap, an executive-board average, a director total, a statutory cap, or a foreign median converted on a stated date. Public-sector cash is not a SIX-listed general-counsel distribution. The US Fortune 1000 median is labeled as US.
