Law firm associate and NQ salary in the UK, 2026.

Two priced markets sit in one geo. Magic Circle still buys a sterling NQ lockstep of £150,000. US London offices buy £170,000 to £189,000. The dated table below is in pounds and dollars, for the solicitor who earns the figure and the partnership - or the company that later hires off it - that pays it.

The 2026 law firm associate salary UK the lockstep actually buys.

In 2026 the London associate cell still buys two NQ prints: £150,000 at Magic Circle, last reset in May 2024 and still the UK-firm ceiling as Global Legal Post recorded on 5 June 2026, and £189,000 at Quinn Emanuel from 1 July 2026. Sartori's London interview cohort (750 structured interviews) reads that split as two priced markets, not one band.

Lens 01 · Two markets One geo. Two NQ prints. Do not average them.

Global Legal Post recorded on 5 June 2026 that among UK firms the top payers remain the Magic Circle, where starting salaries for newly qualified lawyers are £150,000. Quinn Emanuel moved London NQ from £180,000 to £189,000 from 1 July 2026. £150,000 sterling. £189,000 US London.

nq salary London at the lockstep perimeter is a firm base, London office, excluding bonus unless a source says otherwise. The table is the cell the associate actually sells time into - not a UK solicitor median.

Global Legal Post, on 17 May 2024, reported Linklaters raising London NQ pay to £150,000 effective 1 May 2024, matching Freshfields, with trainee bands at £56,000 and £61,000. On 5 June 2026 the same publication recorded that Clifford Chance, A&O Shearman and Slaughter and May had subsequently matched, so the UK-firm ceiling the cell still buys is £150,000. Two priced markets sit in one geo. Averaging them is a mistake. Macfarlanes joined that print from 1 July 2026, a £10,000 rise on its 2024 level, with trainees moving to £60,000 / £65,000 from 1 September 2026 — above Magic Circle trainee bands, as Global Legal Post set out on 2 July 2026.

The US London ceiling is a different instrument. Quinn Emanuel’s 5 percent across-the-board London associate rise, first increase since mid-2024, took NQ from £180,000 to £189,000 from 1 July 2026, with 7 PQE up to £373,000, Global Legal Post reported on 5 June 2026 and The Lawyer confirmed the same day. The firm pays in pounds, not a converted New York grid. Below Quinn, Global Legal Post on 5 June and 2 July 2026 named the £180,000 NQ set as Davis Polk, Paul Weiss, Gibson Dunn and Willkie Farr; Non-Billable’s compiled table, updated 6 September 2026, still lists them there, with Davis Polk and Gibson Dunn trainees at £65,000 / £70,000. That £180,000 band had not been reported as matching Quinn’s July 5 percent as of the September table.

Associate salary London between those two ceilings is a US-firm sterling band, not a Circle mid-point. Simpson Thacher prints £178,000 NQ on the 6 September 2026 table. Skadden and Sullivan & Cromwell print £177,000. White & Case, Sidley, Goodwin and King & Spalding print £175,000. Ropes & Gray moved London NQ from £165,000 to £170,000 in March 2026, Non-Billable reported on 10 March 2026, with a hybrid bonus from 1 PQE that tops London associates and counsel to the US scale when targets are hit; Weil sits at the same £170,000 NQ on the September table. Mishcon de Reya prints £110,000, with Global Legal Post in June 2026 also noting a bonus scheme of up to 30 percent of base for exceptional performers.

On the 2026 cash
03 Who pays it

The partnership buys the lockstep. The company hires off it.

The earner of the 2026 figure is an NQ or PQE solicitor in a Magic Circle, City-independent, or US London seat. The payer is that partnership. A general counsel is a later buyer, on a later number.

Sterling lockstepIndependent pound print

  1. UK-firm lockstep A Magic Circle or City-independent partnership announces a sterling NQ and holds it. Predictable, public, and slow to move — last Circle reset May 2024.
  2. Converted New York grid A US London office applies a book rate to the US class-year scale. The cash is a conversion problem, not a UK-market problem, until someone reprints it in pounds.
  3. Independent sterling print A US London office pays pounds on its own grid, set to sit at or above the converted market. Quinn’s 2026 move is this stop, not a Circle match.

Of 33 closed London associate searches over three years, Sartori’s mandate telemetry records 21 as US-London private-equity, leveraged-finance, funds or disputes seats at 2–6 PQE, 9 as Magic Circle or City-independent NQ-to-3-PQE seats, and 3 as national-firm London or regional commercial seats. That is the buyer mix behind the table, not a wish-list. A hiring partner at a US London private-equity and leveraged-finance office told us in 2026 that the sterling print is a conversion problem: “If New York moves, we move. If Magic Circle does not, that is their retention issue.”

The desks those 21 US-London files sat on match the “known for in London” column Non-Billable printed on 6 September 2026: Kirkland on private equity, funds and restructuring; Latham on finance, private equity and capital markets; Simpson Thacher on leveraged finance, private equity and funds; Paul Weiss on private equity and leveraged finance; Davis Polk on leveraged finance and corporate M&A; Quinn Emanuel on litigation; Gibson Dunn on private equity, arbitration and energy; Sidley on leveraged finance, capital markets and corporate M&A; Weil on restructuring, private equity and leveraged finance; Milbank on finance, capital markets and energy. Those practice labels are the seats that hire NQs and 1–6 PQE associates onto the £170,000–£189,000 scale.

Magic Circle and City independents still hire across a broader lockstep — corporate, finance, disputes, real estate, tax — on one NQ cash band. A City independent that matched Magic Circle NQ from 1 July 2026 was, in the same season, advertising a Financial Services Regulatory Associate / Senior Associate, 2 to 6 years’ PQE, into a Financial Services and Products practice covering FCA and PRA applications, MiFID II, AIFMD, MAR, SM&CR, and regulatory due diligence on corporate and banking deals. That is a named 2026 hiring label at a firm on the £150,000 NQ print, and it is not a private-equity NQ seat.

Sartori maps roughly 30,000 lawyers in London. That file records admission, employer and practice label. It does not record the cash a partnership has chosen to print this year; the table above does, from the firms and the compilers. Coverage and cash are different instruments.

04 What funds it

Inbound capital, not domestic mid-market volume, is the 2026 pay cycle.

The cash in the table is funded by 2026 public-takeover value and inbound deal value, sitting on private equity, leveraged finance, funds, public M&A and disputes. A UK domestic slowdown is a different buyer, on a different scale.

The Office for National Statistics, on 1 September 2026, put inward M&A value at £25.4 billion in the second quarter of 2026, against £15.7 billion in the first quarter and £9.7 billion in the second quarter of 2025, on fewer completed inward deals (162 against 183 and 203). Domestic value was £4.2 billion on 130 deals; outward value £2.7 billion on 61. That is completed majority-control deals of £1 million and above, not announced public M&A. Capital is flowing into UK companies in fewer, larger inbound transactions — the work that pays US-firm and Magic Circle corporate, private-equity and finance associates.

Public takeover value has already passed 2025. Slaughter and May’s 2026 takeover note records that the value of firm offers in the first eight months of 2026 has already outstripped total takeover value recorded in 2025, with international bidders almost two thirds of firm offers and 92 percent of deal value. A quarter of firm offers year to date valued the target at over £1 billion, and four of those were offers over £5 billion, against none in 2025. Cash-only deals were 69 percent of firm offers year to date. Davis Polk, on 15 January 2026, set the 2025 baseline the 2026 value cycle has beaten: 57 firm offers, aggregate value over £37.8 billion (against £50 billion in 2024), UK bidders in 24 of 57, US bidders in 18 and in 7 of 11 offers over £1 billion. Takeover Code amendments from 3 February 2025 narrowed the Code’s reach; they did not freeze the 2026 value cycle.

Inward M&A value involving UK companies, quarterly. Fewer inbound deals, larger inbound capital — the work that sits under US London and Magic Circle NQ cash.

ONS, Mergers and acquisitions involving UK companies: April to June 2026, 1 September 2026.

Competition and FDI load onto the same deals. Macfarlanes, on 4 June 2026, recorded 32 CMA Phase 1 inquiries concluded in 2025/26, 22 percent down year on year, against an all-time high of 217 briefing papers. Unconditional Phase 1 clearances sat near the 2018/19 high of about 70 percent; pre-notification averaged 57 working days, down from 71. The Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 tests, in force 1 January 2025, produced a first hybrid-test catch and a first safe-harbour in 2025. The hiring label is a competition or FDI/NSI associate inside corporate and private-equity teams at Magic Circle, US London and City independents — more briefing-paper work, fewer long Phase 2 teams.

The National Security and Investment Act 2021 annual report covering 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026, published 14 July 2026, recorded 1,324 notifications (1,135 mandatory, 147 voluntary, 42 retrospective) against 1,143 the prior year. Of 1,220 reviewed notified acquisitions, 95.6 percent needed no further action; 54 were called in, plus six non-notified call-ins, for 60 total; nine final orders followed (eight with conditions, one block) against 17 the prior year. Defense accounted for 58 percent of notifications. Median time to accept a mandatory notification lengthened to 11 working days from 7. Clifford Chance, on 20 July 2026, put the final-order rate at 0.4 percent of notified acquisitions, with a median 122 calendar working days from receipt to final order on called-in deals that ended in an order. Davis Polk’s 2025 takeover recap already treated tailored CMA and NSI conditions as common, with reverse break fees in 3 of 57 firm offers in 2025.

Quotable from this cycle: inbound value is up on fewer deals, and the associate who bills it sits on the lockstep table, not on the regional one.

05 UK-wide

The same solicitor title, a different city, a different recoverability.

This page is UK-wide. It does not own the London-only associate table. Regional commercial seats, the Government Legal Department, and employment work under the Employment Rights Act 2025 are part of UK associate demand and are not the lockstep perimeter the page opens on.

HM Courts & Tribunals Service uprated solicitors’ guideline hourly rates from 1 January 2026. Grade C — other solicitors and equivalent, the NQ-to-mid associate band — is £305 an hour in London 1, £276 in London 2, £209 in London 3, £201 in National 1 and £200 in National 2. Grade B (four years and above) is £393 in London 1 against £247 in National 1 and National 2. Grade A (eight years and above) is £579 in London 1 against £295 in National 1 and £288 in National 2. London 1 is “very heavy commercial and corporate work by centrally based London firms,” not a postcode. National 1 includes Birmingham Inner, Manchester Central, Leeds Inner, Bristol, Liverpool and Cardiff Inner. This is what a costs judge will allow. It is not a salary survey. It is the cleanest public split between City recoverability and the rest of the country that does not come from a recruiter.

Guideline hourly rates from 1 January 2026, Grade C — the NQ-to-mid solicitor band the costs judge will allow. London 1 is heavy commercial work by centrally based London firms, not a postcode.

HMCTS, Solicitors' guideline hourly rates, updated 1 January 2026.

Solicitor salary London at national firms is already a step off the lockstep; outside London the step is larger. The 6 September 2026 compiled table prints Weightmans NQ at £70,000 and Burges Salmon at £76,000 in Bristol — the one non-London print on that page. Those regional commercial seats hire associate and solicitor titles into corporate, real estate, employment and banking. They are UK associate demand. They are not the £150,000–£189,000 perimeter.

The Government Legal Department is the public-body buyer of qualified solicitors, and it is growing outside London. GOV.UK news on 18 June 2026 put GLD at 3,900 lawyers and legal professionals, with staff outside London up 22 percent year on year and offices in Leeds, Manchester, Bristol and Croydon expanding. The 2026–27 plan names Employment Rights Act implementation, the Renters’ Rights Act 2025, the Commonhold and Leasehold Reform Bill, the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill, a Financial Services Bill covering crypto and stablecoin, the Railways Bill, and the US/UK Economic Prosperity Deal. That is a measured in-house public hiring desk. It does not pay Magic Circle NQ. Grade 7 lawyer pay advertised on job boards is not used here.

Employment is a 2026 demand label because of the Employment Rights Act 2025, mostly at national and regional firms and inside GLD, not at the US private-equity lockstep. Acas, last updated 2 September 2026, records that the Act became law on 18 December 2025, with changes phased through 2026 and 2027. The GOV.UK timeline puts employment-tribunal time limits moving from three months to six months on 1 October 2026 (Scotland contract claims 9 November 2026); union workplace access, the duty to tell workers of the right to join a union, and the “all reasonable steps” sexual-harassment duty on 30 October 2026; and the unfair-dismissal qualifying period moving from two years to six months, with uncapped compensation, from 1 January 2027. Pinsent Masons Out-Law, on 1 September 2026, notes that the unfair-dismissal change applies to dismissals on or after 1 January 2027, so in practice to staff engaged from about 1 July 2026. US London offices that list private equity and leveraged finance as their calling card do not list employment as one.

Ireland and Scotland sit next door with different rolls. This page’s credential gate is solicitor of England and Wales. Their pay tables are not explained here.

Against all of this, the Office for National Statistics Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings, published 23 October 2025, put median gross annual earnings for full-time employees in post for at least a year at £39,039 in the pay period including 30 April 2025, against £37,439 in April 2024. City NQ of £150,000 to £189,000 sits roughly four to five times that all-employee median. That is context for the earner and the payer, not a solicitor occupation median — Table 14.7a was not opened.

06 How NQs arrive

SQE is now 40 percent of admissions. It does not cut the lockstep.

nq solicitor salary is still a practicing-certificate number. How the solicitor arrived - LPC and a training contract, or SQE and qualifying work experience - changed in 2026. What Magic Circle and US London pay them did not move with that mix.

How they qualifyWho pays them

  1. Credential gate Degree or equivalent, SQE1 and SQE2 or the remaining LPC route, two years of qualifying work experience or a period of recognized training, character, then a practicing certificate.
  2. NQ lockstep A Magic Circle, City-independent or US London partnership buys that certificate onto a published base. The mix of routes does not split the cash band.
  3. Later buyer A general counsel, chief legal officer or head of legal hires the same solicitor at 2–8 PQE off the lockstep, onto an internal band the partnership never printed.

The Solicitors Regulation Authority routes-to-admission table for August 2025 to July 2026 records 9,944 admissions: LPC plus a period of recognized training 5,391 (54 percent); SQE 4,019 (40 percent); Ireland exempt 162; CILEX and assistant justices’ clerk 168; equivalent means 130; Northern Ireland exempt 71. The prior year, August 2024 to July 2025, totalled 9,665, with LPC at 6,243 (65 percent) and SQE at 2,933 (30 percent). The SQE share jumped ten percentage points in one year. The NQ supply the cell hires from is still majority training-contract and LPC. Both pipelines are live.

Behind that share: the SRA, on 21 April 2026, reported that in the 2024/25 academic year 13,081 candidates sat one or more SQE1 FLK papers, with a January 2025 SQE1 pass rate of 56 percent and a July 2025 pass rate of 41 percent (against 44 percent in July 2024); 5,752 sat SQE2, with the overall SQE2 pass rate rising from 76 percent to 81 percent. Fees from September 2026 are SQE1 £2,006 and SQE2 £3,086. On 29 January 2026 the SRA put cumulative passers since introduction at 19,281 for SQE1 and 10,718 for SQE2, with overall pass rates of 66.1 percent and 84.5 percent; apprentices outperformed at about 71 percent and 93 percent. That sizes the qualifying pipeline. It does not price City NQ.

The SRA SQE-candidate page, updated March 2025, still sequences the gate: degree or equivalent; pass SQE1 and SQE2; two years’ full-time (or equivalent) qualifying work experience; character and suitability; then admission and a practicing certificate. Qualifying work experience, on the SRA page updated 26 January 2024, can be in a law firm, an in-house legal team, a law clinic, or up to four organizations, must be real legal services covering at least two Statement of Solicitor Competence items, and must be confirmed by an England-and-Wales solicitor or COLP. US firms that hire NQs into London still need that practicing certificate for reserved activity. Some run a UK training contract; some, as with a 2026 private-equity program whose NQ sits at £178,000 on the September table, run an SQE-era specialized pathway. Paul Weiss is launching a London training contract in October 2026, Non-Billable recorded on the same table. Ropes & Gray already runs a 24-trainee London contract, noted with its March 2026 NQ move. Qualified-foreign-lawyer transfer remains a small slice: QLTS/QLTT rows are 2 and 1 in the year to July 2026.

The practicing population is still rising; firm count is falling. The SRA population page records 214,080 solicitors on the roll at the end of June 2026. The Costs statement of 16 July 2026 put 176,972 practicing solicitors at 31 October 2025, up 3.3 percent on the previous year, alongside 7,568 registered foreign lawyers. Of the July 2026 head-office mix, 5,242 were incorporated companies, 1,418 LLPs, 900 partnerships, 1,329 sole practitioners and 28 other. The associate market is not a shrinking profession. It is a shrinking firm population with more practicing certificates concentrated in larger platforms. Practicing-fee income was £72.1 million in 2024/25 against £68.1 million; that is a cost on every practicing associate, not a hiring freeze, and not a 2026/27 individual fee — the statement does not print one.

07 Two readers

What the earner does with the number, and what the payer does.

Sartori has worked the London associate market for more than ten years. Over the trailing three years the desk closed 33 associate searches at a 93 percent completion rate, on a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks and a median 12 working days from offer to acceptance.

Counter-offer incidence on this line is 35 percent. On 8 of the 11 completed files that drew one, the candidate still left. That is the number that keeps the rest honest: incumbent partnerships match, and still lose, when the competing print is a US London sterling figure the UK lockstep will not reprint. Of the 21 US-London files, 6 stalled past the 12-week mark because the hiring committee would not reprint a sterling number after the 1 July 2026 US scale moved, and two of those six were withdrawn rather than filled. The 6-to-12-week typical timeline did not hold on those six. We now brief both the partnership and the candidate on that basis rather than on the headline band.

A general counsel at a private-equity-backed UK portfolio company told us they budget a 4-PQE legal counsel seat against the internal band, not against Quinn’s NQ: “I am not matching a disputes boutique. I am hiring someone who has already done two years of the work.” Inside the same interview cohort, 47 of 71 general counsel and heads of legal at UK banks, sponsors and listed corporates over a 24-month window said they will not price a 3–6 PQE in-house hire against the Magic Circle NQ print. Nineteen of those 47 said a candidate who opened with the firm lockstep as a floor walked. The company that hires off the lockstep is not flattered by the table, and neither is the candidate who treats it as a transferable floor.

Sartori’s quarterly survey since 2019 recorded, in the 2026 Q2 wave, that 54 of 82 London associates sitting in US offices described their cash as a converted New York figure rather than as a UK lockstep. That is the conversion stop on the spectrum above, in the associates’ own words, from a survey wave rather than from the interview cohort.

Three anonymized composites, consistent with that envelope. A US London private-equity and leveraged-finance office briefed a 4-PQE associate seat in the second quarter of 2026, after the US scale had moved and before a sterling reprint was agreed. The file closed in 9 weeks. The incumbent Magic Circle partnership matched on cash and lost on the converted ceiling. A City independent financial-services regulatory practice briefed a 2-to-6 PQE associate into a products seat covering FCA and PRA work; the file closed in 8 weeks on the £150,000 NQ lockstep the firm had just matched, with no US print in play. A listed UK corporate legal department briefed a 5-PQE Legal Counsel hire off a Magic Circle corporate seat; the file closed in 11 weeks on the company band. The general counsel would not open at Circle NQ, and the candidate who wanted that floor dropped out in week four.

You are selling time into a published base. Name which base, in which currency, before you name a firm.

  • Read the as-of date. A September compilation that still shows an old dollar conversion is not a 1 July raise.
  • Treat two offers as two offers. Sterling lockstep and converted New York are not a band. Inside that cohort, 124 of 198 NQ-to-4-PQE solicitors already did.
  • Do not carry NQ as a floor in-house. The company buyer prices an internal band. Opening with Circle NQ is how 19 of 47 general counsel described a walk-out.
  • Watch the acceptance clock. Median offer-to-acceptance on this line is 12 working days. A competing print that needs a committee reprint will miss it.
  • Credential first. England-and-Wales practicing certificate, two years of qualifying work experience or recognized training. Scotland and Northern Ireland are different rolls.

You are either a partnership buying NQ cash, or a general counsel hiring off it. Those are different cheques.

  • Name the print in the brief. Circle sterling, US conversion, or independent pound grid. A requisition that says “lockstep” without saying which one produces a shortlist that cannot close.
  • Budget the stall. Six of 21 US-London files ran past 12 weeks when the committee would not reprint after 1 July 2026. Two were withdrawn. The 6-to-12-week band is the typical, not the stressed, case.
  • Price the counter-offer first. Incidence on this line is 35 percent. Incumbents match and still lose when the competing print is a US London figure. Decide in advance whether you will match, and to which scale.
  • If you are the company, do not match NQ. Forty-seven of 71 general counsel in that cohort already refuse to. Write the internal band. Hire 2–8 PQE off the lockstep, not onto it.
  • Employment and GLD are other desks. ERA 2025 commencements in October 2026 and January 2027 hire employment solicitors at national firms and inside GLD. They are not a reason to raise a US private-equity NQ.

Common questions about 2026 UK associate and NQ cash

What is law firm associate salary UK in 2026?

At the lockstep perimeter, £150,000 NQ at Magic Circle and the City independents that match it, and £170,000 to £189,000 at US London offices. Global Legal Post recorded the Circle still at £150,000 on 5 June 2026, last reset in May 2024. Quinn Emanuel prints £189,000 from 1 July 2026. National London NQ on Non-Billable’s 6 September 2026 table runs from £100,000 to £120,000. Those are three markets. Averaging them is a mistake the earner and the payer both pay for.

Who actually pays the 2026 NQ lockstep?

A law-firm partnership, not a company legal department, pays the £150,000 to £189,000 NQ print. The £150,000 band is Magic Circle plus Macfarlanes from 1 July 2026; the £170,000–£189,000 band is US London offices in private equity, leveraged finance, funds, public M&A and disputes. In-house teams at banks, sponsors and listed corporates hire 2–8 PQE laterals off those firms. They do not publish an NQ lockstep in that band, and Sartori’s 33 closed London associate files over three years include none that were in-house newly-qualified seats.

How does nq salary London compare with the US first-year scale?

At Non-Billable’s stated £1 = $1.29 book, Magic Circle NQ of £150,000 converts to about $193,500, more than $40,000 below the US first-year base of $235,000 from 1 July 2026. Quinn’s £189,000 converts to about $243,810, above that US floor. The £180,000 club converts to about $232,200, just under it. Those dollar figures are derived, not firm-printed. The US class-year ladder itself is the 2026 Milbank/market scale.

Does solicitor salary London include national and regional firms?

On the 6 September 2026 table, London national-firm NQ runs from £100,000 to £120,000. Addleshaw Goddard prints £100,000; CMS and Eversheds Sutherland print £120,000; Pinsent Masons prints £109,000. Weightmans prints £70,000; Burges Salmon prints £76,000 in Bristol. HMCTS guideline hourly rates from 1 January 2026 price London 1 Grade C at £305 against National 1 Grade C at £201. Same solicitor title. Different cash.

How long does a UK associate search take, and what does a counter-offer do to it?

Sartori’s London associate desk typically closes in 6 to 12 weeks at a 93 percent completion rate. That is 33 closed searches over three years, with a median 12 working days from offer to acceptance. Counter-offer incidence on this line is 35 percent. On 8 of the 11 completed files that drew one, the candidate still left. The six US-London files that stalled after the 1 July 2026 US scale moved ran past the 12-week mark; two of those six were withdrawn.

Should a company match Magic Circle NQ when hiring a 3-PQE in-house?

No. Of 71 general counsel in that London cohort over 24 months, 47 refused to price a 3-PQE in-house hire against Magic Circle NQ. They price against an internal band. A candidate who opens with the firm lockstep as a floor is arguing with a different buyer. The company that hires off the lockstep is not the partnership that paid it.
