Law Firm Partner Compensation in Australia 2026
Zero 2026 Sydney or Melbourne equity or salaried partner-pay cells are public. What is dated is headcount, two global PEP averages, and an NSW income texture that mixes employees with principals — in AUD and USD, for who earns the row and who pays it.
Four 2026 cells. All of them empty.
Sydney is the densest Australian partner market we cover, and the 2026 public file below is empty on pay: zero Sydney or Melbourne equity or salaried AUD cells. Sartori maps approximately 6,500 lawyers in Sydney.
A writer looking for a 2026 Australian Financial Review, law-society, WGEA, ASX or firm-announcement table that states equity drawings by city will not find one in the primary record. Recruiter salary guides that print those bands are not used here. Measured absence, not an estimate.
USD conversions on this page use the Reserve Bank of Australia 11 September 2026 rate of 0.7172. The public file that does exist sits below.

Companies searching for law firm partner salary Australia usually call once a board, a compensation committee or a candidate has seen a global PEP print, a NSW solicitor average, or a recruiter band and treated it as a 2026 Sydney offer. None of those three numbers is a city drawings cell. The public 2026 file is a headcount file. The partner who will earn the figure, and the firm leadership or general counsel who will pay it, need the same inventory of what is dated and what is missing.
A managing partner pricing a salaried seat and a general counsel reading the invoice behind it are asking the same missing question from opposite sides of the table. The partner wants to know whether the 2026 title is equity or a contract. The general counsel wants to know whether the firm just expanded the people who earn from the pool, or the people who bill the company. Neither question is answered by a PEP print from another hemisphere, and neither is answered by a census band that folds graduates into principals.
Zero 2026 Sydney or Melbourne partner-pay cells are public. Headcount is.
The 2026 law firm partner salary Australia file is a headcount file.
The AFR survey, the top-eight stock, two global PEP averages and an NSW income texture that mixes employees with principals: that is the public record. It is not a city wage table.

- Headcount and status mix Additions, partnership stock, salaried versus equity as a qualitative share. Title events, not wages.
- Global PEP averages Firm-wide profit per equity partner in USD or sterling. A pool average, not a city drawing.
- City drawings and salaried wages Sydney versus Melbourne, equity versus contract. The four cells this page is asked to fill, and cannot.
On 25 June 2026 The Australian Financial Review reported that surveyed firms added 299 new partners in the six months to July 2026, the largest such cohort since at least 2020, and that three-quarters of the country’s law partnerships either grew or held steady. Drivers named in the same articles: litigation, increased regulatory pressure, and AI-related advice. A 26 June 2026 recap of that survey recorded a record share of those new seats as salaried rather than equity. Do not treat 299 as a national stock of partners. It is a gross-additions figure for participating firms.
The prior-year comparator sits in the same newspaper. On 3 July 2025 the AFR reported the first-half 2025 Law Partnership Survey: partner numbers rose by 50 in the six months to July 2025 (1 percent), and there were 83 more partners than a year earlier at firms with comparable data (about 2 percent). Demand named then: corporate disputes, energy transition, infrastructure. The 2026 print is larger on title, not more revealing on pay.
| Firm (AFR 2026 survey cell) | Partners 2026 | Female partners | Female % 2026 | Female % 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MinterEllison | 239 | 85 | 35.6 | 36.3 |
| Ashurst Perkins Coie | 196 | 90 | 45.9 | 46.1 |
| Mallesons | 192 | 77 | 40.1 | 36.2 |

The eight cells sum to 1,431. The International Bar Association Raising the Bar Australia results (2026) cite the 2025 AFR survey: women were 36 percent of partners at the 56 firms surveyed. That is a prior-year gender stock, still not a wage.
King & Wood Mallesons 2025 Global 100 PEP
About A$540,000. Point Blank, citing the 2025 Global 100, 2 October 2025, flags the verein distortion.
Point Blank, 2 October 2025 ↗The Law Society of NSW 2025 Annual Profile of Solicitors, census 30 June 2025, put 10,484 partner or principal solicitors in private practice, 35 percent of 29,818 private-practice solicitors. Fifty percent of private-practice solicitors sat in the Sydney CBD. In the 2025-26 Practising Certificate Survey, 6 percent of private-practice solicitors reported FY23-24 gross income over A$500,000; 7 percent reported A$300,001 to 500,000; 13 percent preferred not to say. Average income that year was A$194,987 in private practice against A$235,439 in the corporate sector and A$152,978 in government. Those averages mix graduates through principals. A compensation committee that prices a 2026 partner offer off the private-practice average is pricing a different job.
The October 2024 National Profile of Solicitors counted 97,500 practicing solicitors: NSW 41,304 (42 percent), Victoria 24,301 (25 percent), Queensland 15,158 (16 percent). Seventy-nine practices with 21 or more principals — 34 in NSW, 30 in Victoria — employed 21 percent of solicitors. All 40-or-more-principal practices sat in NSW (16), Victoria (17) or Queensland. The 2026 partner-pay question lives in that large-practice tail. It is not answered by the tail.
Ashurst’s own Annual Business Report FY25, dated June 2025, is the one Australian-rooted global that prints a firm PEP in sterling rather than leaving it to the Global 100: revenue GBP 1.034 billion, first time over a billion, up 8 percent from FY24’s GBP 961 million; PEP GBP 1.390 million against GBP 1.336 million the year before; 32 strategic partner hires and 20 partner promotions in FY25; Australia revenue up 11 percent; female partners 35 percent globally. That is a FY25 firm report. Converted at the 11 September 2026 RBA cross it becomes about A$2.62 million. It is still not a Sydney drawing, and it is still not a salaried wage.
Thomson Reuters Institute’s 2024 Australia State of the Legal Market, covering the financial year ended 30 June 2024 across 20 participating Australian firms, recorded average demand +7.5 percent, fees-worked +12.6 percent, average firm total profit +19.0 percent and equity-partner profits +18.0 percent year on year. Non-equity partners, defined there as compensation under 50 percent equity, grew 14.1 percent over two years since 2022 against overall headcount +8.3 percent. A decade earlier equity partners were 18 percent of lawyers in the typical large Australian firm; later 13 percent in the 2014-2024 mix. The salaried row has been growing as a class for years. The 2026 AFR survey made the title mix visible. It still did not price the row.
The 2025 edition of that Thomson Reuters report, released 26 August 2025, is the competitive frame behind the 2026 midyear numbers. Lawyers Weekly, quoting it on 27 August 2025, put Large-firm demand at +5.4 percent in FY25 against Big 8 +1 percent; Large-firm transactional demand +5.7 percent against Big 8 +1.4 percent; Large-firm counter-cyclical +7.6 percent against Big 8 −2.8 percent. Half of Australia’s top 10 firms by profit per equity partner now sit in the Large category. The dollar PEP still does not print. The growth split does: the firms outside the traditional eight have been compounding profit per lawyer faster, which is why a 2026 partner conversation that only names the eight is already looking at the wrong payor set.
The partner takes the row. The general counsel funds it.
Equity drawings and a salaried wage are different instruments, paid by different entities. The in-house buyer who instructs the firm does not see either number on a public file.
The earnerThe payer
- Equity partner Takes drawings from the profit pool. WGEA excludes those earnings. No 2026 city cell.
- Salaried partner An employee on a contract. WGEA includes the wage. Still no published dollar.
- General counsel and the firm The GC pays the invoice. The firm as employer pays the salaried row. The equity pool pays itself.
The 2026 Australian partner who earns the figure sits on a law-firm seat, not in a general-counsel office.
NSW’s 30 June 2026 practicing-certificate census put 10,727 principals of a law practice against 9,042 corporate and 5,205 government certificate-holders, on a total of 45,208. Employees of a law practice were 20,140. Location: 21,872 City; 14,835 Suburban (Sydney). Partner is a private-practice title. Year-on-year, principals rose from 10,485 on 30 June 2025; total certificates rose from 43,620. “Principal” includes sole practitioners and is not a top-tier equity count. Firm-type split on the same census: law firm 7,212, incorporated legal practice 12,874, unincorporated legal practice 3,007, sole practitioners 3,538, corporate and non-lawyer entity 8,461, government 5,147.
Inside the Sydney interview cohort, 72 equity and salaried partners at Australian top-tier and Large-segment firms over a 24-month window: 49 said they could not name a public 2026 Sydney drawings figure for their own status. The same cohort is the only interview count on this page. Title is visible. Take-home is not.
A managing partner at a Large-segment Australian firm told us they added salaried partners in the first half of 2026 to hold title without widening the equity pool, and they will not publish the wage. That is the 2026 status mix in one sentence: more names on the card, a smaller set of people paying the equity row.
The organization that pays the figure is either the equity pool or the firm as employer. The organization that funds the pool is the buyer of partner time.
Of 61 sitting general counsel, group general counsel and heads of legal at ASX-listed and multinational corporates in that same 24-month window, 38 said they price partner time by hourly rate and matter budget, not by profit per equity partner. A general counsel at an ASX-listed energy company put it without decoration: they are not paying PEP; they are paying invoices that fund it.
The in-house buyer anatomy is public even though partner pay is not. The Law Society of NSW 2025 Annual Profile, from the 2025-26 Practising Certificate Survey of the corporate legal sector (survey base 3,433), recorded self-described roles: group general counsel 203 (6 percent); head of legal team 347 (10 percent); general counsel 373 (11 percent); senior lawyer or senior legal counsel 1,253 (37 percent); lawyer or legal counsel 916 (27 percent); graduate 69 (2 percent). Location of corporate solicitors on the 30 June 2025 database (n=8,742): Sydney CBD 44 percent, suburban 39 percent. Full-time share 83 percent. Those people instruct partners. They do not hold the partner title, and the Uniform Law does not give them a principal certificate unless they are the sole counsel supervising others.
Thomson Reuters’ 22 February 2026 midyear update recorded Australian general counsel at net 0 on expected overall legal spend — as many expect spend up as down — while looking more to Asia-Pacific and Latin America than to Europe. The 27 August 2026 full-year edition interviewed 109 Australian-based legal buyers across 27 participating firms. The buyer is not blind. The buyer is not looking at a partner-pay table, because there is not one.
The Commonwealth is a contracted buyer on a different clock. The Whole of Australian Government Legal Services Panel (SON4072331) runs 1 July 2024 to 30 June 2027, with two one-year extension options to 30 June 2029. AusTender listed 50 current suppliers when accessed in 2026. The Legal Services Directions 2025 commenced 2 March 2026. Panel work pays partner hours in public law, workplace relations, corporate and commercial, and property and environment. It does not publish partner pay.
| Status | Who earns it | Who pays it | WGEA 2026 treatment | 2026 city AUD cell |

| Equity partner | Drawings / profit share | The equity pool | Excluded | None |
| Salaried partner | Employment contract | The firm as employer | Included | None |
Practice structure changes who the employer is. The Law Society Journal, 11 June 2026, sets out five Uniform Law structures: sole practitioner, law firm (partnership), community legal service, incorporated legal practice, unincorporated legal practice. In an ILP the company is the employer; at least one director must be an authorized principal. The NSW census already shows more solicitors in ILPs than in “law firm.” Many partner-level people are employed by companies. That is the WGEA salaried-partner split in the registry.
The credential gate to the title is statutory, not commercial. In NSW, a partner of a law firm must hold a principal practicing certificate: Condition 2 (generally 24 months of supervised legal practice, or 18 months if admission was via articles; the condition is not auto-removed), Condition 3 (an accredited Practice Management Course), and approved professional indemnity insurance from Lawcover before the certificate issues. Overseas practice does not count on a standard s 49 application. July 2026 partnership-checklist providers for the accredited course: Law Society of NSW, College of Law, FMRC, UNSW EDGE. New partnerships that provide designated services under the AML/CTF Act must enroll with AUSTRAC. Victoria, on a VLSB+C page last updated 31 August 2026, requires an approved Practice Management Course for a first principal certificate, or after a gap of more than three years in ten. Those gates decide who may be called partner. They do not print what that partner earns.
Gender texture is public in the same files that withhold pay. The 2025 Annual Profile put the female share of private-practice partner or principal roles at 25 percent, against 46 percent of males in private practice in that role. The IBA figure of 36 percent female partners at 56 firms is a top-tier survey stock from 2025, not a wage and not the whole principal census. WGEA can see the salaried row’s gap and cannot see the equity row at all. A compensation committee that treats the gender-pay file as a partner table is reading the wrong instrument.
The general counsel who pays the invoice does not see the drawings.
A statute stack, not an M&A boom, is minting 2026 partner seats.
Mandatory merger control, AML Tranche 2, climate disclosure, workplace relations and a cash rate back at 4.35 percent shifted hours inside the partnership. Firms still promoted M&A partners as M&A hours contracted.
1 January 20261 July 2026
- Mandatory merger control ACCC notification is suspensory. Competition partners in Sydney and Melbourne take the first-wave filings.
- Directions 2025 and climate Group 2 Commonwealth panel rules from early March. Sustainability reports for the next-tier reporters from 1 July.
- AML Tranche 2 Law practices providing designated services enroll with AUSTRAC. A compliance officer at management level, often a partner.
The Treasury Laws Amendment (Mergers and Acquisitions Reform) Act 2024 made ACCC notification mandatory and suspensory from 1 January 2026. Thresholds: combined Australian revenue of at least A$200 million plus target Australian revenue of A$50 million or global transaction value of A$250 million; or acquirer-group Australian revenue of A$500 million plus target of A$10 million; extra rules for Coles and Woolworths supermarket and land deals. The ACCC expects around 80 percent of decisions in 15 to 20 business days. The instructing general counsel sits in those large corporates and funds. The earner is a law-firm competition partner, often salaried first.
AUSTRAC obligations for lawyers providing Table 6 designated services commenced 1 July 2026, with enrollment from 31 March 2026, as the Law Society of NSW set out on 25 February 2026 and AUSTRAC restated on a page updated 10 July 2026. Reporting entities must appoint an AML compliance officer who is an Australian resident, fit and proper, and at management level. Litigation that only looks backward is generally out; implementing a share sale or loan is in. That is a new partner-level compliance seat inside firms. It does not, by itself, raise equity PEP.
Group 2 climate reporters under AASB S2 and Corporations Act s 292A enter from financial years beginning 1 July 2026; Group 1 already reports for years beginning on or after 1 January 2025; Group 3 follows on 1 July 2027. The Fair Work Ombudsman, on a page updated 26 August 2025, confirmed the right to disconnect for small-business employees from that date. Thomson Reuters’ H1 FY2026 update put workplace-relations demand at +9.9 percent, overall demand +4.8 percent and worked rates +4.7 percent; corporate general +7.7 percent. ASIC recorded 14,722 companies entering external administration for the first time in 2024-25, up 33.2 percent from 11,053. The Reserve Bank of Australia raised the cash-rate target three times in 2026, to 4.35 percent from 6 May, and the Monetary Policy Board held it there on 11 August 2026, with inflation not expected back to midpoint until late 2027. M&A hours in the same Thomson Reuters print were −2.1 percent; insolvency and restructuring +7.9 percent. Non-equity partners recorded a third consecutive productivity decline; senior associates and equity partners logged more hours. The 10 heaviest technology and knowledge-management spenders invested close to A$30 million each, per the 27 August 2026 full-year edition.
FIRB remains a live screening clock, not a 2027 story. Treasury’s quarterly report for 1 April to 30 June 2025, published in 2026, recorded 326 commercial proposals approved, value A$49.3 billion; US A$11.1 billion, Japan A$9.2 billion; mineral exploration and development A$19.3 billion, services A$11.1 billion, commercial real estate A$10.1 billion. A May 2026 Treasury paper floated a 30-day target for low-risk applications from 1 January 2027. Allens, on 19 May 2026, noted no exposure draft and called enactment before late 2026 unlikely. Do not hire against a 2027 target that is not yet law. The current Act is what occupies foreign-investment and energy-and-minerals partners in Sydney, and Perth for resources, this year.
Enforcement sits under the same twelve months. The ACCC and AER annual report, published 15 October 2025, assessed 323 merger matters in the year ended 30 June 2025 (307 the year before), with 34 public reviews, 17 court cases commenced, and a record cartel penalty of A$57.5 million. HSF Kramer’s Australian round put three of ten new partners into disputes, with demand named for securities, consumer, employment and cyber class actions. The Privacy Amendment (Personal Data Protection) Bill 2026 is still consultation: the Attorney-General’s exposure draft landed 31 August 2026, consult to 18 September 2026. Tranche 1 is in force. Tranche 2 is not a 2026 hiring surge until it is enacted.
Promotion rounds make the live practice labels explicit without printing a wage. Allens announced 16 new partners effective 1 July 2026, on 22 April 2026: eight in Sydney, five in Melbourne, three in Perth, one in Brisbane, across M&A and capital markets, disputes, competition, funds and super, TMT, tax, IP, real estate and projects. HSF Kramer promoted 10 Australians effective 1 May 2026 — 10 of 25 worldwide, the largest Australian round in three years — with three of ten in disputes and four in projects, energy and infrastructure, per Australasian Lawyer on 22 April 2026. The AFR the same day recorded Ashurst appointing 9 Australians, half of 18 elevations. Title is being minted in disputes, energy, competition, funds, IR and finance even as M&A hours contract.

Transatlantic combinations change who pays PEP without publishing Australian drawings. Reuters, 2 June 2025: Herbert Smith Freehills and Kramer Levin combined effective 1 June 2025, about 2,700 lawyers, over US$2 billion revenue. Perkins Coie and Ashurst partner votes on 13 April 2026 approved Ashurst Perkins Coie, about US$2.8 billion, around 3,000 lawyers, with Sydney named as a hub and close expected in the third quarter of 2026. The Australian King & Wood Mallesons partnership relaunched as Mallesons in April 2026. Australian equity holders now sit in, or compete with, US-scale profit pools. That is a pay-structure shock. It is not a 2026 Sydney cell.
PwC Australia’s M&A Outlook 2026, 23 February 2026, put 2025 deal value at US$79.5 billion across 1,285 deals (both down 8 percent year on year), inbound 45 percent of value (from 30 percent), private-equity buyouts US$30.5 billion across 95 deals (value up 32 percent), Australian listings 67 to 92, and energy, utilities and resources 46 percent of headline value (from 25 percent). Ashurst’s Australian Public M&A Deal Report 2026 counted 40 binding public deals of A$50 million or more announced in 2025 (43 in 2024), aggregate value A$38.7 billion (A$45.3 billion in 2024), eight mega-deals over A$1 billion, private-capital bidders 33 percent by number. At the 11 September 2026 RBA rate, A$38.7 billion is US$27.8 billion. The Takeovers Panel’s 2024-25 annual report recorded 35 applications and an average 20.5 calendar days from application to decision. Dual clocks with the ACCC and FIRB stretch close timetables. Public M&A remains a partner product. It is not a volume boom that fills a pay table.
How a Sydney partner search actually prices.
We have worked the Sydney partner market for five years, for Australian top-tier and Large-segment firms and for the corporates that instruct them. Over the trailing three years we closed 13 partner searches with a 93 percent completion rate and a typical timeline of 4 to 7 months.
Of those 13 closed Sydney partner searches over three years, 8 were disputes, competition, energy and infrastructure or industrial-relations seats, and 5 were M&A, funds or finance. Sartori’s Sydney partner mandate telemetry records a 39 percent counter-offer incidence across the 13, and a median of 14 working days from offer to signature. Quarterly surveys of this market have run since 2019; the global research program maps nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles.
Four of the 13 closed files ran past the seven-month end of our typical window. All four were seats where the instructing firm had not decided whether the person would be equity or salaried before the shortlist went out. The market was not the delay. The status was. That is the number on this page that does not flatter the method: we place slowly when the brief still treats “partner” as one job.
Sartori’s Sydney mapping records partner title and employer. It does not record drawings. No public register does. A search priced off a guessed city band is a search priced off a cell we cannot see either.
Salaried disputes seat, top-tier Australian partnership. A Sydney disputes group needed a salaried partner with class-action and regulatory-investigation range after H1 2026 title expansion left origination thin. Scope was securities, consumer and cyber work. Brief to offer ran five months, inside the window. The incumbent counter-offered; the 39 percent city rate showed up as a retention conversation, not as a matching PEP print, because there was not one. Signature in 14 working days. Outcome: accepted, salaried, equity unopened.
Competition partner, transatlantic global, Sydney hub. A combined transatlantic firm needed a competition partner who could run mandatory ACCC filings from 1 January 2026. The buyer on the other side of the invoice was an ASX acquirer clearing the A$200 million combined-revenue test. Four months. Status: high salaried, with an equity conversation parked until the first full notification year. Outcome: accepted. The delay that did not happen was the one firms invent when they wait for a public wage cell.
Energy and infrastructure, Large-segment Australian firm. A projects seat covering energy-market reform and unlisted infrastructure vehicles. The firm opened the brief as equity, moved it to salaried after the compensation committee declined to widen the pool, and the file paused. It closed at seven months once status was written down. The candidate still had to hold a principal practicing certificate. The delay was the brief, not the credential.
How to read the 2026 offer — and how to write it.
The same empty cells serve the partner who will earn the figure and the firm or general counsel who will pay it. PEP is not take-home. Title is not equity. An invoice is not a wage.
What gets printedWhat the partner takes
- Global PEP A firm-wide average across an equity pool. Useful as a ceiling proxy. Useless as a Sydney offer.
- Salaried contract A wage the firm pays as employer. In the WGEA file. Still not in a 2026 city table.
- Equity drawings Profit share. Private. The cell candidates ask for and firms will not publish.
A candidate comparing an Australian partner offer to a US PEP print, or to a lockstep drawing in another city, is comparing different instruments. The 2025 Global 100 pair — Herbert Smith Freehills at US$1.83 million, Ashurst at US$1.7 million — averages a worldwide equity pool. Ashurst’s own FY25 PEP of GBP 1.390 million converts, at the 11 September 2026 RBA cross, to about A$2.62 million or US$1.88 million, and that conversion is a 2026 FX event applied to a FY25 sterling figure. None of those numbers is a Sydney drawing. A salaried offer is a wage. An equity offer is a share of a pool whose denominator just changed, for two of the globals, by a transatlantic combination.
A company writing the offer — a managing partner, a compensation committee, a general counsel instructing a panel firm, a head of legal who needs to know what the other side of the invoice costs — should put three things on one page before a number. First, status: equity or salaried, written down, not implied by the word partner. Second, the practice the 2026 tape is actually hiring: disputes, competition, energy and infrastructure, funds, IR, finance and restructuring, not a generic corporate seat. Third, the conversion rate if anyone is still thinking in dollars: 0.7172 on 11 September 2026, labeled as a dated RBA print. In-house counsel recruiting for the buyer seat, and partner recruiting for the earner seat, fail in the same place: a brief that treats PEP as take-home.
Legal recruiters Sydney coverage for this seat is a status-and-practice problem before it is a market-rate problem. Candidates who want a number should ask which public cell the committee used, and whether it used the NSW private-practice average by mistake. A general counsel who wants to know what the other side of the invoice costs should ask whether the named partner is equity or salaried, whether the practice is one the 2026 tape is actually hiring, and whether the firm just added title without adding origination. The profession-wide solicitor picture is a neighboring article; this page is the partner cell, and the cell is empty on pay.
Two readers close on the same three checks. If you earn the row: status in writing, the PEP print labeled as a global average, and the NSW A$500,000 band labeled as a mixed census, not a partner median. If you pay the row: the same status line, the practice against the 2026 statute stack rather than against last year’s M&A hours, and a conversion dated 11 September 2026 if anyone is still comparing to a US figure. A company CTA belongs at the end of that list because the buyer of partner time is the person who funds both the drawings and the wage, whether or not they ever see either number.
Law firm partner compensation in Australia: common questions
What is a typical law firm partner salary Australia figure for 2026?
None is published: zero 2026 Sydney or Melbourne equity or salaried AUD cells sit in a primary source. What is public is headcount — 299 new partners in the AFR Law Partnership Survey of 25 June 2026 — and two 2025 global PEP averages: Herbert Smith Freehills at US$1.83 million and Ashurst at US$1.7 million in the 2025 Global 100. Those PEP figures average a worldwide equity pool. They are not Sydney drawings and not a salaried-partner wage. The NSW 2025 Annual Profile found 6 percent of private-practice solicitors, employees and principals mixed, reported FY23-24 gross income over A$500,000 (US$358,600 at the Reserve Bank of Australia 11 September 2026 rate of 0.7172).
How many 2026 Sydney versus Melbourne equity versus salaried partner-pay cells are public?
Zero. The four-cell matrix this page is built to fill — Sydney and Melbourne, equity and salaried, in AUD and USD — has no 2026 primary print. The AFR survey of 25 June 2026 published additions and a salaried-versus-equity mix in qualitative form. WGEA's 3 March 2026 release includes salaried partners and excludes equity drawings, so the statutory pay file cannot fill the missing cells either.
Is Global 100 PEP an Australian partner's take-home pay?
No. Herbert Smith Freehills PEP was US$1.83 million (about A$2.8 million) in the 2025 Global 100, a global equity-pool average published via Point Blank on 2 October 2025. Ashurst sat at US$1.7 million (about A$2.6 million) in the same table, and at GBP 1.390 million in its own FY25 annual report. PEP is not each partner's income, not a city cell, and not a salaried-partner wage.
How long does a Sydney partner search take in 2026?
Sartori's Sydney partner desk typically fills in 4 to 7 months. Median offer-to-acceptance is 14 working days across 13 closed searches over three years, at a 93 percent completion rate. Counter-offer incidence on that partner book is 39 percent. Files stall when the instructing firm has not decided equity versus salaried before the shortlist goes out.
Who pays Australian partner compensation — the partnership or the client general counsel?
Two different checks. Equity partners are paid from the profit pool; salaried partners are employees on a contract, as WGEA restated on 3 March 2026. The general counsel who instructs the firm funds the invoice that feeds both rows. NSW's 30 June 2026 census put 9,042 corporate certificate-holders against 10,727 principals: the first group pays partner time, the second earns the title.
Why did Australian firms add so many partners in the first half of 2026?
Surveyed firms added 299 new partners in the six months to July 2026, the largest such cohort since at least 2020, the AFR reported on 25 June 2026. A record share of those new seats were salaried rather than equity. Drivers named in the same coverage: litigation, regulatory pressure, and AI-related advice. Title expanded faster than the equity pool.
AFR survey cells, Global 100 PEP, and the Law Society census.
The 2026 Australian Financial Review partnership survey supplies headcount. The 2025 Global 100 and Ashurst's FY25 report supply PEP averages. The Law Society census describes principals, not drawings.

Price the Australian partner seat on the public file, not on a guessed band.
If you are hiring a partner into an Australian partnership, or you are a general counsel who needs to know what the other side of the invoice actually costs, we map status, practice and the 2026 public file before anyone sees a number. No invented Sydney band. No PEP print treated as take-home.
