Lawyer salary in Amsterdam 2026: the published cell, not a city average.

For lawyer salary Amsterdam in 2026, a general counsel writing an offer and a lawyer reading one are looking at a monthly cell. Linklaters year-one is EUR 5,713. Year-seven is EUR 11,919. Large Amsterdam independents did not print a 2026 scale. The question is which cell you are buying.

The 2026 lawyer salary Amsterdam figure is a cell, not an average.

De Stand 2026 prints associate monthly gross for the firms that supplied it, as of 1 January 2026. It does not print a city wage. NOvA’s 6,788 Amsterdam advocates are a licence count, not a paycheck.

Lefebvre Sdu’s De Stand 2026, as of 1 January 2026, sets Linklaters Amsterdam year-one at EUR 5,713 a month and year-seven at EUR 11,919, before holiday pay, bonus and benefits. That pair is the published ladder.

02 The 2026 cells

Holiday pay is the line that moves year-seven out of the modal band.

The monthly print is what De Stand published. The annual print is arithmetic. A general counsel who compares a counsel budget to the monthly number, or a lawyer who compares an offer to the annual number, is not looking at the same cell.

Linklaters Amsterdam year-one in De Stand 2026, as of 1 January 2026, is EUR 5,713 a month before holiday pay, bonus and benefits. Twelve months of that base is EUR 68,556. Apply the 8 percent holiday allowance a listed Amsterdam bank stated as extra on its 11 August 2026 careers posting, and the year-one total is EUR 74,040. Year-four on the same published ladder is EUR 7,678 a month, EUR 92,136 over twelve months, and EUR 99,507 with that 8 percent. Year-seven is EUR 11,919 a month, EUR 143,028 over twelve months, and EUR 154,470 with holiday pay. Those three holiday-pay totals are rounded to the euro. They are not a second survey.

At the ECB euro reference of USD 1.1592 on 11 September 2026, EUR 74,040 is about $85,800, EUR 99,507 is about $115,300, and EUR 154,470 is about $179,100. Year-seven before holiday pay, EUR 143,028, is about $165,800 at that same rate. The NGB modal band of EUR 100,000–150,000, reported by Mr. Online on 27 November 2025, is about $116,000–$174,000 at the same rate. Year-seven base sits inside the band. The holiday-pay total sits just above it. A company that matches “year-seven” without saying which of those two euros it means is matching two different offers.

The 2022-to-2026 move is not flat across the ladder. Mr. Online, on 28 July 2026, restated FD analysis of the fourteen firms that published year-one salaries continuously since 2022: year-one rose 21 percent, against Dutch inflation of 21.8 percent. Year-four rose 19.5 percent. Year-seven rose 17.5 percent. Real pay on the senior published rung fell. Hogan Lovells year-one rose 33 percent over those four years, to the EUR 5,555.55 in the 2026 Stand. A first-year who kept pace with prices and a seventh-year who did not are not the same hire, and they are not the same bid.

Damsté prints the lowest year-one in the 2026 Stand, at EUR 3,353 a month, EUR 40,236 over twelve months and EUR 43,455 with 8 percent holiday pay. That is the bottom of the published set, not a municipal wage and not an in-house median. The spread from Damsté to Linklaters year-one is the reason a single “Amsterdam lawyer salary” cannot be a number a board paper survives.

Lefebvre Sdu; Mr. Online, 28 July 2026 ↗

Sartori has worked the Amsterdam desk for 5 years. The interview instrument is one cohort of 250 structured interviews. Across that cohort, 118 sat in private-practice associate or counsel seats, and 71 of those 118 said the first number they quote is their own firm’s published rung, not a city average. The cohort does not contain a 2026 scale for a firm that left the table blank.

03 Who publishes

The offices that print a scale are not the offices with the most advocates.

De Stand 2026 counts 5,199 advocates at the fifty largest firms as of 1 January 2026. Linklaters Amsterdam, the office with the fullest published ladder, is 78 of them.

Printed 2026 scaleNo 2026 scale

  1. Published ladder Linklaters prints year-one, year-four and year-seven. Hogan Lovells, Baker McKenzie, Bird & Bird, CMS and Damsté print a year-one. The bid can cite a cell.
  2. Headcount only Clifford Chance and Freshfields appear in the 1 January 2026 advocate count. This edition does not give them a monthly scale to quote.
  3. Silent independents De Brauw, Loyens & Loeff, Houthoff, NautaDutilh, Stibbe and A&O Shearman did not publish a 2026 associate scale. Do not average them in.

The advocate counts below are firm-supplied totals in De Stand 2026 as of 1 January 2026, not Amsterdam-only office headcount where the firm is national, and not the NOvA district stock. De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek 340, Loyens & Loeff 283, Houthoff 258, NautaDutilh 227, Stibbe 223. Van Doorne fell 19 to 184. International offices in the same census: A&O Shearman 175, CMS 160, Clifford Chance 154, Freshfields 106, Linklaters 78. Stagiair classes at the three largest trainers were De Brauw 136, Loyens & Loeff 105 and Houthoff 89. The offices training the most advocates are the offices that did not print a 2026 monthly scale.

NOvA’s De Balie in Beeld 2026, published 18 March 2026, counted 6,788 advocates in arrondissement Amsterdam on 1 January 2026, up 118, against a national stock of 19,046. Amsterdam is more than one-third of the Dutch bar. That is a licence geography. It does not say what any of those 6,788 are paid. In calendar 2025 the district swore in 516 advocates. The new A-numbers are the training machine. They are not a wage table, and they are not a pool of counsel who will accept a public floor.

A managing associate at an international Amsterdam office told us, in that cohort, we open with our own published rung. A city average is not a number anyone in this office is paid. That is the earner’s side of the same fact the table shows. Where a rung exists, the comparison is that rung. Where it does not, the honest bid says the scale was not published, and stops.

04 The silence

The last De Brauw year-one is a 2024 number wearing a 2026 date in the press.

Mr. Online, on 28 July 2026, restated a Stand 2024 year-one for De Brauw of EUR 5,438. De Stand 2026 itself does not carry a De Brauw scale. Using the older print as if it were current is how a board paper acquires a figure the firm did not stand behind this year.

The buyer who needs a number anyway has three lawful moves, and one that is not. Cite Linklaters year-one, year-four or year-seven and say so. Cite another firm’s published year-one — Hogan Lovells EUR 5,555.55, Baker McKenzie EUR 4,793, Bird & Bird EUR 4,462, CMS EUR 4,432, Damsté EUR 3,353 — and say so. Or state that the target firm did not publish and price the seat on the work, not on a borrowed rung. The move that fails is an average of the firms that published, offered as “the Zuidas.” The firms that published are not a random sample of the firms that hire.

Demand around those desks is public and is not a wage. CBS, on 10 March 2026, put full-year 2025 turnover for legal services up 8.5 percent. A&O Shearman’s 2026 public-M&A survey put 2025 Dutch public-offer volume at almost EUR 35 billion. That volume explains why a corporate associate seat exists. It does not set the monthly gross. A general counsel staffing a deal team from the outside is buying hours on that volume. A general counsel hiring the lawyer onto the payroll is buying a different product, priced on the Amsterdam in-house counsel page, not on this ladder.

The credential that sits under a published rung has a posted price of its own. NOvA’s September 2026 Beroepsopleiding cohort costs EUR 14,255 excluding VAT. The three-year stage and the two-year professional course are what an advocaat seat buys. Most company postings do not require that title. 13 of Sartori’s 15 closed Amsterdam searches did not require NOvA admission. The other 2 needed the lawyer to appear for the employer. A firm that did not publish a 2026 scale does not have a scale of zero. Paying Linklaters year-seven for a seat that will never hold a court card is a different error from underpaying a seat that will.

Published year-one monthly gross, 1 January 2026. De Brauw, Stibbe, NautaDutilh, Loyens & Loeff, Houthoff and A&O Shearman are absent because they did not disclose a 2026 scale.

05 Who pays the figure

The general counsel is not buying the lockstep. The firm that published it is.

Three cash instruments sit next to the published ladder in 2026: a national in-house survey band, a listed-bank monthly range, and a municipal scale. None of them is Linklaters year-one. Each of them is what a company can actually write.

The Nederlands Genootschap van Bedrijfsjuristen’s 2025 survey, reported by Mr. Online on 27 November 2025, put 46 percent of full-time respondents in the EUR 100,000–150,000 band. Four percent sit above EUR 250,000. The sample is 360 members of an in-house association of more than 1,900. It is national, not an Amsterdam cut, and it is not a vacancy census. Year-seven at Linklaters, before holiday pay, already lives inside that band. A company that opens a counsel search by “beating year-seven” is trying to beat a number that already describes where experienced in-house counsel say they sit.

Live Amsterdam postings are a third instrument. ING Bank N.V. posted a Legal Counsel Arbeidsrecht and Industrial Relations seat on 11 August 2026 at EUR 5,677–9,137 a month, with a 13th month and 8 percent holiday pay extra, and with court advocacy expected. The floor of that band is already above Linklaters year-one base. The ceiling, annualized, is a senior-associate conversation, not a year-one. The AFM’s pension-supervision jurist, posted 28 May 2026, is EUR 64,000–106,000 a year including 13th month and holiday pay. The City of Amsterdam’s Senior Juridisch Medewerker, posted 31 August 2026, is scale 11 at EUR 4,520–6,422 a month. The floor loses to Linklaters year-one. The ceiling, EUR 77,064 over twelve months, is about $89,300 at the ECB rate of 11 September 2026, neck-and-neck with year-one plus holiday pay and nowhere near the NGB band.

A head of legal at an Amsterdam platform headquarters told us, the published year-one is the number associates quote, and it is not the number I can defend to the CFO for a counsel seat. Both halves are the 2026 market. The associate quotes a published rung. The company pays for a seat. They are not the same euro. The miss is treating those two sentences as one budget. Who hires which desk, and why public seats stay empty against year-one, is the Amsterdam legal-market briefing. The rung those seats are asked to match is the published cell above.

Your exposure is an unnamed cell. “Match Amsterdam” is not a compensation decision.

  • Name the rung. Year-one EUR 5,713, year-four EUR 7,678, or year-seven EUR 11,919, all as of 1 January 2026, before holiday pay. If the target firm did not publish, say that in the brief.
  • Say whether 8 percent holiday pay is inside the offer. Year-seven is EUR 143,028 without it and EUR 154,470 with it. Those are not interchangeable with a counsel band of EUR 100,000–150,000.
  • Do not paste the rung onto a counsel seat. The NGB band, the ING range of EUR 5,677–9,137 a month, and the municipal scale are the company and public instruments. The counsel page owns that table.
  • Open the search on the right desk. Company seats sit on in-house counsel recruiting. A firm hiring an associate sits on associate recruiting. The conversation starts at a confidential briefing.

Your offer is a cell only if the letter names the year, the holiday-pay treatment, and the employer that published the comparator.

  • Read the monthly print, then the 8 percent. A letter that quotes EUR 5,713 and a letter that quotes EUR 74,040 are describing the same year-one with different boundaries. Ask which one you are signing.
  • Do not average the silent firms. De Brauw’s EUR 5,438 is a 2024 print. It is not what a 2026 independent is paying you unless the letter says so.
  • A counsel seat is not a year-seven loss. EUR 143,028 of year-seven base already sits in the band where 46 percent of in-house respondents placed themselves in November 2025. The move is a different job, priced on the counsel page.
  • The acceptance window is short. Sartori’s Amsterdam median from offer to acceptance is 13 working days. A holiday-pay clause or a 30 percent ruling that still needs tax sign-off will not fit that window unless someone queued it.
The associate quotes a published rung. The company pays for a seat. They are not the same euro.
On the two readers
06 What the cash line leaves out

Bonus, a civil-service scale, and a 2027 tax change sit outside the monthly print.

De Stand excludes holiday pay, bonus and benefits. The 30 percent ruling is a second line on a foreign hire. CAO Rijk is the public ceiling a year-seven already touches. None of those is a reason to invent a scale the 2026 Stand left blank.

In the monthly printOutside it

  1. Monthly base The De Stand figure as of 1 January 2026. Linklaters year-one EUR 5,713. Year-seven EUR 11,919.
  2. Holiday pay 8 percent, the add-on the 11 August 2026 bank posting states is extra. It changes the annual total. It is not in the monthly print.
  3. Bonus Not in De Stand. On the in-house survey, 60 percent of NGB respondents have one. Do not assume the associate rung includes it.
  4. 2027 ruling The 30 percent facility stays through 2026 and becomes 27 percent from 2027. A 2026 letter is not automatically the 2027 net.

Belastingdienst’s 2026 expertise floor for the 30 percent facility is EUR 48,013 of taxable salary excluding the allowance, and EUR 36,497 for an employee under 30 with a master’s. Linklaters year-one with holiday pay, EUR 74,040, clears the higher floor. The maximum tax-free reimbursement is EUR 78,600, reached at a salary of EUR 262,000 or more. That EUR 262,000 is also the 2026 WNT cap in Staatscourant 2025, 27439. The facility remains 30 percent through 2026 and becomes 27 percent from 2027, with a higher salary floor, as Rijksoverheid states. IND’s 2026 knowledge-migrant norm for age 30 and over is EUR 5,942 a month excluding holiday pay, which is above Linklaters year-one of EUR 5,713 and inside the listed-bank posted band of EUR 5,677–9,137. A foreign hire priced only on the monthly print has not been priced.

CAO Rijk scales from 1 July 2026 put scale 11 at EUR 4,132.76 to 6,275.94 and scale 18 at a maximum of EUR 12,345.58. Linklaters year-seven at EUR 11,919 a month sits in the top of that senior civil-service range. The municipal scale-11 ceiling of EUR 6,422 does not. A lawyer leaving a published year-seven for a public seat can read that collision from the two published scales. A company using the civil-service floor as a private-sector benchmark is comparing a year-one loss to a counsel budget, which misses both.

Counter-offers on Sartori’s Amsterdam line run at 27 percent. 4 of the 15 closed files over three years drew one. The median from offer to acceptance is 13 working days. That is long enough to sign a letter that already states holiday pay and the ruling. It is not long enough to discover, after the candidate has the letter, that the comparator was a 2024 De Brauw print or a year-one pasted onto a counsel seat.

Linklaters annual totals with 8 percent holiday pay, against the NGB modal ceiling of EUR 150,000. Year-seven steps just through that ceiling. Year-one does not reach it.

Lefebvre Sdu, De Stand 2026, monthly bases as of 1 January 2026, annualized with 8 percent holiday pay. NGB band reported by Mr. Online, 27 November 2025.

07 How to price the seat

The miss was the cell, not the shortlist.

Sartori’s Amsterdam telemetry is 15 closed searches over three years. The salary finding is that several of those files opened on a junior published rung aimed at a different seat.

Of 15 closed Amsterdam searches over the trailing three years, 4 were reopened because the first offer was priced off a junior published rung and the shortlist walked. The line completes at 93 percent, typically in 4 to 7 months. Those four consumed the long end of that band. They are the finding that cuts against the easy story: the miss was the brief, not the supply of advocates. NOvA already counted 6,788 of them in the district on 1 January 2026.

2 of the 6 public-body or regulator files sat at the seven-month edge because the posted floor sat below a Zuidas year-one with holiday pay and the first shortlist declined. Public scales rarely move. Company files are where the counter-offer lands. Completion on the files we take is not the same as a fast close on a mis-priced public seat.

Sartori maps roughly 3,000 lawyers in Amsterdam. That file records admission, employer and a practice label. It does not record whether the employer published a 2026 scale, and it does not record holiday-pay or ruling clauses. Every package we work with comes from the offer letter, checked with the hiring company. The market map behind the wider programme is 1,480,000+ lawyers. The Amsterdam file is the slice behind the search record above. The bid starts from the published cell, not from a homemade average.

Two files from that book of 15, described by category only. A listed Amsterdam bank asked for an employment and works-council counsel. The first brief arrived with a floor around EUR 70,000, copied from a junior published total. The public shape of a listed-bank employment seat in August 2026 was EUR 5,677–9,137 a month, with court advocacy expected. The band was rewritten into the upper half of a range of that shape. The search closed in 5 months. The leftover was the first cell, not the candidate.

A payments platform with a small Amsterdam legal team asked for product and regulatory counsel, no NOvA admission. The package sat inside the NGB modal band, with the 30 percent ruling as a second line, and cleared the IND age-30 norm on a twelve-month reading. Time to fill was 4 months, inside the 4 to 7 month typical. A year-seven lockstep sent as the opening bid would have priced a counsel seat as if it were Linklaters. It was not.

The company that needs the seat filled starts at a confidential hiring conversation or at a direct briefing. The lawyer weighing a letter starts from the published cell and the holiday-pay line, not from a city average. Sartori & Partners has completed 400+ placements since 2017 (230+ in-house). The Amsterdam book is the 15 searches above, not that global total. Firms hiring an associate, and companies hiring counsel from that associate bench, are both on the associate and in-house desks.

Lawyer salary in Amsterdam 2026: questions from both sides of the offer letter

What is lawyer salary Amsterdam in 2026?

Lawyer salary Amsterdam in 2026 is a published monthly cell, not a city average. Lefebvre Sdu’s De Stand 2026, as of 1 January 2026, sets Linklaters Amsterdam year-one at EUR 5,713 and year-seven at EUR 11,919, both before holiday pay. Hogan Lovells year-one is EUR 5,555.55. Damsté prints the lowest year-one in that edition, at EUR 3,353. De Brauw, Stibbe, NautaDutilh, Loyens & Loeff, Houthoff and A&O Shearman did not publish a 2026 scale. NOvA counted 6,788 advocates in arrondissement Amsterdam on 1 January 2026. Sartori closed 15 Amsterdam searches over three years.

How does holiday pay change the Amsterdam associate number?

Eight percent holiday pay moves year-seven through the top of the in-house modal band. Linklaters year-one is EUR 68,556 over twelve months and EUR 74,040 with 8 percent holiday pay. Year-seven is EUR 143,028 before that allowance and EUR 154,470 with it. The 8 percent is the holiday-pay add-on a listed Amsterdam bank stated on its 11 August 2026 posting, applied here to the monthly bases in De Stand 2026. At the ECB reference of USD 1.1592 per euro on 11 September 2026, EUR 74,040 is about $85,800 and EUR 154,470 is about $179,100.

Which Amsterdam firms published a 2026 lawyer scale?

Linklaters published year-one, year-four and year-seven. Hogan Lovells, Baker McKenzie, Bird & Bird, CMS and Damsté published a year-one. The fifty largest firms in De Stand 2026 account for 5,199 advocates as of 1 January 2026, and Linklaters Amsterdam is 78 of them. De Brauw’s last printed year-one, from the 2024 Stand and restated by Mr. Online on 28 July 2026, was EUR 5,438. That is not a 2026 scale. A general counsel who says “match the Zuidas” has not yet named a cell.

What should a company match instead of a single Amsterdam lawyer number?

Match the rung the seat actually is, and say whether holiday pay is inside the figure. A year-seven Linklaters base of EUR 143,028 sits inside the NGB modal band of EUR 100,000–150,000, which held 46 percent of full-time respondents in the 2025 survey reported by Mr. Online on 27 November 2025. With holiday pay, EUR 154,470 sits just above that ceiling. A City of Amsterdam scale-11 floor of EUR 4,520, posted 31 August 2026, sits below Linklaters year-one. The counsel band, the posted bank range and the public floor are different products. The in-house table is on the Amsterdam counsel salary page.

How long does an Amsterdam lawyer search take, and what happens to the offer?

Sartori’s Amsterdam desk typically closes in 4 to 7 months, with a median of 13 working days from offer to acceptance. Of 15 closed searches over three years, completion is 93 percent and counter-offers hit 27 percent. 4 of those 15 files reopened because the first offer was priced off a junior published rung. A listed Amsterdam bank hired an employment counsel in 5 months after that rewrite. The firm-wide retained book is a different clock: 400+ placements since 2017 (230+ in-house).

What does the 30 percent ruling do to a 2026 Amsterdam lawyer offer?

A 2026 offer at the Linklaters year-one holiday-pay total of EUR 74,040 clears the EUR 48,013 expertise floor. Belastingdienst’s 2026 threshold is EUR 48,013 taxable salary excluding the allowance, or EUR 36,497 for under-30s with a master’s. The tax-free slice caps at EUR 78,600, at a salary of EUR 262,000 or more, the same figure as the 2026 WNT cap. The facility stays at 30 percent through 2026 and becomes 27 percent from 2027. Monthly figures are firm-supplied as of 1 January 2026 except De Brauw’s EUR 5,438, which is a 2024 Stand print restated on 28 July 2026. Holiday-pay totals are monthly times 12 times 1.08, rounded to the euro, using the 8 percent stated on the ING posting of 11 August 2026. USD uses USD 1.1592 per euro on 11 September 2026. NGB is a national member survey, not an Amsterdam cut. NOvA counts licensed advocates, not pay. No 2026 scale is estimated for a firm that did not publish one.

The Amsterdam interview cohort, the 15 closed searches, the 27 percent counter-offer incidence and the 13-day offer-to-acceptance window are the research programme on our research page. The counsel band those searches are often priced against is in-house counsel salary in Amsterdam.
