Lawyer salary India 2026: the posted number that does not close
Bar & Bench RecTracker, on 16 October 2025, put first-year CTC at India's full-service firms between ₹15.70 lakh and ₹23 lakh. That is the number companies still brief against. It is not the Mumbai or Delhi listed legal chair the 2026 search actually fails on.
The 2026 search is not for the number on the campus poster.
Bar & Bench RecTracker, on 16 October 2025, put first-year CTC at India’s full-service firms between ₹15.70 lakh and ₹23 lakh. Across 250 structured interviews with Singapore associates and counsel, that lawyer salary India band is the figure India-facing general counsel still write into a requisition — and the figure that does not close the Mumbai or Delhi listed chair.
First-year all-in at Khaitan & Co for the 2025 campus cycle, as compiled by Bar & Bench RecTracker on 16 October 2025. This is the top of the published India firm A0 band, not the listed legal chair. Bar & Bench ↗
Four published first-year firm CTCs. They describe the campus seat. They do not price the listed Company Secretary and Chief Legal Officer the 2026 company search is actually trying to fill. The listed numbers sit in the next band.

The 2026 lawyer salary India table that does not close a search
School-reported packages from the 2025 and 2026 campus cycles are the other public rupee series. They mix full-service firms, a bank seat, PSUs and international training contracts. They still describe joiners, not the listed chair.
A general counsel who Googles a 2026 India legal number lands on a campus tracker. That is not a defect in the press. It is what Indian full-service firms still publish. Khaitan & Co had already advertised a ₹22.50 lakh rewards proposition for the 2025-26 graduating cohort on 8 August 2024, as reported by Bar & Bench; the October 2025 RecTracker restated the live 2025-batch figure at ₹23 lakh. Argus Partners onboarded 14 freshers into corporate, M&A, finance and disputes at ₹18 lakh, with compensation based on office location. Those are firm-reported first-year all-ins. They are not in-hand after tax, and they do not split Mumbai from Delhi.
The school books sit beside that firm series, and they are not a city wage. MNLU Mumbai, reporting on 25 August 2026, had placed 47 of 120 in the 2026 batch, with a ₹12 lakh median and a ₹22.50 lakh high. NLU Jodhpur’s 2026 Day Zero, reported 26 August 2025, put the average at ₹19 lakh among 50 students who opted in from a batch of 110. Offer counts on that Jodhpur book were AZB & Partners 8, Khaitan & Co 8, Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas 7, Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas 7 and Trilegal 4, plus one in-house seat at ICICI Bank. Treat the MNLU-to-Jodhpur gap as school mix. Do not read the Mumbai NLU median as a Mumbai-firm pay cut.
| School | Batch | Placed | Average or median | High (as reported) | Report date |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| NLU Jodhpur | 2026 | 49 of 50 Day Zero opt-ins (110 in the batch) | ₹19 lakh average | Domestic firms led the book | 26 Aug 2025 |
| NLU Jodhpur | 2025 | 44 students | ₹18.5 lakh median | ₹22.5 lakh domestic high (Khaitan) | 22 Aug 2024 |
| NLSIU Bengaluru | 2025 PPO | 35 PPOs before Day Zero | ₹17 lakh median | Not stated on the page | 29 Jul 2024 |
| NALSAR Hyderabad | 2025 | 95 of 137 in the RCC; all 95 placed | ₹19 lakh average | ₹65 lakh international (not India-posted) | 6 Aug 2025 |
| NLU Odisha | 2025 | 50 of 80 participants; 30 domestic-firm seats | ₹14.33 lakh average | ₹22.5 lakh | 28 May 2025 |
| MNLU Mumbai | 2026 | 47 of 120 as of the report date | ₹12 lakh median | ₹22.5 lakh | 25 Aug 2026 |
NLSIU Bengaluru’s ₹17 lakh median is a pre-Day Zero PPO figure for 35 students, reported 29 July 2024. NLU Odisha’s 2025 book, reported 28 May 2025, put 30 of 50 placements in domestic firms and 13 in advisory, banks and PSUs. NALSAR’s ₹65 lakh high, reported 6 August 2025, measures an international seat. Figures: Bar & Bench RecTracker.

Bar & Bench RecTracker, 16 Oct 2025; RBI/FBIL ↗The campus CTC is a published number. The 2026 search is not for a fresher.
The listed chair a general counsel actually has to fill.
The company that cannot close the 2026 search is not shopping for a Day Zero joiner. It is filling a Senior Management Personnel legal seat that SEBI pulled up the org chart.
Start with the filing, because that is the only rupee-audited in-house series on this page. Tata Steel Limited’s Section 197 statement for FY2024-25 discloses gross remuneration for three legal titles at a Mumbai-registered NSE/BSE-listed steel producer. The Company Secretary and Chief Legal Officer is a combined statutory-plus-legal Key Managerial Personnel seat; the integrated-report senior-management page confirms that combined title as KMP as on 2 June 2025. Those rupees are salary, allowances and perquisites as the statement defines them. They are FY2024-25, not FY2025-26, and they are not an offer letter. A general counsel or head of HR who treats that table as a 2026 offer band is one year late and one instrument off: it is a statutory disclosure of what a named chair cost last year, not a campus CTC restated in crore.
Titan Company Limited’s Annual Report 2025-26, Board’s report dated 8 May 2026, puts the General Counsel and Company Secretary at 20.06 times median employee remuneration, with a 9.29 percent increase in that KMP’s pay, against an 8.5 percent rise in median employee pay, on 7,886 permanent employees. The rupee CTC is not in the mailed Board’s report. Do not invent it.
The credential on those chairs is the reason a campus CTC does not move them. Vinod Kothari Consultants, updating on 3 April 2025 against SEBI’s circular of 1 April 2025, restates the LODR rule: the listed Compliance Officer must be a qualified company secretary, in whole-time employment, designated as KMP, in senior management, and not more than one organizational level below the managing director or whole-time director. Companies Act 2013 section 203 still requires a whole-time company secretary at listed companies and at public companies with paid-up capital of ₹10 crore or more. SEBI allows the company secretary and the Compliance Officer to be different people. The 2025–26 filings we opened mostly were not.
Ashok Leyland Limited’s Regulation 30 filing dated 21 April 2026 appointed a General Counsel as Senior Management Personnel and stated the incoming officer was dual qualified (LLB, FCS), with an immediately prior General Counsel and Company Secretary seat at a listed auto-components issuer. That is the cleanest public example of the combined gate. A private-sector bank in Mumbai, as reported by The Hindu on 30 June 2026, appointed a General Counsel–Designate effective 20 August 2026 and General Counsel from 1 October 2026, as Senior Management Personnel from the designate date; the prior seats named in that report were a global PE sponsor’s India Head of Legal & Compliance and a US bank’s India Head of Legal. Tata Consultancy Services Limited, Regulation 30 dated 28 February 2026, appointed a General Counsel from 1 April 2026 at Nariman Point, succeeding on superannuation, from a listed-automaker general-counsel seat in the same group. Hyundai Motor India Limited, Regulation 30 dated 3 September 2026, appointed a General Counsel and Function Head – Legal & Corporate Governance as SMP from 5 September 2026 at a Gurugram corporate office, and excluded a Business Head – Chief Legal Office from the SMP list from 30 September 2026. Anthem Biosciences Limited, Regulation 30 dated 13 March 2026, recorded a post-listing general-counsel SMP superannuation. None of those filings attached a rupee CTC.
| Object | Campus CTC | Listed legal KMP |
|---|---|---|
| What it measures | Firm-reported first-year all-in, campus cycle | Statutory gross remuneration or a LODR SMP appointment |
| Who it hires | NLU graduates clearing AIBE on a two-year provisional clock | Dual LLB+FCS profiles, PE-sponsor legal heads, listed-issuer general counsel |
| What a company closes with it | An A0 firm seat in Mumbai, Delhi or Bengaluru | The 2026 in-house search |
| What it does not close | A LODR-adjacent general counsel or CS+legal chair | A Day Zero campus offer |
Mumbai and Delhi buy the seat. Bengaluru is the third node.
Firm-side hiring that is public is still A0 and a specialist lateral. The in-house seats that moved in 2025 and 2026 are bank and listed-issuer general counsel chairs.
Chambers Global, accessed 11 September 2026, places AZB & Partners, JSA, Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas, Trilegal, Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas and Khaitan & Co in Band 1 of Corporate/M&A: The Elite — India. Band 2 on the same table is S&R Associates and TT&A; Band 3 includes CMS INDUSLAW, DSK Legal, Saraf and Partners, Touchstone Partners and Veritas Legal. That table is a map of who is instructed on national and cross-border M&A, not a vacancy list. Chambers Asia-Pacific Capital Markets — India puts Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas and Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas in Band 1, with AZB, JSA, Khaitan, S&R Associates and Trilegal in Band 2. Those are the IPO, QIP and rights desks that match the SEBI FY2025-26 primary-market volumes in the next section. Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas lists domestic and foreign commercial enterprises, financial institutions, private equity and venture capital funds, start-ups, and government and regulatory bodies as client types on its own homepage, with practice columns that run from M&A and private equity through insolvency, capital markets and white-collar — which is why that platform is a simultaneous buyer of corporate, funds, disputes and listed-governance lawyers, not only of Day Zero joiners.
The 2025 campus intake is the only firm-side buyer census with named headcount. Bar & Bench RecTracker, 16 October 2025, recorded Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas at 170 freshers, Khaitan & Co at 106, Trilegal at 80-plus, Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas at 70, J. Sagar Associates close to 50, CMS IndusLaw at 31, S&R Associates at 21, Argus Partners at 14 and S&A Law Offices at 13. CMS IndusLaw is the only firm on that page that published an office split, charted below. As of 27 August 2026, the same tracker had 11 firms hiring 517 fresh graduates from the 2026 batch so far — a partial, press-compiled count, not a market census.
Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas hired 114 freshers from the 2024 graduating batches, per RecTracker on 30 July 2024, of whom 63 were female and 51 male. The 2025 intake of 170 is a headcount move, not a published pay move. Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas states 190 partners, over 1,000 lawyers, 10 national practice groups and 7 cities on its homepage. Khaitan & Co publishes Mumbai (One World Centre, Fort, Lower Parel), Delhi NCR (Barakhamba Road, Noida, Gurugram), Bengaluru, Kolkata, Chennai, Pune, Ahmedabad, GIFT City and a Singapore office on its contact page. AZB & Partners, in its Chambers Global 2026 profile, lists Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Pune, Chennai and Gift City.
The one 2026 firm-side office opening that names a practice and a city is Trilegal at Killick House, Fort, Mumbai. The firm’s 17 August 2026 press release called it the ninth Indian office, dedicated to disputes, and stated 161 partners on a lockstep model and over 1,300 professionals across Mumbai, Delhi, Gurugram, Bengaluru, Chennai, Pune and GIFT City. The Hindu Business Line, on 20 August 2026, put the disputes practice at 28 partners and over 215 lawyers nationally, and named proximity to the Bombay High Court and senior-counsel chambers as the Fort rationale. Demand, as the firm described it, sat in financial services, technology, energy and infrastructure. That is a disputes seat next to the High Court. It is not a campus CTC.
GIFT City sits next to those desks, not instead of them. The International Financial Services Centres Authority, accessed 11 September 2026, recorded 1,260 registrations and authorizations as on June 2026, banking assets above USD 120 billion and fund commitments above USD 45 billion. AZB, Trilegal and Khaitan each publish a Gift City office. IFSCA regulates financial products and institutions inside GIFT IFSC. It is not a carve-out from the Advocates Act. Foreign-law FIFO cannot take the Indian-law slice of an onshore feeder.
A rupee increment does not create a company-secretary credential.
The statutes create counsel-to-KMP work. They do not create A0 work.
The 2026 India seat that a posted campus CTC does not close is produced by a stack of dated instruments that all require Indian-enrolled counsel at counsel-to-partner or listed-KMP seniority, mostly in Mumbai and Delhi–Gurugram.
Campus A0Listed legal KMP
- Campus A0 State Bar enrollment, AIBE on a two-year provisional clock, a published firm CTC. This is the seat the tracker prices.
- Indian-law counsel Combination filings, resolution-plan monitoring, securities enforcement, employment-code mapping. The work the 2025–26 statutes actually generate.
- Listed CS+legal LODR SMP, qualified company secretary, one level below MD or WTD. This is the chair the company search fails on.
The Bar Council of India Rules for Registration and Regulation of Foreign Lawyers and Foreign Law Firms in India, as amended by Gazette notification F. No. BCI:D:3335/2025 dated 13 May 2025, keep Indian-law practice an Indian-enrolled monopoly. Foreign lawyers may not advise on Indian law or appear before an Indian court, tribunal, board or authority entitled to record evidence. Fly-in/fly-out is capped at 60 consecutive calendar days in any 12-month period from first arrival, with a Form C declaration that Indian law will not be practiced. A LiveLaw firm article dated 27 May 2025 recorded only three foreign firms as having entered as of April 2025, and noted Delhi High Court W.P.(C) 1556 of 2024 pending without a stay. LiveLaw, on 3 August 2026, reported a BCI clarification that a provisionally enrolled advocate may practice in full for two years pending AIBE; failure to pass suspends the license until the exam is passed, without cancelling enrollment. Every India-law M&A, disputes, insolvency, capital-markets and listed-governance seat in Mumbai and Delhi stays an Indian State-Bar chair.
Competition (Amendment) Act, 2023 merger control went live on 10 September 2024. The Competition Commission of India (Combinations) Regulations, 2024, compute a deal-value threshold — transaction value above ₹2,000 crore and a target with substantial India operations — that pulls digital and PE deals into Form I or Form II even where de-minimis would once have applied. Phase I is 30 calendar days; the deemed-approval outer clock is 150 days. A Minister of State reply in the Lok Sabha, reported by ANI/The Tribune on 9 February 2026, put CCI at 149 merger filings and 146 merger notices disposed in calendar 2025, with 54 antitrust matters and 38 antitrust final orders. Chambers Merger Control 2026 — India, dated 7 July 2026 on the page, counted 120 combinations reviewed between 1 June 2025 and 1 June 2026, with average approval times of about 48 calendar days (Form I) and 85 (Form II), and filing fees of ₹3 million (Form I) and ₹9 million (Form II).
The Supreme Court in Independent Sugar Corporation Ltd. v. Girish Sriram Juneja, 2025 INSC 124 (29 January 2025), held that CCI approval for a notifiable resolution plan had to come before the committee of creditors voted. The Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (Amendment) Act, 2026, Presidential assent 6 April 2026, then recut that sequencing: IBBI’s January–March 2026 newsletter records that only the successful resolution applicant, where required, must obtain prior CCI approval before the plan is submitted to the Adjudicating Authority. MCA S.O. 2625(E) appointed 26 May 2026 as the date for the commenced sections. IndiaLaw, on 9 June 2026, recorded 56 of 72 sections in force, with creditor-in-possession (Chapter IV-A) and group insolvency (Chapter VA) not commenced. Treat those two chapters as on the statute book, not live.
The docket those partners still work is aged. IBBI Table 1, as at 31 March 2026, put 8,987 CIRPs admitted, 7,102 closed and 1,885 ongoing. The ICSI Institute of Insolvency Professionals digest of IBBI Volume 39, dated 21 August 2026, put the stock at 30 June 2026 at 9,166 admitted, 7,301 closed, 1,865 ongoing, 1,484 resolution plans and 3,074 liquidations. Fortune India, on 20 August 2026, citing CareEdge Ratings on the same IBBI stock, recorded 177 fresh admissions in Q1 FY2026-27 and an average resolution timeline of 757 days in June 2026. That is a multi-year stock. It is not a 2026 campus bulge.
Instrument goes liveFiduciary duties bite
- Merger-control clock Deal-value threshold and a 150-day CCI outer limit. Combination counsel in Delhi and Mumbai PE-M&A, not a fresher.
- Labour Codes Four Codes in force, Central Rules later. Employment and industrial-relations counsel mapping old contracts onto new codes.
- IBC 2.0 Commenced sections live; creditor-in-possession and group insolvency still waiting on subordinate legislation.
- DPDP duties Board on paper; fiduciary notice, consent and security duties still ahead. Privacy counsel is being hired against an unstaffed Board.
The Digital Personal Data Protection Rules, 2025, G.S.R. 846(E), were gazetted on 13 November 2025. Rules on Board constitution are in force from that date; Consent Manager registration follows at 12 months; fiduciary notice, consent, security, children’s data, principal rights and cross-border rules follow at 18 months — 13 May 2027. PIB, on 17 November 2025, stated the highest penalty as up to ₹250 crore for failure of reasonable security safeguards, and recorded 6,915 consultation inputs. Lok Sabha Unstarred Question 3960, answered 12 August 2026, stated that the Chairperson and four Members had not been appointed; an Employment News advertisement ran on 6 June 2026. LiveLaw, on 1 August 2026, recorded that eight months after the Rules there was still no appointed Chairperson or Members. In-house privacy counsel in Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi is being hired now to write notices and processor contracts against a Board that is not yet a functioning enforcement employer.
Four Labour Codes took effect on 21 November 2025, rationalizing 29 prior Central labor laws, per PIB. Lok Sabha Unstarred Question 152, answered 20 July 2026, recorded Central Rules notified on 8 May 2026, with a concurrent-list gap: most States and Union Territories had finalized or pre-published rules, a few had not. KPMG’s 10 May 2026 tax flash on those Central Rules recorded overtime at twice the rate with a 144-hour quarterly cap, gratuity for fixed-term employees after one year, and a Worker Re-Skilling Fund of 15 days’ last wages within 10 days of retrenchment. Employment counsel at finance and insurance employers in Mumbai, and at CPSUs where the Union is the appropriate government in Delhi, is mapping old Factories and industrial-disputes contracts onto that stack. That is counsel work. It is not Day Zero work.
The capital cycle is the overlay, not a second pay table. EY’s 2026 India M&A report put calendar-2025 deal value at USD 123.8 billion across 2,678 transactions. Forvis Mazars India counted 565 M&A and PE transactions worth USD 36.3 billion in Q2 2026. SEBI’s Annual Report 2025-26, Chapter 03, published August 2026, put equity public issues at ₹1.9 lakh crore and newly listed companies at 366, of which 109 were main-board IPOs raising ₹1.8 lakh crore and 257 were SME listings. KPMG in India, May 2026, counted 108 main-board listings raising about INR 1.761 trillion, 35 percent PE-backed; the 108 versus SEBI’s 109 is a universe difference, not a disagreement to collapse. QIPs ran 36 issues for ₹67,853 crore. Open offers closed: 122. Chapter 10 put 319 adjudication orders covering 640 entities, settlement collections at ₹109.8 crore, and 1,066 SAT appeals pending at 31 March 2026. DPIIT, as reported by Outlook Business on 5 June 2026 and IBEF in September 2026, put FY2025-26 FDI equity at USD 58.84 billion, with Maharashtra at USD 18.41 billion, Karnataka at USD 12.93 billion and, in the DPIIT-attributed India Briefing table of 4 June 2026, Delhi at USD 6.182 billion. Press Note No. 2 (2026 Series), 15 March 2026, aligned the land-border beneficial-owner test to PMLA. India–EFTA TEPA entered into force on 1 October 2025 with an EFTA investment pledge PIB summarized as USD 100 billion over 15 years. India–UK CETA and the Double Contribution Convention entered into force on 15 July 2026, with UK services commitments across 137 sub-sectors. None of those instruments authorizes a UK solicitor or an EFTA lawyer to occupy an Indian-law seat.
The lawyer who earns the figure, and the company that pays it.
This page has two readers on one number: the India lawyer looking at a 2026 figure, and the general counsel, chief legal officer or head of HR who has to put that lawyer on the payroll.
If you are the general counsel or head of HR briefing a 2026 India legal seat, the campus CTC is a false friend. Write the seniority and the credential before you write the rupee.
- Name the chair, not the tracker. A LODR SMP legal seat and an A0 firm seat are different products. Pricing the first off the second produces a requisition nobody who can do the work will sign.
- Ask for the CS credential early. If the Compliance Officer must sit one level below the managing director, a single-hat advocate will not pass the filing. Dual LLB+FCS is the gate the 2026 OEM filing actually used.
- Budget Mumbai and Gurugram as one corridor. The listed auto SMP sat in Gurugram; the bank and IT-services general counsel chairs sat in Mumbai. Bengaluru is the third corporate node, not a cheaper substitute for the same LODR chair.
- Do not gold-plate a campus brief. Combination, IBC and DPDP work is counsel-to-partner work. An A0 intake number will not staff it.
If you are reading this as the person who would earn the 2026 figure, the campus tracker is your starting salary only if you are an A0. The listed chair pays a different object, on a different credential.
- Read the filing, not the tracker. Section 197 gross and a Regulation 30 SMP title are the in-house evidence. Forum ladders and job-board medians are not on this page because they are not primary.
- AIBE is a two-year clock, not a rumour. Provisional practice is full practice until the two years run. After that, no Certificate of Practice, no holding out.
- Company secretary is a second license. The listed chairs that moved in 2026 asked for FCS or an ICSI-adjacent credential alongside the LLB. A rupee increment on a single hat does not create that.
- GIFT is a parallel stack. A funds or IFSC-regulatory desk in Gandhinagar does not replace an Indian-law Mumbai seat, and FIFO does not let a foreign qualification take the onshore slice.
Two composites from the Singapore associate book, presented as Sartori work. No real issuer, firm or candidate is named. The company reader should watch the credential and the reporting line; the lawyer reader should watch whether the posted rupee is a campus CTC or a statutory chair. Those are the same 2026 number asked from opposite sides of the offer letter.
A listed industrial, Mumbai. A general counsel succession at an NSE-listed metals issuer came in with a compensation frame lifted from the campus tracker. The reporting line was one level below the managing director; the LODR Compliance Officer had to be a qualified company secretary. The first shortlist, built on single-hat advocates, produced no signed offer. We rewrote the brief around a dual LLB+FCS profile and a PE-sponsor or listed-issuer prior chair. The file closed in 14 weeks, past our 6-to-12-week envelope, after the rupee was rebuilt off the statutory chair rather than the campus poster. The general counsel at that issuer told Sartori the board would not sign a campus-band offer against a LODR-adjacent chair.
An India-desk associate, Singapore book. A corporate client asked for an India-fluent associate to sit against Mumbai capital-markets and combination work, and wrote a first-year CTC into the band. Candidates with three to six years of Indian-law M&A would not engage. We pulled the campus number out of the brief, named the CCI and SEBI work, and closed in 8 weeks. The head of legal at a Gurugram automotive OEM, on a separate file in the same book, told us the incoming SMP had to be dual-qualified; a rupee bump on a single-hat lawyer was not the gap.
What our Singapore associate book actually does with an India brief.
Sartori & Partners has worked the Singapore associate market for 8 years, for India-facing corporate clients and full-service firms.
Sartori’s Singapore mandate telemetry records 23 closed associate searches over the trailing three years, at a 93 percent completion rate, on a typical 6-to-12-week timeline, with median offer-to-acceptance of 10 working days and counter-offer incidence of 37 percent. Of those 23 closed searches, 11 were India-facing associate seats for corporate or full-service clients. Five of those 11 ran past 12 weeks because the first brief used a campus CTC as the compensation frame. That is the finding that does not flatter us: we accepted those briefs. The campus poster is an easy document to attach. It is the wrong document for a listed chair or a mid-PQE India-law desk.
Across 250 structured interviews with Singapore associates and counsel, 72 of 96 respondents sitting on India-facing desks over a 24-month window told Sartori that a Mumbai or Delhi general counsel who posted a campus CTC against a listed legal chair did not get a signed offer. Sartori’s quarterly survey since 2019, in the 2026 second-quarter wave, recorded 19 of 31 India-facing in-house hiring-manager replies naming the dual company-secretary-and-legal chair — not a rupee increment — as the binding constraint on the 2026 India in-house search.
Sartori maps roughly 6,000 lawyers in Singapore. That file is coverage for an associate search run from this desk, including India-facing mandates. It is not a claim about who is available in Mumbai, and it is not a second interview count. Globally the firm maps nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles and has run quarterly market surveys since 2019.
If you are a company that has to put an India-facing lawyer on the payroll — a general counsel adding a Mumbai or Gurugram SMP, a chief legal officer dual-hatting CS and legal, a head of HR who has been handed a campus CTC and a LODR calendar — the service view of the same book is our in-house and general counsel search and our associate and attorney recruiting. Companies building a legal function from nothing rather than replacing a listed chair should start with hiring your first general counsel. The private-practice versus in-house cash comparison that this page does not restage lives on our private practice vs in-house salary guide. The India briefs that used a campus CTC as the compensation frame were the slow ones. That is the operational read a company should take from this page, not a second pay ladder.
Lawyer salary in India, 2026: questions from both sides of the offer letter
What is a typical lawyer salary India figure in 2026?
A published 2025 campus CTC at India’s full-service firms ran from ₹15.70 lakh to ₹23 lakh. Bar & Bench RecTracker, on 16 October 2025, recorded Khaitan & Co at ₹23 lakh, Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas at ₹20 lakh, Trilegal around ₹19.50 lakh and J. Sagar Associates at a ₹15.70 lakh average. That band describes the first-year firm seat. It is not the listed general-counsel chair a company is trying to fill, and it is not a mid-PQE retainer — those cash figures were not in a firm announcement or a statutory filing we opened.
What does a first-year at a Mumbai or Delhi full-service firm earn?
Khaitan & Co paid ₹23 lakh all-in to its 2025 campus class, per Bar & Bench RecTracker on 16 October 2025. The same tracker put Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas at ₹20 lakh and Trilegal in a ₹19.50 lakh range. Converted at the FBIL rate of 95.7245 rupees per dollar on the Reserve Bank of India homepage on 11 September 2026, that campus band sits near USD 16,400 to 24,000. Argus Partners stated ₹18 lakh with pay based on office location. Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas hired 170 freshers in 2025 against 114 in 2024; the 2025 rupee CTC was not on the page, so it is omitted.
What does a listed-company general counsel in India earn?
One Mumbai-registered NSE/BSE-listed steel producer disclosed ₹4,32,60,654 of gross remuneration for a combined Company Secretary and Chief Legal Officer in FY2024-25. The same Section 197 table listed a Chief Legal Officer (Industrial & Litigation) at ₹1,98,46,780 and a Chief (Legal Counsel Contracts, M&A & Corporate Finance) at ₹1,28,77,789. A Bengaluru-headquartered listed consumer company reported its General Counsel and Company Secretary at 20.06 times median employee pay in FY2025-26, up 9.29 percent; the rupee CTC for that seat was not in the mailed Board’s report, so it is not guessed.
Why does a posted campus CTC fail to close a 2026 in-house search in Mumbai or Delhi?
Because the 2026 in-house chair is a LODR-adjacent SMP seat, not an A0, after SEBI’s 1 April 2025 circular. That circular puts the listed Compliance Officer one organizational level below the managing director or whole-time director, and the officer must be a qualified company secretary. Public 2025–26 Regulation 30 filings filled those chairs from PE-sponsor legal heads, listed-automaker general counsel, and dual LLB+FCS profiles — not from the ₹18–23 lakh fresher band.
Does lawyer salary Mumbai differ from lawyer salary Delhi or lawyer salary Bangalore?
CMS IndusLaw hired 31 freshers from the 2025 batch, per Bar & Bench RecTracker on 16 October 2025, and published the only office-level split on that page. Delhi was the largest office, then Bengaluru, then Mumbai. MNLU Mumbai’s 2026 median of ₹12 lakh, reported 25 August 2026, sits below NLU Jodhpur’s 2026 average of ₹19 lakh because of school mix, not because Mumbai firms cut pay. Argus Partners is the one 2025 campus reporter that said compensation varies by office location.
Who actually hires the 2026 India legal seat that the campus number does not close?
Chambers Global Band 1 lists six full-service Indian firms on Corporate/M&A: The Elite. The two buyer rooms sit in Mumbai and the Delhi–Gurugram NCR, with Bengaluru as the third corporate node. On the company side, 2026 Regulation 30 filings named general-counsel SMP chairs at a Mumbai private-sector bank, a Nariman Point IT-services issuer, a Gurugram auto OEM and a dual-qualified commercial-vehicle OEM.
Campus CTC, Section 197 filings, and the 2025-26 statutory stack.
Campus rupees come from Bar & Bench RecTracker. Listed legal rupees come from Section 197 and annual-report tables. The work those desks buy is in SEBI, CCI, IBBI, DPIIT and gazette instruments. Sartori figures come from the Singapore associate research program.

Campus CTC is firm-reported all-in as compiled by legal press, not in-hand pay. Section 197 figures are statutory gross for named titles at one issuer in FY2024-25. ALB headcounts are Asia-based lawyers, not India-only FTEs. KPMG's 108 main-board listings and SEBI's 109 main-board IPOs are different universes. CIIRP and group insolvency are on the IBC Amendment Act statute book and were not commenced as of the 9 June 2026 IndiaLaw note. DPDP fiduciary duties run to 13 May 2027. USD conversions use FBIL 95.7245 on 11 September 2026.
