NQ Salary 2026: The UK Firm-Tier Table

On 5 June 2026 Legal Cheek reported Quinn Emanuel would pay London newly qualified solicitors £189,000 from 1 July 2026 — £39,000 above the Magic Circle's still-frozen £150,000. This is the 2026 UK table by firm tier, for the solicitor who earns the figure and the general counsel who matches it.

The 2026 floor is not Magic Circle.

Sartori maps about 30,000 lawyers in London. The 2026 nq solicitor salary that contradicts Magic Circle as the floor is £189,000 at a US disputes office. A general counsel who still treats Magic Circle as that floor is matching a 2024 lockstep.

The 2026 nq solicitor salary table, by firm tier

Dated published bases, not a blended City average. US London sits above Magic Circle. A UK independent now prints the Magic Circle cell. Public bodies are a different market.

Quinn Emanuel’s London newly qualified base is £189,000 from 1 July 2026, as Legal Cheek reported on 5 June 2026 and The Lawyer date-stamped the same day. The firm also published the next rungs: 1 PQE £205,000, 2 PQE £231,000, 3 PQE £273,000. That ladder is a London sterling scale following a US associate reset, not a UK regulator series. The firm does not run a UK training contract, so the NQ rate is a lateral-hire price.

Magic Circle still prints £150,000. The Lawyer, on 2 July 2026, stated those firms last upped their rates in 2024. Freshfields moved from £125,000 to £150,000 effective 1 May 2024, a 20 percent step Bloomberg Law recorded on 3 May 2024, with trainees to £56,000 and £61,000. Clifford Chance matched with a £25,000 rise backdated to 1 May 2024, The Lawyer recorded on 29 May 2024. Slaughter and May moved to £150,000 effective 1 September 2024. A&O Shearman joined the same week, Law.com International reported on 31 May 2024. That pack is the 2024 lockstep, still the 2026 UK-heritage print. It is not the 2026 floor.

The rest of the 2026 table is a set of dated cells, not a curve. The Lawyer on 10 March 2026 placed Ropes & Gray at £170,000, from £165,000; Milbank at £170,455; Goodwin and Sidley at £175,000; Paul Weiss, Willkie and Gibson Dunn at £180,000. Willkie’s own £180,000 headline followed on 11 March 2026, a £10,000 step on Legal Cheek’s September 2025 £170,000 cell. Kirkland’s Legal Cheek firm page prints newly qualified salary as £175,000, stated as $225,000 converted at the firm’s rate; The Lawyer on 10 March 2026 converted the same dollar scale as just over £174,000. Those two sterling prints are not averaged here. White & Case moved London NQ from £150,000 to £175,000 from January 2025, The Lawyer reported on 1 August 2024, and took 2 PQE to £200,000.

UK internationals and nationals sit below that US cluster and, after July 2026, no longer all sit below Magic Circle. Macfarlanes moved from £140,000 to £150,000 on 1 July 2026. DLA Piper London moved from £130,000 to £140,000 in July 2026, Legal Business reported on 6 July 2026, with six regional offices at £84,000, from £82,000. Legal Business on 16 June 2025 had already recorded Ashurst at £140,000, from £125,000; DLA London at £130,000, from £110,000; and CMS at £120,000, from £110,000. Legal Cheek’s 29 September 2025 compilation still supplies the 2025 cells for Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer at £145,000, Norton Rose Fulbright at £135,000, Travers Smith at £130,000, Eversheds Sutherland at £110,000, Pinsent Masons at £105,000, and Addleshaw Goddard and Mishcon de Reya at £100,000. Mayer Brown sat at £150,000 on that 2025 table: Magic Circle money, not Magic Circle membership. The mean across 100-plus listed firms in that snapshot was £118,756. That mean is a publisher average of disclosed rates, not the England-and-Wales solicitor median, and it is not a 2026 census.

Five published rungs on one axis. The shaded band is the 2026 contradiction: Magic Circle's 2024 lockstep still current in July 2026, against Quinn Emanuel's 1 July 2026 London print. The Law Society trainee floor and the GLD Legal Officer cell are different markets.

Solicitor pay across later PQE bands is a different page. Partner economics at London firms sit on partner pay at London law firms. The US class-year ladder that transmitted into the Quinn print sits on the 2026 BigLaw associate salary scale.

Magic Circle still prints the 2024 number. The 2026 floor sits in a US London office.

Who earns the figure, and who writes the check

The solicitor who earns the 2026 NQ cell sits on a practicing certificate inside a firm department. The general counsel who pays it is usually matching a 1 to 3 PQE hire, not staffing a day-one NQ.

Across 750 structured interviews with London associates, counsel and in-house lawyers, 118 of 162 respondents who sat as general counsel, chief legal officer or head of legal at London companies over a 24-month window told Sartori they still used Magic Circle NQ as the floor when they priced a 1 to 3 PQE company hire — including after the June 2026 US print. The table can move. The in-house reference price has not. That is the buyer’s lag, and it is why a company that opens a 2 PQE seat against “City NQ” without naming a tier is pricing against last cycle’s lockstep.

Of that same cohort, 89 of 140 associates who qualified in 2024, 2025 or 2026 over the same 24-month window said they ranked a US sterling letter above Magic Circle brand once the published gap cleared £20,000. A newly qualified solicitor at a US London private-equity office is not choosing between two UK locksteps. They are choosing between a 2024 UK-heritage cell and a 2026 US one. The general counsel who later tries to hire that person onto the payroll inherits that ranking.

A general counsel at a London-listed financial-services group told us they ran the in-house 2 PQE band off Magic Circle £150,000 until a US-firm qualifier refused the letter in 2026. A head of legal at a UK corporate on inbound M&A said they do not hire day-one NQs at all; they hire 2 to 3 PQE off the City table and treat the NQ cell as a reference, not a requisition. The Law Society’s in-house job-description template, dated 14 May 2025, lists general counsel, legal director, chief legal officer, head of legal, legal adviser and legal counsel. It does not list trainee. That is the company-side title set. It is not a 2026 in-house NQ census, and none was found.

The person who earns the 2026 NQ figure is a solicitor on a practicing certificate, almost always inside a law-firm department after a training contract or an SQE path.

Clifford Chance’s own London training-contract page, accessed in 2026, still prints first-year trainee £56,000, second-year £61,000 and newly qualified lawyer £150,000, with four seats including Debt Finance, Disputes, Tax and Private Equity. Legal Cheek, on 8 September 2026, recorded Clifford Chance recruiting around 100 trainees a year and keeping 37 of 45 in the autumn 2026 round, 82 percent, with all 45 applying. Linklaters also runs around 100 training contracts a year; autumn 2025 London retention was 33 of 40, 83 percent, Legal Cheek reported on 1 August 2025, plus four Asia-office trainees taking London NQ seats. Those factories pay the Magic Circle cell. They do not set the 2026 ceiling.

US-origin London offices are the employers at the top of the table. Kirkland & Ellis International LLP, SRA 349107, established in London in 1994, describes more than 500 attorneys focused on financial investors, private equity, real estate, special situations and funds, on the firm’s own London page. Paul, Weiss UK Early Careers recruits up to 10 London trainees, October intake, currently hiring for 2027 and 2028 starts, with practice labels on that page including private equity, public company M&A, debt finance, high-yield capital markets, tax, antitrust and FDI, restructuring, IP and technology, and investment funds. Legal Cheek, on 1 July 2024, recorded the program’s launch: inaugural cohort to start 2026, NQ then £180,000, London headcount then 108 lawyers. Quinn Emanuel pays the 2026 ceiling without a UK training contract: it buys NQs into commercial litigation. Perkins Coie, The Lawyer reported on 27 June 2024, designed a London path from legal-business-analyst seats through SQE, paid in line with the firm’s New York scale, with first-year analyst pay up to £50,000.

Qualification is an SRA gate before it is a pay cell. The pathways page, January 2025, and SQE Q&A updated 28 January 2026, require a degree or equivalent, SQE1 and SQE2, two years’ full-time qualifying work experience in no more than four organizations, and character and suitability. The LPC route remains open to 31 December 2032 for candidates in transitional arrangements. Qualifying work experience may be gained in a law firm, an in-house legal team, a clinic, a law center, a paralegal role or a training contract, the SRA QWE page updated 26 January 2024. Admission carries a £100 fee and Atlantic Data screening at £34; the SRA aims to admit within 30 days unless character issues arise. The first practicing certificate follows the chosen admission date; renewals run to 31 October. The individual practicing-certificate fee for 2025/26 is £326, in the Legal Services Board’s August 2025 decision notice. Clifford Chance adds a firm overlay: future trainees must complete SQE even if they have already passed the LPC, with first-attempt rules on PGDL modules, a PGDL commendation at a minimum 60 percent average, and first-attempt passes on SQE1, SQE2 and each module of the firm’s SQE Plus.

Practice labels that absorbed 2026 qualifiers, from The Lawyer’s 2026 live retention blog, are finance and projects, corporate and private equity, disputes, insurance, IP and real estate. Addleshaw Goddard’s autumn 2026 round kept 43 of 50, with 15 in finance and projects, 13 in corporate and commercial, 10 in disputes and 5 in real estate, and 16 of those seats in London. Pinsent Masons kept 53 of 72, with 18 in finance and projects, 16 in risk advisory and 14 in transactions. Magic Circle often withholds the practice-area split: Clifford Chance autumn 2026, Linklaters autumn 2025 and A&O Shearman did not disclose destinations. A Magic Circle NQ cannot be labeled “corporate” from those rounds without a firm-level disclosure.

The person who pays the 2026 figure on day one is a law firm. The general counsel, chief legal officer or head of legal matches it when they hire off the table onto the company payroll.

Law Society Annual Statistics Report 2023, covering August 2022 to July 2023 and published 23 January 2025, counted 35,738 in-house practicing-certificate holders, 22 percent of the stock, with the largest growth in commerce and industry. Private-practice share had fallen to 59 percent from 69 percent in 2014. That is the latest Society cut for the in-house share. It is not a count of day-one NQs moving in-house, and that percentage is omitted because it was not found. The SRA’s July 2026 practicing count supersedes the 2023 stock; the 22 percent in-house share is still the Society’s last published split.

Company-side hiring off this table is a qualified-lawyer requisition. Barclays’ own careers posting dated 3 September 2026 for a Financial Crime Lawyer at Canary Wharf required a qualified lawyer — solicitor, barrister, attorney or equivalent — with AML, sanctions and ABC advisory experience. That is not an NQ. Funds and sponsors are clients of the US and Magic Circle NQ desks, not typical NQ employers: no 2026 “NQ solicitor, PE house, London” careers page was found. Treat sponsor legal teams as later-PQE in-house buyers. A chief legal officer who wants the 2026 NQ skill set on payroll is buying a 1 to 3 PQE seat priced against the firm-tier table, not reprinting Quinn Emanuel’s £189,000 as an in-house band.

Public bodies are the other payer of an NQ solicitor, and they do not use the City table. The Government Legal Profession scheme, last updated 14 April 2026, places trainees in the Government Legal Department, HMRC, the National Crime Agency and the Competition and Markets Authority. After two years, GLD hopes to offer a permanent qualified role at Legal Officer, then regrade to Grade 7 after one year PQE. The academic gate is a minimum 2:2 honors; on the SQE route, SQE1 and SQE2 must be passed before qualifying work experience starts; there is no work-permit sponsorship. The next trainee-solicitor campaign is expected in April 2027. Grade 7 London spot rates for April 2024 to March 2025 were £61,200, £65,250 and £67,273; Grade 6 London Level 3 was £81,000. GOV.UK trainee cells on 14 April 2026: GLD year one £34,695 and year two £39,645; NCA London year one £36,057 and year two £45,326 plus London weighting of about £4,218; HMRC London year one £42,631 and year two £42,752.

Client secondments sit a trainee inside a company and then return them to the firm NQ. Clifford Chance states that over a quarter of its trainees are on secondment at any given time. That is still a firm employment contract. It is not the company becoming the qualification employer. A head of legal who uses secondments as a try-before-you-hire window is borrowing a City NQ, not paying one.

04 The transmission

How a New York lockstep moved a London cell

The 2026 number above Magic Circle is produced by a US associate-scale cycle, not a UK statute. Magic Circle last moved in 2024. Transatlantic mergers change who pays the UK-heritage cell, not the US ceiling.

Bloomberg Law, on 17 June 2026, recorded that on 2 June 2026 Milbank announced a new US associate pay scale, plus $10,000 to $20,000 by seniority, $235,000 for a first-year through $455,000 for an eighth-year. Above the Law, on 2 June 2026, put the new scale effective 1 July 2026. Law.com, on 4 June 2026, reported Quinn Emanuel matching: first- through fourth-years plus $10,000, fifth-years and above plus $20,000, bonuses effective 1 July 2026. Legal Cheek, on 5 June 2026, then printed the London consequence: NQ £189,000, from £180,000, following Quinn’s US lift in response to similar increases rolled out by Milbank and McDermott Will & Emery. That is press-reported firm matching, not a regulator series. Magic Circle £150,000 did not move with it.

Two combinations changed who writes the UK-heritage check. A&O Shearman completed on 1 May 2024: nearly 4,000 lawyers, about 800 partners, about $3.5 billion combined revenue, 28 countries, Reuters adding 47 offices. The Lawyer’s 2026 retention live blog noted that the merger led to larger autumn trainee cohorts and thus lower retention rates. Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer launched on 1 June 2025, Bloomberg Law reporting on 4 April 2025 a combination of more than $2 billion in revenue, about 2,700 lawyers and about 630 partners. Spring 2026 retention at that platform was 26 of 33. Those mergers change the name on the Magic Circle or Silver Circle cell. They do not reprint Quinn Emanuel’s £189,000.

US London build-out is the structural substitute for Magic Circle NQ demand at the top of the table. Paul Weiss launched a London training contract for a 2026 inaugural cohort at an NQ then printed as £180,000. Kirkland already sits above 500 attorneys in London. White & Case takes about 50 new trainees a year. Ropes runs 24 trainees on four six-month seats and recorded 100 percent retention of its September 2025 NQ intake; Kirkland retained all 12 of its November 2025 qualifiers, The Lawyer reported on 10 March 2026. The seats that earn the 2026 premium are private equity, funds, leveraged finance and disputes. A general counsel buying that work is buying hours staffed at a US London NQ cost, even when the instruction letter still says Magic Circle.

05 Supply

More solicitors, fewer firms, a thicker SQE pipe

England and Wales added solicitors in the year to July 2026 while the stock of authorized firms shrank. SQE is now a material share of admissions. That changes who can sit in a US London NQ seat, not what Magic Circle prints.

The Solicitors Regulation Authority’s population table, accessed in September 2026, recorded 178,428 practicing solicitors in England and Wales in July 2026 and 214,080 on the roll, with 7,674 registered foreign lawyers. July 2025 practicing stood at 173,017; July 2024 at 167,648. Those are national envelopes, not a London NQ headcount, and they are not converted into one. TheCityUK’s 2025 report, published 9 December 2025, put London legal-services employment at 128,000 jobs and real GVA at £14,855 million on 2023-vintage ONS and Nomis figures labeled as latest at publication, against a UK total of 364,000 legal-services jobs. All of the world’s top 50 law firms have London offices, employing more than 8,500 lawyers, mainly UK-qualified, with more than 200 foreign firms from about 40 jurisdictions. The Commercial Court’s 2024 caseload was 72 percent international; the Patents Court 80 percent; the Competition List 54 percent. UK ADR resolved 31,514 civil disputes by arbitration, mediation or adjudication in 2024. That is sector output under the NQ table, not a hiring forecast.

Admissions in the 12 months to July 2026 totalled 9,944: LPC plus period of recognized training 5,391, 54 percent; SQE 4,019, 40 percent. The prior 12 months to July 2025 ran 9,665 total, LPC 6,243, 65 percent, SQE 2,933, 30 percent. The SRA Board paper of March 2026, covering the fourth full SQE year, recorded more than 16,200 individual candidates in 2024/25, from 14,600. SQE1 first-time pass was 60 percent in January 2025 and 46 percent in July 2025; SQE2 overall pass ran 75 to 82 percent across four sittings. Fees set for 2026/27: SQE1 £2,006, from £1,934; SQE2 £3,086, from £2,974. Apprentices were about 8.5 percent of assessments, from 5 percent. Mishcon’s autumn 2026 round retained two six-year solicitor apprentices as associates. The LPC transitional path to 31 December 2032 still feeds Magic Circle and Silver Circle factories. The SQE pipe is how a US office without a traditional two-year training contract still staffs an England-and-Wales NQ.

Firm stock is shrinking while solicitor headcount rises. The SRA counted 8,916 head offices in June 2026 against 9,057 in June 2025: 1,327 sole practices, 906 partnerships, 5,234 incorporated, 1,421 LLPs and 28 other. Openings in the 12 months to May 2026 were 346; closures in the 12 months to March 2026 were 519. The Legal Services Board’s August 2025 decision notice on the 2025/26 practicing fee budgeted for the equivalent of 182,000 individuals and about 9,100 firms paying, with total practicing-certificate fee income of £148.4 million, the individual share £59.4 million. NQ demand concentrates in surviving City and US offices, not in a growing high-street firm count. Law Society ASR 2023 projected 218,658 solicitors by 2027 and about 33,000 admissions across 2024 to 2027; those are 2023-window projections, not 2026 observed NQ seats.

Autumn and spring retention among the UK-heritage factories that still print the Magic Circle NQ cell, plus Macfarlanes after the July 2026 match. Retention is a business-need decision inside the firm, not a company hiring rate.

Legal Cheek, 8 September 2026 and 1 August 2025; The Lawyer live retention 2026; The Lawyer, 10 April 2026 and 6 May 2026; The Lawyer, 4 September 2026.

The published step from first-year trainee stipend to NQ at four employers that disclose both cells. White & Case's January 2025 step is the largest on this set. Government Legal Department is a grade table, not a City lockstep.

06 The work

The files that sit under the 2026 sticker

The sticker moved because a US scale moved. The files those NQs actually staff sit inside a thicker UK rule stack: national security, listing rules, consumer duty, digital-markets competition, failure to prevent fraud, carried interest and employment reform.

National-security filings are now a volume product on private-equity and public M&A desks. The National Security and Investment Act 2021 has been fully in force since 4 January 2022: the government can scrutinize, condition, unwind or block qualifying acquisitions, with mandatory notification in 17 sensitive areas including AI and civil nuclear, and a 30-working-day review after a complete notification is accepted. The Cabinet Office collection was last updated 22 August 2026; the 2025–26 annual report was published 14 July 2026; a consultation on Notifiable Acquisition Regulations opened 12 March 2026. That consultation is a rule tweak, not a repeal. The NQ on a Magic Circle, US or Silver Circle corporate desk who drafts the notification is staffing a live statute. So is the in-house counsel at the acquirer, usually later than NQ.

Capital-markets rules moved earlier than any 2026 NQ raise. The Financial Conduct Authority’s Policy Statement PS24/6, published 11 July 2024, put rewritten UK Listing Rules in force on 29 July 2024: premium and standard segments replaced by a single commercial-companies category, disclosure-based, described by the FCA as the most significant changes to the UK listing regime in over three decades. Affected parties explicitly include law firms in the advisory community. Paul Weiss names public company M&A as a London trainee practice. That is a deal-structure driver, not an NQ pay driver. Consumer Duty is further into embedding: open products from 31 July 2023, closed products from 31 July 2024, first annual board report due 31 July 2024. From 27 February 2025 the FCA no longer expects a Board Duty champion, per the information-for-firms page updated 5 August 2026. Bank in-house seats on that file are qualified, not typically day-one NQ.

Digital markets and consumer enforcement thickened the competition seat. The Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 received Royal Assent on 24 May 2024. The CMA Digital Markets Unit sits on a statutory footing, with Strategic Market Status, conduct requirements, pro-competition interventions, and consumer-law fines up to 10 percent of global turnover. Consumer-law enforcement and the unfair-practices regime came into force on 6 April 2025. The CMA itself hires NQs via the Government Legal Profession. Magic Circle, US and HSF Kramer competition teams staff the company side. Failure to prevent fraud, under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023, came into force on 1 September 2025: large organizations can be criminally liable if an associated person commits fraud intending to benefit the organization, unless reasonable prevention procedures were in place. Guidance was published 6 November 2024 and updated 10 October 2025. 2026 NQs in investigations and white-collar seats enter a market that already needs the product. In-house investigations counsel at large corporates is a post-NQ hire.

Two 2026 go-lives sit on funds, tax and employment. Carried interest is treated as trading profits from 6 April 2026, Income Tax plus Class 4 NICs, with qualifying amounts taxed on 72.5 percent of qualifying profits after a holding-period test, per the HMRC and Treasury note published 21 July 2025. Exchequer scoring runs minus £5 million in 2026–27 then plus £140 million in 2027–28. That is a funds and tax hiring driver at US and Magic Circle practices, and an in-house counsel seat at London PE houses, not a reason Magic Circle froze NQ pay. The Employment Rights Act 2025 received Royal Assent on 18 December 2025, with unfair dismissal after six months instead of two years, and a phased implementation over two years; section 1 was in force on 6 January 2026 for specified purposes. Employment NQs at City employment groups inherit a live reform. The Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act also gave the SRA a new information power over all regulated firms, closing a gap of about 3,200 firms outside the money-laundering regulations, per the GOV.UK factsheet updated 1 March 2024. That thickens the compliance file inside firms; it is not an NQ headcount boom.

A general counsel who still uses Magic Circle as the floor is matching last cycle's lockstep.

How a London search actually closes against this table

We have worked the London associate market for more than 10 years, for companies that put solicitors on the payroll and for the firms that print the NQ cell. The envelope is one line. The US sterling letter is what stretches it.

Over the trailing three years we closed 33 associate searches on the London line, at a 93 percent completion rate, on a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks, with a median 12 working days from offer to acceptance and a 35 percent counter-offer incidence. Of those 33 closed files, 14 were newly qualified or 1 PQE seats. Nine of those 14 collided with a US London sterling letter already on the table. Six of those 14 ran past twelve weeks before they closed. That is the finding that does not flatter the method: the envelope holds on ordinary City associate files and stretches when the competing bid is a US print and the brief still names Magic Circle as the floor.

In 6 of those 14 NQ-year files the training firm tabled a counter-offer. Three of those six lawyers still left. Sartori’s quarterly survey since 2019 finds London in-house hiring managers describing the NQ cell as a reference price for a 2 PQE requisition, not as a day-one company salary. A general counsel, chief legal officer or head of legal who needs the 2026 skill set on the payroll has to price that requisition against the tier actually on offer.

Three composites from that telemetry, described by category only. A London-listed financial-services group asked us to take a 2 PQE financial-services regulatory associate off a Magic Circle training contract onto the company payroll after Consumer Duty embedding. The search closed in 9 weeks. The firm counter-offered inside the 12-day window; the lawyer still moved. The general counsel’s constraint was not the NQ sticker. It was whether the in-house band, built off £150,000, could look credible next to a US peer set already printing £175,000 to £180,000 for the same qualification year.

A UK corporate running inbound M&A, with an NSI notification in the file, asked for a 1 to 2 PQE hire into the legal team so that mandatory-notification drafting did not sit entirely on panel. The search closed in 11 weeks. The head of legal had to re-brief the board on why the in-house number now had to clear a US London competing bid, not the Magic Circle cell they had modeled in 2025. The National Security and Investment Act did not raise NQ pay. It raised the cost of leaving the seat empty.

A private-capital house tried to hire a funds NQ off a US London training contract onto an investments-legal seat in time for the 6 April 2026 carried-interest go-live. The file was one of the six that ran to 14 weeks. The house’s in-house band could not clear £175,000. We closed the search by widening the brief to a 3 PQE who would trade some cash for a first in-house seat. That is a different person than the NQ table describes, and it is the honest outcome when the company will not match the US cell. Why NQ pay does not retain an in-house seat belongs to why NQ pay attracts but does not retain. The in-house number, once the person is on payroll, sits on private practice versus in-house pay and in-house counsel salary 2026.

Trainee stipends against NQ at four employers that disclose both. This is the step, not the firm-tier NQ census above. Macfarlanes’ 2026 trainee cells sit above Magic Circle’s published trainee cells while NQ matches.

Law Society recommended London trainee minimum for 2025/26 is £28,090, rest of England and Wales £24,916, a 2.45 percent CPI step, effective from September 2025 and voluntary since 2014. DLA London trainees were recorded at £52,000 and £57,000, regional £35,500 and £39,000, in the Law Gazette on 22 July 2025 — a 2025 trainee vintage, not mixed into DLA’s July 2026 NQ cell.

08 Method

Firm announcements, SRA tables, statutes and one London research program

Published NQ cells with the year inside each one, regulator series, employer careers pages, and Sartori's London associate line. Not a guessed in-house NQ and not a partner-pay ranking.

Sartori & Partners maps nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles globally and has run quarterly market surveys since 2019. The London associate findings come from one city program: one interview cohort, 33 closed associate searches over three years, a 35 percent counter-offer rate, a median 12 working days from offer to acceptance, a 93 percent completion rate, and a typical 6-to-12-week timeline. Google Ads Keyword Planner, four-country extract, 11 September 2026, recorded 330 monthly searches on the NQ query these cells answer.

Public pay cells are firm-confirmed bases as reported by Legal Cheek, The Lawyer, Legal Business, Bloomberg Law, Law.com International, the Law Gazette and employer careers pages, including Clifford Chance, Kirkland, Paul Weiss and GOV.UK. Retention counts are Legal Cheek and The Lawyer dated rounds. Regulatory counts are from the SRA, the Legal Services Board, the Law Society, the FCA, GOV.UK, legislation.gov.uk and TheCityUK. The SRA’s July 2026 population table records 178,428 solicitors holding a practicing certificate; that national envelope is not converted into a London NQ census. Dollar-to-sterling conversions are used only as the publisher printed them: Kirkland $225,000 as £175,000 on the firm’s rate, or just over £174,000 in The Lawyer; Akin, Morrison Foerster and Paul Hastings $225,000 as £167,000 on 1 September 2025 in Legal Cheek. No independent spot rate is applied.

Adjacent pages own adjacent questions. The US class-year ladder sits on the 2026 BigLaw associate salary scale. A general counsel hiring the person onto payroll, once they are no longer an NQ, sits on general counsel salary 2026 and how Sartori maps a market.

NQ salary 2026: common questions

What is nq solicitor salary at Magic Circle versus US London offices in 2026?

£150,000 versus £189,000 on the published bases. The Lawyer still treated Magic Circle London NQ as £150,000 on 2 July 2026, last reset between 1 May and 1 September 2024. Legal Cheek reported on 5 June 2026 that Quinn Emanuel would pay £189,000 from 1 July 2026. That £39,000 gap is the live window a general counsel matches against, not a blended City average.

What is a trainee solicitor salary at Magic Circle and US London firms in 2026?

Clifford Chance still lists £56,000 then £61,000. Macfarlanes moves trainees to £60,000 and £65,000 from September 2026. White & Case, in The Lawyer on 1 August 2024, set first-year trainees at £62,000 and second-year at £67,000 from January 2025. Those stipends are not City NQ, and the Law Society recommended London trainee floor for 2025/26 is a different market at £28,090.

What does a London general counsel actually pay when hiring off this table?

Almost never the day-one NQ cell as an in-house salary. Commerce-and-industry desks hire qualified lawyers, typically at 1 to 3 years’ PQE, and match against the City table rather than printing it. A Barclays Financial Crime Lawyer posting dated 3 September 2026 asked for a qualified lawyer with advisory experience, not an NQ. No 2026 in-house NQ census was published in the sources used here and is omitted.

How much does a Government Legal Department NQ earn against the City table?

£47,541 as Legal Officer on the April 2023 scale. FOI 24_589, dated 27 August 2024, still cited that spot rate; newly qualified GLD lawyers regrade to Grade 7 after one year PQE. Grade 7 London spot rates for April 2024 to March 2025 ran £61,200, £65,250 and £67,273. That is a public-body grade table, not a Magic Circle lockstep.

How long does a London newly qualified associate search take?

Typically 6 to 12 weeks on Sartori’s London associate line, with a median 12 working days from offer to acceptance and a 93 percent completion rate across 33 closed searches over three years. Files that open against a US sterling letter already on the table run long: 6 of 14 NQ-year mandates in that telemetry passed twelve weeks before they closed.

Does SQE change who can earn the 2026 City NQ figure?

Yes: 40 percent of 9,944 admissions in the year to July 2026 already used SQE. The SRA routes-to-admission table is an England-and-Wales series, not a London NQ headcount. Firms without a UK training contract, including Quinn Emanuel, can buy from that SQE pool. The LPC transitional path remains open to 31 December 2032.
