Osborne Clarke Salary 2026: the London NQ companies cannot fill.

The firm's own graduate site posted London newly qualified base at £100,000 on 11 September 2026. A general counsel matching that number to a junior in-house seat is matching a floor, not a clearing price.

The dated number, and the search it does not close.

A general counsel who prices a junior in-house seat to the Osborne Clarke nq salary is matching a London figure of £100,000 that the firm's graduate site still posted on 11 September 2026. Sartori maps London as a coverage file of roughly 30,000 practicing lawyers. The companies that hire from that qualifier class are not looking at a public associate ladder, because one does not exist.

Lens 01 · The posted number London newly qualified base is posted at £100,000.

Osborne Clarke's graduate Training & development page, accessed 11 September 2026, states London first-year trainee £57,000, second-year £59,000, and £100,000 once qualified. That is advertised base, not total cash. The careers page is the primary document.

The post is real, dated and office-specific. The search a company runs against it is a different object. The three-office scale is the next block.

Osborne Clarke LLP trains in three UK offices — One London Wall, Halo Bristol and Reading — and posts a different newly qualified base in each. The table below is that 2026 post, accessed from the graduate Training & development page on 11 September 2026. It is advertised annual base. It is not total cash, not a lockstep after qualification, and not an in-house offer letter.

03 Two readers

The same sterling figure, two different jobs.

One reader earns the 2026 post. The other has to match it. They do not need the same paragraph.

Sartori has worked the London associate market for more than 10 years. Over the trailing three years the desk closed 33 associate searches, with a 93 percent completion rate and a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks. Quarterly market surveys have run since 2019 against a global mapping file of nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles. The London interview cohort is the one already named above. What follows is a cut of that cohort.

Across that cohort, 54 of 97 general counsel, chief legal officers and heads of legal at London TMT, energy-transition, housebuilding and PE-portfolio companies, interviewed over a 24-month window, said they had used a UK-international NQ post as the matching number for a junior in-house requisition. The post is convenient. Finance will sign it. It is also the number a US London office can beat without running a training contract.

The published number is base. Cash around it is a pool, a percentage from a prior year, or not public.

  • The 2024 all-staff share is the last cash rate on the record. The firm paid 5 percent of salary to qualifying UK colleagues in June 2024, with a £2,000 minimum. Legal Cheek, on 5 July 2024, put a London NQ at as much as £4,500 on that percentage. The 2026 pool is £9.1 million; a personal 2026 percentage is not stated.
  • Long-term incentive is a cap, not a promise. The 2 July 2024 results described bonuses of up to 40 percent paid over three years, with first-year payments in August 2024. Whether a 2026 qualifier sits inside that scheme is not on the graduate page.
  • Training support is a grant, not salary. Legal Cheek’s Money box records a PGDL grant of £11,330 and an SQE grant of £15,500 in London. Those figures fund the route in. They do not move the NQ base.

A chief legal officer matching the post is competing with retention and with US London offices that do not train in England and Wales.

  • Panel language already names in-house talent as a criterion. When Osborne Clarke was reappointed to BT Group’s legal panel on 18 April 2024, the panel was cut from 15 firms to 11 and selection included the ability to support the development of BT Group’s in-house legal talent, alongside cost, experience, DEI and AI use. The buyer is the in-house desk, not the law firm.
  • A utility framework is a four-year legal-services buy, not an NQ ad. National Grid’s UK Legal Services Agreement, published on Contracts Finder on 7 March 2025, runs from 1 February 2025 to 31 January 2029 at a total value of £250,000,000. Osborne Clarke LLP is an awarded supplier across advisory, corporate, planning, DCO, infrastructure and regulatory lots. The in-house counterpart is National Grid legal services.
  • The live ads are not the seat you are buying. Associate Director construction (energy transition, posted 4 August 2026) and Planning Associate Director (posted 13 August 2026) are the public hiring labels. A company that copies those titles onto an NQ requisition is writing the wrong job.
The number finance would sign was the posted NQ. The number that cleared the market was not.

04 Who hires them

The companies already buying the work, and the titles they actually use.

The first buyer of an Osborne Clarke qualifier is still Osborne Clarke. The companies that then try to hire that person sit in TMT, energy transition, housebuilding, funds and a minority public-body desk.

Training-contract vacancies for September 2029 are posted as 30 places: 13 in London, 14 in Bristol, 3 in Reading, with applications opening 1 October 2026. The 2023 round retained 26 of 30, 87 percent, and the training principal told Legal Cheek one departing trainee had taken an in-house role with a client. That is a single documented path, not a series.

Loop South West, on 9 October 2024, repeating the firm’s 86 percent release, put the 2024 qualifier geography at 19 London, 16 Bristol and 3 Reading. London NQ seats that year included Corporate, Banking, Corporate Tax, Financial Services, Planning, IP Disputes, Commercial, Commercial Disputes, Projects, Employment, Regulatory Disputes and Construction & Engineering Disputes. Those are practice labels, not a 2026 vacancy list.

UK income growth by named sector, year ended 30 April 2026, as reported by Global Legal Post on 29 July 2026 from the firm's results. This is sector revenue, not a hiring plan.

Global Legal Post, 29 July 2026, reporting Osborne Clarke FY2025/26 results.

Across the same London interview cohort, 29 of 41 energy-transition and construction associates, interviewed over that 24-month window, said the live hiring label in their practice was Senior Associate or Associate Director, not newly qualified. The Construction Associate Director advertisement posted on 4 August 2026 is the public corroboration: a team band of 1 Legal Director, 2 Associate Directors, 6 Senior Associates, 2 Associates, 2 Trainees and 1 Paralegal, on EPC, FIDIC and NEC work for funds and generators.

Chambers UK 2026 records 59 ranked departments for the firm, with London Information Technology & Outsourcing in Band 1. That ranking is why TMT in-house desks already know the name. It is not a salary scale. Reading, on the graduate site, is described as the desk for US clients entering the UK and for venture and private-equity investors; the firm homepage, accessed 11 September 2026, announced a Luxembourg office on 3 September 2026 and a Frankfurt office opening 1 September 2026 for private equity, M&A, finance and technology. Funds counsel at a PE house is hiring against that footprint, not against the London NQ cell.

Company types already on the record as buying Osborne Clarke work, the in-house title those desks use in public materials, and the 2026 law-firm hiring label that is actually advertised. Employer names in this table are market-landscape facts, not case studies.

OC Solutions sits between those desks and the partnership: lawyers, consultants, legal engineers and project managers who, on the Solutions page accessed 11 September 2026, collaborate with in-house teams. Public titles quoted there include Chief Legal Officer at a veterinary consolidator and Group Head of Legal, Intellectual Property and Investigations. Trainees are encouraged to take a Solutions seat. A company that wants that hybrid profile is not hiring an NQ at the graduate-page number; it is hiring a product the firm already sells into the GC office.

The North Sea Transition Authority mandate, announced 16 December 2024, is the public-body end of the same stack: offshore licensing, legislative obligations and financial security on UK carbon-capture clusters, against a government figure of £21.7 billion of CCUS support. Legal Cheek, on 12 August 2026, put Simmons & Simmons Bristol NQ at £104,000 against Osborne Clarke’s £76,000. A West of England general counsel matching Bristol NQ is matching the lower of those two City-equivalent posts.

05 Why the number fails

Matching the graduate page is not a search strategy.

Sartori's London associate telemetry is 33 closed files, not a survey. The uncomfortable pattern inside it is how often the public NQ post, once copied onto a company requisition, becomes the reason the file overruns.

Of those 14 in-house NQ-to-4 PQE searches inside the 33, 9 were first-priced at or within £5,000 of a UK-international NQ post. Six of those 9 did not close on the first approved band. Sartori does not fill faster when the company insists on matching a published NQ cell the candidate has already priced against a US London bid. That is the finding that cuts against the easy story of a technical desk that always lands the hire inside the envelope.

Across 750 structured interviews with London associates and counsel — the same cohort — 88 of 132 newly qualified and one-to-three PQE lawyers at UK-international firms, interviewed over a 24-month window, said they would not accept an in-house seat priced at the posted Osborne Clarke London NQ if a US London or Magic Circle NQ offer was live. The remaining 44 in that cut would take the company seat for scope, hours or a shorter commute. The 88 are the reason a copied cell fails.

Mandate telemetry on the full 33 files records a 35 percent counter-offer incidence and a median of 12 working days from offer to acceptance. When a US London competing bid is on the table, that 12-day median is the clock the general counsel is actually running, not the six-to-twelve-week search plan finance approved.

The last on-record Osborne Clarke London NQ move, reported by Legal Cheek on 19 August 2024, was 2.7 percent, from £91,500 to £94,000. The Office for National Statistics, on 17 September 2025, put CPI at 3.8 percent in the 12 months to August 2025. Legal Cheek’s 29 September 2025 London table put the average NQ at £118,756 and Magic Circle NQ at £150,000, with 18 US outfits in London then paying more than £170,000. A 2026 post at £100,000 is a firm floor that has not closed the gap those comparators opened.

London newly qualified bases a general counsel is actually bidding against, not Osborne Clarke's own three-office table. The shaded span runs from the firm's posted London NQ to the US London bid that does not require a training contract.

Willkie’s London NQ, reported by Legal Cheek on 12 March 2026, sat at £180,000, with Ropes & Gray at £170,000. Above the Law, on 5 June 2026, recorded Milbank’s US first-year move to $235,000 from 2 June 2026. The full US class-year ladder is a different page; the only use of that dollar figure here is as the structural competitor for the same qualifier. A company that wants the US-firm version of this person is not running an Osborne Clarke search.

Two composite files from the 14, described by category only. A TMT general counsel priced a junior commercial seat at the posted London NQ, reached a shortlist in week five, and lost the preferred candidate in week nine to a US London NQ. A PE-backed energy-transition platform converted a six-month construction secondment into an in-house offer at the same public figure; the candidate went back to the firm’s associate-director track, and the company reset the band in week fourteen. Both files sit inside the 33. Neither named a person or an employer.

We had the secondee for six months and still could not convert the seat at the public figure.

06 The statute stack

Demand is coming from commencement dates, not from the pay table.

The seats a company is trying to fill with an Osborne Clarke qualifier were created by a 2024-to-2026 statute stack. The NQ post does not move when a statutory clock starts.

The Competition and Markets Authority’s annual merger-investigation outcomes, updated 10 September 2026, record 881 mergers considered in calendar 2025, with 39 Phase 1 investigations and 4 Phase 2. That is fewer considered files than 2024 (1,037) and fewer Phase 2 files than 2023 (10). The Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 raised the UK turnover threshold to £100 million from 1 January 2025. A chief legal officer at a PE-backed mid-market buyer is staffing Phase 1 remedy design, not an NQ volume spike.

The CMA opened its fourth strategic-market-status investigation, into Microsoft’s business software ecosystem, on 14 May 2026, with a statutory decision deadline of 13 February 2027 and a stated base of more than 15 million commercial users. Automated-decision-making rules under the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 came into force on 5 February 2026 (S.I. 2026/82). Unfair-dismissal remainder under the Employment Rights Act 2025 is commenced for 1 January 2027 (S.I. 2026/559). None of those clocks pays a newly qualified solicitor £100,000; they create the mid-level TMT, data and employment seats the live ads are already chasing.

Instruments that create the work behind a 2026 Osborne Clarke qualifier, with the commencement date on the face of the statutory instrument or the government release. Dates are the hiring clock. They are not a pay rise.

FCA CP26/28 UK AIFM regime consultation; almost £2 trillion in alternative assets; implementation envisaged 2028 Opened 14 July 2026 Funds counsel at AIFMs and depositaries

DESNZ and HM Treasury, on 24 April 2025, announced HyNet transmission-and-storage financial close and restated £21.7 billion allocated to CCUS in October 2024, with construction from mid-2025 and operations from 2028. The ONS, on 1 September 2026, recorded 353 combined UK control-changing deals of £1 million or more in the second quarter of 2026, down from 407 in the first quarter, with inward value at £25.4 billion. Domestic deal count in that quarter was 130 against 241 in the second quarter of 2025. Corporate and leveraged-finance associates still have inbound work; a general counsel staffing a domestic mid-market M&A seat off the OC NQ post is staffing into the weaker leg of that cycle.

The FCA’s UK AIFM consultation, first published 14 July 2026, puts UK asset managers at almost £2 trillion in alternative assets and over £16 trillion in AUM, with a new three-tier AIFM structure aimed at 2028. The Funds Senior Knowledge Lawyer and Banking Senior Associate ads already on the 2026 careers list are the immediate law-firm response. In-house funds counsel at an AIFM will staff the implementation, not the NQ cell.

07 Bonus and PEP

Partner pay is an average. Junior cash is a pool. Neither is a ladder.

UK profits per equity partner were £805,000 for the year ended 30 April 2026. That ratio does not tell an NQ what they will earn, and it does not tell a chief legal officer what to put on a requisition.

The firm, on 29 July 2026, said UK PEP “remained strong at £805k” on UK income of £271.0 million and UK net profit of £93.8 million, a 35 percent net margin. Five-year UK income moved from £199 million in 2021/22 to £271 million in 2025/26, a 36 percent rise. Legal Business, on 29 July 2026, framed the PEP print as a slight dip against the £806,000 it had reported on 30 July 2025. International revenue was €593.9 million, up 8.4 percent. None of those figures is an associate bonus.

Global Legal Post, on 29 July 2026, reported Disputes & Risk as the most profitable practice group at 71 percent gross and 36 percent net margins, with Projects, Real Estate and Finance and Advisory each recording the highest income growth at 9 percent. That is why a disputes or projects NQ is a different hire from a quiet commercial seat. It is not a published PQE band.

The UK promotion pipeline shrank in public view: 11 promotions in the May 2024 round, 10 in FY2024/25, then six new UK partners and two legal directors effective 1 May 2026. An associate reading PEP as a personal trajectory is reading an average over a narrower equity gate. A general counsel reading PEP as a proxy for junior cash is reading the wrong line.

The For Good Responsible Business Report 2025 put the UK firm at 1,319 people and 176 partners, with turnover stated as £257 million — a rounded companion to the £256.6 million results release, not a third financial year. The April 2025 pay-gap snapshot recorded a bonus in the reporting year for 87 percent of women and 84 percent of men, and an employee mean gender pay gap of 14.8 percent. Bonus incidence is high. Bonus quantum by class year is not in that PDF.

A third composite, again category only: the head of legal at a listed housebuilder took a planning-and-legal-operations brief to market at the posted London NQ, because that was the number the finance committee would sign. The preferred candidate — an Osborne Clarke planning associate on a client secondment — accepted a US London NQ three weeks after offer. The file closed later, on a reset band, inside the 33 and past the typical timeline. The lesson for a chief legal officer is mechanical. Price the seat against the competing bid the candidate can actually take, then decide whether an NQ from this firm is still the hire. If the work is Associate Director construction or funds, write that seat. Do not photocopy the graduate page.

Associates weighing the same figure should read it as office-specific base plus a pool that is no longer stated as a personal percentage, sitting under a PEP average that will not be their number. The US London bid and the Magic Circle cell are the competing offers. The in-house conversion, when it happens, is a secondment conversation with a named GC office, not a job-board NQ. For the company-side search, start with in-house and general counsel recruiting. For the associate reading their own class year, guidance for associates is the private route. UK-wide NQ retention sits on a sibling page; London in-house bands sit on the London in-house salary article. Neither is this firm’s scale.

Osborne Clarke pay in 2026: questions from both sides of the figure

What is the Osborne Clarke nq salary in London in 2026?

Osborne Clarke's own graduate site, accessed 11 September 2026, posts London newly qualified base at £100,000. Legal Cheek's firm profile still listed £97,000 on the same day; treat the careers page as the primary document. That figure is advertised base, not total cash, and it sits below Legal Cheek's 29 September 2025 London average of £118,756.

What does Osborne Clarke pay newly qualified solicitors in Bristol and Reading?

The same 11 September 2026 graduate page posts Reading NQ at £90,000 and Bristol NQ at £76,000. Legal Cheek, on 12 August 2026, used that Bristol figure as the comparator when Simmons & Simmons moved Bristol NQ to £104,000. Trainee rungs sit underneath: Reading £51,300 then £53,100; Bristol £50,500 then £52,500.

Does Osborne Clarke publish an associate salary scale by PQE year?

No. A 1PQE-to-8PQE sterling ladder does not appear on the firm site, in Legal Cheek's Money box, or in the 2024, 2025 or 2026 results releases. Reward language on 2026 vacancy pages is contribution and potential rather than tenure. Any interpolated mid-level band on this page would be an invention; it is omitted.

What is Osborne Clarke partner pay in 2026?

UK profits per equity partner were £805,000 for the year ended 30 April 2026, the firm said on 29 July 2026. That is an average of distributable profit, not a paycheck. Legal Business, the same week, framed it as a slight dip against £806,000 the prior year. The firm does not publish how that average is split.

Can a general counsel fill a junior in-house seat by matching Osborne Clarke's posted London NQ?

No. Six of 14 in-house junior searches inside 33 London associate files overran a 6-to-12-week timeline after the company matched a public NQ post. Quinn Emanuel's London NQ, reported by Legal Cheek on 5 June 2026, sat at £189,000 with no UK training contract. The posted £100,000 is the firm's floor, not the clearing price.

What bonus does an Osborne Clarke junior actually receive?

The UK profit-share and bonus pool was £9.1 million for the year ended 30 April 2026, up 12 percent year on year. The last all-staff cash rate on the record is 5 percent of salary, paid June 2024, with a £2,000 minimum; Legal Cheek then put a London NQ at as much as £4,500. A 2026 personal percentage is not public.

Posted trainee and NQ figures are advertised annual bases, not total cash and not a PQE ladder. Legal Cheek's compiled Money box lagged the graduate page on London and Reading when both were accessed on 11 September 2026; this article follows the employer careers page where they disagree. PEP is average distributable profit per equity partner, not a draw. The £9.1 million pool is a firm-level total, not a class-year bonus. Sector and practice growth rates are income, not headcount. CMA and ONS volumes are completed or considered deals, not Osborne Clarke mandates. Sartori figures on this page come from 750 London structured interviews and 33 closed associate searches, with 35 percent counter-offer incidence and a 12-working-day median offer-to-acceptance.

Cohort reads, mandate telemetry and offer-window figures come from the continuous research program set out on our research page — structured interviews, quarterly surveys since 2019, and closed-file telemetry on the London associate line.

A quiet conversation

If you are a general counsel or chief legal officer pricing a junior in-house hire against Osborne Clarke's 2026 London post, we will tell you whether that number can clear before you open the search. Confidential, no obligation.
