International Trade Associate or Counsel (Export Controls)

Our client, an international law firm with offices across the United States, Europe, and the Middle East, is seeking an associate or counsel to join its International Trade practice in Boston, Chicago, Denver, New York, or Washington, DC.

This role focuses on advising clients on U.S. export controls, with an emphasis on the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). The successful candidate will work on a wide range of compliance, licensing, and enforcement matters, drawing on the firm's deep regulatory and policy expertise.

Key responsibilities include:

• Providing regulatory guidance on EAR and ITAR compliance, with EU and UK export controls experience a plus.
• Conducting jurisdiction and classification analyses, including preparing Commodity Jurisdiction requests and CCATS filings; experience with encryption and emerging technologies is a plus.
• Obtaining BIS and DDTC export licenses and analyzing applicable license exceptions and exemptions.
• Advising on the impact of U.S. export controls on non-U.S. companies.
• Conducting and supervising party screening and due diligence.
• Preparing and filing DDTC registrations and related submissions.
• Drafting license applications and Commodity Jurisdiction requests.
• Developing and implementing international trade compliance programs based on risk assessments.
• Creating and delivering export controls compliance training.
• Representing clients in voluntary self-disclosures and regulatory inquiries.
• Supporting M&A-related trade compliance diligence and internal investigations.
• Handling related regulations, including economic sanctions, outbound investment, and CFIUS, as a plus.

• 3–6 years of experience counseling clients on U.S. export controls, with a strong emphasis on EAR and ITAR.
• Admission to the state bar of the office to which you are applying, or eligibility for admission by waiver.
• Excellent academic credentials and highly developed organizational, writing, and analytical skills.
