Apply in confidence →An appointment at partner level in this practice turns on what actually moves with you, more than on any single number.
Our client, a leading international law firm, is expanding its Tokyo office and seeking a partner-level lawyer to lead and grow its international M&A practice. This is a priority hire within a broader strategic build-out of the Tokyo platform, backed by strong global investment commitment.
Working closely with the Japan Managing Partner and a collaborative team, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the office's M&A offering, advising on complex cross-border transactions. The firm offers a modified lockstep compensation model and a non-equity partner track, providing flexibility on package structure.
Key requirements:
- Japan-qualified lawyer (bengoshi) or foreign lawyer registered in Japan (or willing to relocate to Japan within 12 months and obtain registration)
- Substantial experience in international M&A, ideally gained at a leading international firm; domestic-only M&A experience is not a substitute
- Proven track record of advising on complex cross-border transactions and managing client relationships
- Established reputation in the Japan market or a strong record from a comparable international market
- Willingness to be based in Tokyo, with a firm expectation of four days per week in the office
- Portable book of business of $2M+ (USD)
