A leading global law firm is seeking a Senior Manager, Conflicts Attorneys to lead its U.S.-based conflicts team and oversee the day-to-day operation of the conflicts clearance function for new clients and new matters across its U.S. offices. Based in any U.S. office, the role is a senior escalation point for complex and novel conflicts of interest questions arising under U.S. professional responsibility rules and involves direct interface with partners regarding approval of new matter requests.

The Senior Manager will personally handle the most complex and sensitive clearances while building, training, and leading a growing team, with the balance of the role shifting toward leadership as the team develops. The position is also responsible for the operational health of the U.S. function — workload allocation and coverage, turnaround and service levels, precedent and template libraries, training programs, and the continued development of conflicts and ethical screening technology — and reports to the Director, Conflicts Attorneys & Assistant General Counsel.

Responsibilities include supervising and mentoring the U.S. Conflicts Attorneys team, coordinating daily handover with the international conflicts team, resolving conflicts issues including negotiating waivers and drafting ethics wall memos, reviewing engagement letters and outside counsel guidelines for compliance, developing conflicts policies and frameworks of analysis, establishing service levels and quality metrics, partnering with Legal Operations and Information Systems on conflicts and screening technology, and delivering training on the new matter approval process and screening obligations.

  • Qualified attorney; admitted and in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction; J.D. from an accredited law school.
  • Minimum of 6 years of experience in a law firm conflicts, professional responsibility, or general counsel function.
  • Substantial knowledge of conflict-of-interest principles under the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct and analogous U.S. state rules, with demonstrated experience analyzing and resolving conflicts in a large law firm environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and lead a team of attorneys and analysts, including training, delegation, and accountability for quality and timeliness; formal supervisory experience preferred.
  • Experience at a large or global law firm strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with cross-border conflicts issues and the judgment to refer non-U.S. rules to the international team.
  • Deep working knowledge of conflicts clearance and ethical screening technology (Intapp or equivalent), including requirements gathering and workflow design.
  • Clear oral and written communication skills and the ability to manage competing priorities and tight deadlines with accuracy.
