The Glencore seat required an Australian practising certificate and mine-site travel. On 28 May 2026 that general counsel asked for negotiation of commercial contracts plus environment, health and safety, property and mining law, with autonomy at 2–4 years PQE from a large law firm or corporate seat. Yancoal's filled Sydney officer needed a law degree, ASX Listing Rules and Corporations Act 2001 exposure, and resources or joint-venture experience. Centennial paired Legal Counsel with part-time assistant company-secretary duties from April 2026.
Adjacent feeder seats are specialist mining private practice in Sydney, in-house at another producer, corporate and commercial lawyers with a resources client list, and company-secretarial officers. NSW Coal Industry 2026–50, published in March 2026, records that in 2025 the New South Wales coal industry employed about 23,800 people directly, generated $23.4 billion in exports, and contributed $2.7 billion in royalties across 35 mines.
That is why Sydney in-house headcount follows the book: 85 percent of NSW production is exported, Japan took 43 percent of 2025 destinations, and the Hunter held 19 mines and 14,437 direct jobs. Glencore managed about 95 million tonnes in 2024 from Sydney headquarters, with 10,220 employees and contractors. Yancoal's 2026 fact sheet lists eight producing mines, 5,649 full-time employees in 2025, and $1.3 billion in taxes and royalties. Whitehaven's FY25 results dated 21 August 2025 show 39.1 million tonnes managed ROM and $5.8 billion revenue after the 2 April 2024 Blackwater and Daunia completion.
Yancoal's 2026 contact page lists Sydney headquarters at Darling Park on Sussex Street. In 2025 Whitehaven and Malabar share the 259 George Street tower. Coal Services' general counsel, in post from November 2023, advises the NSW black-coal industry from Market Street. Malabar announced on 19 August 2025 an A$94 million Maxwell royalty restructure and targeted first longwall coal in early 2026.
A head of legal at an industry-owned NSW coal services organization reported that in-house hires fail when they have never sat a workers-compensation coal file. Extension pathways still consume counsel after the March 2026 ban on new standalone greenfield mines. The High Court of Australia heard MACH Energy's climate appeal on 13 May 2026; judgment was pending in public sources.

Employers in Sydney do not publish salary bands for this coal Legal Counsel seat. The Glencore Coal Australia posting of 28 May 2026 advertised Legal Counsel at about 2–4 years PQE, not a KMP general-counsel chair, with no posted base.
Yancoal's 2026 filled Corporate Compliance and Legal Officer advertisement offered competitive remuneration and hybrid Sydney CBD working, with no base, bonus, or equity figure. Whitehaven's FY25 financial report discloses KMP pay for the General Counsel and Company Secretary, a different seat; those figures are not this mandate's band.
Package shape on the live book is therefore: Legal Counsel grade; bonus eligibility undisclosed; LTIP and equity undisclosed on the 2026 Glencore notice; notice period not stated in the employer text; benefits language limited to career and development prospects at Glencore and hybrid CBD work at Yancoal. Sartori's offer telemetry on this line still shows a 12-working-day median offer-to-accept and 26 percent counter-offer incidence across the 19 closed searches over 36 months.
The Office of the Chief Economist, in the December 2025 Resources and Energy Quarterly, expects Australian thermal-coal export earnings to fall from $32 billion in 2024–25 to $27 billion in 2026–27; that price path does not substitute for a published Legal Counsel band. Bonus eligibility remains a negotiation item, not a posted number.

Glencore's Australia vacancies page, fetched 9 September 2026, no longer listed the coal Legal Counsel role; fill is unconfirmed on glencore.com. Royalty tables and production reports set the matter load; they still do not disclose in-house pay.
A chief legal officer at a Sydney-headquartered producer said 8 to 16 weeks is acceptable only if the 2–4 PQE candidate has already walked a mine access road.
