Interim Legal Talent in Sydney

Day-rate counsel for a Sydney legal department that has a dated gap: a leave, a financing, a super question, or a seat the board has not yet funded as permanent.

Discuss a Sydney interim brief
›Interim legal talent Sydney, the short answer

Interim legal talent Sydney is day-rate counsel for a dated gap, not a permanent seat. At 30 June 2026 the Law Society of NSW counted 36,707 practicing certificates in City plus suburban Sydney, and 9,042 corporate legal practitioner certificates statewide. Corporate respondents reported average FY2023–24 income of $235,439 in the July 2026 Annual Profile. Sartori closed 24 Sydney interim searches over three years; the firm-wide median start, across 60+ engagements since 2017, is 7 days. An ASX-listed insurer in Sydney had an interim general counsel live in 9 days.

01 — The brief answer

Interim legal talent for a Sydney gap, not a permanent chair

A general counsel, a chief compliance officer, or a chief operating officer in Sydney calls for interim legal talent when the work has a date and the headcount does not. The product is a day-rate in Australian dollars. It is not the 11-week median to an accepted offer on a permanent general counsel search, and it is not inside the 400+ placements since 2017 (230+ in-house). Across 60+ interim and fractional engagements since 2017, the median from first call to start is 7 days. A Series C fintech in San Francisco had an interim general counsel live on day 6. That file is the published comparison. It is not a Sydney placement.

On the Sydney interim line the closed count over three years is 24, at a 94 percent completion rate. Counter-offers landed on 14 percent of the offers. Once the day-rate and the start date were written, median offer-to-acceptance was 4 working days. Of those 24, 19 were live by day 7. The other 5 started later, because the engagement letter did not say whether superannuation was payable. That miss is the part of the book that does not flatter the method. Sartori has worked the Sydney market for 5 years. The 24 are the trailing three-year interim line, not a claim that the coverage is three years old. The global map behind the work is 1,480,000+ lawyer profiles. The Sydney slice used on these files is about 6,500 lawyers.

The interview cohort for the city is 250 structured interviews. That count is not added to the mapping figure. Of the 250, 36 were general counsel, chief compliance officers, or chief operating officers at Sydney companies. Of those 36, 13 said they would buy day-rate cover before opening a permanent search if the letter named who pays super. A general counsel at an ASX-listed insurer told us: The board pack was due on Monday. The day-rate was not the argument. Who paid the 12 percent super was.

The city hub is legal recruitment in Sydney. The practice, including the four modes and the 7-day firm clock, is interim and contract counsel. Pay that is printed for a permanent Sydney chair, and the reason a day-rate is a different object, is on general counsel salary in Sydney, 2026 and in-house counsel salary in Sydney, 2026.

02 — The local market

Sydney demand is a dated gap inside a large corporate bar

Interim legal talent Sydney is not a search for scarcity of solicitors. The Law Society of New South Wales practising-solicitor statistics for 30 June 2026 count 45,208 practising certificates in the state: 21,872 with a City principal place of practice and 14,835 in suburban Sydney. Those two location cells sum to 36,707. They are every certificate category, not a corporate-only headcount, and they are not our mapping. One year earlier, the same series at 30 June 2025 counted 43,620 certificates, with City at 21,274 and suburban Sydney at 14,587. The stock grew. It still does not staff a gap that opened this week.

The in-house slice is the corporate legal practitioner certificate. At 30 June 2026 that category was 9,042 statewide, up from 8,742 at 30 June 2025. The June 2026 statistics PDF does not split those 9,042 by suburb. The 2025 Annual Profile, census at 30 June 2025, does: of 8,742 corporate legal practitioners, 3,848 were in the Sydney CBD and 3,370 were in suburban Sydney. That is 7,218 in Greater Sydney, and 955 of the statewide corporate certificates were overseas. A hiring plan that treats 9,042 as a Sydney headcount is using a cell the publisher did not print.

The same profile is a seniority picture, not a vacancy count. Fifty-one percent of corporate solicitors had been admitted for 15 years or more, against 40 percent in private practice. In the 2025–26 Practising Certificate Survey, of 3,409 corporate respondents who named a role, 1,253 (37 percent) were senior lawyer or senior legal counsel, 916 (27 percent) were lawyer or legal counsel, 373 were general counsel, 347 were head of a legal team, and 203 were group general counsel. The modal title is senior legal counsel. A parental leave or a financing at that title is a different brief from a first general counsel.

Employer shape sits one level above the certificate. The Australian Bureau of Statistics’ modelled state industry estimates, released 5 September 2025, put New South Wales main jobs in the March quarter 2025 at 201,500 in financial and insurance services, 434,600 in professional, scientific and technical services, and 32,000 in mining. The ABS is explicit that these filled-job figures follow state of usual residence, not the location of the job, and that the series is indicative. They are not a count of Sydney legal vacancies, and they are not added to 36,707 certificates. They are the reason a Sydney day-rate book is heavy in banks, insurers, super funds, and the resources and infrastructure groups whose legal seats sit in the CBD even when the asset does not.

What the stock does not do is sign a board pack on Monday. Of 36 general counsel, chief compliance officers, and chief operating officers inside the 250 interviews, 13 described the sequence as cover first, and a permanent search only if the seat survives the gap. The other interviews in the 250 are the city cohort shared with the Sydney salary pages. They are not a second survey of interim buyers. The permanent Sydney chair, when the gap should become a hire, is a different search. Those pages are general counsel salary in Sydney, in-house counsel salary in Sydney, and legal recruitment for Sydney company seats. The market narrative those seats sit in is the Sydney legal market in 2026.

Hiring in Sydney?

Name the gap, the day-rate, and who pays super.

Interim work is a day-rate. If the seat later becomes permanent, the retained fee is 25–30 percent of first-year total compensation. The retainer is 30 percent of that fee, kept if the client cancels. Days billed credit against that later fee.

03 — Mandates we run

Where the Sydney interim files actually sat

The 24 closed searches split four ways. 11 were banks, insurers, superannuation funds, or asset managers. 6 were resources, infrastructure, or industrial groups. 4 were technology, payments, or life sciences. 3 were commercial or disputes surges in a company legal department. That is the whole book. Eleven plus six plus four plus three is twenty-four. It is not a forecast of next year’s mix, and it is not the mix of the permanent in-house line. It is also not the ABS job counts. Those describe where NSW residents work. These 24 describe files we closed.

Named-officer cover inside financial services. Of the 11, 4 were an interim general counsel or an interim chief compliance officer. The other 7 were counsel below that title: a leave, a financing, or a defined workstream. The insurer file in the engagements below is one of the 4. The day-rate used on this book for an interim general counsel is A$2,200-A$3,800. The day-rate for an interim chief compliance officer is A$2,600-A$4,400. Those are Australian-dollar engagement prices. They are not a reconstruction of what the person banks after tax, and they are not the US or UK cards.

Resources, infrastructure, and industrial projects. The 6 were scoped to a project: a construction or resources file, a supply contract, or a carve-out schedule with an end date. They are not a permanent head of legal. The infrastructure file below is one of the 6, and it is also one of the 5 that missed day 7. Mining’s 32,000 NSW main jobs in the March quarter 2025 are context for why a resources seat appears in a Sydney legal department. They are not a count of our mandates.

Technology, payments, and life sciences. The 4 include fractional general counsel seats at two or three days a week. Of those 4, 2 were repriced after the first conversation because the client’s rate card was a contractor net figure and the engagement was with an individual whose contract was mainly for their labor. The published day-rate on this book is the gross engagement price. A net card is a different number, and treating them as the same is how those two files slipped.

Commercial and disputes surge. The 3 were a matter list with an end date: contract volume, or a disputes workstream while a hearing or a filing was live. Three files is the count we closed. It is not a share of the 434,600 professional-services main jobs in New South Wales.

Counter-offers landed on 14 percent of offers. That percentage is not restated as a headcount of the 24. On this line a counter-offer is usually a promise to convert the day-rate into a permanent seat, or a request to wait for a bonus date. It is less often a fight over the daily figure once super is written down. The files that slipped did so earlier, on the missing super sentence, which is the 5.

05 — Compensation

Sydney day-rates, and the permanent salary pages they are not

A Sydney interim price is a day-rate or a monthly retainer for the days worked. It is not a base salary, and it is not the cash a permanent general counsel page prints. The Australian-dollar bands used on this book are an interim general counsel at A$2,200-A$3,800 a day, an interim chief compliance officer at A$2,600-A$4,400, a fractional general counsel at two to three days a week at A$2,800-A$4,600 on the days worked, a first general counsel for a company under $100 million of revenue at A$2,000-A$3,400, commercial counsel on secondment at A$1,400-A$2,600, and a legal-operations contractor at A$1,100-A$2,000. Days billed on the interim engagement credit against a later retained fee if the company then runs a permanent search.

The firm also publishes a US card and a UK card. They are not the Sydney price. A US interim general counsel is $1,800–$3,200 a day. A US fractional general counsel at two to three days a week is $2,800–$4,500 on the days worked. A US interim chief compliance officer is $2,200–$3,800. UK sterling bands are £1,400–£2,400 for an interim general counsel and £1,800–£3,200 for a fractional general counsel on the days worked. A company that converts one of those cards at a spot rate and calls the result a Sydney day-rate has built a different product.

The permanent comparison, for a Sydney company seat, is a survey average, not a day-rate. Solicitors in the corporate legal sector who answered the Law Society’s 2025–26 Practising Certificate Survey reported average FY2023–24 gross income of $235,439. The profile’s income chapter states that 45 percent of corporate legal practitioners reported earning over $200,000. Jobs and Skills Australia’s solicitor profile, drawing on the ABS Survey of Employee Earnings and Hours for May 2025, puts median full-time earnings at $2,070 a week. That weekly figure is a national occupation cut of median full-time earnings. It is not a Sydney general counsel package, and dividing it by working days does not produce an interim rate. The tables that hold the permanent Sydney chair are general counsel salary in Sydney, 2026, in-house counsel salary in Sydney, 2026, and lawyer salary in Sydney, 2026.

Tax and super change what the day-rate means. The super guarantee is 12 percent, including for the year 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027. The ATO’s contractor page says you pay super when the contract is mainly for the person’s labour, the person must perform the work, and the payment is for labour rather than a specified result. A contract with a company, a trust, or a partnership does not require super for the individual that entity then uses. Paying an extra 12 percent on the invoice, and not into a fund, does not meet the guarantee. From 1 July 2026, Payday Super requires that contributions which are payable be received by the fund within 7 business days of payday. The percentage does not change. Separately, from 26 August 2024, a constitutionally covered business decides employee versus contractor for Fair Work purposes on the whole of the relationship: the contract and how it is performed, including control, delegation, and who carries the risk. Of the 4 technology, payments, and life-sciences files, 2 had to be repriced because that pair of questions was missing.

If the interim seat becomes a permanent hire, the fee changes instrument. Company mandates are retained only. The fee is 25–30 percent of the hire’s total first-year compensation. Thirty percent of the fee is paid at engagement and kept if the search is cancelled. A general counsel, chief legal officer, or chief compliance officer search carries a 12-month replacement term. Other in-house searches carry 6 months. Off-limits on the client’s legal department run 24 months. Offer acceptance on corporate mandates is 96 percent. Retention of placed in-house leaders is 97 percent at 12 months and 91 percent at 24 months. Those permanent figures are not the completion rate on the Sydney interim line, which is 94 percent of the 24. They are also not the 14 percent counter-offer incidence on interim offers.

06 — Timeline

Seven days is the firm clock. Four working days is the Sydney offer window.

Two clocks measure different intervals. The firm-wide median from first call to start is 7 days across 60+ interim and fractional engagements since 2017. The Sydney interim line’s median from a written offer to acceptance is 4 working days. The first is the whole runway. The second starts only once the day-rate, the super position, and the start date are on paper. On this Sydney book, 19 of 24 were live by day 7. 5 were not. The three engagements above are drawn from those five.

The running order is the same as the parent practice, and the stage labels are not separate measured averages. The first call writes the gap: matter list, seniority, whether the seat is an interim general counsel or counsel below that title, the day-rate authority, and whether the contract is with an individual or a company. The shortlist is people already known to be able to hold that matter, and able to give Australian-law advice on a current New South Wales certificate in the category the seat actually uses. A corporate legal practitioner certificate is the in-house category. It is not an authority to work as an employee of a law practice. Conflicts and access run in parallel. The engagement is live when the person is on the work, not when a rate is first mentioned.

Notice is a third clock, and the National Employment Standards set it for an employee. The Fair Work Ombudsman’s notice fact sheet states the minimum as one week where continuous service is one year or less, two weeks for more than one year up to three, three weeks for more than three years up to five, and four weeks after five years, with an extra week if the employee is over 45 and has at least two years of service. The employer may pay in lieu. A day-rate engagement that is genuinely a contract for services is not that scale. The delay, when there is one, is the candidate’s notice to a current employer, or the client’s own onboarding, not a notice period inside the interim contract. A 2026 interim cover is not a device for waiting out a permanent hire. It covers the work.

A permanent general counsel search, if the company wants one after the gap, is the other book: 52 general counsel and chief legal officer placements inside the 230+ since 2017, a shortlist in 24 days, and a median accepted offer in 11 weeks, range 8 to 16. That 11-week median is not the 7-day interim start, and it is not the 4 working days on this Sydney interim line. Days already billed credit against the later retained fee. The named-officer interim product, when the brief is specifically a general counsel, is interim general counsel.

07 — How a search runs

The Sydney sequence, from the first call to the day the person is on the work

The brief is written before anyone is approached. It names the matter list, the seniority, the day-rate or the days per week, whether the client is contracting with an individual or a company, whether super is payable, and the date the work must be live. A brief that says only “interim lawyer, Sydney” is sent back. Of the 5 files that missed day 7, the missing sentence was super, not the supply of lawyers. The 30 June 2026 count of 36,707 practicing certificates in City plus suburban Sydney is the reminder that supply was not the constraint.

Mapping uses the Sydney coverage of about 6,500 lawyers inside the global map of 1,480,000+ profiles, filtered to people who have already held the matter on the brief and who hold a current certificate in the right category. The 250 structured interviews are the city cohort. They are not added to the mapping coverage, and they are not a Sydney-only headcount of the 60+ interim engagements. Approach is confidential. Names reach the client after conflicts and the rate expectation, not before.

Close is the written day-rate, the super position, and a start date. Acceptance has taken a median of 4 working days once those three were written. Counter-offers, at 14 percent of offers, are planned before the candidate resigns anything. Completion on the 24 is 94 percent. We do not convert that percentage into a headcount. The firm-wide median from first call to start remains 7 days across the 60+ engagements since 2017. Sydney’s own split is 19 by day 7 and 5 after it.

After the start, the engagement ends when the matter ends, or when the sitting lawyer returns, or when the company converts the seat. Conversion is a new retained search, not an extension of the day-rate by silence. The research program that holds the interview cohort is on our research page. The method for any city is on our methodology. Firm background, including the founding in early 2017 by Lorenzo Sartori, sits with the confirmed book. Sydney is not one of the hub cities. The 5 years on this market are the local book, together with the Sydney interim counts.

A company that already knows the seat should be permanent can start at in-house and general counsel recruiting instead. A company that wants the Sydney market described as a company chair, rather than as a day-rate, starts at legal recruitment in Sydney. The geography itself is Sydney.

09 — Questions

Interim legal talent in Sydney — common questions

Who are the best people to call for interim legal talent Sydney?

A ranking does not exist. The useful test is whether the brief names the gap, the Australian-dollar day-rate, and whether super is payable. Sartori closed 24 Sydney interim searches over three years, at a 94 percent completion rate. Counter-offers landed on 14 percent of offers. Median offer-to-acceptance was 4 working days. The firm-wide median from first call to start is 7 days across 60+ engagements since 2017.

How fast can interim legal talent in Sydney actually start?

The firm-wide median from first call to start is 7 days across 60+ interim and fractional engagements since 2017. On the Sydney interim line, 19 of 24 closed searches were live by day 7. The other 5 started later because the engagement letter did not say whether super was payable. Once the rate and the start date were written, median offer-to-acceptance was 4 working days. Notice to a current employer, where the person is an employee, runs after that. The statutory floor, for an employee, is the National Employment Standards notice scale.

What do Sydney interim counsel and a fractional GC cost?

A Sydney price is an Australian-dollar day-rate, not the US or UK card and not the $235,439 NSW corporate average. An interim general counsel is A$2,200-A$3,800 a day. An interim chief compliance officer is A$2,600-A$4,400. A fractional general counsel at two to three days a week is A$2,800-A$4,600 on the days worked. A first-GC fractional seat for a company under $100 million of revenue is A$2,000-A$3,400. Commercial counsel on secondment is A$1,400-A$2,600. A legal-operations contractor is A$1,100-A$2,000. Days billed credit against a later retained fee. The permanent fee, if the seat stays, is 25–30 percent of first-year total compensation, with 30 percent of that fee paid as a retainer. The permanent Sydney tables are on the general counsel salary and in-house counsel salary pages.

Which Sydney sectors hire interim legal talent?

Of 24 closed Sydney interim searches over three years, 11 were banks, insurers, super funds, or asset managers, 6 were resources, infrastructure, or industrial groups, 4 were technology, payments, or life sciences, and 3 were commercial or disputes surges. Of the 11, 4 were an interim general counsel or an interim chief compliance officer.

Does superannuation apply to a Sydney interim lawyer?

It depends on who the contract is with. The ATO says super is payable to an independent contractor when the contract is mainly for that person’s labour, the person must do the work, and payment is not for a result. A contract with a company, trust, or partnership does not require super for the person that entity employs. The super guarantee rate is 12 percent. From 1 July 2026, Payday Super requires contributions that are payable to be received by the fund within 7 business days of payday. The Fair Work whole-of-relationship test, in force for constitutionally covered businesses from 26 August 2024, is a separate question from the super test.
