Legal Recruiters Dallas for Company Chairs and Firm Seats

Dallas has the lawyers. The chair that stays empty is a company general counsel, chief legal officer, or head of legal, or a firm seat a new office has not filled. We run the retained search that covers it.

Brief a Dallas search Talk to us
01 The open chair

The Dallas chair that stays empty is a payroll line.

Legal recruiters Dallas get the call after a metro full of lawyers has failed to produce one person the board will put on the payroll. The State Bar of Texas 2025-2026 population-density report counts 31,651 active in-state attorneys in the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metropolitan statistical area as of 31 December 2025, 31.29 percent of the 101,162 active in-state attorneys statewide.

Sartori’s Dallas interview cohort (500 structured interviews) shows that uncovered seat sitting first on a company payroll: a general counsel, a chief legal officer, a head of legal, or a deputy under that officer. Across 110 company hiring managers in that cohort over a 24-month window, 64 named a first general counsel, or a successor the board would not yet announce, as the chair that stays open longest.

The Texas hub, covering Houston and Dallas, opened in 2024. Over the last three years we closed 22 in-house searches on this line, at a 94 percent completion rate, on a median of 12 weeks inside an 8-to-16-week band. Firm-side associate and partner search is a separate retained product. Those files are outside the 22.

Sartori maps about 20,000 lawyers in Dallas. That figure is who can be reached in the city. The research program’s global market map is 1,480,000+ lawyers.

02 Who hires

Two buyers share one metro and different clocks.

A company legal department and a Dallas law-firm office hire from the same bar count. They do not hire the same person, on the same cash, or on the same calendar.

The metro count and the county count are different stocks. The State Bar’s 2025-2026 population-density report puts 31,651 active in-state attorneys in the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington MSA as of 31 December 2025, against a metro population of 8,477,157, a ratio of 1 attorney to 268 residents. The Dallas County profile for 2025-26, as of the same date, counts 17,719 active attorneys in Dallas County alone. Collin, Denton, Tarrant, and the rest of the MSA sit in the gap between 17,719 and 31,651.

A third cut is the law-firm payroll. The Dallas Business Journal, on 16 January 2026, reported that the largest law firms in North Texas employ more than 5,181 local lawyers across Cooke, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Grayson, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, and Wise counties. That 5,181 is a firm-employment figure. It is smaller than the bar’s 31,651 because solos, in-house counsel, government lawyers, and firms below the list’s method sit in the bar count.

Company demand is the chair those firm lawyers are being hired to serve. Bloomberg Law, on 6 May 2026, reported that Charles Schwab and Caterpillar had moved headquarters to the Dallas area, that NVIDIA had announced a supercomputer manufacturing plant there, and that Goldman Sachs, with about 4,000 people in the region, is spending $500 million on an 800,000-square-foot complex scheduled to open in 2028. The same article recorded King & Spalding hiring 31 lawyers from Winston & Strawn in February 2026, 12 of them partners, into its Dallas office; Dechert announcing a Dallas office in January 2026; and Latham & Watkins hiring a Kirkland litigation partner in February 2026 to lead a new Dallas office.

Headcount already on the ground is concrete. Bloomberg Law, on 8 September 2026, reported Kirkland & Ellis at 549 lawyers across Texas, with the Dallas office, opened in 2018, past 100 lawyers, and Simpson Thacher’s Dallas office open as of July 2026. The 6 May 2026 Bloomberg account put Paul Hastings, which opened in Dallas in 2024, at 43 lawyers, and Vinson & Elkins at roughly 150 lawyers in Dallas. Law.com, on 4 August 2026, reported that King & Spalding, which opened its Dallas office in February 2024, had signed for 52,826 square feet at 23Springs, about double its current space, with a move by mid-2027.

Of 86 heads of legal at energy or PE-backed companies inside the same Dallas cohort, over a 24-month window, 41 said a firm counter-offer arrived before week 6 of a company process. That is why a headquarters relocation and a new Am Law office are different mandates in the same month: both are buying from a bar of 31,651, and both are bidding on people who already have a July paycheck.

The shortlist had to show Business Court filings, not a coastal résumé.

03 Why it stays open

A matched July paycheck and a January paycheck sit on the same street.

Legal headhunters Dallas hear the same objection from both buyers: the candidate already has a number, and the number depends on which firm memo landed.

NALP’s 2025 U.S. Associate Salary Survey, salaries as of 1 January 2025 and released 28 May 2025, put the median first-year base at $200,000 across reporting offices and at $215,000 in firms of more than 700 lawyers. The $225,000 figure was the most common single salary, reported by 32 percent of offices and by 45 percent of offices in firms of 701 or more lawyers. The same release named six markets where the first-year median had reached $225,000: Austin, Boston, Houston, New York City, San Francisco, and the Washington, D.C. area. Dallas was outside that list.

Milbank’s associate memorandum of 2 June 2026 moves the scale effective 1 July 2026. The class of 2026 and the class of 2025 go from $225,000 to $235,000. The class of 2022 goes from $310,000 to $320,000. The class of 2018 goes from $435,000 to $455,000. The memorandum raises four junior rows by $10,000, through the class of 2022, and four senior rows by $20,000, from the class of 2021 through the class of 2018. Above the Law, on 21 August 2026, reported that McKool Smith matched the same $235,000-to-$455,000 endpoints with an effective date of 1 January 2027. Through the second half of 2026, a Dallas candidate can be on the July scale, on a January 2027 scale, or on the January 2025 median.

Sartori’s 2026 company bands put a PE-backed portfolio general counsel at $280,000 to $420,000 base, with a target bonus of 25 to 50 percent. The $320,000 fourth-year firm base sits inside that band before any firm bonus. A company offer at $280,000 loses the associate who can stay on the July scale. An offer at $420,000 clears the base and still has to be read against bonus, equity, and the 30 percent counter-offer rate on the Dallas in-house line.

Of 22 closed Dallas in-house searches over three years, 7 ran past the 16-week end of the band. 6 of those 7 were sitting-counsel successions inside the 12 general counsel, chief legal officer, or head of legal files. 1 was a specialist seat. The search cannot outrun a company that has not told its own general counsel. That is the file that makes the 12-week median look faster than the work that actually stalls.

The license rule is specific and recent. Texas Disciplinary Rule of Professional Conduct 5.05, effective 1 October 2024, lets a lawyer admitted in another jurisdiction provide legal services solely to the employer or its organizational affiliates when the matter does not require pro hac vice admission. Texas Bar Practice, on 16 May 2025, states that the State Bar does not require that lawyer to register or pay a fee, and that the lawyer may not hold out as admitted in Texas. A Business Court appearance is still a Texas-license or pro hac vice question. Texas Constitution article VIII, section 24-a bars an individual net-income tax absent a statewide vote, so a Dallas base and a New York base at the same printed dollars are different checks.

04 What we run

What legal headhunters Dallas run, split by buyer.

Four products, one geography. The telemetry on the Dallas in-house line is 22 closed files. Firm associate and partner work is retained search on its own line.

01

General counsel, CLO, and head of legal

Standing company chairs: first general counsel, a successor while the incumbent remains, chief legal officer, and head of legal at a PE-backed platform. 12 of the 22 closed Dallas in-house files were this chair.

02

Deputy and associate general counsel

The seat under the officer: carve-out deputy, employment counsel after a headquarters move, funds counsel at a sponsor platform. 6 of the 22 closed files were deputy or associate general counsel.

03

Associate seats for Dallas firms

A retained associate search for a Dallas office — corporate, finance, energy, real estate, disputes — is a firm mandate. It is counted on the associate line, outside the 22 in-house files.

04

Partner seats for Dallas firms

Retained partner search for Texas firms and for national firms opening or rebuilding a Dallas office. Firm-side economics sit on the Dallas compensation notes. The buyer is the firm.

The 22 closed files split as 12 general counsel, chief legal officer, or head of legal chairs, 6 deputy or associate general counsel seats, and 4 specialist counsel seats.

One file inside that set: a PE-backed energy company in Dallas needed a general counsel after an operator acquisition. The first shortlist was rejected because 3 names had firm trial records and no operator employment file. We rewrote the brief as a company chair with Railroad Commission and commercial-contract exposure. The shortlist landed on day 26. The accepted offer came in week 13, from a sitting deputy at another North Texas operator, on working day 11 of the 12-working-day window.

A second file: a listed company moving a headquarters function to Dallas needed employment counsel who had already closed a multi-state handbook and a Texas charge. The incumbent firm made a counter-offer, which sits inside the 30 percent pattern on this line. The company signed in week 11. A hiring partner at an Am Law office in Dallas told us, after the February 2026 group move, that associates stopped taking calls until class-year credit was in the draft.

When the gap is a defined program — a financing, parental leave, the first six months after a headquarters landing — the faster product is interim and fractional counsel. Sartori has delivered 60+ interim and fractional engagements, with a median of 7 days from first call to start. Company buyers who want the standing team start at in-house and general counsel recruiting, general counsel search, and our work for companies. Energy chairs also sit on energy general counsel search.

05 How the search runs

Retained, exclusive, written down before the first call.

Companies engage us on a retained basis for Dallas mandates. Scope, fee, and off-limits are in the letter before any approach.

  1. 01

    Mandate blueprint

Week 1 is the chair, written down: reporting line, Texas admission or the Rule 5.05 employer-only path, Business Court exposure, and whether the sitting general counsel will be told. A brief that still reads as a firm partner is rewritten as a company seat before anyone is called.

  2. 02

    Market map

Weeks 1–2 map the Dallas in-house bench — energy operators, PE portfolio companies, relocated headquarters, banks — and the firm-side supply that might move. The Dallas map is about 20,000 lawyers. No posting. No job-board scrape.

  3. 03

    Private outreach

Weeks 2–4 are approaches to sitting counsel who are not looking. The company stays unnamed until both sides have agreed a qualified conversation. Dallas group moves in February 2026 showed how fast a quiet file becomes market talk once a name leaks.

  4. 04

    Credential and conflicts screen

We test Texas licensure, the 1 October 2024 employer-counsel path under Disciplinary Rule 5.05, and conflicts with the company's outside firms. A shortlist that cannot appear in the Business Court is labeled as such before the general counsel interview.

  5. 05

    Offer engineering

Cash is set against the 1 July 2026 Milbank scale and against the company band the board will actually sign. The Dallas in-house line holds a 12-working-day offer-to-acceptance window. Counter-offers land on 30 percent of those files.

  6. 06

    Close and ramp

Notice, start date, and the first 90 days are part of the mandate. A placement counts when the counsel is in the chair. Retained general counsel, chief legal officer, and chief compliance officer searches carry a 12-month replacement term.

Completion on the Dallas in-house line is 94 percent. The median time-to-fill is 12 weeks. The median offer-to-acceptance is 12 working days. Firm-wide, offer acceptance on corporate mandates is 96 percent, and 97 percent of placed in-house leaders are in post at 12 months, 91 percent at 24 months. The fee is 25-30 percent of first-year total compensation. Thirty percent of the fee is the retainer. The full method is on our methodology. The global market map behind it is 1,480,000+ lawyers.

Across 52 general counsel and chief legal officer searches since 2017, the shortlist arrives in 24 days and the accepted offer in a median of 11 weeks. That officer clock and the Dallas in-house median of 12 weeks measure different sets: the 38 are officers only, since 2017; the 22 are every Dallas in-house file over three years, including deputies and specialists. In 4 quarterly survey waves since 2025, 28 of 62 Dallas hiring-manager responses arrived with a firm-side title on a company chair. Those briefs go back. A search that starts as a partner-equivalent will not produce a general counsel the CEO will appoint.

A 12-month replacement term applies to retained general counsel, chief legal officer, and chief compliance officer searches. Other in-house searches carry 6 months. Off-limits runs 24 months against the client’s own legal department. Corporate mandates have run in 23 countries and 41 cities. Sartori & Partners was founded in 2017 by Lorenzo Sartori.

Talk about a Dallas search

06 The 2025–26 tape

Legal recruitment Dallas is being rewritten by a court and by office openings.

The hiring signal in 2026 is a new business court, a cluster of Dallas office launches, and headquarters landing in North Texas.

The Texas Business Court opened on 1 September 2024. The First Division centers on Dallas County; the Eighth centers on Tarrant County. The Office of Court Administration’s mid-year report counts 409 cases filed from 1 September 2024 through 30 April 2026, with 221 active and pending on 30 April 2026. The majority concerned energy, real estate, or technology. The same report records an average of 27 cases filed per month in fiscal 2026 against 16 in fiscal 2025, a 69 percent increase, and 82 written opinions from the opening through April 2026. The fiscal year 2025 annual report counted 52 cases in the First Division: 31 original petitions and 21 removals.

The Texas Lawbook, on 1 September 2026, counted 524 cases filed in the court’s first two years, 151 of them in Dallas and 222 in Houston. The 409 figure runs through 30 April 2026. The 524 figure runs through the two-year mark. The Texas Lawbook, on 25 June 2026, reported that House Bill 40 widened jurisdiction effective 1 September 2025. That date is the start of fiscal 2026, the year the Office of Court Administration recorded a monthly average of 27 filings against 16 in fiscal 2025.

Office supply moved on the same calendar. King & Spalding’s February 2026 hire of 31 Winston lawyers, including 12 partners, for Dallas (Bloomberg Law, 6 May 2026) changes the firm name on engagement letters for every company that used that trial group. Law.com, on 19 February 2026, reported a Cushman & Wakefield finding that Dallas-Fort Worth and New York City recorded the greatest percentage increases in leased space among the markets compared for 2019 through 2025. The same article put the footprint growth of the 25 largest firms at 6.8 percent across the top 10 legal markets over that span.

Simpson Thacher announced a Dallas office in February 2026 and, as Bloomberg Law reported on 8 September 2026, opened it in July. Latham’s February 2026 hire to lead a Dallas office and Dechert’s January 2026 announcement sit in the same quarter. A company adding a deputy in that quarter is recruiting into a market where the firm side is also buying. The data-center and power bench that follows this hiring is on the Dallas and Houston data-center legal benches note.

Dallas legal search — questions companies actually ask

What do legal recruiters Dallas actually run for a confidential general counsel hire?

A single retained mandate, terms in writing before any approach. Sartori closed 22 Dallas in-house searches over three years at a 94 percent completion rate, with a median of 12 weeks. Companies engage us on that retained basis. The hiring company pays. Candidates learn only what the company authorizes. See how a retained legal search runs.

Who hires through legal recruitment Dallas?

A company's general counsel, chief legal officer, CEO, or head of HR, and, on a separate product, a Dallas firm's hiring partner. The State Bar of Texas 2025-2026 population-density report counts 31,651 active in-state attorneys in the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington MSA as of 31 December 2025. Dallas County alone had 17,719 active attorneys as of that date. Those stocks are the market. The buyer of a company chair is the legal department.

How long does a Dallas general counsel search take?

Across 52 general counsel and chief legal officer searches since 2017, Sartori reaches a shortlist in 24 days and an accepted offer in a median of 11 weeks, on a range of 8 to 16 weeks. The Dallas in-house line, which includes deputies and specialists as well as officers, shows a median of 12 weeks and 12 working days from offer to acceptance. Of 22 closed Dallas in-house files over three years, 7 ran past 16 weeks, almost all of them successions the board would not yet name.

How are legal headhunters Dallas paid?

The hiring company pays. The fee is 25-30 percent of the hire's total first-year compensation, and 30 percent of that fee is paid as a retainer at engagement and kept if the company cancels. There is no contingency option. Read working with a legal recruiter and brief a search.

Do you recruit Dallas associates and partners as well as in-house counsel?

Yes. The 22 closed files quoted here are the Dallas in-house line. Associate and partner work is a separate retained product. Company buyers start at in-house and general counsel recruiting. Firm buyers start at associate recruiting and partner recruiting. Compensation context is on Texas lawyer pay for 2026.

What does a Dallas in-house chair pay against firm lockstep?

Milbank's 2 June 2026 memorandum sets a first-year base of $235,000 and an eighth-year base of $455,000, effective 1 July 2026. NALP's figures as of 1 January 2025 still had a $200,000 median first-year base across offices, and $215,000 at firms of more than 700 lawyers. Sartori's 2026 company bands put a PE-backed portfolio general counsel at $280,000 to $420,000 base. The fourth-year step on that Milbank memorandum is $320,000, inside the PE band before bonus.

What license does a Dallas in-house seat require?

A lawyer admitted in Texas can practice without a second registration. From 1 October 2024, Texas Disciplinary Rule of Professional Conduct 5.05 lets a lawyer admitted elsewhere advise the employer and its organizational affiliates when pro hac vice admission is not required. The State Bar of Texas does not require that lawyer to register (Texas Bar Practice, 16 May 2025). Court appearances still follow the Board of Law Examiners pro hac vice rules. Business Court work is a license question, asked in the first call.

Can we cover the chair with interim counsel while the permanent search runs?

Yes. A defined gap — parental leave, a deal surge, a headquarters move — is often faster as interim and fractional counsel. Sartori has delivered 60+ interim and fractional engagements, with a median of 7 days from first call to start. The permanent chair can run in parallel. The standing general counsel search remains a retained mandate.

Dallas in-house and firm search

If the Dallas chair is still empty, brief it as the seat it is.

A general counsel, chief legal officer, associate, or partner search in Dallas is a retained mandate. We listen first — to the reporting line, the Texas license, and whether the sitting counsel has been told.
