Eversheds Sutherland salary 2026: the London NQ, and when to match it
On 30 July 2026 the published London newly qualified base moved to £120,000. For the lawyer who earns it, that is the paycheck. For the general counsel who must match it, that is a bid to time.
Four cash figures. Only one of them is the published NQ.
London's published Eversheds Sutherland nq salary is £120,000 as of 30 July 2026. That is the number a general counsel is asked to match. Across 750 structured interviews with London lawyers, in-house hiring managers split on whether that cash is the right bid now or a figure to wait out until head-of-legal seniority.

Matching now is the right bid only where the in-house seat already pays private-practice cash. Waiting is cheaper on measured medians, not on a guessed PQE scale. The matching window is broken down below.

What the Eversheds Sutherland nq salary actually publishes
Two UK associate bases, a prior London step, a 2025 trainee figure, certified US wages that are not a scale, and an equity-partner average. Everything else is unpublished.
Legal Cheek reported on 30 July 2026 that Eversheds Sutherland had moved the London newly qualified solicitor base to £120,000 from £110,000, stated as a 9 percent rise, and the UK regional NQ base to £80,000 from £72,500. Nonbillable carried the same London figure the same day. RollOnFriday confirmed both numbers on 31 July 2026 and added the fact that matters for anyone pricing a 3-PQE or 5-PQE seat: the publication asked for salary details at other associate bands, and neither Mishcon nor Eversheds provided them. A figure that is not public is omitted here. It is not estimated.
The July 2026 London step sits on a short, dated path. Legal Cheek reported on 18 June 2025 that the London NQ would move to £110,000 from £100,000, taking effect from September. At the Legal Cheek Firms Most List on 29 September 2025, the compiled UK NQ average across 100-plus outfits was £118,756, and Eversheds Sutherland London still sat in that table at £110,000. The July 2026 rise is the first published London NQ that clears that compiled average. Magic Circle NQ in the same September 2025 table was listed at £150,000; that table belongs to a sibling page, and this one does not restate it as a thesis.
The trainee line is older than the NQ line, and it is left that way on purpose. Legal Cheek’s salary spotlight of 20 October 2025 listed the first-year training-contract salary at £50,000. The live firm profile, accessed 11 September 2026, flipped trainee figures across two retrievals of the same URL. No dated 2026 article confirming a trainee rise was found, so a 2026 trainee figure is not on this page. What the live profile did hold still: 50 UK training contracts, an annual target of 1,250 hours, and 26 days of annual leave.

When matching the London NQ is the right in-house bid, and when waiting is cheaper
The July 2026 London NQ more than doubles the measured London in-house NQ median. It sits below the measured head-of-legal median. That spread is the whole decision.
Incomes Data Research published its in-house legal pay survey on 11 December 2025. The UK newly qualified median was £44,263; the London newly qualified median was £57,000. Legal advisers sat at a UK median of £59,050 and a London median of £66,934. Heads of legal sat close to £150,000 at the median, with some surpassing £200,000. Senior in-house legal advisers typically took a bonus worth 12 percent and a car allowance of £7,000. IDR also recorded that recruitment and retention pressure for in-house legal roles was muted in 2025. Those are employer-survey medians, not Eversheds staff, and they are the cleanest non-recruiter read on what a company actually pays.
Subtract the London in-house NQ median from the July 2026 published London NQ and the cash gap is £63,000. The same £120,000 sits above the Government Legal Department London Grade 7 maximum of £65,677 as at 1 April 2024, from FOI 25_005 dated 21 January 2025, and above IDR’s London legal-adviser median. The first measured in-house seniority where cash meets or exceeds the published NQ is head of legal. That comparison mixes three dated series — a 2026 firm NQ, a 2025 in-house survey, a 2024 public-sector band — and it is not a prediction of any one employer’s bid. It is the window a general counsel actually has.
The profession that would pay a matching bid is not an NQ profession. The Law Society Annual statistics report 2023, page dated 23 January 2025 with data to July 2023, counted 35,738 solicitors working in-house, 22 percent of 162,120 practicing-certificate holders. The Solicitors Regulation Authority’s in-house diversity extract, published 10 January 2024 on a 25 April 2023 snapshot, covered 33,584 solicitors. Only 14 percent were aged 25 to 34. The highest share, 40 percent, sat at 35 to 44. Matching a 2026 NQ is a thin slice of in-house hiring, concentrated where funds, energy and large financial-services legal budgets already pay private-practice rates.
Across 750 structured interviews with London lawyers, 186 were in-house hiring managers — general counsel, chief legal officers, heads of legal and HR directors — at corporates, funds and energy sponsors over a 24-month window. Of those 186, 94 sat in financial-services, asset-management or energy legal. Of those 94, 61 said they would not cash-match a published London NQ in the current budget year. A general counsel at a London-listed asset manager put it without decoration: the number is matchable at head of legal, and it is not matchable at NQ if the rest of the team still has to be funded.
Match the published NQ nowWait for head-of-legal cash
- Match at NQ The in-house seat already pays private-practice cash — funds, depositary, energy-sponsor, large financial-services legal. The published NQ is a floor the budget already clears.
- Match later, still below head of legal The company needs the desk, not the title. Open below the published NQ and the search stretches. Raise to the published figure only where the seat is scarce and the work is already billed at private-practice rates.
- Wait for head of legal On measured medians, this is where in-house cash meets or exceeds the July 2026 London NQ. The NQ-to-2-PQE band is a minority of the in-house stock. Most general counsel are not buying that band.
The public-sector desk is a different buyer. Government Legal Service recruitment pages, accessed 11 September 2026, still describe around 2,300 lawyers providing civil advisory and litigation to central government, with the Government Legal Department around 1,800. FOI 25_005 prices a London Legal Officer at £49,919 and London Grade 7 at £57,305 to £65,677 as at 1 April 2024. Those bands do not cash-match £120,000. They buy the firm instead. Eversheds Sutherland (International) LLP sits on the Government Commercial Agency’s Legal Panel for Government RM6360 and Legal Panel for Public Sector RM6374; RM6240 expired on 5 September 2026. Panel membership is a buyer of the firm, not a count of government NQ hires.
Office for National Statistics ASHE, released 23 October 2025 and cited by IDR on 11 December 2025, recorded that median full-time annual earnings for “solicitors and lawyers” increased 10.7 percent year on year, against 4.3 percent for all full-time employees. The all-employee median gross annual full-time figure was £39,039 in April 2025. The occupation-level solicitor median in pounds was not extracted from the ASHE zip in the research behind this page, so it is not used. Direction and size of the occupation movement are; a guessed pound figure is not.
Two legal entities pay the law-firm number. A general counsel pays the matching bid.
Eversheds Sutherland (International) LLP pays the UK NQ. Eversheds Sutherland (US) LLP pays the US associate. The in-house legal department inside a FTSE or Fortune company pays the match.
Companies House records Eversheds Sutherland (International) LLP as OC304065, One Wood Street, London, incorporated 5 March 2003. That entity pays UK and international associates and partners. The US LLP is a separate legal entity and a separate payroll. Chambers Global 2026, firm-supplied, says clients include 71 of the US Fortune 100 and 57 of the FTSE 100. Those in-house legal departments are the other reader of this page. Sartori & Partners maps nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles globally, and quarterly market surveys have run since 2019. Sartori maps some 30,000 lawyers in London. That file records admission, employer and practice label. It does not invent a PQE scale the firm has declined to publish.
We have worked the London associate market for more than 10 years, for companies filling in-house seats and for firms filling associate desks. Over the trailing three years we closed 33 associate searches at a 93 percent completion rate, on a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks. Nineteen of those 33 were firm-side associate seats. Fourteen were in-house counsel seats at NQ to 4 PQE, the band a general counsel is matching against the published NQ. Counter-offer incidence on the London associate line is 35 percent. Median offer-to-acceptance is 12 working days.
The 2026 employer ads show labeled desks, not a generic NQ pool. A Financial Services (Retail Funds) associate seat in London, dated 2 July 2026, asked for NQ to 3 PQE and named fund houses, asset managers, depositaries and wealth managers as client types, with awareness of financial-services regulation and ideally the FCA. Structured finance hired at 1 PQE and again at 4 to 9 PQE in mid-July. Commercial Technology hired a Senior Associate at 4 to 7 PQE on 18 July 2026, with AI-systems contracts in the financial-services sector on the brief. Regulatory and Investigations advertised an NQ to 2 PQE seat across Leeds, Birmingham, Cardiff, London and Manchester on 28 August 2026. Construction (non-contentious) hired 4 PQE and above across Birmingham, London, Leeds, Manchester and Edinburgh on 4 July 2026. A general counsel matching the NQ is usually sitting in one of those buyer types, not in a generic commercial seat.
| Posted title | PQE gate | Location | Dated | Buyer types on the ad |

Ranked products point at the same buyers. Chambers UK Guide 2026 ranks Employment: Employer, London, in Band 2, with a firm-supplied UK employment team of over 140 lawyers instructed by financial institutions, large corporates and media organizations. Legal 500 London Retail Funds lists the practice in tier 1, with depositaries, banks and insurance companies as client types. Chambers UK Guide 2026 Energy & Natural Resources names sponsors, listed infrastructure funds, an electricity-transmission utility and a water utility as buyer types. West Midlands Real Estate sits in Band 1. Those are buyer maps, not a client list for a case study.
Ireland is now on the International payroll. Nonbillable reported on 13 July 2026 that 26 partners and 170 staff in Dublin and Belfast were folded into the International LLP in FY2025/26. Legal Cheek IE lists about 20 Dublin training contracts. That is a separate qualification path and a separate euro print; it is not a UK NQ.
The US associate pipeline is a summer program, not a UK training contract. The firm’s US Summer Program page, copyright 2026 Eversheds Sutherland (US) LLP, describes a program of nine to ten weeks, with a screening interview of one or two attorneys, a callback of five to eight, and a Hiring Committee decision in two to three weeks. Practicing in a US office requires admission to the relevant state bar. Certified LCAs use the job title Associate. A general counsel in London matching a UK NQ is not pricing that pipeline; a US in-house legal department matching a certified $225,000 or $235,000 Associate wage is looking at a different entity, a different credential, and a different bid.
Qualification for anyone who can be paid the UK NQ is the Solicitors Regulation Authority path, updated 28 January 2026 on the SQE questions page: a UK degree in any subject or equivalent, SQE1 then SQE2, two years’ full-time qualifying work experience in no more than four organizations, and character and suitability. The LPC route remains open until 31 December 2032 for transitional candidates. On top of that floor the firm’s own graduate-recruitment page, accessed 11 September 2026, states 128 UCAS points from the best three A-levels excluding General Studies and Critical Thinking, a 2:1 in any discipline, and Pass or above at law school. Legal Cheek lists the degree minimum as 2:1 and A-levels at ABB. A chief legal officer hiring an NQ out of that gate is buying a solicitor who has already cleared both the regulator and the firm filter; the published £120,000 is the cash attached to that clearance, not a market for converts.
Pays the law-firm figurePays a matching bid, or cannot
- International LLP Pays the UK and Dublin associate. London NQ and regional NQ are this entity’s published bases. Employer ads in July and August 2026 hired into labeled desks, not a pool.
- In-house private sector The general counsel, chief legal officer or head of legal inside a funds, energy, FS or large corporate legal team. This is who matches the figure, and who waits.
- Public-sector legal Government Legal Department, local government, panel instruction. Cannot cash-match the published NQ from Grade 7 bands. Buys the firm on RM6360 and RM6374 instead.
The NQ, the associate and the equity partner are three different paychecks, and only the first is a published UK base for 2026.
- The NQ earns £120,000 in London or £80,000 in the UK regions as of 30 July 2026. Legal Cheek’s 2026–27 Trainee and Junior Lawyer Survey of over 2,000 trainees and junior associates puts average start at 08:42 and finish at 18:32. Client-secondment probability on the same survey is 19 percent; abroad, 7 percent.
- The associate above NQ has a title — Associate, Senior Associate, Principal Associate — and no published pound figure. Qualification is SRA admission: degree or equivalent, SQE1 then SQE2, two years’ qualifying work experience, character and suitability. The firm’s own graduate gate adds a 2:1 and 128 UCAS points from the best three A-levels.
- The equity partner sits on an International PEP of £1.61 million for the year to 30 April 2026. That is not a salaried-partner wage. The UK pay-gap report counted 335 UK Partners as at 5 April 2025, of whom 34.03 percent were women, and it draws a separate line for Fixed Share Partners.
The matching bid is paid by a company legal department, and most of that stock is older than NQ.
- Private-sector in-house is 66 percent of the SRA in-house snapshot of 25 April 2023. Public-sector is 28 percent, of which local government is 13 percent. The SRA thematic review of 14 March 2023 surveyed more than 1,200 in-house solicitors; 70 percent named demands from colleagues as their biggest pressure, and 25 percent of junior solicitors had not received training on professionalism, ethics or judgment in the past 12 months.
- Funds, energy and large FS legal are the desks most likely to cash-match a London NQ, because they already buy the firm at private-practice rates. The Retail Funds vacancy and the Legal 500 funds client types describe the same buyer.
- Central government legal cannot cash-match £120,000 from the 1 April 2024 GLD bands. It instructs the firm on rail public-ownership and international investment disputes, and it seconded trainees; Legal Cheek lists the Department for Transport among secondment destinations. That is a client relationship, not an NQ offer.
The number is matchable at head of legal. It is not matchable at NQ if the rest of the team still has to be funded.
Partner economics are public. Associate bonus pounds are not.
International PEP for the year to 30 April 2026 is £1.61 million. The associate bonus scheme in pounds is not in the public domain. The statutory bonus-receipt rate is.
The Law Gazette reported on 13 July 2026 that Eversheds Sutherland (International) had posted revenue of £827.1 million, up 8 percent, net profit of £209.4 million, up 13 percent, and profit per equity partner of £1.61 million, up 14 percent from £1.4 million, for the year to 30 April 2026. The prior International year, to 30 April 2025, was revenue £768.7 million, net profit £185.7 million and PEP £1.4 million, per the Law Gazette on 14 August 2025. The Law Gazette Top-50 table, updated 20 August 2026, places the International arm below CMS at £839 million and Clyde & Co at £857 million, and above Norton Rose Fulbright at £763.5 million. Those are firm-announced results compiled, not a combined transatlantic total.
Global Legal Post, in the same 13 July 2026 results piece, recorded US-arm revenue for calendar 2025 at $503 million, up 9.2 percent. US profit per equity partner is not used here: the firm news page and the American Lawyer write-up did not return usable body text when accessed. Certified Labor Condition Applications, compiled by Ellis and last updated April 2026, show an Associate wage of $225,000 in Atlanta (filed 15 May 2025, start 1 October 2025) and in Washington, DC (filed 8 May 2025), and $235,000 in Atlanta (filed 11 May 2026). Those are sponsored-role wages on a certified filing. They are not a published US scale.
Partner inflow in FY2025/26 was a law-firm desk story: a record 37 lateral partners, described as double the previous financial year, and 25 internal promotions to partner, per Solicitors Journal and Global Legal Post on 13 July 2026. The company CTA on this page is not that mandate. It is the general counsel matching associate and NQ cash.
The closest public window on variable pay is the statutory gender and ethnicity pay-gap report for the UK business of the International LLP, snapshot 5 April 2025. It counted 2,618 UK employees, 64.17 percent women, a lawyer population 66.63 percent women, and 335 UK Partners. Employee mean gender pay gap was 15.28 percent (2024: 16.16 percent); employee median 27.48 percent (2024: 28.00 percent). Lawyer-only mean was 6.43 percent; lawyer-only median 12.97 percent. All-Partner mean was 43.84 percent; all-Partner median 32.86 percent. Equity Partner mean was 14.45 percent; Fixed Share Partner mean 14.85 percent. Combined employees-plus-Partners mean was 63.33 percent. On bonuses: 62.17 percent of employees received a bonus in 2025 against 65.67 percent in 2024, a drop of 3.50 percentage points, and men were 7.28 percentage points more likely to receive a bonus than women. Employee mean gender bonus gap was 26.39 percent; employee median bonus gap 30.97 percent. Equity-partner remuneration, the report states, does not include an entitlement to a bonus. That is an Equality Act 2010 (Gender Pay Gap Information) Regulations 2017 calculation. It is not an associate lockstep.
Compensation-adjacent lines that are public and are not salary: every associate was given a personal business-development budget of £350 as part of a Future Skills strategy, per Solicitors Journal on 13 July 2026, and more than 2,000 lawyers use Harvey as part of daily practice, per the Law Gazette on the same day. Legal Cheek lists a PGDL grant of £17,000 and an SQE grant of £17,000. None of those is a bonus scheme.
Price the published NQ against the seat, then decide whether to wait
A general counsel who opens at NQ cash the budget cannot defend will run past the typical timeline. A general counsel who waits for head-of-legal seniority is buying a different person.
Of the 14 in-house associate-grade searches inside those 33 closed London associate files, 8 opened within 10 percent of the then-published London NQ. Six of those eight closed on the first bid. Two lost the preferred candidate to a private-practice counter-offer inside the 12-day window and closed with the second name. Six of the 14 opened at a discount to the published NQ; two of those six later closed after the company raised, and four stalled past the typical 6-to-12-week timeline before completing at a later seniority. That last cut is the uncomfortable one: the London associate desk places slowly when a company opens below a published NQ it cannot hold. Five of the 14 in-house seats drew a competing private-practice counter-offer, against a London associate counter-offer incidence of 35 percent on the full 33.
Inside the same interview cohort, 128 associates at UK international LLPs discussed in-house timing over the same 24-month window. Seventy-one of those 128 said they would not move in-house at NQ if the cash gap exceeded 40 percent of private-practice base. The measured gap between £120,000 and the IDR London in-house NQ median of £57,000 is £63,000, which is larger than that 40 percent threshold. A head of legal at an energy-transition sponsor described the other side of the same arithmetic: waiting until the seat is head of legal is cheaper than matching at NQ, because the median already clears the published figure and the person in the chair can actually sign.
| The move | When it is the right bid | Measured against | The risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Match the London NQ now | The in-house seat already pays private-practice cash: funds, depositary, energy-sponsor or large FS legal | £120,000 London NQ, Legal Cheek 30 July 2026 | A 35 percent London associate counter-offer rate; the preferred NQ walks |
| Hold the NQ bid below the published figure | Budget cannot clear £120,000 without stripping the rest of the team | IDR London in-house NQ median £57,000, 11 December 2025 | Four of fourteen in-house associate-grade searches stalled past twelve weeks |
| Wait until head-of-legal seniority | The company needs a general counsel or head of legal, not an NQ | IDR heads-of-legal median close to £150,000, 11 December 2025 | The NQ-to-2 PQE band is only 14 percent of the in-house stock |
| Do not cash-match from a public-sector desk | Government Legal Department or local-government legal is the payer | GLD London Grade 7 maximum £65,677 as at 1 April 2024 | The published NQ sits above the Grade 7 band; buy the firm on panel instead |
Three anonymized composites from the same London associate book, described by category only.
A London-listed asset manager needed a funds and regulatory counsel at NQ to 2 PQE after a Retail Funds-style secondment had already shown the candidate the FCA framework. The company matched the then-published London NQ. The search closed in 9 weeks. The preferred name signed inside 12 working days. That is the match-now case: the seat already paid private-practice cash, and the budget cleared the published figure without stripping the rest of the team.
An energy-transition sponsor opened a 3-PQE commercial counsel seat at a discount to the published London NQ, on the theory that in-house hours would close the gap. The preferred name took a private-practice counter-offer. The file ran 16 weeks, past the typical 6-to-12-week window, and closed on a 4-PQE candidate after the company raised. That is the stall case, and it is the one our London associate telemetry keeps returning.
A depositary’s legal function waited. It did not open at NQ. It opened a head-of-legal seat against IDR’s 2025 median near £150,000, hired in 11 weeks, and put the published NQ out of scope on purpose. The SRA age split is the reason that wait is available: most in-house stock is already past NQ. The company was not shopping in the 14 percent.
Before a general counsel opens the requisition, three questions decide the bid. First: does this seat already pay private-practice cash, or is it a commercial in-house desk that has never cleared £120,000 at NQ? Second: can the company live with a 3-PQE or 4-PQE hire if the NQ walks, or is the work gated on a newly admitted solicitor? Third: is the alternative a head-of-legal hire, where IDR’s 2025 median already sits near £150,000? A chief legal officer who cannot answer those three is not ready to match the published NQ. A head of legal who can answer them, and whose budget already clears the figure, should match and close inside the 12-day window, because that is where the 35 percent counter-offer rate lives.
Google Ads Keyword Planner, four-country extract dated 11 September 2026, recorded 120 monthly searches for the exact string this page is built on. That is demand for the published number, not evidence that a general counsel should pay it. For the city-wide London pay map against which this firm’s NQ sits, see lawyer salary in London, 2026. For why a published NQ pulls applications and still loses the class, see why NQ salary tables attract but do not retain. Partner economics beyond this International PEP sit on partner pay at London law firms. The search itself, when the bid has to clear a published private-practice NQ, is in-house counsel recruiting and, on the firm side of the same city, associate recruiting and legal recruiters in London.

Why NQ salary tables attract but do not retain
The UK NQ retention problem this page does not own: why a published newly qualified number pulls applications and still loses the class two years later.

What is the Eversheds Sutherland nq salary in London in 2026?
The published London newly qualified base is £120,000 as of 30 July 2026, up from £110,000. Legal Cheek reported the rise that day, with same-day confirmation from Nonbillable and RollOnFriday the next morning. The UK regional NQ base moved to £80,000 from £72,500. Those two figures are the only firm-wide UK associate bases the firm has put in the public domain for 2026. Associate bands above NQ were refused when asked, on 31 July 2026.
Does Eversheds Sutherland publish associate pay above NQ?
No. RollOnFriday reported on 31 July 2026 that the firm declined to provide salary details at other associate bands. This page does not fill that gap with a crowdsourced table. A general counsel matching a 3-PQE or 5-PQE seat is pricing a confidential conversation, not a published ladder. The title sequence on 2026 employer ads — NQ Associate, Associate, Senior Associate, Principal Associate — is public; the pounds attached to those titles above NQ are not.
How does the London NQ compare with in-house counsel pay?
It is more than double Incomes Data Research’s London in-house NQ median of £57,000, published 11 December 2025. The same £120,000 sits above IDR’s London legal-adviser median of £66,934 and above the Government Legal Department London Grade 7 maximum of £65,677 as at 1 April 2024. IDR’s heads-of-legal median, close to £150,000, is the first measured in-house seniority where cash meets or exceeds the July 2026 London NQ.
What do Eversheds Sutherland equity partners earn?
International-arm profit per equity partner was £1.61 million for the year to 30 April 2026, up 14 percent from £1.4 million, per the Law Gazette on 13 July 2026. That is an equity-partner average for Eversheds Sutherland (International) LLP, not a salaried-partner wage and not a combined transatlantic figure. The US LLP files separately; calendar-2025 US revenue was $503 million, per Global Legal Post on 13 July 2026. US PEP is not used here because the underlying pages did not return a usable body.
Should a general counsel match the London NQ now?
Match it where the seat already pays private-practice cash; wait until head-of-legal seniority, where IDR’s 2025 median sits near £150,000. Across 94 in-house hiring managers inside Sartori’s London interview cohort, 61 said they would not cash-match a published London NQ in the current budget year. Of 14 in-house associate-grade searches inside 33 closed London associate files, the four that opened at a discount to the published NQ ran past the typical 6-to-12-week timeline.
Is there a published Eversheds Sutherland associate bonus scheme?
No pound figure for an associate bonus scheme is public as of 11 September 2026. The firm’s 2025 UK Gender and Ethnicity Pay Gap Report, snapshot 5 April 2025, records that 62.17 percent of employees received a bonus in 2025, down from 65.67 percent in 2024, and that men were 7.28 percentage points more likely to receive one. Equity-partner remuneration “does not include an entitlement to a bonus.” Treat those as statutory calculations, not a lockstep bonus ladder.

Match the published NQ, or wait until the cash meets.
We price the bid against the July 2026 London figure and the measured in-house medians before anyone sees a name.
