Salary benchmarks
Law firm CFO salary in 2026
A dated median, a quartile span, and two UK single-figure filings. The January 2026 PwC cell is not in the public sample. The number a firm can defend is the one whose year and population are printed on the same line.
Law firm CFO salary, with the year inside the figure.
Read the median first. Then read who was in the cell, and which 1 January the salary was measured on.
| Seat | Figure | Who is in the cell | Source |

‡ in the PwC sample means fewer than 75 percent of the comparison group responded. 32 responses out of 45 member firms is 71.1 percent, which is why the 1 January 2025 CFO lines carry the mark. The June 2024 CFO base line, 35 responses out of 44 member firms (79.5 percent), does not. A New York firm is not in the cell labeled “AmLaw 100 xNYC - Firms.” The reading of xNYC as excluding New York City follows from the parallel label “AmLaw Second 100 xNYC” (50 members in the 2025 Billing Rate sample): there are not 50 Second Hundred firms headquartered in New York City.
Three columns. The medians do not add.
Base is a 1 January stock. Bonus is last year’s flow. Aggregate is base plus bonus for the people who have both. The median of each column is not a person.
1 January salaryBase plus bonus
- Base Annual base salary on a stated 1 January. It does not include the bonus decided for the prior year.
- Bonus The award for a stated year-end. A different headcount from the base line is normal, and it changes the median.
- Aggregate PwC’s own footnote: aggregate compensation combines base salary and bonus. It is a third distribution.
PwC’s June 2025 Senior Administrative Leaders report measures chief financial officer base salary as of 1 January 2025, bonus awarded for the year ending 2024, and aggregate compensation as of 1 January 2025. The footnote on the aggregate table says aggregate compensation combines base salary and bonus. In the AmLaw 100 xNYC cell the CFO median base was $672,500 (n=32), the median bonus was $187,500 (n=30), and the median aggregate was $817,500 (n=32).
Add the first two medians and the sum is $860,000. That is $42,500 above the aggregate median of $817,500. The gap is arithmetic, not a missing benefit. Each column is its own set of firms. Two firms can sit in the base table and not in the bonus table. A reader who pastes $672,500 and $187,500 into an offer letter has built a package the survey did not publish.
The same rule applies to the prior cell. The June 2024 report, group “AmLaw 100 xNYC - Firms (44 members),” shows a CFO median base of $595,000 as of 1 January 2024 (n=35), a median bonus of $165,000 for the year ending 2023 (n=35), and a median aggregate of $725,000 as of 1 January 2024 (n=35). $595,000 plus $165,000 is $760,000, which is $35,000 above that year’s aggregate median. The non-additivity is a property of the table, not a one-year glitch.
Quartile labels run the other way from a spreadsheet habit. PwC’s own guide, in the companion Finance & Operations sample, says the third-quartile value is the entry point to the bottom 25 percent. On the CFO base line for 1 January 2025, the 1st quartile is $771,554, the median is $672,500, and the 3rd quartile is $544,208. The higher number is the 1st quartile. Quoting “$544,208 at the top quartile” reverses the survey.
The move from the 2024 cell to the 2025 cell is not a matched-firm raise. Membership went from 44 firms to 45. The 2025 CFO base line is marked ‡ because 32 of 45 firms responded (71.1 percent); the 2024 CFO base line is not, because 35 of 44 responded (79.5 percent). Within those limits the median base is $77,500 higher ($672,500 minus $595,000), which is 13.0 percent of $595,000. The median aggregate moved from $725,000 to $817,500, a difference of $92,500, or 12.8 percent of $725,000.
PwC’s public page for the survey says submissions for the 2026 Senior Administrative Leaders report were due on 8 May 2026, with results expected in early June 2026. The 2026 instructions ask for base salary as of 1 January 2026 and bonus for the year ending 31 December 2025. No January 2026 Am Law CFO median from that cycle is in the public samples used here. The 2026 brochure’s specimen table prints a CFO base of $702,500 / $595,000 / $500,000, n=35, under a header “Annual Base Salary as of Jan 1, 2025.” Those three figures, and that n, are the June 2024 report’s base distribution as of 1 January 2024. The June 2025 group report is the 1 January 2025 cell. The brochure is a reprint.
The median of the bases plus the median of the bonuses is not the median of the aggregates. $672,500 plus $187,500 is $860,000. The aggregate median is $817,500.
One median, and the span around it.
The default is the aggregate median as of 1 January 2025. The other buttons are the same survey, not a second market.
Median aggregate compensation as of 1 January 2025. PwC SAL, AmLaw 100 xNYC, issued June 2025. n=32. Base plus bonus. Not a January 2026 figure.
The bar is a visual rank across these six cuts, not a percent of salary. ‡ means the CFO lines drew fewer than 75 percent of the 45-firm group. Sources are listed below.

Set next to the median base, the median bonus of $187,500 is 27.9 percent of $672,500. That ratio is a comparison of two medians with different n (30 and 32). It is not the target percent PwC published, and it is not the bonus a firm should type into an offer. The bonus span itself, $150,000 to $250,000 at the quartiles, is wider in relative terms than the base span from $544,208 to $771,554: the bonus 1st quartile is 1.67 times the 3rd quartile ($250,000 / $150,000), while the base 1st quartile is 1.42 times the 3rd ($771,554 / $544,208).
Cash the survey counts, and cash the UK filings add.
PwC’s aggregate stops at base plus bonus. A UK single-figure total can add pension. Neither line is a partner draw.
For a US Am Law firm using the PwC cell, the negotiable cash in the public table is base and bonus. Aggregate is the sum of those two, person by person, then re-ranked. Benefits, pension, and long-term incentive sit outside that footnote. A committee that calls $817,500 “total compensation” in the public-company sense has imported a word PwC did not use. The report’s word is aggregate compensation, and the footnote limits it to base salary and bonus.
The UK listed-firm equivalents are single-figure tables, and they are two firms, not a survey. For the year ended 30 April 2025, Knights’ chief financial officer, Kate Lewis, was paid a salary of £280,000, a bonus of £100,000, and a pension of £14,000. Benefits were nil and the long-term incentive column in the single figure was nil. The total is £394,000. £280,000 plus £100,000 plus £14,000 is £394,000, so this particular total does add. From 1 May 2025 her salary is £294,000. Knights’ revenue for the year ended 30 April 2025 was £162.0 million. On the same single-figure table the chief executive’s total was £360,000, so the CFO line is the higher of the two executive totals that year. Outstanding share awards sit outside the £394,000. The performance share award granted in July 2021 lapsed in full; later awards had not vested into that year’s single figure.
Gateley’s chief financial officer, Neil Smith, was paid salary and fees of £300,000 and a bonus of £100,000 for the year ended 30 April 2025. The single-figure total is £407,000. From 1 May 2025 his salary is £315,000, a 5 percent increase on £300,000. Gateley’s revenue for the year ended 30 April 2025 was £179.5 million. The FY25 total is Smith’s. It is not a successor’s pay.
Put side by side, without averaging them: £394,000 and £407,000, at revenues of £162.0 million and £179.5 million, for the same year-end. The salaries a 2026 reader actually has in force, until the next remuneration report, are the 1 May 2025 letters: £294,000 at Knights and £315,000 at Gateley. Those are salaries, not forecasts of the next bonus.
US survey cash
Base as of 1 January 2025 plus bonus for the year ending 2024. Median aggregate $817,500. Pension is not in that footnote.
UK single figure
Knights adds a £14,000 pension and reaches £394,000. Gateley’s audited total is £407,000. Two firms, one year-end, no pooled average.
What is still outside
Unvested share awards at Knights are not in the £394,000. A discretionary partner bonus is not a written formula. The offer fails on the line that is missing.
CFO, director of finance, and the partner residual.
A director of finance is the seat under the CFO. Profits per equity partner are not a salary. A public-company CFO average is a third job.
- Financial accounting, reporting, cash, banking
- Typically reports to the CFO
- Same Am Law cell as the CFO line
- A smaller base, a much smaller bonus
- Oversees the financial activities of the firm
- Bonus formula is a compensation-committee document
- Base and aggregate are separate distributions
- The offer fails if the formula stays oral
PwC’s job definition for Director of Finance is the management of financial operations — accounting, reporting, budgeting, cash, and banking — typically reporting to the CFO. In the same June 2025 AmLaw 100 xNYC cell, that seat’s median base as of 1 January 2025 was $300,000 (1st quartile $310,000, 3rd quartile $270,919, n=29, ‡). Median bonus for the year ending 2024 was $40,000 (n=28). Median aggregate as of 1 January 2025 was $330,500 (1st quartile $380,000, 3rd quartile $306,993, n=29). The director median base is 44.6 percent of the CFO median base ($300,000 / $672,500). The director median aggregate is not a discounted CFO package. It is a different job in the same firms.
Armanino’s 2025 Law Firm Compensation, Billing Rate & Benefits Survey, Northern California edition, publishes a Director of Finance line and an empty Chief Financial Officer line. The public sample shows CFO annual base, annual bonus, and total compensation at 0 firms and 0 individuals. The Director of Finance base line is 3 firms and 3 individuals, all in San Francisco: average $305,667, median $310,000, 10th percentile $287,600, 25th $296,000, 75th $317,500, 90th $322,000. Total compensation for the same three people: average $349,333, median $335,000, 10th $316,600, 25th $323,500, 75th $368,000, 90th $387,800. Three observations are a disclosure, not a metro benchmark. They sit near PwC’s director median base of $300,000 and far below the CFO median base of $672,500, which is the useful contrast. They are not a California CFO salary.
Equity-partner profit is the residual after the firm’s costs, including this salary. The 2026 Am Law 100, covering fiscal 2025, put average profits per equity partner at $3.59 million, up 14.0 percent, as David Lat recapped on 30 April 2026 from the ALM release. $817,500 is 22.8 percent of $3.59 million. The percentage compares a median administrative salary-plus-bonus in an ex-New York City PwC cell with an average equity residual for the full Am Law 100. It is a scale check. It is not “the CFO earns 22.8 percent of what a partner earns,” because PEP is not take-home for a named partner and the CFO median is not the Am Law 100 CFO in New York.
A public-company CFO is a third seat. Squire Patton Boggs’s October 2026 note on its DC 100 report, covering proxy statements filed from 13 August 2025 through 24 July 2026, put average CFO compensation at US$3.8 million and average chief legal officer / general counsel compensation at US$3.3 million. $817,500 is 21.5 percent of $3.8 million. The law-firm number is cash the PwC footnote defines as base plus bonus. The public-company number is dominated by equity awards a law-firm CFO usually does not receive. Importing $3.8 million into a partnership compensation committee, or importing $3.3 million from that note onto a law-firm general counsel, mixes seats. The law-firm general counsel benchmark on this site is a separate page, built from a different filing set.
3rd quartile aggregate, 1 January 2025
Entry to the bottom 25 percent. PwC’s 3rd quartile is the lower number.
PwC SAL, June 2025| Seat | Figure | Population | Year of the figure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Law-firm CFO aggregate | $817,500 median | PwC AmLaw 100 xNYC, n=32 | As of 1 January 2025 |
| Am Law 100 equity partner | $3.59 million average PEP | Full Am Law 100, not the PwC cell | Fiscal 2025, published 2026 |
| Public-company CFO | $3.8 million average | Squire Patton Boggs DC 100 proxies | Filings 13 Aug 2025–24 Jul 2026 |
| Knights CFO | £394,000 total | One listed UK firm, Kate Lewis | Year ended 30 April 2025 |
$817,500 is 22.8 percent of a $3.59 million average PEP. The first number is a median salary-plus-bonus. The second is an equity residual for a different set of firms.
What the offer had to contain.
Two instruments, kept apart. Interviews describe the package a finance chief will move for. Mandate files describe where a search stalled.
From July 2024 through June 2026 Sartori & Partners ran 48 structured interviews with law-firm chief financial officers, finance directors, and chief operating officers who sign the management accounts. The geographic split is 36 in the United States, 9 in the UK or Europe, and 3 in Canada, Australia, or the Gulf. 31 held the title chief financial officer. 17 were finance directors or chief operating officers with profit-and-loss responsibility. 31 plus 17 is 48.
Finding 1. Segment: finance leaders at US law firms. Base: the 36 US interviews. Window: July 2024 through June 2026. 22 of those 36 would not move for less than 20 percent more total cash than the package they were already on.
Finding 2. Same segment, same base, same window. Of those 22, 14 also required a written long-term incentive. A discretionary pool, reset each year by the compensation committee with no formula in the offer, did not count. The 14 are a subset of the 22, not a second cut of the 36.
Finding 3. Segment: UK and European law-firm finance chiefs. Base: 9 interviews. Window: July 2024 through June 2026. 6 of those 9 named lockup and partner drawings, not the statutory accounts, as the problem in the first 90 days. Lockup here means unbilled time plus bills not yet paid. The accounts can be clean while cash is stuck in that gap, and drawings can run ahead of it.
Finding 4. Segment: interviewees who do not hold the CFO title. Base: the 17. Window: July 2024 through June 2026. 11 of those 17 sat at firms with fewer than 200 lawyers. The title on a firm under that cut is often finance director or chief operating officer. Paying that seat on the Am Law CFO median is a category error. The PwC director median base of $300,000 as of 1 January 2025 is the closer public cell, and it is still an Am Law cell, not a 100-lawyer firm.
Finding 5. Segment: Am Law 100 or Am Law 200 chief financial officer searches. Base: 4 of the 11 searches opened from January 2022 through June 2026. 2 of those 4 stalled after the second interview because the compensation committee would not put the bonus formula in the offer. The other 2 stalls in the set of 11 were outside the Am Law 100 and 200. This is the result that does not flatter the process: half the Am Law files in this window died on a sentence the committee would not write down.
Finding 6. Segment: law-firm CFO searches that reached an accepted offer. Base: 7 accepted offers out of 11 opened. Window: January 2022 through June 2026. Of the 7, 2 were the Am Law files that did not stall and 5 were not Am Law, so 2 plus 5 is 7, and 7 plus 4 stalls is 11. Median time from brief to shortlist on the 7 was 26 days. Median time from brief to accepted offer was 15 weeks. Of the 7, 3 drew a counter-offer from the incumbent firm. 2 of those 3 still joined. 1 stayed, for a retention bonus the hiring firm would not match.
One of the 7 is an Am Law 100 firm in Chicago that hired its chief financial officer in 2025. The file landed on both medians: shortlist on day 26, accepted offer in week 15. The offer was a base of $690,000 and a target bonus of 28 percent of base. That base sits inside the PwC base span for 1 January 2025, from $544,208 to $771,554. That span is the ex-New York City cell. The Chicago file is one Am Law 100 firm, not a reprint of the median. The target percent is a term in a letter. It is not the 27.9 percent ratio of the two PwC medians.
The committee would approve a base. It would not approve a formula. The candidate signed when the bonus math was in the offer, not when we moved the base.
The statutory accounts were not the first ninety days. Lockup and partner drawings were. A package that ignored those two lines was a package for a different firm.

The person paid, and the firm paying.
The same cell produces a different question on each side. Switch the tab. The figures do not change.
Test the cell before you test the number. A $817,500 median aggregate as of 1 January 2025 describes 32 Am Law firms outside the New York City cut. It does not describe a finance director, a UK listed firm, or a January 2026 raise.
| What to test | The figure it has to survive |
|---|---|
| Is the seat CFO or director of finance? | Median base $672,500 versus $300,000, both as of 1 January 2025, same PwC cell |
| Is the firm inside the AmLaw 100 xNYC group? | If it is a New York headquarters firm, it is outside this cell. Do not borrow $817,500 |
| Does the offer separate base and bonus? | Median bonus for the year ending 2024 was $187,500, n=30. It is not 187,500 on top of a promise to “pay the aggregate” |
| Is the bonus a formula or a pool? | 14 of 22 US interviewees who wanted at least 20 percent more cash also wanted the incentive in writing |
| Is the firm UK-listed, around £160–180 million of revenue? | Knights £394,000 total and Gateley £407,000 total, year ended 30 April 2025. Salaries now £294,000 and £315,000 |
The 20 percent cash threshold and the writing requirement (14 of 22) are from the US interview cut (36 interviews, July 2024 through June 2026), not from PwC. A candidate who cites them to a committee should say so. The public number the committee can look up is still the quartile span: aggregate from $709,124 to $1,057,638 around an $817,500 median, as of 1 January 2025.
Fix the population, write the formula, then price the search off first-year total compensation. A committee number that cannot survive the offer letter is the stall this set of files already recorded.
| Decision | What it costs when it is wrong |
|---|---|
| Match the seat to the cell | A director-of-finance hire priced at the CFO aggregate median is $817,500 against a director median aggregate of $330,500, same date |
| Put the bonus formula in the offer | 2 of 4 Am Law CFO searches in this window stalled after the second interview on that omission |
| Budget the counter-offer | 3 of 7 accepted offers drew one. 2 candidates still joined. 1 stayed for a retention bonus the hiring firm would not match |
| Set the clock off the closed files | Median 26 days from brief to shortlist, median 15 weeks from brief to accepted offer, on 7 closures from January 2022 through June 2026 |
| Price the fee off the package, not off PEP | 25–30 percent of first-year total compensation. On $817,500 that is $204,375 to $245,250. The retainer is 30 percent of the fee |
The fee terms are the firm’s retained schedule: 25 to 30 percent of first-year total compensation, billed as a retainer equal to 30 percent of the fee, with the balance on completion. On the PwC median aggregate of $817,500 as of 1 January 2025, 25 percent is $204,375 and 30 percent is $245,250. That illustration uses the survey median as the compensation base. A firm whose offer lands at the 1st-quartile aggregate of $1,057,638, or at a UK salary-plus-bonus, recompute from the offer, not from $817,500. The search mandate for this seat is the law-firm chief financial officer search. Partner profit, which is the residual this salary sits inside, is on the profits-per-partner page.

Primary US cell — PwC, 2025 Senior Administrative Leaders Compensation & Staffing Report, issued June 2025, group “AmLaw 100 xNYC - Firms (45 members)”: CFO median aggregate $817,500 as of 1 January 2025, n=32. 2025 SAL sample ↗
The June 2024 sample for the 44-member group is the prior cell, not a restatement. Armanino’s 2025 Northern California sample is the director-of-finance cross-check, and its CFO rows are empty. Knights and Gateley are single-company filings for the year ended 30 April 2025. The $3.59 million PEP figure is the Am Law 100 average for fiscal 2025. The $3.8 million public-company CFO average is a contrast from Squire Patton Boggs’s October 2026 proxy note, not a law-firm data point. The interview count is 48, from July 2024 through June 2026. The search count is 11, from January 2022 through June 2026.
Law firm CFO salary: common questions
What is a law firm CFO salary in 2026?
Law firm CFO salary in 2026 is a range with a dated median, not a new survey cell for January 2026. PwC’s Senior Administrative Leaders report, issued June 2025, put median aggregate pay at $817,500 as of 1 January 2025 for chief financial officers in the group it labels AmLaw 100 xNYC - Firms (45 members), on 32 responses. Median base on that date was $672,500. The 3rd-quartile aggregate was $709,124 and the 1st-quartile aggregate was $1,057,638. In PwC’s layout the 1st quartile is the higher number.
How do base, bonus and aggregate differ?
In the June 2025 PwC report, base is the annual salary as of 1 January 2025, bonus is the award for the year ending 2024, and aggregate compensation combines base and bonus. The CFO median base was $672,500 (n=32), the median bonus was $187,500 (n=30), and the median aggregate was $817,500 (n=32). Adding the two medians produces $860,000, which is $42,500 above the aggregate median, because each column is its own distribution.
How does law firm CFO pay compare with equity-partner profits?
The $817,500 median aggregate is 22.8 percent of the Am Law 100 average profits per equity partner of $3.59 million for fiscal 2025, as recapped by Original Jurisdiction on 30 April 2026. The populations differ: an ex-New York City administrative-leader cell versus the full Am Law 100 equity residual. Average public-company CFO pay in Squire Patton Boggs’s October 2026 DC 100 note was US$3.8 million. That seat is not a law-firm wage. $817,500 is 21.5 percent of $3.8 million.
What does a UK listed law firm pay its CFO?
Two filings, reported separately. Knights’ chief financial officer, Kate Lewis, received a single-figure total of £394,000 for the year ended 30 April 2025 (salary £280,000, bonus £100,000, pension £14,000), and her salary rose to £294,000 from 1 May 2025. Knights’ revenue that year was £162.0 million. Gateley’s chief financial officer, Neil Smith, received £407,000 for the year ended 30 April 2025 (salary and fees £300,000, bonus £100,000). His salary rose to £315,000 from 1 May 2025. Gateley’s revenue was £179.5 million. These are not a UK average.
How should a firm price a law-firm CFO search?
Price the package off the cell that matches the firm, then write the bonus formula into the offer. On the PwC median aggregate of $817,500, a retained search fee of 25–30 percent of first-year total compensation is $204,375 to $245,250. The retainer is 30 percent of that fee. Across 11 law-firm chief financial officer searches Sartori & Partners opened from January 2022 through June 2026, 2 of 4 Am Law files stalled after the second interview because the compensation committee would not put the bonus formula in the offer. The search we run for this seat is law-firm chief financial officer search.
