What law firm partner salary Milan pays in 2026

A general counsel who must fund a Milan partner, and the partner reading the letter, are not looking at one number. The dated public prints are a 2024 district tax mean, a 2025 revenue-per-partner figure, and a 2026 contribution rate. None of those is the cash the partner keeps.

Censis and Cassa Forense, on 29 April 2026, put mean IRPEF income in the Milan forensic district at €93,604 for tax year 2024, across 30,139 lawyers. Nationally, 61.7 percent of the profession filed under €35,000. Wrong product for a partner seat.

What a socio is, and what the tax return actually records.

The year sits on every figure. The district mean is tax year 2024, published in April 2026. The revenue table is calendar 2025, published in May 2026. The contribution rate that hits a 2026 draw is 17 percent.

Censis and Cassa Forense presented the tenth report on the profession on 29 April 2026. The survey behind the organizational tables ran in January and February 2026 and collected 30,709 questionnaires. The income tables are tax year 2024. Total IRPEF income of the profession was €11,239 million, up 7.1 percent on 2023. The national mean was €51,912, up 8.9 percent. VAT turnover was €16,441 million, and mean VAT turnover was €75,936. Lombardy’s mean IRPEF was €87,475, index 168.5 against the national figure. The Milan forensic district, 30,139 lawyers and 51.9 percent women, posted a mean of €93,604, index 180.3. Rome’s district mean was €64,825. A general counsel who treats €93,604 as the Milan partner number is averaging every filer in the district, including the national mass under €35,000.

The income pyramid makes the average unsafe. Excluding the 5.3 percent who did not file, 61.7 percent of members were under €35,000 in 2024, down from 64.6 percent in 2023. Of those above that line, 17.2 percent sat between €35,000 and €58,400, 13.1 percent up to €121,900, and 7.9 percent above €121,900. That top cell is 17,197 people out of 228,641 members. Partner economics, if they appear at all, live in that thin band and above it. They do not live at the mean.

A socio is not one contract. MAG’s May 2026 LC Best 50 counts equity and non-equity partners in the same socio total: about 12,512 professionals and 2,094 soci, mean revenue per person €355,000, mean revenue per socio €2.1 million, on €4.082 billion, up 8.9 percent on the prior-year perimeter. Legalcommunity’s account of Deloitte Legal and STS, year to 31 May 2025, is the clean public split: 129 soci, of whom 48 were equity and 81 were salary partners, aggregate revenue €369 million, up from €340 million. Three lateral partner entries and 17 internal promotions sat on that Italy-wide Tax and Legal platform. It is not a Milan equity draw, and it includes tax partners. Read it as proof that the word socio covers two letters.

Revenue per socio is turnover, not a paycheck. The quotient of MAG’s headline totals is not how this page uses €2.1 million: that figure is the average MAG printed. The per-partner table, same vintage, prints Latham Italy at €11.2 million on nine partners and €100.38 million of revenue, Chiomenti at €4.1 million on €264 million and 65 partners, and BonelliErede at €2.7 million against a main-table revenue of €258.5 million and 95 partners. Ten percent of the fifty declined. Ninety percent grew. None of those rows is cash the partner takes home.

Google Ads Keyword Planner recorded zero average monthly searches for law firm partner salary Milan, measured 11 September 2026. The page is written for a general counsel who has to fund the seat, not for a query with a volume.

The Ordine degli Avvocati di Milano is a smaller roll than the forensic district. The 2025 bilancio lists 22,137 lawyers at 31 December 2025, against 21,861 a year earlier, and 3,675 praticanti against 3,715. Use the bar roll when the question is who may appear. Use the district mean only when the question is the tax distribution of a wider map. Use neither when the question is what an equity partner kept.

03 When revenue is the right comparator

Revenue per partner is a capacity check for a Milan office, not a salary.

An international firm pricing a lateral book, or a company asking whether a US desk in Milan can staff a deal, can use revenue density. The same figure is the wrong bid for the partner’s own cash.

Office capacityPersonal cash

  1. Revenue density MAG’s 2025 revenue per socio, equity and non-equity together. Useful when the question is how much work a partnership turns, not what one partner keeps.
  2. Named-firm row Latham Italy at €11.2 million, Chiomenti at €4.1 million, the fifty at €2.1 million. Italy-wide estimates. Still turnover.
  3. The letter Equity residual or salary-partner wage. Lock-up, capital and the Cassa line are in the deed and the tax return, not in the revenue row.

By late summer 2025, Global Legal Post, citing Pirical, counted 16 of the top 100 US firms with a Milan office and roughly 746 legal professionals, headcount broadly stable over three years. That is a presence fact. It is not a profit-per-equity-partner table, and this page does not convert a global PEP into euros. A US desk that staffs Italian private equity still has to price the partner on an Italian letter. The public Italian cell for that desk is revenue, which answers whether the office turns work. It does not answer what the partner would keep if the partner stayed.

KPMG Corporate Finance, writing from Milan on 23 December 2025, counted about 1,350 Italian deals and, in the table, 1,351 deals worth €69.8 billion, down 6 percent in volume and 12 percent in value from 1,441 deals and €79.4 billion in 2024. Financial services were 91 deals and €26.9 billion, 38 percent of value. A partner whose book is that flow is busy. Busyness is not a draw. A company hiring that partner as its first general counsel is buying judgment on the next deal, not a share of €69.8 billion.

Latham Italy’s €11.2 million is revenue per partner, not cash. Chiomenti’s €4.1 million, on a stable 65 partners and revenue up about 20 percent to €264 million, is the same kind of number at an independent Italian firm. A compensation committee that pastes either figure into an offer as if it were salary will overbid a salary partner and underbid an equity partner whose residual, after Cassa and IRPEF, is a different arithmetic. The deed has the residual. The MAG row does not.

We do not match revenue per partner. We match what the partner would keep after Cassa and IRPEF, then we put the rest in a company package.

04 When it is not

The district mean, the salary-partner wage, and the in-house seat are three refusals.

Revenue density fails as soon as the letter is a wage, a tax mean, or a company payroll. Each of those products has its own public anchor. None of them is €2.1 million.

Wrong anchorThe contract

  1. District mean €93,604 averages the Milan forensic district. Most of the national profession is under €35,000. A partner draw is not that average.
  2. Salary partner A wage inside the firm. Deloitte’s 81 salary partners are the public proof that socio does not mean owner.
  3. Off the albo Employment as giurista d’impresa. Law 247/2012 art. 18 ends the enrollment. The package is a company grade.
  4. Equity residual Only this letter is a draw after Cassa and IRPEF. Match it with cash kept, not with revenue.

The district mean is a tax return, not a partner draw. Women in the Milan district earned 40.9 percent of the male mean in tax year 2024, the same Censis table that prints €93,604. A company that takes the district mean, or a male equity anecdote, and applies it to a woman salary partner will miss twice: once on the product, once on the distribution inside the product. National means by sex, same tax year, were €67,959 for men and €33,829 for women. Those are profession-wide, not Milan partners. They are enough to stop a single-number brief.

Organization of the profession, from the 2026 Censis survey, shows how thin the partnership slice is. Sole practice was 66.2 percent. Lawyers working prevalently as collaborators were 10.0 percent. Owners of a studio with collaborators were 9.8 percent. Members of an associated studio, STA or STP were 9.1 percent. Exclusive single-client collaboration was 5.0 percent. Among lawyers aged 40 or under, 2.7 percent were contributing soci in an associated studio, against 5.9 percent at all ages. A lateral partner search is a search inside a small cell of that map. The €93,604 mean is the map, not the cell.

How Italian lawyers organize their work, Censis survey January–February 2026. Partnership is a thin slice of the profession, which is why a district mean cannot price a socio.

Censis / Cassa Forense, X Rapporto, survey 2026

Leaving the studio for a company changes legal status. Law 247/2012 art. 18 still makes the profession of avvocato incompatible with subordinate employment. A giurista d’impresa gives advice for the employer and is off the albo. Law 28 July 2026, n. 137, in force 16 August 2026, rewrites the società tra avvocati and still does not create an employed private-company lawyer on the roll; the operating statute until the decrees is the 2012 law. The governance rewrite is on the family-studio page. What matters for pay is narrower: the in-house offer is payroll. D.lgs. 7 May 2026, n. 96, applies pay transparency to employed relationships from 7 June 2026. It does not apply to a classic self-employed collaboration the partner is leaving.

In-house cash for Milan counsel is a different table. The benchmarks for a general counsel package in Italy, including the levers a company actually pulls once the lawyer has left the roll, sit on the Italy compensation page. Net comparisons across Dubai, Milan and London for legal talent sit on the three-city net page. Neither of those pages is a partner residual, and this page does not rebuild them.

05 Who pays the figure

The company matches cash kept. The partner is selling a residual or a wage.

Company files hire a partner into a general counsel, chief legal officer, or head of legal seat. Firm files hire a lateral. The payer is different. The mistake is the same if the first number is public turnover.

The general counsel, the chief financial officer, and the board that must fund the seat.

Across 250 structured interviews with Milan lawyers, general counsel and legal leaders, over a trailing 36-month window, 61 were general counsel, chiefs of legal, or heads of legal at Milan companies. Of those 61, 37 said they cannot match revenue per partner, because the company pays employment cash and, where it exists, equity in the company, not a residual of studio turnover. That is the payer’s constraint. A listed industrial group in Milan hired a private-equity partner from an international firm’s Milan office as its first general counsel. The accepted offer landed in 19 weeks, inside a line whose typical band is 4 to 7 months.

Of 15 closed searches on this line, 9 were company-side. 4 of those 9 were a company’s first general counsel, including the listed industrial file. The other 5 were replacements or second seats: a chief legal officer beside an existing general counsel, or a head of legal under one. The budget those companies wrote was grade, bonus, and any equity the company already used for the executive bench. None of those company files matched €2.1 million, and none matched €93,604. The general counsel search is the company product. The partner search is the firm product. They share a candidate and they do not share a paycheck.

A general counsel at a listed Milan industrial put the rule without decoration: We do not match revenue per partner. We match what the partner would keep after Cassa and IRPEF, then we put the rest in a company package.

The equity partner, the salary partner, and the counsel who has been told a path to socio exists.

Of the same 250 interviews, 86 were equity or salary partners at Milan offices of Italian or international firms, 64 were associates or counsel who discussed a path to socio, 61 were general counsel, chiefs of legal, or heads of legal, and 39 were in-house counsel below that line. Those groups are the whole cohort. Of those partners, 51 said the first number a company or a lateral committee put on the table was either the district IRPEF mean or revenue per socio, not cash after Cassa and IRPEF. Of those associates and counsel, 19 had a written path to socio. The rest described a title without a capital account.

Of the 6 firm-side files inside the 15, 2 were salary-partner seats rather than equity. The compensation chair at an international firm’s Milan office separated the letters: An equity letter and a salary-partner letter are different products. The district mean is neither. An earner who is asked to “match Milan partner pay” should ask which letter. The equity letter carries capital and lock-up. The salary letter carries a wage. The district mean carries neither.

Four seats a 2026 Milan brief collapses into one phrase. The comparator is the letter, not the headline.

06 What cash leaves out

Cassa, the top IRPEF rate, and the capital the mapping does not show.

A cash figure that ignores the 2026 contribution and the sterilized bracket cut will not survive the partner’s own accountant. The mapping does not repair that. It does not record lock-up.

Cassa at 17 percent is a contribution, not a salary. The Regolamento Unico sets the subjective rate at 16 percent for 2025, up to a cap, with 3 percent above it, then 17 percent for 2026 and 18 percent from 2027. For 2026 the board revalued the cap: FISCOeTASSE records 17 percent up to €131,800 and 3 percent above, a minimum subjective contribution of €2,790, and a minimum integrative contribution of €355, with the first instalment due 28 February 2026. A partner whose professional income is far above the cap pays 17 percent on the slice to €131,800 and 3 percent after. That is not a flat 17 percent on the whole draw, and it is not IRPEF.

IRPEF, on the Agenzia delle Entrate page updated 13 January 2026, is 23 percent up to €28,000. From 2024 the second bracket was 35 percent between €28,001 and €50,000, and 43 percent above €50,000. The 2026 budget, legge n. 199/2025, cuts that second bracket from 35 percent to 33 percent, so the tax above €50,000 is stated as €13,700 plus 43 percent of the excess. Taxpayers with reddito complessivo above €200,000 have that benefit sterilized. A high-earning equity partner does not keep the 2026 rate cut. The marginal rate on the top slice remains 43 percent, and the Cassa line is additional.

Sartori maps about 5,000 lawyers in Milan. That map records who is on a Milan desk and in which kind of seat. It does not record lock-up, capital contribution, or the partner’s drawings account. A company that asks for the Milan partner number will not receive one from the map. The research programme is the file those interviews and that map belong to. Quarterly surveys have run since 2019 on the wider programme. They do not publish a Milan equity-partner cell, because the public sources above do not contain one.

Seniority means in the same 2024 tax year, for non-pensioned lawyers nationally, peak at €102,202 for 35 to 39 years of seniority, about seven times the €14,571 mean of the first four years. The 40-plus band is €94,901. Those are national means by years since enrollment, not Milan partners, and not equity draws. They are the right contrast when a brief treats “20 years’ call” as if it priced a socio. It prices a point on a national curve whose top is still near the Milan district mean, which is itself not partner pay.

07 How to price the seat

How a Milan partner seat gets priced.

The uncomfortable fact is that some closed files started from a public number that is not compensation. Those files had to be rewritten before an offer could be honest.

Sartori has worked the Milan partner line for 8 years and closed 15 searches over the trailing three years, at a 93 percent completion rate, typically in 4 to 7 months. Counter-offer incidence on the line is 41 percent. The median from offer to acceptance is 18 working days. Of those closed searches, 9 were companies and 6 were firms, as set out above. 4 of those closed searches opened on the wrong public print. Those files were laterals and replacements, not the first-counsel hires. Their first paper used the €93,604 mean or the €2.1 million revenue figure as if it were take-home. Each paper was rewritten. Those files sat at the long end of the 4 to 7 months band. The listed industrial first-counsel hire, at 19 weeks, was not one of them.

That miss is on the brief, and it is ours to surface. A mapping of lawyers does not contain the drawings account, so a search that starts from the district mean spends its opening on discovering the letter. The partner who receives a counter-offer from the studio is comparing a residual the company has not seen. At a 41 percent counter-offer incidence, the company that has already matched the wrong product will lose the week that matters, which is the 18 working days after the offer, not the month spent debating €93,604.

Pricing rules that do not move. Match cash the partner would keep after the 2026 Cassa line and after IRPEF, then build the company package around that kept cash. If the letter is a salary-partner wage, match the wage, not the equity rumor in the same partnership. If the seat is in-house, price it as employment off the albo and read the Italy general-counsel benchmarks, not this revenue table. Sartori works retained only. The fee is 25 to 30 percent of first-year total compensation, and the retainer is 30 percent of that fee. A conversation starts at a call or at the client enquiry form.

  1. 01 Is the public figure revenue, a tax mean, or a letter? If it is €93,604 or €2.1 million, stop. Neither is cash kept.
  2. 02 Is the letter equity or salary? If the partnership will not say, you do not yet have a number to match.
  3. 03 Does the move take the lawyer off the albo? If yes, price employment, bonus and any company equity. Do not price a socio residual.
  4. 04 Match cash after Cassa and IRPEF, then write the company package. Hold the offer window to the line’s 18 working days. A rewritten brief belongs at the start of the search.

External figures carry the year and the publisher in the same sentence. The Milan partner counts are Sartori & Partners data from the city line.

The research programme is the first source on this page. Censis and Cassa Forense are the source for the 2024 income distribution and the 2026 organizational survey. The Ordine degli Avvocati di Milano bilancio is the source for the 22,137 roll. MAG is the source for 2025 revenue per socio. The Agenzia delle Entrate page, updated 13 January 2026, is the source for the IRPEF brackets and the sterilization above €200,000. Cassa Forense and the 2026 minima note are the source for the 17 percent rate. KPMG’s 23 December 2025 flash is the source for the 1,351 deals. Pirical, via Global Legal Post, is the source for the US-firm headcount in Milan, which is presence, not pay.

US-firm strategy in the city, including why a public PEP table does not underwrite a Milan residual, is on the rainmaker note. This page does not restyle that argument. It prices the letter.

Milan partner pay, in short

What is law firm partner salary Milan in 2026?

There is no published equity-partner paycheck; the 2024 Milan district mean is €93,604. Censis and Cassa Forense reported that mean on 29 April 2026 for 30,139 lawyers, which is not the Milan bar roll of 22,137. MAG in May 2026 put 2025 revenue per socio at €2.1 million, and that figure is turnover. Sartori closed 15 Milan partner searches over three years, typically in 4 to 7 months.

Is €2.1 million a Milan partner salary?

No. MAG’s May 2026 print is 2025 revenue per socio, €2.1 million, not take-home cash. The same table puts Latham Italy at €11.2 million of revenue per partner on nine partners and Chiomenti at €4.1 million on 65. Those are Italy-wide business-law estimates, equity and non-equity together. A company that matches the revenue figure is buying turnover.

What should a company match when hiring a Milan partner as general counsel?

Sartori closed 15 Milan partner searches over three years, typically in 4 to 7 months. 9 of those files were company-side, and 4 of the 9 were a company’s first general counsel. The match is cash the partner would keep after Cassa and IRPEF, then a company package. A listed industrial group hired a private-equity partner as its first general counsel in 19 weeks.

How long does a Milan partner search take, and what happens after the offer?

The Milan partner line typically runs 4 to 7 months, with 18 working days from offer to acceptance. Counter-offer incidence on that line is 41 percent. Completion on the same line is 93 percent. Sartori has worked the Milan partner line for 8 years. The fee is retained only: 25 to 30 percent of first-year total compensation, retainer 30 percent of the fee.

Does the 2026 IRPEF cut raise what a Milan equity partner keeps?

Above €200,000 the 2026 cut from 35 percent to 33 percent is sterilized, so the marginal rate stays 43 percent. Agenzia delle Entrate, page updated 13 January 2026, sets 23 percent to €28,000, then the second bracket, then 43 percent above €50,000. Cassa Forense sets the 2026 subjective rate at 17 percent up to the revalued cap. A high draw does not keep the bracket cut.

Are the Milan bar and the Milan forensic district the same headcount?

They are different counts: 22,137 lawyers on the Milan bar at 31 December 2025, and 30,139 in the Cassa forensic district. The €93,604 mean belongs to the district, tax year 2024, not to the Ordine roll. Nationally, 61.7 percent of the profession filed under €35,000 in 2024, and 7.9 percent filed above €121,900. The district mean is pulled by a thin top.
