Lawyer Salary in Manchester 2026
After the 2025-26 UK NQ round, the figure a Manchester company must match is a dated cell: DLA Piper named the city among six regional offices at £84,000 on 6 July 2026; Addleshaw Goddard remains on a frozen £65,000. This page is that table, in GBP and USD, for the solicitor who earns it and the general counsel who pays it.

DLA Piper regional NQ including Manchester, 6 July 2026: £84,000 (~$113,700 at the Bank of England 10 September 2026 spot). Legal Cheek and Legal Business both recorded the 2.5 percent step from £82,000. Legal Cheek ↗
Four published cells, four different payroll decisions. The full table — including CMS, Shoosmiths and the trainee rungs — sits in section 02. USD converts GBP at the Bank of England 10 September 2026 spot; no firm published a Manchester dollar salary.
Sartori & Partners has worked the Manchester associate market for more than 10 years, for companies putting a solicitor on the payroll and for national-firm Manchester offices filling corporate, commercial-property and employment seats. Over the trailing three years we closed 33 associate searches at a 93 percent completion rate, on a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks. The national and London tables already live on this site; this page owns the city cells those pages do not carry.

The 2026 solicitor salary Manchester table a company must match
Every GBP cell carries the year of the rate. Every USD cell converts that GBP base at the Bank of England 10 September 2026 spot. Associate bands above NQ are unpublished on the pages and are not estimated.
The Law Society, on 19 June 2025, put 13,700 solicitors in the North West. That is the regional stock around this table, not a Manchester headcount, and it is the only dated professional-body figure for the region. The Solicitors Regulation Authority counted 178,428 practicing solicitors in England and Wales at July 2026. Neither series is a wage. The wage a newly qualified solicitor earns in this city, and the wage a general counsel must put on an offer letter, is the published NQ cell of the firm that just qualified them.

CMS Manchester NQ of £68,000 is a June 2025 cell; no later CMS Manchester figure was found, so the 2025 rate remains the last published number. Addleshaw Goddard’s £65,000 Manchester cell was set on 24 September 2024, as The Global Legal Post reported that day, and held across all UK offices on 5 September 2025. DLA Piper’s £84,000 regional cell of 6 July 2026 is the only 2026 move that names Manchester in the announcement itself.
Addleshaw Goddard is the floor of the published table and the largest national-firm payroll in the city we can count. Insider Media, reporting the firm’s FY25 results on 22 August 2025, put more than 630 people in the Manchester office. The firm itself, on 19 August 2025, reported UK-wide revenue of £550.9 million for the 12 months to 30 April 2025, profit of £224.1 million and PEP of £1 million. The 5 September 2025 freeze left NQ cash flat and, on the same reporting, attached a £19 million bonus pot and retained 88 percent of the autumn qualifying cohort on permanent roles. A general counsel matching last year’s AG cell is matching a freeze, not a 2026 raise.
The spread a company actually chooses is £19,000. DLA Piper’s 2026 regional NQ of £84,000 sits 29 percent above Addleshaw Goddard’s frozen £65,000. That gap is the whole pricing decision for an in-house NQ seat in this city. An offer written to the freeze will not hold a candidate coming off the DLA or Eversheds desks.
The figure a company must match is a dated cell, not a UK average.
The same city pays this figure on two seats.
National-firm Manchester offices publish the NQ cell. Companies, universities and the combined authority hire the people those offices qualify — and buy the same desks as clients.
Undercut the freezeMatch the regional ceiling
- Pay below the freeze Independent and ABS employers, and some in-house grades, sit off the published table. The candidate from a DLA or Eversheds NQ cohort does not.
- Match the mid-table Pinsent Masons, CMS and Shoosmiths. Enough to hold a regional qualifier who is not sitting on the 2026 DLA or Eversheds cell.
- Match the ceiling DLA Piper and Eversheds Sutherland regional NQ. The cell a general counsel clears to hire off those Manchester desks this autumn.
Legal 500 UK 2026 ranks Addleshaw Goddard and DLA Piper in Corporate and commercial: Manchester at tier 1, with CMS and Pinsent Masons at tier 2. The same edition puts Addleshaw Goddard at tier 1 for Commercial property: Manchester (regeneration, build-to-rent, student accommodation) and Pinsent Masons at tier 2. Eversheds Sutherland sits at Legal 500 2026 Employment tier 1 for the North West, with the directory copy describing a Manchester-based employment group. Chambers UK 2026 Employment, North West, puts Addleshaw Goddard, DAC Beachcroft, DLA Piper and Eversheds Sutherland in Band 1. Those are the desks whose NQ cells sit in section 02.
Squire Patton Boggs has run a full-service Manchester office at No 1 Spinningfields since 1993; Legal 500 2026 places it at Corporate Manchester tier 1 for mid-market cross-border M&A. Hill Dickinson, on 2 October 2025, reported 17 Legal 500 UK 2026 Tier 1 rankings including Employment, Pensions, Private Client, Public Sector Education, Public Sector Health, Transport and Debt Recovery in the North West, and on 13 January 2025 announced a Manchester real-estate partner hire into a regeneration seat working a longstanding collaboration with Manchester City Council. Gateley, AIM-listed since 2015, is profiled by Chambers UK 2026 with a Manchester office at Ship Canal House and North West rankings in corporate, employment, restructuring, banking, IT, IP, real estate and litigation. None of those three published a 2026 Manchester NQ cell on the pages, so they appear here as employers and buyers, not as pay rows.
The dated NQ cells in section 02 are law-firm bases. A newly qualified solicitor earns them on a Manchester practicing certificate after SQE (or LPC transitional) admission.
- National-firm Manchester offices set the published table. DLA Piper, Eversheds Sutherland, Pinsent Masons, CMS, Shoosmiths and Addleshaw Goddard are the six payers with a cell.
- North West independents run a parallel ladder that is not in the table. Brabners states 600+ colleagues, a 60-strong corporate team firmwide, 168 transactions in the last reported year at around £1 billion, and 30+ employment lawyers and support staff in Manchester. JMW, on 22 July 2025, reported turnover of £94 million and a workforce of 792.
- Insurance and PI platforms hire at different economics. DWF’s Aquila TopCo mid-year update of 30 January 2026 described demand as strong in regulated and insurance-led sectors, without a Manchester NQ cell. Express Solicitors, a Manchester personal-injury ABS, told Solicitors Journal on 16 September 2025 of £88.5 million turnover, 800+ staff and a graduate training cohort of 125. Volume PI is not the corporate NQ table.
- Clarke Willmott on 3 July 2025 reported firmwide revenue of £64.7 million and a Manchester partner-group expansion in employment, real-estate development, planning and infrastructure, property litigation, construction, corporate, private capital and commercial litigation. Those labels are the hiring practices the firm itself named.
The company reader pays the same figure when hiring an NQ or junior solicitor onto the payroll, or when paying the rate card those bases support. The Law Society Annual Statistics Report 2023, dated 23 January 2025, put 22 percent of England-and-Wales practicing-certificate holders in-house at July 2023 (35,738 people), against 59 percent in private practice.
- Russell Group legal affairs. The University of Manchester StaffNet Legal Affairs page lists a General Counsel and Executive Director of Legal Affairs and Board Secretariat, associate directors for employment and for property, procurement and projects, and senior legal counsel in employment, education, regulatory and compliance, and property. That is the cleanest public in-house org chart for this city. The grades are unpublished.
- Statutory combined-authority seat. The Greater Manchester Combined Authority constitution of March 2026 names a Group Solicitor and Monitoring Officer, a statutory appointment under section 5 of the Local Government and Housing Act 1989, with bulk legal work commissioned from Manchester City Council. Public-body solicitors sit on local-government scales. No 2026 NJC solicitor band was found; it is omitted.
- Company legal teams by type. Legal 500 2026 key-client lists on the Manchester corporate and property pages, stated as types: listed retailer; consumer-goods manufacturer; national grocery mutual; telecoms plc; energy and water utilities; airport-group company; sportswear brand; private-equity houses; hotel and real-estate consortium; healthcare REIT; regional bank. Invest Manchester’s FPBS Factsheet 2025 records 60+ banks and 60,000 banking and financial-services employees in the city-region. A named general-counsel org chart was found only for the university; bank and utility titles are not invented here.
A company hiring a general counsel or counsel onto that payroll briefs the seat as a retained search: in-house legal recruiters in Manchester.

Four regimes, not a national average, set whom a company can hire.
Employment statute, a spatial plan through 2039, building-safety litigation and a fraud offence already in force decide which Manchester seats a general counsel opens — and which NQ cell those seats must clear.
Statute already liveMulti-year spatial plan
- Employment rights Day-one family leave, sick pay and the Fair Work Agency are live. Unfair-dismissal redesign lands on 1 January 2027. This is an employment-desk wave, not a corporate-M&A seat.
- Building safety and fraud Supply-chain liability after disposal, group-company Building Liability Orders, and failure-to-prevent-fraud procedures. Construction, real-estate and corporate-crime seats, mid-level rather than NQ.
- Places for Everyone Nine Greater Manchester districts, statutory from 21 March 2024, plan to 2039. Planning, section-106, compulsory purchase and regeneration solicitors stay busy through a down year for FDI.
The Employment Rights Act 2025 received Royal Assent on 18 December 2025, Acas records. The GOV.UK implementation timeline, updated 25 August 2026, is the hiring calendar a Manchester head of legal actually works from. On 6 April 2026, paternity and unpaid parental leave became day-one rights, statutory sick pay became a day-one payment with the Lower Earnings Limit removed, the collective-redundancy protective award maximum doubled, and sexual-harassment disclosures became whistleblowing qualifying disclosures. On 7 April 2026 the Fair Work Agency was established. On 1 October 2026 Employment Tribunal time limits move from three months to six. On 30 October 2026 the duty to inform workers of the right to join a union, union access, the “all reasonable steps” sexual-harassment duty and third-party harassment liability arrive together. On 1 January 2027 the unfair-dismissal qualifying period falls from two years to six months, compensatory awards are uncapped, and most fire-and-rehire dismissals become automatically unfair.
That calendar is why Chambers UK 2026 Band 1 North West employment desks — and the in-house employment counsel who instruct them — are the 2026–27 hiring story in this city. Of 88 respondents in the same cohort sitting as hiring managers in national-firm Manchester or North West offices over a 24-month window, 41 named employment as the NQ-to-3 PQE seat they could not fill without matching the latest regional cell. A head of legal at a North West listed retailer described the Employment Rights Act timeline as the reason they opened a 3-PQE employment-counsel seat in 2026 rather than sending another instruction to the panel.
Places for Everyone became the statutory development plan for nine Greater Manchester districts on 21 March 2024 (Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Tameside, Trafford, Wigan; Stockport had withdrawn from the predecessor). The plan runs to 2039. The Greater Manchester Combined Authority Integrated Settlement Outcomes Framework for 2025/26, published by GOV.UK on 8 April 2025, still targets 1,954 new homes started and 2,931 homes of capacity in that year, plus 1,056 businesses supported, 169 jobs in priority sectors and 4,587 square meters of additional floorspace. Planning, highways, section-106, compulsory-purchase and regeneration solicitors at the ranked real-estate desks, and inside Manchester City Council Regeneration Legal and the GMCA Monitoring Officer function, are on a multi-year clock. A down year for inbound capital does not cancel that clock.
Invest Manchester, on 23 June 2026, citing the EY 2026 UK Attractiveness Survey, counted 31 Manchester FDI projects in 2025, down 30 percent from 44 in 2024. The city was still the strongest UK performer outside London for the fourth time in six years. Finance, Business and Professional Services accounted for 4 of those 31 projects. North West FDI employment created rose to 3,161 from 2,755. Fewer inbound-investment corporate mandates in 2026 than in 2025 does not cancel domestic regeneration, and it does not cancel the employment-statute wave.
Building-safety work is the other real-estate overlay. CMS’s Building Safety Act Annual Review 2026, dated 24 March 2026, recorded Gateway 2 average approval of nine months from October 2023 to March 2025 against a 12-week statutory aim, with new-scheme waits back around 13 weeks by February 2026. The Supreme Court in URS Corporation Ltd v BDW Trading Ltd [2025] UKSC 21 held that developers may pursue the supply chain under the Building Safety Act 2022 and the Defective Premises Act 1972 years after disposing of the asset. The Technology and Construction Court in Crest Nicholson Regeneration Ltd v Ardmore Construction Ltd [2026] EWHC 789 (TCC), 30 June 2026, gave the first fully contested guidance on Building Liability Orders, including an anticipatory order against associated companies, treating an adjudicator’s award of about £14.9 million as a relevant liability. Construction-disputes and real-estate due-diligence solicitors in the Manchester regeneration pipeline are 3 PQE to partner seats, not NQ cells — but they are why a general counsel at a housebuilder still opens files in a year when FDI fell.
Two further regimes sit on the company side of the payroll. The failure-to-prevent-fraud offence in the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023 came into force on 1 September 2025: large organizations are criminally liable if an associated person commits fraud intending to benefit the organization, unless reasonable prevention procedures were in place. That is a 4-PQE+ in-house financial-crime and investigations hire at banks, insurers and large Manchester corporates, not an NQ. Separately, the Solicitors Regulation Authority on 17 August 2026 issued a warning notice on misuse of AI after 42 reports of potential misuse between July 2025 and July 2026. Individuals remain responsible for the work; the hiring consequence is supervision and COLP capacity, not a junior-headcount cut.
The cyclical overlay is cheaper money that has not yet arrived. The Bank of England has held Bank Rate at 3.75 percent, with CPI at 2.9 percent against a 2 percent target and the next Monetary Policy Committee meeting listed for 17 September 2026. JLL, on 21 August 2026, recorded Manchester office take-up of 190,000 square feet in Q2 2026, vacancy of 10.9 percent, new-build vacancy of 1.2 percent (the lowest since 2020) and prime rent of £48.00 per square foot, up from £45.00 in Q1. Savills, on 28 May 2026, recorded BNY acquiring 4 Angel Square for £114 million at a 6.86 percent yield — 200,000 square feet, the largest Big Six regional office investment in two years — with owner-occupiers 35 percent of 2025 regional office investment volumes. A US custody bank expanding a Manchester headquarters is a real-estate, banking-regulatory and workplace-employment instruction, mixed seniority, 2026 timing.
What a general counsel actually puts on the offer letter.
In-house pay committees in this region already price junior seats against named national-firm regional NQ cells. Mandate telemetry on the Manchester files shows where that pricing holds, and where it does not.
Across Sartori’s London interview cohort (750 structured interviews), 71 of 126 general counsel, heads of legal and senior in-house counsel with a Greater Manchester or North West brief, over a 24-month window, said they price junior in-house offers against a named national-firm regional NQ cell rather than against a UK median. That is the buyer behavior this table is built for. The national mix is context only: 22 percent of practicing-certificate holders sat in-house at July 2023, on the Law Society Annual Statistics Report 2023 published 23 January 2025.
Of 33 closed associate searches over three years, 14 were Manchester-sited NQ-to-5 PQE seats in corporate, commercial property or employment. Nine of those 14 were private-practice laterals into national-firm Manchester offices; five were in-house junior seats at utilities, retailers, developers or a university or public body. Sartori’s mandate telemetry on those 14 files records a 35 percent counter-offer incidence (5 of 14) and a median 12 working days from offer to signature, inside the typical 6-to-12-week search. Completion on the parent 33 closed files is 93 percent.
The uncomfortable number sits inside the same 14. Four first offers were written below the then-published DLA Piper or Eversheds Sutherland regional NQ cell and had to be rewritten before the candidate would sign. Two of those four still failed after the rewrite, and the file was re-opened. We close most of this book. We do not close it when a company insists the freeze is the market. A general counsel at a Greater Manchester water-and-waste utility told us, inside that 24-month window, that they had “priced last year’s Pinsents cell and lost the seat twice.”
Three composite engagements, described by employer type and tier only, show how that telemetry reads in a live search. None names a real company, firm or candidate.
Utility, employment counsel. A Greater Manchester utility’s head of legal opened a 2-to-4 PQE employment-counsel seat in the second quarter of 2026, with the Fair Work Agency live and the January 2027 unfair-dismissal redesign on the board agenda. The first offer was written to the Pinsent Masons Manchester NQ cell of £69,000. The shortlist was an NQ coming off a ranked North West employment desk that had just moved to the Eversheds other-UK cell of £80,000. The file took 9 weeks to a rewritten offer at that cell; a counter-offer from the candidate’s firm landed on day 8; signature on day 11. That is the program counter-offer rate and the program acceptance window, on one employment seat.
Developer, planning solicitor. A private-equity-backed North West housebuilder’s general counsel hired a 3-PQE planning and regeneration solicitor against Places for Everyone allocations and the 1,954-home Integrated Settlement target. The search stalled for 4 weeks on a panel-firm conflict: the candidate’s current employer was on the other side of a section-106 file. The conflict cleared; the file closed at 11 weeks, inside the 6-to-12-week band, at a cash number the client set against the CMS Manchester NQ cell of £68,000 plus a PQE step the firm does not publish. We cannot table a PQE ladder we have not sourced. We can table the NQ floor the step sits on.
Retailer, the re-opened file. A listed retailer’s general counsel opened an NQ commercial seat at Addleshaw Goddard’s frozen £65,000. Two candidates declined. The offer was rewritten to Pinsent Masons’ £69,000 and still lost to a DLA Piper regional qualifier on £84,000. The search was re-opened. That file is one of the two rewrites that still failed. It is in the 14, and it is why this page opens on the dated ceiling rather than on the freeze.
An offer below the DLA and Eversheds regional cells loses the NQs those desks just qualified. Companies that want those people in 2026 are not negotiating a national average. They are matching £80,000 or £84,000, or they are hiring a different person.
An offer below the DLA and Eversheds regional cells loses the NQs those desks just qualified.
Trainee pay in Manchester sits on the visa floor.
The NQ cell is the last rung of a pipeline a company also pays for — or cannot sponsor. Pinsent Masons will not sponsor a Manchester trainee on a Skilled Worker visa. CMS's last published first-year cell sits under the new-entrant floor.
CMS Manchester 1st-year trainee (June 2025)
Last published CMS Manchester first-year cell. Sits under the £33,400 new-entrant floor.
Legal Cheek, 6 June 2025 ↗Home Office Skilled Worker rules updated 22 July 2025 set a standard salary requirement of £41,700 or the occupation going rate, whichever is higher. A new-entrant discount — at least £33,400 and 70 percent of the going rate — applies if the worker is under 26, is switching from Student or Graduate, or is working toward a recognized qualification in a UK regulated profession, which includes trainee solicitors. Pinsent Masons’ England training-contract page, as of August 2026, states that Skilled Worker visa sponsorship for trainees is available in London only, not Birmingham, Manchester or Leeds, “due to the current general salary threshold requirement.” Its own Manchester first-year cell is £35,500. CMS last published a Manchester first-year trainee cell of £33,000 in June 2025, which sits under the £33,400 new-entrant floor. A company that wants an internationally qualified trainee in a Manchester seat is either lifting pay above the applicable threshold or it is not sponsoring.
Pinsent Masons also publishes the academic gate on the same page: minimum ABB A-levels (128 UCAS, one sitting, no resits) and a 2.1 degree, with an SQE pathway via an exclusive University of Law PGDL and/or LLM SQE. That is one national firm’s Manchester trainee specification, not the SRA minimum. The SRA SQE Q&A, updated 28 January 2026, requires a degree or equivalent, a pass in SQE1 and SQE2, two years’ full-time (or equivalent) qualifying work experience, and character and suitability. The LPC route remains open until 31 December 2032 for candidates inside transitional arrangements. Qualifying work experience, on the SRA page updated 26 January 2024, is real-life legal services under Legal Services Act 2007 section 12, can sit in up to four organizations, and can include a training contract, paralegal work, a clinic or a law center. A Manchester company can put QWE on its own payroll. It cannot put a Skilled Worker trainee on Pinsent Masons’ Manchester program at the published first-year cell.
Shoosmiths still lists England training-contract seats in Birmingham, Leeds, London and Manchester on its 2026 careers FAQs, with regional NQ at £67,000, regional trainees at £36,000 / £38,000, and a regional solicitor-apprentice scale from £25,000 in year one, rates effective 7 September 2026. Its 31 July 2025 firm news, which set the £67,000 regional NQ from the November pay-review date, also published the only bonus mechanic on this page: a firmwide bonus for FY24/25 of 5 percent of salary to 1,300 eligible staff (£3.5 million), a 1,350 chargeable-hours expectation, individual bonus accruing from 1,485 hours to a cap at 1,900, and a combined bonus opportunity of up to 19 percent of salary. That is one firm’s published overlay, not a Manchester market bonus scale.
What this table cannot see, and will not guess.
Associate bands above NQ, in-house cash, local-government scales and independent-firm NQ bases were not published on the pages. They are omitted. A missing cell is not a rounded midpoint.
TheCityUK’s 2025 report, dated 3 July 2025, put 298,000 people in financial and related professional services in the North West (8.2 percent of regional employment) and £23.6 billion of GVA, with Manchester, Liverpool, Warrington and Salford as the key cities. Invest Manchester’s qualitative claim that Greater Manchester has the highest number of legal offices and fee-earners outside London is promoter copy, not a fee-earner census, and is not used as a count here. Its operating-cost claim of 20 percent below the capital is the same class of line. The measured cluster is the 326,000+ FPBS jobs and £25.5 billion GVA already tabled.
Law Society International Data Insights, dated 9 September 2025, recorded 167,603 practicing solicitors in 2024, up 3 percent, with UK legal-services exports of £9.02 billion in 2024. That export cell is national English-law context. It is not a Manchester wage. The London Commercial Court and LCIA sit on that national page, not on this one.
DWF, Hill Dickinson, Gateley, Brabners and JMW are Manchester employers. None of them published a 2026 NQ base on the pages. Express Solicitors’ 125-trainee cohort is a volume-PI pipeline, not a corporate NQ cell. In-house general-counsel and senior-legal-counsel bands were not on the University of Manchester StaffNet pages, not on the GMCA constitution, and not on any company careers page opened for this article. ONS ASHE Table 15 (region by four-digit occupation) timed out; no North West “legal professionals” median is stated here. Partner drawings are not an associate-line figure and are not this search line.
The SRA counted 8,916 solicitor firms in England and Wales at June 2026 (1,327 sole practitioners, 906 partnerships, 5,234 incorporated companies, 1,421 LLPs). That is national firm stock, declining slowly from 9,169 in January 2025. It does not price a Manchester NQ. Annual keeping-of-the-roll produces July drops on the roll; those are administrative, not a hiring freeze, and they do not move this table.
Companies that need a Manchester solicitor on the payroll, rather than a comparison with London or a national average, brief the in-house and general counsel search or the associate recruiting desk. The national table lives on lawyer salary in the UK, 2026; the London cells this page uses only as contrast live on lawyer salary in London, 2026. Companies searching legal recruiters Manchester are usually trying to match this table, not a national band. How we coin the interview cohort, the closed-search count and the offer-to-acceptance window is on the methodology page and the research program.
Manchester solicitor pay: questions from both sides of the offer
What is the solicitor salary Manchester figure a company must match in 2026?
Published 2026 Manchester NQ bases run from Addleshaw Goddard’s frozen £65,000 (~$87,900) to DLA Piper’s regional £84,000 (~$113,700). Pinsent Masons lists Manchester qualification pay at £69,000 as of August 2026; Eversheds Sutherland lifted other-UK NQ to £80,000 on 30–31 July 2026. USD cells convert those GBP bases at the Bank of England 10 September 2026 spot. Associate bands above NQ were not published on the primary pages and are omitted.
What do national firms pay a Manchester trainee solicitor in 2026?
Pinsent Masons lists Manchester trainee pay at £35,500 in year one and £38,500 in year two as of August 2026. CMS last published Manchester trainee cells of £33,000 / £35,000 in June 2025; Shoosmiths still lists regional trainees at £36,000 / £38,000 on its 2026 careers FAQs. Those first-year cells sit on or under the Skilled Worker new-entrant floor of £33,400, which is why at least one national firm will not sponsor Manchester trainees.
Do in-house general counsel in Manchester have to match law-firm NQ bases?
If the hire is an NQ coming off a DLA Piper or Eversheds Sutherland Manchester desk, yes — the 2026 regional cells are £84,000 and £80,000. Across 750 structured interviews, 71 of 126 general counsel, heads of legal and senior in-house counsel with a Greater Manchester or North West brief said they already price junior in-house offers against a named national-firm regional NQ cell. Public-body solicitors sit on local-government scales that were not accessed for 2026 and are not this table.
Why will some Manchester firms not sponsor trainee solicitors on Skilled Worker visas?
The Immigration Rules in force from 22 July 2025 set a standard Skilled Worker salary of £41,700, or 70 percent of the going rate with a £33,400 new-entrant floor. Pinsent Masons’ England training-contract page, as of August 2026, sponsors trainees in London only, not Manchester, Birmingham or Leeds, citing that general salary threshold. Its own Manchester first-year cell is £35,500.
How long does a Manchester associate search take, and what does counter-offer risk look like?
Sartori’s associate desk works Manchester files to a typical 6 to 12 week timeline, with a median 12 working days from offer to signature. Of 33 closed associate searches over three years, 14 were Manchester-sited NQ-to-5 PQE seats; counter-offer incidence on those 14 files sat at the program 35 percent (5 of 14). Completion on the 33 closed files is 93 percent.
Does the Employment Rights Act 2025 change what a Manchester company pays employment counsel?
From 1 January 2027 the unfair-dismissal qualifying period falls to six months and compensatory awards are uncapped. The Act received Royal Assent on 18 December 2025; day-one family leave, statutory sick pay and the Fair Work Agency are already live from 6–7 April 2026. That is an NQ-to-5 PQE employment-desk wave through 2027, not a one-off 2026 spike.
NQ tables, the SRA, the Law Society, GOV.UK and the combined authority.
Published NQ and trainee cells come from firm careers pages and from legal-press reports of named 2025–26 rounds. Statute and visa floors come from GOV.UK and Acas. Cluster size comes from Invest Manchester, JLL and Savills. Sartori figures come from the London associate program that covers this city.

NQ and trainee cells are firm-announced bases, not total cash and not PQE scales. USD converts GBP at the Bank of England 10 September 2026 spot (sterling 0.7391), not a payroll rate. The Law Society 13,700 figure is a North West stock, not a Manchester city census. Legal 500 and Chambers ranks measure directory standing, not vacancy volume. Invest Manchester FDI counts are EY project counts; FPBS jobs and GVA are cluster size, not solicitor wages. In-house cash bands, independent-firm NQ bases, NJC scales and ONS ASHE medians were not found and are not restated from secondary guides.
Interview counts, mandate telemetry, counter-offer incidence and the offer-to-acceptance window come from the continuous research program described on our research page. Nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles are mapped globally, and quarterly surveys have run since 2019.
