A nationally regarded life sciences patent team is seeking an associate with 1–4 years of experience to join its Intellectual Property group in Indianapolis. The role offers direct collaboration with sophisticated clients working at the frontier of pharmaceuticals, specialty chemicals, and ag-biotech technologies.

You will draft and prosecute U.S. and international patent applications covering small molecule pharmaceuticals, formulations, synthetic processes, and related life sciences innovations, and will engage closely with inventors and examiners throughout the process. Beyond core prosecution, the position involves meaningful strategic work: global portfolio development, patentability, freedom-to-operate, validity and non-infringement analyses, and IP due diligence for financings, licensing, and M&A transactions.

The ideal candidate brings an advanced degree in organic chemistry and wants to grow into a trusted client advisor, taking on increasing responsibility early with mentorship and support. You will work alongside in-house counsel, R&D scientists, and colleagues across IP, corporate, and litigation practices.

  • 1–4 years of patent preparation and prosecution experience, with substantial work in chemical, pharmaceutical, or life sciences technologies
  • J.D. from an accredited law school with strong academic credentials
  • Registration to practice before the USPTO
  • Advanced degree in organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, or a closely related field (Ph.D. strongly preferred; M.S. with substantial relevant experience considered)
  • Excellent writing, analytical, and communication skills, including the ability to explain complex chemistry clearly
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple deadlines while producing high-quality work
  • Preferred: experience with patentability, freedom-to-operate, clearance, non-infringement, or invalidity analyses or opinions
  • Preferred: patent due diligence, portfolio management, foreign prosecution (including EPO practice), or familiarity with Hatch-Waxman/Orange Book frameworks
