Lawyer salary Dublin 2026: when the NQ print is the bid.
A general counsel writing a Dublin offer, and a solicitor reading one, can both see a newly qualified figure: €76,000 at Matheson, €75,000 at Arthur Cox and A&L Goodbody, inside a regulator band of €65,000 to €80,000. That print is the right bid only when the seat is newly qualified at that firm. A State scale, a mid-level associate, and an in-house counsel are different products.
The 2026 Dublin number is a bid, not a lockstep.
Lawyer salary Dublin in 2026 is three published products sitting on one skyline. The newly qualified print, the State scale, and the in-house mean do not buy the same seat.
Legal Cheek’s Ireland profile for Matheson states €76,000 newly qualified, $88,099 at the ECB reference of 1.1592 on 11 September 2026. Arthur Cox and A&L Goodbody state €75,000. The print is a newly qualified cell. Right bid only for that NQ seat.
The euros and the dollars sit in the table under this. How those prints were dated is next.

Three firms state an NQ euro. The statutory floor does not.
The careers pages and the 2026 profiles are not the same document. One prints a phrase. The other prints €76,000, €75,000, and the trainee steps under them.
Legal Cheek’s 2026 Ireland profile for Matheson states first-year trainee pay of €46,000 ($53,323), second-year trainee pay of €48,000 ($55,642), and newly qualified pay of €76,000 ($88,099). Arthur Cox’s profile states the same trainee steps and newly qualified pay of €75,000 ($86,940). A&L Goodbody’s profile states €42,000 in year one ($48,686), €46,000 in year two ($53,323), and €75,000 newly qualified, marked as a range. Dollars use the ECB reference of €1 = $1.1592 on 11 September 2026. The same rate turns the Law Society in-office floor of €26,488.40, in force from 1 January 2026, into $30,705, which is the conversion already used on the Ireland salary table.
The Legal Services Regulatory Authority’s Pathways report for 2025 records newly qualified pay at larger firms as €65,000 to €80,000 ($75,348 to $92,736). Matheson’s €76,000 and the two €75,000 prints sit inside that band. The bottom of the band is €11,000 under Matheson and €10,000 under Arthur Cox. A board paper that quotes “the Dublin NQ” as a single euro is choosing a point the regulator did not choose.
The firms’ own trainee pages do not carry those euros. A&L Goodbody’s rewards page and Matheson’s trainee page describe pay in words. The words are not converted into a band on this page. Where a 2026 profile states a euro, that euro is used. Where a careers page states a phrase, the phrase stays a phrase. Private pay for a solicitor three, four, five, or six years qualified is not on these profiles, and it is not filled in.
A first-year trainee at €46,000 already sits €4,479 ($5,192) above the State Solicitor PPC first point of €41,521 ($48,131) from 1 June 2026. A&L Goodbody’s €42,000 year-one figure sits €479 above that same point. The Chief State Solicitor’s Office, on the page updated 27 May 2026, pays a year-one trainee €34,650 ($40,166). Three public or profiled year-one numbers, three employers, no single Dublin trainee wage.

Law Society trainee salary sheet ↗A newly qualified print is the right bid only when the seat is newly qualified at that firm.
Use the NQ print when the employer is paying an NQ at that firm.
The product has three parts that have to travel together: the firm named on the profile, a newly qualified seat, and the euro that profile states. Drop one and the letter describes a different job.
NQ at that firmA different product
- Named-firm NQ The seat is newly qualified at Matheson, Arthur Cox, or A&L Goodbody, and the letter uses the euro on that firm’s 2026 profile.
- State scale The contract is a civil-service grade or a Chief State Solicitor’s Office traineeship. The dated cell is the scale or the careers page.
- Company payroll The employer is a bank, a lessor, a fund manager, or a technology group. The comparator is an in-house print, not a firm NQ.
A newly qualified print is the right bid only when the seat is newly qualified at that firm. Matheson at €76,000, Arthur Cox at €75,000, and A&L Goodbody at €75,000 are three statements about three NQ classes. They are not a citywide associate scale, and they are not interchangeable with each other when the letter names a different office. A firm that is not on those three profiles does not inherit €76,000 by sitting in Dublin.
The stock those classes join is concentrated in the city. The Law Society Snapshot, published 8 June 2026, counted 8,827 practicing solicitors in Dublin at 31 December 2025, 68 percent of 12,961 nationally, and 479 of 581 Professional Practice Course contracts in Dublin. That is where the trainees are. It is not a salary. Who those employers are, and which desks are funds, grid connection, or company commercial, is the subject of the Dublin market briefing.
Across 250 structured interviews with Dublin associates and counsel, over an 18-month window, 72 were in financial-services regulatory or funds work. 29 of them said the first number they named to a prospective employer was the firm’s newly qualified print, not their current base. The print is doing work it was not built for. It is the number people reach for when their own year-group cash is not on a public page.
Four Dublin seats, four bids, and one print that does not travel.
The €76,000 cell fails in predictable places: a civil-service grade, a lawyer who qualified years ago, and a company that is not a law firm.
The State Solicitor first point of €41,521 is €34,479 under Matheson’s NQ print and €33,479 under the €75,000 prints ($38,809). A company that “matches Dublin” by averaging those cells is averaging a civil-service grade and a law-firm NQ. The CSSO year-one trainee salary of €34,650, updated 27 May 2026, is a third product again: a public trainee, with course fees covered, not a private NQ and not the statutory floor of €26,488.40.
In-house cash sits further away. SalaryExpert, using the Economic Research Institute’s employer-survey model last updated 2 October 2026, puts mean legal-counsel pay in Dublin at €132,151 ($153,189 at this page’s rate). That model is not a count of practicing certificates. RTÉ’s Director of Legal Affairs salary for the year ended 31 December 2025 was €191,900 ($222,450), as RTÉ reported on 22 July 2026. The gap from Matheson’s NQ print to that salary column is €115,900. A general counsel comparing the two is comparing an NQ class with a legal-chief salary. The seat-count reading of the RTÉ figure, and the civil-service grades around it, is on the Dublin general counsel salary page.
Private-sector in-house solicitors still need a practicing certificate for legal services, reserved or not. The Law Society practice note of 16 December 2021 states that rule under the Solicitors (Amendment) Act 1994, section 56, and states the exception for full-time service of the State. Re-titling the lawyer does not remove the private-sector duty. The certificate is a gate on the in-house seat. It is not a reason to pay the firm NQ.
| Seat | Setting | Wage on-cost | Public comparator | Usual mistake |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NQ at Matheson, Arthur Cox, or A&L Goodbody | Training contract, then a practicing certificate | Wage plus employer PRSI of 11.40 percent from 1 October 2026 | That firm's 2026 profile, not the statutory floor | Using the NQ cell for a lawyer who is already four or more years qualified |
| State Solicitor or CSSO trainee | Civil-service contract; full-time State service is the PC exception | Same Class A PRSI once weekly pay clears €552 | Forsa scale from 1 June 2026, or the CSSO page | Matching €76,000 onto a published State point |
| Firm associate, 3 to 6 years qualified | Practicing certificate; the NQ class is a different product | PRSI on the actual base, not on the NQ print | Disclosed current cash. No public PQE ladder | Using an NQ print for a lawyer already four or more years qualified |
| In-house counsel or legal chief | Private-sector in-house solicitors hold a practicing certificate | Employer PRSI on the in-house base, not on €76,000 by default | ERI mean or the RTÉ salary column | Cloning a firm NQ letter onto a company payroll |
The general counsel is often matching a print the firm keeps.
The company that wants a newly qualified solicitor is bidding against a class the firm already trained, at a euro the 2026 profile may already state.
One million euro funds 13.16 Matheson NQ seats and 5.21 RTÉ Director of Legal Affairs salary seats. The difference is the job, not a negotiation trick. A board that funds “thirteen Dublin lawyers” out of that million has funded 13.16 newly qualified seats at one firm’s profiled print. It has not funded 13.16 counsel, and it has not funded 13.16 legal chiefs.
Of 20 closed Dublin associate searches over the trailing three years, 14 were seats a company was filling and 6 were seats a firm was filling. 4 of those 6 were funds or aviation-finance associates. The company side is the larger book. Those seats are not newly qualified classes at the three profiled firms.
Your exposure is a mis-specified product. Name the seat before you name €76,000.
- Name the seat first. Newly qualified at a named firm, State grade, mid-level associate, or in-house counsel. The euro follows the seat.
- Match the profiled NQ only. Matheson, Arthur Cox, and A&L Goodbody are three profiles. A fourth firm does not inherit their euro.
- Price the State scale apart. €41,521 from 1 June 2026 is a civil-service point. It is not a failed attempt at €76,000.
- Send mid-level and in-house elsewhere. Undisclosed PQE cash stays undisclosed. In-house means sit on the Dublin in-house table. The search desks are associate recruiting and in-house counsel recruiting.
Your offer is an NQ number only if the seat is an NQ seat at the firm whose profile you are reading.
- Read the profile and the contract. A Dublin address is not a Matheson NQ. Ask which document the euro came from.
- Separate year-one from newly qualified. €46,000 and €76,000 are both on the Matheson profile. They are not the same year.
- Check the certificate first. Private in-house practice needs a practicing certificate. Full-time State service is the exception written into the practice note.
- Keep the country table separate. The statutory floor, the CSSO trainee steps, and the qualifier class still in training are on the Ireland salary page.
Employer PRSI is part of the cash cost. It is not a rounding error on the offer letter.
PRSI, a tax slice, and a counter-offer the NQ print does not see.
The euro on the profile is not the euro the company pays, and it is not the euro a mid-level associate is already earning.
Employer PRSI is part of the cash cost. It is not a rounding error on the offer letter. From 1 October 2026, Class A employer PRSI is 11.40 percent where weekly pay exceeds €552, and employee PRSI is 4.35 percent, on the Department of Social Protection table. On €76,000 that is €8,664 from the employer and €3,306 from the employee. Weekly pay on €76,000 is about €1,462, clear of the €552 threshold. The same test clears €46,000 and €41,521. It is not a reason to gross up the statutory trainee floor of €26,488.40, which does not clear that weekly line, and that floor is not given an 11.40 percent add-on here.
Income tax is a second cut, and only the upper slice is stated. Revenue’s 2026 chart taxes a single person’s first €44,000 at 20 percent and the balance at 40 percent, before credits. On a €76,000 salary the balance is €32,000 and the tax on that balance is €12,800 ($14,838). Credits can reduce the bill. They are not estimated here. KPMG Ireland, on 6 October 2026, states USC at 8 percent above €70,044 for 2026. The slice of €76,000 above that threshold is €5,956, and 8 percent of it is €476.48. Lower USC bands are not added in that sentence.
Counter-offers on the Dublin associate line run at 37 percent. The median from offer to acceptance is 12 working days. That window is long enough for a candidate to put a profiled NQ euro next to a current base the company has not seen. It is short enough that a letter still written as if €76,000 were the whole package will miss the people who already earn more than an NQ.
A head of legal at a European bank’s Dublin branch told us, “The newly qualified print priced the trainee class. It did not price a five-year counsel.” The sentence matches the table. €76,000 is a trainee-class exit figure on one profile. A five-year counsel is a different row, and that row is not public.
Twenty closed searches, and the letters that used the wrong euro.
The misses that cost weeks were briefs that treated one newly qualified print as every Dublin job.
Of those 20 files, the 14 company-side seats and the 6 firm-side seats are the split. Completion on the 20 is 93 percent, on a typical 6 to 12 weeks. 3 of the 14 company-side files were re-briefed because the first letter used a newly qualified print for a lawyer already four or more years qualified. Those three still closed. They are the finding that cuts against a tidy story: the delay was the euro on the letter, not an empty market.
Two composites from that book, by category only. An international funds office in Dublin hired a three-year funds associate and used that firm’s own NQ print as a floor plus a disclosed step above it. The search closed in 8 weeks, inside the typical band. A European bank’s Dublin branch, hiring a five-year counsel, opened on a cloned €76,000 letter, withdrew it, and closed on a second letter in 11 weeks. The first letter would not have.
Sartori has worked this associate line for 5 years. Quarterly surveys of the wider market have run since 2019. Coverage of Dublin on the associate file is about 3,000 lawyers. That map records employer and admission. It does not record the contract cash. Every package we price comes from the offer, checked with the hiring company, not from the map.
- Q1 Is the seat newly qualified at Matheson, Arthur Cox, or A&L Goodbody? If it is a different firm, a State office, or a company, do not open on €76,000.
- Q2 If it is that NQ seat, which profile’s euro are you using, €76,000 or €75,000? If you cannot name the profile, you are using the band as a point. Pick the document.
- Q3 Have you added employer PRSI at 11.40 percent, and is the lawyer actually an NQ? If the lawyer is four or more years qualified, ask for current cash. The profile will not supply it.
- → All three answered, and the seat is that firm’s NQ? Then bid the profiled euro, keep the PRSI, and do not average it with the State scale.
Google Ads Keyword Planner, measured 11 September 2026, recorded 40 monthly searches for lawyer salary Dublin. That is why this URL exists. It is not a 40-person market, and it is not a reason to smooth three profiles into one city wage. Sartori maps 1,480,000+ lawyers. The company that needs the seat filled starts at a confidential hiring conversation. The lawyer weighing a letter starts from the profile, the scale, or the in-house mean, not from a single Dublin number.
Lawyer salary in Dublin 2026: questions from both sides of the offer
What is lawyer salary Dublin in 2026?
The dated public band is €65,000 to €80,000 for newly qualified solicitors at larger firms, in the Legal Services Regulatory Authority’s Pathways report for 2025. Legal Cheek’s 2026 Ireland profiles put Matheson at €76,000 ($88,099), and Arthur Cox and A&L Goodbody at €75,000 ($86,940). Dollars use the ECB euro reference of 1.1592 on 11 September 2026. Those figures are newly qualified prints. They are not a 3-to-6-year scale, and they are not an in-house mean.
How many Dublin NQ seats does €1 million fund?
One million euro funds 13.16 seats at Matheson’s €76,000 newly qualified print, 13.33 at €75,000, 15.38 at the bottom of the €65,000 band, and 12.50 at €80,000. The same million funds 24.08 seats at the State Solicitor first point of €41,521 from 1 June 2026, and 5.21 seats at the RTÉ Director of Legal Affairs salary of €191,900. Arithmetic is €1,000,000 divided by the printed euro. It is not a statement that those seats are the same job.
Is a Dublin trainee already paid more than a new State Solicitor?
On the published cells, yes at the first point. Matheson and Arthur Cox state first-year trainee pay of €46,000 on their 2026 profiles, which is €4,479 above the State Solicitor PPC first point of €41,521 from 1 June 2026. A&L Goodbody’s first-year trainee figure on the same series is €42,000, still €479 above that State point. The statutory in-office floor from 1 January 2026 is €26,488.40. The State scale and the large-firm trainee print are different products that happen to sit near each other in year one.
What does employer PRSI add to a €76,000 Dublin NQ?
Employer PRSI of 11.40 percent from 1 October 2026 adds €8,664 ($10,043) to a €76,000 salary. The Department of Social Protection sets that Class A rate, and an employee rate of 4.35 percent, where weekly pay exceeds €552. Employee PRSI on €76,000 is €3,306. A €75,000 print carries €8,550 of employer PRSI. The rate is the one in force from 1 October 2026. It is not a figure to omit from the board pack.
Should a company match lawyer salary Dublin with the NQ print for a mid-level hire?
No. The €76,000 and €75,000 cells are newly qualified prints. Of 20 closed Dublin associate searches over three years, 3 of the 14 company-side files had to be rewritten because the first letter used an NQ print for a lawyer already four or more years qualified. Sartori’s Dublin associate line typically runs 6 to 12 weeks, with 12 working days from offer to acceptance and a 37 percent counter-offer rate. A head of legal who needs the in-house mean should read the Dublin in-house salary page, not this NQ cell.
Do the firms publish these euros on their own careers pages?
The 2026 Legal Cheek profiles do. The trainee rewards pages checked for this table still use a phrase rather than a euro cell. A&L Goodbody’s profile states €75,000 and marks it as a range; the endpoints are not printed because the profile does not give them. Private 3-to-6-year associate cash is not on these profiles. Treat a mid-level number that arrives without a date and a document as undisclosed.
Profiles, the regulator band, the State scale, and the on-cost.
NQ euros come from 2026 Legal Cheek Ireland profiles and from the LSRA Pathways report for 2025. The trainee floor, the CSSO page, and the 1 June 2026 State scale are public instruments. PRSI and income tax are the 2026 rates. In-house anchors are the ERI model and the RTÉ salary column.
