Lawyer salary in Spain 2026: Madrid versus London.
The euro figure a Madrid company actually matches is the Spanish elite employed table. London Magic Circle newly-qualified cash is counsel money here, not junior money.
Madrid's euro table is not London's lockstep.
A general counsel in Madrid searching for lawyer salary Spain is usually holding two numbers that do not belong on the same line: a Spanish elite junior near EUR 46,000, and a London newly-qualified base that converts to about EUR 174,800. Across 250 structured interviews with Madrid associates and in-house counsel, 94 of 142 respondents sitting inside Spanish-elite and Magic Circle Madrid employed seats over a 24-month window told Sartori their last offer was priced against a Spanish euro lockstep, not against a London conversion.
El Confidencial, on 28 July 2026, put Garrigues junior men at EUR 46,009. At the ECB rate of 0.85815 pounds per euro on 11 September 2026, the London Magic Circle newly-qualified base of £150,000 is EUR 174,795. Same title. Different payroll.
The table a Madrid company matches is the 2025 employed euro print. London is a neighboring-geo ceiling, not a Madrid junior scale. The conversion is unpacked below.

The 2025 lawyer salary Spain table a company actually matches.
The dated print is the 2025 employed lockstep inside five national-elite sustainability reports, compiled by El Confidencial on 28 July 2026. Partners sit outside that laboral table. London sits outside it too.
A Madrid general counsel who opens a 2026 associate or counsel requisition is not shopping a national average. The Instituto Nacional de Estadística’s Encuesta Anual de Estructura Salarial for 2024, published 28 May 2026, put mean annual earnings in the Comunidad de Madrid at EUR 34,410.01 and the professional, scientific and technical section (CNAE M, which includes law firms) at EUR 35,165.11. Those are employee-cash prints for a whole economy slice. They are not a commercial-associate scale.
The scale a company actually matches sits in the employer reports. El Confidencial, on 28 July 2026, reading the 2025 sustainability reports of Garrigues, Uría Menéndez, Cuatrecasas, Pérez-Llorca and Gómez-Acebo & Pombo, put combined 2025 revenue up about 5.68 percent to more than EUR 1,570 million, and mean employed salary up 2.84 percent for men, 2.11 percent for women and 2.49 percent overall. Under-30 cash was almost frozen near EUR 44,900. In the two firms that split that rung by sex, 2025 junior women averaged EUR 43,376 against men at EUR 43,137.
Garrigues is the Madrid-representative print. The 2025 report, as read by that 28 July 2026 article, put juniors at EUR 45,883 for women and EUR 46,009 for men; associates at EUR 60,324 / EUR 61,120 (a mix effect from more junior people in the band, not a posted cut); senior associates at EUR 99,710 / EUR 98,205; principal associates at EUR 144,999 / EUR 145,409; and counsel at EUR 158,729 / EUR 175,223. Cinco Días, on 30 July 2025, citing the 2024 report, had already recorded that Garrigues uses Madrid figures as the most representative operating location, with 2024 junior men at EUR 45,600.
Cuatrecasas published the 2025 table in its own PDF. Spain employed lawyers on a relación laboral: junior women EUR 40,868, junior men EUR 40,264; the blended “abogados” cell EUR 72,449 for women and EUR 73,479 for men; senior lawyers EUR 128,179 / EUR 130,234; of counsel EUR 193,115 / EUR 208,366. Headcount at year-end 2025, per Cinco Días on 25 March 2026, was 1,985 professionals, about 70 percent lawyers. World revenue was EUR 447.1 million; Spain EUR 347.68 million.
The fee line that sits above those employed cells is not a mystery. Expansión, on 26 February 2026, put Garrigues world revenue at EUR 527.69 million, up 9.51 percent, with Spain at EUR 437.15 million and a 2025 practice mix of Corporate/M&A 32.59 percent, tax 29.31 percent, disputes 12.60 percent, employment 12.16 percent and administrative/constitutional 7.78 percent. That mix is what a Madrid general counsel is actually instructing, and it is why the associate cell the company matches is an M&A, tax or disputes lawyer rather than a generic “junior.” The prior-year companion print, El Confidencial on 2 September 2025, had already put 2024 under-30 means at EUR 45,793.02 for men and EUR 44,932.24 for women across the five — the freeze in 2025 is a freeze from a number that had already stopped moving.
| Firm | Junior / under-30 | Associate band | Counsel / alta dirección | 2025 Spain revenue |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Garrigues | EUR 46,009junior men, 2025 | EUR 61,120associate men; mix effect | EUR 175,223counsel men | EUR 437.15m |
| Cuatrecasas | EUR 40,868junior women, 2025 PDF | EUR 73,479abogados men, blended | EUR 208,366of counsel men | EUR 347.68m |
| Uría Menéndez | EUR 47,254under 30, 2025 | EUR 72,994age 30–49 | Outside laboral tablepartners excluded | EUR 243.64m |
| Pérez-Llorca | EUR 59,40618–30; includes hubs | EUR 87,613associates men | EUR 245,934alta dirección men | EUR 155.8m |
| Gómez-Acebo & Pombo | EUR 43,475otros profesionales, men | EUR 85,866asociado senior men | EUR 167,748of counsel men | EUR 105.9m world |
Uría Menéndez, in the same 28 July 2026 compilation, put lawyers’ means at EUR 77,941 for men and EUR 67,343 for women; under 30 at EUR 47,254; age 30–49 at EUR 72,994; and 50+ at EUR 56,935, which sits below the middle band because partners are outside the laboral table. Spain revenue in 2025 was EUR 243.64 million, up 5.5 percent, per Expansión on 20 April 2026.
Gómez-Acebo & Pombo’s 2025 report, Spain and Portugal laboral, put socio profesional (employed, not equity) men at EUR 348,104.28; of counsel men at EUR 167,748.20; and asociado senior / abogado senior men at EUR 85,866.34. Variable pay starts in year 3. World revenue was EUR 105.9 million, up 5.8 percent.
Categories are not comparable across firms. A Cuatrecasas “abogados” cell blends associates, principal associates and knowledge lawyers. A Garrigues “associate” cell is a different cut. The usable fact for a company is the shape: junior cash in the low-to-mid EUR 40,000s at the Spain-origin elite, associate cash in the EUR 60,000s to EUR 80,000s, counsel cash in the EUR 170,000s to EUR 240,000s. That is the table. It is not London.
A Madrid company that posts London newly-qualified cash is posting Spanish counsel money.
Two employed books, one reserved title, three payers.
The commercial figure sits on two private payrolls that share a credential gate and split on the employment contract. A third book, the public legal corps, buys the same law-graduate pool on a different exam and is not the table against London.
Real Decreto 135/2021, the Estatuto General de la Abogacía Española, reserves the title. Article 4 attaches abogado and abogada only to practicing members who advise, resolve disputes and defend others’ rights. Articles 37 to 39 then split the contract: the profession may be exercised as an employee under the special firm relationship, or under the ordinary in-house contract. Real Decreto 1331/2006 is the special regime for lawyers who work for pay, for another’s account, under a law-office holder. Estatuto article 39 is ordinary employment, by written contract, which must respect independence and professional secrecy. ICAM’s in-house section, reading the new Estatuto in 2021, treated in-house lawyers who use the reserved function as required to sit on the practicing roll.
The gate into both private books is Ley 34/2006: a law degree, the enabling master, and the Ministry aptitude test, which has no cap on places. Orden PJC/298/2026 convened the 2026 first-semester sitting as an online, simultaneous test; apto is a 70 percent test / 30 percent master weighted mean, at least 5 out of 10. The second 2025 sitting, on 13 November 2025, put 1,431 candidates in the room of 1,597 admitted, per the Consejo General de la Abogacía Española notice republished that week. El Confidencial, on 23 June 2026, attributing figures to Justicia, restated that 9 of 10 online sitters passed in 2025. There is no official split of those aptos into elite-firm, in-house and solo seats.
The perimeter is a bar census, not a commercial headcount. El Periódico, on 8 March 2026, reporting the CGAE release, put the December 2025 census at 154,417 practicing members and 84,604 non-practicing across 83 colleges. ICAM’s 2025 memoria counted 44,883 practicing members in Madrid against a total census of 73,960; the living roll at 22 April 2026 was 73,783 colegiados. ICAB, at 31 December 2025, counted 17,737 practicing members in Barcelona. Madrid practicing members are about 2.5 times Barcelona’s. Most of that roll is not the commercial table against London. Solo and small-firm offices on the convenio floor remain the statistical majority. Turno de oficio is a public-aid book: CGAE counted 39,941 professionals on it in the December 2025 print.
Special employmentPublic function
- The firm book Employed lawyers inside Madrid partnerships — Spanish elite headquarters and international offices that bill in euros. The special employment relationship of RD 1331/2006. This is the lockstep a company matches.
- The in-house book Abogados de empresa on ordinary employment contracts at listed groups, banks, energy operators, PE-backed platforms and Spanish subsidiaries of multinationals. Estatuto article 39. Same reserved title, different payer.
- The public book Cuerpo de Abogados del Estado and other Group A legal corps. A parallel exam, a statutory exemption from the private-practice title, and a competing buyer of the same graduate pool. Not the commercial euro table.
The public book is worth naming because it feeds the listed-company seat. A resolution of 23 December 2025 (BOE 27 December 2025) opened 30 free-access places in the Cuerpo de Abogados del Estado, with the first exercise scheduled for September 2026 at Calle Ayala 5 in Madrid. El País, on 3 December 2024, reporting Esade’s study of IBEX board secretariats as of May 2024, found that every IBEX 35 company has a secretario del consejo, 20 also have a vicesecretario, and only two still keep a separate letrado asesor. Of 55 secretariat members, 19 were Abogados del Estado on excedencia and 23 dual-hatted the secretariat and leadership of the company’s legal function. Esade’s survey put a team behind 84 percent of secretaries, five members on average. Mean tenure was about 9 years. The profile is legal in 96 percent of cases. That is the listed-company general counsel and board-secretary seat a Madrid company staffs — often the same person — and it is not a Magic Circle cell. The functions those companies have added, in the same study, are the CNMV relationship, legal website disclosure, resourcing board committees, and ESG tracking. A chief legal officer hiring the next lawyer into that office is not filling a Magic Circle junior seat. They are filling a dual-hat that already reports to the board chair and the chief executive.
ICAM section rolls are a demand proxy, not a wage. Lawyerpress, on 21 April 2026, printing figures at 31 March 2026, put distinct section members at 15,059. The Abogados de Empresa section counted 3,649 members, an absolute gain of 338. Protección de Datos y Big Data grew 39.7 percent. MASC grew 32.3 percent. A Madrid lawyer can sit in several sections. The 3,649 figure is not a national in-house census.
The payer is a Madrid lockstep, or a company matching that lockstep.
Of the same Madrid interview cohort, 76 sat inside corporate legal departments at listed groups, banks, energy operators and multinational Iberia clusters over a 24-month window. Fifty-one of those 76 said their last hire was benchmarked to a Madrid elite-firm associate rung.
Who pays the Spanish figure is not London HR. The national-elite headquarters sit in Madrid: Garrigues at Plaza de Colón 2, with over 400 professionals in that office; Cuatrecasas at Almagro 9, with over 300 lawyers; Pérez-Llorca on two Castellana towers. Magic Circle and other internationals in Madrid are separate Spanish entities. Clifford Chance, S.L.P. sits at Paseo de la Castellana 110. A&O Shearman’s Spain careers page, accessed in September 2026, puts Madrid at Serrano 73 with 18 partners, over 110 lawyers and more than 60 business-team employees, combination dated May 2024. Baker McKenzie Spain states more than 220 lawyers, Madrid at Edificio Beatriz. Freshfields Spain is at Torre Europa. Expansion’s 2025 Spain ranking is the euro-payer evidence: Clifford Chance and Linklaters above EUR 80 million, A&O Shearman at EUR 73 million, Baker McKenzie Spain at EUR 116 million.
The company-side payer is the legal department that has to put a lawyer on its own payroll. Legal 500’s Spain 2026 GC Powerlist, used here only as an employer-type map with personal names stripped, places those seats at IBEX banks, energy and utilities, telecom and technology groups, infrastructure and construction concessionaires, insurers and industrials, listed retail, hotels and pharma, and Spanish subsidiaries of multinationals. Dual hats on that page are the rule more than the exception: general counsel and board secretary; legal and compliance; legal and public affairs; legal and data-protection officer. ICAM and ICAB’s III Encuentro Abogacía de Empresa, announced 8 September 2026 for 22–23 October 2026 in Madrid, named the in-house agenda as LegalTech, artificial intelligence inside legal departments, corporate governance and sustainability, and strategic management of external providers. That is college framing, not a headcount.
The work those departments instruct, and that the Madrid firm desks staff, is visible in the 2025 deal log and the 2025 regulator tape. TTR Data’s 2025 annual, published 15 January 2026, counted 3,336 announced-or-closed Spanish deals and EUR 103,085 million of value, down 8 percent on count and up 19 percent on value versus 2024. Private equity did 430 deals and EUR 33,676 million. Garrigues led the legal-adviser table by count at 184 deals; Uría Menéndez led by value at EUR 25,958 million. Year to August 2026, the same source counted 1,938 deals and EUR 63,787 million, down 17 percent on count and 9 percent on value versus the same period of 2025. The CNMC’s 2025 memoria recorded 123 concentrations notified, up 38.5 percent, with 71 percent short-form, a median resolution of 9 days and the first prohibition of the recent series (Curium / IRAB). The CNMV’s 2025 annual summary put regulated-market capitalization at EUR 1.091 trillion, up 42.2 percent, with 3 listings and equity follow-ons of EUR 11,595 million, up 46.2 percent. DataInvex put 2025 productive foreign investment at EUR 30,764 million, of which the Comunidad de Madrid took EUR 15,970 million — 51.9 percent. Immediate origin: Luxembourg EUR 8,561 million, the United States EUR 6,402 million, the United Kingdom EUR 2,322 million. None of those figures is a wage. They are why the commercial desks exist, and why a general counsel in energy, banking or infrastructure is matching a Madrid M&A, competition or projects associate rather than a London newly-qualified conversion.
Expansión, on 20 April 2026, split the Spain-market fee pot: Spain-origin firms EUR 2,760 million, up 10.2 percent, against a combined market of EUR 4,500 million. Cinco Días, on 29 April 2026, put the top 20 business-focused firms in Spain at EUR 2,197 million, up 5.8 percent, against 2025 inflation of 2.7 percent. The employed junior freeze near EUR 44,900 sits under that fee growth. A company that treats 2025 firm revenue as a reason to post London newly-qualified cash has read the wrong column of the same year.
Junior cashCounsel cash
- Match the junior rung A first in-house counsel seat at a Spanish subsidiary, or a junior hire into a national-elite lockstep. The 2025 print sits in the low-to-mid EUR 40,000s at Spain-origin elite. This is the cell London HR most often overprints.
- Match the associate rung The seat most Madrid companies actually fill: three to six years, a live M&A, financing, disputes or employment file, ordinary or special employment. The 2025 print sits in the EUR 60,000s to EUR 80,000s depending on the firm cell.
- Match the counsel rung Head of legal, legal director, dual-hatted board secretary. The 2025 employed counsel print starts near EUR 175,000 at Garrigues men and runs through alta dirección cells above EUR 240,000. That is also where a London newly-qualified conversion accidentally lands.
Convert the City number and you have hired a counsel, not a junior.
London is named here as the neighboring geo a Madrid company is measured against. The UK market is not explained. The arithmetic is.
Clifford Chance moved London newly-qualified base to £150,000, a £25,000 rise, backdated 1 May 2024, as The Lawyer reported on 29 May 2024; trainees moved from 1 September 2024 to £56,000 in year 1 and £61,000 in year 2. Slaughter and May matched the newly-qualified figure from 1 September 2024, as The Lawyer reported on 4 September 2024, joining Freshfields, Linklaters, Clifford Chance and A&O Shearman. The Lawyer’s UK compilation page last fully updated on 4 December 2025. No 2025–2026 Magic Circle newly-qualified hike replaced that move. Quinn Emanuel’s London newly-qualified base, reported by The Lawyer on 5 June 2026, sat at £189,000 — a US-firm London ceiling, not a Madrid cell.
The European Central Bank euro reference on 11 September 2026 was USD 1.1592 per euro and 0.85815 pounds per euro. Arithmetic only: £150,000 = EUR 174,795; £189,000 = EUR 220,242; £56,000 = EUR 65,257; £61,000 = EUR 71,083. In dollars, Garrigues junior men at EUR 46,009 is USD 53,334; Cuatrecasas junior women at EUR 40,868 is USD 47,374; Garrigues associate men at EUR 61,120 is USD 70,850; Garrigues counsel men at EUR 175,223 is USD 203,118; the London newly-qualified conversion at EUR 174,795 is USD 202,622. A Madrid company that posts London Magic Circle newly-qualified cash is posting counsel-level Spanish elite cash, not junior or associate cash. A company that posts EUR 40,000 to EUR 46,000 is posting the 2025 Spanish elite junior mean, about 3.8 times below London newly-qualified at Garrigues and about 4.3 times below at Cuatrecasas.
Magic Circle Madrid offices are a different payroll from London. They pay in euros on the Spanish table, not the £150,000 London lockstep. No 2026 Clifford Chance Madrid euro newly-qualified figure exists; this page omits any invented Madrid Magic Circle band. A head of legal at a Spanish subsidiary of a UK-listed financial group told Sartori their London HR template arrived with the £150,000 newly-qualified figure already converted, and that they spent six weeks walking group compensation off that number before a Madrid associate brief could be written at all.
SMI 2026 annual comparison floor
Real Decreto 126/2026, in force 20 February 2026, effects 1 January to 31 December 2026. A floor, not an associate band.
BOE-A-2026-3815 ↗London templateMadrid euro table
- Group compensation sends sterling A UK or US headquarters pastes the newly-qualified lockstep into a Madrid requisition and converts it. The number looks like a junior offer. In Madrid it is counsel cash.
- The local table does not move Spanish elite under-30 cash froze near EUR 44,900 in 2025 while five-firm fees rose 5.68 percent. The junior rung is not waiting for London. It is waiting for the next Spanish EINF.
- The shortlist reads the wrong rung Candidates who can do the work treat EUR 175,000 as a counsel seat. Candidates who cannot, treat it as a windfall. Either way the company has not briefed the seat it thinks it opened.
Magic Circle Madrid is a euro payroll. It is not the City lockstep with a Spanish postcode.
Four other prints get used as if they were this table.
A statutory floor, a convenio cell, an occupation mean two surveys behind, and a hub-blended age band are all real. None of them is the 2026 commercial-associate figure a Madrid company matches.
Real Decreto 126/2026, published in the Boletín Oficial del Estado on 19 February 2026, set the 2026 salario mínimo interprofesional at EUR 40.70 a day or EUR 1,221 a month, with an annual comparison floor of EUR 17,094, up 3.1 percent versus RD 87/2025. That is the statutory floor a Madrid law-firm contract cannot undercut. It is not an associate band.
The Madrid Convenio de Oficinas y Despachos is the legal minimum for a titulado in a Madrid office, including law firms. BOCM number 102, 1 May 2026, registering the 20 March 2026 paritaria revision, put Grupo I nivel 1 at EUR 1,559.05 a month, EUR 21,826.70 annual over 14 pays. The 2025–2026 convenio had already set a 2.7 percent 2026 rise and an SMI override for the bottom cell. A Garrigues junior at about EUR 46,000 is more than twice Grupo I.1. The convenio remains the floor for the statistical majority of the Colegio roll. It is not the commercial table against London.
INE’s closest occupation cut is CNO-11 group 25, “Profesionales en derecho,” and it is 2022. Table 36840 put mean gross at EUR 44,805.21; the median at EUR 38,640; the 90th percentile at EUR 69,807.41. The group includes judges, prosecutors, notaries and registrars. Occupation-level CNO 25 is not printed in the 2024 EAES HTML or PDF. Writing the 2022 mean as a 2026 commercial-associate wage would be a category error, and this page does not make it.
El Confidencial’s 14 July 2026 questionnaire of the revenue top 25 is a respondent share, not a lockstep. More than half of those respondents paid first-year lawyers above EUR 40,000, about ten points above the share two years earlier. The share paying above EUR 50,000 rose from 3.57 percent in 2024 to 11.11 percent in 2025, all of them international firms. The share paying under EUR 30,000 fell from 25 percent to 18.5 percent. HR respondents scored pressure to revise scales at 3.37 out of 5. Useful as a direction-of-travel item. Not a named-firm table, and not an in-house band.
Price the Madrid rung first. Then open the search.
Of 20 closed Madrid associate searches over three years, 12 were Spanish-elite or Magic Circle Madrid euro-payroll seats and 8 were in-house at listed groups and multinational subsidiaries. Five of those 20 files required a mid-process re-price because the original brief used a London newly-qualified conversion as the Madrid associate band.
Sartori & Partners has worked the Madrid associate book for five years, for companies putting a lawyer on the payroll and for firms staffing the euro table those companies match. Quarterly surveys have run since 2019; the global research program maps nearly 1.5 million lawyer profiles. The Madrid desk closed 20 associate searches over the trailing three years at a 92 percent completion rate, on a typical timeline of 6 to 12 weeks. Median offer-to-acceptance is 9 working days. Counter-offer incidence is 35 percent — 7 of the 20 closed files. Four of the 20 ran past 12 weeks, and those four sat inside the five that had to be re-priced.
A general counsel at an IBEX energy group told us they had budgeted EUR 175,000 for what the requisition called a senior counsel seat, treating the number as London-comparable junior cash. The shortlist read it as Spanish elite counsel money, which is what Garrigues counsel men actually earned in 2025. The file closed in week 10, after the brief was rewritten onto an associate cell near the Garrigues 2025 associate print of EUR 61,120. That is one of the 20. It is also one of the five re-prices. The uncomfortable read is that the method did not prevent the wrong number leaving the building; it caught the number after the first shortlist had already reacted to it.
A second file, one of the eight in-house seats, sat at a Spanish subsidiary of a UK-listed financial group. London HR had converted the £150,000 newly-qualified figure before the Madrid head of legal saw the requisition. The company wanted a three-to-five-year commercial lawyer to own financing documents and the local panel. Once the brief was pulled back onto the Madrid associate rung, the search behaved like the rest of the book: a 6-to-12-week clock, a counter-offer on the table, a nine-day signature. The delay was the conversion, not the candidate pool.
What the file still cannot see is worth stating once, as a limit rather than as a virtue. Sartori’s quarterly survey since 2019 tracks offer-to-acceptance windows and counter-offer incidence on closed mandates. It does not produce an in-house PQE table for Spain, because the underlying public documents do not. A head of talent at a listed Spanish retailer told us they had stopped asking search firms for “the in-house number” and started asking what the last three Madrid elite-firm associates in the same practice had actually been paid. That is the matching rule this page is willing to stand on. It is also why five of 20 closed files began on the wrong rung: group compensation still arrives with a sterling lockstep, and the local legal function still has to talk it down.
| Seat | Who earns it | Who pays it | 2025 cash print | Instrument |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Junior / under-30 employed lawyer | National-elite and Magic Circle Madrid associate books | The firm lockstep in euros | EUR 40,000–46,000 (2025 EINF) | Special employment, RD 1331/2006 |
| Mid-level associate | The same employed book, years 3–6 | The firm; variable pay often starts in year 3 | EUR 60,000–87,000 depending on firm | Special employment |
| Counsel / alta dirección employed cash | Counsel and of-counsel on the laboral table | The firm; partners sit outside this table | EUR 175,000–246,000 | Special employment; not equity |
| In-house abogado de empresa | Listed groups, banks, energy, multinational Iberia clusters | The company, matching Madrid firm rungs | No public 2026 PQE table | Ordinary employment, Estatuto art. 39 |
| London Magic Circle NQ (contrast only) | A London qualifier, not a Madrid junior | The London lockstep in sterling | £150,000 = EUR 174,800 | UK firm announcement, 2024, still standing |
Your exposure is a wrong rung, not an empty shortlist. Sartori’s Madrid associate desk closed 20 mandates in three years at 92 percent; the slow ones were the files that began on a London conversion.
- Write the euro cell first. Pick junior, associate or counsel against the 2025 employed table before anyone in group compensation pastes a sterling lockstep into the requisition.
- Treat Magic Circle Madrid as a euro payer. Expansion’s 2025 Spain ranking is the evidence those entities bill in euros. Do not assume the London newly-qualified figure travels with the brand.
- Budget the counter-offer. Incidence on this book is 35 percent. Madrid elite firms defend the employed lockstep because the next junior class is already priced off it.
- Do not wait for an in-house PQE table. None was accessed for 2026. Benchmark the company seat to the elite-firm associate rung your last hire actually matched, which is what 51 of 76 in-house respondents in the cohort described.
- Hold the nine-day window. Median offer-to-acceptance is 9 working days. A committee that needs three weeks after verbal agreement is the delay, not the market.
Your 2025 print is a Spanish euro cell. A London newly-qualified conversion is not a raise you are being denied; it is a different payroll in a neighboring geo.
- Read the laboral table, not the partnership. Partners sit outside the employed reports. A 50+ mean that sits below a 30–49 mean is an accounting artifact, not a pay cut.
- Know which contract you are on. Special employment inside a firm is RD 1331/2006. In-house is ordinary employment under Estatuto article 39. The reserved title is the same; the payer is not.
- Do not brief yourself on a hub blend. An 18–30 mean that includes London and New York is not your Madrid junior cell.
- Price the in-house move against the associate rung you are leaving. Companies in the cohort match that rung. They do not match converted London newly-qualified cash, and a candidate who arrives with that number stalls the process.
- Watch the nine-day clock the other way. When a Madrid offer is real, it moves. A process that cannot sign inside two weeks is usually still arguing about the rung.
The hiring-calendar view of the same city — who is still filling seats this year, and why an in-house requisition slips — sits on our Madrid legal market page for 2026. Company payroll for a Madrid in-house counsel seat, distinct from the firm lockstep above, is on the in-house counsel salary in Madrid for 2026. The neighboring-geo pay table, named here only for contrast, sits on lawyer salary in the UK 2026. Companies building a legal function from nothing rather than matching a Madrid associate rung should start with the first general counsel guide. In-house mandates in energy, banking and infrastructure in this city run through the Madrid in-house counsel desk.
Common questions about lawyer pay in Spain in 2026
What is the lawyer salary Spain figure a Madrid company matches in 2026?
Spanish elite juniors sat at about EUR 40,000 to EUR 46,000 in 2025 employer reports, not London newly-qualified cash. El Confidencial, on 28 July 2026, reading the five national-elite sustainability reports, put Garrigues junior men at EUR 46,009 and Cuatrecasas junior women at EUR 40,868, with the under-30 elite mean frozen near EUR 44,900. Who earns that figure is the employed associate book at those firms and at Magic Circle Madrid seats that bill in euros. Who pays it is the lockstep of those firms, plus the corporate legal department that has to match Madrid rather than the City.
How does Madrid junior pay compare with London Magic Circle newly-qualified base?
London Magic Circle newly-qualified base of £150,000 converts to about EUR 174,800 — roughly 3.8 times a Garrigues junior. Clifford Chance moved to that sterling figure backdated 1 May 2024, and Slaughter and May matched from 1 September 2024, as The Lawyer reported; the UK compilation page last fully updated on 4 December 2025 still stands on that move. At the ECB rate of 0.85815 pounds per euro on 11 September 2026, £150,000 is EUR 174,795, which is the same euro cash as Garrigues counsel men at EUR 175,223.
Do Magic Circle offices in Madrid pay the London lockstep?
Expansion, on 20 April 2026, placed Clifford Chance and Linklaters Spain revenue above EUR 80 million; those Madrid entities pay euros, not the London lockstep. A&O Shearman Spain sat at EUR 73 million on the same ranking. No 2026 Clifford Chance Madrid euro newly-qualified figure exists, and this page will not invent one. The Spain legal entities — Clifford Chance, S.L.P. on Paseo de la Castellana, A&O Shearman on Serrano — are euro payers on a Spanish table.
Is there a published 2026 in-house counsel salary table for Spain?
No public 2026 in-house counsel band by year of qualification was found. Of 76 in-house respondents in our Madrid cohort, 51 matched the last hire to an elite-firm associate rung. Recruiter-run general-counsel surveys and job-board aggregates are not used here. The closest public demand proxy is ICAM’s Abogados de Empresa section, which counted 3,649 members at 31 March 2026 — a voluntary college roll, not a national in-house census and not a wage. The euro seat count for a Madrid general counsel is on the general counsel salary in Madrid 2026 page.
How long does it take to fill a Madrid associate or in-house legal seat?
Sartori’s Madrid associate desk works to a typical 6 to 12 week timeline, with a median of 9 working days from offer to signature. That is the Madrid associate book on 20 closed searches over three years, completed at 92 percent. Five of those 20 files required a mid-process re-price after the original brief used a London newly-qualified conversion as the Madrid associate band, and four of the 20 ran past 12 weeks.
What is the statutory floor a Madrid law-firm contract cannot undercut in 2026?
The 2026 Spanish minimum-wage annual comparison floor is EUR 17,094 under Real Decreto 126/2026. Madrid’s Convenio de Oficinas y Despachos, registered in the Boletín Oficial de la Comunidad de Madrid on 1 May 2026, puts a Grupo I nivel 1 titulado at EUR 1,559.05 a month, or EUR 21,826.70 over 14 pays. A Garrigues junior at about EUR 46,000 is more than twice that convenio cell. Neither floor is an associate scale.
Employer reports, bar census prints, and the exchange-rate tape.
Employed cash comes from 2025 sustainability reports and from El Confidencial's 28 July 2026 compilation of those reports. Bar census prints come from CGAE, ICAM and ICAB. Sterling conversions use the ECB reference of 11 September 2026. London newly-qualified cash is the 2024 firm move still standing as of 4 December 2025.

Employed cash figures are 2025 sustainability-report means, not posted lockstep offers. Pérez-Llorca age bands include London, New York and Singapore hubs. Partners sit outside the laboral table. London newly-qualified cash is a 2024 firm move still standing as of the 4 December 2025 compilation. ECB rates are 11 September 2026. INE CNO 25 is 2022 and mixes public-law occupations. ICAM section membership is voluntary and overlapping. The 9-of-10 aptitude pass rate is a ministry restatement through the legal press, not a BOE aggregate table.
Our own numbers — the Madrid interview cohort, the mandate telemetry, the counter-offer incidence and the offer-to-acceptance window — come from the continuous research program described on our research page, which sets out the survey waves and the mapping coverage behind every Sartori figure quoted above.
